The Character of Prakriti
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.9.1.1)
śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | gaṇeśajananī durgā rādhā lakṣmīḥ sarasvatī | sāvitrī ca sṛṣṭividhau prakṛtiḥ pañcadhā smṛtā
Sri Narayana said: Durga, mother of Ganesha, Radha, Lakshmi, Sarasvati, and Savitri — in the work of creation, Prakriti is remembered as fivefold.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.1.2)
nārada uvāca | āvirbabhūva sā kena kā vā sā jñānināṁvara | kiṁ vā tallakṣaṇaṁ sādho babhūva pañcadhā katham
Narada said: O best of the wise, by whom did she come into being, and who is she? O sage, what is her nature, and how did she become fivefold?
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.1.3)
sarvāsāṁ caritaṁ pūjāvidhānaṁ guṇa īpsitaḥ | avatāraḥ kutra kasyāstanme vyākhyātumarhasi
Please explain to me the deeds of each of them, the manner of their worship, the qualities they bestow, and where each one took incarnation.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.1.4)
śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | prakṛterlakṣaṇaṁ vatsa ko vā vaktuṁ kṣamo bhavet | kiñcittathāpi vakṣyāmi yacchrutaṁ dharmavaktrataḥ
Sri Narayana said: My child, who indeed is capable of describing the true nature of Prakriti? Yet I shall tell you something of what I heard from the teacher of dharma's own mouth.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.1.5)
prakṛṣṭavācakaḥ praśna kṛtiśca sṛṣṭivācakaḥ | sṛṣṭau prakṛṣṭā yā devī prakṛtiḥ sā prakīrtitā
The syllable "pra" denotes excellence, and "kṛti" denotes creation; the goddess who is most excellent in creation is thus proclaimed as Prakriti.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.1.6)
guṇe sattve prakṛṣṭe ca praśabdo vartate śrutaḥ | madhyame rajasi kṛśca tiśabdastamasi smṛtaḥ
Among the guṇas, sattva is most excellent, hence the syllable "pra" is heard to apply there; "kṛ" is said for the middling rajas, and "ti" is remembered for tamas.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.1.7)
triguṇātmasvarūpā yā sā ca śaktisamanvitā | pradhānā sṛṣṭikaraṇe prakṛtistena kathyate
She who is of the nature of the three guṇas, endowed with power, and foremost in the act of creation — for this she is called Prakriti.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.1.8)
prathame vartate praśna kṛtiśca sṛṣṭivācakaḥ | sṛṣṭerādau ca yā devī prakṛtiḥ sā prakīrtitā
The first syllable denotes excellence, and "kṛti" denotes creation; the goddess who existed at the very beginning of creation is proclaimed as Prakriti.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.1.9)

yogenātmā sṛṣṭividhau dvidhārūpo babhūva saḥ | pumāṁśca dakṣiṇārdhāṅgo vāmārdhā prakṛtiḥ smṛtā
At the time of creation, through yoga, that one Self became twofold — the right half became the Male, and the left half is remembered as Prakriti.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.1.10)
sā ca brahmasvarūpā ca nityā sā ca sanātanī | yathā''tmā ca tathā śaktiryathāgnau dāhikā sthitā
She too is of the nature of Brahman, eternal and everlasting; as is the Self, so is the Power — just as the burning quality abides inseparably in fire.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.1.11)
ata eva hi yogīndraiḥ strīpumbhedo na manyate | sarvaṁ brahmamayaṁ brahmañchaśvatsadapi nārada
For this very reason the great yogis do not admit any distinction between male and female; O Narada, though ever existent, all this is nothing but the fullness of Brahman.
