Skandha 4 · Chapter 3

Diti's Curse upon Aditi

Chapter 2All chaptersChapter 4

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.4.3.1)

vyāsa uvāca kāraṇāni bahūnyatrāpyavatāre hareḥ kila sarveṣāṁ caiva devānāmaṁśāvataraṇeṣvapi

Vyasa said: There are, indeed, many causes here for Hari's incarnation, and likewise for the partial descents of all the gods.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.4.3.2)

vasudevāvatārasya kāraṇaṁ śṛṇu tattvataḥ devakyāścaiva rohiṇyā avatārasya kāraṇam

Hear truly the cause of Vasudeva's incarnation, and the cause of the incarnation of Devaki and Rohini as well.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.4.3.3)

ekadā kaśyapaḥ śrīmānyajñārthaṁ dhenumāharat yācito'yaṁ bahuvidhaṁ na dadau dhenumuttamām

Once the glorious Kashyapa took away a cow for a sacrifice. Though begged for it in many ways, he did not return that excellent cow.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.4.3.4)

varuṇastu tato gatvā brahmāṇaṁ jagataḥ prabhum praṇamyovāca dīnātmā svaduḥkhaṁ vinayānvitaḥ

Then Varuna, going to Brahma, lord of the world, bowed down and, humble and distressed, spoke of his own sorrow with due respect.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.4.3.5)

kiṁ karomi mahābhāga matto'sau na dadāti gām śāpo mayā visṛṣṭo'smai gopālo bhava mānuṣe

"What shall I do, O glorious one — he does not give me back my cow. I have already released a curse upon him: become a cowherd among men!

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.4.3.6)

bhārye dve api tatraiva bhavetāṁ cātiduḥkhite yato vatsā rudantyatra mātṛhīnāḥ suduḥkhitāḥ

And let both his wives also become, there, greatly afflicted with sorrow — since here, motherless calves cry out in deep distress.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.4.3.7)

mṛtavatsāditistasmādbhaviṣyati dharātale kārāgāranivāsā ca tenāpi bahuduḥkhitā

Therefore Aditi shall become, on this earth, one whose children die at birth; and through that also she shall dwell in a prison, greatly afflicted."

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.4.3.8)

vyāsa uvāca tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya yādonāthasya padmabhūḥ samāhūya muniṁ tatra tamuvāca prajāpatiḥ

Vyasa said: Hearing these words of the lord of the waters, the lotus-born Prajapati Brahma summoned that sage there and spoke to him.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.4.3.9)

kasmāttvayā mahābhāga lokapālasya dhenavaḥ hṛtāḥ punarna dattāśca kimanyāyaṁ karoṣi ca

"Why, O glorious one, have you taken away the cows of this guardian of the world, and not returned them? Why do you act unjustly?

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.4.3.10)

jānan nyāyaṁ mahābhāga paravittāpahāraṇam kṛtavānkathamanyāyaṁ sarvajño'si mahāmate

Knowing what is just, O glorious one — knowing that seizing another's property is wrong — how have you committed this injustice? You are all-knowing, O sage of great wisdom.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.4.3.11)

aho lobhasya mahimā mahato'pi na muñcati lobhaṁ narakadaṁ nūnaṁ pāpākaramasammatam

Ah, such is the power of greed — it does not release even great souls. Greed, verily, is a giver of hell, a mine of sin, wholly unworthy of approval.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.4.3.12)

kaśyapo'pi na taṁ tyaktuṁ samarthaḥ kiṁ karomyaham sarvadaivādhikastasmāllobho vai kalito mayā

Even Kashyapa is not able to abandon it — what shall I do? Thus greed, indeed, has always overpowered even me — this I too have come to understand.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.4.3.13)

dhanyāste munayaḥ śāntā jito yairlobha eva ca vaikhānasaiḥ śamaparaiḥ pratigrahaparāṅmukhaiḥ

Blessed are those peaceful sages, forest ascetics devoted to tranquility, averse to accepting gifts, by whom greed alone has truly been conquered.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.4.3.14)

saṁsāre balavāñchatrurlobho'medhyo'varaḥ sadā kaśyapo'pi durācāraḥ kṛtasneho durātmanā

In this world, greed is a powerful, impure, and ever-base enemy. Even Kashyapa, through evil-minded attachment, fell into wrongful conduct.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.4.3.15)

brahmāpi taṁ śaśāpātha kaśyapaṁ munisattamam maryādārakṣaṇārthaṁ hi pautraṁ paramavallabham

Then Brahma too, for the sake of upholding the boundary of right conduct, cursed Kashyapa, that best of sages — even his own most beloved grandson.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.4.3.16)

aṁśena tvaṁ pṛthivyāṁ vai prāpya janma yadoḥ kule bhāryābhyāṁ saṁyutastatra gopālatvaṁ kariṣyasi

"You, by a portion of yourself, having taken birth on this earth in the lineage of Yadu, shall there become a cowherd, together with your two wives."

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.4.3.17)

Vyasa said: Thus Kashyapa was cursed by both Varuna and Brahma — cursed for the purpose of a partial incarnation and for the removal of the earth's burden.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.4.3.18)

tathā dityāditiḥ śaptā śokasantaptayā bhṛśam jātā jātā vinaśyeraṁstava putrāstu sapta vai

And likewise Aditi was cursed by Diti, who was greatly consumed with grief: your sons, as soon as they are born, one after another, shall perish — seven of them, indeed.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.4.3.19)

janamejaya uvāca kasmāddityā ca bhaginī śaptendrajananī mune kāraṇaṁ vada śāpe ca śokastu munisattama

Janamejaya said: Why, O sage, did Diti curse her own sister, the mother of Indra? Tell me the reason for that curse and that grief, O best of sages.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.4.3.20)

sūta uvāca pārīkṣitena pṛṣṭastu vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ rājānaṁ pratyuvācedaṁ kāraṇaṁ susamāhitaḥ

Suta said: Thus questioned by the son of Parikshit, Vyasa, son of Satyavati, with a composed mind, related this cause to the king.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.4.3.21)

vyāsa uvāca rājan dakṣasute dve tu ditiścāditiruttame kaśyapasya priye bhārye babhūvatururukrame

Vyasa said: O king, Diti and Aditi were two excellent daughters of Daksha, and became the beloved wives of Kashyapa, the wide-strider.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.4.3.22)

adityāṁ maghavā putro yadābhūdativīryavān tadā tu tādṛśaṁ putraṁ cakame ditirojasā

When Indra, a son of exceeding valor, was born to Aditi, then Diti too, with fierce longing, desired a son just like him.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.4.3.23)

patimāhāsitāpāṅgī putraṁ me dehi mānada indrakhyabalaṁ vīraṁ dharmiṣṭhaṁ vīryavattamam

The dark-eyed one said to her husband: O giver of honor, grant me a son — a hero equal in strength to Indra, righteous, most valorous.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.4.3.24)

tāmuvāca muniḥ kānte svasthā bhava mayodite vratānte bhavitā tubhyaṁ śatakratusamaḥ sutaḥ

The sage said to her: Be at peace, beloved, as I direct you. At the end of a vow, you shall have a son equal to Shatakratu, Indra.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.4.3.25)

sā tatheti pratiśrutya cakāra vratamuttamam niṣiktaṁ muninā garbhaṁ bibhrāṇā sumanoharam

She, saying "so be it," accepted this and undertook the excellent vow, bearing the lovely embryo placed within her by the sage.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.4.3.26)

bhūmau cakāra śayanaṁ payovrataparāyaṇā pavitrā dhāraṇāyuktā babhūva varavarṇinī

Devoted to the milk-vow, she took to sleeping upon the bare ground; pure and steadfast in her observance, that beautiful woman remained so.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.4.3.27)

evaṁ jātaḥ susampūrṇo yadā garbho'tivīryavān śubhrāṁśumatidīptāṅgīṁ ditiṁ dṛṣṭvā tu duḥkhitā

Thus, when the embryo of exceeding vigor had become fully formed, seeing Diti radiant-bodied as the bright moon, Aditi grew distressed —

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.4.3.28)

maghavatsadṛśaḥ putro bhaviṣyati mahābalaḥ dityāstadā mama sutastejohīno bhavetkila

thinking: a son equal to Indra, of great strength, will be born to Diti — then surely my own son's splendor will grow dim.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.4.3.29)

iti cintāparā putramindraṁ covāca māninī śatruste'dya samutpanno ditigarbhe'tivīryavān

So, absorbed in anxiety, the proud goddess said to her son Indra: a rival of exceeding might has now arisen for you, this very day, in Diti's womb.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.4.3.30)

upāyaṁ kuru nāśāya śatroradya vicintya ca utpattireva hantavyā dityā garbhasya śobhana

O splendid one, devise well this very day a plan for that enemy's destruction — Diti's very embryo must be destroyed before its birth.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.4.3.31)

vīkṣya tāmasitāpāṅgīṁ sapatnībhāvamāsthitām dunoti hṛdaye cintā sukhamarmavināśinī

Seeing that dark-eyed rival established in her co-wifely rivalry, an anxiety that destroys the very core of happiness torments my heart.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.4.3.32)

rājayakṣmeva saṁvṛddho naṣṭo naiva bhavedripuḥ tasmādaṅkuritaṁ hanyādbuddhimānahitaṁ kila

Like consumption once it has grown strong, an enemy once grown cannot be destroyed. Therefore the wise should destroy what is harmful while it is still a mere sprout.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.4.3.33)

lohaśaṅkuriva kṣipto garbho vai hṛdaye mama yena kenāpyupāyena pātayādya śatakrato

That embryo sits in my heart like an iron spike thrust in. By whatever means, O Shatakratu, destroy it this very day.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.4.3.34)

sāmadānabalenāpi hiṁsanīyastvayā sutaḥ dityā garbho mahābhāga mama cedicchasi priyam

By conciliation, gift, or force — O glorious one — Diti's unborn son must be slain by you, if you wish my good."

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.4.3.35)

vyāsa uvāca śrutvā mātṛvacaḥ śakro vicintya manasā tataḥ jagāmāparamātuḥ sa samīpamamarādhipaḥ

Vyasa said: Having heard his mother's words, and reflecting within his mind, Shakra, lord of the immortals, then went near his other mother, Diti.

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.4.3.36)

vavande vinayātpādau dityāḥ pāpamatirnṛpa provāca vinayenāsau madhuraṁ viṣagarbhitam

With sinful intent, O king, he humbly bowed to Diti's feet, and spoke to her with courtesy — sweet words concealing poison within.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.4.3.37)

indra uvāca mātastvaṁ vratayuktāsi kṣīṇadehātidurbalā sevārthamiha samprāptaḥ kiṁ kartavyaṁ vadasva me

Indra said: Mother, you are engaged in a vow, your body wasted and very weak. I have come here to serve you — tell me, what shall I do for you?

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.4.3.38)

pādasaṁvāhanaṁ te'haṁ kariṣyāmi pativrate guruśuśrūṣaṇātpuṇyaṁ labhate gatimakṣayām

I shall massage your feet, O faithful wife — by serving one's elders, one obtains merit and an imperishable destiny.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.4.3.39)

na me kimapi bhedo'sti tathādityā śape kila ityuktvā caraṇau spṛṣṭā saṁvāhanaparo'bhavat

I hold no difference at all between you and Aditi — this I swear." Saying so, he touched her feet and began to massage them.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.4.3.40)

saṁvāhanasukhaṁ prāpya nidrāmāpa sulocanā śrāntā vratakṛśā suptā viśvastā paramā satī

Obtaining the comfort of that massage, the fair-eyed Diti fell asleep — weary and emaciated by her vow, that most virtuous woman slept trustingly.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.4.3.41)

tāṁ nidrāvaśamāpannāṁ vilokya prāviśattanum rūpaṁ kṛtvātisūkṣmañca śastrapāṇiḥ samāhitaḥ

Seeing her overcome by sleep, he, weapon in hand and composed of mind, took on an extremely subtle form and entered her body.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.4.3.42)

udaraṁ praviveśāśu tasyā yogabalena vai garbhaṁ cakarta vajreṇa saptadhā pavināyakaḥ

By the power of yoga he quickly entered her womb, and the wielder of the thunderbolt cut the embryo into seven pieces with his vajra.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.4.3.43)

ruroda ca tadā bālo vajreṇābhihatastathā mā rudeti śanairvākyamuvāca maghavānamum

Then the child, struck by the vajra, wept; and Maghava softly said to him, do not cry.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.4.3.44)

śakalāni punaḥ sapta saptadhā kartitāni ca tadā caikonapañcāśanmarutaścābhavannṛpa

Then those seven pieces were again each cut into seven, and so, O king, there came to be the forty-nine Maruts.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.4.3.45)

tadā prabuddhā sudatī jñātvā garbhaṁ tathākṛtam indreṇa chalarūpeṇa cukopa bhṛśaduḥkhitā

Then the fair-toothed Diti awoke, and, learning that her embryo had been thus mutilated by Indra in his deceptive form, became greatly enraged and grief-stricken.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.4.3.46)

bhaginīkṛtaṁ tu sā buddhvā śaśāpa kupitā tadā aditiṁ maghavantañca satyavrataparāyaṇā

Understanding that this was her own sister's doing, she, devoted to truth-vows, angrily cursed both Aditi and Indra —

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.4.3.47)

yathā me kartito garbhastava putreṇa chadmanā tathā tannāśamāyātu rājyaṁ tribhuvanasya tu

As my embryo has been cut apart by your son through deceit, so may his very kingdom of the three worlds come to ruin.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.4.3.48)

yathā guptena pāpena mama garbho nipātitaḥ adityā pāpacāriṇyā yathā me ghātitaḥ sutaḥ

As, through hidden sin, my embryo was struck down; as, by the wickedly-acting Aditi, my son was slain —

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.4.3.49)

tasyāḥ putrāstu naśyantu jātā jātāḥ punaḥ punaḥ kārāgāre vasatveṣā putraśokāturā bhṛśam

so may her sons, likewise, perish one after another as soon as they are born; and may she dwell in a prison, greatly tormented by grief for her sons.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.4.3.50)

anyajanmani cāpyeva mṛtāpatyā bhaviṣyati vyāsa uvāca ityutsṛṣṭaṁ tadā śrutvā śāpaṁ marīcinandanaḥ

And in another birth too she shall become one whose children die." Vyasa said: Hearing that curse then pronounced, the son of Marichi —

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.4.3.51)

uvāca praṇayopeto vacanaṁ śamayanniva mā kopaṁ kuru kalyāṇi putrāste balavattarāḥ

spoke tenderly, as if to pacify her: Do not be angry, blessed one; your sons shall be exceedingly powerful.

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.4.3.52)

bhaviṣyanti surāḥ sarve maruto maghavatsakhāḥ śāpo'yaṁ tava vāmoru tvaṣṭāviṁśe'tha dvāpare

All of them shall become gods, the Maruts, companions of Indra. As for this curse of yours, O fair-thighed one, in the twenty-eighth Dvapara age —

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.4.3.53)

aṁśena mānuṣaṁ janma prāpya bhokṣyati bhāminī varuṇenāpi datto'sti śāpaḥ santāpitena ca

that lady, taking a human birth through a portion of herself, shall bear its effect. A curse has also been given by the anguished Varuna —

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.4.3.54)

ubhayoḥ śāpayogena mānuṣīyaṁ bhaviṣyati vyāsa uvāca patināśvāsitā devī santuṣṭā sābhavattadā

and through the combination of these two curses shall this human birth come about." Vyasa said: Reassured thus by her husband, the goddess Diti then became content.

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.4.3.55)

novāca vipriyaṁ kiñcittataḥ sā varavarṇinī iti te kathitaṁ rājan pūrvaśāpasya kāraṇam

That fair one said nothing more unpleasant thereafter. Thus, O king, has the cause of the former curse been related to you.

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.4.3.56)

aditirdevakī jātā svāṁśena nṛpasattama

Aditi, through a portion of herself, was born as Devaki, O best of kings.
