Skandha 7 · Chapter 28
The Story of Shatakshi
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.7.28.1)
janamejaya uvāca vicitramidamākhyānaṁ hariścandrasya kīrtitam śatākṣīpādabhaktasya rājarṣerdhārmikasya ca
Janamejaya said: This wondrous account of Harishchandra, that righteous royal sage devoted to the feet of Shatakshi, you have now told.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.7.28.2)
śatākṣī sā kuto jātā devī bhagavatī śivā tatkāraṇaṁ vada mune sārthakaṁ janma me kuru
From where was that Devi, the blessed and auspicious Shatakshi, born? O sage, tell me the cause of it, and make this birth of mine fruitful.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.7.28.3)
ko hi devyā guṇāñchṛṇvaṁstṛptiṁ yāsyati śuddhadhīḥ pade pade'śvamedhasya phalamakṣayyamaśnute
Indeed, what pure-minded person could ever grow weary of hearing the Devi's own qualities? At every step, one attains the imperishable fruit of a horse-sacrifice.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.7.28.4)
vyāsa uvāca śṛṇu rājan pravakṣyāmi śatākṣīsambhavaṁ śubham tavāvācyaṁ na me kiñciddevībhaktasya vidyate
Vyasa said: Listen, O king, I shall now describe the auspicious origin of Shatakshi; for a devotee of the Devi, there is nothing at all that I would leave untold.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.7.28.5)
durgamākhyo mahādaityaḥ pūrvaṁ paramadāruṇaḥ hiraṇyākṣānvaye jāto ruruputro mahākhalaḥ
In ancient times there was a most terrible great daitya named Durgama, born in the lineage of Hiranyaksha, the son of Ruru, exceedingly wicked.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.7.28.6)
devānāṁ tu balaṁ vedo nāśe tasya surā api naṅkṣyantyeva na sandeho vidheyaṁ tāvadeva tat
He reflected: The very strength of the gods is the Veda; with its destruction, the gods too will surely perish, without doubt — therefore that alone must be accomplished.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.7.28.7)
vimṛśyaitattapaścaryāṁ gataḥ kartuṁ himālaye brahmāṇaṁ manasā dhyātvā vāyubhakṣo vyatiṣṭhata
Having thought this, he went to the Himalayas to perform austerities; meditating in his mind upon Brahma, subsisting on air alone, he stood there in tapas.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.7.28.8)
sahasravarṣaparyantaṁ cakāra paramaṁ tapaḥ tejasā tasya lokāstu santaptāḥ sasurāsurāḥ
For a thousand years he performed the most extreme austerity; by his blazing power all the worlds, together with gods and demons, were scorched with heat.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.7.28.9)
tataḥ prasanno bhagavān haṁsārūḍhaścaturmukhaḥ yayau tasmai varaṁ dātuṁ prasannamukhapaṅkajaḥ
Then, being pleased, the four-faced Lord Brahma, mounted upon his swan, his lotus-face gladdened, went to grant him a boon.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.7.28.10)
samādhisthaṁ mīlitākṣaṁ sphuṭamāha caturmukhaḥ varaṁ varaya bhadraṁ te yaste manasi vartate
To that daitya, absorbed in samadhi, his eyes closed, the four-faced Brahma said in a clear voice: Ask for a boon, may all be well with you — whatever is in your heart,
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.7.28.11)
tavādya tapasā tuṣṭo varadeśo'hamāgataḥ śrutvā brahmamukhādvāṇīṁ vyutthitaḥ sa samādhitaḥ
I have come today, pleased by this austerity of yours, to grant a boon. Hearing this voice from Brahma's own mouth, he arose from his meditation,
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.7.28.12)
pūjayitvā varaṁ vavre vedāndehi sureśvara triṣu lokeṣu ye mantrā brāhmaṇeṣu sureṣvapi
and, having worshipped him, he asked for this boon: O lord of gods, give me the Vedas; whatever mantras exist in all three worlds, among the brahmins and among the gods as well,
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.7.28.13)
vidyante te tu sānnidhye mama santu maheśvara balaṁ ca dehi yena syāddevānāṁ ca parājayaḥ
O great lord, let them all pass into my own possession; and give me also the strength by which the gods themselves might be defeated.
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.7.28.14)
iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā tathāstviti vaco vadan jagāma satyalokaṁ tu caturvedeśvaraḥ paraḥ
Hearing his words, saying, 'So be it,' Brahma, the supreme lord of the four Vedas, returned to Satyaloka.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.7.28.15)
tataḥ prabhṛti vipraistu vismṛtā vedarāśayaḥ snānasandhyānityahomaśrāddhayajñajapādayaḥ
From that day forward, brahmins forgot the entire body of the Vedas — bathing rites, twilight prayers, the daily fire-oblation, ancestral rites, sacrifices, recitation, and all the rest,
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.7.28.16)
viluptā dharaṇīpṛṣṭhe hāhākāro mahānabhūt kimidaṁ kimidaṁ ceti viprā ūcuḥ parasparam
all of it vanished from the face of the earth, and a great outcry arose; crying, 'What is this, what is this,' the brahmins said to one another —
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.7.28.17)
vedābhāvāttadasmābhiḥ kartavyaṁ kimataḥ param iti bhūmau mahānarthe jāte paramadāruṇe
in the absence of the Vedas, what else is there now for us to do? Thus, as this most terrible and grave calamity arose upon the earth,
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.7.28.18)
nirjarāḥ sajarā jātā havirbhāgādyabhāvataḥ rurodha sa tadā daityo nagarīmamarāvatīm
for want of their share of the oblations, the gods, though otherwise ageless, became subject to age and decay; and at that time that daitya laid siege to the city of Amaravati.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.7.28.19)
aśaktāstena te yoddhuṁ vajradehāsureṇa ca palāyanaṁ tadā kṛtvā nirgatā nirjarāḥ kvacit
Unable to fight against that adamant-bodied demon, those once-ageless gods, fleeing, went off to hide themselves elsewhere,
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.7.28.20)
nilayaṁ giridurgeṣu ratnasānuguhāsu ca saṁsthitāḥ paramāṁ śaktiṁ dhyāyantaste parāmbikām
taking refuge in mountain fastnesses and in the jewel-studded caves of the peaks, and there they dwelt, meditating upon the Supreme Shakti, the great Mother.
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.7.28.21)
agnau homādyabhāvāttu vṛṣṭyabhāvo'pyabhūnnṛpa vṛṣṭerabhāve saṁśuṣkaṁ nirjalaṁ cāpi bhūtalam
Because there was no more oblation offered into the fire, O king, there came also a failure of rain; and, from the failure of rain, this entire earth became parched and waterless.
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.7.28.22)
kūpavāpītaḍāgāśca saritaḥ śuṣkatāṁ gatāḥ anāvṛṣṭiriyaṁ rājannabhūcca śatavārṣikī
Wells, step-wells, tanks, and rivers all dried up; O king, this drought continued for a full hundred years.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.7.28.23)
mṛtāḥ prajāśca bahudhā gomahiṣyādayastathā gṛhe gṛhe manuṣyāṇāmabhavacchavasaṅgrahaḥ
The people died in great numbers, and cattle, buffaloes, and other beasts likewise perished; in every household of men, heaps of the dead accumulated.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.7.28.24)
anarthe tvevamudbhūte brāhmaṇāḥ śāntacetasaḥ gatvā himavataḥ pārśve rirādhayiṣavaḥ śivam
When this calamity had thus arisen, the brahmins, their hearts stilled, wishing to propitiate the auspicious Devi, went to the foot of the Himalayas,
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.7.28.25)
samādhidhyānapūjābhirdevīṁ tuṣṭuvuranvaham nirāhārāstadāsaktāstāmeva śaraṇaṁ yayuḥ
and, through meditation, contemplation, and worship, began daily to praise the Devi; taking no food, wholly absorbed in her, they took refuge in her alone.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.7.28.26)
dayāṁ kuru maheśāni pāmareṣu janeṣu hi sarvāparādhayukteṣu naitacchlāghyaṁ tavāmbike
O great goddess, show compassion upon these wretched creatures; O mother, though they are laden with every offense, it does not befit you to praise their punishment.
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.7.28.27)
kopaṁ saṁhara deveśi sarvāntaryāmirūpiṇi tvayā yathā preryate'yaṁ karoti sa tathā janaḥ
O goddess of gods, withdraw your wrath, O you who dwell as the inner witness of all; whatever this creature does, he does only as you yourself have impelled him.
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.7.28.28)
nānyā gatirjanasyāsya kiṁ paśyasi punaḥ punaḥ yathecchasi tathā kartuṁ samarthāsi maheśvari
This creature has no other refuge; why do you look on, again and again? You are able to do whatever you wish, O great goddess.
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.7.28.29)
samuddhara maheśāni saṅkaṭātparamotthitāt jīvanena vināsmākaṁ kathaṁ syātsthitirambike
O great goddess, deliver us from this supreme calamity; O mother, without life itself, how could our very existence continue?
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.7.28.30)
prasīda tvaṁ maheśāni prasīda jagadambike anantakoṭibrahmāṇḍanāyike te namo namaḥ
O great goddess, be gracious; O mother of the universe, be gracious; O sovereign of countless millions of worlds, we bow to you, again and again.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.7.28.31)
namaḥ kūṭastharūpāyai cidrūpāyai namo namaḥ namo vedāntavedyāyai bhuvaneśyai namo namaḥ
Homage to her whose form is the unchanging witness, homage again and again to her who is pure consciousness; homage again and again to Bhuvaneshvari, known through the Vedanta.
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.7.28.32)
neti netīti vākyairyā bodhyate sakalāgamaiḥ tāṁ sarvakāraṇāṁ devīṁ sarvabhāvena sannatāḥ
She whom all the scriptures point to through the very words, 'not this, not this' — to that Devi, the very cause of all things, we bowed with our whole being.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.7.28.33)
iti samprārthitā devī bhuvaneśī maheśvarī anantākṣimayaṁ rūpaṁ darśayāmāsa pārvatī
Thus supplicated, the Devi Bhuvaneshi, the great Parvati, showed forth her own form, endowed with countless eyes.
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.7.28.34)
nīlāñjanasamaprakhyaṁ nīlapadmāyatekṣaṇam sukarkaśasamottuṅgavṛttapīnaghanastanam
Of a hue like dark collyrium, with eyes wide as blue lotuses, with breasts most firm, high, round, full, and dense —
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.7.28.35)
bāṇamuṣṭiṁ ca kamalaṁ puṣpapallavamūlakān śākādīnphalasaṁyuktānanantarasasaṁyutān
holding in her hands a sheaf of rice-shoots and a lotus, flowers, tender sprouts, and roots, and vegetables together with their fruits, all imbued with infinite savor,
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.7.28.36)
kṣuttṛḍjarāpahān hastairbibhratī ca mahādhanuḥ sarvasaundaryasāraṁ tadrūpaṁ lāvaṇyaśobhitam
and the objects that dispel hunger, thirst, and old age, all held in her hands, and a great bow besides; that form held within it the very essence of all beauty, resplendent with grace,
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.7.28.37)
koṭisūryapratīkāśaṁ karuṇārasasāgaram darśayitvā jagaddhātrī sānantanayanodbhavā
radiant as a million suns, an ocean of the very essence of compassion — showing forth this form, that Devi, the sustainer of the world, from her own countless eyes,
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.7.28.38)
mocayāmāsa lokeṣu vāridhārāṁ sahasraśaḥ navarātraṁ mahāvṛṣṭirabhūnnetrodbhavairjalaiḥ
released streams of water by the thousand into the worlds; for nine nights a great rain fell, born of the waters from her own eyes.
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.7.28.39)
duḥkhitānvīkṣya sakalānnetrāśrūṇi vimuñcatī tarpitāstena te lokā oṣadhyaḥ sakalā api
Beholding all those suffering creatures, shedding tears from her own eyes, all the worlds were thereby satisfied, and all the medicinal plants too.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.7.28.40)
nadīnadapravāhāstairjalaiḥ samabhavannṛpa nilīya saṁsthitāḥ pūrvaṁ surāste nirgatā bahiḥ
O king, from those waters the streams of rivers and torrents were born; the gods who had earlier lain hidden came forth once again.
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.7.28.41)
militvā sasurā viprā devīṁ samabhituṣṭuvuḥ namo vedāntavedye te namo brahmasvarūpiṇi
The brahmins, together with the gods, gathered and praised the Devi fully — Homage to you, known through the Vedanta! Homage to you, whose very form is the Absolute!
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.7.28.42)
svamāyayā sarvajagadvidhātryai te namo namaḥ bhaktakalpadrume devi bhaktārthaṁ dehadhāriṇi
You who, by your own divine power, ordain this entire universe, homage to you, again and again; O Devi, wish-fulfilling tree for your devotees, who assumes a body for their sake alone,
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.7.28.43)
nityatṛpte nirupame bhuvaneśvari te namaḥ asmacchāntyarthamatulaṁ locanānāṁ sahasrakam
ever content, unequaled, O Bhuvaneshvari, homage to you; for the sake of our own peace you have borne this incomparable multitude of a thousand eyes,
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.7.28.44)
tvayā yato dhṛtaṁ devi śatākṣī tvaṁ tato bhava kṣudhayā pīḍitā mātaḥ stotuṁ śaktirna cāsti naḥ
O Devi, and it is for this very reason that you have become Shatakshi (the hundred-eyed one). O mother, we are tormented by hunger — the very strength to praise you no longer remains in us.
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.7.28.45)
kṛpāṁ kuru maheśāni vedānapyāharāmbike vyāsa uvāca iti teṣāṁ vacaḥ śrutvā śākānsvakarasaṁsthitān
O great goddess, show us mercy; O mother, restore to us the Vedas as well. Vyasa said: Hearing their words, the auspicious Devi gave forth the vegetables held in her own hands,
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.7.28.46)
svādūni phalamūlāni bhakṣaṇārthaṁ dadau śivā nānāvidhāni cānnāni paśubhojyāni yāni ca
along with sweet fruits and roots, for them to eat — and various grains besides, those which even beasts may eat,
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.7.28.47)
kāmyānantarasairyuktānyānavīnodbhavaṁ dadau śākambharīti nāmāpi taddinātsamabhūnnṛpa
which were endowed with infinite savor and utterly delightful, all these too she brought forth anew and gave to them. O king, from that very day the Devi also acquired the name Shakambhari (bearer of herbs).
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.7.28.48)
tataḥ kolāhale jāte dūtavākyena bodhitaḥ sasainyaḥ sāyudho yoddhuṁ durgamākhyo'suro yayau
Thereafter, learning of this uproar from the word of a messenger, that demon named Durgama set out for battle, together with his army and his weapons.
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.7.28.49)
sahasrākṣauhiṇīyuktaḥ śarānmuñcaṁstvarānvitaḥ rurodha devasainyaṁ tadyaddevyagre sthitaṁ purā
Furnished with a thousand akshauhinis of troops, loosing arrows, with the greatest haste he arrived there where, before the Devi herself, the gods' own army once had stood, and he besieged it,
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.7.28.50)
tathā vipragaṇaṁ caiva rodhayāmāsa sarvataḥ tataḥ kilakilā śabdaḥ samabhūddevamaṇḍale
and in the same way he encircled the assembly of brahmins on every side. Then a great uproar arose within the ranks of the gods,
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.7.28.51)
trāhi trāhīti vākyāni procuḥ sarve dvijāmarāḥ tatastejomayaṁ cakraṁ devānāṁ paritaḥ śivā
'Save us, save us!' — all the gods and brahmins cried out together in this way. Then the auspicious Devi fashioned a discus of blazing light all around the gods,
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.7.28.52)
cakāra rakṣaṇārthāya svayaṁ tasmād bahiḥ sthitā tataḥ samabhavadyuddhaṁ devyā daityasya cobhayoḥ
for their protection, and she herself came forth and stood outside it. Thereupon a fierce battle broke out between the Devi and that daitya.
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.7.28.53)
śaravarṣasamācchannaṁ sūryamaṇḍalamadbhutam parasparaśarodgharṣasamudbhūtāgnisuprabham
Even the wondrous disc of the sun was veiled by the shower of arrows, and it grew bright with the fire born of the clashing of arrows against one another,
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.7.28.54)
kaṭhorajyāṭaṇatkārabadhirīkṛtadiktaṭam tato devīśarīrāttu nirgatāstīvraśaktayaḥ
and the horizons of every quarter were deafened by the harsh twang of bowstrings. Then, from the Devi's own body, the most intense shaktis came forth —
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.7.28.55)
kālikā tāriṇī bālā tripurā bhairavī ramā bagalā caiva mātaṅgī tathā tripurasundarī
Kalika, Tarini, Bala, Tripura, Bhairavi, Rama, Bagala, Matangi, and likewise Tripurasundari,
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.7.28.56)
kāmākṣī tulajā devī jambhinī mohinī tathā chinnamastā guhyakālī daśasāhasrabāhukā
Kamakshi, the goddess Tulaja, Jambhini, and Mohini, Chinnamasta, Guhyakali, she of ten thousand arms —
Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.7.28.57)
dvātriṁśacchaktayaścānyāścatuṣṣaṣṭimitāḥ parāḥ asaṅkhyātāstato devyaḥ samudbhūtāstu sāyudhāḥ
thirty-two other shaktis, and sixty-four more supreme powers besides; and from them countless further devis came forth, each armed with her own weapons,
Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.7.28.58)
mṛdaṅgaśaṅkhavīṇādināditaṁ saṅgarasthalam śaktibhirdaityasainye tu nāśite'kṣauhiṇīśate
and the field of battle resounded with the sound of drums, conches, and lutes; by those shaktis, hundreds of akshauhinis of the daitya's army were destroyed,
Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.7.28.59)
agresaraḥ samabhavaddurgamo vāhinīpatiḥ śaktibhiḥ saha yuddhaṁ ca cakāra prathamaṁ ripuḥ
and then that army's own commander, Durgama, himself advanced to the fore. First that enemy fought against those very shaktis,
Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.7.28.60)
mahadyuddhaṁ samabhavadyatrābhūdraktavāhinī akṣauhiṇyastu tāḥ sarvā vinaṣṭā daśabhirdinaiḥ
and that great battle was such that rivers of blood flowed there; all of his akshauhinis were utterly destroyed within ten days.
Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.7.28.61)
tata ekādaśe prāpte dine paramadāruṇe raktamālyāmbaradharo raktagandhānulepanaḥ
Then, on the eleventh day, that most terrible one, wearing blood-red garlands and garments, anointed with red sandal paste,
Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.7.28.62)
kṛtvotsavaṁ mahāntaṁ tu yuddhāya rathasaṁsthitaḥ saṁrambheṇaiva mahatā śaktīḥ sarvā vijitya ca
having held a great celebration, mounted his chariot and came forth for battle; with the greatest fury he vanquished all those shaktis,
Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.7.28.63)
mahādevīrathāgre tu svarathaṁ saṁnyaveśayat tato'bhavanmahadyuddhaṁ devyā daityasya cobhayoḥ
and drew up his own chariot directly before the great Devi's chariot. Thereupon a great battle took place between the Devi and that daitya,
Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.7.28.64)
praharadvayaparyantaṁ hṛdayatrāsakārakam tataḥ pañcadaśātyugrabāṇāndevī mumoca ha
which lasted two full watches and was terrifying to the very heart. Then the Devi loosed fifteen most fierce arrows —
Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.7.28.65)
caturbhiścaturo vāhānbāṇenaikena sārathim dvābhyāṁ netre bhujau dvābhyāṁ dhvajamekena patriṇā
with four she struck his four horses, with one arrow his charioteer, with two his two eyes, with two his two arms, with one feathered shaft his banner,
Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.7.28.66)
and with five arrows the Mother of the universe pierced through his heart. Then, vomiting blood, that lord of the city met his death.
Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.7.28.67)
tasya tejastu nirgatya devīrūpe viveśa ha hate tasminmahāvīrye śāntamāsījjagattrayam
His own splendor, departing from his body, merged into the very form of the Devi; with that mighty demon slain, all three worlds grew calm.
Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.7.28.68)
tato brahmādayaḥ sarve tuṣṭuvurjagadambikām puraskṛtya harīśānau bhaktyā gadgadayā girā
Then Brahma and all the gods, with Hari and Isha (Vishnu and Shiva) at their head, praised the Mother of the universe with devotion, their voices choked with feeling.
Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.7.28.69)
devā ūcuḥ jagadbhramavivartaikakāraṇe parameśvari namaḥ śākambhari śive namaste śatalocane
The gods said: O supreme goddess, O sole cause of this world's illusory whirl of becoming, homage to you, O Shakambhari, O auspicious one; homage to you, O hundred-eyed one.
Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.7.28.70)
sarvopaniṣadudghuṣṭe durgamāsuranāśini namo māyeśvari śive pañcakośāntarasthite
O you who are proclaimed throughout all the Upanishads, O destroyer of the demon Durgama, homage to you, O mistress of maya, O auspicious one, who dwell within the five sheaths.
Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.7.28.71)
cetasā nirvikalpena yāṁ dhyāyanti munīśvarāḥ praṇavārthasvarūpāṁ tāṁ bhajāmo bhuvaneśvarīm
We worship that Bhuvaneshvari, whose very form is the meaning of the syllable Om, upon whom the greatest of sages meditate with a mind free of all distinction.
Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.7.28.72)
anantakoṭibrahmāṇḍajananīṁ divyavigrahām brahmaviṣṇvādijananīṁ sarvabhāvairnatā vayam
Mother of countless millions of universes, bearer of a divine form, mother even of Brahma, Vishnu, and the rest — we have bowed to you with our whole being.
Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.7.28.73)
kaḥ kuryātpāmarāndṛṣṭvā rodanaṁ sakaleśvaraḥ sadayāṁ parameśānīṁ śatākṣīṁ mātaraṁ vinā
Who, indeed, is that lord of all who would not weep at the sight of these wretched creatures — save the compassionate supreme mother, Shatakshi herself?
Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.7.28.74)
vyāsa uvāca iti stutā surairdevī brahmaviṣṇvādibhirvaraiḥ pūjitā vividhairdravyaiḥ santuṣṭābhūcca tatkṣaṇe
Vyasa said: Thus praised by Brahma, Vishnu, and the other foremost gods, and worshipped with offerings of every kind, the Devi was gladdened in that very instant.
Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.7.28.75)
prasannā sā tadā devī vedānāhṛtya sā dadau brāhmaṇebhyo viśeṣeṇa provāca pikabhāṣiṇī
Then, being pleased, that Devi brought back the Vedas and gave them, especially to the brahmins; and that goddess, whose voice was as sweet as the cuckoo's, spoke thus —
Verse 76 (devibhagavatam.7.28.76)
mameyaṁ tanurutkṛṣṭā pālanīyā viśeṣataḥ yayā vinānartha eṣa jāto dṛṣṭo'dhunaiva hi
This most excellent form of mine deserves to be especially upheld and cherished; for without it, this very calamity, just now witnessed, came to pass.
Verse 77 (devibhagavatam.7.28.77)
pūjyāhaṁ sarvadā sevyā yuṣmābhiḥ sarvadaiva hi nātaḥ parataraṁ kiñcitkalyāṇāyopadiśyate
I am ever worthy of worship, ever worthy of service by all of you, always; nothing beyond this is taught as the true path to well-being.
Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.7.28.78)
paṭhanīyaṁ mamaitaddhi māhātmyaṁ sarvadottamam tena tuṣṭā bhaviṣyāmi hariṣyāmi tathāpadaḥ
This glory of mine should always be recited, as the very best of all recitations; being thereby pleased, I shall take away every calamity.
Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.7.28.79)
durgamāsurahantrītvāddurgeti mama nāma yaḥ gṛhṇāti ca śatākṣīti māyāṁ bhittvā vrajatyasau
Because of the slaying of the demon Durgama, my name also became 'Durga'; and whoever recites the name 'Shatakshi' passes beyond, piercing through maya.
Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.7.28.80)
kimuktenātra bahunā sāraṁ vakṣyāmi tattvataḥ saṁsevyāhaṁ sadā devāḥ sarvairapi surāsuraiḥ
What use is there in saying more on this matter? I shall tell the true essence of it — I am ever to be served by all, gods and demons alike.
Verse 81 (devibhagavatam.7.28.81)
ityuktvāntarhitā devī devānāṁ caiva paśyatām santoṣaṁ janayantyevaṁ saccidanandarūpiṇī
So saying, before the very eyes of the gods, that Devi vanished — that goddess, whose form is being, consciousness, and bliss, thus creating contentment, disappeared from sight.
Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.7.28.82)
etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ rahasyaṁ paramaṁ mahat gopanīyaṁ prayatnena sarvakalyāṇakārakam
This entire, most secret, and great mystery has now been told to you; it must be kept carefully guarded, for it brings about the well-being of all.
Verse 83 (devibhagavatam.7.28.83)
ya imaṁ śṛṇuyānnityamadhyāyaṁ bhaktitatparaḥ sarvānkāmānavāpnoti devīloke mahīyate
Whoever, filled with devotion, listens to this chapter always, attains all his desires, and is honored in the world of the Devi.
