Description of Jayanti's Cohabitation with Shukra

Chapter 11All chaptersChapter 13

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.4.12.1)

vyāsa uvāca taṁ dṛṣṭvā tu vadhaṁ ghoraṁ cukrodha bhagavānbhṛguḥ vepamāno'tiduḥkhārtaḥ provāca madhusūdanam

Vyasa said: Seeing that terrible slaying, the illustrious Bhrigu grew furious; trembling, and afflicted with deep sorrow, he spoke to Madhusudana.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.4.12.2)

bhṛguruvāca akṛtyaṁ te kṛtaṁ viṣṇo jānanpāpaṁ mahāmate vadho'yaṁ viprajātāyā manasā kartumakṣamaḥ

Bhrigu said: You have done a wicked deed, O Vishnu, knowing it to be sinful, O sage of great wisdom. This killing of a brahmin's wife is a thing not even to be conceived of in the mind.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.4.12.3)

ākhyātastvaṁ sattvaguṇaḥ smṛto brahmā ca rājasaḥ tathāsau tāmasaḥ śambhurviparītaṁ kathaṁ smṛtam

You are declared to be of the sattva guna; Brahma is remembered as rajasic; and Shambhu as tamasic — but how has this now come to appear reversed?

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.4.12.4)

tāmasastvaṁ kathaṁ jātaḥ kṛtaṁ karmātininditam avadhyā strī tvayā viṣṇo hatā kasmānnirāgasā

How have you become tamasic? You have done an extremely reprehensible deed. A woman who should never be slain has been killed by you, O Vishnu — and why, when she had done no offense?

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.4.12.5)

śapāmi tvāṁ durācāraṁ kimanyatprakaromi te vidhuro'haṁ kṛtaḥ pāpa tvayāhaṁ śakrakāraṇāt

I curse you, O one of wicked conduct — what else can I do to you? O sinner, it is on account of Indra that you have made me a widower.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.4.12.6)

I do not curse Indra as I curse you, Madhusudana. You are ever given to deceit, O evil-minded one — may you take birth in an insect womb!

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.4.12.7)

ye ca tvāṁ sāttvikaṁ prāhuste mūrkhā munayaḥ kila tāmasastvaṁ durācāraḥ pratyakṣaṁ me janārdana

Those sages who call you sattvic are indeed fools. You are tamasic and of wicked conduct — this is plain before me, O Janardana.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.4.12.8)

avatārā mṛtyuloke santu macchāpasambhavāḥ prāyo garbhabhavaṁ duḥkhaṁ bhuṅkṣva pāpājjanārdana

May your incarnations in the mortal world arise from this curse of mine! O Janardana, because of this sin, suffer, again and again, the pain of the womb!

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.4.12.9)

vyāsa uvāca tatastenātha śāpena naṣṭe dharme punaḥ punaḥ lokasya ca hitārthāya jāyate mānuṣeṣviha

Vyasa said: Because of that curse, whenever dharma is destroyed again and again, for the welfare of the people he takes birth here among men.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.4.12.10)

rājovāca bhūgubhāryā hatā tatra cakreṇāmitatejasā gārhasthyañca punastasya kathaṁ jātaṁ mahātmanaḥ

The king said: Bhrigu's wife was slain there by the discus of boundless splendor — how, then, did the household life of that great soul come about again?

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.4.12.11)

vyāsa uvāca iti śaptvā hariṁ roṣāttadādāya śirastvaran kāye saṁyojya tarasā bhṛguḥ provāca kāryavit

Vyasa said: Having thus cursed Hari in anger, and swiftly taking up her head and joining it to the body, Bhrigu, knowing what must be done, said —

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.4.12.12)

adya tvāṁ viṣṇunā devi hatāṁ sañjīvayāmyaham yadi kṛtsno mayā dharmo jñāyate carito'pi vā

O goddess, slain by Vishnu — I shall today bring you back to life, if the whole of dharma has indeed been known and practiced by me.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.4.12.13)

tena satyena jīveta yadi satyaṁ bravīmyaham paśyantu devatāḥ sarvā mama tejobalaṁ mahat

By that very truth may you live again, if what I speak is true. Let all the gods witness this great power of my splendor.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.4.12.14)

adbhistvāṁ prokṣya śītābhirjīvayāmi tapobalāt satyaṁ śaucaṁ tathā vedā yadi me tapaso balam

Sprinkling you with cool water, I shall revive you by the power of my austerity — if truth, purity, and the Vedas are indeed the strength of that austerity.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.4.12.15)

vyāsa uvāca adbhiḥ samprokṣitā devī sadyaḥ sañjīvitā tadā utthitā paramaprītā bhṛgorbhāryā śucismitā

Vyasa said: Sprinkled with water, the goddess was at once revived; Bhrigu's wife, of pure smile, rose then, filled with the greatest joy.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.4.12.16)

tatastāṁ sarvabhūtāni dṛṣṭvā suptotthitāmiva sādhu sādhviti taṁ tāṁ tu tuṣṭuvuḥ sarvato diśam

Then all beings, seeing her as though risen from sleep, praised the two of them from every direction, crying well done, well done.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.4.12.17)

evaṁ sañcīvitā tena bhṛguṇā varavarṇinī vismayaṁ paramaṁ jagmurdevāḥ sendrā vilokya tat

Thus revived by Bhrigu, that beautiful woman was restored; the gods, with Indra among them, witnessing this, were filled with the utmost astonishment.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.4.12.18)

indraḥ surānathovāca muninā jīvitā satī kāvyastaptvā tapo ghoraṁ kiṁ kariṣyati mantravit

Indra then said to the gods: That virtuous woman has been revived by the sage. What will Kavya, that knower of mantras, now do, after performing his terrible austerity?

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.4.12.19)

vyāsa uvāca gatā nidrā surendrasya dehe'kṣemamabhūnnṛpa smṛtvā kāvyasya vṛttāntaṁ mantrārthamatidāruṇam

Vyasa said: The lord of gods' sleep had departed, O king, but recalling the terrible matter of Kavya's quest for mantras, an unease arose in his body.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.4.12.20)

vimṛśya manasā śakro jayantīṁ svasutāṁ tadā uvāca kanyāṁ cārvaṅgīṁ smitapūrvamidaṁ vacaḥ

Reflecting within his mind, Indra then spoke to his own daughter Jayanti, that lovely-limbed maiden, these words, with a smile —

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.4.12.21)

gaccha putri mayā dattā kāvyāya tvaṁ tapasvine samārādhaya tanvaṅgi matkṛte taṁ vaśaṁ kuru

Go, my daughter — given by me to the ascetic Kavya. Win his favor, O slender one, and, for my sake, bring him under your control.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.4.12.22)

upacārairmuniṁ taistaiḥ samārādhya manaḥpriyaiḥ bhayaṁ me tarasā gatvā hara tatra varāśrame

Winning over the sage with such pleasing services, go swiftly there, to that excellent hermitage, and remove my fear.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.4.12.23)

sā piturvacanaṁ śrutvā tatrāgacchanmanoramā tamapaśyadviśālākṣī pibantaṁ dhūmamāśrame

Hearing her father's words, that lovely maiden went there; that wide-eyed woman saw him drinking smoke in the hermitage.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.4.12.24)

tasya dehaṁ samālokya smṛtvā vākyaṁ pitustadā kadalīdalamādāya vījayāmāsa taṁ munim

Beholding his body, and recalling then her father's words, she took up a plantain leaf and began to fan that sage.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.4.12.25)

nirmalaṁ śītalaṁ vāri samānīya suvāsitam pānāya kalpayāmāsa bhaktyā paramayā laghu

Bringing pure, cool, well-scented water, she quickly made it ready for his drinking, with the utmost devotion.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.4.12.26)

chāyāṁ vastrātapatreṇa bhāskare madhyage sati racayāmāsa tanvaṅgī svayaṁ dharme sthitā satī

When the sun stood at midday, that slender, virtuous woman, herself established in dharma, made a shade for him with a cloth parasol.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.4.12.27)

phalānyānīya divyāni pakvāni madhurāṇi ca mumocāgre munestasya bhakṣārthaṁ vihitāni ca

Bringing divine fruits, ripe and sweet, she set them before that sage, prepared for his eating.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.4.12.28)

kuśāḥ prādeśamātrā hi haritāḥ śukasannibhāḥ dadhārāgre'tha puṣpāṇi nityakarmasamṛddhaye

She laid before him kusha grass, a span in length, green and parrot-hued, and flowers too, for the fulfillment of his daily rites.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.4.12.29)

nidrārthaṁ kalpayāmāsa saṁstaraṁ pallavānvitam tasminmunau cādarasthā cakāra vyajanaṁ śanaiḥ

For his sleep she prepared a bed spread with soft leaves; and, remaining attentive toward that sage, she gently fanned him.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.4.12.30)

hāvabhāvādikaṁ kiñcidvikārajananaṁ ca tat na cakāra jayantī sā śāpabhītā munestadā

No coquettish gesture at all, nor anything that might stir agitation, did Jayanti perform then, fearing the sage's curse.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.4.12.31)

stutiṁ cakāra tanvaṅgī gīrbhistasya mahātmanaḥ subhāṣiṇyanukūlābhiḥ prītikartrībhirapyuta

That slender-bodied, well-spoken woman kept praising that great soul with words agreeable and productive of delight.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.4.12.32)

prabuddhe jalamādāya dadhārācamanāya ca mano'nukūlaṁ satataṁ kurvantī vyacarattadā

When he awoke, she would bring water and hold it ready for his rinsing; ever pleasing his mind in this way, she carried on her service.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.4.12.33)

indro'pi sevakāṁstatra preṣayāmāsa cāturaḥ pravṛttiṁ jñātukāmo vai munestasya jitātmanaḥ

Indra, too, cleverly sent servants there, desiring to learn news of that self-controlled sage.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.4.12.34)

evaṁ bahūni varṣāṇi paricaryāparābhavat nirvikārā jitakrodhā brahmacaryaparā satī

Thus for many years she remained devoted to service, undisturbed, her anger conquered, that virtuous woman devoted to celibacy.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.4.12.35)

pūrṇe varṣasahasre tu parituṣṭo maheśvaraḥ vareṇa chandayāmāsa kāvyaṁ prītamanā haraḥ

When a full thousand years had passed, Maheshvara, greatly pleased and content of mind, offered Kavya a boon.

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.4.12.36)

īśvara uvāca yacca kiñcidapi brahmanvidyate bhṛgunandana pratipaśyasi yatsarvaṁ yacca vācyaṁ na kasyacit

Ishvara said: O brahmin, son of Bhrigu, whatever exists at all, you shall come to perceive it all — even that which cannot be spoken by anyone.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.4.12.37)

sarvābhibhāvakatvena bhaviṣyasi na saṁśayaḥ avadhyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ prajeśaśca dvijottamaḥ

You shall become one who overpowers all — of this there is no doubt. You shall be unslayable by every being, and, O best of brahmins, a lord of creatures too.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.4.12.38)

vyāsa uvāca evaṁ dattvā varāñchambhustatraivāntaradhīyata kāvyastāmatha saṁvīkṣya jayantīṁ vākyamabravīt

Vyasa said: Having thus granted these boons, Shambhu vanished right there. Kavya, then beholding Jayanti, spoke these words —

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.4.12.39)

kāsi kasyāsi suśroṇi brūhi kiṁ te cikīrṣitam kimarthamiha samprāptā kāryaṁ vada varoru me

Who are you, whose daughter are you, O fair one? Tell me, what is your intention? For what purpose have you come here? Tell me your business.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.4.12.40)

kiṁ vāñchasi karomyadya duṣkaraṁ cetsulocane prīto'smi tvatkṛtenādya varaṁ varaya suvrate

What do you desire? I shall grant it today, even if it is difficult, O fair-eyed one. I am pleased today by your service — choose a boon, O keeper of good vows.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.4.12.41)

tataḥ sā tu muniṁ prāha jayantī muditānanā cikīrṣitaṁ me bhagavaṁstapasā jñātumarhasi

Then Jayanti, her face full of joy, said to the sage: O illustrious one, you ought to know my intention through your own power of austerity.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.4.12.42)

śukra uvāca jñātaṁ mayā tathāpi tvaṁ brūhi yanmanasepsitam karomi sarvathā bhadraṁ prīto'smi paricaryayā

Shukra said: I do know it; yet tell me what your heart desires. I shall grant it in every way — good fortune to you; I am pleased with your service.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.4.12.43)

jayantyuvāca śakrasyāhaṁ sutā brahman pitrā tubhyaṁ samarpitā jayantī nāmataścāhaṁ jayantāvarajā mune

Jayanti said: O brahmin, I am the daughter of Indra, given by my father to you. My name is Jayanti, and I am the younger sister of Jayanta, O sage.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.4.12.44)

sakāmāsmi tvayi vibho vāñchitaṁ kuru me'dhunā raṁsye tvayā mahābhāga dharmataḥ prītipūrvakam

O mighty one, I desire you — grant my wish now. O glorious one, I shall unite with you lawfully and with love.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.4.12.45)

śukra uvāca mayā saha tvaṁ suśroṇi daśavarṣāṇi bhāmini sarvairbhūtairadṛśyā ca ramasveha yadṛcchayā

Shukra said: With me, O radiant one, for ten years, invisible to all beings, sport here freely as you wish.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.4.12.46)

vyāsa uvāca evamuktvā gṛhaṁ gatvā jayantyāḥ pāṇimudvahan tayā sahāvasaddevyā daśavarṣāṇi bhārgavaḥ

Vyasa said: Having said this, going to his home and taking Jayanti's hand in marriage, the descendant of Bhrigu dwelt with that goddess-like woman for ten years.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.4.12.47)

adṛśyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ māyayā saṁvṛtaḥ prabhuḥ daityāstamāgataṁ śrutvā kṛtārthaṁ mantrasaṁyutam

That lord, enveloped by maya, remained invisible to all beings. The daityas, hearing that he had returned, successful and equipped with the mantras,

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.4.12.48)

abhijagmurgṛhe tasya muditāste didṛkṣavaḥ nāpaśyan ramamāṇaṁ te jayantyā saha saṁyutam

came, joyful, eager to see him, to his home. But, engaged with Jayanti in his sport, they could not see him at all.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.4.12.49)

tadā vimanasaḥ sarve jātā bhagnodyamāśca te cintāparātidīnāśca vīkṣamāṇāḥ punaḥ punaḥ

Then all of them became downhearted, their efforts frustrated; absorbed in worry and greatly dejected, they looked about again and again.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.4.12.50)

adṛṣṭvā taṁ tu saṁvṛttaṁ pratijagmuryathāgatam svagṛhāndaityavaryāste cintāviṣṭā bhayāturāḥ

Not seeing him, so concealed, those foremost of daityas, filled with worry and gripped by fear, returned to their own homes as they had come.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.4.12.51)

ramamāṇaṁ tathā jñātvā śakraḥ provāca taṁ gurum bṛhaspatiṁ mahābhāga kiṁ kartavyamitaḥ param

Learning that he was thus engaged in his sport, Indra spoke to his own preceptor Brihaspati: O glorious one, what should now be done?

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.4.12.52)

gacchādya dānavānbrahmanmāyayā tvaṁ pralobhaya asmākaṁ kuru kāryaṁ tvaṁ buddhyā sañcintya mānada

Go today, O brahmin, and tempt the danavas by illusion; do this work of ours, O giver of honor, having deliberated well with your own intelligence.

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.4.12.53)

tacchrutvā vacanaṁ kāvyaṁ ramamāṇaṁ susaṁvṛtam jñātvā tadrūpamāsthāya daityānmati yayau guruḥ

Hearing these words, and knowing that Kavya was engaged in his sport, well concealed, the guru, assuming Kavya's very form, went to bewilder the minds of the daityas.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.4.12.54)

gatvā tatrātibhaktyāsau dānavānsamupāhvayat āgatāste'surāḥ sarve dadṛśuḥ kāvyamagrataḥ

Going there, with the greatest show of devotion, he summoned the danavas; all those asuras came and saw before them one they took for Kavya.

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.4.12.55)

praṇamya saṁsthitāḥ sarve kāvyaṁ matvātimohitāḥ na viduste gurormāyāṁ kāvyarūpavibhāvinīm

Bowing, all of them, taking him for Kavya, stood there entirely deluded; they did not perceive the guru's illusion, so convincingly manifest in Kavya's own form.

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.4.12.56)

tānuvāca guruḥ kāvyarūpaḥ pracchannamāyayā svāgataṁ mama yājyānāṁ prāpto'haṁ vo hitāya vai

The guru, in the form of Kavya, his illusion well concealed, said to them: welcome, my patrons; I have come here indeed for your benefit.

Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.4.12.57)

ahaṁ vo bodhayiṣyāmi vidyāṁ prāptāmamāyayā tapasā toṣitaḥ śambhuryuṣmatkalyāṇahetave

I shall teach you the knowledge I have obtained, without deceit; pleased by my austerity, Shambhu granted it for the sake of your welfare.

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.4.12.58)

tacchrutvā prītamanaso jātāste dānavottamāḥ kṛtakāryaṁ guruṁ matvā jahṛṣuste vimohitāḥ

Hearing this, those best of danavas grew joyful in mind; taking him for their successful guru, they, thoroughly deceived, rejoiced.

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.4.12.59)

praṇemuste mudā yuktā nirātaṅkā gatavyathāḥ devebhyaśca bhayaṁ tyaktvā tasthuḥ sarve nirāmayāḥ

They bowed down, filled with joy, free of dread and distress; and, casting aside their fear of the gods, all of them remained there, untroubled.
