Skandha 12 · Chapter 7
The Rite of Mantra Initiation
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.12.7.1)
nārada uvāca śrutaṁ sahasranāmākhyaṁ śrīgāyatryāḥ phalapradam stotraṁ mahonnatikaraṁ mahābhāgyakaraṁ param
Narada said: I have heard the hymn called the Thousand Names of Shri Gayatri, which bestows its fruit, brings about great elevation, and confers supreme good fortune.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.12.7.2)
adhunā śrotumicchāmi dīkṣālakṣaṇamuttamam vinā yena na sidhyeta devīmantre'dhikāritā
Now I wish to hear of the excellent nature of initiation, without which one cannot gain the right to use the Devi's mantra.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.12.7.3)
brāhmaṇānāṁ kṣatriyāṇāṁ viśāṁ strīṇāṁ tathaiva ca sāmānyavidhinā sarvaṁ vistareṇa vada prabho
O Lord, tell me all of this in detail, according to the general rule, for Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and women alike.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.12.7.4)
śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca śṛṇu dīkṣāṁ pravakṣyāmi śiṣyāṇāṁ bhāvitātmanām devāgnigurupūjādāvadhikāro yayā bhavet
Shri Narayana said: Listen, I shall declare the initiation of disciples of purified mind, by which one gains the right to worship the gods, the sacred fire, and the guru.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.12.7.5)
divyaṁ jñānaṁ hi yā dadyātkuryātpāpakṣayaṁ tu yā saiva dīkṣeti samproktā vedatantraviśāradaiḥ
That which grants divine knowledge and brings about the destruction of sin — that alone is declared to be diksha by those skilled in the Veda and the Tantras.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.12.7.6)
avaśyaṁ sā tu kartavyā yato bahuphalā matā guruśiṣyāvubhāvatrāpyatiśuddhāvapekṣitau
It must certainly be performed, since it is held to bear great fruit; both the guru and the disciple are required to be utterly pure in this rite.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.12.7.7)
gurustu vidhivatprātaḥ kṛtyaṁ sarvaṁ vidhāya ca snānasandhyādikaṁ sarvaṁ yathāvidhi vidhāya ca
The guru, having duly performed all the morning rites, and having duly performed his bath, sandhya-worship, and all such observances,
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.12.7.8)
kamaṇḍalukaro maunī gṛhaṁ yāyātsarittaṭāt yāgamaṇḍapamāsādya viśettatrāsane vare
holding the water-pot in hand, silent, should return from the riverbank to his house, and, having reached the sacrificial pavilion, should take his seat there.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.12.7.9)
ācamya prāṇānāyamya gandhapuṣpavimiśritam saptavārāstramantreṇa japtaṁ vāri susādhayet
Having sipped water and controlled his breath, he should thoroughly prepare water mixed with sandal and flowers, having recited the astra-mantra over it seven times.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.12.7.10)
vāriṇā tena matimānastramantraṁ samuccaran prokṣayeddvāramakhilaṁ tataḥ pūjāṁ samācaret
With that water, the wise one, uttering the astra-mantra, should sprinkle the entire doorway, and then perform the preliminary worship.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.12.7.11)
ūrdhvodumbarake devaṁ gaṇanāthaṁ tathā śriyam sarasvatīṁ nāmamantraiḥ pūjayedgandhapuṣpakaiḥ
On the upper lintel of the door he should worship, with the mantras of their names and with sandal and flowers, Ganesha, Lakshmi, and Sarasvati.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.12.7.12)
dvāradakṣiṇaśākhāyāṁ gaṅgāṁ vighneśamarcayet dvārasya vāmaśākhāyāṁ kṣetrapālaṁ ca sūryajām
On the right doorpost he should worship Ganga and Vighnesha; on the left doorpost, Kshetrapala and Yamuna, daughter of the Sun.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.12.7.13)
dehalyāṁ pūjayedastradevatāmastramantrataḥ sarvaṁ devīmayaṁ dṛśyamiti sañcintya sarvataḥ
On the threshold he should worship the deity of the weapon-mantra, contemplating that the whole visible world is nothing but the Devi, on every side.
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.12.7.14)
divyānutsārayedvighnānastramantrajapena tu antarikṣagatānvighnānpādaghātaistu bhūmigān 14 vāmaśākhāṁ smṛśanpaścātpraviśeddakṣiṇāṅghriṇā praviśya kumbhaṁ saṁsthāpya sāmānyārghyaṁ vidhāya ca
He should drive away the divine obstacles by the astra-mantra — those in the sky by the mantra, and those on the ground by stamping his foot; then, touching the left doorpost, he should enter with his right foot first. Having entered, he should set up the vessel and prepare the general arghya.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.12.7.15)
tena cārghyajalenāpi nairṛtyāṁ diśi pūjayet vāstunāthaṁ padmayoniṁ gandhapuṣpākṣatādibhiḥ
With that arghya-water he should also worship, in the south-western direction, Vastu-natha and the Lotus-born Brahma, with sandal, flowers, and unbroken rice.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.12.7.16)
tataḥ kuryātpañcagavyaṁ tena cārghyodakena ca toraṇastambhaparyantaṁ prokṣayenmaṇḍapaṁ guruḥ
Then he should prepare the five products of the cow, and with that and the arghya-water, the guru should sprinkle the whole pavilion, up to its entrance-pillars.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.12.7.17)
sarvaṁ devīmayaṁ cedaṁ bhāvayenmanasā kila mūlamantraṁ japanbhaktyā prokṣaṇaṁ syāccharaṇunā
He should contemplate in his mind that all of this is nothing but the Devi; reciting the root mantra with devotion, the sprinkling should be done with the arrow-mantra.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.12.7.18)
śaramantraṁ samuccārya tāḍayenmaṇḍapakṣamām hummantraṁ tu samuccārya kuryādabhyukṣaṇaṁ tataḥ
Uttering the arrow-mantra, he should strike the ground of the pavilion; then, uttering the 'hum' mantra, he should perform the sprinkling.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.12.7.19)
dhūpayedantaraṁ dhūpairvikirān vikirettataḥ mārjayettāṁstu mārjanyā kuśanirmitayā punaḥ
He should fumigate the interior with incense, and then scatter the offerings about; he should then sweep them with a broom made of kusha grass.
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.12.7.20)
īśānadiśi tatpuñjaṁ kṛtvā saṁsthāpayenmune puṇyāhavācanaṁ kṛtvā dīnānāthāṁśca toṣayet
O sage, having gathered that swept material into a heap in the north-east, he should let it settle; having performed the auspicious-day proclamation, he should gladden the poor and helpless.
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.12.7.21)
viśenmṛdvāsane paścānnamaskṛtya guruṁ nijam prāṅmukho vidhivaddhyātvā deyamantrasya devatām
Then, having bowed to his own guru, he should sit upon a soft seat, facing east, and duly meditate upon the deity of the mantra that is to be given.
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.12.7.22)
bhūtaśuddhyādikaṁ kṛtvā pūrvoktenaiva vartmanā ṛṣyādinyāsakaṁ kuryāddeyamantrasya vai mune
Having performed the purification of the elements by the method already described, O sage, he should perform the nyasa of the sage and the rest, for the mantra to be given.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.12.7.23)
nyasenmuniṁ tu śirasi mukhe chandaḥ samīritam devatāṁ hṛdayāmbhoje guhye bījaṁ tu pādayoḥ
He should place the sage upon the head, the meter upon the mouth, the deity upon the lotus of the heart, and the seed-syllable upon the secret place and the feet —
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.12.7.24)
śaktiṁ vinyasya paścāttu tālatrayaravāttataḥ digbandhaṁ kārayetpaścācchoṭikābhistribhirnaraḥ
having placed the shakti, and then, by three claps, the practitioner should perform the binding of the directions with three snaps of the fingers.
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.12.7.25)
prāṇāyāmaṁ tataḥ kṛtvā mūlamantramanusmaran mātṛkāṁ vinyaseddehe tatprakārastathocyate
Then, having performed pranayama and calling to mind the root mantra, he should place the letters of the alphabet upon the body; the manner of this is now described.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.12.7.26)
oṁ aṁ nama iti procya nyasecchirasi mantravit evameva tu sarveṣu nyasektyāneṣu vai mune
O sage, uttering 'Om am namah', the knower of mantra should place it on the head; in just this way, in all the places of nyasa.
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.12.7.27)
mūlamantraṁ ṣaḍaṅgaṁ ca nyasedaṅgeṣu sattamaḥ aṅguṣṭhādiṣvaṅgulīṣu hṛdayādiṣu ca kramāt
The best of practitioners should place the root mantra with its six limbs upon the limbs — upon the fingers beginning with the thumb, and upon the heart and the rest, in order.
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.12.7.28)
namaḥ svāhāvaṣaḍyuktairhuṁvauṣaṭphaṭpadānvitaiḥ praṇavādiyutairmantraiḥ ṣaḍbhireva ṣaḍaṅgakam
With the six mantras joined to the words 'namah', 'svaha', 'vashat', 'hum', 'vaushat', and 'phat', each preceded by Om, the six limbs are formed.
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.12.7.29)
varṇanyāsādikaṁ paścānmūlamantrasya yojayet sthāneṣu tattatkalpokteṣviti nyāsavidhiḥ smṛtaḥ
Thereafter he should apply the placement of the syllables of the root mantra upon their respective places as declared in the ritual manuals — thus is the rule of nyasa remembered.
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.12.7.30)
tato nije śarīre'smiṁścintayedāsanaṁ śubham dakṣāṁse ca nyaseddharmaṁ vāmāṁse jñānameva ca
Then, within his own body, he should contemplate an auspicious seat; he should place Dharma upon the right shoulder, and Knowledge upon the left.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.12.7.31)
vāmorau cāpi vairāgyaṁ dakṣorāvatha vinyaset aiśvaryaṁ mukhadeśe tu mune dhyāyedadharmakam
Upon the left thigh he should place Dispassion, and upon the right thigh, Sovereignty; at the region of the mouth he should meditate upon Adharma.
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.12.7.32)
vāmapārśve nābhideśe dakṣapārśve tathā punaḥ nañādīścāpi jñānādīnpūrvoktāneva vinyaset
On the left side, at the navel, and again on the right side, he should place their opposites — Ignorance and the rest, contrary to the previously named.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.12.7.33)
pādā dharmādayaḥ proktāḥ pīṭhasya munisattama adharmādyāstu gātrāṇi smṛtāni munipuṅgavaiḥ
O best of sages, Dharma and the rest are declared to be the feet of the mystic seat; and Adharma and the rest are remembered as its limbs.
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.12.7.34)
madhye'nantaṁ hṛdi sthāne nyasenmṛdvāsane sthale prapañcapadmaṁ vimalaṁ tasminsūryendupāvakān
In the middle, at the place of the heart, he should place Ananta upon that soft seat; and upon the stainless lotus of manifestation, the Sun, Moon, and Fire —
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.12.7.35)
nyasetkalāyutānmantrī saṅkṣepāttā vadāmyaham sūryasya dvādaśa kalāstā indoḥ ṣoḍaśa smṛtāḥ
— the practitioner should place these together with their digit-portions; I shall tell these briefly: the sun has twelve digits, and the moon sixteen,
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.12.7.36)
daśa vahneḥ kalāḥ proktāstābhiryuktāṁstu tānsmaret sattvaṁ rajastamaścaiva nyasetteṣāmathopari
and fire is declared to have ten digits; one should remember them as joined with these. Above them, he should place sattva, rajas, and tamas,
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.12.7.37)
ātmānamantarātmānaṁ paramātmānameva ca jñānātmānaṁ nyasedvidvānitthaṁ pīṭhasya kalpanā
and the wise one should place the Self, the Inner Self, the Supreme Self, and the Self of Knowledge; thus is the construction of the mystic seat.
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.12.7.38)
amukāsanāya nama iti mantreṇa sādhakaḥ āsanaṁ pūjayitvā tu tasmindhyāyetparāmbikām
With the mantra 'Salutation to such-and-such a seat', the practitioner, having worshipped the seat, should then meditate upon the Supreme Mother seated there.
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.12.7.39)
kalpoktavidhinā mantrī deyamantrasya devatām mānasairupacāraiśca pūjayettāṁ yathāvidhi
According to the procedure declared in the manuals, the practitioner should duly worship the deity of the mantra with the mental offerings.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.12.7.40)
mudrāḥ pradarśayedvidvānkalpoktā modakārikāḥ yābhirviracitābhistu modo devyāstu jāyate
The wise one should display the hand-gestures declared in the ritual texts, which bring delight, by whose performance joy arises in the Devi.
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.12.7.41)
śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca tataḥ svavāmabhāgāgre ṣaṭkoṇopari vartulam caturasrayutaṁ samyaṅmadhye maṇḍalamālikhet
Shri Narayana said: Then, in front of his own left side, he should carefully draw a mandala with a hexagon, above which is a circle, joined with a square.
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.12.7.42)
madhye trikoṇaṁ saṁlikhya śaṅkhamudrāṁ pradarśayet ṣaḍaṅgāni ca ṣaṭkoṇeṣvarcayetkusumādibhiḥ
Having drawn a triangle in the middle, he should display the conch-gesture, and worship the six limbs in the six corners with flowers and the rest.
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.12.7.43)
agnyādiṣu tu koṇeṣu ṣaḍaṅgārcanamācaret ādhārapātramādāya śaṅkhasya munisattama
He should perform the worship of the six limbs in the corners beginning with the fire-corner; O best of sages, then taking the base-vessel of the conch —
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.12.7.44)
astramantreṇa samprokṣya sthāpayettatra maṇḍale maṁ vahnimaṇḍalāyoktvā tato daśakalātmane
— having sprinkled it with the astra-mantra, he should place it there on the mandala; having uttered 'Mam, to the orb of fire', and then 'to him of ten digits',
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.12.7.45)
amukadevyā arghyapātrasthānāya nama ityapi mantro'yamuktaḥ śaṅkhasyāpyādhārasthāpane budhaiḥ
'salutation to the place of the arghya-vessel of such-and-such a Devi' — this mantra has been declared by the wise for the establishment of the base of the conch.
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.12.7.46)
ādhāre pūrvamārabhya pradakṣiṇakrameṇa tu daśa vahnikalāḥ pūjyā vahnimaṇḍalasaṁsthitāḥ
Beginning from the east upon the base, and proceeding clockwise, the ten digits of fire, abiding in the orb of fire, should be worshipped.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.12.7.47)
tato vai mūlamantreṇa prokṣitaṁ śaṅkhamuttamam sthāpayettatra cādhāre mūlamantramanusmaran
Then, having sprinkled the excellent conch with the root mantra, he should place it there upon the base, calling the root mantra to mind.
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.12.7.48)

Having uttered 'Am, to the orb of the sun', and 'to him whose digits end at the twelfth', he should then utter 'salutation to the arghya-vessel of such-and-such a Devi'.

sūryasya dvādaśa kalāstapanyādyā yathākramam vilomamātṛkāṁ procya mūlamantraṁ vilomakam
The twelve digits of the sun, beginning with 'Tapani', in their order; having recited the alphabet in reverse, and the root mantra also in reverse,
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.12.7.51)
jalairāpūrayecchaṅkhaṁ tatra cendoḥ kalāṁ nyaset oṁ somamaṇḍalāyoktvānte ṣoḍaśakalātmane
he should fill the conch with water, and there place the digit of the moon; having uttered 'Om, to the orb of the moon', and 'to him whose digits end at the sixteenth',
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.12.7.52)
amukārghyāmṛtāyeti hṛnmantrānto manuḥ smṛtaḥ pūjayenmanunā tena jalaṁ tu sṛṇimudrayā
'to the nectar-arghya of such-and-such goddess' — this mantra, ending with the heart-seed, is remembered; with that mantra he should worship the water with the hook-gesture.
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.12.7.53)

Having invoked the sacred fords into it, he should recite the mantra eight times there; having placed the six limbs in the water, he should worship the water with the heart-mantra.
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.12.7.54)

He should recite the root mantra eight times and cover the vessel with the fish-gesture; then, on the southern side, he should place the sprinkling-vessel of the conch.
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.12.7.55)
