Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.8.6.1)

श्रीनारायण उवाच । अरुणोदा नदी या तु मया प्रोक्ता च नारद । मन्दरान्निपतन्ती सा पूर्वेणेलावृतं प्लवेत्

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | aruṇodā nadī yā tu mayā proktā ca nārada | mandarānnipatantī sā pūrveṇelāvṛtaṁ plavet

Shri Narayana said: That river Arunoda, which I have described, O Narada, falling from Mandara, flows to the east of Ilavrita.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.8.6.2)

यज्जोषणाद्भवान्याश्चानुचरीणां स्त्रियामपि । यक्षगन्धर्वपत्नीनां देहगन्धवहोऽनिलः

yajjoṣaṇādbhavānyāścānucarīṇāṁ striyāmapi | yakṣagandharvapatnīnāṁ dehagandhavaho'nilaḥ

By contact with which, the wind that carries the fragrance of the bodies of Bhavani's attendant women, and of the wives of the yakshas and gandharvas,

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.8.6.3)

वासयत्यभितो भूमिं दशयोजनसङ्ख्यया । एवं जम्बूफलानां च तुङ्गदेशनिपातनात्

vāsayatyabhito bhūmiṁ daśayojanasaṅkhyayā | evaṁ jambūphalānāṁ ca tuṅgadeśanipātanāt

perfumes the land all around to a distance of ten yojanas. Likewise, from the falling, in a high place, of the Jambu fruits,

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.8.6.4)

विशीर्यतामनस्थीनां कुञ्जराङ्गप्रमाणिनाम् । रसेन च नदी जम्बूनाम्नी मेर्वाख्यमन्दरात्

viśīryatāmanasthīnāṁ kuñjarāṅgapramāṇinām | rasena ca nadī jambūnāmnī mervākhyamandarāt

which shatter, stoneless, the size of an elephant's body, from their juice the river named Jambu, born of Meru also called Mandara,

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.8.6.5)

पतन्ती भूमिभागे च दक्षिणेलावृतं गता । देवी जम्बूफलास्वादतुष्टा जम्ब्वादिनी स्मृता

patantī bhūmibhāge ca dakṣiṇelāvṛtaṁ gatā | devī jambūphalāsvādatuṣṭā jambvādinī smṛtā

falling upon the surface of the earth, flows to the south of Ilavrita; that goddess, gratified by the taste of the Jambu fruits, is remembered by the name Jambvadini.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.8.6.6)

तत्रत्यानां च लोकानां देवनागर्षिरक्षसाम् । पूजनीयपदा मान्या सर्वभूतदयाकरी

tatratyānāṁ ca lokānāṁ devanāgarṣirakṣasām | pūjanīyapadā mānyā sarvabhūtadayākarī

Her feet worthy of worship to the peoples there — gods, nagas, sages, and rakshasas — honoured, a source of compassion for all beings,

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.8.6.7)

पावनी पापिनां रोगनाशिनी स्मरतामपि । कीर्तिता विघ्नसंहर्त्री माननीया दिवौकसाम्

pāvanī pāpināṁ roganāśinī smaratāmapi | kīrtitā vighnasaṁhartrī mānanīyā divaukasām

purifier of sinners, destroyer of disease even for those who merely remember her, celebrated as remover of obstacles, honoured by the dwellers of heaven.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.8.6.8)

कोकिलाक्षी कामकला करुणा कामपूजिता । कठोरविग्रहा धन्या नाकिमान्या गभस्तिनी

kokilākṣī kāmakalā karuṇā kāmapūjitā | kaṭhoravigrahā dhanyā nākimānyā gabhastinī

Cuckoo-eyed, of amorous grace, compassionate, worshipped by desire, of firm form, blessed, honoured by the dwellers of heaven, radiant —

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.8.6.9)

एभिर्नामपदैः कामं जपनीया सदा नृणाम् । जम्बूनदीरोधसोर्या मृत्तिकातीरवर्तिनी

ebhirnāmapadaiḥ kāmaṁ japanīyā sadā nṛṇām | jambūnadīrodhasoryā mṛttikātīravartinī

by these names is she ever to be recited with devotion by men — she who dwells along the clay-banks and shores of the Jambu river,

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.8.6.10)

जम्बूरसेनानुविद्ध्यमाना वाय्वर्कयोगतः । विद्याधरामरस्त्रीणां भूषणं विविधं महत्

jambūrasenānuviddhyamānā vāyvarkayogataḥ | vidyādharāmarastrīṇāṁ bhūṣaṇaṁ vividhaṁ mahat

and, pervaded by the essence of the Jambu through the union of wind and sun, becomes the manifold, great ornament of the Vidyadhara and divine women.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.8.6.11)

जाम्बूनदं सुवर्णं च प्रोक्तं देवविनिर्मितम् । यत्सुवर्णं च विबुधा योषिद्भिः कामुकाः सदा

jāmbūnadaṁ suvarṇaṁ ca proktaṁ devavinirmitam | yatsuvarṇaṁ ca vibudhā yoṣidbhiḥ kāmukāḥ sadā

It is declared to be the gold called Jambunada, fashioned by the gods; and that gold the wise, ever desiring it for their women,

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.8.6.12)

मुकुटं कटिसूत्रं च केयूरादीन्प्रकुर्वते । महाकदम्बः सम्प्रोक्तः सुपार्श्वगिरिसंस्थितः

mukuṭaṁ kaṭisūtraṁ ca keyūrādīnprakurvate | mahākadambaḥ samproktaḥ supārśvagirisaṁsthitaḥ

fashion into crowns, girdles, armlets and the like. There is spoken of a great Kadamba tree, standing on Mount Suparshva;

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.8.6.13)

तस्य कोटरदेशेभ्यः पञ्च धाराश्च याः स्मृताः । सुपार्श्वगिरिमूर्ध्नीह पतन्त्येता भुवं गताः

tasya koṭaradeśebhyaḥ pañca dhārāśca yāḥ smṛtāḥ | supārśvagirimūrdhnīha patantyetā bhuvaṁ gatāḥ

from the hollows of its trunk are remembered five streams, which, falling from the summit of Mount Suparshva, here reach the earth.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.8.6.14)

मधुधाराः पञ्च तास्तु पश्चिमेलावृतं प्लुताः । याश्चोपभुज्यमानानां देवानां मुखगन्धभृत्

madhudhārāḥ pañca tāstu paścimelāvṛtaṁ plutāḥ | yāścopabhujyamānānāṁ devānāṁ mukhagandhabhṛt

Those five streams of honey spread to the west of Ilavrita; and, carrying the fragrance from the mouths of the gods who partake of them,

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.8.6.15)

वायुः समन्ततोऽगच्छञ्छतयोजनवासनः । धारेश्वरी महादेवी भक्तानां कार्यकारिणी

vāyuḥ samantato'gacchañchatayojanavāsanaḥ | dhāreśvarī mahādevī bhaktānāṁ kāryakāriṇī

the wind spreads that scent for a hundred yojanas all around. There dwells the great goddess Dhareshvari, accomplisher of her devotees' tasks,

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.8.6.16)

देवपूज्या महोत्साहा कालरूपा महानना । वसते कर्मफलदा कान्तारग्रहणेश्वरी

devapūjyā mahotsāhā kālarūpā mahānanā | vasate karmaphaladā kāntāragrahaṇeśvarī

worshipped by the gods, of great zeal, of the very form of Time, of vast countenance, giver of the fruit of deeds, mistress of passage through difficult paths,

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.8.6.17)

करालदेहा कालाङ्गी कामकोटिप्रवर्तिनी । इत्येतैर्नामभिः पूज्या देवी सर्वसुरेश्वरी

karāladehā kālāṅgī kāmakoṭipravartinī | ityetairnāmabhiḥ pūjyā devī sarvasureśvarī

of terrible form, dark-limbed, fulfiller of countless desires — by these names is that goddess worshipped, the mistress of all the gods.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.8.6.18)

एवं कुमुदरूढो यो नाम्ना शतबलो वटः । तत्स्कन्धेभ्योऽधोमुखाश्च नदाः कुमुदमूर्धतः

evaṁ kumudarūḍho yo nāmnā śatabalo vaṭaḥ | tatskandhebhyo'dhomukhāśca nadāḥ kumudamūrdhataḥ

Likewise, upon Mount Kumuda stands a banyan tree named Shatabala; from its branches, facing downward, streams flow from the summit of Kumuda,

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.8.6.19)

पयोदधिमधुघृतगुडान्नाद्यम्बरादिभिः । शय्यासनाद्याभरणैः सर्वे कामदुघाश्च ते

payodadhimadhughṛtaguḍānnādyambarādibhiḥ | śayyāsanādyābharaṇaiḥ sarve kāmadughāśca te

of milk, curd, honey, ghee, molasses, food, garments and the rest, and of beds, seats, and ornaments — all of them fulfilling every desire,

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.8.6.20)

उत्तरेणेलावृतं ते प्लावयन्ति समन्ततः । मीनाक्षी तत्तले देवी देवासुरनिषेविता

uttareṇelāvṛtaṁ te plāvayanti samantataḥ | mīnākṣī tattale devī devāsuraniṣevitā

flooding all around to the north of Ilavrita. There, at its foot, the goddess Minakshi dwells, served by gods and demons,

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.8.6.21)

नीलाम्बरा रौद्रमुखी नीलालकयुता च सा । नाकिनां देवसङ्घानां फलदा वरदा च सा

nīlāmbarā raudramukhī nīlālakayutā ca sā | nākināṁ devasaṅghānāṁ phaladā varadā ca sā

clad in dark garments, of a fierce countenance, adorned with dark locks — she who grants fruit and boons to the hosts of the gods of heaven.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.8.6.22)

अतिमान्यातिपूज्या च मत्तमातङ्गगामिनी । मदनोन्मादिनी मानप्रिया मानप्रियान्तरा

atimānyātipūjyā ca mattamātaṅgagāminī | madanonmādinī mānapriyā mānapriyāntarā

Most honoured, most worshipped, of gait like an intoxicated elephant, maddening with passion, fond of honour, dear within honour itself,

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.8.6.23)

मारवेगधरा मारपूजिता मारमादिनी । मयूरवरशोभाढ्या शिखिवाहनगर्भभूः

māravegadharā mārapūjitā māramādinī | mayūravaraśobhāḍhyā śikhivāhanagarbhabhūḥ

bearer of the force of desire, worshipped by Kama, intoxicating Kama himself, richly adorned with the beauty of the finest peacock, the very womb of the peacock-mounted one.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.8.6.24)

एभिर्नामपदैर्वन्द्या देवी सा मीनलोचना । जपतां स्मरतां मानदात्री चेश्वरसङ्गिनी

ebhirnāmapadairvandyā devī sā mīnalocanā | japatāṁ smaratāṁ mānadātrī ceśvarasaṅginī

By these names is that fish-eyed goddess to be adored — giver of honour to those who recite and remember her, and the companion of the Lord.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.8.6.25)

तेषां नदानां पानीयपानानुगतचेतसाम् । प्रजानां न कदाचित्स्याद्वलीपलितलक्षणम्

teṣāṁ nadānāṁ pānīyapānānugatacetasām | prajānāṁ na kadācitsyādvalīpalitalakṣaṇam

For the beings whose minds turn to the drinking of the waters of those streams, the marks of wrinkles and grey hair never appear,

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.8.6.26)

क्लमस्वेदादिदौर्गन्ध्यं जरामयमृतिभ्रमाः । शीतोष्णवातवैवर्ण्यमुखोपप्लवसञ्चयाः

klamasvedādidaurgandhyaṁ jarāmayamṛtibhramāḥ | śītoṣṇavātavaivarṇyamukhopaplavasañcayāḥ

nor the foulness of fatigue and sweat and the like, nor old age, disease, death, or confusion, nor discolouration from cold, heat, and wind, nor the crowding of afflictions upon the face —

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.8.6.27)

नापदश्चैव जायन्ते यावज्जीवं सुखं भवेत् । नैरन्तर्येण तत्स्याद्वै सुखं निरतिशायकम्

nāpadaścaiva jāyante yāvajjīvaṁ sukhaṁ bhavet | nairantaryeṇa tatsyādvai sukhaṁ niratiśāyakam

and misfortunes never arise; happiness alone prevails throughout life — a happiness unbroken and unsurpassed.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.8.6.28)

तत ऊर्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि सन्निवेशं च तद्गिरेः । सुवर्णमयनाम्नो वै सुमेरोः पर्वताः पृथक्

tata ūrdhvaṁ pravakṣyāmi sanniveśaṁ ca tadgireḥ | suvarṇamayanāmno vai sumeroḥ parvatāḥ pṛthak

Beyond this I shall now describe the situation of that mountain named the golden one, Sumeru, and its several surrounding mountains.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.8.6.29)

गिरयो विंशतिपराः कर्णिकाया इवेह ते । केसरीभूय सर्वेऽपि मेरोर्मूलविभागके

girayo viṁśatiparāḥ karṇikāyā iveha te | kesarībhūya sarve'pi merormūlavibhāgake

There are twenty further mountains here, as though the filaments of its pericarp, all becoming, as it were, the filaments at the base of Meru,

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.8.6.30)

परितश्चोपक्लृप्तास्ते तेषां नामानि शृण्वतः । कुरङ्गः कुरगश्चैव कुसुम्भोऽथो विकङ्कतः

paritaścopaklṛptāste teṣāṁ nāmāni śṛṇvataḥ | kuraṅgaḥ kuragaścaiva kusumbho'tho vikaṅkataḥ

arranged all around it. Hear their names: Kuranga, and Kuraga, and Kusumbha, then Vikankata,

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.8.6.31)

त्रिकूटः शिशिरश्चैव पतङ्गो रुचकस्तथा । निषधश्च शिनीवासः कपिलः शङ्ख एव च

trikūṭaḥ śiśiraścaiva pataṅgo rucakastathā | niṣadhaśca śinīvāsaḥ kapilaḥ śaṅkha eva ca

Trikuta, and Shishira, Patanga, and likewise Rucaka, and Nishadha, Shinivasa, Kapila, and Shankha too,

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.8.6.32)

वैदूर्यश्चारुधिश्चैव हंसो ऋषभ एव च । नागः कालञ्जरश्चैव नारदश्चेति विंशतिः

vaidūryaścārudhiścaiva haṁso ṛṣabha eva ca | nāgaḥ kālañjaraścaiva nāradaśceti viṁśatiḥ

Vaidurya, and Charudhi, Hamsa, and Rishabha too, Naga, and Kalanjara, and Narada — twenty in all.
