Skandha 6 · Chapter 7

Nahusha's Anointing as Indra After Indra Enters the Lotus-Stalk

Chapter 6All chaptersChapter 8

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.6.7.1)

vyāsa uvāca | atha taṁ patitaṁ dṛṣṭvā viṣṇurviṣṇupurīṁ yayau | manasā śaṅkamānastu tasya hatyākṛtaṁ bhayam

Vyasa said: Then, seeing him fallen, Vishnu departed for his own city; yet in his heart he remained apprehensive, sensing the fear born from that killing.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.6.7.2)

indro'pi bhayasantrasto yayāvindrapurīṁ tataḥ | munayo bhayasaṁvignā hyabhavannihate ripau

Indra too, terrified, then went off to his own city; and the sages, once the enemy had been slain, became agitated with fear as well.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.6.7.3)

kimasmābhiḥ kṛtaṁ pāpaṁ yadasau vañcitaḥ kila | muniśabdo vṛthā jātaḥ sureśasya ca saṅgamāt

'What sin have we committed, that he was thus deceived? Through our very association with the lord of the gods, the name "sage" has become meaningless.'

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.6.7.4)

asmākaṁ vacanādvṛtro viśvāsamagamatkila | viśvāsaghātinaḥ saṅgādvayaṁ viśvāsaghātakāḥ

'It was our own word that led Vritra to trust; through our association with a betrayer, we ourselves have become betrayers of trust.'

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.6.7.5)

dhigiyaṁ mamatā pāpamūlamevamanarthakṛt | yadasmābhiśchalaṁ kṛtvā śapathairvañcito'suraḥ

'Shame on this self-interest, root of sin, cause of nothing but ruin — through which we ourselves practiced deceit and betrayed the asura with false oaths.'

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.6.7.6)

mantrakṛdbuddhidātā ca prerakaḥ pāpakāriṇām | pāpabhāksa bhavennūnaṁ pakṣakartā tathaiva ca

'Whoever devises the plot, offers the counsel, or incites those who do evil surely shares in that very sin — and so too does the one who merely takes a side.'

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.6.7.7)

viṣṇunāpi kṛtaṁ pāpaṁ yatsāhāyyamavāptavān | vajraṁ praviśya yenāsau pātitaḥ sattvamūrtinā

'Vishnu too committed sin by lending his aid; it was he, that embodiment of sattva, who entered the vajra and brought about his fall.'

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.6.7.8)

nūnaṁ svārthaparaḥ prāṇī na pāpāttrāsamaśnute | hariṇā harisaṅgena sarvathā duṣkṛtaṁ kṛtam

'Surely a being intent on self-interest feels no fear of sin; through Hari's own act, and through association with Hari, this wicked deed was thoroughly accomplished.'

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.6.7.9)

dvāveva staḥ padārthānāṁ dvāveva nidhanaṁ gatau | prathamaśca turīyaśca yau trilokyāṁ tu durlabhau

'Among the aims of human life, only two remain within reach — the other two have all but vanished; the first, dharma, and the fourth, moksha, are the two that have become rare indeed to attain in the three worlds.'

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.6.7.10)

arthakāmau praśastau dvau sarveṣāṁ sammatau priyau | dharmādharmeti vāgvādo dambho'yaṁ mahatāmapi

'Wealth and pleasure — these two are praised, agreeable and dear to everyone; talk of "dharma" and "adharma" is merely words — hypocrisy, even among the supposedly great.'

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.6.7.11)

munayo'pi manastāpamevaṁ kṛtvā punaḥ punaḥ | jagmuḥ svānāśramāneva vimanaskā hatodyamāḥ

The sages too, having thus tormented their own minds again and again, went back, each to his own hermitage, despondent and drained of all resolve.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.6.7.12)

tvaṣṭā tu nihataṁ śrutvā putramindreṇa bhārata | ruroda duḥkhasantapto nirvedamagamatpunaḥ

Tvashtri, O descendant of Bharata, hearing that his son had been slain by Indra, wept, tormented with grief, and sank once again into deep despair.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.6.7.13)

yatrāsau patitastatra gatvā vīkṣya tathāgatam | saṁskāraṁ kārayāmāsa vidhivatpāralaukikam

Going to the very spot where he had fallen and seeing him in that state, he had the proper funeral rites for the afterlife performed according to due ordinance.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.6.7.14)

snātvāsya salilaṁ dattvā kṛtvā caivaurdhvadaihikam | śaśāpendraṁ sa śokārtaḥ pāpiṣṭhaṁ mitraghātakam

Having bathed, offered water to him, and performed the funeral rites for the departed, he, tormented with grief, pronounced a curse upon Indra, most sinful, the betrayer of a friend.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.6.7.15)

yathā me nihataḥ putraḥ pralobhya śapathairbhṛśam | tathendro'pi mahadduḥkhaṁ prāpnotu vidhinirmitam

'Just as my son was slain, thoroughly tempted by false oaths, so too may Indra suffer a great sorrow, ordained by fate itself.'

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.6.7.16)

iti śaptvā sureśānaṁ tvaṣṭā tāpasamanvitaḥ | meroḥ śikharamāsthāya tapastepe suduṣkaram

Having thus cursed the lord of the gods, Tvashtri took to the ascetic life, established himself on the peak of Mount Meru, and performed austerity of the most extreme difficulty.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.6.7.17)

janamejaya uvāca | hatvā tvāṣṭraṁ sureśo'tha kāmavasthāmavāptavān | sukhaṁ vā duḥkhamevāgre tanme brūhi pitāmaha

Janamejaya said: 'Having slain Tvashtri's son, did the lord of the gods then attain the condition he had wished for? Did happiness follow, or only sorrow? Tell me this, O grandfather.'

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.6.7.18)

vyāsa uvāca | kiṁ pṛcchasi mahābhāga sandehaḥ kīdṛśastava | avaśyameva bhoktavyaṁ kṛtaṁ karma śubhāśubham

Vyasa said: 'What are you asking, O greatly fortunate one? What manner of doubt is this in your mind? A deed once done, be it good or evil, must certainly be reaped in its fruit.'

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.6.7.19)

baliṣṭhairdurbalairvāpi svalpaṁ vā bahu vā kṛtam | sarvathaiva hi bhoktavyaṁ sadevāsuramānuṣaiḥ

'Whether done by the strong or the weak, whether small or great — it must, without any exception, be experienced by gods, asuras, and men alike.'

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.6.7.20)

śakrāyetthaṁ matirdattā hariṇā vṛtraghātine | praviṣṭo'tha paviṁ viṣṇuḥ sahāyaḥ pratyapadyata

'Thus it was Hari who gave Shakra the counsel for Vritra's slaying; and then Vishnu entered the thunderbolt and became his helper.'

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.6.7.21)

na cāpadi sahāyo'bhūdvāsudevaḥ kathañcana | samaye svajanaḥ sarvaḥ saṁsāre'sminnarādhipa

'Yet when calamity itself came upon him, Vasudeva was in no way his helper; in this world, O lord of men, everyone is one's own kin only in good times.'

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.6.7.22)

daive vimukhatāṁ prāpte na ko'pyasti sahāyavān | pitā mātā tathā bhāryā bhrātā vātha sahodaraḥ

'When fortune turns away, no one at all remains a helper — not father, not mother, not wife, not brother, not even one's own sibling.'

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.6.7.23)

'Neither servant, nor friend, nor son — not even one's own begotten child; when fate turns adverse, no one at all comes forward to help.'

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.6.7.24)

bhoktā pāpasya puṇyasya kartā bhavati sarvathā | vṛtraṁ hatvā gatāḥ sarve nistejaskaḥ śacīpatiḥ

'Whoever commits an act, whether good or sinful, must in every case bear its fruit himself. Having slain Vritra, all the others departed; Shachi's lord alone remained, stripped of all his splendor.'

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.6.7.25)

śepustaṁ tridaśāḥ sarve brahmahetyabruvañchanaiḥ | ko nāma śapathānkṛtvā satyaṁ dattvā vacaḥ punaḥ

All the gods cursed him under their breath, calling him a 'brahmin-killer' — 'Who indeed, having sworn solemn oaths and given his word of truth, could then —'

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.6.7.26)

jighāṁsati suviśvastaṁ muniṁ mitratvamāgatam | devagoṣṭhyāṁ surodyāne gandharvāṇāṁ samāgame

'— seek to kill a sage who trusted him wholly and had become his very friend?' In the assembly of the gods, in the garden of the gods, in the gathering of gandharvas —

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.6.7.27)

sarvatraiva kathā tasya vistāramagamatkila | kiṁ kṛtaṁ duṣkṛtaṁ karma śakreṇādya jighāṁsatā

— the tale of it spread everywhere: 'What a wicked deed Shakra has committed today, in his desire to kill —'

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.6.7.28)

vṛtraṁ chalena viśvastaṁ munibhiśca pratāritam | vedapramāṇamutsṛjya svīkṛtaṁ saugataṁ matam

'— Vritra, who trusted in the deceit, betrayed even by the sages themselves; abandoning the very authority of the Veda, he has taken up a doctrine fit for a Buddhist.'

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.6.7.29)

yadayaṁ nihataḥ śanurvañcayitvātisāhasāt | ko nāma vacanaṁ dattvā viparītamathācaret

'— for this enemy was slain through deceit, with the most reckless audacity. Who, having given his word, would then act in a manner contrary to it?'

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.6.7.30)

vinā śakraṁ hariṁ vāpi yathāyaṁ vinipātitaḥ | evaṁvidhāḥ kathāścānyāḥ samājeṣvabhavanbhṛśam

'Without Shakra, or without Hari, how could he have been struck down at all?' Such tales, and many like them, spread widely through every gathering.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.6.7.31)

śuśrāvendro'pi vividhāḥ svakīrterhānikārakāḥ | yasya kīrtirhatā loke dhiktasyaiva kujīvitam

Indra too heard these many tales, so damaging to his own reputation; and truly, shame on the wretched life of one whose fame has been destroyed in the world.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.6.7.32)

yaṁ dṛṣṭvā pathi gacchantaṁ śatruḥ smeramukho bhavet | indradyumno'pi rājarṣiḥ patitaḥ kīrtisaṅkṣayāt

When one's very enemy smiles at the sight of him walking along the road — such a life deserves only contempt. Even the royal sage Indradyumna fell, through the decay of his good name.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.6.7.33)

svargādakṛtapāpo'sau pāpakṛtkiṁ na pātyate | svalpe'parādhe'pi nṛpo yayātiḥ patitaḥ kila

He, sinless as he was, fell from heaven — how then could a sinner not be made to fall? Even for a trifling offense, King Yayati fell, as is well known.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.6.7.34)

nṛpaḥ karkaṭatāṁ prāpto yugānaṣṭādaśaiva tu | bhṛgupatnīśiraśchedādbhagavānhariracyutaḥ

That king became a crab and remained so for eighteen full yugas; and for severing the head of Bhrigu's wife, the blessed, imperishable Hari himself —

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.6.7.35)

brahmaśāpātpaśoryonau sañjāto makarādiṣu | viṣṇuśca vāmano bhūtvā yācanārthaṁ balergṛhe

— through a brahmin's curse, was made to be born in the wombs of beasts, as a crocodile and the like; and Vishnu too, becoming Vamana, went for the sake of asking alms to the house of Bali —

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.6.7.36)

gataḥ kimaparaṁ duḥkhaṁ prāpnoti duṣkṛtī naraḥ | rāmo'pi vanavāseṣu sītāvirahajaṁ bahu

— such was Vishnu's own lot. What further suffering does not fall upon a wrongdoer? Even Rama, during his years in the forest, endured great sorrow born of separation from Sita —

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.6.7.37)

duḥkhaṁ ca prāptavānghoraṁ bhṛguśāpena bhārata | tathendro'pi brahmahatyākṛtaṁ prāpya mahadbhayam

— and terrible sorrow through Bhrigu's curse, O descendant of Bharata. In the same way, Indra too, having incurred a great fear from the sin of killing a brahmin —

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.6.7.38)

na svāsthyaṁ prāpa gehe'sau sarvasiddhisamanvite | paulomī taṁ sabhāhīnaṁ dṛṣṭvā provāca vāsavam

— found no peace even in his own home, for all its every comfort and accomplishment. Pauloni (Shachi), seeing him withdrawn from company, spoke to Vasava.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.6.7.39)

niḥśvasantaṁ bhayatrastaṁ naṣṭasaṁjñaṁ vicetasam | kiṁ prabho'dya bhayārto'si mṛtaste dāruṇo ripuḥ

Seeing him sighing, frightened, dazed, and out of his senses, she said: 'My lord, why are you so tormented with fear today? Your terrible enemy is already dead.'

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.6.7.40)

kā cintā vartate kānta tava śatruniṣūdana | kasmācchocasi lokeśa niḥśvasanprākṛto yathā

'What anxiety weighs on you, my beloved slayer of enemies? Why do you grieve, O lord of the worlds, sighing like an ordinary man?'

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.6.7.41)

nānyo'sti balavāñchatruryena cintāparo bhavān | indra uvāca | nārātirbalavānme'sti na śāntirna sukhaṁ tathā

'There is no other powerful enemy left that could keep you so anxious.' Indra said: 'I have no powerful foe remaining, yet neither peace nor happiness is mine.'

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.6.7.42)

brahmahatyābhayādrājñi bibhemi satataṁ gṛhe | na nandanaṁ sukhakaraṁ nāmṛtaṁ na gṛhaṁ vanam

'Out of fear of the sin of killing a brahmin, O queen, I remain in constant dread even at home; neither Nandana brings me joy, nor nectar, nor home, nor forest.'

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.6.7.43)

gandharvāṇāṁ tathā geyaṁ nṛtyamapsarasāṁ punaḥ | na tvaṁ sukhakarā nārī nānā ca surayoṣitaḥ

'Nor the songs of the gandharvas, nor the dancing of the apsarases; not even you, dear one, bring me joy any longer, nor any of the celestial women.'

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.6.7.44)

na tathā kāmadhenuśca devavṛkṣaḥ sukhapradaḥ | kiṁ karomi kva gacchāmi kva śarma mama jāyate

'Nor does Kamadhenu, nor the celestial tree, bring me any happiness now. What am I to do, where am I to go, where might peace ever be born for me?'

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.6.7.45)

iti cintāparaḥ kānte na labhe sukhamātmani | vyāsa uvāca | ityuktvā vacanaṁ śakraḥ priyāṁ paramakātarām

'Consumed thus with anxiety, my beloved, I find no happiness within myself at all.' Vyasa said: Having spoken these words, Shakra, leaving his beloved utterly stricken with fear —

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.6.7.46)

nirjagāma gṛhānmando mānasaṁ sara uttamam | padmanāle praviṣṭo'sau bhayārtaḥ śokakarṣitaḥ

— he, dispirited, left his home and went to the excellent lake Manasa; tormented by fear and worn thin with sorrow, he entered into a lotus-stalk.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.6.7.47)

na prājñāyata devendrastvabhibhūtaśca kalmaṣaiḥ | praticchanno vasatyapsu ceṣṭamāna ivoragaḥ

The lord of the gods, overcome by his sins, could not be recognized by anyone; concealed, he dwelt within the waters, moving about like a serpent.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.6.7.48)

asahāyasturāṣāḍaiccintārto vikalendriyaḥ | tataḥ pranaṣṭe devendre brahmahatyābhayārdite

Helpless, anxious, his senses utterly disordered, Turashad went there. And so, with the lord of the gods vanished, afflicted by the fear of the sin of killing a brahmin —

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.6.7.49)

surāścintāturāścāsannutpātāścābhavannatha | ṛṣayaḥ siddhagandharvā bhayārtāścābhavanbhṛśam

— the gods grew anxious, and calamities began to appear; the sages, the siddhas, and the gandharvas too became greatly afflicted with fear.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.6.7.50)

arājakaṁ jagatsarvamabhibhūtamupadravaiḥ | avarṣaṇaṁ tadā jātaṁ pṛthivī kṣīṇavaibhavā

The entire world, left without a ruler, was overwhelmed by calamities; drought then set in, and the earth's splendor grew faint.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.6.7.51)

vicchinnasrotaso nadyaḥ sarāṁsyanudakāni vai | evaṁ tvarājake jāte devatā munayastathā

The flow of the rivers broke off, and the lakes lay waterless. And so, with the realm left without a ruler, the gods together with the sages —

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.6.7.52)

vicārya nahuṣaṁ cakruḥ śakraṁ sarve divaukasaḥ | samprāpya nahuṣo rājā dharmiṣṭho'pi rajobalāt

— after due deliberation, all the dwellers of heaven made Nahusha into Shakra, king of the gods; and King Nahusha, righteous though he was, upon attaining that rank, under the force of rajas —

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.6.7.53)

babhūva viṣayāsaktaḥ pañcabāṇaśarāhataḥ | apsarobhirvṛtaḥ krīḍandevodyāneṣu bhārata

— became attached to sensual pleasures, struck by the arrows of the five-arrowed god of love; surrounded by apsarases, sporting in the gardens of the gods, O descendant of Bharata —

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.6.7.54)

śakrapatnīguṇāñchrutvā cakame tāṁ sa pārthivaḥ | ṛṣīnāha kimindrāṇī nopagacchati māṁ kila

— hearing of Shakra's wife's virtues, that king came to desire her. He said to the sages: 'Why does Indrani not come to me?'

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.6.7.55)

bhavadbhiścāmaraiḥ sarvaiḥ kṛto'haṁ vāsavastviha | preṣayadhvaṁ surāḥ kāmaṁ sevārthaṁ mama vai śacīm

'You and all the other immortals have made me Vasava here; send Shachi, O gods, to serve me according to my wish.'
