Skandha 7 · Chapter 14
By Varuna's Grace, a Son Born to Shaivya
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.7.14.1)
vyāsa uvāca vicintya manasā kṛtyaṁ gādhisūnurmahātapāḥ prakalpya yajñasambhārānmunīnāmantrayattadā
Vyasa said: Having pondered in his mind what was to be done, the greatly ascetic son of Gadhi, having arranged the materials for the sacrifice, then invited the sages.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.7.14.2)
munayastaṁ makhaṁ jñātvā viśvāmitranimantritāḥ nāgatāḥ sarva evaite vasiṣṭhena nivāritāḥ
Learning of that sacrifice, the sages, though invited by Vishvamitra, did not come at all, being dissuaded by Vasishtha.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.7.14.3)
gādhisūnustadājñāya vimanāścātiduḥkhitaḥ ājagāmāśramaṁ tatra yatrāsau nṛpatiḥ sthitaḥ
Learning of this, the son of Gadhi, downcast and greatly aggrieved, came to the hermitage where that king was staying.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.7.14.4)
tamāha kauśikaḥ kruddho vasiṣṭhena nivāritāḥ nāgatāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ sarve yajñārthaṁ nṛpasattama
Kaushika, angered, said to him: "All the Brahmins, dissuaded by Vasishtha, did not come for the sake of this sacrifice, O best of kings."
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.7.14.5)
paśya me tapasaḥ siddhiṁ yathā tvāṁ surasadmani prāpayāmi mahārāja vāñchitaṁ te karomyaham
"Behold now the accomplishment of my austerity — how I shall bring you to the abode of the gods, O great king; I shall fulfill your desire."
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.7.14.6)
ityuktvā jalamādāya hastena munisattamaḥ dadau puṇyaṁ tadā tasmai gāyatrījapasambhavam
Having said this, that best of sages, taking water in his hand, then gave him the merit born of his own recitation of the Gayatri.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.7.14.7)
dattvātha sukṛtaṁ rājñe tamuvāca mahīpatim yatheṣṭaṁ gaccha rājarṣe triviṣṭapamatandritaḥ
Having given that merit to the king, he said to that lord of the earth: "Go as you wish, O royal sage, to the world of heaven, without delay."
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.7.14.8)
puṇyena mama rājendra bahukālārjitena ca yāhi śakrapurīṁ prītaḥ svasti te'stu surālaye
"By my merit, O lord of kings, accumulated over a long time, go joyfully to Indra's city; may all be well with you in the abode of the gods."
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.7.14.9)
vyāsa uvāca ityuktavati viprendre triśaṅkustarasā tataḥ utpapāta yathā pakṣī vegavāṁstapaso balāt
Vyasa said: When that foremost of Brahmins had spoken thus, Trishanku then, at once, by the power of that austerity, sped upward swiftly like a bird.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.7.14.10)
utpatya gagane rājā gataḥ śakrapurīṁ yadā dṛṣṭo devagaṇaistatra krūraścāṇḍālaveṣabhāk
Rising up into the sky, when the king reached Indra's city, he was seen there by the assemblies of gods, fierce in appearance, wearing the garb of an outcaste.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.7.14.11)
kathito'sau surendrāya ko'yamāyāti satvaraḥ gagane devavadvā yo durdarśaḥ śvapacākṛtiḥ
It was reported to Indra: "Who is this that comes so swiftly through the sky, like a god, yet so hideous to behold, in the form of an outcaste?"
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.7.14.12)
sahasotthāya śakrastamapaśyatpuruṣādhamam jñātvā triśaṅkumapi sa nirbhartsya tarasābravīt
Rising suddenly, Indra saw that most degraded of men; recognizing him as Trishanku, he rebuked him and spoke to him at once:
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.7.14.13)
śvapaca kva samāyāsi devaloke jugupsitaḥ yāhi śīghraṁ tato bhūmau nātra sthātuṁ tvayocitam
"O outcaste, where are you coming to? You are despised in the world of the gods; go quickly, back down to the earth — it is not fitting for you to remain here."
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.7.14.14)
ityuktaḥ skhalitaḥ svargācchakreṇāmitrakarśana nipapāta tadā rājā kṣīṇapuṇyo yathāmaraḥ
Thus addressed, O scourge of enemies, and dislodged from heaven by Indra, the king fell headlong, his merit exhausted, like a fallen immortal.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.7.14.15)
punaścukrośa bhūpālo viśvāmitreti cāsakṛt patāmi rakṣa duḥkhārtaṁ svargāccalitamāśugam
The king cried out again and again, "O Vishvamitra! I am falling! Save me, tormented with sorrow, dislodged from heaven and falling swiftly!"
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.7.14.16)
tasya tatkranditaṁ rājan patitaḥ kauśiko muniḥ śrutvā tiṣṭheti hovāca patantaṁ vīkṣya bhūpatim
Hearing that cry of his, O king, the sage Kaushika, seeing the king falling, said, "Stay where you are!"
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.7.14.17)
vacanāttasya tatraiva sthito'sau gagane nṛpaḥ munestapaḥprabhāveṇa calito'pi surālayāt
By his word, the king remained right there in the sky, halted, though dislodged from the abode of the gods, by the power of the sage's austerity.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.7.14.18)
viśvāmitro'pyapaḥ spṛṣṭvā cakāreṣṭiṁ suvistarām vidhātuṁ nūtanāṁ sṛṣṭiṁ svargalokaṁ dvitīyakam
Vishvamitra too, touching water, performed an extensive sacrificial rite, in order to fashion a new creation — a second world of heaven.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.7.14.19)
tasyodyamaṁ tathā jñātvā tvaritastu śacīpatiḥ tatrājagāma sahasā muniṁ prati tu gādhijam
Learning of this undertaking of his, Indra, lord of Shachi, quickly and suddenly came there to the sage, the son of Gadhi.
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.7.14.20)
kiṁ brahman kriyate sādho kasmātkopasamākulaḥ alaṁ sṛṣṭyā muniśreṣṭha brūhi kiṁ karavāṇi te
"What is this you are doing, O Brahmin, O good one? Why are you so troubled with anger? Enough of this creation, O best of sages — tell me, what shall I do for you?"
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.7.14.21)
viśvāmitra uvāca svaṁ nivāsaṁ mahīpālaṁ cyutaṁ tvadbhuvanād vibho nayasva prītiyogena triśaṅkuṁ cātiduḥkhitam
Vishvamitra said: "O mighty one, receive back into your own realm this king Trishanku, fallen from your world, greatly aggrieved, and take him with affection."
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.7.14.22)
vyāsa uvāca tasya taṁ niścayaṁ jñātvā turāṣāḍatiśaṅkitaḥ tapobalaṁ viditvogramomityovāca vāsavaḥ
Vyasa said: Learning of his firm resolve, Indra, greatly apprehensive, and knowing the fierce power of his austerity, said "So be it."
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.7.14.23)
divyadehaṁ nṛpaṁ kṛtvā vimānavarasaṁsthitam āpṛcchya kauśikaṁ śakro'gamannijapurīṁ tadā
Having given the king a divine body and set him upon an excellent celestial chariot, Indra, taking leave of Kaushika, then went to his own city.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.7.14.24)
gate śakre tu vai svargaṁ triśaṅkusahite tataḥ viśvāmitraḥ sukhaṁ prāpya svāśrame susthiro'bhavat
When Indra had gone to heaven, taking Trishanku with him, Vishvamitra, having thus found happiness, settled peacefully in his own hermitage.
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.7.14.25)
hariścandro'tha tacchrutvā viśvāmitropakārakam pituḥ svargamanaṁ kāmaṁ mudito rājyamanvaśāt
Harishchandra then, hearing of this favor done by Vishvamitra, and of his father's happy ascent to heaven, delighted, ruled the kingdom.

That lord of Ayodhya, filled with affection, took his pleasure together with his wife, who was endowed with beauty, youth, and grace.
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.7.14.27)

As time passed, that young woman did not become pregnant; then the king became filled with anxiety and exceedingly sorrowful.
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.7.14.28)

"There is no proper destiny for one without a son, as you well know, O best of the twice-born; why, knowing my sorrow and being capable, do you disregard it?"
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.7.14.31)

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.7.14.33)

tārāgrahabalopete putraṁ devasutopamam putre jāte nṛpaḥ snātvā brāhmaṇaiḥ pariveṣṭitaḥ
