vyāsa uvāca | parājitāḥ surāḥ sarve rājyaṁ śumbhaḥ śaśāsa ha | evaṁ varṣasahasraṁ tu jagāma nṛpasattama
Vyasa said: All the gods having been defeated, Shumbha ruled the kingdom; and thus a thousand years passed, O best of kings.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.5.22.2)
भ्रष्टराज्यास्ततो देवाश्चिन्तामापुः सुदुस्तराम् । गुरुं दुःखातुरास्ते तु पप्रच्छुरिदमादृताः
bhraṣṭarājyāstato devāścintāmāpuḥ sudustarām | guruṁ duḥkhāturāste tu papracchuridamādṛtāḥ
Then the gods, fallen from their kingdom, fell into an anxiety hard to overcome; tormented by sorrow, they respectfully asked their guru this:
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.5.22.3)
किं कर्तव्यं गुरो ब्रूहि सर्वज्ञस्त्वं महामुनिः । उपायोऽस्ति महाभाग दुःखस्य विनिवृत्तये
kiṁ kartavyaṁ guro brūhi sarvajñastvaṁ mahāmuniḥ | upāyo'sti mahābhāga duḥkhasya vinivṛttaye
"What is to be done, O guru? Tell us — you are the all-knowing great sage. Is there any means, O most fortunate one, for the removal of our sorrow?"
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.5.22.4)

upacāraparā nūnaṁ vedamantrāḥ sahasraśaḥ | vācchitārthakarā nūnaṁ sūtraiḥ saṁlakṣitāḥ kila
"There are surely thousands of Vedic mantras, given to efficacious rites; they surely accomplish desired ends, as marked out in the ritual sutras, indeed."

bṛhaspatiruvāca | sarve mantrāśca vedoktā daivādhīnaphalāśca te | na svatantrāḥ surādhīśa tathaikāntaphalapradāḥ
Brihaspati said: "All the mantras declared in the Veda have their fruit dependent upon fate; they are not independent, O lord of the gods, nor do they invariably bestow their fruit with certainty."
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.5.22.9)
मन्त्राणां देवता यूयं ते तु दुःखैकभाजनम् । जाताः स्म कालयोगेन किं करोमि प्रसाधनम्
mantrāṇāṁ devatā yūyaṁ te tu duḥkhaikabhājanam | jātāḥ sma kālayogena kiṁ karomi prasādhanam
