The Glory of the Goddess

Chapter 23All chaptersChapter 25

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.3.24.1)

vyāsa uvāca tasyāstadvacanaṁ śrutvā bhavānyāḥ sa nṛpottamaḥ provāca vacanaṁ tatra subāhurbhaktisaṁyutaḥ

Vyasa said: Hearing that word of Bhavani's, that best of kings, Subahu, filled with devotion, then spoke these words there:

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.3.24.2)

subāhuruvāca ekato devalokasya rājyaṁ bhūmaṇḍalasya ca ekato darśanaṁ te vai na ca tulyaṁ kadācana

Subahu said: "On one side, the kingdom of the world of gods, and of this whole earth; on the other, the mere sight of you — these are never, ever equal.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.3.24.3)

darśanātsadṛśaṁ kiñcittriṣu lokeṣu nāsti me kaṁ varaṁ devi yāce'haṁ kṛtārtho'smi dharātale

For me, nothing in the three worlds equals your very sight; what boon, then, O Goddess, shall I ask? I am already fulfilled here on this earth.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.3.24.4)

etadicchāmyahaṁ mātaryācituṁ vāñchitaṁ varam tava bhaktiḥ sadā me'stu niścalā hyanapāyinī

This alone do I wish to ask, O Mother, as my desired boon: may my devotion to you be always steadfast and never fail.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.3.24.5)

nagare'tra tvayā mātaḥ sthātavyaṁ mama sarvadā durgādevīti nāmnā vai tvaṁ śaktiriha saṁsthitā

O Mother, you must always dwell in this my city; established here under the name Durga Devi, you, the Power herself, must remain.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.3.24.6)

rakṣā tvayā ca kartavyā sarvadā nagarasya ha yathā sudarśanastrāto ripusaṅghādanāmayaḥ

And the protection of this city must always be given by you — just as Sudarshana was saved, unharmed, from the host of his enemies.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.3.24.7)

tathā'tra rakṣā kartavyā vārāṇasyāstvayāmbike yāvatpurī bhavedbhūmau supratiṣṭhā susaṁsthitā

Likewise, O Mother, let the protection of Varanasi be given by you here, as long as this city stands well-founded and firmly established upon the earth.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.3.24.8)

tāvattvayā'tra sthātavyaṁ durge devi kṛpānidhe varo'yaṁ mama te deyaḥ kimanyatprārthayāmyaham

So long, O Goddess Durga, treasury of compassion, you must remain here; this alone is the boon to be granted me by you — what else should I ask?

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.3.24.9)

vividhānsakalānkāmāndehi me vidviṣo jahi abhadrāṇāṁ vināśañca kuru lokasya sarvadā

Grant me all my manifold desires; destroy my enemies; and always bring about the destruction of misfortune for the world."

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.3.24.10)

vyāsa uvāca iti samprārthitā devī durgā durgārtināśinī tamuvāca nṛpaṁ tatra stutvā vai saṁsthitaṁ puraḥ

Vyasa said: Thus entreated, the Goddess Durga, destroyer of the afflictions of the helpless, spoke to that king who stood before her, having so praised her:

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.3.24.11)

durgovāca rājansadā nivāso me muktipuryāṁ bhaviṣyati rakṣārthaṁ sarvalokānāṁ yāvattiṣṭhati medinī

Durga said: "O king, my abode shall always be in this city of liberation, for the protection of all beings, for as long as the earth endures."

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.3.24.12)

atho sudarśanastatra samāgatya mudānvitaḥ praṇamya parayā bhaktyā tuṣṭāva jagadambikām

Then Sudarshana too, coming there, filled with joy, bowing with the highest devotion, praised the Mother of the Universe:

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.3.24.13)

aho kṛpā ye kathayāmyahaṁ kiṁ trātastvayā yatkila bhaktihīnaḥ bhaktānukampī sakalo jano'sti vimuktabhakteravanaṁ vrataṁ te

"Ah, what compassion is this — what shall I say? — that I, indeed devoid of true devotion, was saved by you. Everyone speaks of you as compassionate to devotees, yet your vow of protection extends even to one bereft of devotion.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.3.24.14)

tvaṁ devi sarvaṁ sṛjasi prapañcaṁ śrutaṁ mayā pālayasi svasṛṣṭam tvamatsi saṁhārapare ca kāle na te'tra citraṁ mama rakṣaṇaṁ vai

O Goddess, you create this entire universe — I have heard this — you sustain what you yourself have created, and you devour it at the time of dissolution; my mere protection is, then, no wonder for you at all.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.3.24.15)

karomi kiṁ te vada devi kāryaṁ kva vā vrajāmītyanumodayāśu kārye vimūḍho'smi tavājñayā'haṁ gacchāmi tiṣṭhe viharāmi mātaḥ

What deed of yours shall I do? Tell me, O Goddess — or where shall I go? Grant your quick assent. I am utterly bewildered in this matter; by your command alone, O Mother, shall I go, remain, or move about."

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.3.24.16)

vyāsa uvāca taṁ tathā bhāṣamāṇaṁ tu devī prāha dayānvitā gacchāyodhyāṁ mahābhāga kuru rājyaṁ kulocitam

Vyasa said: To him speaking thus, the compassionate Goddess said: "Go to Ayodhya, O fortunate one, and rule the kingdom befitting your lineage.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.3.24.17)

smaraṇīyā sadā'haṁ te pūjanīyā prayatnataḥ śaṁ vidhāsyāmyahaṁ nityaṁ rājyaṁ te nṛpasattama

I am always to be remembered by you, and worshipped with diligence; I shall constantly bring about the welfare of your kingdom, O best of kings.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.3.24.18)

aṣṭamyāñca caturdaśyāṁ navamyāñca viśeṣataḥ mama pūjā prakartavyā balidānavidhānataḥ

On the eighth, the fourteenth, and especially on the ninth lunar day, my worship should be performed, with the rite of offering.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.3.24.19)

arcā madīyā nagare sthāpanīyā tvayā'nagha pūjanīyā prayatnena trikālaṁ bhaktipūrvakam

My image should be installed by you in the city, O sinless one, and worshipped with diligence, three times a day, with devotion.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.3.24.20)

śaratkāle mahāpūjā kartavyā mama sarvadā navarātravidhānena bhaktibhāvayutena ca

In the autumn season, a great worship of me should always be performed, according to the rite of the nine nights, filled with devout feeling.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.3.24.21)

caitre'śvine tathā''ṣāḍhe māghe kāryo mahotsavaḥ navarātre mahārāja pūjā kāryā viśeṣataḥ

In Chaitra, Ashvina, likewise Ashadha, and Magha, a great festival is to be held; O great king, at the Navaratri, worship should be performed especially.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.3.24.22)

kṛṣṇapakṣe caturdaśyāṁ mama bhaktisamanvitaiḥ kartavyā nṛpaśārdūla tathā'ṣṭamyāṁ sadā budhaiḥ

On the fourteenth of the dark fortnight, by those endowed with devotion to me, O tiger among kings, worship should be performed; likewise on the eighth, always, by the wise."

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.3.24.23)

vyāsa uvāca ityuktvāntarhitā devī durgā durgārtināśinī natā sudarśanenātha stutā ca bahuvistaram

Vyasa said: Having said this, the Goddess Durga, destroyer of the helpless one's afflictions, disappeared — she who had been bowed to and extensively praised by Sudarshana.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.3.24.24)

antarhitāṁ tu tāṁ dṛṣṭvā rājānaḥ sarva eva te praṇemustaṁ samāgamya yathā śakraṁ surāstathā

Seeing her vanish, all those kings then came together and bowed to him, just as the gods bow to Indra.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.3.24.25)

subāhurapi taṁ natvā sthitaścāgre mudānvitaḥ ūcuḥ sarve mahīpālā ayodhyādhipatiṁ tadā

Subahu too, bowing to him, stood before him, filled with joy; and all the kings then spoke to that lord of Ayodhya:

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.3.24.26)

tvamasmākaṁ prabhuḥ śāstā sevakāste vayaṁ sadā kuru rājyamayodhyāyāṁ pālayāsmānnṛpottama

"You are our lord and ruler; we are always your servants. Rule the kingdom in Ayodhya, and protect us, O best of kings.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.3.24.27)

tvatprasādānmahārāja dṛṣṭā viśveśvarī śivā ādiśaktirbhavānī sā caturvargaphalapradā

By your grace, O great king, we have beheld the auspicious Ruler of the Universe, that primal Power, Bhavani, the bestower of the fruit of the four aims of life.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.3.24.28)

dhanyastvaṁ kṛtakṛtyo'si bahupuṇyo dharātale yasmācca tvatkṛte devī prādurbhūtā sanātanī

Blessed are you, and your task is accomplished, and greatly meritorious upon this earth, since for your sake the eternal Goddess herself appeared.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.3.24.29)

na jānīmo vayaṁ sarve prabhāvaṁ nṛpasattama caṇḍikāyāstamoyuktā māyayā mohitāḥ sadā

O best of kings, all of us, wrapped in darkness, ever deluded by her Maya, do not know the power of Chandika.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.3.24.30)

dhanadārasutānāṁ ca cintane'bhiratāḥ sadā magnā mahārvaṇe ghore kāmakrodhajhaṣākule

Always engrossed in thoughts of wealth, wife, and children, we remain sunk in the terrible great ocean, teeming with the fish of desire and anger.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.3.24.31)

pṛcchāmastvāṁ mahābhāga sarvajño'si mahāmate keyaṁ śaktiḥ kuto jātā kiṁ prabhāvā vadasva tat

We ask you, O fortunate one — you are all-knowing, O wise one: who is this Power, whence did she arise, and what is her power? Tell us this.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.3.24.32)

bhava tvaṁ nauśca saṁsāre sādhavo'ti dayāparāḥ tasmānno vada kākutstha devīmāhātmyamuttamam

Be our boat in this ocean of worldly existence — the virtuous are ever compassionate; therefore, O descendant of Kakutstha, tell us the supreme glory of the Goddess.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.3.24.33)

yatprabhāvā ca sā devī yatsvarupā yadudbhavā satsarvaṁ śrotumicchāmastvaṁ brūhi nṛvarottama

What her power is, what her true form, what her origin — all this truth we desire to hear; tell us, O foremost of men."

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.3.24.34)

vyāsa uvāca iti pṛṣṭastadā taistu dhruvasandhisuto nṛpaḥ vicintya manasā devīṁ tānuvāca mudānvitaḥ

Vyasa said: Thus questioned by them, King Sudarshana, son of Dhruvasandhi, contemplating the Goddess in his mind, spoke to them, filled with joy:

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.3.24.35)

sudarśana uvāca kiṁ bravīmi mahīpālāstasyāścaritamuttamam brahmādayo na jānanti seśāḥ suragaṇāstathā

Sudarshana said: "What shall I tell, O kings, of her most excellent deeds and glory? Even Brahma and the rest, and all the remaining hosts of gods, do not fully know them.

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.3.24.36)

sarvasyādyā mahālakṣmīrvareṇyā śaktiruttamā sāttvikīyaṁ mahīpālā jagatpālanatatparā

She is the primal one of all, the great Lakshmi, the most excellent and adorable Power; in her sattvic form, O kings, she is intent on sustaining the world.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.3.24.37)

sṛjate yā rajorūpā sattvarūpā ca pālane saṁhāre ca tamorūpā triguṇā sā sadā matā

She who, in her rajasic form, creates, and in her sattvic form sustains, and in her tamasic form destroys — she is ever known as possessed of the three qualities.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.3.24.38)

nirguṇā paramā śaktiḥ sarvakāmaphalapradā sarveṣāṁ kāraṇaṁ sā hi brahmādīnāṁ nṛpottamāḥ

Beyond qualities, she is the supreme Power, the bestower of the fruit of every desire; she indeed is the cause of all, even of Brahma and the other gods, O best of kings.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.3.24.39)

nirguṇā sarvathā jñātumaśakyā yogibhirnṛpāḥ saguṇā sukhasevyā sā cintanīyā sadā budhaiḥ

In her formless aspect, O kings, she is wholly impossible to know, even by yogis; in her form-possessing aspect, she is easily served in happiness, and always to be meditated upon by the wise.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.3.24.40)

rājāna ūcuḥ bāla eva vanaṁ prāptastvaṁ tu nūnaṁ bhayāturaḥ kathaṁ jñātā tvayā devī paramā śaktiruttamā

The kings said: "You came to the forest as a mere child, surely fearful — how, then, did you come to know the Goddess, that supreme and most excellent Power?

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.3.24.41)

upāsitā kathaṁ caiva pūjitā ca kathaṁ nṛpa yā prasannā tu sāhāyyaṁ cakāra tvarayānvitā

And how were they worshipped, O king, and how honored — she who, pleased, swiftly rendered you her aid?"

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.3.24.42)

sudarśana uvāca bālabhāvānmayā prāptaṁ bījaṁ tasyāḥ susammatam smarāmi prajapannityaṁ kāmabījābhidhaṁ nṛpāḥ

Sudarshana said: "In my childhood, I obtained her most excellent seed-mantra; I constantly remember it, repeating it always, O kings — that called the Kama-bija.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.3.24.43)

ṛṣibhiḥ kathyamānā sā mayā jñātāmbikā śivā smarāmi tāṁ divārātraṁ bhaktyā paramayā parām

Spoken of by the sages, that auspicious Mother, the supreme one, was made known to me; I remember her, day and night, with the highest devotion."

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.3.24.44)

vyāsa uvāca tanniśamya vacastasya rājāno bhaktitatparāḥ tāṁ matvā paramāṁ śaktiṁ niryayuḥ svagṛhānprati

Vyasa said: Hearing his words, the kings, now intent on devotion, regarding her as the supreme Power, set out toward their own homes.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.3.24.45)

subāhuragamatkāśyāṁ tamāpṛcchya sudarśanam sudarśano'pi dharmātmā nirjjagāma sukosalān

Subahu went back to Kashi, having taken leave of Sudarshana; and Sudarshana too, righteous of soul, departed for Kosala.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.3.24.46)

mantriṇastu nṛpaṁ śrutvā hataṁ śatrujitaṁ mṛdhe jitaṁ sudarśanañcaiva babhūvuḥ premasaṁyutāḥ

The ministers, hearing that Shatrujit had been slain in battle, and that Sudarshana had triumphed, were filled with affection.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.3.24.47)

āgacchantaṁ nṛpaṁ śrutvā taṁ sāketanivāsinaḥ upāyanānyupādāya prayayuḥ sammukhe janāḥ

Hearing that the king was coming, the inhabitants of Saketa went out to meet him, bringing gifts of welcome.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.3.24.48)

tathā prakṛtayaḥ sarve nānopāyanapāṇayaḥ dhruvasandhisutaṁ dattvā muditāḥ prayayuḥ prajāḥ

Likewise all the subjects, their hands filled with various gifts, went forth rejoicing, giving them to the son of Dhruvasandhi.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.3.24.49)

striyopasaṁyutaḥ so'tha prāpyāyodhyāṁ sudarśanaḥ sammānya sarvalokāṁśca yayau rājā niveśanam

Then Sudarshana, accompanied by his wife, having reached Ayodhya, and honoring all the people, went as king to his palace.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.3.24.50)

vandibhiḥ stūyamānastu vandyamānaśca mantribhiḥ kanyābhiḥ kīryamāṇaśca lājaiḥ sumanasaistathā

Praised by bards, honored by ministers, showered by maidens with parched grain and flowers alike —
