They praised her — the sustainer of the worlds, the one who performs both creation and dissolution, the mother who fulfills her devotees' desires, the destroyer of the afflictions of worldly existence.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.6.5.34)

The gods said: 'O Goddess, be gracious, protect the gods, tormented and afflicted in battle by Vritrasura. O you ever intent on ending the suffering of the wretched, O supreme truth itself — we have come, as always, for refuge to your lotus feet.'

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.6.5.35)

'You are the mother of this entire universe; protect us, fallen into deep distress like your own sons, in this crisis brought upon us by our enemy. O Mother, nothing in the three worlds is hidden from you — why then do you disregard the gods, tormented as we are by this asura?'

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.6.5.36)

'This entire threefold universe has been ordained by you alone; Brahma, Hari, and Pashupati themselves arise from your own will. They perform every task, yet none of them is independent — it is only by the movement of your brow that they play as they wish.'

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.6.5.37)

'A mother protects her wretched children even when their fault stands openly exposed — this very custom was fashioned by you yourself. Then why, O Goddess, ocean of the essence of compassion, do you not protect us, who are without fault and have taken refuge at your feet?'

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.6.5.38)

'If you think, "These beings, having gained their rank by worshipping my feet, have now abandoned devotion, grown greedy for wealth and easy pleasure, and so no longer merit my glance" — even then, O mother, such conduct toward the very child one has borne is nowhere to be seen.'

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.6.5.39)

doṣo na no'tra janani pratibhāti citte yatte vihāya bhajanaṁ vibhave nimagnāḥ | mohastvayā viracitaḥ prabhavatyasau na\- stasmātsvabhāvakaruṇe dayase kathaṁ na

'We see no fault in our own hearts, O mother, in having abandoned devotion to you and become absorbed in worldly splendor — for this very delusion was fashioned by you, and it has simply overpowered us. Therefore, O you who are compassionate by your very nature, why do you not show us mercy?'

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.6.5.40)

'Before this, O mother, it was you who slew in battle, for our sake, the mightiest lord of the daityas, who had taken the form of a buffalo and brought terror to every world — O mother, why then do you not likewise sweep away this terrifying Vritra?'

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.6.5.41)

'In the same way, the exceedingly powerful Shumbha and his younger brother Nishumbha, those two brothers, were slain by you, along with their followers. So too, O merciful one, slay wicked, mighty Vritra — bewilder that intoxicated one so that he is undone.'

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.6.5.42)

'O mother, protect this day the gods, so grievously tormented by the asura and overwhelmed with fear. There is no other in all the worlds who removes the suffering of the gods, who could, by his own power, burn away this whole web of affliction.'

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.6.5.43)

'O Bhavani, even if your compassion is known to extend to Vritra himself, still slay this wicked one, the cause of suffering to all people, without delay. Redeem him from sin, purifying him with your arrows — otherwise that evil-minded one will surely sink into darkness.'

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.6.5.44)

'Those enemies of the gods whom you slew in battle with your arrows and sent to the abode of the gods were themselves purified. O merciful one, are not even enemies saved thereby from the fear of falling into hell? Then why do you not likewise destroy Vritra?'

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.6.5.45)

jānīmahe ripurasau tava sevako na prāyeṇa pīḍayati naḥ kila pāpabuddhiḥ | yastāvakastviha bhavedamarānasau kiṁ tvatpādapaṅkajaratānnanu pīḍayedvā

'We know this enemy is not your servant; that sinful-minded one torments only us. But could one who truly belongs to you ever torment the immortals devoted to your very lotus feet?'

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.6.5.46)

'How shall we perform your worship today, O mother, when even the flowers we would offer are themselves your own creation? We ourselves, the mantras, and everything else are but forms of the supreme Shakti; therefore, O Bhavani, we simply bow low at your feet.'

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.6.5.47)

'Blessed indeed are those humans who worship with devotion your lotus feet — a very boat upon the waters of the ocean of existence — feet that even yogis, seeking liberation and free from passion, change, and delusion, ever hold in constant remembrance.'

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.6.5.48)

'Those who perform the sacrifice, though learned in all the Vedas, surely remember you constantly at the moment of oblation — as Svaha, who satisfies the lords of the immortals, and again as Svadha, the very cause of satisfaction for the host of ancestors.'

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.6.5.49)

'You are intelligence, you are radiance, you are also the renowned peace itself; you alone are the understanding that grants men clarity of purpose. Having fashioned all the wealth in these three worlds, you alone ever bestow it, out of compassion, upon those who worship you.'

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.6.5.50)

vyāsa uvāca | evaṁ stutā surairdevī pratyakṣā sābhavattadā | cārurūpadharā tanvī sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā

Vyasa said: Thus praised by the gods, the Goddess then appeared visibly before them — of lovely form, slender, adorned with every ornament.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.6.5.51)

pāśāṅkuśavarābhītilasadbāhucatuṣṭayā | raṇatkiṅkiṇikājālarasanābaddhasatkaṭiḥ

In her four shining arms she held the noose, the goad, and the gestures of boon-granting and fearlessness; her lovely waist was girdled with a chain of tinkling bells.

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.6.5.52)

kalakaṇṭhīravā kāntā kvaṇatkaṅkaṇanūpurā | candrakhaṇḍasamābaddharatnamaulivirājitā

Lovely and gentle, her voice sweet as a cuckoo's, her bracelets and anklets tinkling softly, her jeweled crown resplendent, bound with a crescent of the moon.

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.6.5.53)

mandasmitāravindāsyā netratrayavibhūṣitā | pārijātaprasūnācchanālavarṇasamaprabhā

Her lotus-like face bore a gentle smile, adorned with three eyes; her radiance was as clear and bright as the stem of a parijata blossom.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.6.5.54)

raktāmbaraparīdhānā raktacandanacarcitā | prasādasumukhī devī karuṇārasasāgarā

Clothed in red garments and anointed with red sandalwood paste, the Goddess, her face full of grace, was an ocean of the very essence of compassion.

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.6.5.55)

sarvaśṛṅgāraveṣāḍhyā sarvadvaitāraṇiḥ parā | sarvajñā sarvakartrī ca sarvādhiṣṭhānarūpiṇī

Richly adorned with every ornament of beauty, the supreme one who carries all beings across duality; all-knowing, the doer of all things, the very ground and support of all existence.

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.6.5.56)

sarvavedāntasaṁsiddhā saccidānandarūpiṇī | praṇemustāṁ samālokya surā devīṁ puraḥsthitām

Established as the very culmination of all Vedanta, embodying being, consciousness, and bliss; beholding her standing there before them, the gods bowed down in worship.

Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.6.5.57)

tānāha praṇatānambā kiṁ vaḥ kāryaṁ bruvantu mām | devā ūcuḥ | mohayainaṁ ripuṁ vṛtraṁ devānāmatiduḥkhadam

The Mother said to them, bowed low: 'What is your task? Tell me.' The gods said: 'Delude this enemy Vritra, who brings such terrible suffering upon the gods.'

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.6.5.58)

yathā viśvasate devāṁstathā kuru vimohitam | āyudhe ca balaṁ dehi hataḥ syādyena vā ripuḥ

'Delude him in such a way that he comes to trust the gods; and grant power to the weapon, so that the enemy may be slain by it.'

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.6.5.59)

vyāsa uvāca | tathetyuktvā bhagavatī tatraivāntaradhīyata | svāni svāni niketāni jagmurdevā mudānvitāḥ

Vyasa said: Saying 'So be it,' the Bhagavati vanished right there; and the gods, filled with joy, returned each to his own abode.
