Chapter 3All chaptersChapter 5

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.6.4.1)

vyāsa uvāca | nirgatāste parāvṛttāstapovighnakarāḥ surāḥ | nirāśāḥ kāryasaṁsid|hdhyai taṁ dṛṣṭvā dṛḍhacetasam

Vyasa said: The gods who had gone to disturb his austerity turned back, giving up all hope of success, seeing how firm and unwavering his mind remained.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.6.4.2)

jāte varṣaśate pūrṇe brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ | tatrājagāma tarasā haṁsārūḍhaścaturmukhaḥ

When a full hundred years had passed, Brahma, grandfather of all the worlds, four-faced, came swiftly to that place, mounted upon his swan.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.6.4.3)

āgatya tamuvācedaṁ tvaṣṭṭaputra sukhī bhava | tyaktvā dhyānaṁ varaṁ brūhi dadāmi tava vāñchitam

Arriving there, he spoke to him: 'O son of Tvashtri, be at peace. Set aside your meditation and ask for a boon — I shall grant whatever your heart desires.'

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.6.4.4)

tapasā te'dya tuṣṭo'smi tvāṁ dṛṣṭvā cātikarśitam | varaṁ varaya bhadraṁ te mano'bhilaṣitaṁ tava

'I am pleased today with your austerity, seeing you grown so gaunt. Choose your boon — may good come to you — whatever your heart longs for.'

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.6.4.5)

vyāsa uvāca | vṛtrastadātiviśadāṁ purato niśamya vācaṁ sudhāsamarasāṁ jagadekakartuḥ | santyajya yogakalanāṁ sahasodatiṣṭha\- tsañjātaharṣanayanāśrukalākalāpaḥ

Vyasa said: Vritra, hearing before him that exceedingly clear voice, sweet as nectar, of the sole creator of the world, at once abandoned his yogic absorption and rose up, his eyes brimming with tears of joy.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.6.4.6)

pādau praṇamya śirasā praṇayādvidhātu\- rbaddhāñjaliḥ purata eva samāsasāda | provāca taṁ suvaradaṁ tapasā prasannaṁ premṇātigadgadagirā vinayena namraḥ

Bowing his head affectionately at the creator's feet, with joined palms he came right before him, and, humbled and reverent, addressed that great giver of boons, pleased by his austerity, in a voice choked with love.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.6.4.7)

prāptaṁ mayā sakaladevapadaṁ prabho'dya yaddarśanaṁ tava sudurlabhamāśu jātam | vāñchāsti nātha manasi pravaṇe durāpā tāṁ prabravīmi kamalāsana vetsi bhāvam

'O lord, I have today attained the very status of all the gods, since your darshan — so exceedingly rare — has swiftly come to me. There is a desire in my devoted heart, my lord, hard to attain; I shall speak it to you, O lotus-seated one — though you already know my inmost feeling.'

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.6.4.8)

mṛtyuśca mā bhavatu me kila lohakāṣṭha\- śuṣkārdravaṁśanicayairaparaiśca śastraiḥ | vṛddhi prayātu mama vīryamatīva yuddhe yasmādbhavāmi sabalairamarairajeyaḥ

'Let death never come to me from iron, from wood, from heaps of dry or wet bamboo, or from any other weapon; let my valor grow ever greater in battle, so that I become unconquerable even by the immortals with all their armies.'

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.6.4.9)

vyāsa uvāca | itthaṁ samprārthito brahmā tamāha prahasanniva | uttiṣṭha gaccha bhadraṁ te vāñchitaṁ saphalaṁ sadā

Vyasa said: Thus entreated, Brahma, smiling as it were, said to him: 'Rise, go forth; may good come to you — your desire shall always be fulfilled.'

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.6.4.10)

'Neither by anything dry, nor wet, nor by stone, nor by wood shall your death come — this I speak in truth.'

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.6.4.11)

iti dattvā varaṁ brahmā jagāma bhuvanaṁ param | vṛtrastu taṁ varaṁ labdhā muditaḥ svagṛhaṁ yayau

Having granted this boon, Brahma returned to his own supreme realm; and Vritra, having received that boon, went joyfully back to his home.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.6.4.12)

śaśaṁsa pituragre tadvaradānaṁ mahāmatiḥ | tvaṣṭā tu muditaḥ prāptaṁ putraṁ prāptavaraṁ tadā

The wise one related the granting of the boon before his father; and Tvashtri, delighted, welcomed his son, who had now obtained his boon.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.6.4.13)

svasti te'stu mahābhāga jahi śakraṁ ripuṁ mama | hatvāgaccha triśiraso hantāraṁ pāpasaṁyutam

'May all be well with you, O greatly fortunate one — slay Shakra, my enemy. Having killed the sin-laden slayer of Trishira, then return.'

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.6.4.14)

bhava tvaṁ tridaśādhīśaḥ samprāpya vijayaṁ raṇe | mamādhiṁ chindhi vipulaṁ putranāśasamudbhavam

'Attain victory in battle and become lord of the gods yourself; cut away this vast anguish of mine, born from the loss of my son.'

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.6.4.15)

jīvato vākyakaraṇātkṣayāhe bhūribhojanāt | gayāyāṁ piṇḍadānācca tribhiḥ putrasya putratā

'A son's true sonship is proven by three things: obeying his living father's word, offering a generous feast on the death-anniversary rite, and giving the funeral cake at Gaya.'

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.6.4.16)

tasmātputra mamātyarthaṁ duḥkhaṁ nāśitumarhasi | triśirā mama cittāttu nāpasarpati karhicit

'Therefore, my son, it falls to you to put an end to my overwhelming grief; Trishira never once departs from my heart.'

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.6.4.17)

suśīlaḥ satyavādī ca tāpaso vedavittamaḥ | aparādhaṁ vinā tena nihataḥ pāpabuddhinā

'Gentle in nature, truthful, an ascetic, most learned in the Vedas — without any fault of his own, he was slain by that one of sinful mind.'

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.6.4.18)

vyāsa uvāca | iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā vṛtraḥ paramadurjayaḥ | rathamāruhya tarasā nirjagāma piturgṛhāt

Vyasa said: Hearing these words of his father, the utterly unconquerable Vritra mounted his chariot and swiftly set out from his father's house.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.6.4.19)

raṇadundubhinirghoṣaṁ śaṅkhanādaṁ mahābalam | kārayitvā prayāṇaṁ sa cakāra madagarvitaḥ

Causing war-drums to thunder and conches to blare, that mighty and proud one set out on his march.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.6.4.20)

niryayau nayasaṁyuktaḥ sevakāniti saṁvadan | hatvā śakraṁ grahīṣyāmi surarājyamakaṇṭakam

Wise in policy, he marched forth, telling his servants: 'Having slain Shakra, I shall seize the kingship of the gods, free of every thorn.'

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.6.4.21)

ityuktvā nirjagāmāśu svasainyaparivāritaḥ | mahatā sainyanādena bhīṣayannamarāvatīm

Having spoken thus, he swiftly set out, surrounded by his own army, terrifying Amaravati, the city of the immortals, with the mighty roar of his host.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.6.4.22)

tamāgacchantamājñāya turāṣāḍapi satvaraḥ | senodyogaṁ bhayatrastaḥ kārayāmāsa bhārata

Learning of his approach, Turashad (Indra) too, trembling with fear, quickly had his army mobilized, O descendant of Bharata.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.6.4.23)

sarvānāhūya tarasā lokapālānarindamaḥ | yuddhārthaṁ prerayansarvānvyarocata mahādyutiḥ

That subduer of enemies swiftly summoned all the guardians of the world; sending them all out to battle, he shone forth in his great splendor.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.6.4.24)

gṛdhranvyūhaṁ tataḥ kṛtvā saṁsthitaḥ pākaśāsanaḥ | tatrājagāma vegāttu vṛtraḥ parabalārdanaḥ

Then Pakashasana, having arrayed his forces in the 'vulture' formation, took his stand; and there Vritra, crusher of the enemy's army, arrived with great speed.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.6.4.25)

devadānavayostāvatsaṅgrāmastumulo'bhavat | vṛtravāsavayoḥ saṅkhye manasā vijayaiṣiṇoḥ

Then a tumultuous battle broke out between the gods and the danavas — between Vritra and Vasava, each of them longing in his heart for victory.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.6.4.26)

evaṁ parasparaṁ yuddhe sandīpte bhayade bhṛśam | ākūtaṁ devatāḥ prāpurdaityāśca paramāṁ mudam

As this mutual battle blazed forth, exceedingly fearsome, the gods grew troubled in mind, while the daityas felt supreme delight.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.6.4.27)

tomarairbhindipālaiśca khaḍgaiḥ paraśupaṭṭiśaiḥ | jaghnuḥ parasparaṁ devadaityā svasvavarāyudhaiḥ

With lances, javelins, swords, axes, and spear-staves, the gods and daityas struck at one another, each wielding his own finest weapons.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.6.4.28)

evaṁ yuddhe vartamāne dāruṇe lomaharṣaṇe | śakraṁ jagrāha sahasā vṛtraḥ krodhasamanvitaḥ

As this fierce, hair-raising battle raged on, Vritra, overcome with fury, suddenly seized hold of Shakra.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.6.4.29)

apāvṛtya mukhe kṣiptvā sthito vṛtraḥ śatakratum | mudito'bhūnmahārāja pūrvavairamanusmaran

Opening his mouth wide and casting Shatakratu (Indra) into it, Vritra stood there, rejoicing, O great king, as he recalled their old enmity.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.6.4.30)

śakre graste'tha vṛtreṇa sambhrāntā nirjarāstadā | cukruśaḥ paramārtāste hā śakreti muhurmuhuḥ

When Shakra was swallowed by Vritra, the immortals were thrown into confusion, and in utmost distress they cried out again and again, 'Alas, Shakra! Alas, Shakra!'

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.6.4.31)

apāvṛtaṁ mukhe śakraṁ jñātvā sarve divaukasaḥ | bṛhaspatiṁ praṇamyocurdīnā vyathitacetasaḥ

Learning that Shakra had been swallowed into his mouth, all the dwellers of heaven, wretched and anguished at heart, bowed before Brihaspati and spoke.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.6.4.32)

kiṁ kartavyaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha tvamasmākaṁ guruḥ paraḥ | śakro grastastu vṛtreṇa rakṣito devatāntaraiḥ

'What must we do now, O best of brahmins? You alone are our highest teacher. Shakra has been swallowed by Vritra — he must somehow be rescued by the rest of us gods.'

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.6.4.33)

vinā śakreṇa kiṁ kurmaḥ sarve hīnaparākramāḥ | abhicāraṁ kuru vibho satvaraḥ śakramuktaye

'Without Shakra, what can we do, robbed as we all are of our valor? Perform some rite of sorcery, O lord, quickly, to secure Shakra's release.'

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.6.4.34)

bṛhaspatiruvāca | kiṁ kartavyaṁ surāḥ kṣipto mukhamadhye'sti vāsavaḥ | vṛtreṇotsādito jīvannasti koṣṭhāntare ripoḥ

Brihaspati said: 'What can be done, O gods? Vasava has been cast into his mouth; overthrown by Vritra, he still lives, but now trapped inside the belly of his enemy.'

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.6.4.35)

vyāsa uvāca | devāścintāturāḥ sarve turāsāhaṁ tathākṛtam | dṛṣṭvā vimṛśya tarasā cakruryatnaṁ vimuktaye

Vyasa said: Seeing Turashad (Indra) reduced to such a state, all the gods, filled with anxiety, quickly deliberated and set about making efforts for his release.

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.6.4.36)

They created the powerful being Jrimbhika, the goddess of yawning, to destroy the enemy's hold; made to yawn by her power, Vritra's mouth then opened wide.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.6.4.37)

vijṛmbhamāṇasya tato vṛtrasyāsyādavāpatat | svānyaṅgānyapi saṅkṣipya niṣkrānto balasūdanaḥ

As Vritra yawned wide, Balasudana (Indra), drawing his limbs close together, slipped out and escaped from his mouth.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.6.4.38)

tataḥ prabhṛti lokeṣu jṛmbhikā prāṇisaṁsthitā | jahṛṣuśca surāḥ sarve śakraṁ dṛṣṭvā vinirgatam

From that time on, this power of yawning has resided in living beings throughout the worlds; and all the gods rejoiced to see Shakra emerge unharmed.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.6.4.39)

tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṁ tayorlokabhayapradam | varṣāṇāmayutaṁ yāvaddāruṇaṁ lomaharṣaṇam

Then a battle broke out once more between the two of them, terrifying to all the worlds, fierce and hair-raising, and it lasted ten thousand years.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.6.4.40)

ekataśca surāḥ sarve yuddhāya samupasthitāḥ | ekato balavāṁstvāṣṭraḥ saṅgrāme samavartata

On one side stood all the gods, gathered for battle; on the other, the mighty son of Tvashtri stood engaged in that combat alone.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.6.4.41)

yadā vyavardhata raṇe vṛtro varamadāvṛtaḥ | parājitastadā śakrastejasā tasya dharṣitaḥ

As Vritra, intoxicated with the pride of his boon, grew ever mightier in the battle, Shakra was overwhelmed by his splendor and defeated.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.6.4.42)

vivyathe maghavā yuddhe tataḥ prāpya parājayam | viṣādamagamandevā dṛṣṭvā śakraṁ parājitam

Maghavan, having thus suffered defeat in battle, was thrown into distress; and the gods fell into despair at the sight of Shakra vanquished.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.6.4.43)

jagmustyaktvā raṇaṁ sarve devā indrapurogamāḥ | gṛhītaṁ devasadanaṁ vṛtreṇāgatya raṁhasā

All the gods, with Indra at their head, abandoned the battlefield and fled; and Vritra, arriving with great speed, seized the very abode of the gods.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.6.4.44)

devodyānānisarvāṇi bhuṅkte'sau dānavo balāt | airāvato'pi daityena gṛhīto'sau gajottamaḥ

That danava now took forceful possession of all the gardens of the gods; even Airavata, the finest of elephants, was seized by that daitya.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.6.4.45)

vimānāni ca sarvāṇi gṛhītāni viśāmpate | uccaiḥśravā hayavaro jātastasya vaśe tadā

All the aerial chariots too, O lord of men, were seized by him; and Uccaihshravas, the finest of horses, likewise fell under his sway.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.6.4.46)

kāmadhenuḥ pārijāto gaṇaścāpsarasāṁ tathā | gṛhītaṁ ratnamātraṁ tu tena tvaṣṭṭasutena ha

Kamadhenu, the Parijata tree, and the host of apsarases as well — every treasure without exception was seized by that son of Tvashtri.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.6.4.47)

sthānabhraṣṭāḥ surāḥ sarve giridurgeṣu saṁsthitāḥ | duḥkhamāpuḥ paribhraṣṭā yajñabhāgātsurālayāt

Driven from their own abode, all the gods took shelter in mountain strongholds; deprived both of their sacrificial shares and their heavenly home, they fell into sorrow.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.6.4.48)

vṛtraḥ surapadaṁ prāpya babhūva madagarvitaḥ | tvaṣṭātīva sukhaṁ prāpya mumoda sutasaṁyutaḥ

Vritra, having gained the very throne of the gods, grew intoxicated with pride; and Tvashtri, filled with utmost happiness, rejoiced together with his son.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.6.4.49)

amantrayanhitaṁ devā munibhiḥ saha bhārata | kiṁ kartavyamiti prāpte vicintya bhayamohitāḥ

The gods, O descendant of Bharata, took counsel together with the sages on what course would serve them, deliberating, bewildered by fear, on what was now to be done.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.6.4.50)

jagmuḥ kailāsamacalaṁ surāḥ śakrasamanvitāḥ | mahādevaṁ praṇamyocuḥ prahvāḥ prāñjalayo bhṛśam

The gods, together with Shakra, went to Mount Kailasa; bowing low before Mahadeva, deeply humbled, with joined palms, they spoke.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.6.4.51)

devadeva mahādeva kṛpāsindho maheśvara | rakṣāsmānbhayabhītāṁstu vṛtreṇātiparājitān

'O god of gods, Mahadeva, ocean of compassion, great lord — protect us, terrified with fear, utterly vanquished as we are by Vritra.'

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.6.4.52)

gṛhītaṁ devasadanaṁ tena deva balīyasā | kiṁ kartavyamataḥ śambho brūhi satyaṁ śivādya naḥ

'Our very dwelling, O god, has been seized by that far mightier one. What then must we do now, O Shambhu? Tell us the truth this day, O Shiva.'

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.6.4.53)

kiṁ kurmaḥ kva ca gacchāmaḥ sthānabhraṣṭā maheśvara | duḥkhasya nādhigacchāmo vināśopāyamīśvara

'What shall we do, and where shall we go, driven as we are from our own place, O great lord? We can find no means, O Ishvara, to bring this sorrow to an end.'

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.6.4.54)

sāhāyyaṁ kuru bhūteśa vyathitāḥ sma kṛpānidhe | vṛtraṁ jahi madotsiktaṁ varadānabalādvibho

'Grant us your help, O lord of all beings, for we are in deep distress, O treasury of compassion; slay Vritra, intoxicated with pride from the strength of his boon, O lord.'

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.6.4.55)
