The Sending of Dhumralochana as Messenger to the Goddess
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.5.24.1)
व्यास उवाच । देव्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा स दूतः प्राह विस्मितः । किं ब्रूषे रुचिरापाङ्गि स्त्रीस्वभावाद्धि साहसात्
vyāsa uvāca | devyāstadvacanaṁ śrutvā sa dūtaḥ prāha vismitaḥ | kiṁ brūṣe rucirāpāṅgi strīsvabhāvāddhi sāhasāt
Vyasa said: Hearing the Goddess's words, the messenger, astonished, said: "What is this you say, O lovely-eyed one, out of mere womanly rashness?"
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.5.24.2)
इन्द्राद्या निर्जिता येन देवा दैत्यास्तथापरे । तं कथं समरे देवि जेतुमिच्छसि भामिनि
indrādyā nirjitā yena devā daityāstathāpare | taṁ kathaṁ samare devi jetumicchasi bhāmini
"He by whom Indra and the other gods, and likewise other daityas, have been conquered — how, O Goddess, O lovely one, do you wish to conquer him in battle?"
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.5.24.3)
त्रैलोक्ये तादृशो नास्ति यः शुम्भं समरे जयेत् । का त्वं कमलपत्राक्षि तस्याग्रे युधि साम्प्रतम्
trailokye tādṛśo nāsti yaḥ śumbhaṁ samare jayet | kā tvaṁ kamalapatrākṣi tasyāgre yudhi sāmpratam
"In the three worlds there exists no one who could conquer Shumbha in battle. Who then are you, O lotus-petal-eyed one, to stand before him now in combat?"
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.5.24.4)
अविचार्य न वक्तव्यं वचनं चापि सुन्दरि । बलं स्वपरयोर्ज्ञात्वा वक्तव्यं समयोचितम्
avicārya na vaktavyaṁ vacanaṁ cāpi sundari | balaṁ svaparayorjñātvā vaktavyaṁ samayocitam
"One should not speak words without due reflection, O beautiful one; knowing the strength of oneself and of the other, one should speak only what suits the occasion."
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.5.24.5)
त्रैलोक्याधिपतिः शुम्भस्तव रूपेण मोहितः । त्वाञ्च प्रार्थयते राजा कुरु तस्येप्सितं प्रिये
trailokyādhipatiḥ śumbhastava rūpeṇa mohitaḥ | tvāñca prārthayate rājā kuru tasyepsitaṁ priye
"Shumbha, the lord of the three worlds, is bewitched by your beauty, and that king desires you; fulfil his wish, O beloved."
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.5.24.6)
त्यक्त्वा मूर्खस्वभावं त्वं सम्मान्य वचनं मम । भज शुम्भं निशुम्भं वा हितमेतद् ब्रवीमि ते
tyaktvā mūrkhasvabhāvaṁ tvaṁ sammānya vacanaṁ mama | bhaja śumbhaṁ niśumbhaṁ vā hitametad bravīmi te
"Abandoning this foolish disposition, honoring my words, accept either Shumbha or Nishumbha — this is the beneficial counsel I give you."
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.5.24.7)
शृङ्गारः सर्वथा सर्वैः प्राणिभिः परया मुदा । सेवनीयो बुद्धिमद्भिर्नवानामुत्तमो यतः
śṛṅgāraḥ sarvathā sarvaiḥ prāṇibhiḥ parayā mudā | sevanīyo buddhimadbhirnavānāmuttamo yataḥ
"The erotic sentiment is, in every way, to be enjoyed by all beings with the greatest delight; it is to be cultivated by the wise, since it is the foremost among the nine sentiments."
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.5.24.8)
नागमिष्यसि चेद् बाले सङ्क्रुद्धः पृथिवीपतिः । अन्यानाज्ञाकरान्प्रेष्य बलान्नेष्यति साम्प्रतम्
nāgamiṣyasi ced bāle saṅkruddhaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ | anyānājñākarānpreṣya balānneṣyati sāmpratam
"If you do not come, O young girl, the enraged lord of the earth will send other servants under his command, and forcibly bring you here at once."
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.5.24.9)
केशेष्वाकृष्य ते नूनं दानवा बलदर्पिताः । त्वां नयिष्यन्ति वामोरु तरसा शुम्भसन्तिधौ
keśeṣvākṛṣya te nūnaṁ dānavā baladarpitāḥ | tvāṁ nayiṣyanti vāmoru tarasā śumbhasantidhau
"The danavas, swollen with pride in their strength, will surely drag you by the hair, O fair-thighed one, and bring you swiftly into Shumbha's presence."
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.5.24.10)
स्वलज्जां रक्ष तन्वङ्गि साहसं सर्वथा त्यज । मानिता गच्छ तत्पार्श्वे मानपात्रं यतोऽसि वै
svalajjāṁ rakṣa tanvaṅgi sāhasaṁ sarvathā tyaja | mānitā gaccha tatpārśve mānapātraṁ yato'si vai
"Protect your own modesty, O slender one; abandon this rashness altogether. Go to his side with honor, since you are indeed worthy of honor."
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.5.24.11)
क्व युद्धं निशितैर्बाणैः क्व सुखं रतिसङ्गजम् । सारासारं परिच्छेद्य कुरु मे वचनं पटु
kva yuddhaṁ niśitairbāṇaiḥ kva sukhaṁ ratisaṅgajam | sārāsāraṁ paricchedya kuru me vacanaṁ paṭu
"Where is battle with sharp arrows, and where is the happiness born of the union of love? Distinguishing what is essential from what is not, heed my clever counsel."
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.5.24.12)
भज शुम्भं निशुम्भं वा लब्धासि परमं सुखम् । देव्युवाच । सत्यं दूत महाभाग प्रवक्तुं निपुणो ह्यसि
bhaja śumbhaṁ niśumbhaṁ vā labdhāsi paramaṁ sukham | devyuvāca | satyaṁ dūta mahābhāga pravaktuṁ nipuṇo hyasi
"Accept Shumbha or Nishumbha, and you shall obtain the highest happiness." The Goddess said: "True indeed, O messenger, most fortunate one — you are skilled at speaking."
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.5.24.13)
निशुम्भशुम्भौ जानामि बलवन्ताविति ध्रुवम् । प्रतिज्ञा मे कृता बाल्यादन्यथा सा कथं भवेत्
niśumbhaśumbhau jānāmi balavantāviti dhruvam | pratijñā me kṛtā bālyādanyathā sā kathaṁ bhavet
"I know for certain that Nishumbha and Shumbha are both powerful. But a vow was made by me in childhood — how could it now be otherwise?"
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.5.24.14)
तस्माद् ब्रूहि निशुम्भञ्च शुम्भं वा बलवत्तरम् । विना युद्धं न मे भर्ता भविता कोऽपि सौष्ठवात्
tasmād brūhi niśumbhañca śumbhaṁ vā balavattaram | vinā yuddhaṁ na me bhartā bhavitā ko'pi sauṣṭhavāt
"Therefore tell Nishumbha, or whichever of the two is more powerful, Shumbha — without battle, no one at all shall become my husband, by proper conduct."
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.5.24.15)
जित्वा मां तरसा कामं करं गृह्णातु साम्प्रतम् । युद्धेच्छया समायातां विद्धि मामबलां नृप
jitvā māṁ tarasā kāmaṁ karaṁ gṛhṇātu sāmpratam | yuddhecchayā samāyātāṁ viddhi māmabalāṁ nṛpa
"Let him swiftly conquer me, and then take my hand at once, as he wishes. Know me, O king, to have come here desiring battle, though I am but a weak woman."
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.5.24.16)
युद्धं देहि समर्थोऽसि वीरधर्मं समाचर । बिभेषि मम शूलाच्चेत्पातालं गच्छ मा चिरम्
yuddhaṁ dehi samartho'si vīradharmaṁ samācara | bibheṣi mama śūlāccetpātālaṁ gaccha mā ciram
"Give battle, if you are capable; practice the duty of a hero. If you fear my trident, then go to Patala without delay —"
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.5.24.17)
त्रिदिवं च धरां त्यक्त्वा जीवितेच्छा यदस्ति ते । इति दूत वदाशु त्वं गत्वा स्वपतिमादरात्
tridivaṁ ca dharāṁ tyaktvā jīvitecchā yadasti te | iti dūta vadāśu tvaṁ gatvā svapatimādarāt
"— abandoning heaven and earth as well, if you have any wish to live. So, O messenger, go quickly and tell your lord this, with due respect."
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.5.24.18)
स विचार्य यथायुक्तं करिष्यति महाबलः । संसारे दूतधर्मोऽयं यत्सत्यं भाषणं किल
sa vicārya yathāyuktaṁ kariṣyati mahābalaḥ | saṁsāre dūtadharmo'yaṁ yatsatyaṁ bhāṣaṇaṁ kila
"Let that mighty one deliberate and act as is fitting. This indeed is the duty of a messenger in this world — to speak the truth."
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.5.24.19)
शत्रौ पत्यौ च धर्मज्ञ तथा त्वं कुरु मा चिरम् । व्यास उवाच । अथ तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा नीतिमद्बलसंयुतम्
śatrau patyau ca dharmajña tathā tvaṁ kuru mā ciram | vyāsa uvāca | atha tadvacanaṁ śrutvā nītimadbalasaṁyutam
"Whether toward an enemy or toward a husband, O knower of dharma, act likewise, without delay." Vyasa said: Then, hearing her words, full of wise reasoning and force,
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.5.24.20)
हेतुयुक्तं प्रगल्पञ्च विस्मितः प्रययौ तदा । गत्वा दैत्यपतिं दूतो विचार्य च पुनः पुनः
hetuyuktaṁ pragalpañca vismitaḥ prayayau tadā | gatvā daityapatiṁ dūto vicārya ca punaḥ punaḥ
grounded in reason and boldly spoken, he, astonished, set forth; and going to the lord of the daityas, the messenger, having pondered it again and again,
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.5.24.21)
प्रणम्य पादयोः प्रह्वः प्रत्युवाच नृपञ्ज तम् । राजनीतिकरं वाक्यं मृदुपूर्वं प्रियं वचः
praṇamya pādayoḥ prahvaḥ pratyuvāca nṛpañja tam | rājanītikaraṁ vākyaṁ mṛdupūrvaṁ priyaṁ vacaḥ
bowing low at his feet, spoke in reply to that king a speech befitting statecraft, gentle at first, in pleasant words.
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.5.24.22)
दूत उवाच । सत्यं प्रियं च वक्तव्यं तेन चिन्तापरो ह्यहम् । सत्यं प्रियं च राजेन्द्र वचनं दुर्लभं किल
dūta uvāca | satyaṁ priyaṁ ca vaktavyaṁ tena cintāparo hyaham | satyaṁ priyaṁ ca rājendra vacanaṁ durlabhaṁ kila
The messenger said: "I must speak both the truth and what is pleasant, and so I am filled with anxiety over this; for, O lord of kings, words that are both true and pleasant are indeed hard to find."
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.5.24.23)
अप्रियं वदतां कामं राजा कुप्यति सर्वथा । साक्षात्कुतः समायाता कस्य वा किम्बलाबला
apriyaṁ vadatāṁ kāmaṁ rājā kupyati sarvathā | sākṣātkutaḥ samāyātā kasya vā kimbalābalā
"Kings are, in every case, apt to grow angry at those who speak what is unpleasant. From where has she truly come, and whose daughter is she, and of what strength or weakness?"
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.5.24.24)
न ज्ञानगोचरं किञ्चित्किं ब्रवीमि विचेष्टितम् । युद्धकामा मया दृष्टा गर्विता कटुभाषिणी
na jñānagocaraṁ kiñcitkiṁ bravīmi viceṣṭitam | yuddhakāmā mayā dṛṣṭā garvitā kaṭubhāṣiṇī
"None of this lies within my knowledge — what account of her conduct shall I give? I saw her desirous of battle, proud, and sharp of speech."
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.5.24.25)
तया यत्कथितं सम्यक् तच्छृणुष्व महामते । मया बाल्यात्प्रतिज्ञेयं कृता पूर्वं विनोदतः
tayā yatkathitaṁ samyak tacchṛṇuṣva mahāmate | mayā bālyātpratijñeyaṁ kṛtā pūrvaṁ vinodataḥ
"Hear now exactly what she said, O wise one: 'A vow was made by me long ago, in childhood, in mere sport —'"
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.5.24.26)
सखीनां पुरतः कामं विवाहं प्रति सर्वथा । यो मां युद्धे जयेदद्धा दर्पञ्च विधुनोति वै
sakhīnāṁ purataḥ kāmaṁ vivāhaṁ prati sarvathā | yo māṁ yuddhe jayedaddhā darpañca vidhunoti vai
"'— before my friends, entirely concerning my marriage: whoever truly defeats me in battle, and thereby shatters my pride —'"
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.5.24.27)
तं वरिष्याम्यहं कामं पतिं समबलं किल । न मे प्रतिज्ञा मिथ्या सा कर्तव्या नृपसत्तम
taṁ variṣyāmyahaṁ kāmaṁ patiṁ samabalaṁ kila | na me pratijñā mithyā sā kartavyā nṛpasattama
"'— him alone shall I choose as husband, one equal to me in strength. My vow must not be made false, O best of kings.'"
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.5.24.28)
तस्माद्युध्यस्व धर्मज्ञ जित्वा मां स्ववशं कुरु । तयेति व्याहृतं वाक्यं श्रुत्वाहं समुपागतः
tasmādyudhyasva dharmajña jitvā māṁ svavaśaṁ kuru | tayeti vyāhṛtaṁ vākyaṁ śrutvāhaṁ samupāgataḥ
"'Therefore fight, O knower of dharma; conquer me, and make me your own.' Having heard these words spoken by her, I have come here to you."
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.5.24.29)
यथेच्छसि महाराज तथा कुरु तव प्रियम् । सा युद्धार्थं कृतमतिः सायुधा सिंहगामिनी
yathecchasi mahārāja tathā kuru tava priyam | sā yuddhārthaṁ kṛtamatiḥ sāyudhā siṁhagāminī
"As you desire, O great king, so act, for your own good. She stands resolved upon battle, armed, mounted upon her moving lion,"
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.5.24.30)
निश्चला वर्तते भूप यद्योग्यं तद्विधीयताम् । व्यास उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य सुग्रीवस्य नराधिपः
niścalā vartate bhūpa yadyogyaṁ tadvidhīyatām | vyāsa uvāca | ityākarṇya vacastasya sugrīvasya narādhipaḥ
"unwavering, O lord of the earth. Let whatever is proper now be done." Vyasa said: Hearing these words of Sugriva, the lord of men
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.5.24.31)
पप्रच्छ भ्रातरंशूरं समीपस्थं महाबलम् । शुम्भ उवाच । भ्रातः किमत्र कर्तव्यं ब्रूहि सत्यं महामते
papraccha bhrātaraṁśūraṁ samīpasthaṁ mahābalam | śumbha uvāca | bhrātaḥ kimatra kartavyaṁ brūhi satyaṁ mahāmate
asked his heroic and mighty brother, who stood nearby. Shumbha said: "Brother, what is to be done in this matter? Tell me truly, O wise one."
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.5.24.32)
नार्येका योद्धुकामास्ति समाह्वयति साम्प्रतम् । अहं गच्छामि सङ्ग्रामे त्वं वा गच्छ बलान्वितः
nāryekā yoddhukāmāsti samāhvayati sāmpratam | ahaṁ gacchāmi saṅgrāme tvaṁ vā gaccha balānvitaḥ
"A certain woman desires to fight, and now challenges us. Shall I go into battle, or shall you go, together with your forces?"
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.5.24.33)
यद्रोचते निशुम्भात्र तत्कर्तव्यं मया किल । निशुम्भ उवाच । न मया न त्वया वीर गन्तव्यं रणमूर्धनि
yadrocate niśumbhātra tatkartavyaṁ mayā kila | niśumbha uvāca | na mayā na tvayā vīra gantavyaṁ raṇamūrdhani
"Whatever pleases you in this matter, Nishumbha, that indeed I shall do." Nishumbha said: "Neither I nor you, O hero, should go to the height of this battle."
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.5.24.34)
प्रेषयस्व महाराज त्वरितं धूम्रलोचनम् । स गत्वा तां रणे जित्वा गृहीत्वा चारुलोचनाम्
preṣayasva mahārāja tvaritaṁ dhūmralocanam | sa gatvā tāṁ raṇe jitvā gṛhītvā cārulocanām
"Send at once, O great king, Dhumralochana. Let him go, conquer that lovely-eyed one in battle, and, seizing her—"
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.5.24.35)
आगमिष्यति शुम्भात्र विवाहः संविधीयताम् । व्यास उवाच । तन्निशम्य वचस्तस्य शुम्भो भ्रातुः कनीयसः
āgamiṣyati śumbhātra vivāhaḥ saṁvidhīyatām | vyāsa uvāca | tanniśamya vacastasya śumbho bhrātuḥ kanīyasaḥ
"—return here, O Shumbha; then let the marriage be arranged." Vyasa said: Hearing these words of his younger brother, Shumbha,
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.5.24.36)
कोपात्सम्प्रेषयामास पार्श्वस्थं धूम्रलोचनम् । शुम्भ उवाच । धूम्रलोचन गच्छाशु सैन्येन महताऽऽवृतः
kopātsampreṣayāmāsa pārśvasthaṁ dhūmralocanam | śumbha uvāca | dhūmralocana gacchāśu sainyena mahatā''vṛtaḥ
in anger, sent forth Dhumralochana, who stood nearby. Shumbha said: "Dhumralochana, go swiftly, surrounded by a great army."
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.5.24.37)
गृहीत्वाऽऽनय तां मुग्धां स्ववीर्यमदमोहिताम् । देवो वा दानवो वापि मनुष्यो वा महाबलः
gṛhītvā''naya tāṁ mugdhāṁ svavīryamadamohitām | devo vā dānavo vāpi manuṣyo vā mahābalaḥ
"Seize and bring that innocent-looking girl, deluded by pride in her own valor. Whatever god, or danava, or exceedingly mighty man—"
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.5.24.38)
तत्पार्ष्णिग्राहतां प्राप्तो हन्तव्यस्तरसा त्वया । तत्पार्श्ववर्तिनीं कालीं हत्वा सङ्गृह्य तां पुनः
tatpārṣṇigrāhatāṁ prāpto hantavyastarasā tvayā | tatpārśvavartinīṁ kālīṁ hatvā saṅgṛhya tāṁ punaḥ
"—has taken up the role of her rearguard protector, must be swiftly slain by you. And having slain Kali, who stands by her side, and having seized her once more—"
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.5.24.39)
शीघ्रमत्र समागच्छ कृत्वा कार्यमनुत्तमम् । रक्षणीया त्वया साध्वी मुञ्चन्ती मृदुमार्गणान्
śīghramatra samāgaccha kṛtvā kāryamanuttamam | rakṣaṇīyā tvayā sādhvī muñcantī mṛdumārgaṇān
"—return here quickly, having accomplished this supreme task. That virtuous woman, loosing her tender arrows, is to be protected by you—"
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.5.24.40)
यत्नेन महता वीर मृदुदेहा कृशोदरी । तत्सहायाश्च हन्तव्या ये रणे शस्त्रपाणयः
yatnena mahatā vīra mṛdudehā kṛśodarī | tatsahāyāśca hantavyā ye raṇe śastrapāṇayaḥ
"—with the greatest care, O hero — she of tender body and slender waist. But her helpers, those bearing weapons in battle, are to be slain."
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.5.24.41)
सर्वथा सा न हन्तव्या रक्षणीया प्रयत्नतः । व्यास उवाच । इत्यादिष्टस्तदा राज्ञा तरसा धूम्रलोचनः
sarvathā sā na hantavyā rakṣaṇīyā prayatnataḥ | vyāsa uvāca | ityādiṣṭastadā rājñā tarasā dhūmralocanaḥ
"Under no circumstance is she to be slain — she is to be protected with every effort." Vyasa said: Thus commanded by the king, Dhumralochana swiftly—
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.5.24.42)
प्रणम्य शुम्भं सैन्येन भूतः शीघ्रं ययौ रणे । असाधूनां सहस्राणां षष्ट्या तेषां वृतस्तथा
praṇamya śumbhaṁ sainyena bhūtaḥ śīghraṁ yayau raṇe | asādhūnāṁ sahasrāṇāṁ ṣaṣṭyā teṣāṁ vṛtastathā
—bowing to Shumbha, and accompanied by his army, went quickly to the battle, surrounded likewise by sixty thousand wicked men.
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.5.24.43)
स ददर्श ततो देवीं रम्योपवनसंस्थिताम् । दृष्ट्वा तां मृगशावाक्षीं विनयेन समन्वितः
sa dadarśa tato devīṁ ramyopavanasaṁsthitām | dṛṣṭvā tāṁ mṛgaśāvākṣīṁ vinayena samanvitaḥ
He then beheld the Goddess, seated in a lovely grove; and seeing that fawn-eyed one, he, with courtesy,
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.5.24.44)
उवाच वचनं श्लक्ष्णं हेतुमद्रसभूषितम् । शृणु देवि महाभागे शुम्भस्त्वद्विरहातुरः
uvāca vacanaṁ ślakṣṇaṁ hetumadrasabhūṣitam | śṛṇu devi mahābhāge śumbhastvadvirahāturaḥ
spoke to her gentle words, adorned with reasoned argument and poetic sentiment: "Hear me, O most fortunate Devi — Shumbha, tormented by separation from you,
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.5.24.45)
दूतं प्रेषितवान्पार्श्वे तव नीतिविशारदः । रसभङ्गभयोद्विग्नः सामपूर्वं त्वयि स्वयम्
dūtaṁ preṣitavānpārśve tava nītiviśāradaḥ | rasabhaṅgabhayodvignaḥ sāmapūrvaṁ tvayi svayam
sent a messenger to your side, skilled as he is in statecraft; distressed by the fear of spoiling the mood, he himself, prefaced with conciliation, toward you—"
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.5.24.46)
तेनागत्य वचः प्रोक्तं विपरीतं वरानने । वचसा तेन मे भर्ता चिन्ताविष्टमना नृपः
tenāgatya vacaḥ proktaṁ viparītaṁ varānane | vacasā tena me bhartā cintāviṣṭamanā nṛpaḥ
"That messenger came and reported words entirely contrary to what was hoped, O fair-faced one; and by those words, my lord, the king, has become filled with anxious thought."
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.5.24.47)
बभूव रसमार्गज्ञे शुम्भः कामविमोहितः । दूतेन तेन न ज्ञातं हेतुगर्भं वचस्तव
babhūva rasamārgajñe śumbhaḥ kāmavimohitaḥ | dūtena tena na jñātaṁ hetugarbhaṁ vacastava
"O you who know the path of sentiment, Shumbha has become utterly bewildered by desire. That messenger did not truly grasp the reasoned intent hidden within your words."
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.5.24.48)
यो मां जयति सङ्ग्रामे यदुक्तं कठिनं वचः । न ज्ञातस्तेन सङ्ग्रामो द्विविधः खलु मानिनि
yo māṁ jayati saṅgrāme yaduktaṁ kaṭhinaṁ vacaḥ | na jñātastena saṅgrāmo dvividhaḥ khalu mānini
"'Whoever conquers me in battle' — this harsh-sounding phrase you spoke — he did not understand that battle, O proud one, is truly of two kinds:"
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.5.24.49)
रतिजोऽथोत्साहजश्च पात्रभेदे विवक्षितः । रतिजस्त्वयि वामोरु शत्रोरुत्साहजः स्मृतः
ratijo'thotsāhajaśca pātrabhede vivakṣitaḥ | ratijastvayi vāmoru śatrorutsāhajaḥ smṛtaḥ
"— one born of love-play, and one born of valor, meant to be understood differently according to the person involved. In you, O fair-thighed one, it is the love-born battle that is meant; in the enemy, it is remembered as the valor-born one."
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.5.24.50)
सुखदः प्रथमः कान्ते दुःखदश्चारिजः स्मृतः । जानाम्यहं वरारोहे भवत्या मानसं किल
sukhadaḥ prathamaḥ kānte duḥkhadaścārijaḥ smṛtaḥ | jānāmyahaṁ varārohe bhavatyā mānasaṁ kila
"The first, O beloved, is a giver of happiness; the one born from an enemy is remembered as a giver of sorrow. I know indeed, O lovely one, what is truly in your mind—"
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.5.24.51)
रतिसङ्ग्रामभावस्ते हृदये परिवर्तते । इति तज्ज्ञं विदित्वा मां त्वत्सकाशं नराधिपः
ratisaṅgrāmabhāvaste hṛdaye parivartate | iti tajjñaṁ viditvā māṁ tvatsakāśaṁ narādhipaḥ
"—that it is the state of love's own battle that revolves within your heart. Knowing this, and understanding it well, the lord of men has sent me to your presence—"
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.5.24.52)
प्रेषयामास शुम्भोऽद्य बलेन महताऽऽवृतम् । चतुरासि महाभागे शृणु मे वचनं मृदु
preṣayāmāsa śumbho'dya balena mahatā''vṛtam | caturāsi mahābhāge śṛṇu me vacanaṁ mṛdu
"—Shumbha, today, surrounded by a great army. You are clever, O most fortunate one; hear my gentle counsel."
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.5.24.53)
भज शुम्भं त्रिलोकेशं देवदर्पनिबर्हणम् । पट्टराज्ञी प्रिया भूत्वा भुङ्क्ष्व भोगाननुत्तमान्
bhaja śumbhaṁ trilokeśaṁ devadarpanibarhaṇam | paṭṭarājñī priyā bhūtvā bhuṅkṣva bhogānanuttamān
"Accept Shumbha, lord of the three worlds, the crusher of the gods' pride; becoming his beloved crowned queen, enjoy the highest pleasures."
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.5.24.54)
जेष्यति त्वां महाबाहुः शुम्भः कामबलार्थवित् । विचित्रान्कुरु हावांस्त्वं सोऽपि भावान्करिष्यति
jeṣyati tvāṁ mahābāhuḥ śumbhaḥ kāmabalārthavit | vicitrānkuru hāvāṁstvaṁ so'pi bhāvānkariṣyati
"The mighty-armed Shumbha, knowing well the strength of desire, will conquer you; display your manifold amorous gestures, and he too shall respond in kind."
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.5.24.55)
भविष्यति कालिकेयं तत्र वै नर्मसाक्षिणी । एवं सङ्गरयोगेन पतिर्मे परमार्थवित्
bhaviṣyati kālikeyaṁ tatra vai narmasākṣiṇī | evaṁ saṅgarayogena patirme paramārthavit
"This Kalika here shall stand as witness to your playful union. And thus, through this very 'battle,' my lord, who well understands the highest truth,"
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.5.24.56)
जित्वा त्वां सुखशय्यायां परिश्रान्तां करिष्यति । रक्तदेहां नखाघातैर्दन्तैश्च खण्डिताधराम्
jitvā tvāṁ sukhaśayyāyāṁ pariśrāntāṁ kariṣyati | raktadehāṁ nakhāghātairdantaiśca khaṇḍitādharām
"—having conquered you, shall leave you exhausted upon a bed of delight, your body reddened by the marks of nails, your lower lip bitten by teeth—"
Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.5.24.57)
स्वेदक्लिन्नां प्रभग्नां त्वां संविधास्यति भूपतिः । भविता मानसः कामो रतिसङ्ग्रामजस्तव
svedaklinnāṁ prabhagnāṁ tvāṁ saṁvidhāsyati bhūpatiḥ | bhavitā mānasaḥ kāmo ratisaṅgrāmajastava
"—drenched with sweat, and utterly spent shall the king render you; and the desire of your heart, born of that battle of love, shall thereby be fulfilled."
Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.5.24.58)
दर्शनाद्वश एवास्ते शुम्भः सर्वात्मना प्रिये । वचनं कुरु मे पथ्यं हितकृच्चापि पेशलम्
darśanādvaśa evāste śumbhaḥ sarvātmanā priye | vacanaṁ kuru me pathyaṁ hitakṛccāpi peśalam
"Merely at the sight of you, O beloved, Shumbha has already become wholly subject to you. Heed my counsel — it is beneficial and gracious."
Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.5.24.59)
भज शुम्भं गणाध्यक्षं माननीयातिमानिनी । मन्दभाग्याश्च ते नूनं ह्यस्त्रयुद्धप्रियाश्च ये
bhaja śumbhaṁ gaṇādhyakṣaṁ mānanīyātimāninī | mandabhāgyāśca te nūnaṁ hyastrayuddhapriyāśca ye
"Accept Shumbha, the lord of his hosts, O you most worthy of honor and yet so proud. Unfortunate indeed are those women who delight in battle with weapons —"
Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.5.24.60)
न तदर्हासि कान्ते त्वं सदा सुरतवल्लभे । अशोकं कुरु राजानं पादाघातविकासितम्
na tadarhāsi kānte tvaṁ sadā suratavallabhe | aśokaṁ kuru rājānaṁ pādāghātavikāsitam
"— you are not fit for such a thing, O beloved, ever dear in the delight of love. Make the king free from sorrow, as the ashoka tree blossoms at the touch of a foot —"
Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.5.24.61)
बकुलं सीधुसेकेन तथा कुरबकं कुरु
bakulaṁ sīdhusekena tathā kurabakaṁ kuru
"— and likewise make him, as it were, a bakula tree, sprinkled with sweet wine, and a kurabaka blossoming at your embrace."
