Skandha 6 · Chapter 16

The Haihayas' Seizure of Wealth and the Slaying of the Bhrigus

Chapter 15All chaptersChapter 17

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.6.16.1)

janamejaya uvāca | kule kasya samutpannāḥ kṣatriyā haihayāśca te | brahmahatyāmanādṛtya nijaghnurbhārgavāṁśca ye

Janamejaya said: In whose lineage were those Haihaya kshatriyas born, who, disregarding the sin of killing brahmins, slew the descendants of Bhrigu?

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.6.16.2)

vairasya kāraṇaṁ teṣāṁ kiṁ me brūhi pitāmaha | nimittena vinā krodhaṁ kathaṁ kurvanti sattamāḥ

Tell me the cause of their enmity, O grandsire; how could virtuous men fall into anger without any cause?

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.6.16.3)

vairaṁ purohitaiḥ sārdhaṁ kasmātteṣāmajāyata | nālpahetorhi tadvairaṁ kṣatriyāṇāṁ bhaviṣyati

For what reason did enmity arise between them and their family priests? Such enmity of kshatriyas would surely not arise for a trivial cause.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.6.16.4)

Otherwise, how could they have slain venerable, faultless brahmins? Powerful as they were in arms, why were they not afraid of sin?

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.6.16.5)

svalpe'parādhe ko hanyādvāḍavānkṣatriyarṣabhaḥ | sandeho me muniśreṣṭha kāraṇaṁ vaktumarhasi

What foremost kshatriya would slay brahmins for a trifling offense? I am in doubt, O best of sages; you are fit to tell me the reason.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.6.16.6)

sūta uvāca | iti pṛṣṭastadā tena rājñā satyavatīsutaḥ | uvāca paramaprītaḥ kathāṁ saṁsmṛtya cetasā

Suta said: Thus questioned by the king, the son of Satyavati, greatly pleased, recalling the story in his mind, spoke.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.6.16.7)

vyāsa uvāca | śṛṇu pārikṣite vārtāṁ kṣatriyāṇāṁ purātanīm | āścaryakāriṇīṁ samyagviditāṁ ca purā mayā

Vyasa said: Listen, O son of Parikshit, to this ancient and astonishing story of the kshatriyas, well known to me of old.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.6.16.8)

kārtavīryeti nāmnābhūddhaihayaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ | sahasrabāhurbalavānarjuno dharmatatparaḥ

There was a Haihaya lord of the earth named Kartavirya — the mighty, thousand-armed Arjuna, devoted to dharma.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.6.16.9)

dattātreyasya śiṣyo'bhūdavatāro hareriva | siddhaḥ sarvārthadaḥ śākto bhṛgūṇāṁ yājya eva saḥ

He was a disciple of Dattatreya, as though an incarnation of Hari himself — accomplished, a grantor of all desires, mighty, and the very patron of the Bhrigus.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.6.16.10)

yajvā paramadharmiṣṭhaḥ sadā dānaparāyaṇaḥ | dadau vittaṁ bhṛgubhyo'sau kṛtvā yajñānanekaśaḥ

A performer of sacrifices, supremely righteous, ever devoted to giving, he gave wealth to the Bhrigus, having performed many sacrifices.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.6.16.11)

dhaninaste dvijā jātā bhṛgavo nṛpadānataḥ | hayaratnasamṛd|hdhyāḍhyāḥ sañjātāḥ prathitā bhuvi

Through the king's gifts, the brahmin Bhrigus became wealthy, rich with an abundance of horses and jewels, and renowned upon the earth.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.6.16.12)

svaryāte nṛpaśārdūle kārtavīryārjune punaḥ | haihayā nirdhanā jātāḥ kālena mahatā nṛpa

But when that tiger among kings, Kartavirya Arjuna, departed for heaven, the Haihayas, O king, over a long span of time, grew impoverished.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.6.16.13)

dhanakāryaṁ samutpannaṁ haihayānāṁ kadācana | yāciṣṇavo'bhijagmustānbhūgūṁste haihayā nṛpa

On one occasion a need for wealth arose among the Haihayas; those Haihayas, O king, went to the Bhrigus as supplicants.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.6.16.14)

vinayaṁ kṣatriyāḥ kṛtvāpyayācanta dhanaṁ bahu | na daduste'tilobhārtā nāsti nāstītivādinaḥ

The kshatriyas humbly begged for much wealth; but those Bhrigus, overcome by excessive greed, gave nothing, saying only 'there is none, there is none.'

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.6.16.15)

bhūmau ca nidadhuḥ kecidbhṛgavo dhanamuttamam | daduḥ keciddvijātibhyo jñātvā kṣatriyato bhayam

Some of the Bhrigus buried their finest wealth in the ground; others, sensing danger from the kshatriyas, gave it away to other brahmins.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.6.16.16)

kṛtvā sthānāntare dravyaṁ brāhmaṇā bhayavihvalāḥ | tyaktvā''śramānyayuḥ sarve bhṛgavastṛṣṇayānvitāḥ

The brahmins, overwhelmed with fear, having stored their wealth elsewhere, all abandoned their hermitages, the Bhrigus, still gripped by craving for it.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.6.16.17)

yājyāṁśca duḥkhitāndṛṣṭvā na dadurlobhamohitāḥ | palāyitvā gatāḥ sarve giridurgānupāśritāḥ

Seeing their own patrons in distress, still deluded by greed they gave nothing; all fled and took refuge in mountain strongholds.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.6.16.18)

tataste haihayāstāta duḥkhitāḥ kāryagauravāt | bhṛgūṇāmāśramāñjagmurdravyārthaṁ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ

Then, my child, those Haihayas, distressed by the gravity of their need, foremost among kshatriyas, went to the hermitages of the Bhrigus in search of wealth.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.6.16.19)

bhṛgūṁstu nirgatānvīkṣya śūnyāṁstyaktyā gṛhānatha | cakhanurbhūtalaṁ tatra dravyārthaṁ haihayā bhṛśam

Finding that the Bhrigus had departed, leaving their houses empty, the Haihayas dug up the ground there vigorously in search of wealth.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.6.16.20)

khanatādhigataṁ vittaṁ kenacidbhṛguveśmani | dadṛśuḥ kṣatriyāḥ sarve tadvittaṁ śramakarśitāḥ

By digging, they found wealth buried by someone in the house of a Bhrigu; all the kshatriyas, exhausted with the labor, beheld that wealth.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.6.16.21)

yatra yatra samutpannaṁ bhūri dravyaṁ mahītalāt | tadā te pārśvabhāgasthabrāhmaṇānāṁ gṛhāṇyapi

Wherever abundant wealth was found in the ground, the houses of the brahmins living nearby too —

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.6.16.22)

nirbhidya haihayā dravyaṁ dadṛśurdhanalipsayā | brāhmaṇāścukuśaḥ sarve bhītāśca śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ

the Haihayas broke into, searching for wealth out of greed; all the brahmins cried out and, terrified, fled for refuge.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.6.16.23)

aticinvatsu viprāṇāṁ bhavanānniḥsṛtaṁ bahu | nijaghnustāñcharaiḥ kopādvāḍavāñcharaṇāgatān

Seeing much wealth coming out of the brahmins' houses, they slew with arrows, in fury, even the brahmins who were gathering it and had come seeking refuge.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.6.16.24)

yayuste giridurgāṁśca yatra vai bhṛgavaḥ sthitāḥ | āgarbhādanukṛntantaśceruścaiva mahīmimām

They went to the mountain strongholds where the Bhrigus had taken refuge, and roamed this whole earth, cutting down even unborn children in the womb.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.6.16.25)

prāptānprāptānbhṛgūnsarvānnijaghnurniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ | ābālavṛddhānaparānavamanya ca pātakam

Whatever Bhrigu they found, they slew with sharp arrows, from children to the aged, giving no thought to the sin.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.6.16.26)

evamutpāṭyamāneṣu bhārgaveṣu yatastataḥ | hanyurgarbhāṁśca nārīṇāṁ gṛhītvā haihayā bhṛśam

Thus, as the descendants of Bhrigu were being uprooted on every side, the Haihayas, seizing the women, ruthlessly destroyed the children in their wombs as well.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.6.16.27)

rurudustāḥ striyaḥ kāmaṁ kurarya iva duḥkhitāḥ | garbhāśca kṛntitā yāsāṁ kṣatriyaiḥ pāpaniścayaiḥ

Those women, their wombs cut open by kshatriyas bent on sin, wailed piteously, sorrowing like ospreys.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.6.16.28)

anye'pyāhuśca tāndṛptānmunayastīrthavāsinaḥ | muñcantu kṣatriyāḥ krodhaṁ brāhmaṇeṣu bhayāvaham

Other sages, dwelling at the tirthas, said to those arrogant men: 'Let the kshatriyas abandon this terrible anger against brahmins.'

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.6.16.29)

ayuktametadārabdhaṁ bhavadbhiḥ karma garhitam | yadgarbhānbhṛgupatnīnāṁ nihanyuḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ

'This is an unjust and reprehensible deed you have undertaken, that you, foremost of kshatriyas, are destroying the wombs of the Bhrigus' wives.'

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.6.16.30)

atyugrapuṇyapāpānāmihaiva phalamāpnuyāt | tasmājjugupsitaṁ karma tyaktavyaṁ bhūtimicchatā

'The fruit of such intense merit or sin is obtained right here, in this very life; therefore whoever desires prosperity should abandon such a reprehensible deed.'

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.6.16.31)

tānāhurhaihayāḥ kruddhā munīnatha dayāparān | bhavantaḥ sādhavaḥ sarve nārthajñāḥ pāpakarmaṇām

The enraged Haihayas said to those compassionate sages: 'You are all virtuous, but you do not know the true meaning of these wicked deeds!'

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.6.16.32)

ebhirhṛtaṁ dhanaṁ sarvaṁ pūrvajānāṁ mahātmanām | vañcayitvā chalābhijñairmārge pāṭaccarairiva

'These men, skilled in trickery, took away all the wealth of our great-souled ancestors by deceiving them, like highway robbers.'

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.6.16.33)

ete pratārakā dambhāstādṛśā bakavṛttayaḥ | utpanne ca mahākārye prārthitā vinayena te

'These are deceivers, hypocrites of crane-like conduct; and when a great need arose for us, we entreated them with all humility.'

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.6.16.34)

na daduḥ prārthitaṁ viprāḥ pādavṛd|hdhyāpi yācitāḥ | nāstītivādinaḥ stabdhāḥ duḥkhitānvīkṣya yājyakān

'Even when we begged with interest added, those brahmins gave nothing; stubborn, they kept saying "there is none," even seeing their own patrons in distress.'

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.6.16.35)

dhanaṁ prāptaṁ kārtavīryādrakṣitaṁ kena hetunā | na kṛtāḥ kratavaḥ kiṁ tairdānaṁ cārthiṣu bhūriśaḥ

'For what reason did they hoard the wealth received from Kartavirya? Did they not perform sacrifices with it, or give abundant gifts to petitioners?'

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.6.16.36)

na sañcitavyaṁ vipraistu dhanaṁ cāpi kadācana | yaṣṭavyaṁ vidhivaddeyaṁ bhoktavyaṁ ca yathāsukham

'Brahmins ought never to hoard wealth; it should be used for sacrifice as prescribed, given away in gift, and enjoyed as one pleases.'

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.6.16.37)

dravye caurabhayaṁ proktaṁ tathā rājabhayaṁ dvijāḥ | vahnerbhayaṁ mahāghoraṁ tathā dhūrtabhayaṁ mahat

'For wealth, O twice-born, there is said to be the fear of thieves, and likewise the fear of kings; the terrible fear of fire, and the great fear of rogues too.'

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.6.16.38)

yena kenāpyupāyena dhanaṁ tyajati rakṣakam | athavāsau mṛto yāti dravyaṁ tyaktvā hyasadgatim

'By one means or another, wealth abandons its keeper; or else he dies, leaving his riches behind, and goes to an evil state.'

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.6.16.39)

pādavṛd|hdhyā tathāsmābhiḥ prārthitaṁ vinayānvitaiḥ | tathāpi lobhasandigdhairna dattaṁ naḥ purohitaiḥ

'And so we humbly begged even with interest added, yet still our own priests, gripped by suspected greed, gave us nothing.'

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.6.16.40)

dānaṁ bhogastathā nāśo dhanasya gatirīdṛśī | dānabhogau kṛtīnāṁ ca nāśaḥ pāpātmanāṁ kila

'Giving, enjoyment, or loss — this is the fate of wealth; giving and enjoyment belong to the meritorious, while loss belongs indeed to the sinful.'

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.6.16.41)

na dātā na ca yo bhoktā kṛpaṇo guptitatparaḥ | rājñāsau sarvathā daṇḍyo vañcako duḥkhabhāṅnaraḥ

'One who neither gives nor enjoys, the miser intent only on hoarding — he deserves in every way to be punished by the king, a deceiver and a man destined for misery.'

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.6.16.42)

tasmādvayaṁ gurūnetānvañcakānbrāhmaṇādhamān | hantuṁ samudyatāḥ sarve na krodhavyaṁ mahātmabhiḥ

'Therefore we are all resolved to slay these deceitful teachers, the worst of brahmins; great souls such as yourselves ought not to be angry with us for this.'

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.6.16.43)

vyāsa uvāca | ityuktvā hetumadvākyaṁ tānāśvāsya munīnatha | viceruśca vicinvānā bhṛgudārānanekaśaḥ

Vyasa said: Having spoken this reasoned speech and thus reassured the sages, they went about, searching everywhere for the wives of the Bhrigus.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.6.16.44)

bhayārtā bhṛgupatnyastu himavantaṁ dharādharam | prapedire rudantyaśca vepamānāḥ kṛśā bhṛśam

The terrified wives of the Bhrigus, weeping, trembling, and greatly emaciated, fled for refuge to the mountain Himavat.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.6.16.45)

evaṁ te haihayairviprāḥ pīḍitā dhanakāmukaiḥ | nihatāśca yathākāmaṁ saṁrabdhaiḥ pāpakarmabhiḥ

Thus were those brahmins oppressed by the wealth-hungry, enraged, sinful Haihayas, and slain at their will.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.6.16.46)

lobha eva manuṣyāṇāṁ dehasaṁstho mahāripuḥ | sarvaduḥkhākaraḥ prokto duḥkhadaḥ prāṇanāśakaḥ

Greed alone, dwelling within the body of men, is declared to be the great enemy — the source of all sorrow, the bringer of pain, the destroyer of life.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.6.16.47)

sarvapāpasya mūlaṁ hi sarvadā tṛṣṇayānvitaḥ | virodhakṛttrivarṇānāṁ sarvārteḥ kāraṇaṁ tathā

It is ever accompanied by craving, and is the root of all sin; it sows discord among the three classes and is likewise the cause of every affliction.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.6.16.48)

lobhāttyajanti dharmaṁ vai kuladharmaṁ tathaiva hi | mātaraṁ bhrātaraṁ hanti pitaraṁ bāndhavaṁ tathā

Out of greed men abandon dharma, and the dharma of their own family as well; they slay their mother, brother, father, and kinsmen.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.6.16.49)

guruṁ mitraṁ tathā bhāryāṁ putraṁ ca bhaginīṁ tathā | lobhāviṣṭo na kiṁ kuryādakṛtyaṁ pāpamohitaḥ

Their guru, friend, wife, son, and sister too — what forbidden deed would a man possessed by greed and deluded by sin not commit?

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.6.16.50)

krodhātkāmādahaṅkārāllobha eva mahāripuḥ | prāṇāṁstyajati lobhena kiṁ punaḥ syādanāvṛtam

Greater even than anger, desire, and egotism, greed alone is the great enemy; out of greed a man even gives up his life — what, then, would remain untouched by it?

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.6.16.51)

pūrvajāste mahārāja dharmajñāḥ satpathe sthitāḥ | pāṇḍavāḥ kauravāścaiva lobhena nidhanaṁ gatāḥ

O great king, those ancestors, the Pandavas and Kauravas alike, knowers of dharma and established on the righteous path, went to destruction through greed.

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.6.16.52)

yatra bhīṣmaśca droṇaśca kṛpaḥ karṇaśca bāhlikaḥ | bhīmaseno dharbhaputrastathaivārjunakeśavau

There, where Bhishma and Drona, Kripa and Karna and Bahlika, Bhimasena, the son of Dharma (Yudhishthira), and Arjuna and Keshava too were present —

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.6.16.53)

tathāpi yuddhamatyugraṁ kṛtaṁ taiśca parasparam | kuṭumbakadanaṁ bhūri kṛtaṁ lobhāturairiha

even so, they waged an exceedingly terrible war among themselves; a great destruction of their own kinsfolk was brought about here by men tormented with greed.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.6.16.54)

hato droṇo hato bhīṣmastathaiva pāṇḍavātmajāḥ | bhrātaraḥ pitaraḥ putrāḥ sarve vai nihatā raṇe

Drona was slain, Bhishma was slain, and likewise the sons of the Pandavas; brothers, fathers, sons — all indeed were slain in that battle.

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.6.16.55)

tasmāllobhābhibhūtastu kiṁ na kuryānnaraḥ kila | haihayairnihatāḥ sarve bhṛgavaḥ pāpabuddhibhiḥ

Therefore, what would a man overcome by greed not do? All the Bhrigus were slain by the Haihayas, whose minds were bent on sin.
