janamejaya uvāca | saṁśayo'yaṁ mahānatra jātamātraḥ śiśustathā | muktaḥ kena gṛhīto'sāvekākī vijane vane

Janamejaya said: I have a great doubt here — the infant, just born and left alone in a lonely forest, who took him up?

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.6.20.2)

kā gatistasya bālasya jātā satyavatīsuta | vyāghrasiṁhādibhirhiṁsrairgṛhīto nātibālakaḥ

O son of Satyavati, what became of that child? Was so young an infant seized by tigers, lions, or other beasts of prey?

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.6.20.3)

Vyasa said: When Lakshmi and Narayana had just departed from that place, at that very moment a Vidyadhara named Champaka happened to arrive there.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.6.20.4)

vimānavaramārūḍhaḥ kāminyā sahito nṛpa | madanālasayā kāmaṁ krīḍamāno yadṛcchayā

O king, mounted on an excellent celestial chariot, together with his beloved Madanalasa, wandering there freely, he had come.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.6.20.5)

vilokya taṁ śiśuṁ bhūmāvekākinamanuttamam | devaputrapratīkāśaṁ ramamāṇaṁ yathāsukham

Seeing that infant lying alone on the ground, matchless, resembling a son of the gods, playing happily —

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.6.20.6)

vimānāttarasottīrya campakastaṁ śiśu javāt | jagrāha ca mudaṁ prāpa nidhiṁ prāpya yathādhanaḥ

Champaka, quickly descending from his chariot, swiftly took up that infant, and rejoiced as a poor man rejoices on finding a treasure.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.6.20.7)

gṛhītvā campakaḥ prādāddevyai taṁ madanopamam | madanālasāyai taṁ bālaṁ jātamātraṁ manoharam

Taking up that enchanting, newly-born child, resembling Kama himself, Champaka gave him to his beloved Madanalasa.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.6.20.8)

sā gṛhītvā śiśuṁ premṇā saromāñcā savismayā | mukhaṁ cucumba bālasya kṛtvā tu hṛdaye bhṛśam

She, taking the infant with love, her hair standing on end in astonishment, pressed him to her heart and kissed his face again and again.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.6.20.9)

āliṅgitaścumbitaśca tayāsau prītipūrvakam | utsaṅge ca kṛtastanvyā putrabhāvena bhārata

O Bharata, embraced and kissed lovingly by that slender woman, he was placed on her lap with the feeling of a mother for her son.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.6.20.10)

kasyāyaṁ bālakaḥ kānta tyaktaḥ kena ca kānane | putro'yaṁ mama devena dattastryambakapāṇinā

'My beloved, whose child is this, and by whom was he abandoned in the forest? Let this child, given by the three-eyed god, be my own son.'

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.6.20.12)

Champaka said: 'My beloved, let us go at once and ask the all-knowing Shakra, whether this infant belongs to a god, a demon, or a gandharva.'

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.6.20.13)

tenājñaptaḥ kariṣyāmi putraṁ prāptaṁ vanādamum | apṛṣṭvā naiva kartavyaṁ kāryaṁ kiñcinmayā dhruvam

'Only at his command shall I make this child, found in the forest, my son; without first asking, I must certainly do nothing here.'

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.6.20.14)

ityuktvā tāṁ gṛhītvā taṁ vimānenātha campakaḥ | yayau śakrapuraṁ tūrṇaṁ harṣeṇotphullalocanaḥ

Having said this, Champaka, taking her and the child, went swiftly by chariot to the city of Shakra, his eyes bright with joy.

praṇamya pādayoḥ prītyā campakastu śacīpatim | nivedya bālakaṁ prāha kṛtāñjalipuṭaḥ sthitaḥ

Champaka, having lovingly bowed at the feet of Shachi's husband, presented the child to him and, standing with joined palms, said —

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.6.20.16)

devadeva mayā labdhastīrthe paramapāvane | kālindītamasāsaṅge bālako'yaṁ smaraprabhaḥ

'O god of gods, this child, radiant as Kama, was found by me at a most sacred tirtha, at the confluence of the Kalindi and the Tamasa.'

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.6.20.17)

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.6.20.18)

atīva sundaro bālaḥ priyāyā vallabhaḥ sutaḥ | kṛtrimastu sutaḥ prokto dharmaśāstreṣu sarvathā

'The child is exceedingly beautiful, and dear to my beloved as her own son; in the scriptures of dharma such a son is always called a "made" (adopted) son.'

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.6.20.19)

indra uvāca | putro'yaṁ vāsudevasya vājirūpadharasya ha | haihayo'yaṁ mahābhāga lakṣmyāṁ jātaḥ parantapaḥ

Indra said: 'O greatly fortunate one, this is the son of Vasudeva, who bore the form of a horse; this scorcher of foes, forefather of the Haihayas, was born of Lakshmi.'

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.6.20.20)

utpādito bhagavatā kāryārthaṁ kila bālakaḥ | dātuṁ nṛpataye nūnaṁ yayātitanayāya ca

'This child was begotten by the Lord for a particular purpose — surely to be given to a king, a son of Yayati.'

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.6.20.21)

'Sent by Hari, that most righteous king will come this very day, in search of a son, to that lovely tirtha.'

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.6.20.22)

tāvattvaṁ gaccha tatraiva gṛhītvā bālakaṁ śubham | yāvanna yāti nṛpatirgrahītuṁ hariṇeritaḥ

'Meanwhile go there yourself, taking this auspicious child, before that king, sent by Hari, arrives to receive him.'

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.6.20.23)

gatvā tatra vimuñcainaṁ vilambaṁ mā kṛthā vara | adṛṣṭvā bālakaṁ rājā duḥkhitaśca bhaviṣyati

'Having gone there, leave him behind, O excellent one; make no delay. If the king does not find the child, he will be sorrowful.'

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.6.20.24)

tasmāccampaka muñcainaṁ rājā prāpnotu putrakam | ekavīreti nāmnāyaṁ khyātaḥ syāt pṛthivītale

'Therefore, Champaka, leave him there so the king may obtain his son; let him become known on earth by the name Ekavira.'

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.6.20.25)

vyāsa uvāca | iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā campakastvarayānvitaḥ | jagāma putramādāya sthale tasminmahīpate

Vyasa said: Hearing his words, O king, Champaka, filled with haste, went, taking the child, to that very place.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.6.20.26)

mumoca bālakaṁ tatra yatra pūrvaṁ sthito hyabhūt | āruhya svavimānaṁ tu yayau svāśramamaṇḍalam

He set the child down right where he had been before, and, boarding his own chariot, returned to his own hermitage.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.6.20.27)

tadaiva kamalākānto lakṣmyā saha jagadguruḥ | vimānavaramārūḍho jagāma nṛpatiṁ prati

At that very moment, the beloved of Kamala, teacher of the universe, together with Lakshmi, mounted on an excellent chariot, went toward the king.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.6.20.28)

dṛṣṭastadā tena nṛpeṇa viṣṇuḥ samuttaraṁstatra vimānamukhyāt | jaharṣa rājā haridarśanena papāta bhūmau khalu daṇḍavacca

Then that king saw Vishnu descending from his excellent chariot; the king rejoiced at the sight of Hari and fell prostrate on the ground like a staff.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.6.20.29)

'Rise, my child,' said Hari, comforting his own devotee fallen on the ground; and he, too, eager, his voice unlocked by devotion, began to praise Vasudeva standing before him.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.6.20.30)

devādhidevākhilalokanātha kṛpānidhe lokaguro rameśa | mandasya me te kila darśanaṁ yatsudurlabhaṁ yogijanairalabhyam

'O god of gods, lord of all worlds, ocean of compassion, teacher of the world, lord of Rama! That I, so dull-witted, should receive this vision of you, so hard to attain, unattainable even by yogis —'

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.6.20.31)

ye niḥspṛhāste viṣayairapetāsteṣāṁ tvadīyaṁ khalu darśanaṁ syāt | āśāparo'haṁ bhagavannananta yogyo na te darśane devadeva

'Only those free of longing, detached from worldly objects, indeed attain your vision. O Lord, O infinite one, I am full of desire; O god of gods, I am unworthy of your sight.'

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.6.20.32)

iti stutastena nṛpeṇa viṣṇustamāha vākyena sudhāmayena | vṛṇīṣva rājan manasepsitaṁ te dadāmi tuṣṭastapasā taveti

Thus praised by the king, Vishnu spoke to him in nectar-sweet words: 'Choose, O king, whatever your heart desires; pleased by your austerity, I grant it.'

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.6.20.33)

tato nṛpastaṁ praṇipatya pādayoḥ provāca viṣṇuṁ purataḥ sthitaṁ ca | tapastu taptaṁ hi mayā sutārthe putraṁ dadasvātmasamaṁ murāre

Then the king, bowing at his feet, said to Vishnu standing before him: 'O foe of Mura, I performed this austerity desiring a son; grant me a son equal to yourself.'

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.6.20.34)

Hearing the king's request, the Primal God spoke to him this unfailing word: 'O son of Yayati, go to that confluence-tirtha of the Kalindi and the Tamasa —'

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.6.20.35)

mayādya putrastu yathepsitaste tatraiva mukto'styamitaprabhāvaḥ | lakṣmyāḥ prasūto mama vīryajaśca kṛtastavārthe'tha gṛhāṇa rājan

'a son as you desired, of boundless power, has been left there by me this very day — born of Lakshmi, arisen from my own vital essence, made for your sake alone. O king, take him.'

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.6.20.36)

śrutvā harervākyamatīva mṛṣṭaṁ santuṣṭacittaḥ prababhūva rājā | haristu dattveti varaṁ jagāma vaikuṇṭhalokaṁ ramayā yutaśca

Hearing this most gracious word of Hari, the king's heart became greatly content; and Hari, having granted this boon, departed for Vaikuntha together with Rama.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.6.20.37)

When Hari had departed, that son of Yayati, having heard Janardana's words, filled with love, went at once by unhindered chariot to the place where the son was.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.6.20.38)

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.6.20.39)

taṁ vīkṣya putraṁ madanasvarūpaṁ nārāyaṇāṁśaṁ kamalāprasūtam | hariprabhāvaṁ harivarmanāmā harṣapraphullānanapaṅkajo'bhūt

Seeing that son, of the very form of Kama, a portion of Narayana, born of Kamala, bearing Hari's own splendor — Harivarma's lotus face blossomed with joy.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.6.20.40)

Swiftly taking him up with his two lotus hands, he sank into an ocean of love; smelling the top of his head, filled with joy, the king embraced his son and rejoiced.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.6.20.41)

Gazing at his exceedingly charming face, his throat choked with tears, he said to him: 'You were given by the god Janardana, and by your mother too, out of fear of the sorrow of being without a son.'

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.6.20.42)

taptaṁ mayā putra tapastavārthe suduṣkaraṁ varṣaśataṁ ca pūrṇam | tenaiva tuṣṭena ramāpriyeṇa datto'si saṁsārasukhodayāya

'My son, for your sake I performed the most difficult austerity, for a full hundred years; and by that same Vishnu, pleased and beloved of Rama, you have been given, for the arising of worldly happiness.'

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.6.20.43)

'Your mother Rama, leaving you, her own son, for my sake, has gone off again with Hari. Blessed indeed is she, whose face will beam with joy, holding you laughing as her son on her lap.'

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.6.20.44)

tvameva saṁsārasamudranaukārūpaḥ kṛtaḥ putra lakṣmīdhareṇa | ityevamuktvā nṛpatiḥ sutaṁ taṁ mudā samādāya yayau gṛhāya

'My son, you yourself have been made, by the bearer of Lakshmi, into a very boat to cross the ocean of worldly existence.' Having spoken thus, the king, joyfully taking up his son, set off for home.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.6.20.45)

He gave gifts to the petitioners as well; many songs and instruments resounded. Having celebrated for his son, the king gave him the name Ekavira, which became renowned.

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.6.20.53)

sukhaṁ ca samprāpya mudānvito'sau nananda devādhipatulyavīryaḥ | putraṁ hare rūpaguṇānurūpaṁ samprāpya vaṁśasya ṛṇācca muktaḥ

Attaining happiness and filled with joy, that king of valor equal to the lord of the gods rejoiced; having obtained a son of Hari's own form and virtues, he became free of the debt owed to his lineage.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.6.20.54)

iti sakalasurāṇāmīśvareṇārpitaṁ taṁ sakalaguṇagaṇāḍhyaṁ putramāsādya rājā | vividhasukhavinodairbhāryayā sevyamāno vyaharata nijagehe śakratulyapratāpaḥ

Thus, having obtained that son — bestowed by the Lord of all the gods, rich with the whole array of virtues — the king, of splendor equal to Indra, attended by his queen, passed his time in his own home amid various pleasures and delights.
