śrutimātreṇa santoṣakārakaṁ vākyamūcivān śrutvā brahmamukhādvāṇīṁ sudhādhārāmivāruṇaḥ

— he spoke words that brought contentment merely by hearing them. Hearing that voice from Brahma's mouth, like a stream of nectar, Aruna —

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.10.13.48)

brahmaviṣṇumaheśādyā mṛtyunā kavalīkṛtāḥ tadānyeṣāṁ tu kā vārtā maraṇe dānavottama

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.10.13.52)

devaiḥ sārdhaṁ jagāmāśu brahmaṇaḥ sadanaṁ prati brahmaviṣṇū puraskṛtya jagmuste śaṅkarālayam

— went swiftly together with the gods toward Brahma's abode. Placing Brahma and Vishnu before them, they went to Shankara's dwelling.

Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.10.13.60)

vicāraṁ cakrire tatra vadhārthaṁ te suradruhām etasminsamaye tatra daityasenāsamāvṛtaḥ

There they deliberated on the means of destroying that enemy of the gods. At this time, there, surrounded by the daitya army —

Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.10.13.61)

aruṇākhyo daityarājo jagāmāśu triviṣṭapam sūryenduyamavahnīnāmadhikārānpṛthakpṛthak

— the daitya king named Aruna quickly went to the triple heaven, and, over the domains of the Sun, Moon, Yama, and Fire, each separately —

Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.10.13.62)

svayaṁ cakāra tapasā nānārūpadharo mune svasvasthānacyutāḥ sarve jagmuḥ kailāsamaṇḍalam

— by his own austerity, assumed various forms and took control, O sage. All of them, dislodged from their own stations, went to the region of Kailasa —

Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.10.13.63)

śaśaṁsuḥ śaṅkaraṁ devāḥ svasvaduḥkhaṁ pṛthakpṛthak mahān vicārastatrāsītkiṁ kartavyamataḥ param

— and related to Shankara, each their own particular suffering. There a great deliberation arose: 'What is to be done further in this?'

Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.10.13.64)

na yuddhena ca śastrāstrairna pumbhyo nāpi yoṣitaḥ dvipādbhyo vā catuṣpādbhyo nobhayākārato'pi vā

'Not by battle nor by weapons or missiles, not by man nor by woman, not by two-footed nor by four-footed, nor even by one of both natures combined —'

Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.10.13.65)

mṛtyurbhavediti brahmā provāca vacanaṁ yataḥ iti cintāturāḥ sarve kartuṁ kiñcinna ca kṣamāḥ

'— can death come to him' — this Brahma had spoken. Thus all, afflicted with anxiety, were unable to do anything.

Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.10.13.66)

etasminsamaye tatra vāgabhūdaśarīriṇī bhajadhvaṁ bhuvaneśānīṁ sā vaḥ kāryaṁ vidhāsyati

At this time, there, a bodiless voice arose: 'Worship the sovereign of the worlds; she will accomplish your task.'

Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.10.13.67)

gāyatrījapasaṁsakto daityarāḍ yadi tāṁ tyajet mṛtyuyogyastadā bhūyādityuccaistoṣakāriṇī

'— if the king of daityas, devoted to Gayatri-japa, should abandon it, then he would become fit for death' — thus that voice spoke, greatly delighting them.

Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.10.13.68)

śrutvā daivīṁ tathā vāṇīṁ mantrayāmāsurādṛtāḥ bṛhaspatiṁ samāhūya vacanaṁ prāha devarāṭ

Having heard that divine voice, they deliberated with reverence. Summoning Brihaspati, the king of the gods spoke these words:

Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.10.13.69)

guro gaccha surāṇāṁ tu kāryārthamasuraṁ prati yathā bhavecca gāyatrītyāgastasya tathā kuru

'Go, O guru, on behalf of the gods, to the asura, for the sake of our task; so contrive it that his abandonment of Gayatri comes to pass.'

Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.10.13.70)

asmābhiḥ parameśānī sevyate dhyānayogataḥ prasannā sā bhagavatī sāhāyyaṁ te kariṣyati

'We serve the supreme sovereign through the discipline of meditation; that pleased Bhagavati will render you aid.'

Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.10.13.71)

ityādiśya guruṁ sarve jagmurjāmbūnadeśvarīm sāsmāndaityabhayatrastān pālayiṣyati śobhanā

Having thus instructed the guru, all of them went to the sovereign of the golden land: 'She, the beautiful one, shall protect us, terrified by fear of the daitya.'

Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.10.13.72)

tatra gatvā tapaścaryāṁ cakruḥ sarve suniṣṭhitāḥ māyābījajapāsaktā devīmakhaparāyaṇāḥ

Going there, they all performed austerity, firmly established, devoted to the japa of the Maya seed-mantra, intent on worship of the Goddess.

Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.10.13.73)

bṛhaspatistadā śīghraṁ jagāmāsurasannidhau āgataṁ munivaryaṁ taṁ papracchātha sa daityarāṭ

Then Brihaspati swiftly went to the presence of the asura. That daitya king questioned the excellent sage who had come —

Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.10.13.74)

mune kutrāgamaḥ kasmātkimarthamiti me vada nāhaṁ yuṣmatpakṣapātī pratyutārātireva ca

'O sage, from where have you come, and why, and for what purpose — tell me this. I am not partial to your side, but rather your enemy indeed.'

Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.10.13.75)

iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā provāca munināyakaḥ asmatsevyā ca yā devī sā tvayā pūjyate'niśam

Having heard his words, the foremost of sages spoke: 'The Goddess whom we serve — she is worshipped by you as well, constantly —'

Verse 76 (devibhagavatam.10.13.76)

tasmādasmatpakṣapātī na bhavestvaṁ kathaṁ vada iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā mohito devamāyayā

'— therefore, how could you say you are not partial to our side?' Having heard his words, deluded by the Goddess's maya, O excellent one —

Verse 77 (devibhagavatam.10.13.77)

tatyāja paramaṁ mantramabhimānena sattama gāyatrītyāgato daityo nistejasko babhūva ha

— he abandoned that supreme mantra out of pride. Having abandoned Gayatri, the daitya became bereft of splendor.

Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.10.13.78)

kṛtakāryo gurustasmātsthānānnirgatavānpunaḥ tato vṛttāntamakhilaṁ kathayāmāsa vajriṇe

His task accomplished, the guru then departed from that place, and related the whole account to the wielder of the thunderbolt.

Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.10.13.79)

santuṣṭāste surāḥ sarve bhejire parameśvarīm evaṁ bahugate kāle kasmiṁścitsamaye mune

All the gods, greatly pleased, took refuge in the supreme sovereign Goddess. Thus, as much time had passed, at a certain moment, O sage —

Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.10.13.80)

Verse 83 (devibhagavatam.10.13.83)

Verse 87 (devibhagavatam.10.13.87)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca iti devavacaḥ śrutvā pragalbhaṁ madhuraṁ vacaḥ uvāca jagadambā sā mattakokilabhāṣiṇī

Shri Narayana said: Having heard these bold and sweet words of the gods, she, the Mother of the world, whose voice was like an intoxicated cuckoo's, spoke.

Verse 105 (devibhagavatam.10.13.105)

devyuvāca prasannāhaṁ sadā devā varadeśaśikhāmaṇiḥ bruvantu vibudhāḥ sarve yadeva syāccikīrṣitam

The Goddess said: 'I am ever pleased, O gods, the crest-jewel of boon-givers; let all the wise ones say what is to be done.'

Verse 106 (devibhagavatam.10.13.106)

devīvākyaṁ surāḥ śrutvā procurduḥkhasya kāraṇam duṣṭadaityasya caritaṁ jagadbādhākaraṁ param

Having heard the Goddess's words, the gods related the cause of their sorrow — the deeds of the wicked daitya, supremely oppressive to the world —

Verse 107 (devibhagavatam.10.13.107)

devabrāhmaṇavedānāṁ helanaṁ nāśanaṁ tathā sthānabhraṁśaṁ surāṇāṁ ca kathayāmāsurādṛtāḥ

— the scorning and destruction of gods, brahmins, and the Vedas, and the dislodging of the gods from their stations — this they related with reverence.

Verse 108 (devibhagavatam.10.13.108)

brahmaṇo varadānaṁ ca yathāvatte samūcire śrutvā devamukhādvāṇīṁ mahābhagavatī tadā

And they related in full how Brahma had granted him the boon. Having heard that voice from the mouth of the gods, the great sovereign Goddess then —

Verse 109 (devibhagavatam.10.13.109)

prerayāmāsa hastasthānbhramarānbhrāmarī tadā pārśvasthānagnabhāgasthānnānārūpadharāṁstathā

— sent forth the bees resting in her hands, that Bhramari; and from her sides, from parts of her nails, bearing various forms as well —

Verse 110 (devibhagavatam.10.13.110)

janayāmāsa bahuśo yairvyāptaṁ bhuvanatrayam maṭacīyūthavatteṣāṁ samudāyastu nirgataḥ

— she brought forth many, by which the three worlds were pervaded; a swarm like a cluster of bees emerged from them.

Verse 111 (devibhagavatam.10.13.111)

tadāntarikṣaṁ tairvyāptamandhakāraḥ kṣitāvabhūt divi parvataśṛṅgeṣu drumeṣu vipineṣvapi

Then the sky became pervaded by them, and darkness fell upon the earth; in the heavens, on mountain peaks, in trees, and in the forests as well —

Verse 112 (devibhagavatam.10.13.112)

bhramarā eva sañjātāstadadbhutamivābhavat te sarve daityavakṣāṁsi dārayāmāsurudgatāḥ

— they all became bees; it was as if a wonder had occurred. All of them tore open the daityas' breasts, bursting forth —

Verse 113 (devibhagavatam.10.13.113)

naraṁ madhuharaṁ yadvanmakṣikāḥ kopasaṁyutāḥ upāyo na ca śastrāṇāṁ tathāstrāṇāṁ tadābhavat

— like bees in fury attacking a man who has stolen their honey. There was no remedy then, neither of weapons nor of missiles.

Verse 114 (devibhagavatam.10.13.114)

na yuddhaṁ na ca sambhāṣā kevalaṁ maraṇaṁ khalu yasminyasminsthale ye ye sthitā daityā yathā yathā

There was no battle and no parley — only death alone, indeed. In whatever place, whichever daityas stood, in whatever manner —

Verse 115 (devibhagavatam.10.13.115)

tatraiva ca tathā sarve maraṇaṁ prāpurutsmayāḥ parasparaṁ samācāro na kasyāpyabhavattadā

— in that very place, in that very manner, all of them met death, astonished. No mutual dealing occurred among any of them then.

Verse 116 (devibhagavatam.10.13.116)
