Chapter 3All chaptersChapter 5

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.3.4.1)

brahmovāca ityuktvā bhagavānviṣṇuḥ punarāha janārdanaḥ vayaṁ gacchema pārśve'syāḥ praṇamantaḥ punaḥ punaḥ

Brahma said: Having said this, the blessed Vishnu, Janardana, spoke again: "Let us go to her side, bowing again and again."

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.3.4.2)

seyaṁ varā mahāmāyā dāsyatyeṣā varān hi naḥ stuvāmaḥ sannidhiṁ prāpya nirbhayāścaraṇāntike

"This excellent Mahamaya will surely grant us boons; let us, reaching her presence, praise her fearlessly near her feet."

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.3.4.3)

yadi no vārayiṣyanti dvārasthāḥ paricārakāḥ paṭhiṣyāmaśca tatrasthāḥ stutiṁ devyāḥ samāhitāḥ

"If the attendants stationed at the door should stop us, we shall stand there and recite, with focused mind, a hymn of praise to the Goddess."

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.3.4.4)

brahmovāca ityukte hariṇā vākye suprahṛṣṭau susaṁsthitau jātau pramuditau kāmaṁ nikaṭe gamanāya ca

Brahma said: When Hari had spoken these words, the two of us became greatly delighted and composed, exceedingly joyful, ready to go near her.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.3.4.5)

omityuktvā hariṁ sarve vimānāttvaritāstrayaḥ uttīrya nirgatā dvāri śaṅkamānā manasyalam

Saying "Om" to Hari, all three of us swiftly descended from the chariot and came out at the door, filled with apprehension in our minds.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.3.4.6)

dvārasthān vīkṣya tānsarvāndevī bhagavatī tadā smitaṁ kṛtvā cakārāśu tāṁstrīnstrīrūpadhāriṇaḥ

Seeing us all standing at the door, the blessed Goddess then smiled and swiftly turned the three of us into bearers of feminine form.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.3.4.7)

vayaṁ yuvatayo jātāḥ surūpāścārubhūṣaṇāḥ vismayai paramaṁ prāptā gatāstatsannidhiṁ punaḥ

We became young women, of beautiful form, charmingly adorned; struck with the greatest astonishment, we went again into her presence.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.3.4.8)

sā dṛṣṭvā naḥ sthitāṁstatra strīrūpāṁścaraṇāntike vyalokayata cārvaṅgī premasampūrṇayā dṛśā

Seeing us standing there, in female form, near her feet, that lovely-limbed one looked upon us with a glance full of love.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.3.4.9)

praṇamya tāṁ mahādevīṁ purataḥ saṁsthitā vayam parasparaṁ lokayantaḥ strīrūpāścārubhūṣaṇāḥ

Bowing to that great Goddess, we stood before her, looking at one another, in feminine forms and lovely ornaments.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.3.4.10)

pādapīṭhaṁ prekṣamāṇā nānāmaṇivibhūṣitam sūryakoṭipratīkāśaṁ sthitāstatra vayaṁ trayaḥ

We three stood there, gazing at her footstool, adorned with various gems, blazing like a myriad suns.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.3.4.11)

kāścidraktāmbarāstatra sahacaryaḥ sahasraśaḥ kāścinnīlāmbarā nāryastathā pītāmbarāḥ śubhāḥ

There, among her thousands of companions, some were clad in red garments, some women in blue, and others, auspicious, in yellow.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.3.4.12)

devyaḥ sarvāḥ śubhākārā vicitrāmbarabhūṣaṇāḥ virejuḥ pārśvatastasyāḥ paricaryāparāḥ kila

All these goddesses, of auspicious form, with varied garments and ornaments, shone forth at her side, devoted indeed to her service.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.3.4.13)

jaguśca nanṛtuścānyāḥ paryupāsanta tāḥ striyaḥ vīṇāmārutavādyāni vādayanto mudānvitāḥ

Some of these women sang, others danced, and others attended upon her, playing on vinas and wind-instruments, filled with delight.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.3.4.14)

śṛṇu nārada vakṣyāmi yaddṛṣṭaṁ tatra cādbhutam nakhadarpaṇamadhye vai devyāścaraṇapaṅkaje

Listen, O Narada — I shall tell you the wonder I saw there: within the mirror-like nails of the Goddess's lotus feet,

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.3.4.15)

brahmāṇḍamakhilaṁ sarvaṁ tatra sthāvarajaṅgamam ahaṁ viṣṇuśca rudraśca vāyuragniryamo raviḥ

— the entire cosmic egg, all that moves and is unmoving; myself, and Vishnu, and Rudra, and Vayu, Agni, Yama, the Sun,

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.3.4.16)

varuṇaḥ śītagustvaṣṭā kuberaḥ pākaśāsanaḥ parvatāḥ sāgarā nadyo gandharvāpsarasastathā

— Varuna, the cool-rayed moon, Tvashtr, Kubera, Indra, the mountains, the oceans, the rivers, and the gandharvas and apsaras likewise,

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.3.4.17)

viśvāvasuścitraketuḥ śvetaścitrāṅgadastathā nāradastumburuścaiva hāhāhūhūstathaiva ca

— Vishvavasu, Chitraketu, Shveta, Chitrangada likewise, Narada and Tumburu, and Haha and Huhu as well,

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.3.4.18)

aśvinau vasavaḥ sādhyāḥ siddhāśca pitarastathā nāgāḥ śeṣādayaḥ sarve kinnaroragarākṣasāḥ

— the two Ashvins, the Vasus, the Sadhyas, the Siddhas, and the ancestors likewise, all the nagas headed by Shesha, the kinnaras, the serpents, and the rakshasas,

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.3.4.19)

vaikuṇṭho brahmalokaśca kailāsaḥ parvatottamaḥ sarvaṁ tadakhilaṁ dṛṣṭaṁ nakhamadhyasthitaṁ ca naḥ

— Vaikuntha, and Brahmaloka, and Kailasa, the supreme mountain — all of this entirety we saw, present within her nail.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.3.4.20)

majjanmapaṅkajaṁ tatra sthito'haṁ caturānanaḥ śeṣaśāyī jagannāthastathā ca madhukaiṭabhau

There, the lotus of my own birth, and I myself, four-faced, standing upon it; and the lord of the universe reclining on Shesha; and Madhu and Kaitabha as well.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.3.4.21)

brahmovāca evaṁ dṛṣṭaṁ mayā tatra pādapadmanakhe sthitam vismato'haṁ tato vīkṣya kimetaditi śaṅkitaḥ

Brahma said: Thus I saw, standing there in the nail of her lotus foot, everything; astonished at seeing this, I wondered, "What is this?"

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.3.4.22)

viṣṇuśca vismayāviṣṭaḥ śaṅkaraśca tathā sthitaḥ tāṁ tadā menire devīṁ vayaṁ viśvasya mātaram

Vishnu too was overcome with amazement, and Shankara stood likewise astonished; then we recognized that Goddess as the mother of the universe.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.3.4.23)

tato varṣaśataṁ pūrṇaṁ vyatikrāntaṁ prapaśyataḥ sudhāmaye śive dvīpe vihāraṁ vividhaṁ tadā

Then, while we watched various forms of play there on that auspicious island of nectar, a full hundred years passed by.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.3.4.24)

sakhya iva tadā tatra menire'smānavasthitān devyaḥ pramuditākārā nānābharaṇamaṇḍitāḥ

The goddesses there, of joyful appearance, adorned with various ornaments, then regarded us, as we stood there, as if we were their companions.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.3.4.25)

vayamapyatiramyatvādbabhūvima vimohitāḥ prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ sarve paśyanbhāvānmanoramān

We too, because of the extreme loveliness of that place, became enraptured; all of us, glad at heart, beheld those enchanting scenes.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.3.4.26)

ekadā tāṁ mahādevīṁ devīṁ śrībhuvaneśvarīm tuṣṭāva bhagavānviṣṇuryuvatībhāvasaṁsthitaḥ

On one occasion, the blessed Vishnu, still remaining in the state of a young woman, praised that great Goddess, Shri Bhuvaneshvari.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.3.4.27)

śrībhagavānuvāca namo devyai prakṛtyai ca vidhātryai satataṁ namaḥ kalyāṇai kāmadāyai ca vṛd|hdhyai sid|hdhyai namo namaḥ

The blessed lord said: "Salutation to the Goddess, to Prakriti, and ever salutation to the Ordainer; salutation, salutation to the auspicious one, the giver of desires, to Growth, to Accomplishment.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.3.4.28)

saccidānandarūpiṇyai saṁsārāraṇaye namaḥ pañcakṛtyavidhātryai te bhuvaneśyai namo namaḥ

"Salutation to her who is of the form of being-consciousness-bliss, to the wildfire that consumes worldly existence; salutation, salutation to you, Bhuvaneshi, the ordainer of the five cosmic acts.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.3.4.29)

sarvādhiṣṭānarūpāyai kūṭasthāyai namo namaḥ ardhamātrārthabhūtāyai hṛllekhāyai namo namaḥ

"Salutation, salutation to her who is the very substratum of all, who stands immovable at the summit; salutation, salutation to Hrillekha, who has become the meaning of the half-syllable.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.3.4.30)

jñātaṁ mayā'khilamidaṁ tvayi sanniviṣṭaṁ tvatto'sya sambhavalayāvapi mātaradya śaktiśca te'sya karaṇe vitataprabhāvā jñātā'dhunā sakalalokamayīti nūnam

"I have now understood that this entire universe rests within you; from you comes its origin and its dissolution too, O mother, this day. And your power, of vast might, in bringing it about, is now known indeed to pervade every world.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.3.4.31)

vistārya sarvamakhilaṁ sadasadvikāraṁ sandarśayasyavikalaṁ puruṣāya kāle tattvaiśca ṣoḍaśabhireva ca saptabhiśca bhāsīndrajālamiva naḥ kila rañjanāya

"Having spread out this entire transformation, both real and unreal, you show it whole to the Purusha in time; through the sixteen and the seven elements, you shine forth to us, indeed, like a magic show, for our delight.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.3.4.32)

na tvāmṛte kimapi vastugataṁ vibhāti vyāpyaiva sarvamakhilaṁ tvamavasthitā'si śaktiṁ vinā vyavahṛto puruṣo'pyaśakto vambhaṇyate janani buddhimatā janena

"Without you, no substance whatsoever shines forth; pervading all entirely, you alone abide. Without Shakti, the Purusha, though set to work, is declared powerless by wise people, O mother.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.3.4.33)

prīṇāsi viśvamakhilaṁ satataṁ prabhāvaiḥ svaistejasā ca sakalaṁ prakaṭīkaroṣi atsyeva devi tarasā kila kalpakāle ko veda devi caritaṁ tava vai bhavasya

"You ever delight the entire universe with your powers, and by your own splendour you manifest it wholly. And at the time of dissolution, O Goddess, you swiftly devour it, as it were. Who indeed knows your doings, O Goddess, nor even those of Shiva?"

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.3.4.34)

trātā vayaṁ janani te madhukaiṭabhābhyāṁ lokāśca te suvitatāḥ khalu darśitā vai nītāḥ sukhasya bhavane paramāṁ ca koṭiṁ yaddarśanaṁ tava bhavāni mahāprabhāvam

"We have been saved by you, O mother, from Madhu and Kaitabha; and your vastly extended worlds have indeed been shown to us; we have been brought to the very summit of the abode of bliss — this vision of you, O Bhavani, is of the greatest majesty.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.3.4.35)

nāhaṁ bhavo na ca viriñci viveda mātaḥ ko'nyo hi vetti caritaṁ tava durvibhāvyam kānīha santi bhuvanāni mahāprabhāve hyasminbhavāni racite racanākalāpe

"Neither I, nor Shiva, nor Brahma knows you, O mother — who else, indeed, could understand your doings, so hard to comprehend? What worlds indeed exist, O great and mighty Bhavani, in this array of creation you have fashioned?

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.3.4.36)

asmābhiratra bhuvane hariranya eva dṛṣṭaḥ śivaḥ kamalajaḥ prathitaprabhāvaḥ anyeṣu devi bhuvanepu na santi kiṁ te kiṁ vidma devi vitataṁ tava suprabhāvam

"In this world we have seen another Hari, another Shiva, another lotus-born Brahma of widely-renowned glory — are there not others like them in other worlds, O Goddess? What do we know of your vast and glorious power, O Goddess?

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.3.4.37)

yāce'mba te'ṅghrikamalaṁ praṇipatya kāmaṁ citte sadā vasatu rūpamidaṁ tavaitat nāmāpi vaktrakuhare satataṁ tavaiva sandarśanaṁ tava padāmbujayoḥ sadaiva

"Bowing down, O mother, I earnestly beg of your lotus feet: may this very form of yours ever dwell in my heart, and may your very name ever remain in the hollow of my mouth, and may I ever have a constant vision of your lotus feet.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.3.4.38)

bhṛtyo'yamasti satataṁ mayi bhāvanīyaṁ tvāṁ svāminīti manasā nanu cintayāmi eṣā''vayoraviratā kila devi bhūyādvyāptiḥ sadaiva jananī sutayorivārthe

"This one, myself, is ever your servant — this must be borne in mind. I think of you, indeed, in my mind, as my mistress. May this unbroken bond between us, O Goddess, ever remain, like that between a mother and her son.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.3.4.39)

tvaṁ vetsi sarvamakhilaṁ bhuvanaprapañcaṁ sarvajñatā parisamāptinitāntabhūmiḥ kiṁ pāmareṇa jagadamba nivedanīyaṁ yadyuktamācara bhavāni taveṅgitaṁ syāt

"You know the entire manifold universe in full; you are the very perfected ground of omniscience. What need has a wretched being like me to petition you, O mother of the world? Whatever is fitting, do it, Bhavani, according to your own will.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.3.4.40)

brahmā sṛjatyavati viṣṇurumāpatiśca saṁhārakāraka iyaṁ tu jane prasiddhiḥ kiṁ satyametadapi devi tavecchayā vai kartuṁ kṣamā vayamaje tava śaktiyuktāḥ

"'Brahma creates, Vishnu preserves, and the husband of Uma destroys' — this indeed is the common belief among people. Is this true, O Goddess — that it is only by your will, O unborn one, that we, endowed with your power, are able to act at all?

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.3.4.41)

dhātrī dharādharasute na jagadbibharti ādhāraśaktirakhilaṁ tava vai bibharti sūryo'pi bhāti varade prabhayā yutaste tvaṁ sarvametadakhilaṁ virajā vibhāsi

"The earth, O daughter of the mountain, does not itself support the world; it is your own supporting power that sustains all. Even the sun, O granter of boons, shines only endowed with your radiance; you, stainless one, illumine this entire universe.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.3.4.42)

brahmā'hamīśvaravaraḥ kila te prabhāvātsarve vayaṁ janiyutā na yadā tu nityāḥ ke'nye surāḥ śatamakhapramukhāśca nityā nityā tvameva jananī prakṛtiḥ purāṇā

"I, Brahma, the excellent lord — it is indeed by your power alone that I am so; we are all subject to birth, not eternal. What then of the other gods, headed by Shatamakha? They too are not eternal. You alone, O mother, the ancient Prakriti, are eternal.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.3.4.43)

tvaṁ cedbhavāni dayase puruṣaṁ purāṇaṁ jāne'hamadya tava sannidhigaḥ sadaiva nocedahaṁ vibhuranādiranīha īśo viśvātmadhīriti tamaḥprakṛtiḥ sadaiva

"If you, O Bhavani, show compassion to the ancient Purusha, then he is known, today and ever, as abiding in your presence. But if not, then he — mighty, beginningless, desireless, the lord — remains ever as one whose mind is of the very nature of darkness, merely imagining himself the soul of the universe.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.3.4.44)

vidyā tvameva nanu buddhimatāṁ narāṇāṁ śaktistvameva kila śaktimatāṁ sadaiva tvaṁ kīrtikāntikamalāmalatuṣṭirūpā muktipradā viratireva manuṣyaloke

"You alone, indeed, are the knowledge of intelligent men; you alone are ever the power of the powerful. You are Fame, Beauty, the stainless Lotus, Contentment in form; you are the giver of liberation, and Dispassion itself, in the world of men.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.3.4.45)

gāyatryasi prathamavedakalā tvameva svāhā svadhā bhagavatī saguṇārdhamātrā āmnāya eva vihito nigamo bhavatyai sañjīvanāya satataṁ surapūrvajānām

"You are the Gayatri, you alone are the foremost portion of the Veda; you are Svaha, Svadha, the blessed one, the half-syllable possessed of quality. The scriptural tradition, the Veda itself, has been ordained for you, ever for the revival of the ancients of the gods.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.3.4.46)

mokṣārthameva racayasyakhilaṁ prapañcaṁ teṣāṁ gatāḥ khalu yato nanu jīvabhāvam aṁśā anādinidhanasya kilānaghasya pūrṇārṇavasya vitatā hi yathā taraṅgāḥ

"You fashion this entire manifold universe solely for the sake of liberation, for those who have entered the state of individual souls — who are truly portions of the beginningless and endless, sinless, full ocean, spread out just as waves spread out from the sea.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.3.4.47)

jīvo yadā tu parivetti tavaiva kṛtyaṁ tvaṁ saṁharasyakhilametaditi prasiddham nāṭyaṁ naṭena racitaṁ vitathe'ntaraṅge kārye kṛte viramase prathitaprabhāvā

"But when the soul comes to fully understand that this is entirely your own doing, you then withdraw all of it — this is well known — as a drama enacted by an actor: once its false inner performance has run its course, you, of widely-renowned power, come to rest, the task being done.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.3.4.48)
