The Slaying of Chanda and Munda, and the Naming of Chamunda

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.5.26.1)

व्यास उवाच । इत्याज्ञप्तौ तदा वीरौ चण्डमुण्डौ महाबलौ । जग्मतुस्तरसैवाजौ सैन्येन महतान्वितौ

vyāsa uvāca | ityājñaptau tadā vīrau caṇḍamuṇḍau mahābalau | jagmatustarasaivājau sainyena mahatānvitau

Vyasa said: Thus commanded, those two mighty heroes Chanda and Munda swiftly set out for battle, accompanied by a vast army.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.5.26.2)

दृष्ट्वा तत्र स्थितां देवीं देवानां हितकारिणीम् । ऊचतुस्तौ महावीर्यौ तदा सामान्वितं वचः

dṛṣṭvā tatra sthitāṁ devīṁ devānāṁ hitakāriṇīm | ūcatustau mahāvīryau tadā sāmānvitaṁ vacaḥ

Seeing the Goddess standing there, the benefactress of the gods, those two mighty warriors then addressed her with conciliatory words.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.5.26.3)

बाले त्वं किं न जानासि शुम्भं सुरबलार्दनम् । निशुम्भञ्च महावीर्यं तुराषाड्विजयोद्धतम्

bāle tvaṁ kiṁ na jānāsi śumbhaṁ surabalārdanam | niśumbhañca mahāvīryaṁ turāṣāḍvijayoddhatam

"O maiden, do you not know of Shumbha, the crusher of the strength of the gods, and of mighty Nishumbha, exultant in his conquest even over Indra?"

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.5.26.4)

त्वमेकासि वरारोहे कालिकासिंहसंयुता । जेतुमिच्छसि दुर्बुद्धे शुम्भं सर्वबलान्वितम्

tvamekāsi varārohe kālikāsiṁhasaṁyutā | jetumicchasi durbuddhe śumbhaṁ sarvabalānvitam

"O fair one, you are alone, with only Kalika and your lion for company, and yet, O foolish one, you wish to conquer Shumbha, who commands every kind of force!"

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.5.26.5)

मतिदः कोऽपि ते नास्ति नारी वापि नरोऽपि वा । देवास्त्वां प्रेरयन्त्येव विनाशाय तवैव ते

matidaḥ ko'pi te nāsti nārī vāpi naro'pi vā | devāstvāṁ prerayantyeva vināśāya tavaiva te

"You have no one at all to counsel you wisely, neither woman nor man — it is the gods alone who have sent you here, and only for your own destruction."

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.5.26.6)

विमृश्य कुरु तन्वङ्गि कार्यं स्वपरयोर्बलम् । अष्टादशभुजत्वात्त्वं गर्वञ्च कुरुषे मृषा

vimṛśya kuru tanvaṅgi kāryaṁ svaparayorbalam | aṣṭādaśabhujatvāttvaṁ garvañca kuruṣe mṛṣā

"O slender-limbed one, weigh well the strength of both sides before you act. Merely because you have eighteen arms, you nurse a vain and empty pride."

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.5.26.7)

किं भुजैर्बहुभिर्व्यर्थैरायुधैः किं श्रमप्रदैः । शुम्भस्याग्रे सुराणां वै जेतुः समरशालिनः

kiṁ bhujairbahubhirvyarthairāyudhaiḥ kiṁ śramapradaiḥ | śumbhasyāgre surāṇāṁ vai jetuḥ samaraśālinaḥ

"Of what use are so many arms, wasted, or weapons that only tire you out, when you stand before Shumbha, the very conqueror of the gods, skilled in war?"

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.5.26.8)

ऐरावतकरच्छेत्तुर्दन्तिदारणकारिणः । जयिनः सुरसङ्घानां कार्यं कुरु मनोगतम्

airāvatakaracchetturdantidāraṇakāriṇaḥ | jayinaḥ surasaṅghānāṁ kāryaṁ kuru manogatam

"He is the one who severed the very trunk of Airavata, who tears apart elephants, and who has conquered all the hosts of the gods — do what your heart truly desires."

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.5.26.9)

वृथा गर्वायसे कान्ते कुरु मे वचनं प्रियम् । हितं तव विशालाक्षि सुखदं दुःखनाशनम्

vṛthā garvāyase kānte kuru me vacanaṁ priyam | hitaṁ tava viśālākṣi sukhadaṁ duḥkhanāśanam

"In vain do you swell with pride, O lovely one; heed my dear counsel — it is for your own good, O large-eyed one, bringing happiness and destroying sorrow."

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.5.26.10)

दुःखदानि च कार्याणि त्याज्यानि दूरतो बुधैः । सुखदानि च सेव्यानि शास्त्रतत्त्वविशारदैः

duḥkhadāni ca kāryāṇi tyājyāni dūrato budhaiḥ | sukhadāni ca sevyāni śāstratattvaviśāradaiḥ

"Deeds that bring only suffering are to be abandoned entirely by the wise; those skilled in the truths of the scriptures pursue only what brings happiness."

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.5.26.11)

चतुरासि पिकालापे पश्य शुम्भबलं महत् । प्रत्यक्षं सुरसङ्घानां मर्दनेन महोदयम्

caturāsi pikālāpe paśya śumbhabalaṁ mahat | pratyakṣaṁ surasaṅghānāṁ mardanena mahodayam

"You are clever, O sweet-voiced one; behold the vast might of Shumbha, made manifest before your very eyes through the crushing of the hosts of gods."

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.5.26.12)

प्रत्यक्षञ्च परित्यज्य वृथैवानुमितिः किल । सन्देहसहिते कार्ये न विपश्चित्प्रवर्तते

pratyakṣañca parityajya vṛthaivānumitiḥ kila | sandehasahite kārye na vipaścitpravartate

"To abandon what is directly seen and rely instead on mere inference is truly futile; a wise person never proceeds in a matter fraught with doubt."

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.5.26.13)

शत्रुः सुराणां परमः शुम्भः समरदुर्जयः । तस्मात्त्वां प्रेरयन्त्यत्र देवा दैत्येशपीडिताः

śatruḥ surāṇāṁ paramaḥ śumbhaḥ samaradurjayaḥ | tasmāttvāṁ prerayantyatra devā daityeśapīḍitāḥ

"Shumbha is the supreme enemy of the gods, unconquerable in battle; that is precisely why the gods, tormented by this lord of demons, have sent you here."

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.5.26.14)

तस्मात्तद्वचनैः स्निग्धैर्वञ्चितासि शुचिस्मिते । दुःखाय तव देवानां शिक्षा स्वार्थस्य साधिका

tasmāttadvacanaiḥ snigdhairvañcitāsi śucismite | duḥkhāya tava devānāṁ śikṣā svārthasya sādhikā

"So, O pure-smiling one, you have been deceived by their affectionate-sounding words — this counsel of the gods serves only their own self-interest, at the cost of your suffering."

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.5.26.15)

कार्यमित्रं परिक्षिप्य धर्ममित्रं समाश्रयेत् । देवाः स्वार्थपराः कामं त्वामहं सत्यमब्रुवम्

kāryamitraṁ parikṣipya dharmamitraṁ samāśrayet | devāḥ svārthaparāḥ kāmaṁ tvāmahaṁ satyamabruvam

"One should cast aside a friend of mere convenience and take refuge only in a true, righteous friend. The gods are wholly devoted to their own interest — I tell you this truthfully."

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.5.26.16)

भज शुम्भं सुरेशानं जेतारं भुवनेश्वरम् । चतुरं सुन्दरं शूरं कामशास्त्रविशारदम्

bhaja śumbhaṁ sureśānaṁ jetāraṁ bhuvaneśvaram | caturaṁ sundaraṁ śūraṁ kāmaśāstraviśāradam

"Take Shumbha as your lord, conqueror and ruler of the worlds — clever, handsome, valiant, and skilled in the arts of love."

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.5.26.17)

ऐश्वर्यं सर्वलोकानां प्राप्स्यसे शुम्भशासनात् । निश्चयं परमं कृत्वा भर्तारं भज शोभनम्

aiśvaryaṁ sarvalokānāṁ prāpsyase śumbhaśāsanāt | niścayaṁ paramaṁ kṛtvā bhartāraṁ bhaja śobhanam

"Under Shumbha's rule you shall obtain sovereignty over all the worlds. Make this your firm resolve, and accept that splendid lord as your husband."

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.5.26.18)

व्यास उवाच । इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा चण्डस्य जगदम्बिका । मेघगम्भीरनिनदं जगर्ज पुनरब्रवीत्

vyāsa uvāca | iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā caṇḍasya jagadambikā | meghagambhīraninadaṁ jagarja punarabravīt

Vyasa said: Hearing these words of Chanda, the Mother of the Universe roared once more, deep as thunderclouds, and spoke thus.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.5.26.19)

गच्छ जाल्म मृषा किं त्वं भाषसे वञ्चकं वचः । त्यक्त्वा हरिहरादींश्च शुम्भं कस्माद्भजे पतिम्

gaccha jālma mṛṣā kiṁ tvaṁ bhāṣase vañcakaṁ vacaḥ | tyaktvā hariharādīṁśca śumbhaṁ kasmādbhaje patim

"Go, wretch! Why do you speak such false and deceitful words? Why should I abandon the likes of Hari and Hara and take Shumbha for my husband?"

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.5.26.20)

न मे कश्चित्पतिः कार्यो न कार्यं पतिना सह । स्वामिनी सर्वभूतानामहमेव निशामय

na me kaścitpatiḥ kāryo na kāryaṁ patinā saha | svāminī sarvabhūtānāmahameva niśāmaya

"I have no need whatever of a husband, nor any business with one. Know that I alone am the sovereign mistress of all beings."

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.5.26.21)

शुम्भा मे बहवो दृष्टा निशुम्भाश्च सहस्रशः । घातिताश्च मया पूर्वं शतशो दैत्यदानवाः

śumbhā me bahavo dṛṣṭā niśumbhāśca sahasraśaḥ | ghātitāśca mayā pūrvaṁ śataśo daityadānavāḥ

"I have seen many Shumbhas, and thousands of Nishumbhas, and I myself have slain hundreds of demons and danavas before this."

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.5.26.22)

ममाग्रे देववृन्दानि विनष्टानि युगे युगे । नाशं यास्यन्ति दैत्यानां यूथानि पुनरद्य वै

mamāgre devavṛndāni vinaṣṭāni yuge yuge | nāśaṁ yāsyanti daityānāṁ yūthāni punaradya vai

"Before me, in age after age, whole hosts of gods have perished; and this day again, the very legions of the demons shall meet their end."

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.5.26.23)

काल एवागतोऽस्त्यत्र दैत्यसंहारकारकः । वृथा त्वं कुरुषे यत्नं रक्षणायात्मसन्ततेः

kāla evāgato'styatra daityasaṁhārakārakaḥ | vṛthā tvaṁ kuruṣe yatnaṁ rakṣaṇāyātmasantateḥ

"Death itself, the destroyer of demons, has now arrived here. In vain do you make this effort to protect your own kin."

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.5.26.24)

कुरु युद्धं वीरधर्मरक्षायै त्वं महामते । मरणं भावि दुस्त्याज्यं यशो रक्ष्यं महात्मभिः

kuru yuddhaṁ vīradharmarakṣāyai tvaṁ mahāmate | maraṇaṁ bhāvi dustyājyaṁ yaśo rakṣyaṁ mahātmabhiḥ

"Fight instead, O wise one, to uphold the duty of a warrior. Death that must come cannot be escaped — it is one's honor that great souls must guard."

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.5.26.25)

किं ते कार्यं निशुम्भेन शुम्भेन च दुरात्मना । वीरधर्मं परं प्राप्य गच्छ स्वर्गं सुरालयम्

kiṁ te kāryaṁ niśumbhena śumbhena ca durātmanā | vīradharmaṁ paraṁ prāpya gaccha svargaṁ surālayam

"What further use have you for the evil-minded Nishumbha and Shumbha? Attain the highest duty of a hero, and go to heaven, the abode of the gods."

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.5.26.26)

शुम्भो निशुम्भश्चैवान्ये ये चात्र तव बान्धवाः । सर्वे तवानुगाः पश्चादागमिष्यन्ति साम्प्रतम्

śumbho niśumbhaścaivānye ye cātra tava bāndhavāḥ | sarve tavānugāḥ paścādāgamiṣyanti sāmpratam

"Shumbha, Nishumbha, and whatever other kinsmen of yours remain here — all of them shall presently follow after you, this very day."

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.5.26.27)

क्रमशः सर्वदैत्यानां करिष्याम्यद्य सङ्क्षयम् । विषादं त्यज मन्दात्मन् कुरु युद्धं विशाम्पते

kramaśaḥ sarvadaityānāṁ kariṣyāmyadya saṅkṣayam | viṣādaṁ tyaja mandātman kuru yuddhaṁ viśāmpate

"One by one I shall today bring about the utter destruction of all the demons. Abandon your despair, O foolish one, and fight, O lord of men."

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.5.26.28)

त्वामहं निहनिष्यामि भ्रातरं तव साम्प्रतम् । ततः शुम्भं निशुम्भं च रक्तबीजं मदोत्कटम्

tvāmahaṁ nihaniṣyāmi bhrātaraṁ tava sāmpratam | tataḥ śumbhaṁ niśumbhaṁ ca raktabījaṁ madotkaṭam

"This very day I shall slay you and your brother; after that, Shumbha, Nishumbha, and the arrogant Raktabija —"

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.5.26.29)

अन्यांश्च दानवान्सर्वान्हत्वाहं समराङ्गणे । गमिष्यामि यथास्थानं तिष्ठ वा गच्छ वा द्रुतम्

anyāṁśca dānavānsarvānhatvāhaṁ samarāṅgaṇe | gamiṣyāmi yathāsthānaṁ tiṣṭha vā gaccha vā drutam

"— and all the other demons as well, having slain them upon the field of battle, I shall then return to my own abode. Now stand your ground, or flee at once."

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.5.26.30)

गृहाणास्त्रं वृथापुष्ट कुरु युद्धं मयाधुना । किं जल्पसि मृषा वाक्यं सर्वथा कातरप्रियम्

gṛhāṇāstraṁ vṛthāpuṣṭa kuru yuddhaṁ mayādhunā | kiṁ jalpasi mṛṣā vākyaṁ sarvathā kātarapriyam

"Take up your weapon, O one fattened in vain! Fight with me now. Why do you prattle these false words, fit only for a coward?"

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.5.26.31)

व्यास उवाच । तयेत्थं प्रेरितौ दैत्यौ चण्डमुण्डौ क्रुधान्वितौ । ज्याशब्दं तरसा घोरं चक्रतुर्बलदर्पितौ

vyāsa uvāca | tayetthaṁ preritau daityau caṇḍamuṇḍau krudhānvitau | jyāśabdaṁ tarasā ghoraṁ cakraturbaladarpitau

Vyasa said: Thus provoked by her, the two demons Chanda and Munda, filled with rage and proud of their strength, at once twanged their bowstrings with a terrible sound.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.5.26.32)

सापि शङ्खस्वनं चक्रे पूरयन्ती दिशो दश । सिंहोऽपि कुपितस्तावन्नादं समकरोद्बली

sāpi śaṅkhasvanaṁ cakre pūrayantī diśo daśa | siṁho'pi kupitastāvannādaṁ samakarodbalī

She too blew her conch, filling all ten directions with its sound, and her powerful lion, likewise enraged, let out a mighty roar.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.5.26.33)

तेन नादेन शक्राद्या जहर्षुरमरास्तदा । मुनयो यक्षगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाः साध्याश्च किन्नराः

tena nādena śakrādyā jaharṣuramarāstadā | munayo yakṣagandharvāḥ siddhāḥ sādhyāśca kinnarāḥ

At that sound, Indra and the other immortals rejoiced, as did the sages, yakshas, gandharvas, siddhas, sadhyas, and kinnaras.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.5.26.34)

युद्धं परस्परं तत्र जातं कातरभीतिदम् । चण्डिकाचण्डयोस्तीव्रं बाणखड्गगदादिभिः

yuddhaṁ parasparaṁ tatra jātaṁ kātarabhītidam | caṇḍikācaṇḍayostīvraṁ bāṇakhaḍgagadādibhiḥ

Then a fierce battle broke out between them, terrifying to the faint of heart, fought between Chandika and Chanda with arrows, swords, maces, and other weapons.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.5.26.35)

चण्डमुक्ताञ्छरान्देवी चिच्छेद निशितैः शरैः । मुमोच पुनरुग्रान्सा बाणांश्च पन्नगानिव

caṇḍamuktāñcharāndevī ciccheda niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ | mumoca punarugrānsā bāṇāṁśca pannagāniva

The Goddess cut down the arrows loosed by Chanda with her own sharp arrows, and then loosed further fierce shafts of her own, like serpents striking.

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.5.26.36)

गगनं छादितं तत्र सङ्ग्रामे विशिखैस्तदा । शलभैरिव मेघान्ते कर्षकाणां भयप्रदैः

gaganaṁ chāditaṁ tatra saṅgrāme viśikhaistadā | śalabhairiva meghānte karṣakāṇāṁ bhayapradaiḥ

The sky in that battle was then covered over with arrows, just as it is covered with locusts at the end of the rains, striking terror into farmers.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.5.26.37)

मुण्डोऽपि सैनिकैः सार्धं पपात तरसा रणे । मुमोच बाणवृष्टिं वै क्रुद्धः परमदारुणः

muṇḍo'pi sainikaiḥ sārdhaṁ papāta tarasā raṇe | mumoca bāṇavṛṣṭiṁ vai kruddhaḥ paramadāruṇaḥ

Munda too, together with his soldiers, rushed swiftly into the fray, and, enraged and utterly fierce, let loose a shower of arrows.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.5.26.38)

बाणजालं महद् दृष्ट्वा कुद्धा तत्राम्बिका भृशम् । कोपेन वदनं तस्या बभूव घनसन्निभम्

bāṇajālaṁ mahad dṛṣṭvā kuddhā tatrāmbikā bhṛśam | kopena vadanaṁ tasyā babhūva ghanasannibham

Seeing that vast net of arrows, Ambika grew exceedingly furious, and her face, in her anger, turned dark as a storm-cloud.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.5.26.39)

कदलीपुष्पनेत्रञ्च भृकुटीकुटिलं तदा । निष्क्रान्ता च तदा काली ललाटफलकाद्द्रुतम्

kadalīpuṣpanetrañca bhṛkuṭīkuṭilaṁ tadā | niṣkrāntā ca tadā kālī lalāṭaphalakāddrutam

Her eyes then took on the hue of the plantain flower, her brow grew crooked with a frown, and at once Kali sprang forth swiftly from her forehead.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.5.26.40)

व्याघ्रचर्माम्बरा क्रूरा गजचर्मोत्तरीयका । मुण्डमालाधरा घोरा शुष्कवापीसमोदरा

vyāghracarmāmbarā krūrā gajacarmottarīyakā | muṇḍamālādharā ghorā śuṣkavāpīsamodarā

Terrible, clad in a tiger-skin, with an elephant-hide as her upper garment, wearing a garland of skulls, fearsome, her belly hollow as a dried-up pool —

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.5.26.41)

खड्गपाशधरातीव भीषणा भयदायिनी । खट्वाङ्गधारिणी रौद्रा कालरात्रिरिवापरा

khaḍgapāśadharātīva bhīṣaṇā bhayadāyinī | khaṭvāṅgadhāriṇī raudrā kālarātririvāparā

— bearing sword and noose, utterly dreadful, striking fear into all, wielding a skull-topped staff, terrible, like a second Kalaratri, the night of doom itself.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.5.26.42)

विस्तीर्णवदना जिह्वां चालयन्ती मुहुर्मुहुः । विस्तारजघना वेगाज्जघानासुरसैनिकान्

vistīrṇavadanā jihvāṁ cālayantī muhurmuhuḥ | vistārajaghanā vegājjaghānāsurasainikān

With her vast, gaping mouth, her tongue flickering again and again, and her huge hips, she rushed forth and struck down the soldiers of the demons.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.5.26.43)

करे कृत्वा महावीरांस्तरसा सा रुषान्विता । मुखे चिक्षेप दैतेयान्पिपेष दशनैः शनैः

kare kṛtvā mahāvīrāṁstarasā sā ruṣānvitā | mukhe cikṣepa daiteyānpipeṣa daśanaiḥ śanaiḥ

Seizing the great warriors in her hands, furious, she flung the demons into her mouth and slowly crushed them between her teeth.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.5.26.44)

गजान्घण्टान्वितान्हस्ते गृहीत्वा निदधौ मुखे । सारोहान्भक्षयित्वाजौ साट्टहासं चकार ह

gajānghaṇṭānvitānhaste gṛhītvā nidadhau mukhe | sārohānbhakṣayitvājau sāṭṭahāsaṁ cakāra ha

Grasping elephants, bells and all, in her hand, she thrust them into her mouth; having devoured them, riders and all, on the battlefield, she burst into loud, ringing laughter.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.5.26.45)

तथैव तुरगानुष्ट्रांस्तथा सारथिभिः सह । निक्षिप्य वक्त्त्रे दशनैश्चर्वयत्यतिभैरवम्

tathaiva turagānuṣṭrāṁstathā sārathibhiḥ saha | nikṣipya vakttre daśanaiścarvayatyatibhairavam

In just the same way, she threw horses and camels, together with their charioteers, into her mouth and chewed them between her teeth, in a manner most terrifying.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.5.26.46)

हन्यमानं बलं प्रेक्ष्य चण्डमुण्डौ महासुरौ । छादयामासतुर्देवीं बाणासारैरनन्तरैः

hanyamānaṁ balaṁ prekṣya caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāsurau | chādayāmāsaturdevīṁ bāṇāsārairanantaraiḥ

Seeing their army being destroyed, the two great demons Chanda and Munda covered the Goddess with an unbroken torrent of arrows.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.5.26.47)

चण्डश्चण्डकरच्छायं चक्रं चक्रधरायुधम् । चिक्षेप तरसा देवीं ननाद च मुहुर्मुहुः

caṇḍaścaṇḍakaracchāyaṁ cakraṁ cakradharāyudham | cikṣepa tarasā devīṁ nanāda ca muhurmuhuḥ

Chanda hurled at the Goddess his discus, fierce and blazing like the rays of the sun, the very weapon of the discus-bearer, and roared again and again.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.5.26.48)

नदन्तं वीक्ष्य तं काली रथाङ्गञ्च रविप्रभम् । बाणेनैकेन चिच्छेद सुप्रभं तत्सुदर्शनम्

nadantaṁ vīkṣya taṁ kālī rathāṅgañca raviprabham | bāṇenaikena ciccheda suprabhaṁ tatsudarśanam

Seeing him roaring, and seeing that brilliant discus, radiant as the sun, Kali cut it — that splendid Sudarshana — to pieces with a single arrow.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.5.26.49)

तं जघान शरैस्तीक्ष्णैश्चण्डं चण्डी शिलाशितैः । मूर्च्छितोऽसौ पपातोर्व्यां देवीबाणार्दितो भृशम्

taṁ jaghāna śaraistīkṣṇaiścaṇḍaṁ caṇḍī śilāśitaiḥ | mūrcchito'sau papātorvyāṁ devībāṇārdito bhṛśam

Then Chandi struck Chanda with sharp arrows whetted on stone; tormented severely by the Goddess's arrows, he fell unconscious to the ground.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.5.26.50)

पतितं भ्रातरं वीक्ष्य मुण्डो दुःखार्दितस्तदा । चकार शरवृष्टिञ्च कालिकोपरि कोपतः

patitaṁ bhrātaraṁ vīkṣya muṇḍo duḥkhārditastadā | cakāra śaravṛṣṭiñca kālikopari kopataḥ

Seeing his brother fallen, Munda, tormented with grief, then in his fury let loose a shower of arrows upon Kalika.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.5.26.51)

चण्डिका मुण्डनिर्मुक्तां शरवृष्टिं सुदारुणाम् । ईषिकास्त्रैर्बलान्मुक्तैश्चकार तिलशः क्षणात्

caṇḍikā muṇḍanirmuktāṁ śaravṛṣṭiṁ sudāruṇām | īṣikāstrairbalānmuktaiścakāra tilaśaḥ kṣaṇāt

Chandika, with her own weapons loosed with full force, in an instant shattered that terrible shower of arrows released by Munda into fragments as small as sesame seeds.

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.5.26.52)

अर्धचन्द्रेण बाणेन ताडयामास तं पुनः । पतितोऽसौ महावीर्यो मेदिन्यां मदवर्जितः

ardhacandreṇa bāṇena tāḍayāmāsa taṁ punaḥ | patito'sau mahāvīryo medinyāṁ madavarjitaḥ

Then with a crescent-headed arrow she struck him again, and that mighty hero fell to the earth, all his pride stripped away.

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.5.26.53)

हाहाकारो महानासीद्दानवानां बले तदा । जहर्षुरमराः सर्वे गगनस्था गतव्यथाः

hāhākāro mahānāsīddānavānāṁ bale tadā | jaharṣuramarāḥ sarve gaganasthā gatavyathāḥ

A great cry of lamentation then rose up among the demon army, while all the immortals, standing in the sky, rejoiced, their anguish gone.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.5.26.54)

विहाय मूर्च्छां चण्डस्तु सङ्गृह्य महतीं गदाम् । तरसा ताडयामास कालिकां दक्षिणे भुजे

vihāya mūrcchāṁ caṇḍastu saṅgṛhya mahatīṁ gadām | tarasā tāḍayāmāsa kālikāṁ dakṣiṇe bhuje

Then Chanda, recovering from his swoon, seized a huge mace and swiftly struck Kalika upon her right arm.

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.5.26.55)

वञ्चयित्वा गदाघातं तं बबन्ध महासुरम् । तरसा बाणपाशेन मन्त्रमुक्तेन कालिका

vañcayitvā gadāghātaṁ taṁ babandha mahāsuram | tarasā bāṇapāśena mantramuktena kālikā

But Kalika, evading the blow of the mace, swiftly bound that great demon with an arrow-noose released with the power of mantra.

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.5.26.56)

उत्थितस्तु तदा मुण्डो बद्धं दृष्ट्वानुजं बलात् । आजगाम सुसन्नद्धः शक्तिं कृत्वा करे दृढाम्

utthitastu tadā muṇḍo baddhaṁ dṛṣṭvānujaṁ balāt | ājagāma susannaddhaḥ śaktiṁ kṛtvā kare dṛḍhām

Then Munda, rising up and seeing his younger brother forcibly bound, came on fully armed, a firm spear grasped in his hand.

Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.5.26.57)

आगच्छन्तं तदा काली दानवं वीक्ष्य सत्वरम् । बबन्ध तरसा तं तु द्वितीयं भ्रातरं भृशम्

āgacchantaṁ tadā kālī dānavaṁ vīkṣya satvaram | babandha tarasā taṁ tu dvitīyaṁ bhrātaraṁ bhṛśam

Seeing that demon advancing, Kali at once swiftly and firmly bound this second brother as well.

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.5.26.58)

गृहीत्वा तौ महावीर्यौ चण्डमुण्डौ शशाविव । कुर्वती विपुलं हासमाजगामाम्बिकां प्रति

gṛhītvā tau mahāvīryau caṇḍamuṇḍau śaśāviva | kurvatī vipulaṁ hāsamājagāmāmbikāṁ prati

Having seized those two mighty heroes, Chanda and Munda, as easily as two hares, she came toward Ambika, laughing uproariously.

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.5.26.59)

आगत्य तामथोवाच गृहाणेमौ पशू प्रिये । रणयज्ञार्थमानीतौ दानवौ रणदुर्जयौ

āgatya tāmathovāca gṛhāṇemau paśū priye | raṇayajñārthamānītau dānavau raṇadurjayau

Approaching her, she said: "O beloved, take these two beasts — these two demons, unconquerable in battle, I have brought here for the sacrifice of war."

Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.5.26.60)

तावानीतौ तदा वीक्ष्य चण्डिका तौ वृकाविव । अम्बिका कालिकां प्राह माधुरीसंयुतं वचः

tāvānītau tadā vīkṣya caṇḍikā tau vṛkāviva | ambikā kālikāṁ prāha mādhurīsaṁyutaṁ vacaḥ

Seeing those two brought before her, Chandika, as though they were mere wolves, then spoke to Kalika in sweet and gentle words.

Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.5.26.61)

वधं मा कुरु मा मुञ्च चतुरासि रणप्रिये । देवानां कार्यसंसिद्धिः कर्तव्या तरसा त्वया

vadhaṁ mā kuru mā muñca caturāsi raṇapriye | devānāṁ kāryasaṁsiddhiḥ kartavyā tarasā tvayā

"Do not kill them yet, but do not release them either — you are so clever, O lover of battle. Yet the task of the gods must be accomplished swiftly by you."

Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.5.26.62)

व्यास उवाच । इति तस्या वचः श्रुत्वा कालिका प्राह तां पुनः । युद्धयज्ञेऽतिविख्याते खड्गयूपे प्रतिष्ठिते

vyāsa uvāca | iti tasyā vacaḥ śrutvā kālikā prāha tāṁ punaḥ | yuddhayajñe'tivikhyāte khaḍgayūpe pratiṣṭhite

Vyasa said: Hearing her words, Kalika replied to her once more: "In this most renowned sacrifice of war, where the sword itself stands as the sacrificial post —

Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.5.26.63)

आलम्भञ्च करिष्यामि यथा हिंसा न जायते । इत्युक्त्वा सा तदा देवी खड्गेन शिरसी तयोः

ālambhañca kariṣyāmi yathā hiṁsā na jāyate | ityuktvā sā tadā devī khaḍgena śirasī tayoḥ

— I shall perform the offering in such a way that no further violence arises." So saying, the Goddess then, with her sword, upon the heads of the two of them —

Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.5.26.64)

चकर्त तरसा काली पपौ च रुधिरं मुदा । एवं दैत्यौ हतौ दृष्ट्वा मुदितोवाच चाम्बिका

cakarta tarasā kālī papau ca rudhiraṁ mudā | evaṁ daityau hatau dṛṣṭvā muditovāca cāmbikā

— Kali swiftly severed them, and drank their blood with delight. Seeing the two demons thus slain, Ambika spoke joyfully.

Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.5.26.65)

कृतं कार्यं सुराणां ते ददाम्यद्य वरं शुभम् । चण्डमुण्डौ हतौ यस्मात्तस्मात्ते नाम कालिके । चामुण्डेति सुविख्यातं भविष्यति धरातले

kṛtaṁ kāryaṁ surāṇāṁ te dadāmyadya varaṁ śubham | caṇḍamuṇḍau hatau yasmāttasmātte nāma kālike | cāmuṇḍeti suvikhyātaṁ bhaviṣyati dharātale

"The task of the gods is accomplished; today I grant you an auspicious boon. Since it was you who slew Chanda and Munda, O Kalika, your name shall become renowned upon this earth as Chamunda."
