vyāsa uvāca | iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā bhārgavasya mahātmanaḥ | prahlādastu susaṁhṛṣṭo babhūva nṛpanandanaḥ ||

Vyasa said: Having heard these words of the great-souled Bhargava, Prahlada, son of a king, became greatly delighted.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.4.15.2)

jñātvā daivaṁ baliṣṭhañca prahlādastānuvāca ha | kṛte'pi yuddhe na jayo bhaviṣyati kadācana ||

Knowing fate to be all-powerful, Prahlada said to them: "Even if battle is waged, victory shall never come to us."

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.4.15.3)

Then those Danavas, intoxicated with pride and thinking themselves victorious, said: "Battle must indeed be waged — what do we know of fate?"

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.4.15.4)

nirudyamānāṁ daivaṁ hi pradhānamasurādhipa | kena dṛṣṭaṁ kva vā dṛṣṭaṁ kīdṛśaṁ kena nirmitam ||

"For those without effort, fate indeed is paramount, O lord of Asuras — but who has seen it? Where has it been seen? Of what form is it, and by whom was it made?"

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.4.15.5)

tasmādyuddhaṁ kariṣyāmo balamāsthāya sāmpratam | bhavāgre daityavarya tvaṁ sarvajño'si mahāmate ||

"Therefore we shall now wage war, relying upon our strength. O foremost of Daityas, you stand before us; you are all-knowing, O great-minded one."

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.4.15.6)

ityuktastaistadā rājan prahlādaḥ prabalārihā | senānīśca tadā bhūtvā devānyuddhe samāhvayat ||

Thus addressed by them, O king, Prahlada, destroyer of powerful foes, then became their commander and challenged the gods to battle.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.4.15.7)

te'pi tatrāsurāndṛṣṭvā saṅgrāme samupasthitān | sarve sambhṛtasambhārā devāstānsamayodhayan ||

They too, seeing the Asuras arrayed there for battle, all the gods, having gathered their forces, engaged them in combat.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.4.15.8)

saṅgrāmastu tadā ghoraḥ śakraprahlādayorabhūt | pūrṇaṁ varṣaśataṁ tatra munīnāṁ vismayāvahaḥ ||

Then a terrible battle took place between Shakra and Prahlada — lasting a full hundred years there, astonishing even to the sages.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.4.15.9)

vartamāne mahāyuddhe śukreṇa pratipālitāḥ | jayamāpustadā daityāḥ prahlādapramukhā nṛpa ||

While that great war was in progress, the Daityas, led by Prahlada and protected by Shukra, O king, obtained victory.

tadaivendro gurorvākyātsarvaduḥkhavināśinīm | sasmāra manasā devīṁ muktidāṁ paramāṁ śivām ||

Then Indra, at the word of his Guru, mindfully remembered the Devi, destroyer of all sorrow, supreme giver of liberation, the auspicious one.

Indra said: "Victory to you, O Devi, great Maya, wielder of the trident, O Ambika, holding the conch, discus, mace, lotus, and sword in your hands, granter of fearlessness!"

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.4.15.12)

"O you who dwell within the five sheaths, embodiment of the crowning Brahman; O Mother, bud of bliss, worshipped by all the Upanishads."

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.4.15.15)

"O Mother, be gracious, be of fair countenance; protect us, deprived of strength, O Mother — us who have been vanquished by the Daityas. You alone, O Devi, are the giver of refuge in this world, the true standard, and are able to remove sorrow, being endowed with all power."

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.4.15.16)

"O Devi, mother of the universe, of celebrated glory, arisen for the sake of protection, remover of affliction, of great valor — you, in the form of Time, are indeed able even to destroy all this. Who, O Mother, being of dull intellect, can truly know your ways?"

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.4.15.18)

"Blessed indeed are those great ones devoted to you, free from the sorrow of samsara, immersed in the ocean of bliss; but those devoid of devotion, O Uma, never cross the ocean of sorrow with its waves of birth and death."

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.4.15.20)
