Shri Vishnu Grants a Boon to the Gods
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.10.5.1)
सूत उवाच । ते गत्वा देवदेवेशं रमानाथं जगद्गुरुम् । विष्णुं कमलपत्राक्षं ददृशुः प्रभयान्वितम् ॥
sūta uvāca te gatvā devadeveśaṁ ramānāthaṁ jagadgurum viṣṇuṁ kamalapatrākṣaṁ dadṛśuḥ prabhayānvitam
Suta said: They went to the god of gods, the Lord of Rama, the guru of the world, Vishnu, lotus-petal-eyed, and beheld him full of radiance.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.10.5.2)
स्तोत्रेण तुष्टुवुर्भक्त्या गद्गदस्वरसत्कृताः । देवा ऊचुः । जय विष्णो रमेशाद्य महापुरुष पूर्वज ॥
stotreṇa tuṣṭuvurbhaktyā gadgadasvarasatkṛtāḥ devā ūcuḥ jaya viṣṇo rameśādya mahāpuruṣa pūrvaja
They praised him with a hymn, devotedly, their voices choked with emotion. The gods said: Victory to you, O Vishnu, lord of Rama, foremost being, the eldest one —
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.10.5.3)
दैत्यारे कामजनक सर्वकामफलप्रद । महावराह गोविन्द महायज्ञस्वरूपक ॥
daityāre kāmajanaka sarvakāmaphalaprada mahāvarāha govinda mahāyajñasvarūpaka
— O foe of the daityas, begetter of desire, giver of the fruits of all desires! O great Boar, Govinda, embodiment of the great sacrifice —
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.10.5.4)
महाविष्णो ध्रुवेशाद्य जगदुत्पत्तिकारण । मत्स्यावतारे वेदानामुद्धाराधाररूपक ॥
mahāviṣṇo dhruveśādya jagadutpattikāraṇa matsyāvatāre vedānāmuddhārādhārarūpaka
— O great Vishnu, lord of Dhruva, cause of the origin of the universe! In the Fish incarnation, the support and rescuer of the Vedas —
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.10.5.5)
सत्यव्रत धराधीश मत्स्यरूपाय ते नमः । जयाकूपार दैत्यारे सुरकार्यसमर्पक ॥
satyavrata dharādhīśa matsyarūpāya te namaḥ jayākūpāra daityāre surakāryasamarpaka
— O keeper of the vow of truth, lord of the earth, homage to you in Fish form! Victory, O ocean, foe of the daityas, accomplisher of the gods' work —
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.10.5.6)
अमृताप्तिकरेशान कूर्मरूपाय ते नमः । जयादिदैत्यनाशार्थमादिसूकररूपधृक् ॥
amṛtāptikareśāna kūrmarūpāya te namaḥ jayādidaityanāśārthamādisūkararūpadhṛk
— O lord, bringer of the attainment of nectar, homage to you in Tortoise form! Victory, O bearer of the primal Boar's form, for the destruction of the primal daitya —
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.10.5.7)
मह्युद्धारकृतोद्योगकोलरूपाय ते नमः । नारसिंहं वपुः कृत्वा महादैत्यं ददार यः ॥
mahyuddhārakṛtodyogakolarūpāya te namaḥ nārasiṁhaṁ vapuḥ kṛtvā mahādaityaṁ dadāra yaḥ
— homage to you in Boar form, whose effort was devoted to lifting up the earth! You who took the form of Man-Lion and tore apart the great daitya —
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.10.5.8)
करजैर्वरदृप्ताङ्गं तस्मै नृहरये नमः । वामनं रूपमास्थाय त्रैलोक्यैश्वर्यमोहितम् ॥
karajairvaradṛptāṅgaṁ tasmai nṛharaye namaḥ vāmanaṁ rūpamāsthāya trailokyaiśvaryamohitam
— with your claws, that body proud from a boon — homage to that Man-Lion! Having assumed the form of the Dwarf, you beguiled the sovereignty of the three worlds —
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.10.5.9)
बलिं सञ्छलयामास तस्मै वामनरूपिणे । दुष्टक्षत्रविनाशाय सहस्रकरशत्रवे ॥
baliṁ sañchalayāmāsa tasmai vāmanarūpiṇe duṣṭakṣatravināśāya sahasrakaraśatrave
— you deceived Bali; homage to you in Dwarf form! For the destruction of wicked kshatriyas, foe of the thousand-armed one —
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.10.5.10)
रेणुकागर्भजाताय जामदग्न्याय ते नमः । दुष्टराक्षसपौलस्त्यशिरश्छेदपटीयसे ॥
reṇukāgarbhajātāya jāmadagnyāya te namaḥ duṣṭarākṣasapaulastyaśiraśchedapaṭīyase
— born of Renuka's womb, son of Jamadagni, homage to you! Skilled at severing the head of the wicked demon descended from Pulastya —
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.10.5.11)
श्रीमद्दाशरथे तुभ्यं नमोऽनन्तक्रमाय च । कंसदुर्योधनाद्यैश्च दैत्यैः पृथ्वीशलाञ्छनैः ॥
śrīmaddāśarathe tubhyaṁ namo'nantakramāya ca kaṁsaduryodhanādyaiśca daityaiḥ pṛthvīśalāñchanaiḥ
— O glorious son of Dasharatha, homage to you, of endless prowess! With Kamsa, Duryodhana, and other daityas who were burdens upon the earth's kings —
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.10.5.12)
भाराक्रान्तां महीं योऽसावुज्जहार महाविभुः । धर्मं संस्थापयामास पापं कृत्वा सुदूरतः ॥
bhārākrāntāṁ mahīṁ yo'sāvujjahāra mahāvibhuḥ dharmaṁ saṁsthāpayāmāsa pāpaṁ kṛtvā sudūrataḥ
— the earth, oppressed by that weight, which you, the great lord, lifted up; you established dharma, having removed sin far away —
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.10.5.13)
तस्मै कृष्णाय देवाय नमोऽस्तु बहुधा विभो । दुष्टयज्ञविघाताय पशुहिंसानिवृत्तये ॥
tasmai kṛṣṇāya devāya namo'stu bahudhā vibho duṣṭayajñavighātāya paśuhiṁsānivṛttaye
— to you, Krishna, the god, be homage many times over, O all-pervading one! For the destruction of corrupt sacrifices, for putting an end to the harming of animals —
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.10.5.14)
बौद्धरूपं दधौ योऽसौ तस्मै देवाय ते नमः । म्लेच्छप्रायेऽखिले लोके दुष्टराजन्यपीडिते ॥
bauddharūpaṁ dadhau yo'sau tasmai devāya te namaḥ mlecchaprāye'khile loke duṣṭarājanyapīḍite
— you who bore the Buddha form, homage to you, O god! When the whole world has become nearly barbarous, oppressed by wicked kings —
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.10.5.15)
कल्किरूपं समादध्यौ देवदेवाय ते नमः । दशावतारास्ते देव भक्तानां रक्षणाय वै ॥
kalkirūpaṁ samādadhyau devadevāya te namaḥ daśāvatārāste deva bhaktānāṁ rakṣaṇāya vai
— you shall assume the Kalki form, homage to you, god of gods! These are your ten incarnations, O god, indeed for the protection of your devotees —
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.10.5.16)
दुष्टदैत्यविघाताय तस्मात्त्वं सर्वदुःखहृत् । जय भक्तार्तिनाशाय धृतं नारीजलात्मसु ॥
duṣṭadaityavighātāya tasmāttvaṁ sarvaduḥkhahṛt jaya bhaktārtināśāya dhṛtaṁ nārījalātmasu
— for the destruction of wicked daityas; therefore you are the remover of all sorrow. Victory to you, destroyer of your devotees' distress, who has held forms both among women and within the waters —
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.10.5.17)
रूपं येन त्वया देव कोऽन्यस्त्वत्तो दयानिधिः । इत्येवं देवदेवेशं स्तुत्वा श्रीपीतवाससम् ॥
rūpaṁ yena tvayā deva ko'nyastvatto dayānidhiḥ ityevaṁ devadeveśaṁ stutvā śrīpītavāsasam
— by that form, O god, who else is an ocean of compassion like you? Thus having praised the god of gods, clad in yellow garments —
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.10.5.18)
प्रणेमुर्भक्तिसहिताः साष्टाङ्गं विबुधर्षभाः । तेषां स्तवं समाकर्ण्य देवः श्रीपुरुषोत्तमः ॥
praṇemurbhaktisahitāḥ sāṣṭāṅgaṁ vibudharṣabhāḥ teṣāṁ stavaṁ samākarṇya devaḥ śrīpuruṣottamaḥ
— those foremost of the wise prostrated with devotion, bowing with all eight limbs. Having heard their hymn, the god, Shri Purushottama —
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.10.5.19)
उवाच विबुधान्सर्वान् हर्षयच्छ्रीगदाधरः । श्रीभगवानुवाच । प्रसन्नोऽस्मि स्तवेनाहं देवास्तापं विमुञ्चथ ॥
uvāca vibudhānsarvān harṣayacchrīgadādharaḥ śrībhagavānuvāca prasanno'smi stavenāhaṁ devāstāpaṁ vimuñcatha
— spoke, delighting all the gods, the glorious wielder of the mace. Shri Bhagavan said: 'I am pleased by this hymn, O gods; abandon your affliction —
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.10.5.20)
भवतां नाशयिष्यामि दुःखं परमदुःसहम् । वृणुध्वं च वरं मत्तो देवाः परमदुर्लभम् ॥
bhavatāṁ nāśayiṣyāmi duḥkhaṁ paramaduḥsaham vṛṇudhvaṁ ca varaṁ matto devāḥ paramadurlabham
'— I shall destroy your suffering, most unbearable. And choose a boon from me, O gods, one most difficult to obtain —
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.10.5.21)
ददामि परमप्रीतः स्तवस्यास्य प्रसादतः । य एतत्पठते स्तोत्रं कल्य उत्थाय मानवः ॥
dadāmi paramaprītaḥ stavasyāsya prasādataḥ ya etatpaṭhate stotraṁ kalya utthāya mānavaḥ
'— I grant it, greatly pleased, by the grace of this hymn. Whoever, having risen at dawn, recites this hymn —
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.10.5.22)
मयि भक्तिं परां कृत्वा न तं शोकः स्पृशेत्कदा । अलक्ष्मीः कालकर्णी च नाक्रामेत्तद्गृहं सुराः ॥
mayi bhaktiṁ parāṁ kṛtvā na taṁ śokaḥ spṛśetkadā alakṣmīḥ kālakarṇī ca nākrāmettadgṛhaṁ surāḥ
'— having cultivated supreme devotion to me, sorrow shall never touch him; misfortune and the ill-omened Kalakarni shall never enter his house, O gods.'
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.10.5.23)
नोपसर्गा न वेताला न ग्रहा ब्रह्मराक्षसाः । न रोगा वातिकाः पैत्ताः श्लेष्मसम्भविनस्तथा ॥
nopasargā na vetālā na grahā brahmarākṣasāḥ na rogā vātikāḥ paittāḥ śleṣmasambhavinastathā
'Neither afflictions, nor vetalas, nor grahas, nor brahma-rakshasas; nor diseases born of wind, bile, or phlegm —
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.10.5.24)
नाकालमरणं तस्य कदापि च भविष्यति । सन्ततिश्चिरकालस्था भोगाः सर्वे सुखादयः ॥
nākālamaraṇaṁ tasya kadāpi ca bhaviṣyati santatiścirakālasthā bhogāḥ sarve sukhādayaḥ
'— shall ever touch him. Untimely death shall never befall him. His progeny shall endure for long, and all enjoyments and pleasures —
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.10.5.25)
सम्भविष्यन्ति तन्मर्त्यगृहे यः स्तोत्रपाठकः । किं पुनर्बहुनोक्तेन स्तोत्रं सर्वार्थसाधकम् ॥
sambhaviṣyanti tanmartyagṛhe yaḥ stotrapāṭhakaḥ kiṁ punarbahunoktena stotraṁ sarvārthasādhakam
'— shall come to that mortal's house who recites this hymn. What need is there to say more? This hymn accomplishes every purpose.'
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.10.5.26)
एतस्य पठनानॄणां भुक्तिमुक्ती न दूरतः । देवा भवत्सु यद्दुःखं कथ्यतां तदसंशयम् ॥
etasya paṭhanānṝṇāṁ bhuktimuktī na dūrataḥ devā bhavatsu yadduḥkhaṁ kathyatāṁ tadasaṁśayam
'For men who recite it, enjoyment and liberation are not far off. O gods, whatever suffering is upon you, tell it to me without any doubt —
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.10.5.27)
नाशयामि न सन्देहश्चात्र कार्योऽणुरेव च । एवं श्रीभगवद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा सर्वे दिवौकसः । प्रसन्नमनसः सर्वे पुनरूचुर्वृषाकपिम् ॥
nāśayāmi na sandehaścātra kāryo'ṇureva ca evaṁ śrībhagavadvākyaṁ śrutvā sarve divaukasaḥ prasannamanasaḥ sarve punarūcurvṛṣākapim
'— I shall destroy it; let there be not even the slightest doubt about this.' Having thus heard the words of Shri Bhagavan, all the dwellers of heaven, their minds delighted, again spoke to the mighty Vrishakapi.
