The Gods' Prayer to Rudra

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.10.4.1)

सूत उवाच । ततः सर्वे सुरगणा महेन्द्रप्रमुखास्तदा । पद्मयोनिं पुरस्कृत्य रुद्रं शरणमन्वयुः ॥

sūta uvāca tataḥ sarve suragaṇā mahendrapramukhāstadā padmayoniṁ puraskṛtya rudraṁ śaraṇamanvayuḥ

Suta said: Then all the hosts of gods, headed by great Indra, taking the lotus-born Brahma before them, took refuge in Rudra.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.10.4.2)

उपतस्थुः प्रणतिभिः स्तोत्रैश्चारुविभूतिभिः । देवदेवं गिरिशयं शशिलोलितशेखरम् ॥

upatasthuḥ praṇatibhiḥ stotraiścāruvibhūtibhiḥ devadevaṁ giriśayaṁ śaśilolitaśekharam

They approached him with prostrations and hymns rich in beautiful glories — that god of gods, dweller on the mountain, whose crest is adorned by the trembling moon.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.10.4.3)

देववा ऊचुः । जय देव गणाध्यक्ष उमालालितपङ्कज । अष्टसिद्धिविभूतीनां दात्रे भक्तजनाय ते ॥

devavā ūcuḥ jaya deva gaṇādhyakṣa umālālitapaṅkaja aṣṭasiddhivibhūtīnāṁ dātre bhaktajanāya te

The gods said: Victory, O god, lord of the ganas, whose lotus-feet are caressed by Uma! To you, the giver of the glory of the eight siddhis to your devotees —

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.10.4.4)

महामायाविलसितस्थानाय परमात्मने । वृषाङ्कायामरेशाय कैलासस्थितिशालिने ॥

mahāmāyāvilasitasthānāya paramātmane vṛṣāṅkāyāmareśāya kailāsasthitiśāline

— to the abode where the great Maya sports, the supreme Self, whose emblem is the bull, lord of the immortals, established on Kailasa —

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.10.4.5)

अहिर्बुध्न्याय मान्याय मनवे मानदायिने । अजाय बहुरूपाय स्वात्मारामाय शम्भवे ॥

ahirbudhnyāya mānyāya manave mānadāyine ajāya bahurūpāya svātmārāmāya śambhave

— to Ahirbudhnya, the venerable one, honored by Manu, giver of honor, unborn, of many forms, ever delighting in his own Self, to Shambhu —

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.10.4.6)

गणनाथाय देवाय गिरिशाय नमोऽस्तु ते । महाविभूतिदात्रे ते महाविष्णुस्तुताय च ॥

gaṇanāthāya devāya giriśāya namo'stu te mahāvibhūtidātre te mahāviṣṇustutāya ca

— to the lord of the ganas, the god, dweller on the mountain, may there be homage to you! To the giver of great glory, praised even by the great Vishnu —

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.10.4.7)

विष्णुहृत्कञ्जवासाय महायोगरताय च । योगगम्याय योगाय योगिनां पतये नमः ॥

viṣṇuhṛtkañjavāsāya mahāyogaratāya ca yogagamyāya yogāya yogināṁ pataye namaḥ

— dwelling in the lotus of Vishnu's heart, ever devoted to great yoga, attainable through yoga, yoga itself, homage to the lord of yogis —

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.10.4.8)

योगीशाय नमस्तुभ्यं योगानां फलदायिने । दीनदानपरायापि दयासागरमूर्तये ॥

yogīśāya namastubhyaṁ yogānāṁ phaladāyine dīnadānaparāyāpi dayāsāgaramūrtaye

Homage to you, lord of yogis, giver of the fruits of all yogic practices! To you devoted to giving to the humble, whose very form is an ocean of compassion —

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.10.4.9)

आर्तिप्रशमनायोग्रवीर्याय गुणमूर्तये । वृषध्वजाय कालाय कालकालाय ते नमः ॥

ārtipraśamanāyogravīryāya guṇamūrtaye vṛṣadhvajāya kālāya kālakālāya te namaḥ

— to the pacifier of affliction, of terrible valor, whose form is composed of the gunas, whose banner is the bull, to Time, to the very death of Death — homage to you.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.10.4.10)

सूत उवाच । एवं स्तुतः स देवेशो यज्ञभुग्भिर्वृषध्वजः । प्राह गम्भीरया वाचा प्रहसन्विबुधर्षभान् ॥

sūta uvāca evaṁ stutaḥ sa deveśo yajñabhugbhirvṛṣadhvajaḥ prāha gambhīrayā vācā prahasanvibudharṣabhān

Suta said: Thus praised, that lord of gods, the bull-bannered one who partakes of sacrifices, spoke in a deep voice, smiling at the foremost gods.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.10.4.11)

श्रीभगवानुवाच । प्रसन्नोऽहं दिविषदः स्तोत्रेणोत्तमपूरुषाः । मनोरथं पूरयामि सर्वेषां देवतर्षभाः ॥

śrībhagavānuvāca prasanno'haṁ diviṣadaḥ stotreṇottamapūruṣāḥ manorathaṁ pūrayāmi sarveṣāṁ devatarṣabhāḥ

Shri Bhagavan said: I am pleased, O dwellers of heaven, by this hymn, O supreme persons! I shall fulfill the heart's desire of all of you, O foremost among gods.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.10.4.12)

देवा ऊचुः । सर्वदेवेश गिरिश शशिमौलिविराजित । आर्तानां शङ्करस्त्वं च शं विधेहि महाबल ॥

devā ūcuḥ sarvadeveśa giriśa śaśimaulivirājita ārtānāṁ śaṅkarastvaṁ ca śaṁ vidhehi mahābala

The gods said: O lord of all gods, dweller on the mountain, resplendent with the moon on your crest! You are the bringer of well-being to the afflicted; O mighty one, grant us peace.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.10.4.13)

पर्वतो विन्ध्यनामास्ति मेरुद्वेष्टा महोन्नतः । भानुमार्गनिरोद्धा हि सर्वेषां दुःखदोऽनघ ॥

parvato vindhyanāmāsti merudveṣṭā mahonnataḥ bhānumārganiroddhā hi sarveṣāṁ duḥkhado'nagha

There is a mountain named Vindhya, rival of Meru, exceedingly lofty, who has obstructed the sun's path, and who brings suffering to all, O sinless one.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.10.4.14)

तदवृद्धिं स्तम्भयेशान सर्वकल्याणकृद्भव । भानुसञ्चाररोधेन कालज्ञानं कथं भवेत् ॥

tadavṛddhiṁ stambhayeśāna sarvakalyāṇakṛdbhava bhānusañcārarodhena kālajñānaṁ kathaṁ bhavet

Check its growth, O lord, be the doer of all auspiciousness! With the sun's movement obstructed, how can the reckoning of time proceed?

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.10.4.15)

नष्टे स्वाहास्वधाकारे लोके कः शरणं भवेत् । अस्माकं च भयार्तानां भवानेव हि दृश्यते ॥

naṣṭe svāhāsvadhākāre loke kaḥ śaraṇaṁ bhavet asmākaṁ ca bhayārtānāṁ bhavāneva hi dṛśyate

With the utterance of svāhā and svadhā destroyed, who in this world can be a refuge? For us, afflicted by fear, you alone appear as our refuge.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.10.4.16)

दुःखनाशकरो देव प्रसीद गिरिजापते । श्रीशिव उवाच । नास्माकं शक्तिरस्तीह तद्वृद्धिस्तम्भने सुराः ॥

duḥkhanāśakaro deva prasīda girijāpate śrīśiva uvāca nāsmākaṁ śaktirastīha tadvṛddhistambhane surāḥ

'O god, destroyer of sorrow, be gracious, O lord of the mountain's daughter!' Shri Shiva said: 'We have no power here, O gods, to check its growth.'

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.10.4.17)

इममेवं वदिष्यामो भगवन्तं रमाधवम् । सोऽस्माकं प्रभुरात्मा च पूज्यः कारणरूपधृक् ॥

imamevaṁ vadiṣyāmo bhagavantaṁ ramādhavam so'smākaṁ prabhurātmā ca pūjyaḥ kāraṇarūpadhṛk

'We shall go and say this to the Lord, the husband of Rama. He is our lord and our very Self, worthy of worship, who bears the form of the cause.'

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.10.4.18)

गोविन्दो भगवान्विष्णुः सर्वकारणकारणः । तं गत्वा कथयिष्यामः स दुःखान्तो भविष्यति ॥

govindo bhagavānviṣṇuḥ sarvakāraṇakāraṇaḥ taṁ gatvā kathayiṣyāmaḥ sa duḥkhānto bhaviṣyati

'Govinda, the Lord Vishnu, is the cause of all causes. Going to him, we shall speak of this — this suffering will surely come to an end.'

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.10.4.19)

इत्येवमाकर्ण्य गिरीशभाषितं देवाश्च सेन्द्राः सपयोजसम्भवाः । रुद्रं पुरस्कृत्य च वेपमाना वैकुण्ठलोकं प्रतिजग्मुरञ्जसा ॥

ityevamākarṇya girīśabhāṣitaṁ devāśca sendrāḥ sapayojasambhavāḥ rudraṁ puraskṛtya ca vepamānā vaikuṇṭhalokaṁ pratijagmurañjasā

Having thus heard the words of the lord of the mountain, the gods, together with Indra and the water-born ones, placing Rudra at their head, and trembling, quickly proceeded together toward the realm of Vaikuntha.
