Skandha 7 · Chapter 19

Surrendering All to Kaushika, and the Giving of the Dakshina

Chapter 18All chaptersChapter 20

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.7.19.1)

vyāsa uvāca iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā bhūpateḥ kauśiko muniḥ prahasya pratyuvācedaṁ hariścandraṁ tathā nṛpa

Vyasa said: Hearing the king's words, the sage Kaushika smiled and replied to Harishchandra in this way, O king!

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.7.19.2)

rājaṁstīrthamidaṁ puṇyaṁ pāvanaṁ pāpanāśanam snānaṁ kuru mahābhāga pitṝṇāṁ tarpaṇaṁ tathā

O king, this is a sacred and purifying tirtha that destroys sin; O fortunate one, bathe here, and also offer libations to your ancestors.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.7.19.3)

kālaḥ śubhatamo'stīha tīrthe snātvā viśāmpate dānaṁ dadasva śaktyātra puṇyatīrthe'tipāvane

O guardian of your people, the time here at this tirtha is most auspicious; having bathed, give also, according to your ability, gifts at this most sacred and holy crossing.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.7.19.4)

prāpya tīrthaṁ mahāpuṇyamasnātvā yastu gacchati sa bhavedātmahā bhūya iti svāyambhuvo'bravīt

Whoever, having reached this most meritorious tirtha, departs without bathing, becomes like a slayer of his own self — so has the Self-Born One (Brahma) declared.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.7.19.5)

tasmāttīrthavare rājan kuru puṇyaṁ svaśaktitaḥ darśayiṣyāmi mārgaṁ te gantāsi nagaraṁ tataḥ

Therefore, O king, perform meritorious deeds here at this excellent tirtha according to your ability; I shall show you the way, and then you may go on to your city.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.7.19.6)

āgamiṣyāmahaṁ mārgadarśanārthaṁ tavānagha tvayā sahādya kākutstha tava dānena toṣitaḥ

O sinless one of Kakutstha's line, I too shall come today to show you the way, gladdened by your act of giving.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.7.19.7)

tacchrutvā vacanaṁ rājā muneḥ kapaṭamaṇḍitam vāsāṁsyuttārya vidhivatsnātumabhyāyayau nadīm

Hearing this speech of the sage, laced with deceit, the king removed his garments and went to the river to bathe according to the proper rite.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.7.19.8)

bandhayitvā hayaṁ vṛkṣe munivākyena mohitaḥ avaśyambhāviyogena tadvaśastu tadābhavat

Deluded by the sage's words, he bound his horse to a tree; and, bound by the inevitable working of fate, he fell at that very moment under the sage's control.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.7.19.9)

rājā snānavidhiṁ kṛtvā santarpya pitṛdevatāḥ viśvāmitramuvācedaṁ svāmin dānaṁ dadāmi te

The king, having completed the rite of bathing and having offered libations to the ancestors and the gods, said to Vishvamitra: O lord, I offer you a gift.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.7.19.10)

yadicchasi mahābhāga tatte dāsyāmi sāmpratam gāvo bhūmirhiraṇyaṁ ca gajāśvarathavāhanam

O fortunate one, whatever you desire, I shall give it to you at once — cows, land, gold, elephants, horses, chariots, or mounts —

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.7.19.11)

nādeyaṁ me kimapyasti kṛtametad vrataṁ purā rājasūye makhaśreṣṭhe munīnāṁ sannidhāvapi

there is nothing whatsoever that I would refuse to give; I have already taken this vow long ago, at the excellent Rajasuya sacrifice, even in the presence of the sages.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.7.19.12)

tasmāttvamiha samptāptastīrthe'sminpravare mune yatte'sti vāñchitaṁ brūhi dadāmi tava vāñchitam

Therefore, O sage, you have met me here at this excellent tirtha; whatever your desire may be, speak it, and I shall give you what you wish.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.7.19.13)

viśvāmitra uvāca mayā pūrvaṁ śrutā rājan kīrtiste vipulā bhuvi vasiṣṭhena ca samproktā dātā nāsti mahītale

Vishvamitra said: O king, I have already heard of your vast renown upon this earth, and Vasishtha too has declared that there is no giver equal to you on this earth.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.7.19.14)

hariścandro nṛpaśreṣṭhaḥ sūryavaṁśe mahīpatiḥ tādṛśo nṛpatirdātā na bhūto na bhaviṣyati

There has never been, nor will there ever be, a king so generous as this best of kings, Harishchandra of the Solar dynasty —

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.7.19.15)

pṛthivyāṁ paramodārastriśaṅkutanayo yathā atastvāṁ prārthayāmyadya vivāho me'sti pārthivaḥ

none so supremely generous on this earth as Trishanku's son. Therefore, today I make this request of you — I have a marriage to arrange,

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.7.19.16)

putrasya ca mahābhāga tadarthaṁ dehi me dhanam rājovāca vivāhaṁ kuru viprendra dadāmi prārthitaṁ tava

O fortunate one — for my son's sake, give me wealth for that very purpose. The king said: O lord of brahmins, perform the marriage; I shall give you what you ask,

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.7.19.17)

yadicchasi dhanaṁ kāmaṁ dātā tasyāsmi niścitam vyāsa uvāca ityuktaḥ kauśikastena vañcanātatparo muniḥ

whatever wealth you desire — I am, without doubt, its giver. Vyasa said: Thus addressed, the sage Kaushika, ever bent on deception,

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.7.19.18)

udbhāvya māyāṁ gāndharvīṁ pārthivāyāpyadarśayat kumāraḥ sukāmāraśca kanyā ca daśavārṣikī

conjured up an illusion by his gandharva magic and displayed it before the king — a most beautiful youth, and a girl of ten years.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.7.19.19)

etayoḥ kāryamapyadya kartavyaṁ nṛpasattama rājasūyādhikaṁ puṇyaṁ gṛhasthasya vivāhataḥ

O best of kings, this very day the marriage rite of these two must be performed; the merit of a householder's marriage exceeds even that of the Rajasuya sacrifice,

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.7.19.20)

bhaviṣyati tavādyaiva vipraputravivāhataḥ tacchrutvā vacanaṁ rājā māyayā tasya mohitaḥ

and that merit will accrue to you this very day through this brahmin son's wedding. Hearing this speech, the king, deluded by his illusion,

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.7.19.21)

vowed 'so be it,' and said nothing further; and by the path that he had been shown, he set out toward the city.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.7.19.22)

viśvāmitro'pi rājānaṁ vañcayitvā''śramaṁ yayau kṛtodvāhavidhistāvadviśvāmitro'bravīnnṛpam

Vishvamitra too, having thus deceived the king, went off to his hermitage; and as soon as the marriage rite was completed, Vishvamitra said to the king —

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.7.19.23)

vedīmadhye nṛpādya tvaṁ dehi dānaṁ yathepsitam rājovāca kiṁ te'bhīṣṭaṁ dvija brūhi dadāmi vāñchitaṁ kila

O king, here in the middle of this altar, give today whatever gift you please. The king said: O brahmin, tell me whatever you desire, and I shall surely give you what you wish.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.7.19.24)

adeyamapi saṁsare yaśaḥkāmo'smi sāmpratam vyarthaṁ hi jīvitaṁ tasya vibhavaṁ prāpya yena vai

Even what is, in this world, ordinarily beyond giving — that too I shall give — for today I desire only fame; surely the life of one is in vain who, having attained prosperity,

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.7.19.25)

nopārjitaṁ yaśaḥ śuddhaṁ paralokasukhapradam viśvāmitra uvāca rājyaṁ dehi mahārāja varāya saparicchadam

fails to earn pure renown, which grants happiness in the world beyond. Vishvamitra said: O great king, give me, as your gift, the kingdom itself with all its retinue,

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.7.19.26)

gajāśvaratharatnāḍhyaṁ vedīmadhye'tipāvane vyāsa uvāca mohito māyayā tasya śrutvā vākyaṁ munernṛpaḥ

rich in elephants, horses, chariots, and jewels, here upon this most sacred altar. Vyasa said: The king, still deluded by his illusion, hearing the sage's words,

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.7.19.27)

dattamityuktavān rājyamavicārya yadṛcchayā gṛhītamiti taṁ prāha viśvāmitro'tiniṣṭhuraḥ

said, without any deliberation, quite of his own accord: 'This kingdom is given.' The exceedingly harsh Vishvamitra said at once: 'It is accepted.'

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.7.19.28)

dakṣiṇāṁ dehi rājendra dānayogyāṁ mahāmate dakṣiṇārahitaṁ dānaṁ niṣphalaṁ manurabravīt

O foremost of kings, O great-minded one, now give also the gift proper to accompany a dana — a gift given without its sacrificial fee is fruitless, so Manu has declared.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.7.19.29)

tasmāddānaphalāya tvaṁ yathoktāṁ dehi dakṣiṇām ityuktastu tadā rājā tamuvācātivismitaḥ

Therefore, for the fruit of your gift to be complete, give also the proper sacrificial fee. When this was said, the king, greatly astonished, replied to him —

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.7.19.30)

brūhi kiyaddhanaṁ tubhyaṁ deyaṁ svāmin mayādhunā dakṣiṇāniṣkrayaṁ sādho vada tāvatpramāṇakam

O lord, tell me — how much wealth must I now give you? O righteous one, name the sum of the fee, and tell me its exact measure.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.7.19.31)

dānapūrtyai pradāsyāmi svastho bhava tapodhana viśvāmitrastu tacchrutvā tamāha medinīpatim

I shall give it, to complete this gift, O treasury of austerity — set your mind at ease. Hearing this, Vishvamitra said to that lord of the earth —

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.7.19.32)

hemabhāradvayaṁ sārdhaṁ dakṣiṇāṁ dehi sāmpratam dāsyāmīti pratiśrutya tasmai rājātivismitaḥ

Now give me, as the sacrificial fee, two-and-a-half loads of gold. Hearing this, the king, exceedingly astonished, nonetheless vowed to give it to him,

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.7.19.33)

tadaiva sainikāstasya vīkṣamāṇāḥ samāgatāḥ dṛṣṭvā mahīpatiṁ vyagraṁ tuṣṭuvuste mudānvitāḥ

and just then his soldiers, watching, arrived there too; and, seeing the king thus preoccupied, they, rejoicing, began to praise him.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.7.19.34)

vyāsa uvāca śrutvā teṣāṁ vaco rājā noktvā kiñcicchubhāśubham cintayansvakṛtaṁ karma yayāvantaḥpure tataḥ

Vyasa said: Hearing their words, the king, saying nothing at all, whether good or ill, and pondering upon his own deed, made his way to the inner apartments.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.7.19.35)

kiṁ mayā svīkṛtaṁ dānaṁ sarvasvaṁ yatsamarpitam vañcito'haṁ dvijenātra vane pāṭaccarairiva

What manner of gift have I accepted, that I have surrendered everything I possess — I have been robbed by this brahmin here, as if by highwaymen in the forest.

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.7.19.36)

rājyaṁ sopaskaraṁ tasmai mayā sarvaṁ pratiśrutam bhāradvayaṁ suvarṇasya sārdhaṁ ca dakṣiṇā punaḥ

I have vowed to give him the kingdom together with all its wealth, and along with it two-and-a-half loads of gold as the sacrificial fee.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.7.19.37)

kiṁ karomi matirbhraṣṭā na jñātaṁ kapaṭaṁ muneḥ pratārito'haṁ sahasā brāhmaṇena tapasvinā

What shall I do now? My reason has failed me — I could not perceive the sage's deceit; that ascetic brahmin has, in an instant, utterly beguiled me.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.7.19.38)

na jāne daivakāryaṁ vai hā daiva kiṁ bhaviṣyati iti cintāparo rājā gṛhaṁ prāpto'tivihvalaḥ

I cannot fathom the workings of fate — alas, fate, what now will come to pass? Thus sunk in anxiety, the king, utterly overwhelmed, arrived at his home.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.7.19.39)

patiṁ cintāparaṁ dṛṣtvā rājñī papraccha kāraṇam kiṁ prabho vimanā bhāsi kā cintā brūhi sāmpratam

Seeing her husband sunk in anxiety, the queen asked him the reason: O lord, why do you appear so downcast? What is your worry — tell me at once.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.7.19.40)

vanātputraḥ samāyāto rājasūyaḥ kṛtaḥ purā kasmācchocasi rājendra śokasya kāraṇaṁ vada

Your son has returned from the forest, and the Rajasuya sacrifice has already been accomplished — O foremost of kings, then for what do you grieve? Tell me the cause of this sorrow.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.7.19.41)

nārātirvidyate kvāpi balavāndurbalo'pi vā varuṇo'pi susantuṣṭaḥ kṛtakṛtyo'si bhūtale

You have no enemy anywhere, neither strong nor weak; even Varuna is fully satisfied, and you have accomplished all that need be accomplished on this earth.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.7.19.42)

cintayā kṣīyate deho nāsti cintāsamā mṛtiḥ tyajyatāṁ nṛpaśārdūla svastho bhava vicakṣaṇa

The body wastes away through worry — there is no death equal to worry; abandon it, O tiger among kings; be at ease, O wise one.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.7.19.43)

tanniśamya priyāvākyaṁ prītipūrvaṁ narādhipaḥ provāca kiñciccintāyāḥ kāraṇaṁ ca śubhāśubham

Hearing his beloved wife's words, the king, with affection, told her something of the cause of his anxiety, both the fair and the grievous parts of it.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.7.19.44)

bhojanaṁ na cakārā'sau cintāviṣṭastathā nṛpaḥ suptvāpi śayane śubhre lebhe nidrāṁ na bhūmipaḥ

The king, sunk in anxiety, did not even eat; and though he lay upon his splendid bed, no sleep came to that lord of the earth.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.7.19.45)

prātarutthāya cintārto yāvatsandhyādikāḥ kriyāḥ karoti nṛpatistāvadviśvāmitraḥ samāgataḥ

Rising in the morning, still tormented by anxiety, and while the king was performing his morning devotions and the like, Vishvamitra arrived there.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.7.19.46)

kṣatrā nivedito rājñe muniḥ sarvasvahārakaḥ āgatyovāca rājānaṁ praṇamantaṁ punaḥ punaḥ

The gatekeeper announced to the king the arrival of that sage who had claimed his entire fortune; and the sage, arriving, said to the king, who bowed again and again before him —

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.7.19.47)

viśvāmitra uvāca rājaṁstyaja svarājyaṁ me dehi vācā pratiśrutam suvarṇaṁ spṛśa rājendra satyavāgbhava sāmpratam

Vishvamitra said: O king, relinquish your kingdom, and give me what you have vowed by word; O foremost of kings, touch the gold, and be, this very moment, true to your word.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.7.19.48)

hariścandra uvāca svāmin rājyaṁ tavedaṁ me mayā dattaṁ kilādhunā tyaktvānyatra gamiṣyāmi mā cintā kuru kauśika

Harishchandra said: O lord, this kingdom is now yours indeed — I have already given it to you; O Kaushika, having relinquished it, I shall go elsewhere — have no concern in this matter.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.7.19.49)

sarvasvaṁ mama te brahman gṛhītaṁ vidhivadvibho suvarṇadakṣiṇāṁ dātumaśakto'smyadhunā dvija

O brahmin, O lord, my entire fortune has already been duly received by you; O twice-born one, it is only the gift of gold as sacrificial fee that I am presently unable to give.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.7.19.50)

dānaṁ dadāmi te tāvadyāvanme syāddhanāgamaḥ punaścetkālayogena tadā dāsyāmi dakṣiṇām

Until wealth comes to me by some means, I shall keep striving to give you this gift; and if, in the course of time, it is not yet accomplished, then at last I shall give you the fee.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.7.19.51)

ityuktvā nṛpatiḥ prāha putraṁ bhāryāṁ ca mādhavīm rājyamasmai pradattaṁ vai mayā vedyāṁ suvistaram

So saying, the king said to his son and to his wife Madhavi: I have given this man, upon this very altar, in full and complete measure, my entire kingdom,

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.7.19.52)

hastyaśvarathasaṁyuktaṁ ratnahemasamanvitam tyaktvā trīṇi śarīrāṇi sarvaṁ cāsmai samarpitam

rich in elephants, horses, and chariots, abundant in jewels and gold; and now, save for these three bodies here — my own, my wife's, and my son's — I have surrendered everything to him.

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.7.19.53)

tyaktvāyodhyāṁ gamiṣyāmi kutracidvanagahvare gṛhṇātvidaṁ muniḥ samyagrājyaṁ sarvasamṛddhimat

Leaving Ayodhya, I shall go to dwell in some forest cave; let this sage now take full possession of this kingdom, rich in every prosperity.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.7.19.54)

ityābhāṣya sutaṁ bhāryāṁ hariścandraḥ svamandirāt vinirgataḥ sudharmātmā mānayaṁstaṁ dvijottamam

So saying, having spoken to his son and wife, the righteous-souled Harishchandra, still paying homage to that excellent brahmin, departed from his own palace.

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.7.19.55)

vrajantaṁ bhūpatiṁ vīkṣya bhāryāputrāvubhāvapi cintāturau sudīnāsyau jagmatuḥ pṛṣṭhatastadā

Seeing the king departing thus, both his wife and his son, overcome with anxiety, their faces most wretched, followed behind him at that moment.

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.7.19.56)

hāhākāro mahānāsīnnagare vīkṣya tāṁstathā cukruśuḥ prāṇinaḥ sarve sāketapuravāsinaḥ

Seeing them depart in this manner, a great outcry of lamentation arose throughout the city; all the creatures dwelling in Saketapura began to weep aloud.

Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.7.19.57)

Alas, O king, what deed is this that has come to pass — from where has this affliction descended? O great king, you have been cheated by a most unjust turn of fate!

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.7.19.58)

sarve varṇāstadā duḥkhamāpnuyustaṁ mahīpatim vilokya bhāryayā sārdhaṁ putreṇa ca mahātmanā

Beholding that great king departing thus, together with his wife and his noble-souled son, people of every class then felt the deepest sorrow.

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.7.19.59)

ninindurbrāhmaṇaṁ taṁ tu durācāraṁ puraukasaḥ dhūrto'yamiti bhāṣanto duḥkhārtā brāhmaṇādayaḥ

The city's people began to condemn that brahmin for such evil conduct; the brahmins and others, tormented by sorrow, spoke of him openly, calling him a swindler.

Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.7.19.60)

nirgatya nagarāttasmādviśvāmitraḥ kṣitīśvaram gacchantaṁ tamuvācedaṁ sametya niṣṭhuraṁ vacaḥ

Leaving the city, Vishvamitra went up to the king as he was departing and spoke this harsh word to him —

Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.7.19.61)

dakṣiṇāyāḥ suvarṇaṁ me dattvā gaccha narādhipa nāhaṁ dāsyāmi vā brūhi mayā tyaktaṁ suvarṇakam

O king, go only after having given me the gold of the sacrificial fee; or else say plainly that you will not give it — tell me, where is this gold you have forsaken?

Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.7.19.62)

rājyaṁ gṛhāṇa vā sarvaṁ lobhaśceddhṛti vartate dattaṁ cenmanyase rājan dehi yattatpratiśrutam

Or, if greed still lingers within your heart, then take back the whole kingdom yourself; but, O king, if you hold that this kingdom has truly been given, then give also what you have vowed.

Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.7.19.63)

evaṁ bruvantaṁ gādheyaṁ hariścandro mahīpatiḥ praṇipatya sudīnātmā kṛtāñjalipuṭo'bravīt

To the son of Gadhi (Vishvamitra) speaking thus, King Harishchandra, utterly wretched, bowing down and with joined palms, said this —
