Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.10.6.1)

सूत उवाच । श्रीशस्य वचनाद्देवाः सन्तुष्टाः सर्व एव हि । प्रसन्नमनसो भूत्वा पुनरेनं समूचिरे ॥

sūta uvāca śrīśasya vacanāddevāḥ santuṣṭāḥ sarva eva hi prasannamanaso bhūtvā punarenaṁ samūcire

Suta said: At the word of the Lord of Lakshmi, all the gods were content indeed; their minds pleased, they again addressed him.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.10.6.2)

देवा ऊचुः । देवदेव महाविष्णो सृष्टिस्थित्यन्तकारण । विष्णो विन्ध्यनगोऽर्कस्य मार्गरोधं करोति हि ॥

devā ūcuḥ devadeva mahāviṣṇo sṛṣṭisthityantakāraṇa viṣṇo vindhyanago'rkasya mārgarodhaṁ karoti hi

The gods said: O god of gods, great Vishnu, cause of creation, sustenance, and destruction! O Vishnu, the mountain Vindhya obstructs the sun's path.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.10.6.3)

तेन भानुविरोधेन सर्व एव महाविभो । अलब्धभोगभागा हि किं कुर्मः कुत्र याम हि ॥

tena bhānuvirodhena sarva eva mahāvibho alabdhabhogabhāgā hi kiṁ kurmaḥ kutra yāma hi

By that obstruction of the sun, O great lord, all of us are deprived of our due share of offerings — what shall we do, where shall we go?

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.10.6.4)

श्रीभगवानुवाच । या कर्त्री सर्वजगतामाद्या च कुलवर्धनी । देवी भगवती तस्याः पूजकः परमद्युतिः ॥

śrībhagavānuvāca yā kartrī sarvajagatāmādyā ca kulavardhanī devī bhagavatī tasyāḥ pūjakaḥ paramadyutiḥ

Shri Bhagavan said: She who is the maker of all the worlds, the primal one, the increaser of lineages — the Goddess Bhagavati — her worshipper, of supreme splendor —

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.10.6.5)

अगस्त्यो मुनिवर्योऽसौ वाराणस्यां समासते । तत्तेजोवञ्चकोऽगस्त्यो भविष्यति सुरोत्तमाः ॥

agastyo munivaryo'sau vārāṇasyāṁ samāsate tattejovañcako'gastyo bhaviṣyati surottamāḥ

— is the excellent sage Agastya, who dwells in Varanasi. By that one's power, O best of gods, Vindhya shall be deceived and checked.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.10.6.6)

तं प्रसाद्य द्विजवरमगस्त्यं परमौजसम् । याचध्वं विबुधाः काशीं गत्वा निःश्रेयसः पदीम् ॥

taṁ prasādya dvijavaramagastyaṁ paramaujasam yācadhvaṁ vibudhāḥ kāśīṁ gatvā niḥśreyasaḥ padīm

Having propitiated that best of brahmins, Agastya, of supreme vigor, entreat him, O gods — go to Kashi, the abode of final beatitude.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.10.6.7)

सूत उवाच । एवं समुपदिष्टास्ते विष्णुना विबुधोत्तमाः । प्रतीताः प्रणताः सर्वे जग्मुर्वाराणसीं पुरीम् ॥

sūta uvāca evaṁ samupadiṣṭāste viṣṇunā vibudhottamāḥ pratītāḥ praṇatāḥ sarve jagmurvārāṇasīṁ purīm

Suta said: Thus instructed by Vishnu, those best among the wise, convinced, all bowing, went to the city of Varanasi.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.10.6.8)

क्षणेन विबुधश्रेष्ठा गत्वा काशीपुरीं शुभाम् । मणिकर्णीं समाप्लुत्य सचैलं भक्तिसंयुताः ॥

kṣaṇena vibudhaśreṣṭhā gatvā kāśīpurīṁ śubhām maṇikarṇīṁ samāplutya sacailaṁ bhaktisaṁyutāḥ

In a moment, those foremost of the wise, having reached the auspicious city of Kashi, bathed in Manikarnika, garments and all, filled with devotion.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.10.6.9)

सन्तर्प्य देवांश्च पितॄन्दत्त्वा दानं विधानतः । आगत्य मुनिवर्यस्य चाश्रमं परमं महत् ॥

santarpya devāṁśca pitṝndattvā dānaṁ vidhānataḥ āgatya munivaryasya cāśramaṁ paramaṁ mahat

— having satisfied the gods and the ancestors, and given gifts according to rule, they came to the very great hermitage of that best of sages —

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.10.6.10)

प्रशान्तश्वापदाकीर्णं नानापादपसङ्कुलम् । मयूरैः सारसैर्हंसैश्चक्रवाकैरुपाश्रितम् ॥

praśāntaśvāpadākīrṇaṁ nānāpādapasaṅkulam mayūraiḥ sārasairhaṁsaiścakravākairupāśritam

— utterly peaceful, filled with wild creatures, crowded with various trees, frequented by peacocks, cranes, swans, and chakravaka birds.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.10.6.11)

महावराहैः कोलैश्च व्याघ्रैः शार्दूलकैरपि । मृगै रुरुभिरत्यर्थं खड्गैः शरभकैरपि ॥

mahāvarāhaiḥ kolaiśca vyāghraiḥ śārdūlakairapi mṛgai rurubhiratyarthaṁ khaḍgaiḥ śarabhakairapi

— frequented by great boars and wild pigs, tigers and leopards as well, by deer, ruru-deer in great number, by rhinoceroses and sharabhas as well —

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.10.6.12)

समाश्रितं परमया लक्ष्म्या मुनिवरं तदा । दण्डवत्पतिताः सर्वे प्रणेमुश्च पुनः पुनः ॥

samāśritaṁ paramayā lakṣmyā munivaraṁ tadā daṇḍavatpatitāḥ sarve praṇemuśca punaḥ punaḥ

— that hermitage of the excellent sage, then filled with the greatest splendor; all of them, falling prostrate like a rod, bowed again and again.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.10.6.13)

देवा ऊचुः । जय द्विजगणाधीश मान्य पूज्य धरासुर । वातापीबलनाशाय नमस्ते कुम्भयोनये ॥

devā ūcuḥ jaya dvijagaṇādhīśa mānya pūjya dharāsura vātāpībalanāśāya namaste kumbhayonaye

The gods said: Victory, O lord of the twice-born, honored, worshipped, brahmin of the earth! For the destruction of Vatapi's strength, homage to you, O jar-born one!

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.10.6.14)

लोपामुद्रापते श्रीमन्मित्रावरुणसम्भव । सर्वविद्यानिधेऽगस्त्य शास्त्रयोने नमोऽस्तु ते ॥

lopāmudrāpate śrīmanmitrāvaruṇasambhava sarvavidyānidhe'gastya śāstrayone namo'stu te

O husband of Lopamudra, glorious son of Mitra and Varuna! O Agastya, treasury of all knowledge, born of the sacred texts, homage to you!

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.10.6.15)

यस्योदये प्रसन्नानि भवन्त्युज्ज्वलभाञ्ज्यपि । तोयानि तोयराशीनां तस्मै तुभ्यं नमोऽस्तु ते ॥

yasyodaye prasannāni bhavantyujjvalabhāñjyapi toyāni toyarāśīnāṁ tasmai tubhyaṁ namo'stu te

At whose rising the waters of the oceans, even those brimming and radiant, become calmed — homage to you!

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.10.6.16)

काशपुष्पविकासाय लङ्कावासप्रियाय च । जटामण्डलयुक्ताय सशिष्याय नमोऽस्तु ते ॥

kāśapuṣpavikāsāya laṅkāvāsapriyāya ca jaṭāmaṇḍalayuktāya saśiṣyāya namo'stu te

For the blossoming of the kasha-flowers, dear to a dwelling toward Lanka, whose hair is bound in a matted crown, together with your disciple — homage to you!

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.10.6.17)

जय सर्वामरस्तव्य गुणराशे महामुने । वरिष्ठाय च पूज्याय सस्त्रीकाय नमोऽस्तु ते ॥

jaya sarvāmarastavya guṇarāśe mahāmune variṣṭhāya ca pūjyāya sastrīkāya namo'stu te

Victory, praised by all the immortals, O treasury of virtues, great sage! To the most excellent, worthy of worship, together with your wife — homage to you!

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.10.6.18)

प्रसादः क्रियतां स्वामिन् वयं त्वां शरणं गताः । दुस्तराच्छैलजाद्दुःखात्पीडिताः परमद्युते ॥

prasādaḥ kriyatāṁ svāmin vayaṁ tvāṁ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ dustarācchailajādduḥkhātpīḍitāḥ paramadyute

Be gracious, O lord! We have come to you for refuge, afflicted, O one of supreme splendor, by suffering hard to cross, caused by the mountain's son, Vindhya.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.10.6.19)

इत्येवं संस्तुतोऽगस्त्यो मुनिः परमधार्मिकः । प्राह प्रसन्नया वाचा विहसन् द्विजसत्तमः ॥

ityevaṁ saṁstuto'gastyo muniḥ paramadhārmikaḥ prāha prasannayā vācā vihasan dvijasattamaḥ

Thus praised, the sage Agastya, supremely righteous, spoke with a pleased voice, smiling, that best of brahmins.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.10.6.20)

मुनिरुवाच । भवन्तः परमश्रेष्ठा देवास्त्रिभुवनेश्वराः । लोकपाला महात्मानो निग्रहानुग्रहक्षमाः ॥

muniruvāca bhavantaḥ paramaśreṣṭhā devāstribhuvaneśvarāḥ lokapālā mahātmāno nigrahānugrahakṣamāḥ

The sage said: You are supremely excellent, gods, lords of the three worlds, guardians of the world, great souls, capable of both punishment and favor.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.10.6.21)

योऽमरावत्यधीशानः कुलिशं यस्य चायुधम् । सिद्ध्यष्टकं च यद्द्वारि स शक्रो मरुतां पतिः ॥

yo'marāvatyadhīśānaḥ kuliśaṁ yasya cāyudham siddhyaṣṭakaṁ ca yaddvāri sa śakro marutāṁ patiḥ

He who is the lord of Amaravati, whose weapon is the thunderbolt, at whose door stand the eight siddhis — he is Shakra, lord of the Maruts.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.10.6.22)

वैश्वानरः कृशानुर्हि हव्यकव्यवहोऽनिशम् । मुखं सर्वामराणां हि सोऽग्निः किं तस्य दुष्करम् ॥

vaiśvānaraḥ kṛśānurhi havyakavyavaho'niśam mukhaṁ sarvāmarāṇāṁ hi so'gniḥ kiṁ tasya duṣkaram

Vaishvanara, Krishanu, the ceaseless bearer of havya and kavya offerings, the very mouth of all the immortals — what is difficult for him?

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.10.6.23)

रक्षोगणाधिपो भीमः सर्वेषां कर्मसाक्षिकः । दण्डव्यग्रकरो देवः किं तस्यासुकरं सुराः ॥

rakṣogaṇādhipo bhīmaḥ sarveṣāṁ karmasākṣikaḥ daṇḍavyagrakaro devaḥ kiṁ tasyāsukaraṁ surāḥ

The terrible lord of the host of rakshasas, witness to the deeds of all, the god with rod ever poised in hand — what is hard for him, O gods?

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.10.6.24)

तथापि यदि देवेशाः कार्यं मच्छक्तिसिद्धिभृत् । अस्ति चेदुच्यतां देवाः करिष्यामि न संशयः ॥

tathāpi yadi deveśāḥ kāryaṁ macchaktisiddhibhṛt asti ceducyatāṁ devāḥ kariṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ

Even so, O lords of the gods, if there is some task that my power's accomplishment can achieve, tell me, O gods — I shall do it, without doubt.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.10.6.25)

एवं मुनिवरेणोक्तं निशम्य विबुधर्षभाः । प्रतीताः प्रणयोद्विग्नाः कार्यं निजगदुर्निजम् ॥

evaṁ munivareṇoktaṁ niśamya vibudharṣabhāḥ pratītāḥ praṇayodvignāḥ kāryaṁ nijagadurnijam

Hearing this said by the excellent sage, those foremost of the wise, convinced, agitated by affection, related to him their own task.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.10.6.26)

महर्षे विन्ध्यगिरिणा निरुद्धोऽर्कविनिर्गमः । त्रैलोक्यं तेन संविष्टं हाहाभूतमचेतनम् ॥

maharṣe vindhyagiriṇā niruddho'rkavinirgamaḥ trailokyaṁ tena saṁviṣṭaṁ hāhābhūtamacetanam

'O great sage, the sun's emergence has been obstructed by Mount Vindhya. By that, the three worlds have fallen into lamentation, insensible.'

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.10.6.27)

तद्वृद्धिं स्तम्भय मुने निजया तपसः श्रिया । भवतस्तेजसागस्त्य नूनं नम्रो भविष्यति । एतदेवास्मदीयं च कार्यं कर्तव्यमस्ति हि ॥

tadvṛddhiṁ stambhaya mune nijayā tapasaḥ śriyā bhavatastejasāgastya nūnaṁ namro bhaviṣyati etadevāsmadīyaṁ ca kāryaṁ kartavyamasti hi

'Check its growth, O sage, with the glory of your own austerity. By your power, Agastya, it will surely become humbled. This indeed is the task that must be accomplished by us.'
