Skandha 7 · Chapter 30
Description of the Devi's Seats (Pithas)
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.7.30.1)
vyāsa uvāca tataste tu vanoddeśe himācalataṭāśrayāḥ māyābījajapāsaktāstapaśceruḥ samāhitāḥ
Vyasa said: Then all of them, in that region of the forest, taking shelter at the foot of the Himalayas, absorbed in the recitation of the maya-bija mantra, performed austerities with focused mind.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.7.30.2)
dhyāyatāṁ paramāṁ śaktiṁ lakṣavarṣāṇyabhūnnṛpa tataḥ prasannā devī sā pratyakṣyaṁ darśanaṁ dadau
O king, meditating upon that Supreme Shakti, a hundred thousand years passed for them; then, being pleased, that Devi granted them her direct, visible presence.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.7.30.3)
pāśāṅkuśavarābhīticaturbāhustrilocanā karuṇārasasampūrṇā saccidānandarūpiṇī
Bearing in her four hands the noose, the goad, and the gestures of boon-giving and fearlessness, three-eyed, filled to overflowing with the very essence of compassion, her form being being-consciousness-bliss itself —
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.7.30.4)
dṛṣṭvā tāṁ sarvajananīṁ tuṣṭuvurmunayo'malāḥ namaste viśvarūpāyai vaiśvānarasumūrtaye
beholding her, the mother of all, those pure-hearted sages began to praise her — Homage to you, whose form is the universe itself! Homage to you, whose beautiful form is the cosmic fire!
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.7.30.5)
namastejasarūpāyai sūtrātmavapuṣe namaḥ yasminsarve liṅgadehā otaprotā vyavasthitāḥ
Homage to you, whose form is pure radiance! Homage to you, whose body is the thread-soul of all — in whom all subtle bodies are woven together, warp and weft.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.7.30.6)
namaḥ prājñasvarūpāyai namo'vyākṛtamūrtaye namaḥ pratyaksvarūpāyai namaste brahmamūrtaye
Homage to you, whose form is pure discernment! Homage to you, whose form is the unmanifest! Homage to you, whose form is the inward Self! Homage to you, whose form is Brahman itself!
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.7.30.7)
namaste sarvarūpāyai sarvalakṣyātmamūrtaye iti stutvā jagaddhātrīṁ bhaktigadgadayā girā
Homage to you, whose form is all things! Homage to you, whose very self is the goal of every seeking! Thus praising her, the sustainer of the universe,
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.7.30.8)
praṇemuścaraṇāmbhojaṁ dakṣādyā munayo'malāḥ tataḥ prasannā sā devī provāca pikabhāṣiṇī
in a voice choked with devotion, Daksha and the other pure sages bowed to her lotus feet. Then, being pleased, that Devi, whose voice was as sweet as the cuckoo's, said —
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.7.30.9)
varaṁ brūta mahābhāgā varadāhaṁ sadā matā tasyāstu vacanaṁ śrutvā haraviṣṇvostanoḥ śamam
O fortunate ones, ask for a boon — I am ever known as the granter of boons. Hearing her words, they asked for the restoration of the bodies of Hara (Shiva) and Vishnu,
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.7.30.10)
tayostacchaktilābhaṁ ca vavrire nṛpasattama dakṣo'tha punarapyāha janma devi kule mama
and the regaining by each of them of his own shakti — O best of kings, this alone they asked for. Then Daksha spoke again: O Devi, may you be born in my own lineage,
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.7.30.11)
bhavettavāmba yenāhaṁ kṛtakṛtyo bhave iti japaṁ dhyānaṁ tathā pūjāṁ sthānāni vividhāni ca
O mother, so that I might attain all that need be attained — thus he spoke. The recitation, meditation, worship, and the various places sacred to you,
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.7.30.12)
vada me parameśāni svamukhenaiva kevalam devyuvāca macchaktyoravamānācca jātāvasthā tayordvayoḥ
O supreme goddess, tell me of these, from your own mouth alone. The Devi said: It was indeed through the insult offered to my own shaktis that this state befell those two.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.7.30.13)
naitādṛśaḥ prakartavyo me'parādhaḥ kadācana adhunā matkṛpāleśāccharīre svasthatā tayoḥ
Such an offense must never again be committed; now, through even a fraction of my grace, the bodies of those two shall be restored to health,
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.7.30.14)
bhaviṣyati ca te śaktī tvadgṛhe kṣīrasāgare janiṣyatastatra tābhyāṁ prāpsyataḥ prerite mayā
and both of their shaktis too, born in your own house and in the Ocean of Milk, impelled by me alone, shall be obtained by those two once more.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.7.30.15)
māyābījaṁ hi mantro me mukhyaḥ priyakaraḥ sadā dhyānaṁ virāṭsvarūpaṁ me'thavā tvatpurataḥ sthitam
The maya-bija mantra is my chief and ever-beloved mantra; my meditation should be either upon my cosmic form, or upon this very form now manifest before you,
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.7.30.16)
saccidānandarūpaṁ vā sthānaṁ sarvaṁ jaganmama yuṣmābhiḥ sarvadā cāhaṁ pūjyā dhyeyā ca sarvadā
or else upon my being-consciousness-bliss form — this entire universe is itself my abode; by all of you I am ever to be worshipped, and ever to be meditated upon.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.7.30.17)
vyāsa uvāca ityuktvāntardadhe devī maṇidvīpādhivāsinī dakṣādyā munayaḥ sarve brahmāṇaṁ punarāyayuḥ
Vyasa said: So saying, that Devi, dweller in the Jewel Isle, vanished from sight; Daksha and all the other sages returned once more to Brahma.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.7.30.18)
brahmaṇe sarvavṛtāntaṁ kathayāmāsurādarāt haro hariśca svasthau tau svasvakāryakṣamau nṛpa
With reverence they told Brahma the entire account. O king, Hara (Shiva) and Hari, both restored to health, became capable once more of their own respective tasks,
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.7.30.19)
jātau parāmbākṛpayā garveṇa rahitau tadā kadācitadatha kāle tu mahaḥ śāktamavātarat
having attained this by the grace of the Supreme Mother, and now, at last, free of all pride. Once, in due time, that shakti-splendor descended upon the earth,
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.7.30.20)
dakṣadehe mahārāja trailokye'pyutsavo'bhavat devāḥ pramuditāḥ sarve puṣpavṛṣṭiṁ ca cakrire
O great king, in Daksha's house, and throughout all three worlds as well, a great celebration took place. All the gods, filled with joy, showered down flowers.
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.7.30.21)
nedurdundubhayaḥ svarge karakoṇāhatā nṛpa manāṁsyāsanprasannāni sādhūnāmamalātmanām
O king, in heaven the great drums resounded, struck by their mallets; the minds of the pure-souled saints were filled with delight.
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.7.30.22)
sarito mārgavāhinyaḥ suprabho'bhūddivākaraḥ maṅgalāyāṁ tu jātāyāṁ jātaṁ sarvatra maṅgalam
The rivers flowed gently within their courses, the sun grew radiant with a new splendor; with the birth of that most auspicious one, auspiciousness alone arose everywhere.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.7.30.23)
tasyā nāma satīṁ cakre satyatvātparasaṁvidaḥ dadau punaḥ śivāyātha tasya śaktistu yābhavat
Because she was the very truth-form of the Supreme Consciousness, her name was given as 'Sati'; and she was given again to Shiva, to be, once more, his very own shakti.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.7.30.24)
sā punarjvalane dagdhā daivayogānmanornṛpa janamejaya uvāca anarthakarametatte śrāvitaṁ vacanaṁ mune
O king, she was again consumed in fire, through the very working of fate, at the sacrifice of Manu. Janamejaya said: O sage, this word you have told me seems most inauspicious.
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.7.30.25)
etādṛśaṁ mahadvastu kathaṁ dagdhaṁ hutāśane yannāmasmaraṇānnṛṇāṁ saṁsārāgnibhayaṁ na hi
How could so great a being be consumed by a blazing fire — she whose very name, merely remembered, frees men from all fear even of the fire of worldly existence?
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.7.30.26)
kena karmavipākena manordagdhaṁ tadeva hi vyāsa uvāca śṛṇu rājan purā vṛttaṁ satīdāyasya kāraṇam
By what ripening of what deed did she come to be burned? Vyasa said: Listen, O king, I shall now tell the earlier cause behind this gift, the birth of Sati.
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.7.30.27)
kadācidatha durvāsā gato jāmbūnadeśvarīm dadarśa devīṁ tatrāsau māyābījaṁ jajāpa saḥ
Once the sage Durvasa went to the mistress of the city of Jambunada (the Devi); there he beheld the Devi and recited the maya-bija mantra.
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.7.30.28)
tataḥ prasannā deveśī nijakaṇṭhagatāṁ srajam bhramadbhramarasaṁsaktāṁ makarandamadākulām
Then, being pleased, the goddess of gods took the garland resting upon her own neck, clung about by hovering bees, drenched with the intoxication of honey,
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.7.30.29)
dadau prasādabhūtāṁ tāṁ jagrāha śirasā muniḥ tato nirgatya tarasā vyomamārgeṇa tāpasaḥ
and gave it to him as her own grace, and the sage took it and placed it upon his own head. Thereupon, going forth swiftly by the path of the sky, that ascetic
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.7.30.30)
ājagāma sa yatrāste dakṣaḥ sākṣātsatīpitā sandarśanārthamambāyā nanāma ca satīpade
arrived at the place where Daksha, Sati's own father, dwelt; wishing to behold the Mother, he bowed low at Sati's own feet.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.7.30.31)
pṛṣṭo dakṣeṇa sa munirmālā kasyāstyalaukikī kathaṁ labdhā tvayā nātha durlabhā bhuvi mānavaiḥ
Daksha asked that sage: Whose is this otherworldly garland, and how, O lord, did you obtain it — something so hard for mortals on this earth to attain?
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.7.30.32)
tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya provācāśruyutekṣaṇaḥ devyāḥ prasādamatulaṁ premagadgaditāntaraḥ
Hearing his words, that sage, his eyes filled with tears, his very heart choked with love, told of that Devi's incomparable grace.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.7.30.33)
prārthayāmāsa tāṁ mālāṁ taṁ muniṁ sa satīpitā adeyaṁ śaktibhaktāya nāsti trailokyamaṇḍale
Sati's father, Daksha, asked that sage for the garland — thinking that to a devotee of Shakti there is nothing at all that is beyond giving, nothing in all the circle of the three worlds,
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.7.30.34)
iti buddhyā tu tāṁ mālāṁ manave sa samarpayat gṛhītā śirasā mālā manunā nijamandire
with this thought he gave that garland to Manu instead. Manu, taking that garland with reverence upon his own head, in his own palace,
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.7.30.35)
sthāpitā śayanaṁ yatra dampatyoratisundaram paśukarmarato rātrau mālāgandhena moditaḥ
placed it upon that most beautiful bed where the royal couple lay together. At night, given over to carnal union, and gladdened by the fragrance of that garland,
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.7.30.36)
abhavatsa mahīpālastena pāpena śaṅkare śive dveṣamatirjāto devyāṁ satyāṁ tathā nṛpa
that king, through the effect of that sin, was filled with a spirit of hatred toward Shankara, and, O king, in the same way toward the Devi Sati as well.
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.7.30.37)
rājaṁstenāparādhena tajjanyo deha eva ca satyā yogāgninā dagdhaḥ satīdharmadidṛkṣayā
O king, on account of that offense, and wishing to preserve her own dharma as Sati, she consumed, by her own yogic fire, that very body which had arisen from that transgression.
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.7.30.38)
punaśca himavatpṛṣṭhe prādurāsīttu tanmahaḥ janamejaya uvāca dahyamāne satīdehe jāte kimakarocchivaḥ
That splendor manifested again upon the slopes of the Himalayas. Janamejaya said: When Sati's body was burning, what did Shiva do?
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.7.30.39)
prāṇādhikā satī tasya tadviyogena kātaraḥ vyāsa uvāca tataḥ paraṁ tu yajjātāṁ mayā vaktuṁ na śakyate
Sati was dearer to him than his very life, and, parted from her, he grew utterly distraught. Vyasa said: What followed after that is difficult even for me to describe.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.7.30.40)
trailokyapralayo jātaḥ śivakopāgninā nṛpa vīrabhadraḥ samutpanno bhadrakālīgaṇānvitaḥ
O king, through the very fire of Shiva's wrath, all three worlds seemed on the verge of dissolution; Virabhadra arose, accompanied by the army of Bhadrakali.
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.7.30.41)
trailokyanāśanodyukto vīrabhadro yadābhavat brahmādayastadā devāḥ śaṅkaraṁ śaraṇaṁ yayuḥ
When Virabhadra had resolved upon the destruction of all three worlds, Brahma and the other gods took refuge in Shankara himself.
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.7.30.42)
jāte sarvasvanāśe'pi karuṇānidhirīśvaraḥ abhayaṁ dattavāṁstebhyo bastavaktreṇa taṁ manum
Even as all things seemed about to be destroyed, that ocean of compassion, the Lord, having fastened upon Manu the head of a goat, and granting fearlessness to the gods,
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.7.30.43)
ajīvayanmahātmāsau tataḥ khinno maheśvaraḥ yajñavāṭamupāgamya ruroda bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ
brought that great Manu back to life. Thereafter, that most sorrowful great Lord, arriving at the sacrificial enclosure, began to lament, deeply grieved,
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.7.30.44)
apaśyattāṁ satīṁ vahnau dahyamānāṁ tu citkalām skandhe'pyāropayāmāsa hā satīti vadanmuhuḥ
and he beheld that very fragment of pure consciousness, Sati, burning in the fire; crying, 'Alas, Sati!' again and again, he lifted her body upon his own shoulder.
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.7.30.45)
babhrāma bhrāntacittaḥ sannānādeśeṣu śaṅkaraḥ tadā brahmādayo devāścintāmāpuranuttamām
His mind utterly distracted, Shankara wandered through many lands; then Brahma and the other gods fell into the deepest anxiety.
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.7.30.46)
viṣṇustu tvarayā tatra dhanurudyamya mārgaṇaiḥ cicchedāvayavānsatyāstattatsthāneṣu te'patan
Then Vishnu, taking up his bow with haste, cut through Sati's limbs with his own arrows, and they fell in each of those various places.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.7.30.47)
tattatsthāneṣu tatrāsīnnānāmūrtidharo haraḥ uvāca ca tato devānsthāneṣveteṣu ye śivām
In each of those places, Hara (Shiva) took his abode in various forms, and he said to the gods: In these places, whoever worships the auspicious Devi
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.7.30.48)
bhajanti parayā bhaktyā teṣāṁ kiñcinna durlabham nityaṁ sannihitā yatra nijāṅgeṣu parāmbikā
with the highest devotion — for them nothing at all remains difficult to attain; wherever the Supreme Mother is ever present in her own limbs,
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.7.30.49)
sthāneṣveteṣu ye martyāḥ puraścaraṇakarmiṇaḥ teṣāṁ mantrāḥ prasiddhyanti māyābījaṁ viśeṣataḥ
in those places, whatever mortals perform the rite of purashcharana find their mantras attain success — especially the maya-bija mantra above all others.
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.7.30.50)
ityuktvā śaṅkarasteṣu sthāneṣu virahāturaḥ kālaṁ ninye nṛpaśreṣṭha japadhyānasamādhibhiḥ
So saying, Shankara, tormented by separation, O best of kings, began to pass his time in those places in recitation, meditation, and deep absorption.
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.7.30.51)
janamejaya uvāca kāni sthānāni tāni syuḥ siddhapīṭhāni cānagha kati saṅkhyāni nāmāni kāni teṣāṁ ca me vada
Janamejaya said: O sinless one, what are those places, the siddha-pithas? How many are they in number, and what are their names — tell me this.
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.7.30.52)
tatra sthitānāṁ devīnāṁ nāmāni ca kṛpākara kṛtārtho'haṁ bhave yena tadvadāśu mahāmune
O treasury of compassion, tell me also the names of the goddesses dwelling in each of them, so that I might become fulfilled — O great sage, tell me this at once.
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.7.30.53)
vyāsa uvāca śṛṇu rājanpravakṣyāmi devepīṭhāni sāmptatam yeṣāṁ śravaṇamātreṇa pāpahīno bhavennaraḥ
Vyasa said: Listen, O king, I shall now describe the Devi's pithas — merely by hearing of which a man becomes free of all sin.
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.7.30.54)
yeṣu yeṣu ca pīṭheṣūpāsyeyaṁ siddhikāṅkṣibhiḥ bhūtikāmairabhidhyeyā tāni vakṣyāmi tattvataḥ
In whichever pitha those seeking spiritual attainment should worship this Devi, and upon whom those seeking prosperity should meditate — these I shall tell truly.
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.7.30.55)
vārāṇasyāṁ viśālākṣī gaurīmukhanivāsinī kṣetre vai naimiṣāraṇye proktā sā liṅgadhāriṇī
In Varanasi she is Vishalakshi, dwelling within the face of Gauri; in the region of Naimisharanya she is spoken of as bearing the linga.
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.7.30.56)
prayāge lalitā proktā kāmukī gandhamādane mānase kumudā proktā dakṣiṇe cottare tathā
In Prayaga she is called Lalita, in Gandhamadana, Kamuki; at Lake Manasa, in both its southern and northern reaches, she is called Kumuda,
Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.7.30.57)
viśvakāmā bhagavatī viśvakāmaprapūraṇī gomante gomatī devī mandare kāmacāriṇī
