Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.7.2.1)

ममाख्याहि महाभाग राज्ञां वंशं सुविस्तरम् । सूर्यान्वयप्रसूतानां धर्मज्ञानां विशेषतः

mamākhyāhi mahābhāga rājñāṁ vaṁśaṁ suvistaram sūryānvayaprasūtānāṁ dharmajñānāṁ viśeṣataḥ

[Janamejaya continued:] Tell me, O greatly fortunate one, in full detail the lineage of kings — especially of the righteous kings born in the Solar line.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.7.2.2)

शृणु भारत वक्ष्यामि रविवंशस्य विस्तरम् । यथा श्रुतं मया पूर्वं नारदादृषिसत्तमात्

śṛṇu bhārata vakṣyāmi ravivaṁśasya vistaram yathā śrutaṁ mayā pūrvaṁ nāradādṛṣisattamāt

Vyasa said: Listen, O descendant of Bharata; I shall tell the full account of the Solar dynasty, as I once heard it from Narada, the best of sages.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.7.2.3)

एकदा नारदः श्रीमान्सरस्वत्यास्तटे शुभे । आजगामाश्रमे पुण्ये विचरन्स्वेच्छया मुनिः

ekadā nāradaḥ śrīmānsarasvatyāstaṭe śubhe ājagāmāśrame puṇye vicaransvecchayā muniḥ

Once, the glorious sage Narada, wandering at will, came to my sacred hermitage on the auspicious bank of the Sarasvati.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.7.2.4)

प्रणम्य शिरसा पादौ तस्याग्रे संस्थितस्तदा । ततस्तस्यासनं दत्त्वा कृत्वार्हणमथादरात्

praṇamya śirasā pādau tasyāgre saṁsthitastadā tatastasyāsanaṁ dattvā kṛtvārhaṇamathādarāt

Bowing my head to his feet, I stood before him; then, offering him a seat, I honored him with reverence.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.7.2.5)

विधिवत्पूजयित्वा तमुक्तवान्वचनं त्विदम् । पावितोऽहं मुनिश्रेष्ठ पूज्यस्यागमनेन वै

vidhivatpūjayitvā tamuktavānvacanaṁ tvidam pāvito'haṁ muniśreṣṭha pūjyasyāgamanena vai

Having worshipped him duly, I spoke these words to him: 'I am purified, O best of sages, by the arrival of one so worthy of worship.'

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.7.2.6)

कथां कथय सर्वज्ञ राज्ञां चरितसंयुताम् । राजानो ये समाख्याताः सप्तमेऽस्मिन्मनोः कुले

kathāṁ kathaya sarvajña rājñāṁ caritasaṁyutām rājāno ye samākhyātāḥ saptame'sminmanoḥ kule

'Tell me, O all-knowing one, the tale of the deeds of the kings — those spoken of in this seventh line of Manu.'

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.7.2.7)

तेषामुत्पत्तिरतुला चरितं परमाद्भुतम् । श्रोतुकामोऽस्म्यहं ब्रह्मन् सूर्यवंशस्य विस्तरम्

teṣāmutpattiratulā caritaṁ paramādbhutam śrotukāmo'smyahaṁ brahman sūryavaṁśasya vistaram

'Their origin is unparalleled, their deeds most wondrous; I long to hear, O Brahmin, the full extent of the Solar dynasty.'

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.7.2.8)

समाख्याहि मुनिश्रेष्ठ समासव्यासपूर्वकम् । इति पृष्टो मया राजन्नारदः परमार्थवित्

samākhyāhi muniśreṣṭha samāsavyāsapūrvakam iti pṛṣṭo mayā rājannāradaḥ paramārthavit

'Recount it, O best of sages, both in brief and in detail.' Thus questioned by me, O king, Narada, the knower of highest truth —

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.7.2.9)

उवाच प्रहसन्प्रीतः समाभाष्य मुदान्वयम् । नारद उवाच । शृणु सत्यवतीसूनो राज्ञां वंशमनुत्तमम्

uvāca prahasanprītaḥ samābhāṣya mudānvayam nārada uvāca śṛṇu satyavatīsūno rājñāṁ vaṁśamanuttamam

— smiling with delight, addressed me warmly. Narada said: 'Listen, O son of Satyavati, to this supreme lineage of kings —'

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.7.2.10)

पावनं कर्णसुखदं धर्मज्ञानादिभिर्युतम् । ब्रह्मा पूर्वं जगत्कर्ता नाभिपङ्कजसम्भवः

pāvanaṁ karṇasukhadaṁ dharmajñānādibhiryutam brahmā pūrvaṁ jagatkartā nābhipaṅkajasambhavaḥ

'— purifying, pleasing to the ear, filled with the knowledge of dharma. In the beginning, Brahma, maker of the world, arose from the lotus of the navel —'

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.7.2.11)

विष्णोरिति पुराणेषु प्रसिद्धः परिकीर्तितः । सर्वज्ञः सर्वकर्तासौ स्वयम्भूः सर्वशक्तिमान्

viṣṇoriti purāṇeṣu prasiddhaḥ parikīrtitaḥ sarvajñaḥ sarvakartāsau svayambhūḥ sarvaśaktimān

'— of Vishnu; so it is renowned in the Puranas. He, all-knowing, the doer of all, the Self-born, possessed of all power —'

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.7.2.12)

तपस्तप्त्वा स विश्वात्मा वर्षाणामयुतं पुरा । सृष्टिकामः शिवां ध्यात्वा प्राप्य शक्तिमनुत्तमाम्

tapastaptvā sa viśvātmā varṣāṇāmayutaṁ purā sṛṣṭikāmaḥ śivāṁ dhyātvā prāpya śaktimanuttamām

'— that soul of the universe performed austerity for ten thousand years in ancient time; desiring creation, he meditated on the auspicious Devi and obtained her supreme power.'

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.7.2.13)

पुत्रानुत्पदयामास मानसाञ्छुभलक्षणान् । मरीचिः प्रथिस्तेषामभवत्सृष्टिकर्मणि

putrānutpadayāmāsa mānasāñchubhalakṣaṇān marīciḥ prathisteṣāmabhavatsṛṣṭikarmaṇi

'He begot mind-born sons of auspicious marks; foremost among them in the work of creation was Marichi.'

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.7.2.14)

तस्य पुत्रोऽतिविख्यातः कश्यपः सर्वसम्मतः । त्रयोदशैव तस्यासन्भार्या दक्षसुताः किल

tasya putro'tivikhyātaḥ kaśyapaḥ sarvasammataḥ trayodaśaiva tasyāsanbhāryā dakṣasutāḥ kila

'His most renowned son, honored by all, was Kashyapa; he had exactly thirteen wives, the daughters of Daksha.'

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.7.2.15)

देवाः सर्वे समुत्पन्ना दैत्या यक्षाश्च पन्नगाः । पशवः पक्षिणश्चैव तस्मात्सृष्टिस्तु काश्यपी

devāḥ sarve samutpannā daityā yakṣāśca pannagāḥ paśavaḥ pakṣiṇaścaiva tasmātsṛṣṭistu kāśyapī

'From them were born all the gods, Daityas, Yakshas, and serpents, as well as beasts and birds — this is the creation sprung from Kashyapa.'

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.7.2.16)

देवानां प्रथितः सूर्यो विवस्वान्नाम तस्य तु । तस्य पुत्रः स विख्यातो वैवस्वतमनुर्नृपः

devānāṁ prathitaḥ sūryo vivasvānnāma tasya tu tasya putraḥ sa vikhyāto vaivasvatamanurnṛpaḥ

'Renowned among the gods was the Sun, named Vivasvan; his son was the celebrated King Vaivasvata Manu.'

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.7.2.17)

तस्य पुत्रस्तथेक्ष्वाकुः सूर्यवंशविवर्धनः । नवाभवन्सुतास्तस्य मनोरिक्ष्वाकुपूर्वजाः

tasya putrastathekṣvākuḥ sūryavaṁśavivardhanaḥ navābhavansutāstasya manorikṣvākupūrvajāḥ

'His son again was Ikshvaku, the increaser of the Solar line. Manu had nine sons, with Ikshvaku as the eldest.'

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.7.2.18)

तेषां नामानि राजेन्द्र शृणुष्वैकमनाः पुनः । इक्ष्वाकुरथ नाभागो धृष्टः शर्यातिरेव च

teṣāṁ nāmāni rājendra śṛṇuṣvaikamanāḥ punaḥ ikṣvākuratha nābhāgo dhṛṣṭaḥ śaryātireva ca

'Hear their names again, O lord of kings, with an undivided mind: Ikshvaku, then Nabhaga, Dhrishta, and Sharyati —'

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.7.2.19)

नरिष्यन्तस्तथा प्रांशुर्नृगो दिष्टश्च सप्तमः । करूषश्च पृषध्रश्च नवैते मानवाः स्मृताः

nariṣyantastathā prāṁśurnṛgo diṣṭaśca saptamaḥ karūṣaśca pṛṣadhraśca navaite mānavāḥ smṛtāḥ

'— Narishyanta, and Pramshu, Nriga, and Dishta the seventh, then Karusha and Prishadhra — these nine are known as sons of Manu.'

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.7.2.20)

इक्ष्वाकुस्तु मनोः पुत्रः प्रथमः समजायत । तस्य पुत्रशतं चासीज्ज्येष्ठो विकुक्षिरात्मवान्

ikṣvākustu manoḥ putraḥ prathamaḥ samajāyata tasya putraśataṁ cāsījjyeṣṭho vikukṣirātmavān

'Ikshvaku was Manu's firstborn son; he had a hundred sons, the eldest and self-possessed of whom was Vikukshi.'

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.7.2.21)

नवानां वंशविस्तारं सङ्क्षेपेण निशामय । शूराणां मनुपुत्राणां मनोरन्तरजन्मनाम्

navānāṁ vaṁśavistāraṁ saṅkṣepeṇa niśāmaya śūrāṇāṁ manuputrāṇāṁ manorantarajanmanām

'Now hear in brief the expansion of the lines of these nine heroic sons of Manu, born in this Manvantara.'

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.7.2.22)

नाभागस्य तु पुत्रोऽभूदम्बरीषः प्रतापवान् । धर्मज्ञः सत्यसन्धश्च प्रजापालनतत्परः

nābhāgasya tu putro'bhūdambarīṣaḥ pratāpavān dharmajñaḥ satyasandhaśca prajāpālanatatparaḥ

'Nabhaga's son was the mighty Ambarisha, a knower of dharma, true to his word, devoted to the protection of his subjects.'

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.7.2.23)

धृष्टात्तु धार्ष्टकं क्षत्रं ब्रह्मभूतमजायत । सङ्ग्रामकातरं सम्यग्ब्रह्मकर्मरतं तथा

dhṛṣṭāttu dhārṣṭakaṁ kṣatraṁ brahmabhūtamajāyata saṅgrāmakātaraṁ samyagbrahmakarmarataṁ tathā

'From Dhrishta arose the Dharshtaka Kshatriyas, who came to resemble Brahmins — averse to warfare, wholly devoted to Brahminical duties.'

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.7.2.24)

शर्यातेस्तनयश्चाभूदानर्तो नाम विश्रुतः । सुकन्या च तथा पुत्री रूपलावण्यसंयुता

śaryātestanayaścābhūdānarto nāma viśrutaḥ sukanyā ca tathā putrī rūpalāvaṇyasaṁyutā

'Sharyati's son was the celebrated Anarta; he also had a daughter, Sukanya, endowed with beauty and grace.'

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.7.2.25)

च्यवनाय सुता दत्ता राज्ञाप्यन्धाय सुन्दरी । मुनिः सुलोचनो जातस्तस्याः शीलगुणेन ह

cyavanāya sutā dattā rājñāpyandhāya sundarī muniḥ sulocano jātastasyāḥ śīlaguṇena ha

'That beautiful daughter was given by the king to Chyavana, though he was blind; through her virtuous character the sage came to have good eyes —'

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.7.2.26)

विहितो रविपुत्राभ्यामश्विभ्यामिति नः श्रुतम् । जनमेजय उवाच । सन्देहोऽयं महान् ब्रह्मन् कथायां कथितस्त्वया

vihito raviputrābhyāmaśvibhyāmiti naḥ śrutam janamejaya uvāca sandeho'yaṁ mahān brahman kathāyāṁ kathitastvayā

'— this was brought about by the two sons of the Sun, the Ashvins — so we have heard.' Janamejaya said: 'O Brahmin, a great doubt arises in me from this tale you have told —'

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.7.2.27)

यद्राजा मुनयेऽन्धाय दत्ता पुत्री सुलोचना । कुरूपा गुणहीना वा नारी लक्षणवर्जिता

yadrājā munaye'ndhāya dattā putrī sulocanā kurūpā guṇahīnā vā nārī lakṣaṇavarjitā

'— that the king gave his daughter, one with beautiful eyes, to a blind sage. Was she then ugly, or lacking virtue, devoid of auspicious marks —'

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.7.2.28)

पुत्री यदा भवेद्राजा तदान्धाय प्रयच्छति । ज्ञात्वान्धं सुमुखीं कस्माद्दत्तवान्नृपसत्तमः

putrī yadā bhavedrājā tadāndhāya prayacchati jñātvāndhaṁ sumukhīṁ kasmāddattavānnṛpasattamaḥ

'— that a king would give such a daughter to a blind man? Knowing him blind, why did that best of kings give a daughter of such beautiful face?'

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.7.2.29)

कारणं ब्रूहि मे ब्रह्मन्ननुग्राह्योऽस्मि सर्वदा । सूत उवाच । इति राज्ञो वचः श्रुत्वा परीक्षितसुतस्य वै

kāraṇaṁ brūhi me brahmannanugrāhyo'smi sarvadā sūta uvāca iti rājño vacaḥ śrutvā parīkṣitasutasya vai

'Tell me the reason, O Brahmin; I am ever fit to receive your grace.' Suta said: Hearing these words of the king, the son of Parikshit —

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.7.2.30)

द्वैपायनः प्रसन्नात्मा तमुवाच हसन्निव । व्यास उवाच । वैवस्वतसुतः श्रीमाञ्छर्यातिर्नाम पार्थिवः

dvaipāyanaḥ prasannātmā tamuvāca hasanniva vyāsa uvāca vaivasvatasutaḥ śrīmāñcharyātirnāma pārthivaḥ

— Dvaipayana [Vyasa], with a pleased mind, spoke to him, smiling. Vyasa said: 'The glorious son of Vaivasvata Manu, the king named Sharyati —'

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.7.2.31)

तस्य स्त्रीणां सहस्राणि चत्वार्यासन्परिग्रहाः । राजपुत्र्यः सरूपाश्च सर्वलक्षणसंयुताः

tasya strīṇāṁ sahasrāṇi catvāryāsanparigrahāḥ rājaputryaḥ sarūpāśca sarvalakṣaṇasaṁyutāḥ

'— had four thousand wives, all princesses, beautiful in form and endowed with every auspicious mark.'

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.7.2.32)

पत्न्यः प्रेमयुताः सर्वाः प्रिया राज्ञः सुसम्मताः । एका पुत्री तु तासां वै सुकन्या नाम सुन्दरी

patnyaḥ premayutāḥ sarvāḥ priyā rājñaḥ susammatāḥ ekā putrī tu tāsāṁ vai sukanyā nāma sundarī

'All his queens were loving, dear to the king and held in high regard. Among them was one daughter, the beautiful one named Sukanya —'

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.7.2.33)

पितुः प्रिया च मातॄणां सर्वासां चारुहासिनी । नगरान्नातिदूरेऽभूत्सरो मानससन्निभम्

pituḥ priyā ca mātṝṇāṁ sarvāsāṁ cāruhāsinī nagarānnātidūre'bhūtsaro mānasasannibham

'— dear to her father and to all her mothers, sweet of smile. Not far from the city there was a lake resembling Lake Manasa.'

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.7.2.34)

बद्धसोपानमार्गं च स्वच्छपानीयपूरितम् । हंसकारण्डवाकीर्णं चक्रवाकोपशोभितम्

baddhasopānamārgaṁ ca svacchapānīyapūritam haṁsakāraṇḍavākīrṇaṁ cakravākopaśobhitam

'It had steps built along its banks and was filled with clear water; it was thronged with swans and karandava-ducks, adorned with chakravaka birds —'

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.7.2.35)

दात्यूहसारसाकीर्णं सर्वपक्षिगणावृतम् । पञ्चधाकमलोपेतं चञ्चरीकसुसेवितम्

dātyūhasārasākīrṇaṁ sarvapakṣigaṇāvṛtam pañcadhākamalopetaṁ cañcarīkasusevitam

'— crowded with dātyūha birds and cranes, surrounded by flocks of every kind of bird, covered with lotuses of five colors, frequented by humming bees —'

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.7.2.36)

पार्श्वतश्च द्रुमाकीर्णं वेष्टितं पादपैः शुभैः । सालैस्तमालैः सरलैः पुन्नागाशोकमण्डितम्

pārśvataśca drumākīrṇaṁ veṣṭitaṁ pādapaiḥ śubhaiḥ sālaistamālaiḥ saralaiḥ punnāgāśokamaṇḍitam

'— thick with trees on every side, encircled by auspicious trees — sal, tamala, pine — adorned with punnaga and ashoka trees —'

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.7.2.37)

वटाश्वत्थकदम्बैश्च कदलीखण्डराजितम् । जम्बीरैर्बीजपूरैश्च खर्जूरैः पनसैस्तथा

vaṭāśvatthakadambaiśca kadalīkhaṇḍarājitam jambīrairbījapūraiśca kharjūraiḥ panasaistathā

'— banyan, ashvattha, and kadamba trees, graced with groves of plantain, with citron, pomegranate, dates and jackfruit —'

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.7.2.38)

क्रमुकैर्नारिकेलैश्च केतकैः काञ्चनद्रुमैः । यूथिकाजालकैः शुभ्रैः संवृतं मल्लिकागणैः

kramukairnārikelaiśca ketakaiḥ kāñcanadrumaiḥ yūthikājālakaiḥ śubhraiḥ saṁvṛtaṁ mallikāgaṇaiḥ

'— with areca and coconut palms, ketaki and golden-hued trees, covered with clusters of white jasmine flowers —'

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.7.2.39)

जम्ब्वाम्रतिन्तिणीभिश्च करञ्जकुटजावृतम् । पलाशनिम्बखदिरबिल्वामलकमण्डितम्

jambvāmratintiṇībhiśca karañjakuṭajāvṛtam palāśanimbakhadirabilvāmalakamaṇḍitam

'— with jambu, mango, and tamarind trees, surrounded by karanja and kutaja, adorned with palasha, neem, khadira, bilva, and amalaka trees.'

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.7.2.40)

बभूव कोकिलारावः केकास्वनविराजितम् । तत्समीपे शुभे देशे पादपानां गणावृते

babhūva kokilārāvaḥ kekāsvanavirājitam tatsamīpe śubhe deśe pādapānāṁ gaṇāvṛte

'There was the call of cuckoos, and the place resounded with the cry of peacocks; nearby, in that auspicious tree-thronged spot —'

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.7.2.41)

भार्गवश्च्यवनः शान्तस्तापसः संस्थितो मुनिः । ज्ञात्वासौ विजनं स्थानं तपस्तेपे समाहितः

bhārgavaścyavanaḥ śāntastāpasaḥ saṁsthito muniḥ jñātvāsau vijanaṁ sthānaṁ tapastepe samāhitaḥ

'— the peaceful ascetic-sage Chyavana, of Bhrigu's line, had taken up residence; finding the spot solitary, he performed austerity there with concentrated mind.'

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.7.2.42)

कृत्वा दृढासनं मौनमाधाय जितमारुतः । इन्द्रियाणि च संयम्य त्यक्ताहारस्तपोनिधिः

kṛtvā dṛḍhāsanaṁ maunamādhāya jitamārutaḥ indriyāṇi ca saṁyamya tyaktāhārastaponidhiḥ

'Having taken a firm seat, observing silence, having mastered the breath, restraining his senses, that treasury of austerity gave up food —'

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.7.2.43)

जलपानादिरहितो ध्यायन्नास्ते पराम्बिकाम् । सवल्मीकोऽभवद्राजल्लँताभिः परिवेष्टितः

jalapānādirahito dhyāyannāste parāmbikām savalmīko'bhavadrājalla~tābhiḥ pariveṣṭitaḥ

'— even drinking no water, and sat meditating on the supreme Mother. O king, he came to be covered by an anthill, and entwined about with creepers.'

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.7.2.44)

कालेन महता राजन् समाकीर्णः पिपीलिकैः । तथा स संवृतो धीमान्मृत्पिण्ड इव सर्वतः

kālena mahatā rājan samākīrṇaḥ pipīlikaiḥ tathā sa saṁvṛto dhīmānmṛtpiṇḍa iva sarvataḥ

'After a long time, O king, he was overrun by ants, and that wise one became covered on every side, like a mere lump of earth.'

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.7.2.45)

कदाचित्स महीपालः कामिनीगणसंवृतः । आजगाम सरो राजन् विहर्तुमिदमुत्तमम्

kadācitsa mahīpālaḥ kāminīgaṇasaṁvṛtaḥ ājagāma saro rājan vihartumidamuttamam

'Once, that lord of the earth, surrounded by a company of women, came to that excellent lake, O king, to take his pleasure —'

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.7.2.46)

शर्यातिः सुन्दरीवृन्दसंयुतः सलिलेऽमले । क्रीडासक्तो महीपालो बभूव कमलाकरे

śaryātiḥ sundarīvṛndasaṁyutaḥ salile'male krīḍāsakto mahīpālo babhūva kamalākare

'— Sharyati, together with a throng of beautiful women, became absorbed in play in that clear water, that lord of the earth, in that lotus-filled pool.'

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.7.2.47)

सुकन्या वनमासाद्य विजहार सखीवृता । सुमनांसि विचिन्वन्ती चञ्चला चञ्चलोपमा

sukanyā vanamāsādya vijahāra sakhīvṛtā sumanāṁsi vicinvantī cañcalā cañcalopamā

'Sukanya, reaching the woodland, sported there surrounded by her friends, gathering flowers, playful, like playfulness itself.'

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.7.2.48)

सर्वाभरणसंयुक्ता रणच्चरणनूपुरा । चङ्क्रममाणा वल्मीकं च्यवनस्य समासदत्

sarvābharaṇasaṁyuktā raṇaccaraṇanūpurā caṅkramamāṇā valmīkaṁ cyavanasya samāsadat

'Adorned with every ornament, her anklets tinkling as she walked, wandering about, she came upon Chyavana's anthill.'

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.7.2.49)

क्रीडासक्तोपविष्टा सा वल्मीकस्य समीपतः । ददर्श चास्य रन्ध्रे वै खद्योत इव ज्योतिषी

krīḍāsaktopaviṣṭā sā valmīkasya samīpataḥ dadarśa cāsya randhre vai khadyota iva jyotiṣī

'Absorbed in play, seated near the anthill, she saw within its holes two lights gleaming like fireflies.'

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.7.2.50)

किमेतदिति सञ्चिन्त्य समुद्धर्तुं मनो दधे । गृहीत्वा कण्टकं तीक्ष्णं त्वरमाणा कृशोदरी

kimetaditi sañcintya samuddhartuṁ mano dadhe gṛhītvā kaṇṭakaṁ tīkṣṇaṁ tvaramāṇā kṛśodarī

'Wondering, "What is this?", that slender-waisted girl took a sharp thorn, eager to poke it out.'

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.7.2.51)

सा दृष्टा मुनिना बाला समीपस्था कृतोद्यमा । विचरन्ती सुकेशान्ता मन्मथस्येव कामिनी

sā dṛṣṭā muninā bālā samīpasthā kṛtodyamā vicarantī sukeśāntā manmathasyeva kāminī

'That girl, standing near, intent on her purpose, with lovely tresses, wandering about like the beloved of the god of love — was seen by the sage.'

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.7.2.52)

तां वीक्ष्य सुदतीं तत्र क्षामकण्ठस्तपोनिधिः । तामभाषत कल्याणीं किमेतदिति भार्गवः

tāṁ vīkṣya sudatīṁ tatra kṣāmakaṇṭhastaponidhiḥ tāmabhāṣata kalyāṇīṁ kimetaditi bhārgavaḥ

'Seeing that fair-toothed girl there, that treasury of austerity, his throat weakened, the descendant of Bhrigu spoke to her, "What is this you are doing, O gracious one?"'

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.7.2.53)

दूरं गच्छ विशालाक्षि तापसोऽहं वरानने । मा भिन्दस्वाद्य वल्मीकं कण्टकेन कृशोदरि

dūraṁ gaccha viśālākṣi tāpaso'haṁ varānane mā bhindasvādya valmīkaṁ kaṇṭakena kṛśodari

"'Go away, wide-eyed one; I am an ascetic, O fair-faced girl. Do not pierce this anthill today with a thorn, O slender-waisted one!'"

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.7.2.54)

तेनेदं प्रोच्यमानापि सा चास्य न शृणोति वै । किमु खल्विदमित्युक्त्वा निर्बिभेदास्य लोचने

tenedaṁ procyamānāpi sā cāsya na śṛṇoti vai kimu khalvidamityuktvā nirbibhedāsya locane

'Though he spoke thus to her, she did not heed him at all; saying, "What indeed is this?", she pierced right through his eyes.'

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.7.2.55)

दैवेन नोदिता भित्त्वा जगाम नृपकन्यका । क्रीडन्ती शङ्कमाना सा किं कृतं तु मयेति च

daivena noditā bhittvā jagāma nṛpakanyakā krīḍantī śaṅkamānā sā kiṁ kṛtaṁ tu mayeti ca

'Driven by fate, having pierced them, the king's daughter went on, still at play, yet uneasy, wondering, "What have I done?"'

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.7.2.56)

चुक्रोध स तथा विद्धनेत्रः परममन्युमान् । वेदनाभ्यर्दितः कामं परितापं जगाम ह

cukrodha sa tathā viddhanetraḥ paramamanyumān vedanābhyarditaḥ kāmaṁ paritāpaṁ jagāma ha

'His eyes so pierced, he flew into a towering rage, tormented by the pain, and was overcome with intense anguish.'

Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.7.2.57)

शकृन्मूत्रनिरोधोऽभूत्सैनिकानां तु तत्क्षणात् । विशेषेण तु भूपस्य सामात्यस्य समन्ततः

śakṛnmūtranirodho'bhūtsainikānāṁ tu tatkṣaṇāt viśeṣeṇa tu bhūpasya sāmātyasya samantataḥ

'At that very moment, the soldiers\' bowels and bladders became blocked — especially so for the king and his ministers, and for everyone all around.'

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.7.2.58)

गजोष्ट्रतुरगाणां च सर्वेषां प्राणिनां तदा । ततो रुद्धे शकृन्मूत्रे शर्यातिर्दुःखितोऽभवत्

gajoṣṭraturagāṇāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ prāṇināṁ tadā tato ruddhe śakṛnmūtre śaryātirduḥkhito'bhavat

'— of the elephants, camels, and horses, and of all living creatures then. When their bowels and bladders were thus blocked, Sharyati grew distressed.'

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.7.2.59)

सैनिकैः कथितं तस्मै शकृन्मूत्रनिरोधनम् । चिन्तयामास भूपालः कारणं दुःखसम्भवे

sainikaiḥ kathitaṁ tasmai śakṛnmūtranirodhanam cintayāmāsa bhūpālaḥ kāraṇaṁ duḥkhasambhave

'The soldiers reported to him this obstruction of bowel and bladder; the king pondered the cause of this affliction that had arisen.'

Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.7.2.60)

विचिन्त्याह ततो राजा सैनिकान्स्वजनांस्तथा । गृहमागत्य चिन्तार्तः केनेदं दुष्कृतं कृतम्

vicintyāha tato rājā sainikānsvajanāṁstathā gṛhamāgatya cintārtaḥ kenedaṁ duṣkṛtaṁ kṛtam

'Having reflected, the king then said to his soldiers and kinsmen, having returned home, distressed with worry: "By whom has this evil deed been done?"'

Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.7.2.61)

सरसः पश्चिमे भागे वनमध्ये महातपाः । च्यवनस्तापसस्तत्र तपश्चरति दुश्चरम्

sarasaḥ paścime bhāge vanamadhye mahātapāḥ cyavanastāpasastatra tapaścarati duścaram

"'On the western side of the lake, in the midst of the forest, the great ascetic Chyavana practices austerity there, difficult to perform —'"

Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.7.2.62)

केनाप्यपकृतं तत्र तापसेऽग्निसमप्रभे । तस्मात्पीडा समुत्पन्ना सर्वेषामिति निश्चयः

kenāpyapakṛtaṁ tatra tāpase'gnisamaprabhe tasmātpīḍā samutpannā sarveṣāmiti niścayaḥ

"'— someone must have done him harm there, that ascetic radiant as fire; from that alone has this affliction arisen for everyone — this is certain.'"

Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.7.2.63)

तपोवृद्धस्य वृद्धस्य वरिष्ठस्य विशेषतः । केनाप्यपकृतं मन्ये भार्गवस्य महात्मनः

tapovṛddhasya vṛddhasya variṣṭhasya viśeṣataḥ kenāpyapakṛtaṁ manye bhārgavasya mahātmanaḥ

"'I believe someone has wronged that great-souled descendant of Bhrigu, one grown great in austerity, aged, and especially venerable.'"

Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.7.2.64)

ज्ञातं वा यदि वाज्ञातं तस्येदं फलमुत्तमम् । कैश्च दुष्टैः कृतं तस्य हेलनं तापसस्य ह

jñātaṁ vā yadi vājñātaṁ tasyedaṁ phalamuttamam kaiśca duṣṭaiḥ kṛtaṁ tasya helanaṁ tāpasasya ha

"'Whether knowingly or unknowingly, this is the supreme consequence of that deed. By what wicked persons has this insult been done to that ascetic?'"

Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.7.2.65)

इति पृष्टास्तमूचुस्ते सैनिका वेदनार्दिताः । मनोवाक्कायनितं न विद्मोऽपकृतं वयम्

iti pṛṣṭāstamūcuste sainikā vedanārditāḥ manovākkāyanitaṁ na vidmo'pakṛtaṁ vayam

"Thus questioned, those soldiers, afflicted with pain, said to him: 'We know of no wrong done by us, in mind, word, or deed.'"
