Skandha 2 · Chapter 12
The Discourse on Speaker and Listener
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.2.12.1)
sūta uvāca tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ uvāca vacanaṁ tatra sabhāyāṁ nṛpatiṁ ca tam
Suta said: Hearing his words, Vyasa, the son of Satyavati, spoke there in that assembly to that king.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.2.12.2)
vyāsa uvāca śṛṇu rājan pravakṣyāmi purāṇaṁ guhyamadbhutam puṇyaṁ bhāgavataṁ nāma nānākhyānayutaṁ śivam
Vyasa said: "Listen, O king, I shall relate to you a secret and wondrous Purana — that meritorious, auspicious Purana called Bhagavata, replete with many tales.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.2.12.3)
adhyāpitaṁ mayā pūrvaṁ śukāyātmasutāya vai śrāvayāmi nṛpa tvāṁ hi rahasyaṁ paramaṁ mama
This I taught in earlier times to my own son Shuka; O king, now I shall relate to you as well this supreme secret of mine.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.2.12.4)
dharmārthakāmamokṣāṇāṁ kāraṇaṁ śravaṇātkila śubhada sukhadaṁ nityaṁ sarvāgamasamuddhṛtam
By hearing it, dharma, artha, kama, and moksha — all these — come to fruition; it is auspicious, ever a source of joy, and the very essence drawn from all the scriptures."
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.2.12.5)
janamejaya uvāca āstīko'yaṁ sutaḥ kasya vighnārthaṁ kathamāgataḥ prayojanaṁ kimatrāsya sarpāṇāṁ rakṣaṇe prabho
Janamejaya said: "Whose son is this Astika, and how did he come to obstruct the sacrifice? O lord, what was his purpose in protecting the serpents?
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.2.12.6)
kathayaitanmahābhāga vistareṇa kathānakam purāṇaṁ ca tathā sarvaṁ vistarādvada suvrata
O illustrious one, tell me this entire story in full detail, and along with it, O one of good vows, relate that whole Purana in full detail too."
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.2.12.7)
vyāsa uvāca jaratkārurmuniḥ śānto na cakāra gṛhāśramam tena dṛṣṭā vane garte lambamānā svapūrvajāḥ
Vyasa said: "There was a serene sage named Jaratkaru, who had never entered the household life. Once, in the forest, he saw his own ancestors hanging in a pit,
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.2.12.8)
tatastamāhuḥ kuru putra dārā- nyathā ca naḥ syātparamā hi tṛptiḥ svarge vrajāmaḥ khalu duḥkhamuktā vayaṁ sadācārayute sute vai
and then they said to him, "O son, take a wife, otherwise we shall have no supreme satisfaction. We may go to heaven, freed from our suffering,
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.2.12.9)
sa tānuvācātha labhe samānā- mayācitāṁ cātivaśānugāṁ ca tadā gṛhārambhamahaṁ karomi bravīmi tathyaṁ mama pūrvajā vai
only when you have a virtuous son." He said to them, "If I obtain a wife unsought, bearing my own name, and wholly compliant to my will,
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.2.12.10)
ityuktvā tāñjaratkārurgatastīrthānprati dvijaḥ tadaiva pannagāḥ śaptā mātrāgnau nipatantviti
then and only then shall I take up the householder's life; this I say to my ancestors in all truth." Having spoken thus, the brahmin Jaratkaru went off toward the sacred fords; and it was at this same time that the serpents had been cursed by their own mother to fall into the fire.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.2.12.11)
kaśyapasya muneḥ patnyau kadrūśca vinatā tathā dṛṣṭvādityarathe cāśvamūcatuśca parasparam
The sage Kashyapa had two wives — Kadru and Vinata; once, seeing a horse harnessed to the sun's chariot, they said this to one another.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.2.12.12)
taṁ dṛṣṭvā ca tadā kadrūrvinatāmidamabravīt kiṁvarṇo'yaṁ hayo bhadre satyaṁ prabrūhi māciram
Seeing it, Kadru said to Vinata, "O gentle one, what colour is this horse? Tell me truly, and without delay."
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.2.12.13)
vinatovāca śveta evāśvarājo'yaṁ kiṁ vā tvaṁ manyase śubhe brūhi varṇaṁ tvamapyasya tatastu vipaṇāvahe
Vinata said: "O gentle one, this king of horses is white — what do you think? Tell me too what colour you see him as, and then let us wager on it."
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.2.12.14)
kadruruvāca kṛṣṇavarṇamahaṁ manye hayamenaṁ śucismite ehi sārdhaṁ mayā divyaṁ dāsībhāvāya bhāmini
Kadru said: "O pure-smiling one, I regard this horse as black. Come, O lovely one, let us wager on this — the loser to become the other's servant."
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.2.12.15)
sūta uvāca kadrūśca svasutānāha sarvānsarpānvaśe sthitān bālāñchyāmānprakurvantu yāvato'śvaśarīrake
Suta said: Kadru told all her serpent sons, who were subject to her will, to become dark and cling to that horse's body.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.2.12.16)
neti kecana tatrāhustānathāsau śaśāpa ha janamejayasya yajñe vai gamiṣyatha hutāśanam
Some of the serpents there refused; and then she cursed them, saying, "All of you shall go into the fire at Janamejaya's sacrifice."
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.2.12.17)
anye cakrurhayaṁ sarpāḥ karburaṁ varṇabhogakaiḥ veṣṭayitvāsya pucchaṁ tu mātuḥ priyacikīrṣayā
The other serpents, desiring to please their mother, wound themselves about the horse's tail and made him appear speckled and mottled.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.2.12.18)
bhaginyau ca susaṁyukte gatvā dadṛśaturhayam karburaṁ taṁ hayaṁ dṛṣṭvā vinatā cātiduḥkhitā
The two sisters went there together and beheld the horse. Seeing that speckled horse, Vinata was struck with great sorrow.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.2.12.19)
tadājagāma garuḍaḥ sutastasyā mahābalaḥ sa dṛṣṭvā mātaraṁ dīnāmapṛcchatpannagāśanaḥ
At that moment her mighty son Garuda arrived there. That serpent-eating son, seeing his mother so downcast, asked her.
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.2.12.20)
mātaḥ kathaṁ sudīnāsi ruditeva vibhāsi me jīvamāne mayi sute tathānye ravisārathau
"O mother, why are you so distressed? You seem to me as if you are weeping. Though I your son am alive, and the other one too, the sun's charioteer (Aruna) —
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.2.12.21)
duḥkhitāsi tato vāṁ dhigjīvitaṁ cārulocane kiṁ jātena sutenātha yadi mātā suduḥkhitā
yet you grieve, O fair-eyed one; cursed then be such a life. If a mother is so deeply sorrowful, what use is the son once born to her?
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.2.12.22)
śaṁsa me kāraṇaṁ mātaḥ karomi vigatajvarām vinatovāca sapatnyā dāsyahaṁ putra kiṁ bravīmi vṛthā kṣatā
O mother, tell me the cause of this, I shall free you from that grief." Vinata said: "O son, I have become the slave of my co-wife. Wounded thus in vain, what more can I say to you?
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.2.12.23)
vaha māṁ sā bravītyadya tenāsmi duḥkhitā suta garuḍa uvāca vahiṣye'haṁ tatra kila yatra sā gantumutsukā
"Carry me today" — this is what she says to me, and it is for this that I am grieved, O son." Garuda said: "I myself shall carry her wherever she wishes to go.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.2.12.24)
mā śokaṁ kuru kalyāṇi niścintāṁ tvāṁ karomyaham vyāsa uvāca ityuktā sā gatā pārśvaṁ kadrośca vinatā tadā
O blessed one, do not grieve; I shall set your mind at rest." Vyasa said: Thus spoken to, Vinata then went to Kadru's side,
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.2.12.25)
dāsībhāvamapākartuṁ garuḍo'pi mahābalaḥ uvāha tāṁ saputrāṁ vai sindhoḥ pāraṁ jagāma ha
and the mighty Garuda too, to do away with that servitude, carried her along with her sons across the ocean.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.2.12.26)
gatvā tāṁ garuḍaḥ prāha brūhi mātarnamo'stu te kathaṁ mucyeta me mātā dāsībhāvādasaṁśayam
Going there, Garuda said to her, "O mother, tell me, I bow to you — how, without any doubt, may my mother be freed from this servitude?"
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.2.12.27)
kadrūruvāca amṛtaṁ devalokāttvaṁ balādānīya me sutān samarpaya sutādyāśu mātaraṁ mocayābalām
Kadru said: "Bring me, by force, the nectar of immortality from the world of the gods, give it to my sons — swiftly free your mother from this servitude, O son."
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.2.12.28)
vyāsa uvāca ityuktaḥ prayayau śīghramindralokaṁ mahābalaḥ kṛtvā yuddhaṁ jahārāśu sudhākumbhaṁ khagottamaḥ
Vyasa said: Thus told, that mighty one swiftly departed for Indra's realm; that excellent bird, waging battle, at once seized the vessel of nectar.
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.2.12.29)
samānīyāmṛtaṁ mātre vainateyaḥ samarpayat mocitā vinatā tena dāsībhāvādasaṁśayam
Bringing that nectar, the son of Vinata (Garuda) delivered it to his mother; and thus Vinata was, without any doubt, freed from that servitude.
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.2.12.30)
amṛtaṁ sañjahārendraḥ snātuṁ sarpā yadā gatāḥ dāsībhāvādvinirmuktā vinatā vipaterbalāt
When the serpents went off to bathe, Indra took back that nectar. Thus, through her son's own valour, Vinata was freed from that state of servitude.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.2.12.31)
tatrāstīrṇāḥ kuśāstaistu līḍhāḥ pannaganāmakaiḥ dvijihvāste susampannāḥ kuśāgrasparśamātrataḥ
The nagas licked the kusha grass strewn there; and by that mere touch of the kusha grass's tip, those serpents' tongues split into two, becoming forked.
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.2.12.32)
mātrā śaptāśca ye nāgā vāsukipramukhāḥ śucā brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ gatvā te hocuḥ śāpajaṁ bhayam
Those nagas, headed by Vasuki, who had been cursed by their own mother in a fit of grief, went and took refuge with Brahma and told him of the fear born of that curse.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.2.12.33)
tānāha bhagavānbrahmā jaratkārurmahāmuniḥ vāsukerbhaginīṁ tasmai arpayadhvaṁ sanāmikām
The lord Brahma said to them, "There is a great sage named Jaratkaru; let Vasuki give to him his own sister, who bears that same name.
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.2.12.34)
tasyāṁ yo jāyate putraḥ sa vastrātā bhaviṣyati āstīka iti nāmāsau bhavitā nātra saṁśayaḥ
Whatever son is born to them shall be your protector, who shall deliver you all; his name shall be Astika, of this there is no doubt."
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.2.12.35)
vāsukistu tadākarṇya vacanaṁ brahmaṇaḥ śivam vanaṁ gatvā sutāṁ tasmai dadau vinayapūrvakam
Hearing this, Vasuki, accepting Brahma's gracious counsel, went to the forest and gave his sister to him (Jaratkaru) with the greatest humility.
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.2.12.36)
sanāmāṁ tāṁ munirjñātvā jaratkāruruvāca tam apriyaṁ me yadā kuryāttadā tāṁ santyajāmyaham
Knowing her to bear the same name, the sage Jaratkaru said to her, "The day you do anything displeasing to me, that very day I shall abandon you."
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.2.12.37)
vāgbandhaṁ tādṛśaṁ kṛtvā munirjagrāha tāṁ svayam dattvā ca vāsukiḥ kāmaṁ bhavanaṁ svaṁ jagāma ha
Having made this bond of words, the sage himself accepted her; and Vasuki, having thus given her over as desired, returned to his own abode.
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.2.12.38)
kṛtvā parṇakuṭīṁ śubhrāṁ jaratkārurmahāvane tayā saha sukhaṁ prāpa ramamāṇaḥ parantapa
Building a fair hut of leaves in that great forest, O scorcher of foes, Jaratkaru dwelt happily there, sporting together with her.
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.2.12.39)
ekadā bhojanaṁ kṛtvā supto'sau munisattamaḥ bhaginī vāsukestatra saṁsthitā varavarṇinī
Once, having eaten, that excellent sage fell asleep; at that time Vasuki's lovely sister sat there beside him.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.2.12.40)
na sambodhayitavyo'haṁ tvayā kānte kathañcana ityuktvā tu gato nidrāṁ munistāṁ sudatīṁ tadā
"O beloved, you must never wake me" — having said this, that sage, before that lovely woman, fell into a deep sleep.
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.2.12.41)
ravirastagiriṁ prāptaḥ sandhyākāla upasthite kiṁ karomi na me śāntistyajenmāṁ bodhitaḥ punaḥ
The sun reached its setting mountain, the twilight hour arrived — "What am I to do now? I find no peace — if I wake him, he will abandon me.
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.2.12.42)
dharmalopabhayādbhītā jaratkāruracintayat nocetprabothayāmyenaṁ sandhyākālo vṛthā vrajet
Fearful of the loss of religious observance, Jaratkaru (his wife, of the same name) began to think, "If I do not wake him, this twilight hour will pass in vain.
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.2.12.43)
dharmanāśādvaraṁ tyāgastathāpi maraṇaṁ dhruvam dharmahānirnarāṇāṁ hi narakāya bhavetpunaḥ
Rather than the loss of religious duty, abandonment (by my husband) is the better fate, though it be, for me, as certain as death itself. For men, the loss of dharma leads again only to hell."
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.2.12.44)
iti sañcintya sā bālā taṁ muniṁ pratyabodhayat sandhyākālo'pi sañjāta uttiṣṭhottiṣṭhasuvrata
Reflecting thus, that young woman awakened the sage — "The twilight hour has come; rise, rise, O one of good vows!"
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.2.12.45)
utthito'sau muniḥ kopāttāmuvāca vrajāmyaham tvaṁ tu bhrātṛgṛhaṁ yāhi nidrāvicchedakāriṇī
Rising in anger, that sage said to her, "I now depart. Return to your brother's house — you have broken my sleep."
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.2.12.46)
vepamānābravīdvākyamityuktā muninā tadā bhrātrā dattā yadarthaṁ tatkathaṁ syādamitaprabha
Trembling, that woman, thus addressed by the sage, said, "O one of immeasurable splendour, how then shall the purpose for which my brother gave me to you be fulfilled?"
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.2.12.47)
muniḥ prāha jaratkāruṁ tadastīti nirākulaḥ gatā sā muninā tyaktā vāsukeḥ sadanaṁ tadā
The sage said to Jaratkaru, "It shall indeed come to pass" — saying this, he became free of worry. Then, abandoned by the sage, she went to Vasuki's house.
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.2.12.48)
Asked by her brother, she related just what her husband had said — "He said, "It shall indeed come to pass," and having said this, that excellent sage abandoned me and departed."
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.2.12.49)
vāsukistu tadākarṇya satyāvāṅmunirityuta viśvāsaṁ ca paraṁ kṛtvā bhaginīṁ tāṁ samāśrayat
Hearing this, Vasuki reflected that the sage's word was true, and, placing the utmost trust in it, gave shelter to his sister in his own home.
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.2.12.50)
tataḥ kālena kiyatā jāto'sau munibālakaḥ āstīka iti nāmāsau vikhyātaḥ kurusattama
Then, after some time had passed, that sage-child was born; O foremost of the Kurus, he became renowned by the name Astika.
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.2.12.51)
tenāyaṁ rakṣito yajñastava pārthivasattama mātṛpakṣasya rakṣārthaṁ muninā bhāvitātmanā
O best of kings, it was he who protected this sacrifice of yours — that noble-souled sage acting for the protection of his mother's lineage.
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.2.12.52)
bhavyaṁ kṛtaṁ mahārāja mānito'yaṁ tvayā muniḥ yāyāvarakulotpano vāsukerbhaginīsutaḥ
O great king, you have done a fine and gracious thing, honouring this sage — one born in the Yayavara lineage, son of Vasuki's sister.
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.2.12.53)
svasti te'stu mahābāho bhārataṁ sakalaṁ śrutam dānāni bahu dattāni pūjitā munayastathā
O mighty-armed one, may all be well with you — you have heard the entire Mahabharata, given many gifts, and honoured the sages as well.
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.2.12.54)
kṛtena sukṛtenāpi na pitā svargatiṁ gataḥ pāvitaṁ na kulaṁ kṛtsnaṁ tvayā bhūpatisattama
Even so, despite all this well-performed merit, your father has not attained the path to heaven, nor, O best of kings, has your entire lineage yet been purified by you.
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.2.12.55)
devyāścāyatanaṁ bhūpa vistīrṇaṁ kuru bhaktitaḥ yena vai sakalā siddhistava syājjanamejaya
O king, build with devotion a spacious shrine to the Goddess, so that, O Janamejaya, complete accomplishment may be yours.
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.2.12.56)
