Skandha 9 · Chapter 15
Narayana-Narada Dialogue: Shakti's Manifestation
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.9.15.1)
nārada uvāca | nārāyaṇapriyā sādhvī kathaṁ sā ca babhūva ha | tulasī kutra sambhūtā kā vā sā pūrvajanmani
Narada said: How did that virtuous woman become the beloved of Narayana? Where was Tulasi born, and who was she in her former birth?
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.15.2)
kasya vā sā kule jātā kasya kanyā kule satī | kena vā tapasā sā ca samprāptā prakṛteḥ param
In whose lineage was she born, whose daughter was that virtuous one? And by what austerity did she attain a state beyond Prakriti?
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.15.3)
nirvikāraṁ nirīhaṁ ca sarvaviśvasvarūpakam | nārāyaṇaṁ paraṁ brahma parameśvaramīśvaram
— Narayana, changeless, desireless, the very form of the whole universe, the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme Lord, the Lord —
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.15.4)
sarvārādhyaṁ ca sarveśaṁ sarvajñaṁ sarvakāraṇam | sarvādhāraṁ sarvarūpaṁ sarveṣāṁ paripālakam
— worshipped by all, the master of all, all-knowing, the cause of all, the support of all, the form of all, the sustainer of all —
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.15.5)
kathametādṛśī devī vṛkṣatvaṁ samavāpa ha | kathaṁ sāpyasuragrastā sambabhūva tapasvinī
— how did such a goddess come to attain the state of a plant? And how did she, a woman of austerity, come to be seized by an asura?
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.15.6)
susnigdhaṁ me mano lolaṁ prerayanmāṁ muhurmuhuḥ | chettumarhasi sandehaṁ sarvaṁ sandehabhañjana
My affectionate, restless mind urges me on again and again; O Dispeller of all doubt, you should cut through this doubt of mine entirely.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.15.7)
śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | manuśca dakṣasāvarṇiḥ puṇyavān vaiṣṇavaḥ śuciḥ | yaśasvī kīrtimāṁścaiva viṣṇoraṁśasamudbhavaḥ
Sri Narayana said: There was Manu Daksha-savarni, virtuous, a devotee of Vishnu, pure, famed and glorious, himself born of a portion of Vishnu.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.15.8)
tatputro brahmasāvarṇirdharmiṣṭho vaiṣṇavaḥ śuciḥ | tatputro dharmasāvarṇirvaiṣṇavaśca jitendriyaḥ
His son was Brahma-savarni, righteous, a Vaishnava, and pure; his son was Dharma-savarni, a Vaishnava of conquered senses.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.15.9)
tatputro rudrasāvarṇirbhaktimānvijitendriyaḥ | tatputro devasāvarṇirviṣṇuvrataparāyaṇaḥ
His son was Rudra-savarni, devoted and self-controlled; his son was Deva-savarni, wholly devoted to the vow of Vishnu.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.15.10)
tatputra indrasāvarṇirmahāviṣṇuparāyaṇaḥ | vṛṣadhvajaśca tatputro vṛṣadhvajaparāyaṇaḥ
His son was Indra-savarni, wholly devoted to the great Vishnu; his son was Vrishadhvaja, who was himself devoted to Vrishadhvaja, the Bull-bannered Lord.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.15.11)
yasyāśrame svayaṁ śambhurāsīddevayugatrayam | putrādapi paraḥ sneho nṛpe tasmiñchivasya ca
In whose hermitage Shambhu himself dwelt for three ages of the gods; Shiva's affection for that king was greater even than for a son.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.15.12)
na ca nārāyaṇaṁ mene na lakṣmīṁ na sarasvatīm | pūjāṁ ca sarvadevānāṁ dūrībhūtā cakāra saḥ
He did not honor Narayana, nor Lakshmi, nor Sarasvati; and he set the worship of all the other gods far from himself.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.15.13)
bhādre māsi mahālakṣmīpūjāṁ matto babhañja ha | tathā māghīyapañcamyāṁ vismṛtā sarvadaivataiḥ
In the month of Bhadra he broke off the worship of Mahalakshmi that comes from me; and likewise on the fifth of Magha he forgot the worship of all the gods.
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.15.14)
pāpaḥ sarasvatīpūjāṁ dūrībhūtā cakāra saḥ | yajñaṁ ca viṣṇupūjāṁ ca nindantaṁ taṁ divākaraḥ
That sinful one set the worship of Sarasvati far aside as well; and the Sun-god saw him reviling both sacrifice and the worship of Vishnu.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.15.15)
cukopa devo bhūpendraṁ śaśāpa śivakāraṇāt | bhraṣṭaśrīstvañca bhaveti taṁ śaśāpa divākaraḥ
The god grew angry and, because of his one-sided devotion to Shiva, cursed the king: "You shall become bereft of fortune" — thus the Sun cursed him.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.15.16)
śūlaṁ gṛhītvā taṁ sūryamadhāvacchaṅkaraḥ svayam | pitrā sārdhaṁ dineśaśca brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ yayau
Taking up his trident, Shankara himself rushed at the Sun; and the Sun-lord, together with his father, took refuge with Brahma.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.15.17)
śivastriśūlahastaśca brahmalokaṁ yayau krudhā | brahmā sūryaṁ puraskṛtya vaikuṇṭhaṁ ca yayau bhiyā
Shiva, trident in hand, went in fury to Brahmaloka; and Brahma, placing the Sun before him, went in fear to Vaikuntha.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.9.15.18)
brahmakaśyapamārtaṇḍāḥ santrastāḥ śuṣkatālukāḥ | nārāyaṇaṁ ca sarveśaṁ te yayuḥ śaraṇaṁ bhiyā
Brahma, Kashyapa, and the Sun, terrified, their palates dry with fear, went for refuge to Narayana, the Lord of all.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.9.15.19)
mūrchā praṇemuste gatvā tuṣṭuvuśca punaḥ punaḥ | sarvaṁ nivedanaṁ cakrurbhayasya kāraṇaṁ harau
Going there, half-fainting, they bowed and praised him again and again; they told Hari the whole cause of their fear.
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.9.15.20)
nārāyaṇaśca kṛpayā tebhyaśca hyabhayaṁ dadau | sthirā bhavata he bhītā bhayaṁ kiñca mayi sthite
And Narayana, out of compassion, granted them freedom from fear: "Be steady, O frightened ones — what fear can there be while I am present?"
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.15.21)
smaranti ye yatra tatra māṁ vipattau bhayānvitāḥ | tāṁstatra gatvā rakṣāmi cakrahastastvarānvitaḥ
Wherever those seized by fear in calamity remember me, there I go swiftly, discus in hand, and protect them.
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.15.22)
pātāhaṁ jagatāṁ devāḥ kartā ca satataṁ sadā | sraṣṭā ca brahmarūpeṇa saṁhartā śivarūpataḥ
O gods, I am ever and always the protector of the worlds and their maker; as Brahma I create, and as Shiva I destroy.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.15.23)
śivo'haṁ tvamahaṁ cāpi sūryo'haṁ triguṇātmakaḥ | vidhāya nānārūpaṁ ca karomi sṛṣṭipālanam
I am Shiva, I am you as well, and I am the Sun; being of the nature of the three gunas, I assume manifold forms and carry out creation and preservation.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.9.15.24)
yūyaṁ gacchata bhadraṁ vo bhaviṣyati bhayaṁ kutaḥ | adyaprabhṛti madvareṇa bhayaṁ vo nāsti śaṅkarāt
Go now, may good befall you — what fear could there be? From today, by my boon, you shall have no fear from Shankara.
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.9.15.25)
sarveśo vai sa bhagavācchaṅkaraśca satāṁ patiḥ | bhaktādhīnaśca bhaktānāṁ bhaktātmā bhaktavatsalaḥ
That Lord Shankara is indeed the master of all, the lord of the virtuous; subject to his devotees, their very soul, and ever affectionate toward them.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.9.15.26)
sudarśanaḥ śivaścaiva mama prāṇādhikaḥ priyaḥ | brahmāṇḍeṣu na tejasvī he brahmannanayoḥ paraḥ
My discus Sudarshana, and Shiva too, are dearer to me than my own life; O Brahma, in all the universes there is none more radiant than these two.
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.9.15.27)
śaktaḥ sraṣṭuṁ mahādevaḥ sūryakoṭiṁ ca līlayā | koṭiṁ ca brahmaṇāmevaṁ nāsādhyaṁ śūlinaḥ prabhoḥ
Mahadeva is capable of creating, in mere sport, a crore of suns and likewise a crore of Brahmas; nothing at all is beyond that trident-bearing Lord.
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.9.15.28)
bāhyajñānaṁ naiva kiñciddhyāyate māṁ divāniśam | manmantrānmadguṇānbhaktyā pañcavaktreṇa gāyati
Having no outward awareness at all, he meditates upon me day and night; with devotion, through his five faces, he sings my mantras and my glories.
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.9.15.29)
ahamevaṁ cintayāmi tatkalyāṇaṁ divāniśam | ye yathā māṁ prapadyante tāṁstathaiva bhajāmyaham
I too think of his welfare, in the same way, day and night; as people take refuge in me, so I in turn favor them.
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.9.15.30)
śivasvarūpo bhagavāñchivādhiṣṭhātṛdevatā | śivaṁ bhavati tasmācca śivaṁ tena vidurbudhāḥ
The Lord is of the very nature of shiva, the auspicious, and the presiding deity of it; whatever comes from him becomes auspicious, and by this the wise know him as Shiva.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.9.15.31)
etasminnantare tatra jagāma śaṅkaraḥ sthitaḥ | śūlahasto vṛṣārūḍho raktapaṅkajalocanaḥ
Meanwhile Shankara himself came there, trident in hand, mounted on his bull, his eyes red as lotuses.
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.9.15.32)
avaruhya vṛṣāttūrṇaṁ bhaktinamrātmakandharaḥ | nanāma bhaktyā taṁ śāntaṁ lakṣmīkāntaṁ parātparam
Descending quickly from his bull, his neck bowed low in devotion, he reverently bowed to that peaceful one, the beloved of Lakshmi, the Supreme beyond the supreme.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.9.15.33)
ratnasiṁhāsanasthaṁ ca ratnālaṅkārabhūṣitam | kirīṭinaṁ kuṇḍalinaṁ cakriṇaṁ vanamālinam
— seated on a jeweled throne, adorned with jeweled ornaments, crowned, wearing earrings, holding the discus, garlanded with forest flowers —
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.15.34)
navīnanīradaśyāmaṁ sundaraṁ ca caturbhujam | caturbhujaiḥ sevitaṁ ca śvetacāmaravāyunā
— dark as a fresh rain-cloud, beautiful, four-armed, and served by four-armed attendants with the breeze of white chowries.
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.9.15.35)
candanokṣitasarvāṅgaṁ bhūṣitaṁ pītavāsasam | lakṣmīpradattatāmbūlaṁ bhuktavantaṁ ca nārada
— his whole body anointed with sandal-paste, adorned, clad in yellow garments, and, O Narada, partaking of the betel offered by Lakshmi's own hand —
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.9.15.36)
vidyādharīnṛtyagītaṁ paśyantaṁ sasmitaṁ sadā | īśvaraṁ paramātmānaṁ bhaktānugrahavigraham
— ever smiling as he watched the dance and song of the Vidyadhari maidens, the Lord, the Supreme Soul, the very embodiment of grace toward his devotees.
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.15.37)
taṁ nanāma mahādevo brahmaṇā namitaśca saḥ | nanāma sūryo bhaktyā ca santrastaścandraśekharam
Mahadeva bowed to him, and he in turn was bowed to by Brahma; the terrified Sun, too, bowed with devotion to Chandrashekhara.
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.15.38)
kaśyapaśca mahābhaktyā tuṣṭāva ca nanāma ca | śivaḥ saṁstūya sarveśaṁ samuvāsa sukhāsane
Kashyapa too, with great devotion, praised him and bowed; and Shiva, having praised the Lord of all, seated himself upon a comfortable seat.
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.15.39)
sukhāsane sukhāsīnaṁ viśrāntaṁ candraśekharam | śvetacāmaravātena sevitaṁ viṣṇupārṣadaiḥ
Chandrashekhara, comfortably seated on the comfortable seat, at rest, was served by Vishnu's own attendants with the breeze of white chowries —
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.15.40)
pīyūṣatulyamadhuraṁ vacanaṁ sumanoharam | viṣṇuruvāca | āgato'si kathaṁ cātra vada kopasya kāraṇam
— words sweet as nectar, most charming. Vishnu said: "Why have you come here? Tell me the reason for your anger."
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.15.41)
mahādeva uvāca | vṛṣadhvajaṁ ca madbhaktaṁ mama prāṇādhikaṁ priyam | sūryaḥ śaśāpa iti me prakopasya tu kāraṇam
Mahadeva said: "Vrishadhvaja, my devotee, dearer to me than my own life — the Sun has cursed him; that indeed is the cause of my anger."
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.15.42)
putravatsalaśokena sūryaṁ hantuṁ samudyataḥ | sa brahmāṇaṁ prapannaśca sūryaśca sa vidhistvayi
Out of grief as for a beloved son, I resolved to slay the Sun; he took refuge with Brahma, and Brahma, together with the Sun, came to you.
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.15.43)
tvayi ye śaraṇāpannā dhyānena vacasāpi vā | nirāpado viśaṅkāste jarā mṛtyuśca tairjitaḥ
Those who take refuge in you, whether by meditation or merely by word, become free of calamity and free of fear; by them old age and death are conquered.
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.15.44)
pratyakṣaṁ śaraṇāpannāstatphalaṁ kiṁ vadāmi bhoḥ | harismṛtiścābhayadā sarvamaṅgaladā sadā
These here before you have taken refuge directly — what need have I to speak its fruit, O Lord? The remembrance of Hari itself grants fearlessness and ever bestows all auspiciousness.
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.15.45)
kiṁ me bhaktasya bhavitā tanme brūhi jagatprabho | śrīhatasyāsya mūḍhasya sūryaśāpena hetunā
What now will become of my devotee, O Lord of the world — this deluded one, bereft of fortune by reason of the Sun's curse? Tell me this.
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.15.46)
viṣṇuruvāca | kālo'tiyāto daivena yugānāmekaviṁśatiḥ | vaikuṇṭhaṁ ghaṭikārdhena śīghraṁ gaccha tvamālayam
Vishnu said: By divine ordinance twenty-one yugas have already passed below, though here in Vaikuntha barely half a ghatika has gone by; go now, quickly, to your own abode.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.15.47)
vṛṣadhvajo mṛtaḥ kālāddurnivāryātsudāruṇāt | rathadhvajaśca tatputro mṛtaḥ so'pi śriyā hataḥ
Vrishadhvaja has already died, by that dreadful and irresistible time; and his son Rathadhvaja too has died, he too bereft of fortune.
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.15.48)
tatputrau ca mahābhāgau dharmadhvajakuśadhvajau | hṛtaśriyau sūryaśāpātsmṛtau paramavaiṣṇavau
His two sons, the greatly fortunate Dharmadhvaja and Kushadhvaja, are known to be bereft of fortune by the Sun's curse, yet remembered as supreme devotees of Vishnu.
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.15.49)
rājyabhraṣṭau śriyā bhraṣṭau kamalātapasā ratau | tayośca bhāryayorlakṣmīḥ kalayā ca bhaviṣyati
Fallen from kingdom, fallen from fortune, they are now engaged in austerity for the sake of Kamala; and Lakshmi herself, in a partial manifestation, will be born to the wives of those two.
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.9.15.50)
sampadyuktau tadā tau ca nṛpaśreṣṭhau bhaviṣyataḥ | mṛtaste sevakaḥ śambho gaccha yūyaṁ ca gacchata
Then, endowed once more with prosperity, those two will become the foremost of kings; but your devotee, O Shambhu, has already died — go now, all of you, go.
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.15.51)
ityuktvā ca salakṣmīkaḥ sabhāto'bhyantaraṅgataḥ | devā jagmuḥ samprahṛṣṭāḥ svāśramaṁ parayā mudā | śivaśca tapase śīghraṁ paripūrṇatamo yayau
Having said this, he, together with Lakshmi, withdrew from the assembly into his inner chamber; the gods, greatly delighted, went to their own abodes with the utmost joy; and Shiva, now fully satisfied, went swiftly to his austerities.
