"— Surya, the two Ashvins, Bhaga, Pushan, the lord of the night, and the planets likewise — who among these is most worthy of worship, the grantor of the fruit of desired objects,
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.3.10.12)

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.3.10.15)

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.3.10.16)
smṛtā coccāritā devī dadāti kila vāñchitam sarvadaivārdracittā sā varadānāya sevitā
'The Goddess, when remembered and when uttered, indeed grants what is desired; ever with a heart softened by compassion, she is served for the bestowal of boons.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.3.10.17)
itihāsaṁ pravakṣyāmi śṛṇvantu munayaḥ śubham akṣaroccāraṇādeva yathā prāptaṁ dvijena vai
'I shall now tell a sacred history — let the sages listen — of how, through the mere utterance of a single syllable, it was obtained by a brahmin.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.3.10.18)
kosaleṣu dvijaḥ kaściddevadatteti viśrutaḥ anapatyaścakāreṣṭiṁ putrāya vidhipūrvakam
'In the Kosala country there was a certain brahmin renowned as Devadatta; being childless, he performed a sacrificial rite for the sake of a son, according to due rule.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.3.10.19)
tamasātīramāsthāya kṛtvā maṇḍapamuttamam dvijānāhūya vedajñānsatrakarmaviśāradān
'Taking his stand upon the bank of the Tamasa river, having built an excellent pavilion, and having summoned brahmins learned in the Vedas, skilled in sacrificial rites —
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.3.10.20)
kṛtvā vedīṁ vidhānena sthāpayitvā vibhāvasūn putreṣṭiṁ vidhivattatra cakāra dvijasattamaḥ
'— having made the altar according to rule and having established the sacred fires, that best of brahmins duly performed the son-sacrifice there.
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.3.10.21)
brahmāṇaṁ kalpayāmāsa suhotraṁ munisattamam adhvaryuṁ yājñavalkyaṁ ca hotāraṁ ca bṛhaspatim
'He appointed Suhotra, the foremost of sages, as the Brahman-priest; Yajnavalkya as the Adhvaryu; and Brihaspati as the Hotr;
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.3.10.22)
prastotāraṁ tathā pailamudgātāraṁ ca gobhilam sabhyānanyānmunīnkṛtvā vidhivatpradadau vasu
'— Paila likewise as the Prastotr, and Gobhila as the Udgatr; and having made other sages the assembly, he duly distributed wealth to them.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.3.10.23)
udgātā sāmagaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ saptasvarasamanvitam rathantaramagāyattu svaritena samanvitam
'The Udgatr, the excellent singer of the Sama chants, endowed with the seven notes, sang the Rathantara chant, joined with the svarita accent;
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.3.10.24)
tadā'sya svarabhaṅgo'bhūtkṛte śvāse muhurmuhuḥ devadattaścukopāśu gobhilaṁ pratyuvāca ha
'— but then his voice broke, as he breathed again and again; and Devadatta became swiftly angry and spoke thus to Gobhila:
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.3.10.25)
mūrkho'si munimukhyādya svarabhaṅgastvayā kṛtaḥ kāmyakarmaṇi sañjāte putrārthaṁ yajataśca me
'"You are a fool today, O chief of sages — you have broken the note, in this rite performed for a desired end, when I am sacrificing for the sake of a son!"'
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.3.10.26)
gobhilastu tadovāca devadattaṁ sukopitaḥ mūrkhaste bhavitā putraḥ śaṭhaḥ śabdavivarjitaḥ
'Gobhila, greatly angered, then said to Devadatta: "Your son shall be a fool, a rogue, devoid of proper speech!
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.3.10.27)
sarvaprāṇiśarīre tu śvāsocchvāsaḥ sudurgrahaḥ na me'tra dūṣaṇaṁ kiñcitsvarabhaṅge mahāmate
"Breathing in and out is most difficult to control in the body of any living being; there is no fault whatsoever of mine, O great-minded one, in the breaking of a note."'
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.3.10.28)
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya gobhilasya mahātmanaḥ śāpādbhīto devadattastamuvācātiduḥkhitaḥ
'Hearing these words of the great-souled Gobhila, Devadatta, terrified by the curse, spoke to him, exceedingly distressed:
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.3.10.29)
kathaṁ kruddho'si viprendra vṛthā mayi nirāgasi akrodhanā hi munayo bhavanti sukhadāḥ sadā
'"Why are you angry, O lord of brahmins, needlessly, against me who am innocent? For sages who are free of anger are ever the givers of happiness.
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.3.10.30)
svalpe'parādhe viprendra kathaṁ śaptastvayā hyaham aputro'haṁ sutaptaḥ prāk tāpayuktaḥ punaḥ kṛtaḥ
"For so slight an offence, O lord of brahmins, why have I been cursed by you? I, who was already tormented by having no son, have now been afflicted with anguish once more.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.3.10.31)
mūrkhaputrādaputratvaṁ varaṁ vedavido viduḥ tathāpi brāhmaṇo mūrkhaḥ sarveṣāṁ nindya eva hi
"Those who know the Vedas say that childlessness is preferable to a foolish son; and yet an ignorant brahmin is indeed to be despised by all.
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.3.10.32)
paśuvacchūdravaccaiva na yogyaḥ sarvakarmasu kiṁ karomīha mūrkheṇa putreṇa dvijasattama
"He is fit for no rites at all, like an animal or a shudra — O best of brahmins, what shall I do with a foolish son?
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.3.10.33)
yathā śūdrastathā mūrkho brāhmaṇo nātra saṁśayaḥ na pūjārho na dānārho nindyaśca sarvakarmasu
"An ignorant brahmin is exactly like a shudra — of this there is no doubt; he is unfit to be honoured, unfit to receive gifts, and is to be censured in every rite.
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.3.10.34)
deśe vai vasamānaśca brāhmaṇo vedavarjitaḥ karadaḥ śūdravaccaiva mantavyaḥ sa ca bhūbhujā
"A brahmin dwelling in a country, devoid of the Veda, is to be regarded by the king as a tax-payer, just like a shudra.
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.3.10.35)
nāsane pitṛkāryeṣu devakāryeṣu sa dvijaḥ mūrkhaḥ samupaveśyaśca kāryaśca phalamicchatā
"Such a foolish brahmin is not to be seated in the rites for the ancestors or for the gods; he should not be employed by one who desires the proper fruit.
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.3.10.36)
rājñā śūdrasamo jñeyo na yojyaḥ sarvakarmasu karṣakastu dvijaḥ kāryo brāhmaṇo vedavarjitaḥ
"He is to be regarded by the king as equal to a shudra, not to be employed in any priestly rites; a brahmin devoid of the Veda should be made a farmer.
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.3.10.37)
vinā vipreṇa kartavyaṁ śrāddhaṁ kuśacaṭena vai na tu vipreṇa mūrkheṇa śrāddhaṁ kāryaṁ kadācana
"The shraddha, the ancestral rite, is to be performed even without a brahmin, using a bundle of kusha grass instead; but it should never be performed with a foolish brahmin.
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.3.10.38)
āhārādadhikaṁ cānnaṁ na dātavyamapaṇḍite dātā narakamāpnoti grahītā tu viśeṣataḥ
"Food beyond what is needed for his own sustenance should not be given to an unlearned man; the giver goes to hell, and the receiver especially so.
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.3.10.39)
dhigrājyaṁ tasya rājño vai yasya deśe'budhā janāḥ pūjyante brāhmaṇā mūrkhā dānamānādikairapi
"Shame on the kingdom of that king in whose land ignorant, foolish brahmins are honoured with gifts, respect, and the like!
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.3.10.40)
āsane pūjane dāne yatra bhedo na cāṇvapi mūrkhapaṇḍitayorbhedo jñātavyo vibudhena vai
"Where in seating, honour, and gift-giving there is not even the slightest distinction — there, the distinction between the fool and the learned man must indeed be known and observed by the wise.
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.3.10.41)
mūrkhā yatra sugarviṣṭhā dānamānaparigrahaiḥ tasmindeśe na vastavyaṁ paṇḍitena kathañcana
"Where fools are made greatly arrogant through the receiving of gifts and honour, in that land a learned man should on no account dwell.
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.3.10.42)
asatāmupakārāya durjanānāṁ vibhūtayaḥ picumandaḥ phalāḍhyo'pi kākairevopabhujyate
"The prosperity of the wicked serves only for the benefit of the wicked; a neem tree, though laden with fruit, is enjoyed only by crows.
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.3.10.43)
bhuktvānnaṁ vedavidvipro vedābhyāsaṁ karoti vai krīḍanti pūrvajāstasya svarge pramuditāḥ kila
"When a brahmin learned in the Veda eats food given in charity and then practises the Veda, his ancestors indeed rejoice, sporting happily in heaven.
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.3.10.44)
gobhilātaḥ vimuktaṁ vai tvayā vedaviduttama saṁsāre mūrkhaputratvaṁ maraṇādatigarhitam
"O foremost knower of the Veda, release me from this — for in this world, having a foolish son is more reprehensible than death itself.
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.3.10.45)
kṛpāṁ kuru mahābhāga śāpasyānugrahaṁ prati dīnoddhāraṇaśakto'si patāmi tava pādayoḥ
"Show me compassion, O greatly fortunate one, and grant grace regarding your curse; you are capable of uplifting the wretched — I fall at your feet."'
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.3.10.46)
lomaśa uvāca ityuktvā devadattastu patitastasya pādayoḥ stuvandīnahṛdatyarthaṁ kṛpaṇaḥ sāśrulocanaḥ
Lomasha said: Having said this, Devadatta fell at his feet, praising him, his heart exceedingly wretched, pitiable, with tears in his eyes.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.3.10.47)
gobhilastu tadā tatra dṛṣṭvā taṁ dīnacetasam kṣaṇakopā mahānto vai pāpiṣṭhāḥ kalpakopanāḥ
Gobhila, then, seeing him there of such a wretched mind, relented — for great souls indeed feel anger only momentarily, whereas the wicked hold their anger for an age.
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.3.10.48)
jalaṁ svabhāvataḥ śītaṁ pāvakātapayogataḥ uṣṇaṁ bhavati tacchīghraṁ tadvinā śiśiraṁ bhavet
Water, by its own nature cool, becomes hot quickly through contact with fire or the sun's heat; but without that contact, it becomes cool again.
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.3.10.49)
dayāvāngobhilastvāha devadattaṁ suduḥkhitam mūrkho bhūtvā sutaste vai vidvānapi bhaviṣyati
Gobhila, filled with compassion, said to the greatly distressed Devadatta: "Your son, though born a fool, shall indeed also become learned."
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.3.10.50)
iti dattavaraḥ so'tha mudito'bhūddvijarṣabhaḥ iṣṭiṁ samāpya viprānvai visasarja yathāvidhi
Having thus received this boon, that bull among brahmins became joyful; having completed the sacrifice, he duly dismissed the brahmins according to rule.
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.3.10.51)
kālena kiyatā tasya bhāryā rūpamatī satī garbhaṁ dadhāra kāle sā rohiṇī rohiṇīsamā
After some time, his wife Rupamati, a virtuous woman, conceived in due season — she, resembling the star Rohini, being herself named Rohini.
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.3.10.52)
garbhādhānādikaṁ karma cakāra vidhivaddvijaḥ puṁsavanavidhānañca śṛṅgārakaraṇaṁ tathā
The brahmin duly performed the rites beginning with Garbhadhana, and likewise the rite of Pumsavana and the rite of adornment,
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.3.10.53)
sīmantonnayanañcaiva kṛtaṁ vedavidhānataḥ dadau dānāni mudito matveṣṭiṁ saphalāṁ tathā
— and likewise the Simantonnayana was performed according to Vedic ordinance; joyfully, considering his sacrifice fruitful, he gave gifts.
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.3.10.54)
śubhe'hni suṣuve putraṁ rohiṇī rohiṇīyute dine lagne śubhe'tyarthaṁ jātakarma cakāra saḥ
On an auspicious day, Rohini gave birth to a son, under the conjunction of the Rohini nakshatra, on a most auspicious day and ascendant; he performed the birth-rite.
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.3.10.55)
putradarśanakaṁ kṛtvā nāmakarma cakāra ca utathya iti putrasya kṛtaṁ nāma purāvidā
Having performed the ceremony of first beholding the son, he also performed the name-giving rite; the name "Utathya" was given to the son by that knower of ancient lore.
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.3.10.56)
sa cāṣṭame tathā varṣe śubhe vai śubhavāsare tasyopanayanaṁ karma cakāra vidhivatpitā
In the boy's eighth year, on an auspicious day, the father duly performed the sacred-thread ceremony for him.
Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.3.10.57)
vedamadhyāpayāmāsa gurustaṁ vai vrate sthitam noccacāra tathotathyaḥ saṁsthito mugdhavattadā
The teacher began to instruct him in the Veda, while he remained in his vow as a student; but Utathya could not utter it properly, remaining as if stupefied.
Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.3.10.58)
