khalaṁ māyāvinaṁ ghoraṁ strīvadhyaṁ varadarpitam | duḥkhadaṁ sarvadevānāṁ nānārūpadharaṁ śatam
— that wicked one, master of illusion, terrible, slayable only by a woman, arrogant with his boon, a cause of suffering to every god, who takes on a hundred forms.
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.5.9.29)

devyuvāca | bhayaṁ tyajantu gīrvāṇā mahiṣānmandacetasaḥ | haniṣyāmi raṇe'dyaiva varadṛptaṁ vimohitam
The Goddess said: Let the gods abandon their fear of that dull-witted Mahisha. This very day, in battle, I shall slay that boon-swollen, deluded one.
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.5.9.32)
vyāsa uvāca | ityuktvā sā surāndevī jahāsātīva susvaram | citrametacca saṁsāre bhramamohayutaṁ jagat
Vyasa said: Having said this to the gods, the Goddess laughed loudly, in a most sweet voice. Wondrous indeed is this world, so bound up in confusion and delusion —
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.5.9.33)
brahmaviṣṇumaheśādyāḥ sendrāścānye surāstathā | kampayuktā bhayatrastā vartante mahiṣātkila
— that Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesha, and the rest, together with Indra and the other gods, remain trembling and terror-stricken because of Mahisha!
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.5.9.34)
aho daivabalaṁ ghoraṁ durjayaṁ surasattamāḥ | kālaḥ kartāsti duḥkhānāṁ sukhānāṁ prabhurīśvaraḥ
O foremost of gods, ah, how terrible and unconquerable is the power of fate! Time alone is the maker of sorrows and joys, the lord and master.
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.5.9.35)
sṛṣṭipālanasaṁhāre samarthā api te yadā | muhyanti kleśasantaptā mahiṣeṇa prapīḍitāḥ
When even those capable of creation, preservation, and destruction can be so oppressed by Mahisha as to grow bewildered, tormented by affliction —
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.5.9.36)
iti kṛtvā smitaṁ devī sāṭṭahāsaṁ cakāra ha | uccaiḥ śabdaṁ mahāghoraṁ dānavānāṁ bhayapradam

gṛhītvā taṁ durātmānaṁ matsamīpaṁ nayantviha | haniṣyāmi durācāraṁ garjantaṁ smayadurmadam
'— let that evil-souled one be seized and brought into my presence. I shall slay that ill-behaved, roaring, arrogant fool.'
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.5.9.43)
kṣīṇāyuṣyaṁ mandamatiṁ nayāmi yamasādanam | parājitāḥ surāḥ kāmaṁ na garjanti bhayāturāḥ

nāsurā mama vaśyāste kasyedaṁ mūḍhaceṣṭitam | tvaritā māmupāyāntu jñātvā śabdasya kāraṇam
'These are not even asuras subject to me — whose foolish doing is this? Let messengers come to me swiftly, once they have learned the cause of the sound.'
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.5.9.45)
ahaṁ gatvā haniṣyāmi taṁ pāpaṁ vitathaśramam | vyāsa uvāca | ityuktāstena te dūtā devīṁ sarvāṅgasundarīm
'I myself shall go and slay that sinner, whose effort will prove vain.' Vyasa said: Thus instructed, those messengers, sent by him, on seeing the Goddess, beautiful in every limb —
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.5.9.46)
aṣṭādaśabhujāṁ divyāṁ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitām | sarvalakṣaṇasampannāṁ varāyudhadharāṁ śubhām
— of eighteen divine arms, adorned with every ornament, endowed with every auspicious mark, bearing excellent weapons, auspicious —
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.5.9.47)

dadhatīṁ caṣakaṁ haste pibantīṁ ca muhurmadhu | saṁvīkṣya bhayabhītāste jagmustrastāḥ suśaṅkitāḥ

sarvāṅgabhūṣaṇā nārī sarvaratnopaśobhitā | na mānuṣī nāsurī sā divyarūpā manoharā
