vyāsa uvāca babhūva cakravartī sa nṛpatiḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ māndhātā pṛthivīṁ sarvāmajayannṛpatīśvaraḥ
Vyasa said: That king Mandhata, true to his word, became a universal emperor; that lord of kings conquered the entire earth.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.7.10.2)
dasyavo'sya bhayatrastā yayurgiriguhāsu ca indreṇāsya kṛtaṁ nāma trasaddasyuriti sphuṭam
Robbers, terrified of him, fled into mountain caves; and Indra clearly gave him the name Trasaddasyu, "he from whom robbers flee in terror."
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.7.10.3)
tasya bindumatī bhāryā śaśabindoḥ sutābhavat pativratā surūpā ca sarvalakṣaṇasaṁyutā
His wife was Bindumati, daughter of Shashabindu, devoted to her husband, of beautiful form, and endowed with every auspicious mark.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.7.10.4)
tasyāmutpādayāmāsa māndhātā dvau sutau nṛpa purukutsaṁ suvikhyātaṁ mucukundaṁ tathāparam
Through her, O king, Mandhata begot two sons: the very renowned Purukutsa, and another, Muchukunda.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.7.10.5)
purukutsāttato'raṇyaḥ putraḥ paramadhārmikaḥ pitṛbhaktirataścābhūdbṛhadaśvastadātmajaḥ
From Purukutsa was born a son, Aranya, supremely righteous; and his son, devoted to his father, was Brihadashva.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.7.10.6)
haryaśvastasya putro'bhūddhārmikaḥ paramārthavit tasyātmajastridhanvābhūdaruṇastasya cātmajaḥ
His son was Haryashva, righteous and a knower of highest truth; his son was Tridhanva, and his son was Aruna.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.7.10.7)
aruṇasya sutaḥ śrīmānsatyavrata iti śrutaḥ so'bhūdicchācaraḥ kāmī mandātmā hyatilolupaḥ
Aruna's illustrious son was known as Satyavrata; he became a man who followed his own whims, lustful, of dull understanding, and exceedingly greedy.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.7.10.8)
sa pāpātmā viprabhāryāṁ hṛtavānkāmamohitaḥ vivāhe tasya vighnaṁ sa cakāra nṛpateḥ sutaḥ
That sinful-souled man, deluded by lust, abducted a Brahmin's wife-to-be; that king's son caused this obstruction at her wedding.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.7.10.9)
militā brāhmaṇāstatra rājānamaruṇaṁ nṛpa ūcurbhṛśaṁ suduḥkhārtā hā hatāḥsmeti cāsakṛt
The Brahmins, gathering together, O king, said to King Aruna, greatly afflicted with sorrow, again and again, "Alas! We are ruined!"
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.7.10.10)
papraccha rājā tānviprānduḥkhitānpuravāsinaḥ kiṁ kṛtaṁ mama putreṇa bhavatāmaśubhaṁ dvijāḥ
The king asked those distressed Brahmins, citizens of his realm: "What inauspicious deed has my son done to you, O twice-born?"
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.7.10.11)
tanniśamya dvijā vākyaṁ rājño vinayapūrvakam tadocustvaruṇaṁ viprāṁ kṛtāśīrvacanā bhṛśam
Hearing the king's respectful words, the Brahmins then, having offered him abundant blessings, spoke to Aruna:
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.7.10.12)
brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ - rājaṁstava sutenādya vivāhe prahṛtā kila vivāhitā viprakanyā balena balināṁvara
The Brahmins said: "O king, today by your son, a Brahmin maiden being wed was violently seized; by force, O foremost of the mighty, she was carried off during her wedding."
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.7.10.13)
vyāsa uvāca śrutvā teṣāṁ vacastathyaṁ rājā paramadhārmikaḥ putramāha vṛthā nāma kṛtaṁ te duṣṭakarmaṇā
Vyasa said: Hearing their truthful words, the supremely righteous king said to his son: "In vain indeed have you been given your name, through this wicked deed of yours."
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.7.10.14)
gaccha dūraṁ sumandātmandurācāra gṛhānmama na sthātavyaṁ tvayā pāpa viṣaye mama sarvathā
"Go far away, O dull-witted, evil-conducted one, from my house; you shall not, O sinner, remain in my domain under any circumstance."
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.7.10.15)
kupitaṁ pitaraṁ prāha kva gacchāmīti vai muhuḥ aruṇastamathovāca śvapākaiḥ saha vartaya
He said to his angry father again and again, "Where shall I go?" Then Aruna said to him: "Go live among the outcastes."
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.7.10.16)
śvapacasya kṛtaṁ karma dvijadārāpahāraṇam tasmāttaiḥ saha saṁsargaṁ kṛtvā tiṣṭha yathāsukham
"You have done the deed of an outcaste — abducting a Brahmin's betrothed wife. Therefore, keep company with them and live however you please."
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.7.10.17)
nāhaṁ putreṇa putrārthī tvayā ca kulapāṁsana yatheṣṭaṁ vraja duṣṭātman kīrtināśaḥ kṛtastvayā
"I have no desire for such a son as you, O defiler of our family. Go wherever you wish, O evil-souled one; you have destroyed our good name."
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.7.10.18)
sa niśamya piturvākyaṁ kupitasya mahātmanaḥ niścakrāma purāttasmāttarasā śvapacānyayau
Hearing the words of his angry, great-souled father, he departed at once from the city and went quickly to live among the outcastes.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.7.10.19)
satyavratastadā tatra śvapākaiḥ saha vartate dhanurbāṇadharaḥ śrīmānkavacī karuṇālayaḥ
Satyavrata then dwelt there among the outcastes, bearing bow and arrows, radiant, clad in armor, yet a repository of compassion.
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.7.10.20)
yadā niṣkāsitaḥ pitrā kupitena mahātmanā guruṇātha vasiṣṭhena prerito'sau mahīpatiḥ
When he had been banished by his angry, great-souled father, that king had been previously urged on by his preceptor Vasishtha —
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.7.10.21)
tasmātsatyavratastasminbabhūva krodhasaṁyutaḥ vasiṣṭhe dharmaśāstrajñe nivāraṇaparāṅmukhe
— Because of this, Satyavrata harbored anger against Vasishtha, that knower of the sacred law, who had refused to intervene on his behalf with his father.
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.7.10.22)
kenacitkāraṇenātha pitā tasya mahīpatiḥ putrārthe'sau tapastaptuṁ puraṁ tyaktvā vanaṁ gataḥ
Then, for some reason, his father, that lord of the earth, left the city and went to the forest to perform austerity for the sake of another son.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.7.10.23)
na vavarṣa tadā tasminviṣaye pākaśāsanaḥ samā dvādaśa rājendra tenādharmeṇa sarvathā
Then Indra sent no rain upon that realm, O lord of kings, for twelve years, entirely because of that unrighteous deed.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.7.10.24)
viśvāmitrastadā dārāṁstasmiṁstu viṣaye nṛpa saṁnyasya kauśikītīre cacāra vipulaṁ tapaḥ
At that time, O king, Vishvamitra, having left his wife in that region, practiced extensive austerity on the bank of the Kaushiki river.
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.7.10.25)
kātarā tatra sañjātā bhāryā vai kauśikasya ha kuṭumbabharaṇārthāya duḥkhitā varavarṇinī
There, Vishvamitra's wife became distressed, that woman of excellent complexion, sorrowful over the burden of supporting her family.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.7.10.26)
bālakānkṣudhayākrāntānrudataḥ paśyatī bhṛśam yācamānāṁśca nīvārānkaṣṭamāpa pativratā
Seeing her children, overwhelmed with hunger, crying pitifully, and begging for wild rice, that faithful wife fell into great distress.
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.7.10.27)
cintayāmāsa duḥkhārtā tokānvīkṣya kṣudhāturān nṛpo nāsti pure hyadya kaṁ yāce vā karomi kim
Sorrow-stricken, seeing her children tormented by hunger, she thought: "There is no king in the city today; whom shall I beg from, or what shall I do?"
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.7.10.28)
na me trātāsti putrāṇāṁ patirme nāsti sannidhau rudanti bālakāḥ kāmaṁ dhiṅme jīvanamadya vai
"There is no protector for my sons, my husband is not by my side. My children weep bitterly — shame on my life today!"
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.7.10.29)
dhanahīnāṁ ca māṁ tyaktvā tapastaptuṁ gataḥ patiḥ na jānāti samartho'pi duḥkhitāṁ dhanavarjitām
"My husband, leaving me without means, has gone to perform austerity; though capable, he does not know how distressed and destitute I am."
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.7.10.30)
bālānāṁ bharaṇaṁ kena karomi patinā vinā mariṣyanti sutāḥ sarve kṣudhayā pīḍitā bhṛśam
"By what means shall I support my children without my husband? All my sons will die, so severely afflicted by hunger."
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.7.10.31)
ekaṁ sutaṁ tu vikrīya dravyeṇa kiyatā punaḥ pālayāmi sutānanyāneṣa me vihito vidhiḥ
"Selling one son for whatever price I can get, I shall support my other sons — this is the course laid out for me."
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.7.10.32)
sarveṣāṁ māraṇaṁ nāddhā yuktaṁ mama viparyaye kālasya kalanāyāhaṁ vikrīṇāmi tathātmajam
"The death of all is certainly not right for me, even in this adversity; therefore, submitting to the reckoning of time, I shall sell my own son."
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.7.10.33)
hṛdayaṁ kaṭhinaṁ kṛtvā sañcintya manasā satī sā darbharajjvā baddhvātha gale putraṁ vinirgatā
Hardening her heart, and having thus resolved in her mind, that chaste woman, binding a rope of kusha grass around her son's neck, went forth.
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.7.10.34)
munipatnī gale baddhvā madhyamaṁ putramaurasam śeṣasya bharaṇārthāya gṛhītvā calitā gṛhāt
The sage's wife, having bound by the neck her own middle son, took him with her, for the sake of supporting the rest, and departed from her home.
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.7.10.35)
dṛṣṭā satyavratenārtā tāpasī śokasaṁyutā papraccha nṛpatistāṁ tu kiṁ cikīrṣasi śobhane
That distressed ascetic-woman, overcome with sorrow, was seen by Satyavrata; the king asked her: "What are you about to do, O beautiful one?"
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.7.10.36)
rudantaṁ bālakaṁ kaṇṭhe baddhvā nayasi kādhunā kimarthaṁ cārusarvāṅgi satyaṁ brūhi mamāgrataḥ
"Why are you leading this weeping child, bound by the neck? For what reason, O beautiful woman in every limb? Tell me the truth before me."
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.7.10.37)
ṛṣipatnyuvāca - viśvāmitrasya bhāryāhaṁ putro'yaṁ me nṛpātmaja vikretumaurasaṁ kāmaṁ gamiṣye viṣame sutam
The sage's wife said: "I am the wife of Vishvamitra, O king's son; this is my own son. I am going to a desperate strait, to sell my own child."
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.7.10.38)
annaṁ nāsti patirmuktvā gatastaptuṁ nṛpa kvacit vikrīṇāmi kṣudhārtainaṁ śeṣasya bharaṇāya vai
"There is no food; my husband has left and gone somewhere to perform austerity, O king. I am selling him, tormented by hunger, for the sake of supporting the rest of my children."
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.7.10.39)
rājovāca - pativrate rakṣa putraṁ dāsyāmi bharaṇaṁ tava tāvadeva patiste'tra vanāccaivāgamiṣyati
The king said: "O faithful wife, keep your son; I shall provide for your family's support. Until your husband himself returns here from the forest —"
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.7.10.40)
vṛkṣe tavāśramābhyāśe bhakṣyaṁ kiñcinnirantaram bandhayitvā gamiṣyāmi satyametadbravīmyaham
"— I shall continually hang some food upon a tree near your hermitage before I go; this I tell you truthfully."
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.7.10.41)
ityayuktā sā tadā tena rājñā kauśikakāminī vibandhaṁ tanayaṁ kṛtvā jagāmāśramamaṇḍalam
Thus assured by that king, Vishvamitra's wife then, releasing the bond upon her son, went back to the circle of her hermitage.
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.7.10.42)
so'bhavad gālavo nāma galabandhānmahātapāḥ sā tu svasyāśrame gatvā mumoda bālakairvṛtā
That great ascetic, because of the binding at his neck, came to be named Galava. And she, going to her own hermitage, rejoiced, surrounded by her children.
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.7.10.43)
satyavratastu bhaktyā ca kṛpayā ca pariplutaḥ viśvāmitrasya ca muneḥ kalatraṁ tad babhāra ha
Satyavrata, overflowing with devotion and compassion, then indeed supported the wife of the sage Vishvamitra.
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.7.10.44)
vane sthitānmṛgānhatvā varāhānmahiṣāṁstathā viśvāmitravanābhyāśe māṁsaṁ vṛkṣe babandha ha
Slaying the deer that lived in the forest, and boars and buffalo as well, he hung the meat upon a tree near Vishvamitra's forest hermitage.
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.7.10.45)
ṛṣipatnī gṛhītvā tanmāṁsaṁ putrānadāttataḥ nirvṛttiṁ paramāṁ prāpa prāpya bhakṣyamanuttamam
The sage's wife, taking that meat, gave it to her sons; and, having obtained such excellent food, she attained the highest relief.
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.7.10.46)
ayodhyāṁ caiva rājyaṁ ca tathaivāntaḥpuraṁ muniḥ gate taptuṁ nṛpe tasminvasiṣṭhaḥ paryarakṣata
While that king had gone to perform austerity, the sage Vasishtha guarded Ayodhya, the kingdom, and the inner apartments as well.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.7.10.47)
satyavrato'pi dharmātmā hyatiṣṭhannagarād bahiḥ piturājñāṁ samāsthāya paśughnavratavānvane
Satyavrata too, that righteous soul, remained outside the city, obedient to his father's command, keeping a vow of hunting animals in the forest.
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.7.10.48)
satyavrato hyakasmācca kasyacitkāraṇānnṛpaḥ vasiṣṭhe cādhikaṁ manyuṁ dhārayāmāsa nityadā
And King Satyavrata, for a certain reason that had arisen, harbored ever-increasing anger against Vasishtha continually.
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.7.10.49)
tyajyamānaṁ vane pitrā dharmiṣṭhaṁ ca priyaṁ sutam na vārayāmāsa munirvasiṣṭhaḥ kāraṇena ha
When that righteous and beloved son was being cast out into the forest by his father, the sage Vasishtha did not intervene to stop it, for a certain reason —
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.7.10.50)
pāṇigrahaṇamantrāṇāṁ niṣṭhā syātsaptame pade jānannapi sa dharmātmā vipradāraparigrahe
— knowing that the completion of the marriage-vows lies in the seventh ritual step, that righteous sage held that the girl was not yet fully wed, and so did not consider the marriage broken.
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.7.10.51)
kasmiṁściddivase'raṇye mṛgābhāve mahīpatiḥ vasiṣṭhasya ca gāṁ dogdhrīmapaśyadvanamadhyagām
On a certain day, in the absence of deer in the forest, that king saw Vasishtha's milk-cow wandering in the midst of the forest.
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.7.10.52)
tāṁ jaghāna kṣudhārtastu krodhānmohācca dasyuvat vṛkṣe babandha tanmāṁsaṁ nītvā svayamabhakṣayat
Tormented by hunger, in anger and delusion, like a robber, he slew her, hung her flesh upon a tree, and himself ate some of it after carrying it off.
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.7.10.53)
ṛṣipatnī sutānsarvānbhojayamāsa tattadā śaṅkamānā mṛgasyeti na goriti ca suvratā
The sage's wife, that woman of firm vows, fed all her sons with that meat, thinking it was deer meat, and not knowing it to be the cow's.
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.7.10.54)
vasiṣṭhastu hatāṁ dogdhrīṁ jñātvā kruddhastamabravīt durātman kiṁ kṛtaṁ pāpaṁ dhenughātātpiśācavat
But Vasishtha, learning that his milk-cow had been slain, said to him in anger: "O evil-souled one, what sin have you committed, killing a cow like a fiend!"
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.7.10.55)
evaṁ te śaṅkavaḥ krūrāḥ patantu tvaritāstrayaḥ govadhāddāraharaṇātpituḥ krodhāttathā bhṛśam
"For this, may three cruel spikes of misfortune fall swiftly upon you — for the killing of a cow, for the abduction of a bride, and for your father's fierce wrath as well."
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.7.10.56)
triśaṅkuriti nāmnā vai bhuvi khyāto bhaviṣyasi piśācarūpamātmānaṁ darśayansarvadehinām
"By the name Trishanku, 'three spikes,' shall you become known on this earth, showing yourself in the form of a fiend to all creatures."
Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.7.10.57)
vyāsa uvāca evaṁ śapto vasiṣṭhena tadā satyavrato nṛpaḥ cacāra ca tapastīvraṁ tasminnevāśrame sthitaḥ
Vyasa said: Thus cursed by Vasishtha, King Satyavrata then performed intense austerity, remaining in that very hermitage.
