The Thousand Names of Gayatri

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.12.6.1)

नारद उवाच । भगवन्सर्वधर्मज्ञ सर्वशास्त्रविशारद । श्रुतिस्मृतिपुराणानां रहस्यं त्वन्मुखाच्छ्रुतम्

nārada uvāca bhagavansarvadharmajña sarvaśāstraviśārada śrutismṛtipurāṇānāṁ rahasyaṁ tvanmukhācchrutam

Narada said: O Lord, knower of all dharma, skilled in every scripture! I have heard from your own mouth the secret of the Shrutis, Smritis, and Puranas.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.12.6.2)

सर्वपापहरं देव येन विद्या प्रवर्तते । केन वा ब्रह्मविज्ञानं किं नु वा मोक्षसाधनम्

sarvapāpaharaṁ deva yena vidyā pravartate kena vā brahmavijñānaṁ kiṁ nu vā mokṣasādhanam

O God, tell me that which removes all sin and by which knowledge arises; by what means comes knowledge of Brahman, and what indeed is the means to liberation?

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.12.6.3)

ब्राह्मणानां गतिः केन केन वा मृत्युनाशनम् । ऐहिकामुष्मिकफलं केन वा पद्मलोचन

brāhmaṇānāṁ gatiḥ kena kena vā mṛtyunāśanam aihikāmuṣmikaphalaṁ kena vā padmalocana

By what is the highest goal of Brahmins attained, and by what is death conquered? O lotus-eyed one, by what is the fruit of this world and the next obtained?

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.12.6.4)

वक्तुमर्हस्यशेषेण सर्वं निखिलमादितः । श्रीनारायण उवाच । साधु साधु महाप्राज्ञ सम्यक् पृष्टं त्वयानघ

vaktumarhasyaśeṣeṇa sarvaṁ nikhilamāditaḥ śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca sādhu sādhu mahāprājña samyak pṛṣṭaṁ tvayānagha

You are worthy to tell me all of this in full, from the very beginning. Shri Narayana said: Well said, well said, O greatly wise one! You have asked rightly, O sinless one.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.12.6.5)

शृणु वक्ष्यामि यत्नेन गायत्र्यष्टसहस्रकम् । नाम्नां शुभानां दिव्यानां सर्वपापविनाशनम्

śṛṇu vakṣyāmi yatnena gāyatryaṣṭasahasrakam nāmnāṁ śubhānāṁ divyānāṁ sarvapāpavināśanam

Listen, I shall carefully declare the thousand-and-eight auspicious, divine names of Gayatri, which destroy all sin.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.12.6.6)

सृष्ट्यादौ यद्भगवता पूर्वं प्रोक्तं ब्रवीमि ते । अष्टोत्तरसहस्रस्य ऋषिर्ब्रह्मा प्रकीर्तितः

sṛṣṭyādau yadbhagavatā pūrvaṁ proktaṁ bravīmi te aṣṭottarasahasrasya ṛṣirbrahmā prakīrtitaḥ

I tell you that which was declared of old by the Lord at the beginning of creation. Of this thousand-and-eight names, Brahma is proclaimed the sage,

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.12.6.7)

छन्दोऽनुष्टुप् तथा देवी गायत्री देवता स्मृता । हलो बीजानि तस्यैव स्वराः शक्तय ईरिताः

chando'nuṣṭup tathā devī gāyatrī devatā smṛtā halo bījāni tasyaiva svarāḥ śaktaya īritāḥ

the meter is Anushtup, and the goddess Gayatri is remembered as its deity; the consonants are declared to be its seed-syllables, and the vowels its powers.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.12.6.8)

अङ्गन्यासकरन्यासावुच्येते मातृकाक्षरैः । अथ ध्यानं प्रवक्ष्यामि साधकानां हिताय वै

aṅganyāsakaranyāsāvucyete mātṛkākṣaraiḥ atha dhyānaṁ pravakṣyāmi sādhakānāṁ hitāya vai

The limb-nyasa and the hand-nyasa are performed with the letters of the alphabet. Now I shall declare the meditation-verse, for the welfare of the aspirants.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.12.6.9)

रक्तश्वेतहिरण्यनीलधवलैर्युक्तां त्रिनेत्रोज्ज्वलां रक्तां रक्तनवस्रजं मणिगणैर्युक्तां कुमारीमिमाम् । गायत्रीं कमलासनां करतलव्यानद्धकुण्डाम्बुजां पद्माक्षीं च वरस्रजं च दधतीं हंसाधिरूढां भजे

raktaśvetahiraṇyanīladhavalairyuktāṁ trinetrojjvalāṁ raktāṁ raktanavasrajaṁ maṇigaṇairyuktāṁ kumārīmimām gāyatrīṁ kamalāsanāṁ karatalavyānaddhakuṇḍāmbujāṁ padmākṣīṁ ca varasrajaṁ ca dadhatīṁ haṁsādhirūḍhāṁ bhaje

I worship this maiden Gayatri, endowed with the hues of red, white, gold, blue, and pure white, radiant with three eyes, red-hued, wearing a fresh garland of red flowers strung with clusters of gems, seated on a lotus, holding in her palms a water-pot resting on a lotus, lotus-eyed, bearing a garland of boons, mounted upon a swan.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.12.6.10)

अचिन्त्यलक्षणाव्यक्ताप्यर्थमातृमहेश्वरी । अमृतार्णवमध्यस्थाप्यजिता चापराजिता

acintyalakṣaṇāvyaktāpyarthamātṛmaheśvarī amṛtārṇavamadhyasthāpyajitā cāparājitā

She of inconceivable attributes (Achintyalakshana), the Unmanifest (Avyakta), the Mother of all meaning (Arthamatri), the Great Goddess (Maheshvari), she who abides amid the ocean of nectar (Amritarnavamadhyastha), the Unconquered (Ajita), and the Unconquerable (Aparajita).

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.12.6.11)

अणिमादिगुणाधाराप्यर्कमण्डलसंस्थिता । अजराजापराधर्मा अक्षसूत्रधराधरा

aṇimādiguṇādhārāpyarkamaṇḍalasaṁsthitā ajarājāparādharmā akṣasūtradharādharā

The support of the powers beginning with animā (Animadigunadhara), she who abides in the orb of the sun (Arkamandalasamsthita), the Ageless (Ajara), the Unborn (Aja), the Transcendent (Apara), the Righteous (Dharma), the bearer of the rosary (Akshasutradhara), and the sustainer of the earth (Dharadhara).

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.12.6.12)

अकारादिक्षकारान्ताप्यरिषड्वर्गभेदिनी । अञ्जनाद्रिप्रतीकाशाप्यञ्जनाद्रिनिवासिनी

akārādikṣakārāntāpyariṣaḍvargabhedinī añjanādripratīkāśāpyañjanādrinivāsinī

She who extends from the letter 'a' to the letter 'ksha' (Akaradikshakaranta), the piercer of the six inner enemies (Arishadvargabhedini), she who resembles the collyrium-dark mountain (Anjanadripratikasha), and she who dwells on that mountain (Anjanadrinivasini).

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.12.6.13)

अदितिश्चाजपाविद्याप्यरविन्दनिभेक्षणा । अन्तर्बहिःस्थिताविद्याध्वंसिनी चान्तरात्मिका

aditiścājapāvidyāpyaravindanibhekṣaṇā antarbahiḥsthitāvidyādhvaṁsinī cāntarātmikā

Aditi, the wisdom of the silent mantra (Ajapavidya), she whose eyes resemble the lotus, she who abides both within and without, the destroyer of ignorance, and the inmost Self.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.12.6.14)

अजा चाजमुखावासाप्यरविन्दनिभानना । अर्धमात्रार्थदानज्ञाप्यरिमण्डलमर्दिनी

ajā cājamukhāvāsāpyaravindanibhānanā ardhamātrārthadānajñāpyarimaṇḍalamardinī

The Unborn (Aja), she who dwells in the mouth of the unborn Brahma, she whose face is like a lotus, she who knows the meaning of the half-syllable, and the crusher of the ranks of enemies.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.12.6.15)

असुरघ्नीह्यमावास्याप्यलक्ष्मीघ्न्यन्त्यजार्चिता । आदिलक्ष्मीश्चादिशक्तिराकृतिश्चायतानना

asuraghnīhyamāvāsyāpyalakṣmīghnyantyajārcitā ādilakṣmīścādiśaktirākṛtiścāyatānanā

The slayer of demons, the new-moon night, the destroyer of misfortune, she who is worshipped even by outcastes, the Primordial Lakshmi, the Primordial Shakti, Form itself, and she of the wide face.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.12.6.16)

आदित्यपदवीचाराप्यादित्यपरिसेविता । आचार्यावर्तनाचाराप्यादिमूर्तिनिवासिनी

ādityapadavīcārāpyādityaparisevitā ācāryāvartanācārāpyādimūrtinivāsinī

She who moves along the sun's path, she who is attended upon by the sun, whose conduct is fit to be followed by teachers, and she who dwells in the primordial form.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.12.6.17)

आग्नेयी चामरी चाद्या चाराध्या चासनस्थिता । आधारनिलयाधारा चाकाशान्तनिवासिनी

āgneyī cāmarī cādyā cārādhyā cāsanasthitā ādhāranilayādhārā cākāśāntanivāsinī

Of the nature of fire, immortal, the Primal One, worthy of worship, seated upon her seat, abiding in the root support, the Support itself, and she who dwells at the farthest reach of the sky.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.12.6.18)

आद्याक्षरसमायुक्ता चान्तराकाशरूपिणी । आदित्यमण्डलगता चान्तरध्वान्तनाशिनी

ādyākṣarasamāyuktā cāntarākāśarūpiṇī ādityamaṇḍalagatā cāntaradhvāntanāśinī

United with the primal syllable, of the form of inner space, present in the orb of the sun, and the destroyer of inner darkness.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.12.6.19)

इन्दिरा चेष्टदा चेष्टा चेन्दीवरनिभेक्षणा । इरावती चेन्द्रपदा चेन्द्राणी चेन्दुरूपिणी

indirā ceṣṭadā ceṣṭā cendīvaranibhekṣaṇā irāvatī cendrapadā cendrāṇī cendurūpiṇī

Indira, the granter of desires, the Beloved, she whose eyes resemble the blue lotus, Iravati, she who holds Indra's rank, Indrani, and she of the form of the moon.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.12.6.20)

इक्षुकोदण्डसंयुक्ता चेषुसन्धानकारिणी । इन्द्रनीलसमाकारा चेडापिङ्गलरूपिणी

ikṣukodaṇḍasaṁyuktā ceṣusandhānakāriṇī indranīlasamākārā ceḍāpiṅgalarūpiṇī

She who is armed with a bow of sugarcane, who fits the arrow to the string, whose form is like sapphire, and who is of the form of the Ida and Pingala channels.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.12.6.21)

इन्द्राक्षी चेश्वरी देवी चेहात्रयविवर्जिता । उमा चोषा ह्युडुनिभा उर्वारुकफलानना

indrākṣī ceśvarī devī cehātrayavivarjitā umā coṣā hyuḍunibhā urvārukaphalānanā

Indrakshi, the Goddess Ishvari, she who is free from the three afflictions of this world, Uma, Usha, she who resembles a star, and she whose face is like a cucumber-fruit.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.12.6.22)

उडुप्रभा चोडुमती ह्युडुपा ह्युडुमध्यगा । ऊर्ध्वं चाप्यूर्ध्वकेशी चाप्यूर्ध्वाधोगतिभेदिनी

uḍuprabhā coḍumatī hyuḍupā hyuḍumadhyagā ūrdhvaṁ cāpyūrdhvakeśī cāpyūrdhvādhogatibhedinī

The radiance of the stars, rich in stars, the Moon, she who moves amidst the stars, the One on high, she whose hair stands upright, and she who distinguishes the paths upward and downward.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.12.6.23)

ऊर्ध्वबाहुप्रिया चोर्मिमालावाग्ग्रन्थदायिनी । ऋतं चर्षिरृतुमती ऋषिदेवनमस्कृता

ūrdhvabāhupriyā cormimālāvāggranthadāyinī ṛtaṁ carṣirṛtumatī ṛṣidevanamaskṛtā

She who loves those with uplifted arms, garlanded with waves, the giver of the structure of speech, Truth itself, the Seer, she who bears the seasons, and she who is bowed to by sages and gods.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.12.6.24)

ऋग्वेदा ऋणहर्त्री च ऋषिमण्डलचारिणी । ऋद्धिदा ऋजुमार्गस्था ऋजुधर्मा ऋतुप्रदा

ṛgvedā ṛṇahartrī ca ṛṣimaṇḍalacāriṇī ṛddhidā ṛjumārgasthā ṛjudharmā ṛtupradā

The Rig Veda itself, remover of debts, she who moves among the circle of sages, the giver of prosperity, she who abides on the straight path, whose righteousness is upright, and the bestower of the seasons.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.12.6.25)

ऋग्वेदनिलया ऋज्वी लुप्तधर्मप्रवर्तिनी । लूतारिवरसम्भूता लूतादिविषहारिणी

ṛgvedanilayā ṛjvī luptadharmapravartinī lūtārivarasambhūtā lūtādiviṣahāriṇī

She who abides in the Rig Veda, the Upright One, she who restores lost dharma, she who arose from the boon against the spider, and she who removes the poison of the spider and other creatures.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.12.6.26)

एकाक्षरा चैकमात्रा चैका चैकैकनिष्ठिता । ऐन्द्री ह्यैरावतारूढा चैहिकामुष्मिकप्रदा

ekākṣarā caikamātrā caikā caikaikaniṣṭhitā aindrī hyairāvatārūḍhā caihikāmuṣmikapradā

The Single Syllable, the Single Measure, the One, she who is fixed in each single thing, the power of Indra, she who is mounted on Airavata, and the giver of the fruits of this world and the next.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.12.6.27)

ओङ्कारा ह्योषधी चोता चोतप्रोतनिवासिनी । और्वा ह्यौषधसम्पन्ना औपासनफलप्रदा

oṅkārā hyoṣadhī cotā cotaprotanivāsinī aurvā hyauṣadhasampannā aupāsanaphalapradā

The syllable Om, the Herb, the Woven One, she who dwells woven through warp and weft, Aurva, she who is rich in medicinal herbs, and the giver of the fruit of household fire-worship.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.12.6.28)

अण्डमध्यस्थिता देवी चाःकारमनुरूपिणी । कात्यायनी कालरात्रिः कामाक्षी कामसुन्दरी

aṇḍamadhyasthitā devī cāḥkāramanurūpiṇī kātyāyanī kālarātriḥ kāmākṣī kāmasundarī

The Goddess seated in the midst of the cosmic egg, she whose form is the sound 'aḥ', Katyayani, Kalaratri, Kamakshi, and Kamasundari, beautiful with desire.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.12.6.29)

कमला कामिनी कान्ता कामदा कालकण्ठिनी । करिकुम्भस्तनभरा करवीरसुवासिनी

kamalā kāminī kāntā kāmadā kālakaṇṭhinī karikumbhastanabharā karavīrasuvāsinī

Kamala, the Passionate One, the Beloved, the Granter of desires, she of the dark throat, she whose breasts are full like an elephant's temple, and she who is fragrant like the oleander.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.12.6.30)

कल्याणी कुण्डलवती कुरुक्षेत्रनिवासिनी । कुरुविन्ददलाकारा कुण्डली कुमुदालया

kalyāṇī kuṇḍalavatī kurukṣetranivāsinī kuruvindadalākārā kuṇḍalī kumudālayā

The Auspicious One, adorned with earrings, she who dwells in Kurukshetra, whose form is like the petal of the coral-gem lotus, the Coiled One, and she whose abode is among the water-lilies.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.12.6.31)

कालजिह्वा करालास्या कालिका कालरूपिणी । कमनीयगुणा कान्तिः कलाधारा कुमुद्वती

kālajihvā karālāsyā kālikā kālarūpiṇī kamanīyaguṇā kāntiḥ kalādhārā kumudvatī

She whose tongue is like time itself, of terrible mouth, Kalika, of the form of time, of lovely qualities, Radiance, the support of the arts, and she who is rich in water-lilies.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.12.6.32)

कौशिकी कमलाकारा कामचारप्रभञ्जिनी । कौमारी करुणापाङ्गी ककुबन्ता करिप्रिया

kauśikī kamalākārā kāmacāraprabhañjinī kaumārī karuṇāpāṅgī kakubantā karipriyā

Kaushiki, of lotus-form, she who shatters wanton desire, Kaumari, whose sidelong glance is compassion, she who reaches to the very horizon, and she who is fond of the elephant.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.12.6.33)

केसरी केशवनुता कदम्बकुसुमप्रिया । कालिन्दी कालिका काञ्ची कलशोद्भवसंस्तुता

kesarī keśavanutā kadambakusumapriyā kālindī kālikā kāñcī kalaśodbhavasaṁstutā

The Lion, she who is praised by Keshava, fond of the kadamba flower, Kalindi, Kalika, Kanchi, and she who is praised by the pot-born sage Agastya.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.12.6.34)

काममाता क्रतुमती कामरूपा कृपावती । कुमारी कुण्डनिलया किराती कीरवाहना

kāmamātā kratumatī kāmarūpā kṛpāvatī kumārī kuṇḍanilayā kirātī kīravāhanā

The Mother of Desire, rich in sacrifice, of the form of desire, the Merciful One, the Maiden, she who dwells in the sacrificial pit, the Huntress, and she who rides upon a parrot.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.12.6.35)

कैकेयी कोकिलालापा केतकी कुसुमप्रिया । कमण्डलुधरा काली कर्मनिर्मूलकारिणी

kaikeyī kokilālāpā ketakī kusumapriyā kamaṇḍaludharā kālī karmanirmūlakāriṇī

Kaikeyi, whose speech is like the cuckoo's, the Ketaki flower, Fond of flowers, she who bears the water-pot, Kali, and she who uproots the bondage of karma.

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.12.6.36)

कलहंसगतिः कक्षा कृतकौतुकमङ्गला । कस्तूरीतिलका कम्रा करीन्द्रगमना कुहूः

kalahaṁsagatiḥ kakṣā kṛtakautukamaṅgalā kastūrītilakā kamrā karīndragamanā kuhūḥ

She whose gait is like the graceful swan, the Forest, she who has performed the auspicious rites, marked with a musk tilaka, the Lovely One, she who moves like a royal elephant, and Kuhu.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.12.6.37)

कर्पूरलेपना कृष्णा कपिला कुहराश्रया । कूटस्था कुधरा कम्रा कुक्षिस्थाखिलविष्टपा

karpūralepanā kṛṣṇā kapilā kuharāśrayā kūṭasthā kudharā kamrā kukṣisthākhilaviṣṭapā

Anointed with camphor, the Dark One, the Tawny One, she who dwells in the cave, the Unchanging One, the Bearer of mountains, the Lovely One, and she within whose womb rest all the worlds.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.12.6.38)

खड्गखेटकरा खर्वा खेचरी खगवाहना । खट्वाङ्गधारिणी ख्याता खगराजोपरिस्थिता

khaḍgakheṭakarā kharvā khecarī khagavāhanā khaṭvāṅgadhāriṇī khyātā khagarājoparisthitā

She whose hands hold sword and shield, the Dwarfish One, the Sky-Wanderer, she who rides upon a bird, the bearer of the skull-staff, the Renowned One, and she who is seated upon the king of birds.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.12.6.39)

खलघ्नी खण्डितजरा खण्डाख्यानप्रदायिनी । खण्डेन्दुतिलका गङ्गा गणेशगुहपूजिता

khalaghnī khaṇḍitajarā khaṇḍākhyānapradāyinī khaṇḍendutilakā gaṅgā gaṇeśaguhapūjitā

The slayer of the wicked, she whose old age is broken, the giver of fragments of story, she whose forehead-mark is the crescent moon, Ganga, and she who is worshipped by Ganesha and Guha.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.12.6.40)

गायत्री गोमती गीता गान्धारी गानलोलुपा । गौतमी गामिनी गाथा गन्धर्वाप्सरसेविता

gāyatrī gomatī gītā gāndhārī gānalolupā gautamī gāminī gāthā gandharvāpsarasevitā

Gayatri, Gomati, the Song itself, Gandhari, she who delights in singing, Gautami, the Mover, the Legend, and she who is served by the Gandharvas and Apsarases.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.12.6.41)

गोविन्दचरणाक्रान्ता गुणत्रयविभाविता । गन्धर्वी गह्वरी गोत्रा गिरीशा गहना गमी

govindacaraṇākrāntā guṇatrayavibhāvitā gandharvī gahvarī gotrā girīśā gahanā gamī

She who is overspread by Govinda's feet, manifest as the three gunas, Gandharvi, the Cavern, the Clan, consort of the Lord of Mountains, the Deep One, and the Goer.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.12.6.42)

गुहावासा गुणवती गुरुपापप्रणाशिनी । गुर्वी गुणवती गुह्या गोप्तव्या गुणदायिनी

guhāvāsā guṇavatī gurupāpapraṇāśinī gurvī guṇavatī guhyā goptavyā guṇadāyinī

She who dwells in the cave, rich in virtue, destroyer of grave sins, the Weighty One, rich in virtue, the Secret One, she who is to be protected, and the giver of virtues.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.12.6.43)

गिरिजा गुह्यमातङ्गी गरुडध्वजवल्लभा । गर्वापहारिणी गोदा गोकुलस्था गदाधरा

girijā guhyamātaṅgī garuḍadhvajavallabhā garvāpahāriṇī godā gokulasthā gadādharā

Girija, the Secret Matangi, the beloved of Him whose banner is Garuda, the destroyer of pride, the giver of cattle, she who dwells in Gokula, and the bearer of the mace.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.12.6.44)

गोकर्णनिलयासक्ता गुह्यमण्डलवर्तिनी । घर्मदा घनदा घण्टा घोरदानवमर्दिनी

gokarṇanilayāsaktā guhyamaṇḍalavartinī gharmadā ghanadā ghaṇṭā ghoradānavamardinī

She devoted to her abode at Gokarna, dwelling in the secret circle, the giver of heat, the giver of clouds, the Bell, and the crusher of terrible demons.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.12.6.45)

घृणिमन्त्रमयी घोषा घनसम्पातदायिनी । घण्टारवप्रिया घ्राणा घृणिसन्तुष्टकारिणी

ghṛṇimantramayī ghoṣā ghanasampātadāyinī ghaṇṭāravapriyā ghrāṇā ghṛṇisantuṣṭakāriṇī

She whose form is the mantra of radiance, the Cry, the giver of dense downpours, fond of the sound of bells, the Sense of Smell, and she who delights the radiant ones.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.12.6.46)

घनारिमण्डला घूर्णा घृताची घनवेगिनी । ज्ञानधातुमयी चर्चा चर्चिता चारुहासिनी

ghanārimaṇḍalā ghūrṇā ghṛtācī ghanaveginī jñānadhātumayī carcā carcitā cāruhāsinī

Whose orb rivals the clouds, the Whirling One, Ghritachi, swift as thunderclouds, whose substance is knowledge, Discourse, the Renowned One, and she of the lovely smile.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.12.6.47)

चटुला चण्डिका चित्रा चित्रमाल्यविभूषिता । चतुर्भुजा चारुदन्ता चातुरी चरितप्रदा

The Fickle One, Chandika, the Wondrous One, adorned with a garland of many colors, the Four-Armed One, of lovely teeth, Skillfulness, and the giver of good conduct.

चूलिका चित्रवस्त्रान्ता चन्द्रमःकर्णकुण्डला । चन्द्रहासा चारुदात्री चकोरी चन्द्रहासिनी

The Crest, whose garment's hem is many-hued, whose earrings are the moon, whose smile is bright as the moon, the gracious giver, the Chakori bird, and she who smiles like the moon.

चन्द्रिका चन्द्रधात्री च चौरी चौरा च चण्डिका । चञ्चद्वाग्वादिनी चन्द्रचूडा चोरविनाशिनी

Moonlight, Nurse of the Moon, the Thief of hearts, Chandika, she whose speech trembles with sweetness, she whose crest is the moon, and the destroyer of thieves.

चारुचन्दनलिप्ताङ्गी चञ्चच्चामरवीजिता । चारुमध्या चारुगतिश्चन्दिला चन्द्ररूपिणी

Whose limbs are anointed with lovely sandal-paste, fanned by waving chowries, of lovely waist, of graceful gait, Chandila, and of the form of the moon.

Fond of graceful fire-offerings, of lovely conduct, whose arm bears the discus, she who dwells in the middle of the lunar orb, and the mirror of the lunar orb.

चक्रवाकस्तनी चेष्टा चित्रा चारुविलासिनी । चित्स्वरूपा चन्द्रवती चन्द्रमाश्चन्दनप्रिया

cakravākastanī ceṣṭā citrā cāruvilāsinī citsvarūpā candravatī candramāścandanapriyā

Whose breasts are like the chakravaka birds, Movement, the Wondrous One, of lovely grace, whose very nature is pure consciousness, possessed of the moon, and fond of the moon and of sandal.

चोदयित्री चिरप्रज्ञा चातका चारुहेतुकी । छत्रयाता छत्रधरा छाया छन्दःपरिच्छदा

The Impeller, of ancient wisdom, the Chataka bird, of lovely cause, she who moves beneath a royal parasol, the bearer of the parasol, the Shadow, and she whose retinue is the Vedic meters.

छायादेवीच्छिद्रनखा छन्नेन्द्रियविसर्पिणी । छन्दोऽनुष्टुप्प्रतिष्ठान्ता छिद्रोपद्रवभेदिनी

chāyādevīcchidranakhā channendriyavisarpiṇī chando'nuṣṭuppratiṣṭhāntā chidropadravabhedinī

The Goddess of Shadow, whose nails have hidden power, she who moves through the veiled senses, she whose foundation is the Anushtup meter, and the piercer of hidden calamities.

छेदा छत्रेश्वरी छिन्ना छुरिका छेदनप्रिया । जननी जन्मरहिता जातवेदा जगन्मयी

chedā chatreśvarī chinnā churikā chedanapriyā jananī janmarahitā jātavedā jaganmayī

The Cutter, Mistress of the Parasol, the Severed One, the Blade, fond of cutting away evil, the Mother, She who is beyond birth, Fire, and she whose form is the whole world.

जाह्नवी जटिला जेत्री जरामरणवर्जिता । जम्बूद्वीपवती ज्वाला जयन्ती जलशालिनी

jāhnavī jaṭilā jetrī jarāmaraṇavarjitā jambūdvīpavatī jvālā jayantī jalaśālinī

Jahnavi, the Matted-Haired One, the Victorious One, free from old age and death, Mistress of Jambudvipa, the Flame, Jayanti, and she who is resplendent in the waters.

जितेन्द्रिया जितक्रोधा जितामित्रा जगत्प्रिया । जातरूपमयी जिह्वा जानकी जगती जरा

jitendriyā jitakrodhā jitāmitrā jagatpriyā jātarūpamayī jihvā jānakī jagatī jarā

She who has conquered the senses, conquered anger, conquered her enemies, beloved of the world, made of gold, the Tongue, Janaki, the World itself, and Old Age.

जनित्री जह्नुतनया जगत्त्रयहितैषिणी । ज्वालामुखी जपवती ज्वरघ्नी जितविष्टपा

The Progenitress, Daughter of Jahnu, she who wishes well for all three worlds, Jvalamukhi, rich in japa, destroyer of fever, and she who has conquered the worlds.

जिताक्रान्तमयी ज्वाला जाग्रती ज्वरदेवता । ज्वलन्ती जलदा ज्येष्ठा ज्याघोषास्फोटदिङ्मुखी

jitākrāntamayī jvālā jāgratī jvaradevatā jvalantī jaladā jyeṣṭhā jyāghoṣāsphoṭadiṅmukhī

She whose very being is triumph over adversity, the Flame, the Wakeful One, the Goddess of Fever, the Blazing One, the Giver of water, the Eldest, and she whose bowstring's twang resounds through every quarter.

जम्भिनी जृम्भणा जृम्भा ज्वलन्माणिक्यकुण्डला । झिञ्झिका झणनिर्घोषा झञ्झामारुतवेगिनी

jambhinī jṛmbhaṇā jṛmbhā jvalanmāṇikyakuṇḍalā jhiñjhikā jhaṇanirghoṣā jhañjhāmārutaveginī

The Crusher of Jambha, Yawning, the Yawn itself, whose earrings are blazing rubies, Jhinjhika, whose sound is a jingling clash, and swift as a tempest-wind.

झल्लरीवाद्यकुशला ञरूपा ञभुजा स्मृता । टङ्कबाणसमायुक्ता टङ्किनी टङ्कभेदिनी

jhallarīvādyakuśalā ñarūpā ñabhujā smṛtā ṭaṅkabāṇasamāyuktā ṭaṅkinī ṭaṅkabhedinī

Skilled in playing the jhallari drum, of the form of the letter 'ña', whose arm bears that power, armed with chisel and arrow, the Chiseler, and the piercer with the chisel.

टङ्कीगणकृताघोषा टङ्कनीयमहोरसा । टङ्कारकारिणी देवी ठठशब्दनिनादिनी

ṭaṅkīgaṇakṛtāghoṣā ṭaṅkanīyamahorasā ṭaṅkārakāriṇī devī ṭhaṭhaśabdaninādinī

She for whom troops of masons raise their clamor, whose broad breast deserves the finest gold, the Goddess who makes the bowstring's twang, and she who echoes with the sound 'tha-tha'.

डामरी डाकिनी डिम्भा डुण्डुमारैकनिर्जिता । डामरीतन्त्रमार्गस्था डमड्डमरुनादिनी

ḍāmarī ḍākinī ḍimbhā ḍuṇḍumāraikanirjitā ḍāmarītantramārgasthā ḍamaḍḍamarunādinī

Damari, the Dakini, the Child, she alone unconquered by the demon Dundumara, she who abides in the path of the Damari-tantra, and she who resounds with the damaru drum.

डिण्डीरवसहा डिम्भलसत्क्रीडापरायणा । ढुण्ढिविघ्नेशजननी ढक्काहस्ता ढिलिव्रजा

ḍiṇḍīravasahā ḍimbhalasatkrīḍāparāyaṇā ḍhuṇḍhivighneśajananī ḍhakkāhastā ḍhilivrajā

She who dwells amid the sea-foam, devoted to the joyful play of children, Mother of Dhundhi-Vighnesha, whose hand holds the dhakka drum, and she who moves at ease.

Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.12.6.65)

नित्यज्ञाना निरुपमा निर्गुणा नर्मदा नदी । त्रिगुणा त्रिपदा तन्त्री तुलसीतरुणातरुः

nityajñānā nirupamā nirguṇā narmadā nadī triguṇā tripadā tantrī tulasītaruṇātaruḥ

Ever-Knowing, Peerless, Beyond the Gunas, the river Narmada, the Threefold, she who has three feet, the Lute, and the young tulasi plant.

Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.12.6.66)

त्रिविक्रमपदाक्रान्ता तुरीयपदगामिनी । तरुणादित्यसङ्काशा तामसी तुहिना तुरा

trivikramapadākrāntā turīyapadagāminī taruṇādityasaṅkāśā tāmasī tuhinā turā

She who is overspread by the footsteps of Trivikrama, she who moves to the fourth, transcendent state, radiant like the rising sun, the Dark One, the Frost, and the Swift One.

त्रिकालज्ञानसम्पन्ना त्रिवेणी च त्रिलोचना । त्रिशक्तिस्त्रिपुरा तुङ्गा तुरङ्गवदना तथा

trikālajñānasampannā triveṇī ca trilocanā triśaktistripurā tuṅgā turaṅgavadanā tathā

Endowed with knowledge of the three times, the Triveni, the Three-Eyed One, the Threefold Power, Tripura, the Lofty One, and she of the horse's face.

Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.12.6.68)

तिमिङ्गिलगिला तीव्रा त्रिस्रोता तामसादिनी । तन्त्रमन्त्रविशेषज्ञा तनुमध्या त्रिविष्टपा

timiṅgilagilā tīvrā trisrotā tāmasādinī tantramantraviśeṣajñā tanumadhyā triviṣṭapā

She who swallows the timingila sea-monster, the Intense One, the Threefold Stream, leader of the tamasic forces, knower of the special secrets of tantra and mantra, of slender waist, and Heaven itself.

Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.12.6.69)

त्रिसन्ध्या त्रिस्तनी तोषासंस्था तालप्रतापिनी । ताटङ्किनी तुषाराभा तुहिनाचलवासिनी

trisandhyā tristanī toṣāsaṁsthā tālapratāpinī tāṭaṅkinī tuṣārābhā tuhinācalavāsinī

The Threefold Sandhya, the Three-Breasted One, abiding in contentment, mighty as the drum's beat, adorned with ear-ornaments, radiant as frost, and dweller on the snow-mountain.

Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.12.6.70)

तन्तुजालसमायुक्ता तारहारावलिप्रिया । तिलहोमप्रिया तीर्था तमालकुसुमाकृतिः

tantujālasamāyuktā tārahārāvalipriyā tilahomapriyā tīrthā tamālakusumākṛtiḥ

Bound up in the web of threads of creation, fond of strings of gleaming pearls, fond of the sesame fire-offering, the Sacred Ford, and formed like the tamala blossom.

Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.12.6.71)

तारका त्रियुता तन्वी त्रिशङ्कुपरिवारिता । तलोदरी तिलाभूषा ताटङ्कप्रियवाहिनी

tārakā triyutā tanvī triśaṅkuparivāritā talodarī tilābhūṣā tāṭaṅkapriyavāhinī

The Star, joined with the three, the Slender One, attended by Trishanku, of slim waist, adorned with sesame-flowers, and she who delights in bearing her ear-pendants.

Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.12.6.72)

त्रिजटा तित्तिरी तृष्णा त्रिविधा तरुणाकृतिः । तप्तकाञ्चनसङ्काशा तप्तकाञ्चनभूषणा

trijaṭā tittirī tṛṣṇā trividhā taruṇākṛtiḥ taptakāñcanasaṅkāśā taptakāñcanabhūṣaṇā

Trijata, the Partridge, Thirst, the Threefold One, of youthful form, radiant like molten gold, and adorned with ornaments of molten gold.

त्रैयम्बका त्रिवर्गा च त्रिकालज्ञानदायिनी । तर्पणा तृप्तिदा तृप्ता तामसी तुम्बुरुस्तुता

traiyambakā trivargā ca trikālajñānadāyinī tarpaṇā tṛptidā tṛptā tāmasī tumburustutā

Consort of the Three-Eyed One, the Threefold Aim, giver of knowledge of the three times, the Offering of Libation, giver of satisfaction, the Satisfied One, the Dark One, and she who is praised by Tumburu.

तार्क्ष्यस्था त्रिगुणाकारा त्रिभङ्गी तनुवल्लरिः । थात्कारी थारवा थान्ता दोहिनी दीनवत्सला

tārkṣyasthā triguṇākārā tribhaṅgī tanuvallariḥ thātkārī thāravā thāntā dohinī dīnavatsalā

She who is seated upon Garuda, whose form embodies the three gunas, the Triple-Bent One, slender as a creeper, she whose sound is 'tha', the resonant 'tha' sound, she who ends in 'tha', the Milk-Giver, and she who is tender toward the humble.

दानवान्तकरी दुर्गा दुर्गासुरनिबर्हिणी । देवरीतिर्दिवारात्रिर्द्रौपदी दुन्दुभिस्वना

dānavāntakarī durgā durgāsuranibarhiṇī devarītirdivārātrirdraupadī dundubhisvanā

Slayer of the Danavas, Durga, destroyer of the demon Durgasura, the Way of the Gods, Day and Night, Draupadi, and she whose voice is like the war-drum.

देवयानी दुरावासा दारिद्र्योद्भेदिनी दिवा । दामोदरप्रिया दीप्ता दिग्वासा दिग्विमोहिनी

devayānī durāvāsā dāridryodbhedinī divā dāmodarapriyā dīptā digvāsā digvimohinī

Devayani, dwelling in a place hard to reach, the dispeller of poverty, Daylight, beloved of Damodara, the Blazing One, clad in the directions, and she who bewilders every quarter.

दण्डकारण्यनिलया दण्डिनी देवपूजिता । देववन्द्या दिविषदा द्वेषिणी दानवाकृतिः

daṇḍakāraṇyanilayā daṇḍinī devapūjitā devavandyā diviṣadā dveṣiṇī dānavākṛtiḥ

She who dwells in the Dandaka forest, the Wielder of the Rod, worshipped by the gods, revered by the gods, dwelling among the gods, the Hostile One toward the wicked, and she who takes the form of the Danavas.

दीनानाथस्तुता दीक्षा दैवतादिस्वरूपिणी । धात्री धनुर्धरा धेनुर्धारिणी धर्मचारिणी

dīnānāthastutā dīkṣā daivatādisvarūpiṇī dhātrī dhanurdharā dhenurdhāriṇī dharmacāriṇī

Praised by the helpless and the destitute, Initiation, whose form is the origin of all deities, the Nurse, the Bow-Bearer, the Cow, the Sustainer, and she who walks the path of dharma.

धरन्धरा धराधारा धनदा धान्यदोहिनी । धर्मशीला धनाध्यक्षा धनुर्वेदविशारदा

dharandharā dharādhārā dhanadā dhānyadohinī dharmaśīlā dhanādhyakṣā dhanurvedaviśāradā

The Bearer of the earth, the Support of the earth, the Giver of wealth, she who yields grain like milk, of righteous nature, the Overseer of wealth, and skilled in the science of archery.

धृतिर्धन्या धृतपदा धर्मराजप्रिया ध्रुवा । धूमावती धूमकेशी धर्मशास्त्रप्रकाशिनी

dhṛtirdhanyā dhṛtapadā dharmarājapriyā dhruvā dhūmāvatī dhūmakeśī dharmaśāstraprakāśinī

Steadfastness, the Blessed One, of firm footing, beloved of Dharmaraja, the Constant One, Dhumavati, of smoky hair, and she who illumines the scriptures of dharma.

नन्दा नन्दप्रिया निद्रा नृनुता नन्दनात्मिका । नर्मदा नलिनी नीला नीलकण्ठसमाश्रया

nandā nandapriyā nidrā nṛnutā nandanātmikā narmadā nalinī nīlā nīlakaṇṭhasamāśrayā

Nanda, beloved of Nanda, Sleep, praised by men, whose nature is heaven's garden, Narmada, the Lotus, the Dark-Blue One, and she who takes refuge with the Blue-Throated One.

Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.12.6.82)

नारायणप्रिया नित्या निर्मला निर्गुणा निधिः । निराधारा निरुपमा नित्यशुद्धा निरञ्जना

nārāyaṇapriyā nityā nirmalā nirguṇā nidhiḥ nirādhārā nirupamā nityaśuddhā nirañjanā

Beloved of Narayana, the Eternal One, the Stainless One, Beyond the Gunas, the Treasure, the Unsupported One, the Peerless One, Ever-Pure, and the Spotless One.

नादबिन्दुकलातीता नादबिन्दुकलात्मिका । नृसिंहिनी नगधरा नृपनागविभूषिता

nādabindukalātītā nādabindukalātmikā nṛsiṁhinī nagadharā nṛpanāgavibhūṣitā

She who transcends the mystic sound, point, and crescent, and yet is their very essence, the Woman-Lion form of Narasimha, the Bearer of Mountains, and she who is adorned by kings and serpents.

नरकक्लेशशमनी नारायणपदोद्भवा । निरवद्या निराकारा नारदप्रियकारिणी

narakakleśaśamanī nārāyaṇapadodbhavā niravadyā nirākārā nāradapriyakāriṇī

She who allays the torment of hell, she who arose from Narayana's foot, the Faultless One, the Formless One, and she who delights Narada.

नानाज्योतिःसमाख्याता निधिदा निर्मलात्मिका । नवसूत्रधरा नीतिर्निरुपद्रवकारिणी

nānājyotiḥsamākhyātā nidhidā nirmalātmikā navasūtradharā nītirnirupadravakāriṇī

She who is proclaimed as manifold light, the Giver of treasures, of stainless nature, bearer of the new sacred thread, Right Conduct, and she who wards off calamity.

नन्दजा नवरत्नाढ्या नैमिषारण्यवासिनी । नवनीतप्रिया नारी नीलजीमूतनिःस्वना

nandajā navaratnāḍhyā naimiṣāraṇyavāsinī navanītapriyā nārī nīlajīmūtaniḥsvanā

Born of Nanda, rich in nine gems, dweller in the Naimisha forest, fond of fresh butter, Woman, and she whose voice resounds like a dark-blue thundercloud.

निमेषिणी नदीरूपा नीलग्रीवा निशीश्वरी । नामावलिर्निशुम्भघ्नी नागलोकनिवासिनी

nimeṣiṇī nadīrūpā nīlagrīvā niśīśvarī nāmāvalirniśumbhaghnī nāgalokanivāsinī

She of the Blink, of the form of a river, the Blue-Throated One, Mistress of the Night, the Garland of Names, slayer of Nishumbha, and dweller in the world of serpents.

नवजाम्बूनदप्रख्या नागलोकाधिदेवता । नूपुराक्रान्तचरणा नरचित्तप्रमोदिनी

navajāmbūnadaprakhyā nāgalokādhidevatā nūpurākrāntacaraṇā naracittapramodinī

Radiant like fresh gold, presiding deity of the serpent-world, whose feet are graced with anklets, and she who delights the minds of men.

निमग्नारक्तनयना निर्घातसमनिःस्वना । नन्दनोद्याननिलया निर्व्यूहोपरिचारिणी

nimagnāraktanayanā nirghātasamaniḥsvanā nandanodyānanilayā nirvyūhoparicāriṇī

Whose eyes are deeply red, whose voice resounds like a thunderbolt, dwelling in the pleasure-garden Nandana, and she who moves above every array.

पार्वती परमोदारा परब्रह्मात्मिका परा । पञ्चकोशविनिर्मुक्ता पञ्चपातकनाशिनी

Parvati, the Supremely Generous One, whose nature is the Supreme Brahman, the Transcendent One, free from the five sheaths, and destroyer of the five great sins.

परचित्तविधानज्ञा पञ्चिका पञ्चरूपिणी । पूर्णिमा परमा प्रीतिः परतेजः प्रकाशिनी

Knower of the workings of others' minds, the Fivefold One, of fivefold form, the Full Moon, the Supreme Love, and she who illumines the supreme radiance.

The Ancient One, of the nature of the Supreme Person, the Sacred One, whose eyes resemble the white lotus, she who is immersed in the depths of the netherworld, the Pleased One, and she who increases love.

पावनी पादसहिता पेशला पवनाशिनी । प्रजापतिः परिश्रान्ता पर्वतस्तनमण्डला

The Purifier, possessed of feet, the Graceful One, she who lives on air alone, Prajapati, the Weary One, and whose breasts rival mountains.

पद्मप्रिया पद्मसंस्था पद्माक्षी पद्मसम्भवा । पद्मपत्रा पद्मपदा पद्मिनी प्रियभाषिणी

padmapriyā padmasaṁsthā padmākṣī padmasambhavā padmapatrā padmapadā padminī priyabhāṣiṇī

Fond of the lotus, seated on the lotus, lotus-eyed, born of the lotus, whose form is a lotus-petal, whose feet are lotuses, the Lotus-Woman, and sweet of speech.

पशुपाशविनिर्मुक्ता पुरन्ध्री पुरवासिनी । पुष्कला पुरुषा पर्वा पारिजातसुमप्रिया

Free from the bonds of worldly existence, the Fruitful Woman, dweller in the city, the Abundant One, the Supreme Person, the Sacred Occasion, and fond of the parijata blossom.

The devoted wife, of pure limbs, devoted to flower-like laughter, daughter of Prajnavati, the Granddaughter, worshipped by her sons, and rich in milk.

Whose deeds are golden, destroyer of demons, of eyes like the patala flower, of skillful action, devoted to the five sacred foods, and slayer of Putana.

पुष्पकाण्डस्थिता पूषा पोषिताखिलविष्टपा । पानप्रिया पञ्चशिखा पन्नगोपरिशायिनी

puṣpakāṇḍasthitā pūṣā poṣitākhilaviṣṭapā pānapriyā pañcaśikhā pannagopariśāyinī

She who stands amid a cluster of flowers, the Sun, nourisher of all the worlds, fond of drink, of five crests, and she who reclines upon the serpent.

पञ्चमात्रात्मिका पृध्वी पथिका पृथुदोहिनी । पुराणन्यायमीमांसा पाटली पुष्पगन्धिनी

Radiant as the morning sun, Brahmi, the deity of the Brahmins, praised by Brihaspati, Vrinda, and she who sports in Vrindavan.

बालाकिनी बिलाहारा बिलवासा बहूदका । बहुनेत्रा बहुपदा बहुकर्णावतंसिका

Balakini, who feeds in caverns, dwelling in caves, rich in waters, of many eyes, of many feet, and adorned with many earrings.

Whose own abode is the bodhi tree, abiding in the snare, the mirror of the mystic point, the Maiden, armed with a bow, and swift as the submarine fire.

ब्रह्माण्डबहिरन्तःस्था ब्रह्मकङ्कणसूत्रिणी । भवानी भीषणवती भाविनी भयहारिणी

She who abides both within and beyond the cosmic egg, bound with the sacred thread-bracelet of Brahman, Bhavani, the Terrible One, the Becoming One, and the remover of fear.

भद्रकाली भुजङ्गाक्षी भारती भारताशया । भैरवी भीषणाकारा भूतिदा भूतिमालिनी

Bhadrakali, serpent-eyed, Bharati, whose hope rests in Bharata, Bhairavi, of terrible form, giver of prosperity, and garlanded with prosperity.

भामिनी भोगनिरता भद्रदा भूरिविक्रमा । भूतवासा भृगुलता भार्गवी भूसुरार्चिता

भागीरथी भोगवती भवनस्था भिषग्वरा । भामिनी भोगिनी भाषा भवानी भूरिदक्षिणा

Bhagirathi, Bhogavati, dwelling in the celestial mansion, the best of physicians, the Radiant Woman, the Enjoyer, Speech, Bhavani, and she of abundant largesse.

भर्गात्मिका भीमवती भवबन्धविमोचिनी । भजनीया भूतधात्रीरञ्जिता भुवनेश्वरी

Rukmini, the Delightful Woman, Rama, Revati, Renuka, Rati, the Fierce One, whose form pleases the Fierce One, Mother of Rama, and fond of love.

Rohini, giver of kingship, the river Reva, Rama, lotus-eyed, Mistress of the full moon, endowed with beauty, and seated on a jeweled throne.

Mistress of disease, the healer of disease, the Roaring One, she who makes the hair stand on end in awe, she who is overspread by Ramachandra's footsteps, and the slayer of Ravana.

रत्नवस्त्रपरिच्छन्ना रथस्था रुक्मभूषणा । लज्जाधिदेवता लोला ललिता लिङ्गधारिणी

Clothed in jeweled garments, seated in a chariot, adorned with gold, the presiding deity of modesty, the Tremulous One, Lalita, and bearer of the cosmic sign.

Vinata, dwelling in the midst of the sky, seated on the lotus-throne, Varuni, born of the reed, the Sacrificial Fire, and she of manifold forms.

She who dwells in the midst of the sphere of wind, of the form of Vishnu, beloved of Brahma, consort of Vishnu, rich in Vishnu's grace, wide-eyed, and the Earth.

Shakambhari, Shiva the auspicious one, the Peaceful One, Sharada, Refuge for those who seek it, of slender waist, of pure conduct, and crusher of the demon Shumbha.

शोभावती शिवाकारा शङ्करार्धशरीरिणी । शोणा शुभाशया शुभ्रा शिरःसन्धानकारिणी

śobhāvatī śivākārā śaṅkarārdhaśarīriṇī śoṇā śubhāśayā śubhrā śiraḥsandhānakāriṇī

The Splendid One, of auspicious form, she who forms half of Shankara's body, the Red One, of pure intent, the Bright One, and healer of the severed head.

Verse 147 (devibhagavatam.12.6.147)

शरावती शरानन्दा शरज्ज्योत्स्ना शुभानना । शरभा शूलिनी शुद्धा शबरी शुकवाहना

śarāvatī śarānandā śarajjyotsnā śubhānanā śarabhā śūlinī śuddhā śabarī śukavāhanā

Rich in arrows, delighting in arrows, moonlight of autumn, of auspicious face, Sharabha, armed with the trident, the Pure One, Shabari, and she who rides upon a parrot.

Verse 148 (devibhagavatam.12.6.148)

श्रीमती श्रीधरानन्दा श्रवणानन्ददायिनी । शर्वाणी शर्वरीवन्द्या षड्भाषा षडृतुप्रिया

śrīmatī śrīdharānandā śravaṇānandadāyinī śarvāṇī śarvarīvandyā ṣaḍbhāṣā ṣaḍṛtupriyā

The Glorious One, delighting Shridhara, giver of delight through hearing her name, Sharvani, adored by the Night, of the six languages, and fond of the six seasons.

Verse 149 (devibhagavatam.12.6.149)

षडाधारस्थिता देवी षण्मुखप्रियकारिणी । षडङ्गरूपसुमतिसुरासुरनमस्कृता

ṣaḍādhārasthitā devī ṣaṇmukhapriyakāriṇī ṣaḍaṅgarūpasumatisurāsuranamaskṛtā

The Goddess seated in the six chakra supports, she who delights Shanmukha, of the six-limbed form of good understanding, and revered by gods and demons alike.

Verse 150 (devibhagavatam.12.6.150)

सरस्वती सदाधारा सर्वमङ्गलकारिणी । सामगानप्रिया सूक्ष्मा सावित्री सामसम्भवा

sarasvatī sadādhārā sarvamaṅgalakāriṇī sāmagānapriyā sūkṣmā sāvitrī sāmasambhavā

Sarasvati, the Ever-Present Support, the giver of all auspiciousness, fond of the Sama-chant, the Subtle One, Savitri, and born of the Sama Veda.

Verse 151 (devibhagavatam.12.6.151)

सर्वावासा सदानन्दा सुस्तनी सागराम्बरा । सर्वैश्वर्यप्रिया सिद्धिः साधुबन्धुपराक्रमा

sarvāvāsā sadānandā sustanī sāgarāmbarā sarvaiśvaryapriyā siddhiḥ sādhubandhuparākramā

Abode of all, Ever-Blissful, of beautiful breasts, robed in the ocean, fond of every sovereignty, Accomplishment, and valiant kinswoman of the virtuous.

Verse 152 (devibhagavatam.12.6.152)

सप्तर्षिमण्डलगता सोममण्डलवासिनी । सर्वज्ञा सान्द्रकरुणा समानाधिकवर्जिता

saptarṣimaṇḍalagatā somamaṇḍalavāsinī sarvajñā sāndrakaruṇā samānādhikavarjitā

She who moves within the circle of the Seven Sages, dweller in the orb of the moon, the All-Knowing One, of dense compassion, and she who has none equal or superior.

Verse 153 (devibhagavatam.12.6.153)

सर्वोत्तुङ्गा सङ्गहीना सद्गुणा सकलेष्टदा । सरघा सूर्यतनया सुकेशी सोमसंहतिः

sarvottuṅgā saṅgahīnā sadguṇā sakaleṣṭadā saraghā sūryatanayā sukeśī somasaṁhatiḥ

Loftier than all, free from attachment, of good qualities, giver of all desires, the Bee, Daughter of the Sun, of beautiful hair, and the very gathering of the moon's rays.

Verse 154 (devibhagavatam.12.6.154)

हिरण्यवर्णा हरिणी ह्रीङ्कारी हंसवाहिनी । क्षौमवस्त्रपरीताङ्गी क्षीराब्धितनया क्षमा

hiraṇyavarṇā hariṇī hrīṅkārī haṁsavāhinī kṣaumavastraparītāṅgī kṣīrābdhitanayā kṣamā

Of golden hue, the Deer, whose form is the seed-syllable Hrim, she who rides the swan, whose body is wrapped in silk, Daughter of the Ocean of Milk, and Patience, the Earth.

Verse 155 (devibhagavatam.12.6.155)

गायत्री चैव सावित्री पार्वती च सरस्वती । वेदगर्भा वरारोहा श्रीगायत्री पराम्बिका

gāyatrī caiva sāvitrī pārvatī ca sarasvatī vedagarbhā varārohā śrīgāyatrī parāmbikā

Gayatri, and likewise Savitri, Parvati, and Sarasvati; the Womb of the Vedas, the Most Excellent One, Shri Gayatri, and the Supreme Mother.

Verse 156 (devibhagavatam.12.6.156)

इति साहस्रकं नाम्नां गायत्र्याश्चैव नारद । पुण्यदं सर्वपापघ्नं महासम्पत्तिदायकम्

iti sāhasrakaṁ nāmnāṁ gāyatryāścaiva nārada puṇyadaṁ sarvapāpaghnaṁ mahāsampattidāyakam

Thus, O Narada, is the thousand names of Gayatri — bestower of merit, destroyer of all sins, and giver of great prosperity.

Verse 157 (devibhagavatam.12.6.157)

एवं नामानि गायत्र्यास्तोषोत्पत्तिकराणि हि । अष्टम्यां च विशेषेण पठितव्यं द्विजैः सह

evaṁ nāmāni gāyatryāstoṣotpattikarāṇi hi aṣṭamyāṁ ca viśeṣeṇa paṭhitavyaṁ dvijaiḥ saha

Thus these names of Gayatri produce great satisfaction; they should be recited especially on the eighth lunar day, together with the twice-born.

Verse 158 (devibhagavatam.12.6.158)

जपं कृत्वा होमपूजाध्यानं कृत्वा विशेषतः । यस्मै कस्मै न दातव्यं गायत्र्यास्तु विशेषतः

japaṁ kṛtvā homapūjādhyānaṁ kṛtvā viśeṣataḥ yasmai kasmai na dātavyaṁ gāyatryāstu viśeṣataḥ

Having performed japa, and especially having performed the fire-offering, worship, and meditation — this text concerning Gayatri should not be given to just anyone.

Verse 159 (devibhagavatam.12.6.159)

सुभक्ताय सुशिष्याय वक्तव्यं भूसुराय वै । भ्रष्टेभ्यः साधकेभ्यश्च बान्धवेभ्यो न दर्शयेत्

subhaktāya suśiṣyāya vaktavyaṁ bhūsurāya vai bhraṣṭebhyaḥ sādhakebhyaśca bāndhavebhyo na darśayet

It should be spoken only to a true devotee, a worthy disciple, and a Brahmin; it should not be shown to fallen aspirants, nor even to one's own kinsfolk if unworthy.

Verse 160 (devibhagavatam.12.6.160)

यद्गृहे लिखितं शास्त्रं भयं तस्य न कस्यचित् । चञ्चलापि स्थिरा भूत्वा कमला तत्र तिष्ठति

yadgṛhe likhitaṁ śāstraṁ bhayaṁ tasya na kasyacit cañcalāpi sthirā bhūtvā kamalā tatra tiṣṭhati

In whose house this scripture is kept in written form, no fear touches him at all; Kamala, though fickle by nature, becomes steady and dwells there.

Verse 161 (devibhagavatam.12.6.161)

इदं रहस्यं परमं गुह्याद्गुह्यतरं महत् । पुण्यप्रदं मनुष्याणां दरिद्राणां निधिप्रदम्

idaṁ rahasyaṁ paramaṁ guhyādguhyataraṁ mahat puṇyapradaṁ manuṣyāṇāṁ daridrāṇāṁ nidhipradam

This is the supreme secret, greater and more hidden than any hidden thing; it grants merit to men, and grants treasure to the poor.

Verse 162 (devibhagavatam.12.6.162)

मोक्षप्रदं मुमुक्षूणां कामिनां सर्वकामदम् । रोगाद्वै मुच्यते रोगी बद्धो मुच्येत बन्धनात्

mokṣapradaṁ mumukṣūṇāṁ kāmināṁ sarvakāmadam rogādvai mucyate rogī baddho mucyeta bandhanāt

It grants liberation to those who seek liberation, and grants every desire to those who desire; the sick is freed from disease, and the bound is freed from bondage.

Verse 163 (devibhagavatam.12.6.163)

बह्महत्यासुरापानसुवर्णस्तेयिनो नराः । गुरुतल्पगतो वापि पातकान्मुच्यते सकृत्

bahmahatyāsurāpānasuvarṇasteyino narāḥ gurutalpagato vāpi pātakānmucyate sakṛt

Men guilty of the killing of a Brahmin, the drinking of liquor, or the theft of gold, or even one who has violated his guru's bed — are freed from these sins at once.

Verse 164 (devibhagavatam.12.6.164)

असत्प्रतिग्रहाच्चैवाभक्ष्यभक्षाद्विशेषतः । पाखण्डानृतमुख्येभ्यः पठनादेव मुच्यते

asatpratigrahāccaivābhakṣyabhakṣādviśeṣataḥ pākhaṇḍānṛtamukhyebhyaḥ paṭhanādeva mucyate

From accepting improper gifts, and especially from eating forbidden food, and from heresy, falsehood and the like — one is freed by the mere recitation of this text.

Verse 165 (devibhagavatam.12.6.165)

इदं रहस्यममलं मयोक्तं पद्मजोद्भव । ब्रह्मसायुज्यदं नॄणां सत्यं सत्यं न संशयः

idaṁ rahasyamamalaṁ mayoktaṁ padmajodbhava brahmasāyujyadaṁ nṝṇāṁ satyaṁ satyaṁ na saṁśayaḥ

This stainless secret has been declared by me, O son of the lotus-born; it grants union with Brahman to men — this is true, true; there is no doubt.
