The Glory of Tulasi, Together with the Greatness of Shaligrama
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.9.24.1)
नारद उवाच । नारायणश्च भगवान्वीर्याधानं चकार ह । तुलस्यां केन रूपेण तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि
nārada uvāca | nārāyaṇaśca bhagavānvīryādhānaṁ cakāra ha | tulasyāṁ kena rūpeṇa tanme vyākhyātumarhasi
Narada said: The Lord Narayana placed his own seed within Tulasi — in what form did he do this? You should explain this to me.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.24.2)
श्रीनारायण उवाच । नारायणश्च भगवान्देवानां साधनेषु च । शङ्खचूडस्य कवचं गहीत्वा विष्णुमायया
śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | nārāyaṇaśca bhagavāndevānāṁ sādhaneṣu ca | śaṅkhacūḍasya kavacaṁ gahītvā viṣṇumāyayā
Sri Narayana said: The Lord Narayana, for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose, having taken Shankhachuda's armor by Vishnu's own maya —
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.24.3)
पुनर्विधाय तद्रूपं जगाम तत्सतीगृहम् । पातिव्रतस्य नाशेन शङ्खचूडजिघांसया
punarvidhāya tadrūpaṁ jagāma tatsatīgṛham | pātivratasya nāśena śaṅkhacūḍajighāṁsayā
— assuming his very form once more, went to that virtuous woman's house, intending, through the destruction of her marital chastity, to bring about Shankhachuda's death.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.24.4)
दुन्दुभिं वादयामास तुलसीद्वारसन्निधौ । जयशब्दं च तद्द्वारे बोधयामास सुन्दरीम्
dundubhiṁ vādayāmāsa tulasīdvārasannidhau | jayaśabdaṁ ca taddvāre bodhayāmāsa sundarīm
He caused kettledrums to be sounded near Tulasi's door, and proclaimed words of victory at that door, to alert the beautiful woman.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.24.5)
तच्छ्रुत्वा च रवं साध्वी परमानन्दसंयुता । राजमार्गे गवाक्षेण ददर्श परमादरात्
tacchrutvā ca ravaṁ sādhvī paramānandasaṁyutā | rājamārge gavākṣeṇa dadarśa paramādarāt
Hearing that sound, the virtuous woman, filled with the highest joy, looked out through a window onto the royal road, with the utmost reverence.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.24.6)
ब्राह्मणेभ्यो धनं दत्त्वा कारयामास मङ्गलम् । वन्दिभ्यो भिक्षुकेभ्यश्च वाचिभ्यश्च धनं ददौ
brāhmaṇebhyo dhanaṁ dattvā kārayāmāsa maṅgalam | vandibhyo bhikṣukebhyaśca vācibhyaśca dhanaṁ dadau
She gave wealth to the brahmins and had auspicious rites performed; she gave wealth also to bards, beggars, and singers.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.24.7)
अवरुह्य रथाद्देवो देव्याश्च भवनं ययौ । अमूल्यरत्ननिर्माणं सुन्दरं सुमनोहरम्
avaruhya rathāddevo devyāśca bhavanaṁ yayau | amūlyaratnanirmāṇaṁ sundaraṁ sumanoharam
The god descended from his chariot and went to the goddess's mansion, beautiful and most enchanting, fashioned of priceless gems.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.24.8)
दृष्ट्वा च पुरतः कान्तं सा तं कान्तं मुदान्विता । तत्पादं क्षालयामास ननाम च रुरोद च
dṛṣṭvā ca purataḥ kāntaṁ sā taṁ kāntaṁ mudānvitā | tatpādaṁ kṣālayāmāsa nanāma ca ruroda ca
Seeing her beloved before her, she, filled with joy, washed his feet, bowed to him, and wept.
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.24.9)
रत्नसिंहासने रम्ये वासयामास कामुकी । ताम्बूलं च ददौ तस्मै कर्पूरादिसुवासितम्
ratnasiṁhāsane ramye vāsayāmāsa kāmukī | tāmbūlaṁ ca dadau tasmai karpūrādisuvāsitam
That loving woman seated him upon a lovely jeweled throne, and gave him betel, fragrant with camphor and the like.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.24.10)
अद्य मे सफलं जन्म जीवनं च बभूव ह । रणे गतं च प्राणेशं पश्यन्त्याश्च पुनर्गृहे
adya me saphalaṁ janma jīvanaṁ ca babhūva ha | raṇe gataṁ ca prāṇeśaṁ paśyantyāśca punargṛhe
"Today my birth and my very life have become fruitful, seeing my lord of life, who had gone to war, once more here at home."
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.24.11)
सस्मिता सकटाक्षं च सकामा पुलकाङ्किता । पप्रच्छ रणवृत्तान्तं कान्तं मधुरया गिरा
sasmitā sakaṭākṣaṁ ca sakāmā pulakāṅkitā | papraccha raṇavṛttāntaṁ kāntaṁ madhurayā girā
Smiling, with sidelong glances, filled with longing, her body thrilled with joy — she asked her beloved for the account of the battle, in sweet tones.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.24.12)
तुलस्युवाच । असङ्ख्यविश्वसंहर्त्रा सार्धमाजौ तव प्रभो । कथं बभूव विजयस्तन्मे ब्रूहि कृपानिधे
tulasyuvāca | asaṅkhyaviśvasaṁhartrā sārdhamājau tava prabho | kathaṁ babhūva vijayastanme brūhi kṛpānidhe
Tulasi said: "O lord, how was victory achieved in battle against that destroyer of countless worlds? Tell me this, O ocean of compassion.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.24.13)
तुलसीवचनं श्रुत्वा प्रहस्य कमलापतिः । शङ्खचूडस्य रूपेण तामुवाचामृतं वचः
tulasīvacanaṁ śrutvā prahasya kamalāpatiḥ | śaṅkhacūḍasya rūpeṇa tāmuvācāmṛtaṁ vacaḥ
Hearing Tulasi's words, the Lord of Kamala laughed, and, in the form of Shankhachuda, spoke nectar-sweet words to her.
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.24.14)
श्रीभगवानुवाच । आवयोः समरः कान्ते पूर्णमब्दं बभूव ह । नाशो बभूव सर्वेषां दानवानां च कामिनि
śrībhagavānuvāca | āvayoḥ samaraḥ kānte pūrṇamabdaṁ babhūva ha | nāśo babhūva sarveṣāṁ dānavānāṁ ca kāmini
Sri Bhagavan said: "O beloved, our battle went on for a full year; and, O beloved, all the Danavas were destroyed.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.24.15)
प्रीतिञ्च कारयामास ब्रह्मा च स्वयमावयोः । देवानामधिकारश्च प्रदत्तस्तस्य चाज्ञया
prītiñca kārayāmāsa brahmā ca svayamāvayoḥ | devānāmadhikāraśca pradattastasya cājñayā
Brahma himself brought about reconciliation between us; and by his command, the gods' dominion was restored to them.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.24.16)
मयागतं स्वभवनं शिवलोकं शिवो गतः । इत्युक्त्वा जगतां नाथः शयनं च चकार ह
mayāgataṁ svabhavanaṁ śivalokaṁ śivo gataḥ | ityuktvā jagatāṁ nāthaḥ śayanaṁ ca cakāra ha
"I have come to my own home; Shiva has gone to Shivaloka." Having said this, the Lord of the worlds lay down to rest.
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.24.17)
रेमे रमापतिस्तत्र रामया सह नारद । सा साध्वी सुखसम्भोगादाकर्षणव्यतिक्रमात्
reme ramāpatistatra rāmayā saha nārada | sā sādhvī sukhasambhogādākarṣaṇavyatikramāt
There, O Narada, the Lord of Rama sported with his beloved; and that virtuous woman, even amid the joy of union, sensed something amiss —
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.9.24.18)
सर्वं वितर्कयामास कस्त्वमेवेत्युवाच सा । तुलस्युवाच । को वा त्वं वद मायेश भुक्ताहं मायया त्वया
sarvaṁ vitarkayāmāsa kastvamevetyuvāca sā | tulasyuvāca | ko vā tvaṁ vada māyeśa bhuktāhaṁ māyayā tvayā
— she reflected on everything and asked: "Who indeed are you?" Tulasi said: "Who are you truly? Tell me, O master of illusion — you have enjoyed me through deception!
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.9.24.19)
दूरीकृतं मत्सतीत्वं यदतस्त्वां शपामि हे । तुलसीवचनं श्रुत्वा हरिः शापभयेन च
dūrīkṛtaṁ matsatītvaṁ yadatastvāṁ śapāmi he | tulasīvacanaṁ śrutvā hariḥ śāpabhayena ca
"You have destroyed my chastity — for that I curse you!" Hearing Tulasi's words, Hari, out of fear of the curse —
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.9.24.20)
दधार लीलया ब्रह्मन् सुमूर्तिं सुमनोहराम् । ददर्श पुरतो देवी देवदेवं सनातनम्
dadhāra līlayā brahman sumūrtiṁ sumanoharām | dadarśa purato devī devadevaṁ sanātanam
— O brahmin, as if in play, assumed a beautiful, enchanting form; and the goddess saw before her the eternal God of gods.
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.24.21)
नवीननीरदश्यामं शरत्पङ्कजलोचनम् । कोटिकन्दर्पलीलाभं रत्नभूषणभूषितम्
navīnanīradaśyāmaṁ śaratpaṅkajalocanam | koṭikandarpalīlābhaṁ ratnabhūṣaṇabhūṣitam
— dark as a fresh rain-cloud, eyes like the autumn lotus, radiant as a crore of Kamadevas in sport, adorned with jeweled ornaments —
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.24.22)
ईषद्धास्यं प्रसन्नास्यं शोभितं पीतवाससम् । तं दृष्ट्वा कामिनी कामं मूर्च्छां सम्प्राप लीलया
īṣaddhāsyaṁ prasannāsyaṁ śobhitaṁ pītavāsasam | taṁ dṛṣṭvā kāminī kāmaṁ mūrcchāṁ samprāpa līlayā
— slightly smiling, of serene countenance, resplendent, clad in yellow garments. Seeing him, that woman fell, as if in mere play, into a swoon of longing.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.24.23)
पुनश्च चेतनां प्राप्य पुनः सा तमुवाच ह । तुलस्युवाच । हे नाथ ते दया नास्ति पाषाणसदृशस्य च
punaśca cetanāṁ prāpya punaḥ sā tamuvāca ha | tulasyuvāca | he nātha te dayā nāsti pāṣāṇasadṛśasya ca
Regaining her senses once more, she spoke to him again. Tulasi said: "O Lord, you have no mercy — you are like a very stone.
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.9.24.24)
छलेन धर्मभङ्गेन मम स्वामी त्वया हतः । पाषाणहृदयस्त्वं हि दयाहीनो यतः प्रभो
chalena dharmabhaṅgena mama svāmī tvayā hataḥ | pāṣāṇahṛdayastvaṁ hi dayāhīno yataḥ prabho
"By deceit, by breaking dharma, my husband has been slain by you; for you, O Lord, are of a stony heart, devoid of mercy.
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.9.24.25)
तस्मात्पाषाणरूपस्त्वं भवे देव भवाधुना । ये वदन्ति च साधुं त्वां ते भ्रान्ता हि न संशयः
tasmātpāṣāṇarūpastvaṁ bhave deva bhavādhunā | ye vadanti ca sādhuṁ tvāṁ te bhrāntā hi na saṁśayaḥ
"Therefore, O God, from this moment become of stone-form in this creation; those who call you righteous are, without doubt, sorely deluded.
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.9.24.26)
भक्तो विनापराधेन परार्थे च कथं हतः । भृशं रुरोद शोकार्ता विललाप मुहुर्मुहुः
bhakto vināparādhena parārthe ca kathaṁ hataḥ | bhṛśaṁ ruroda śokārtā vilalāpa muhurmuhuḥ
"How could a guiltless devotee be slain merely for another's purpose?" She wept bitterly, stricken with grief, and lamented again and again.
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.9.24.27)
ततश्च करुणां दृष्ट्वा करुणारससागरः । नयेन तां बोधयितुमुवाच कमलापतिः
tataśca karuṇāṁ dṛṣṭvā karuṇārasasāgaraḥ | nayena tāṁ bodhayitumuvāca kamalāpatiḥ
Then, seeing her grief, the Lord of Kamala, that very ocean of compassionate feeling, spoke to console her with wise words.
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.9.24.28)
श्रीभगवानुवाच । तपस्त्वया कृतं भद्रे मदर्थे भारते चिरम् । त्वदर्थे शङ्खचूडश्च चकार सुचिरं तपः
śrībhagavānuvāca | tapastvayā kṛtaṁ bhadre madarthe bhārate ciram | tvadarthe śaṅkhacūḍaśca cakāra suciraṁ tapaḥ
Sri Bhagavan said: "O gracious one, you performed austerity for a long time in Bharata for my sake; and Shankhachuda too performed austerity for a long time, for your sake.
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.9.24.29)
कृत्वा त्वां कामिनीं सोऽपि विजहार च तत्क्षणात् । अधुना दातुमुचितं तवैव तपसः फलम्
kṛtvā tvāṁ kāminīṁ so'pi vijahāra ca tatkṣaṇāt | adhunā dātumucitaṁ tavaiva tapasaḥ phalam
"Having made you his beloved, he too enjoyed your company for a while; now it is only fitting to grant you the fruit of your own austerity.
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.9.24.30)
इदं शरीरं त्यक्त्वा च दिव्यदेहं विधाय च । रामे रम मया सार्धं त्वं रमासदृशी भव
idaṁ śarīraṁ tyaktvā ca divyadehaṁ vidhāya ca | rāme rama mayā sārdhaṁ tvaṁ ramāsadṛśī bhava
"Giving up this body, and assuming a divine form, sport with me in bliss; become equal to Rama herself.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.9.24.31)
इयं तनुर्नदीरूपा गण्डकीति च विश्रुता । पूता सुपुण्यदा नॄणां पुण्ये भवतु भारते
iyaṁ tanurnadīrūpā gaṇḍakīti ca viśrutā | pūtā supuṇyadā nṝṇāṁ puṇye bhavatu bhārate
"This body of yours shall become a river, known as the Gandaki, pure and most meritorious for men, in the sacred land of Bharata.
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.9.24.32)
तव केशसमूहश्च पुण्यवृक्षो भविष्यति । तुलसीकेशसम्भूता तुलसीति च विश्रुता
tava keśasamūhaśca puṇyavṛkṣo bhaviṣyati | tulasīkeśasambhūtā tulasīti ca viśrutā
"From your mass of hair a sacred plant shall come into being; born from Tulasi's hair, it shall be known by the very name Tulasi.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.9.24.33)
त्रिषु लोकेषु पुष्पाणां पत्राणां देवपूजने । प्रधानरूपा तुलसी भविष्यति वरानने
triṣu lokeṣu puṣpāṇāṁ patrāṇāṁ devapūjane | pradhānarūpā tulasī bhaviṣyati varānane
"O fair-faced one, among all flowers and leaves in the three worlds used in the worship of the gods, Tulasi shall be foremost.
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.24.34)
स्वर्गे मर्त्ये च पाताले गोलोके मम सन्निधौ । भव त्वं तुलसी वृक्षवरा पुष्पेषु सुन्दरी
svarge martye ca pātāle goloke mama sannidhau | bhava tvaṁ tulasī vṛkṣavarā puṣpeṣu sundarī
"In heaven, on earth, in the netherworld, and in Goloka in my own presence — O Tulasi, become the foremost of plants, most beautiful among flowers.
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.9.24.35)
गोलोके विरजातीरे रासे वृन्दावने वने । भाण्डीरे चम्पकवने रम्ये चन्दनकानने
goloke virajātīre rāse vṛndāvane vane | bhāṇḍīre campakavane ramye candanakānane
"In Goloka, on the bank of the Viraja, in the Rasa-circle, in the forest of Vrindavana, at Bhandira, in the champaka grove, in the lovely forest of sandal —
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.9.24.36)
माधवीकेतकीकुन्दमालिकामालतीवने । वासस्तेऽत्रैव भवतु पुण्यस्थानेषु पुण्यदः
mādhavīketakīkundamālikāmālatīvane | vāsaste'traiva bhavatu puṇyasthāneṣu puṇyadaḥ
"— in the grove of madhavi, ketaki, kunda, and malati blossoms — let your dwelling, ever meritorious, be there, in these sacred places.
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.24.37)
तुलसीतरुमूलेषु पुण्यदेशेषु पुण्यदम् । अधिष्ठानं च तीर्थानां सर्वेषां च भविष्यति
tulasītarumūleṣu puṇyadeśeṣu puṇyadam | adhiṣṭhānaṁ ca tīrthānāṁ sarveṣāṁ ca bhaviṣyati
"At the foot of the Tulasi plant, in sacred lands, that meritorious spot shall become the seat of all sacred pilgrimage places.
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.24.38)
तत्रैव सर्वदेवानां ममाधिष्ठानमेव च । तुलसीपत्रपतनप्राप्तये च वरानने
tatraiva sarvadevānāṁ mamādhiṣṭhānameva ca | tulasīpatrapatanaprāptaye ca varānane
"There too shall dwell all the gods, and I myself; O fair-faced one, for the sake of obtaining a single fallen Tulasi leaf —
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.24.39)
स स्नातः सर्वतीर्थेषु सर्वयज्ञेषु दीक्षितः । तुलसीपत्रतोयेन योऽभिषेकं समाचरेत्
sa snātaḥ sarvatīrtheṣu sarvayajñeṣu dīkṣitaḥ | tulasīpatratoyena yo'bhiṣekaṁ samācaret
"— whoever performs an anointing with Tulasi-leaf water has thereby, as it were, bathed in every sacred water and been consecrated in every sacrifice.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.24.40)
सुधाघटसहस्राणां या तुष्टिस्तु भवेद्धरेः । सा च तुष्टिर्भवेन्नूनं तुलसीपत्रदानतः
sudhāghaṭasahasrāṇāṁ yā tuṣṭistu bhaveddhareḥ | sā ca tuṣṭirbhavennūnaṁ tulasīpatradānataḥ
"The satisfaction Hari would derive from a thousand jars of nectar — that very satisfaction is surely gained by the offering of a single Tulasi leaf.
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.24.41)
गवामयुतदानेन यत्फलं तत्फलं भवेत् । तुलसीपत्रदानेन तत्फलं कार्तिके सति
gavāmayutadānena yatphalaṁ tatphalaṁ bhavet | tulasīpatradānena tatphalaṁ kārtike sati
"Whatever fruit is gained by the gift of ten thousand cows, that same fruit is gained by the offering of a Tulasi leaf, especially in the month of Kartika.
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.24.42)
तुलसीपत्रतोयं च मृत्युकाले च यो लभेत् । मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्यो विष्णुलोके महीयते
tulasīpatratoyaṁ ca mṛtyukāle ca yo labhet | mucyate sarvapāpebhyo viṣṇuloke mahīyate
"Whoever obtains Tulasi-leaf water at the moment of death is freed from all sins and is glorified in Vishnu's own realm.
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.24.43)
नित्यं यस्तुलसीतोयं भुङ्क्ते भक्त्या च मानवः । लक्षाश्वमेधजं पुण्यं सम्प्राप्नोति स मानवः
nityaṁ yastulasītoyaṁ bhuṅkte bhaktyā ca mānavaḥ | lakṣāśvamedhajaṁ puṇyaṁ samprāpnoti sa mānavaḥ
"The man who, with devotion, drinks Tulasi-water every day attains the merit born of a hundred thousand horse-sacrifices.
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.24.44)
तुलसीं स्वकरे कृत्वा धृत्वा देहे च मानवः । प्राणांस्त्यजति तीर्थेषु विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति
tulasīṁ svakare kṛtvā dhṛtvā dehe ca mānavaḥ | prāṇāṁstyajati tīrtheṣu viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati
"The man who, holding Tulasi in his own hand and wearing it on his body, gives up his life at a sacred place, goes to Vishnu's own realm.
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.24.45)
तुलसीकाष्ठनिर्माणमालां गृह्णाति यो नरः । पदे पदेऽश्वमेधस्य लभते निश्चितं फलम्
tulasīkāṣṭhanirmāṇamālāṁ gṛhṇāti yo naraḥ | pade pade'śvamedhasya labhate niścitaṁ phalam
"The man who wears a rosary made of Tulasi wood certainly obtains, at every step he takes, the fruit of a horse-sacrifice.
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.24.46)
तुलसीं स्वकरे कृत्वा स्वीकारं यो न रक्षति । स याति कालसूत्रं च यावच्चन्द्रदिवाकरौ
tulasīṁ svakare kṛtvā svīkāraṁ yo na rakṣati | sa yāti kālasūtraṁ ca yāvaccandradivākarau
"Whoever, having taken Tulasi in hand and made a vow, fails to keep it, goes to the hell called Kalasutra, for as long as the sun and moon endure.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.24.47)
करोति मिथ्याशपथं तुलस्या योऽत्र मानवः । स याति कुम्भीपाकं च यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
karoti mithyāśapathaṁ tulasyā yo'tra mānavaḥ | sa yāti kumbhīpākaṁ ca yāvadindrāścaturdaśa
"Whatever man takes a false oath upon Tulasi goes to the hell called Kumbhipaka, for a span as long as fourteen Indras.
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.24.48)
तुलसीतोयकणिकां मृत्युकाले च यो लभेत् । रत्नयानं समारुह्य वैकुण्ठे प्राप्यते ध्रुवम्
tulasītoyakaṇikāṁ mṛtyukāle ca yo labhet | ratnayānaṁ samāruhya vaikuṇṭhe prāpyate dhruvam
"Whoever obtains even a single drop of Tulasi-water at the time of death is surely brought to Vaikuntha, mounted upon a jeweled chariot.
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.24.49)
पूर्णिमायाममायां च द्वादश्यां रविसङ्क्रमे । तैलाभ्यङ्गं च कृत्वा च मध्याह्ने निशि सन्ध्ययोः
pūrṇimāyāmamāyāṁ ca dvādaśyāṁ ravisaṅkrame | tailābhyaṅgaṁ ca kṛtvā ca madhyāhne niśi sandhyayoḥ
"On the full moon, the new moon, the twelfth lunar day, or the sun's transit; after applying oil to the body; at noon, at night, or during either twilight —
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.9.24.50)
अशौचेऽशुचिकाले ये रात्रिवासोऽन्विता नराः । तुलसीं ये विचिन्वन्ति ते छिन्दन्ति हरेः शिरः
aśauce'śucikāle ye rātrivāso'nvitā narāḥ | tulasīṁ ye vicinvanti te chindanti hareḥ śiraḥ
"— those men who, in a time of impurity, in an unclean state, wearing their night-clothes, pluck the leaves of Tulasi — they cut off, as it were, Hari's very head.
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.24.51)
त्रिरात्रं तुलसीपत्रं शुद्धं पर्युषितं सति । श्राद्धे व्रते च दाने च प्रतिष्ठायां सुरार्चने
trirātraṁ tulasīpatraṁ śuddhaṁ paryuṣitaṁ sati | śrāddhe vrate ca dāne ca pratiṣṭhāyāṁ surārcane
"A Tulasi leaf remains pure even after three nights, and may be used in shraddha rites, in vows, in gift-giving, in consecration, and in the worship of the gods —
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.9.24.52)
भूगतं तोयपतितं यद्दत्तं विष्णवे सति । शुद्धं च तुलसीपत्रं क्षालनादन्यकर्मणि
bhūgataṁ toyapatitaṁ yaddattaṁ viṣṇave sati | śuddhaṁ ca tulasīpatraṁ kṣālanādanyakarmaṇi
"— even a leaf fallen on the ground or into water, once already offered to Vishnu, becomes pure again for other rites by mere washing.
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.9.24.53)
वृक्षाधिष्ठातृदेवी या गोलोके च निरामये । कृष्णेन सार्धं नित्यं च नित्यक्रीडां करिष्यसि
vṛkṣādhiṣṭhātṛdevī yā goloke ca nirāmaye | kṛṣṇena sārdhaṁ nityaṁ ca nityakrīḍāṁ kariṣyasi
"As the presiding goddess of that plant, in the flawless realm of Goloka, you shall sport forever, together with Krishna.
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.9.24.54)
नद्यधिष्ठातृदेवी या भारते च सुपुण्यदा । लवणोदस्य सा पत्नी मदंशस्य भविष्यति
nadyadhiṣṭhātṛdevī yā bhārate ca supuṇyadā | lavaṇodasya sā patnī madaṁśasya bhaviṣyati
"And as the presiding goddess of that most meritorious river in Bharata, you shall become the wife of the salt ocean, himself a portion of me.
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.9.24.55)
त्वं च स्वयं महासाध्वी वैकुण्ठे मम सन्निधौ । रमासमा च रामा च भविष्यसि न संशयः
tvaṁ ca svayaṁ mahāsādhvī vaikuṇṭhe mama sannidhau | ramāsamā ca rāmā ca bhaviṣyasi na saṁśayaḥ
"And you yourself, that great and virtuous woman, in Vaikuntha, by my own side, shall become, without doubt, my own, equal to Rama herself.
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.9.24.56)
अहं च शैलरूपेण गण्डकीतीरसन्निधौ । अधिष्ठानं करिष्यामि भारते तव शापतः
ahaṁ ca śailarūpeṇa gaṇḍakītīrasannidhau | adhiṣṭhānaṁ kariṣyāmi bhārate tava śāpataḥ
"And I too, by your very curse, shall take up my abode, in the form of a stone, on the bank of the Gandaki, in Bharata.

कोटिसङ्ख्यास्तत्र कीटास्तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रावरायुधैः । तच्छिलाकुहरे चक्रं करिष्यन्ति मदीयकम्
koṭisaṅkhyāstatra kīṭāstīkṣṇadaṁṣṭrāvarāyudhaiḥ | tacchilākuhare cakraṁ kariṣyanti madīyakam
"Crores of insects there, with their sharp, fang-like implements, shall carve my own discus-mark into the hollows of that stone.

एकद्वारं चतुश्चक्रं वनमालाविभूषितम् । नवीननीरदाकारं लक्ष्मीनारायणाभिधम्
ekadvāraṁ catuścakraṁ vanamālāvibhūṣitam | navīnanīradākāraṁ lakṣmīnārāyaṇābhidham
A stone with a single opening, four discus-marks, adorned with a forest-garland pattern, shaped like a fresh rain-cloud — this is known as Lakshmi-Narayana.

एकद्वारं चतुश्चक्रं नवीननीरदोपमम् । लक्ष्मीजनार्दनो ज्ञेयो रहितो वनमालया
ekadvāraṁ catuścakraṁ navīnanīradopamam | lakṣmījanārdano jñeyo rahito vanamālayā
One with a single opening, four discus-marks, like a fresh rain-cloud, but without the garland pattern — should be known as Lakshmi-Janardana.
Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.9.24.60)
द्वारद्वये चतुश्चक्रं गोष्पदेन विराजितम् । रघुनाथाभिधं ज्ञेयं रहितं वनमालया
dvāradvaye catuścakraṁ goṣpadena virājitam | raghunāthābhidhaṁ jñeyaṁ rahitaṁ vanamālayā
One with two openings, four discus-marks, adorned with a cow's-hoof mark, without the garland pattern — should be known as Raghunatha.

अतिक्षुद्रं द्विचक्रं च नवीनजलदप्रभम् । तद्वामनाभिधं ज्ञेयं रहितं वनमालया
atikṣudraṁ dvicakraṁ ca navīnajaladaprabham | tadvāmanābhidhaṁ jñeyaṁ rahitaṁ vanamālayā
A very small stone with two discus-marks, radiant as a fresh rain-cloud, without the garland pattern — should be known as Vamana.
Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.9.24.62)
अतिक्षुद्रं द्विचक्रं च वनमालाविभूषितम् । विज्ञेयं श्रीधरं रूपं श्रीप्रदं गृहिणा सदा
atikṣudraṁ dvicakraṁ ca vanamālāvibhūṣitam | vijñeyaṁ śrīdharaṁ rūpaṁ śrīpradaṁ gṛhiṇā sadā
A very small stone with two discus-marks, adorned with the garland pattern — should be known as the form of Shridhara, ever bestowing prosperity on the householder.

स्थूलं च वर्तुलाकारं रहितं वनमालया । द्विचक्रं स्फुटमत्यन्तं ज्ञेयं दामोदराभिधम्
sthūlaṁ ca vartulākāraṁ rahitaṁ vanamālayā | dvicakraṁ sphuṭamatyantaṁ jñeyaṁ dāmodarābhidham
A large, round stone, without the garland pattern, with two clearly visible discus-marks — should be known by the name Damodara.

मध्यमं वर्तुलाकारं द्विचक्रं बाणविक्षतम् । रणरामाभिधं ज्ञेयं शरतूणसमन्वितम्
madhyamaṁ vartulākāraṁ dvicakraṁ bāṇavikṣatam | raṇarāmābhidhaṁ jñeyaṁ śaratūṇasamanvitam
A medium-sized, round stone with two discus-marks, marked as though wounded by arrows, along with a quiver-mark — should be known as Ranarama.

मध्यमं सप्तचक्रञ्च छत्रभूषणभूषितम् । राजराजेश्वरं ज्ञेयं राजसम्पत्प्रदं नृणाम्
madhyamaṁ saptacakrañca chatrabhūṣaṇabhūṣitam | rājarājeśvaraṁ jñeyaṁ rājasampatpradaṁ nṛṇām
A medium-sized stone with seven discus-marks, adorned with an umbrella mark — should be known as Rajarajeshvara, granting royal prosperity to men.

द्विसप्तचक्रं स्थूलं च नवनीरदसुप्रभम् । अनन्ताख्यं च विज्ञेयं चतुर्वर्गफलप्रदम्
dvisaptacakraṁ sthūlaṁ ca navanīradasuprabham | anantākhyaṁ ca vijñeyaṁ caturvargaphalapradam
A large stone with fourteen discus-marks, radiant as a fresh rain-cloud — should be known by the name Ananta, granting the fruit of all four aims of life.

चक्राकारं द्विचक्रं च सश्रीकं जलदप्रभम् । सगोष्पदं मध्यमं च विज्ञेयं मधुसूदनम्
cakrākāraṁ dvicakraṁ ca saśrīkaṁ jaladaprabham | sagoṣpadaṁ madhyamaṁ ca vijñeyaṁ madhusūdanam
A discus-shaped stone with two discus-marks, glorious, radiant as a rain-cloud, bearing a cow's-hoof mark, medium in size — should be known as Madhusudana.
Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.9.24.68)
सुदर्शनं चैकचक्रं गुप्तचक्रं गदाधरम् । द्विचक्रं हयवक्त्राभं हयग्रीवं प्रकीर्तितम्
sudarśanaṁ caikacakraṁ guptacakraṁ gadādharam | dvicakraṁ hayavaktrābhaṁ hayagrīvaṁ prakīrtitam
A stone with a single discus-mark is called Sudarshana; one with a hidden discus-mark is Gadadhara; and one with two discus-marks and a horse-face-like form is declared to be Hayagriva.
Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.9.24.69)
अतीव विस्तृतास्यं च द्विचक्रं विकटं सति । नरसिंहं सुविज्ञेयं सद्यो वैराग्यदं नृणाम्
atīva vistṛtāsyaṁ ca dvicakraṁ vikaṭaṁ sati | narasiṁhaṁ suvijñeyaṁ sadyo vairāgyadaṁ nṛṇām
One with an exceedingly wide opening, two discus-marks, fearsome — should be well known as Narasimha, instantly granting dispassion to men.
Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.9.24.70)
द्विचक्रं विस्तृतास्यं च वनमालासमन्वितम् । लक्ष्मीनृसिंहं विज्ञेयं गृहिणां च सुखप्रदम्
dvicakraṁ vistṛtāsyaṁ ca vanamālāsamanvitam | lakṣmīnṛsiṁhaṁ vijñeyaṁ gṛhiṇāṁ ca sukhapradam
One with two discus-marks, a wide opening, together with the garland pattern — should be known as Lakshmi-Narasimha, giving happiness to householders.
Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.9.24.71)
द्वारदेशे द्विचक्रं च सश्रीकं च समं स्फुटम् । वासुदेवं तु विज्ञेयं सर्वकामफलप्रदम्
dvāradeśe dvicakraṁ ca saśrīkaṁ ca samaṁ sphuṭam | vāsudevaṁ tu vijñeyaṁ sarvakāmaphalapradam
One with two discus-marks near the opening, glorious, even, clearly formed — should be known as Vasudeva, granting the fruit of every desire.
Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.9.24.72)
प्रद्युम्नं सूक्ष्मचक्रं च नवीननीरदप्रभम् । सुषिरच्छिद्रबहुलं गृहिणा च सुखप्रदम्
pradyumnaṁ sūkṣmacakraṁ ca navīnanīradaprabham | suṣiracchidrabahulaṁ gṛhiṇā ca sukhapradam
One with a fine, subtle discus-mark, radiant as a fresh rain-cloud, with many small hollow openings — this is Pradyumna, giving happiness to the householder.
Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.9.24.73)
द्वे चक्रे चैकलग्ने च पृष्ठं यत्र तु पुष्कलम् । सङ्कर्षणं सुविज्ञेयं सुखदं गृहिणां सदा
dve cakre caikalagne ca pṛṣṭhaṁ yatra tu puṣkalam | saṅkarṣaṇaṁ suvijñeyaṁ sukhadaṁ gṛhiṇāṁ sadā
One with two discus-marks joined together, with an ample back — should be well known as Sankarshana, ever giving happiness to householders.
Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.9.24.74)
अनिरुद्धं तु पीताभं वर्तुलं चातिशोभनम् । सुखप्रदं गृहस्थानां प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः
aniruddhaṁ tu pītābhaṁ vartulaṁ cātiśobhanam | sukhapradaṁ gṛhasthānāṁ pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ
A yellow-hued, round, most beautiful stone the wise declare to be Aniruddha, bestowing happiness upon householders.
Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.9.24.75)
शालग्रामशिला यत्र तत्र सन्निहितो हरिः । तत्रैव लक्ष्मीर्वसति सर्वतीर्थसमन्विता
śālagrāmaśilā yatra tatra sannihito hariḥ | tatraiva lakṣmīrvasati sarvatīrthasamanvitā
Wherever a Shaligrama stone is, there Hari himself is present; and there too Lakshmi dwells, together with all sacred pilgrimage places.
Verse 76 (devibhagavatam.9.24.76)
यानि कानि च पापानि ब्रह्महत्यादिकानि च । तानि सर्वाणि नश्यन्ति शालग्रामशिलार्चनात्
yāni kāni ca pāpāni brahmahatyādikāni ca | tāni sarvāṇi naśyanti śālagrāmaśilārcanāt
Whatever sins there be, even those beginning with the killing of a brahmin, all of them are destroyed by the worship of a Shaligrama stone.
Verse 77 (devibhagavatam.9.24.77)
छत्राकारे भवेद्राज्यं वर्तुले च महाश्रियः । दुःखञ्च शकटाकारे शूलाग्रे मरणं ध्रुवम्
chatrākāre bhavedrājyaṁ vartule ca mahāśriyaḥ | duḥkhañca śakaṭākāre śūlāgre maraṇaṁ dhruvam
An umbrella-shaped stone brings kingship, and a round one brings great fortune; a cart-shaped one brings sorrow, and one pointed like a spear-tip brings certain death.
Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.9.24.78)
विकृतास्ये च दारिद्र्यं पिङ्गले हानिरेव च । भग्नचक्रे भवेद्व्याधिर्विदीर्णे मरणं ध्रुवम्
vikṛtāsye ca dāridryaṁ piṅgale hānireva ca | bhagnacakre bhavedvyādhirvidīrṇe maraṇaṁ dhruvam
A distorted-mouthed one brings poverty, a tawny-hued one brings loss; one with a broken discus-mark brings disease, and a cracked one brings certain death.
Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.9.24.79)
व्रतं दानं प्रतिष्ठा च श्राद्धं च देवपूजनम् । शालग्रामस्य सान्निध्यात्प्रशस्तं तद्भवेदिति
vrataṁ dānaṁ pratiṣṭhā ca śrāddhaṁ ca devapūjanam | śālagrāmasya sānnidhyātpraśastaṁ tadbhavediti
Vows, gifts, consecration, ancestral rites, and the worship of the gods — all of these become most excellent when performed in the presence of a Shaligrama.
Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.9.24.80)
स स्नातः सर्वतीर्थेषु सर्वयज्ञेषु दीक्षितः । सर्वयज्ञेषु तीर्थेषु व्रतेषु च तपःसु च
sa snātaḥ sarvatīrtheṣu sarvayajñeṣu dīkṣitaḥ | sarvayajñeṣu tīrtheṣu vrateṣu ca tapaḥsu ca
He has, as it were, bathed in every sacred water and been consecrated in every sacrifice; whatever merit is gained in all sacrifices, sacred places, vows, and austerities —
Verse 81 (devibhagavatam.9.24.81)
पाठे चतुर्णां वेदानां तपसां करणे सति । तत्पुण्यं लभते नूनं शालग्रामशिलार्चनात्
pāṭhe caturṇāṁ vedānāṁ tapasāṁ karaṇe sati | tatpuṇyaṁ labhate nūnaṁ śālagrāmaśilārcanāt
— and whatever merit comes from reciting the four Vedas and performing austerities, that same merit is certainly obtained through the worship of a Shaligrama stone.
Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.9.24.82)
(शालग्रामशिलातोयैर्योऽभिषेकं सदा चरेत् । सर्वदानेषु यत्पुण्यं प्रदक्षिणं भुवो यथा ॥)॥ शालग्रामशिलातोयं नित्यं भुङ्क्ते च यो नरः । सुरेप्सितं प्रसादं च लभते नात्र संशयः
(śālagrāmaśilātoyairyo'bhiṣekaṁ sadā caret | sarvadāneṣu yatpuṇyaṁ pradakṣiṇaṁ bhuvo yathā ||)|| śālagrāmaśilātoyaṁ nityaṁ bhuṅkte ca yo naraḥ | surepsitaṁ prasādaṁ ca labhate nātra saṁśayaḥ
(Whoever always performs anointing with Shaligrama-stone water gains the same merit as every kind of gift-giving, or as circumambulating the whole earth.) The man who daily drinks Shaligrama-stone water obtains, without doubt, the very grace desired even by the gods.
Verse 83 (devibhagavatam.9.24.83)
तस्य स्पर्शं च वाञ्छन्ति तीर्थानि निखिलानि च । जीवन्मुक्तो महापूतोऽप्यन्ते याति हरेः पदम्
tasya sparśaṁ ca vāñchanti tīrthāni nikhilāni ca | jīvanmukto mahāpūto'pyante yāti hareḥ padam
All the sacred pilgrimage places long for his touch; he becomes liberated while yet living, most pure, and in the end attains Hari's own supreme abode.
Verse 84 (devibhagavatam.9.24.84)
तत्रैव हरिणा सार्धमसङ्ख्यं प्राकृतं लयम् । यास्यत्येव हि दास्ये च नियुक्तो दास्यकर्मणि
tatraiva hariṇā sārdhamasaṅkhyaṁ prākṛtaṁ layam | yāsyatyeva hi dāsye ca niyukto dāsyakarmaṇi
There, together with Hari, he shall remain through countless cosmic dissolutions, ever engaged in devoted service to him.
Verse 85 (devibhagavatam.9.24.85)
यानि कानि च पापानि ब्रह्महत्यासमानि च । तं दृष्ट्वा च पलायन्ते वैनतेयादिवोरगाः
yāni kāni ca pāpāni brahmahatyāsamāni ca | taṁ dṛṣṭvā ca palāyante vainateyādivoragāḥ
Whatever sins there be, even those equal to the killing of a brahmin, flee at the sight of him, as serpents flee from the son of Vinata.
Verse 86 (devibhagavatam.9.24.86)
तत्पादरजसा देवी सद्यःपूता वसुन्धरा । पुंसां लक्षं तत्पितॄणां निस्तरेत्तस्य जन्मतः
tatpādarajasā devī sadyaḥpūtā vasundharā | puṁsāṁ lakṣaṁ tatpitṝṇāṁ nistarettasya janmataḥ
By the dust of his feet the goddess Earth is instantly purified; and by his very birth, a hundred thousand of his ancestors are delivered.
Verse 87 (devibhagavatam.9.24.87)
शालग्रामशिलातोयं मृत्युकाले च यो लभेत् । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति
śālagrāmaśilātoyaṁ mṛtyukāle ca yo labhet | sarvapāpavinirmukto viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati
Whoever obtains Shaligrama-water at the time of death is freed from all sin and goes to Vishnu's own realm.
Verse 88 (devibhagavatam.9.24.88)
निर्वाणमुक्तिं लभते कर्मभोगात्प्रमुच्यते । विष्णोः पदे प्रलीनश्च भविष्यति न संशयः
nirvāṇamuktiṁ labhate karmabhogātpramucyate | viṣṇoḥ pade pralīnaśca bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ
He obtains the liberation of nirvana, is freed from the bondage of karmic fruit, and, without doubt, becomes merged in Vishnu's own supreme abode.
Verse 89 (devibhagavatam.9.24.89)
शालग्रामशिलां धृत्वा मिथ्यावाक्यं वदेत्तु यः । स याति कुम्भीपाके च यावद्वै ब्रह्मणो वयः
śālagrāmaśilāṁ dhṛtvā mithyāvākyaṁ vadettu yaḥ | sa yāti kumbhīpāke ca yāvadvai brahmaṇo vayaḥ
Whoever, having held a Shaligrama stone, speaks a false word, goes to the hell called Kumbhipaka, for a span as long as Brahma's own lifespan.
Verse 90 (devibhagavatam.9.24.90)
शालग्रामशिलां धृत्वा स्वीकारं यो न पालयेत् । स प्रयात्यसिपत्रं च लक्षमन्वन्तरावधि
śālagrāmaśilāṁ dhṛtvā svīkāraṁ yo na pālayet | sa prayātyasipatraṁ ca lakṣamanvantarāvadhi
Whoever, having held a Shaligrama stone and made a vow, fails to keep it, goes to the hell called Asipatra, for a hundred thousand Manvantaras.
Verse 91 (devibhagavatam.9.24.91)
तुलसीपत्रविच्छेदं शालग्रामे करोति यः । तस्य जन्मान्तरे कान्ते स्त्रीविच्छेदो भविष्यति
tulasīpatravicchedaṁ śālagrāme karoti yaḥ | tasya janmāntare kānte strīvicchedo bhaviṣyati
Whoever removes a Tulasi leaf offered to a Shaligrama shall suffer, in a future birth, O beloved, separation from his wife.
Verse 92 (devibhagavatam.9.24.92)
तुलसीपत्रविच्छेदं शङ्खे यो हि करोति च । भार्याहीनो भवेत्सोऽपि रोगी च सप्तजन्मसु
tulasīpatravicchedaṁ śaṅkhe yo hi karoti ca | bhāryāhīno bhavetso'pi rogī ca saptajanmasu
Whoever removes a Tulasi leaf offered upon a conch shall likewise remain bereft of a wife, and diseased, for seven births.
Verse 93 (devibhagavatam.9.24.93)
शालग्रामं च तुलसीं शङ्खं चैकत्र एव च । यो रक्षति महाज्ञानी स भवेच्छ्रीहरेः प्रियः
śālagrāmaṁ ca tulasīṁ śaṅkhaṁ caikatra eva ca | yo rakṣati mahājñānī sa bhavecchrīhareḥ priyaḥ
He who keeps the Shaligrama, the Tulasi, and the conch together in one place, that man of great wisdom becomes dear to Sri Hari.
Verse 94 (devibhagavatam.9.24.94)
सकृदेव हि यो यस्यां वीर्याधानं करोति च । तद्विच्छेदे तस्य दुःखं भवेदेव परस्परम्
sakṛdeva hi yo yasyāṁ vīryādhānaṁ karoti ca | tadvicchede tasya duḥkhaṁ bhavedeva parasparam
Whoever places his seed even once within any woman — should separation follow, it brings mutual sorrow to them both.
Verse 95 (devibhagavatam.9.24.95)
त्वं प्रिया शङ्खचूडस्य चैकमन्वन्तरावधि । शङ्खेन सार्धं त्वद्भेदः केवलं दुःखदस्तथा
tvaṁ priyā śaṅkhacūḍasya caikamanvantarāvadhi | śaṅkhena sārdhaṁ tvadbhedaḥ kevalaṁ duḥkhadastathā
You were the beloved of Shankhachuda for the span of one whole Manvantara; separation from the conch, likewise, would bring you only sorrow.
Verse 96 (devibhagavatam.9.24.96)
इत्युक्त्वा श्रीहरिस्तां च विरराम च नारद । सा च देहं परित्यज्य दिव्यरूपं विधाय च
ityuktvā śrīharistāṁ ca virarāma ca nārada | sā ca dehaṁ parityajya divyarūpaṁ vidhāya ca
Having said this, Sri Hari fell silent, O Narada; and she, giving up her body, assuming a divine form —

यथा श्रीश्च तथा सा चाप्युवास हरिवक्षसि । स जगाम तया सार्धं वैकुण्ठं कमलापतिः
yathā śrīśca tathā sā cāpyuvāsa harivakṣasi | sa jagāma tayā sārdhaṁ vaikuṇṭhaṁ kamalāpatiḥ
— dwelt upon Hari's own chest, just as Shri herself does; and the Lord of Kamala went with her to Vaikuntha.
Verse 98 (devibhagavatam.9.24.98)
लक्ष्मीः सरस्वती गङ्गा तुलसी चापि नारद । हरेः प्रियाश्चतस्रश्च बभूवुरीश्वरस्य च
lakṣmīḥ sarasvatī gaṅgā tulasī cāpi nārada | hareḥ priyāścatasraśca babhūvurīśvarasya ca
Lakshmi, Sarasvati, Ganga, and Tulasi too, O Narada, thus became the four beloveds of Hari, the Lord.
Verse 99 (devibhagavatam.9.24.99)
सद्यस्तद्देहजाता च बभूव गण्डकी नदी । ईश्वरः सोऽपि शैलश्च तत्तीरे पुण्यदो नृणाम्
sadyastaddehajātā ca babhūva gaṇḍakī nadī | īśvaraḥ so'pi śailaśca tattīre puṇyado nṛṇām
From her body the river Gandaki was born at once; and the Lord too took his place on its bank, in the form of a stone, granting merit to men.
Verse 100 (devibhagavatam.9.24.100)
कुर्वन्ति तत्र कीटाश्च शिलां बहुविधां मुने । जले पतन्ति या याश्च फलदास्ताश्च निश्चितम्
kurvanti tatra kīṭāśca śilāṁ bahuvidhāṁ mune | jale patanti yā yāśca phaladāstāśca niścitam
There, O sage, insects fashion the stone into many forms; whichever of them fall into the water are certainly fruit-bearing.
Verse 101 (devibhagavatam.9.24.101)
स्थलस्थाः पिङ्गला ज्ञेयाश्चोपतापाद्रवेरिति । इत्येवं कथितं सर्वं किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि
sthalasthāḥ piṅgalā jñeyāścopatāpādraveriti | ityevaṁ kathitaṁ sarvaṁ kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi
Those that remain on land should be known as tawny-colored, owing to the sun's heat. Thus all has been told — what more do you wish to hear?
