janamejaya uvāca | kathaṁ tāśca striyaḥ sarvā bhṛgūṇāṁ duḥkhasāgarāt | muktā vaṁśaḥ punasteṣāṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ sthiro'bhavat
Janamejaya said: How were all those wives of the Bhrigus freed from that ocean of sorrow, and how did the lineage of those brahmins become firmly established once more?
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.6.17.2)
haihayaiḥ kiṁ kṛtaṁ kāryaṁ hatvā tānbrāhmaṇānapi | kṣatriyairlobhasaṁyuktaiḥ pāpācārairvadasva tat
After slaying those brahmins, what did the greedy, sinful kshatriya Haihayas do next? Tell me that.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.6.17.3)
na tṛptirasti me brahman pibataste kathāmṛtam | pāvanaṁ sukhadaṁ nṝṇāṁ paraloke phalapradam
O brahmin, I am not satisfied even drinking this nectar-like story of yours, which is purifying, brings happiness, and yields fruit in the world beyond.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.6.17.4)
vyāsa uvāca | śṛṇu rājanpravakṣyāmi kathāṁ pāpapraṇāśinīm | yathā striyastu tā muktā duḥkhāttasmādduratyayāt
Vyasa said: Listen, O king, I shall tell the sin-destroying story of how those women were freed from that insurmountable sorrow.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.6.17.5)
bhṛgupatnyo yadā rājan himavantaṁ giriṁ gatāḥ | bhayatrastā vibhagnāśā haihayaiḥ pīḍitā bhṛśam
When the Bhrigus' wives, O king, greatly oppressed by the Haihayas, terrified and their hopes shattered, had gone to Mount Himavat —
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.6.17.6)
gaurīṁ tatra tu saṁsthāpya mṛṇmayīṁ saritastaṭe | upoṣaṇaparāścakurniścayaṁ maraṇaṁ prati
there, having set up a clay image of Gauri on the bank of a river, they undertook fasting, resolved upon death.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.6.17.7)
svapne gatvā tadā devī prāha tāḥ pramadottamāḥ | yuṣmāsu madhye kasyāścidbhavitā corujaḥ pumān
Then, appearing in a dream, the Goddess said to those excellent women: 'From the thigh of one among you, a man shall be born,'
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.6.17.8)
madaṁśaśaktisambhinnaḥ sa vaḥ kāryaṁ vidhāsyati | ityādiśya parāmbā sā paścādantarhitābhavat
'infused with a portion of my own power, and he will accomplish your task.' Having given this instruction, the Supreme Mother then vanished.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.6.17.9)
jāgṛtāstu tataḥ sarvā mudamāpurvarāṅganāḥ | kācittāsāṁ bhayodvignā kāminī caturā bhṛśam
On waking, all those excellent women were filled with joy; and one among them, agitated with fear yet extremely clever —
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.6.17.10)
dadhāra coruṇaikena garbhaṁ sā kulavṛddhaye | palāyanaparā dṛṣṭā kṣatriyairbrāhmaṇī yadā
bore the child in one thigh, for the increase of her lineage. And when that brahmin woman was seen fleeing by the kshatriyas —
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.6.17.11)
vihvalā tejasā yuktā tadā te dudruvurbhṛśam | gṛhyatāṁ vadhyatāṁ nārī sagarbhā yāti satvarā
agitated yet full of splendor, they gave chase swiftly, crying: 'Seize this pregnant woman quickly, slay her!'
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.6.17.12)
iti bruvantaḥ samprāptāḥ kāminīṁ khaḍgapāṇayaḥ | sā bhayārtā tu tāndṛṣṭvā ruroda samupāgatān
So saying, the sword-bearing kshatriyas closed in on that woman; terrified, seeing them approach, she began to weep.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.6.17.13)
garbhasya rakṣaṇārthaṁ sā cukrośātibhayāturā | rudatīṁ mātaraṁ śrutvā dīnāṁ prāṇavivarjitām
For the protection of her unborn child, she cried out, overcome with fear. Hearing his wretched mother wailing as though lifeless —

nirādhārāṁ krandamānāṁ kṣatriyairbhṛśatāpitām | gṛhītāmiva siṁhena sagarbhāṁ hariṇīṁ yathā
helpless, weeping, greatly tormented by the kshatriyas, like a pregnant doe seized by a lion —
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.6.17.15)
sāśrunetrāṁ vepamānāṁ saṅkrudhya bālakastadā | bhittvoruṁ nirjagāmāśu garbhaḥ sūrya ivāparaḥ
seeing her trembling with tear-filled eyes, the boy, filled with rage, then burst forth at once from her thigh, like a second sun.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.6.17.16)
muṣṇandṛṣṭīḥ kṣatriyāṇāṁ tejasā bālakaḥ śubhaḥ | darśanādbālakasyāśu sarve jātā vilocanāḥ
That auspicious boy, stealing the sight of the kshatriyas with his splendor — at the very sight of him, all of them at once went blind.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.6.17.17)
babhramurgiridurgeṣu janmāndhā iva kṣatriyāḥ | cintitaṁ manasā sarvaiḥ kimetaditi sāmpratam
They wandered among the mountain strongholds as though born blind. All of them wondered in their minds, 'What has just happened?'
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.6.17.18)
sarve cakṣurvihīnā yajjātā sma bāladarśanāt | brāhmaṇyāstu prabhāvo'yaṁ satīvratabalaṁ mahat
'That we all became sightless the instant we saw the boy — this is the great power of that brahmin woman's chastity.'
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.6.17.19)

kṛtāparādhā rambhoru kṣatriyāḥ pāpabuddhayaḥ | darśanāttava tanvaṅgi jātāḥ sarve vilocanāḥ
'O plantain-thighed one, we kshatriyas of sinful mind have committed an offense; O slender-limbed one, by the mere sight of you we have all gone blind.'
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.6.17.23)
mukhaṁ te naiva paśyāmo janmāndhā iva bhāmini | adbhutaṁ te tapo vīryaṁ kiṁ kurmaḥ pāpakāriṇaḥ

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.6.17.24)

kiñcitpraṣṭumihecchāmi saṁśayaṁ vāsavīsuta | haihayāste kathaṁ nāmnā khyātā bhuvi nṛpātmajāḥ
O son of Vasavi, I wish to ask something further — I have a doubt: how did those princes on earth come to be known by the name 'Haihaya'?
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.6.17.47)
yadostu yādavāḥ kāmaṁ bharatādbhāratāstathā | haihayaḥ ko'pi rājābhūtteṣāṁ vaṁśe pratiṣṭhitaḥ
From Yadu came the Yadavas, and from Bharata the Bharatas — was there some king named Haihaya established at the root of their line?
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.6.17.48)
tadahaṁ śrotumicchāmi kāraṇaṁ karuṇānidhe | haihayāste kathaṁ jātāḥ kṣatriyāḥ kena karmaṇā

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.6.17.49)

ramā vīkṣya hayaṁ divyaṁ bhrātaraṁ sāgarodbhavam | rūpeṇa vismitā tasya tasthau stambhitalocanā
Beholding that divine horse — her own brother born of the ocean — Rama (Lakshmi) was astonished at his beauty and stood transfixed, her eyes unmoving.
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.6.17.54)

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.6.17.56)

prekṣamāṇā tadā lakṣmīstaccittā daivayogataḥ | novāca vacanaṁ kiñcitpṛṣṭāpi ca punaḥ punaḥ
Lakshmi, her mind fixed on him by the working of fate, kept gazing at him and, even when asked again and again, said not a word.
Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.6.17.57)
