Skandha 9 · Chapter 26

The Rite of Savitri Worship

Chapter 25All chaptersChapter 27

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.9.26.1)

nārada uvāca | tulasyupākhyānamidaṁ śrutaṁ cātisudhopamam | tataḥ sāvitryupākhyānaṁ tanme vyākhyātumarhasi

Narada said: This tale of Tulasi that I have heard is like the finest nectar. Now please be so good as to explain to me the tale of Savitri.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.26.2)

purā kena samudbhūtā sā śrutā ca śruteḥ prasūḥ | kena vā pūjitā loke prathame kaiśca vā pare

Of old, from whom was she born — she who is famed as the mother of the Vedas, as I have heard? Who first worshipped her in this world, and who else did so afterward?

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.26.3)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | brahmaṇā vedajananī prathame pūjitā mune | dvitīye ca vedagaṇaistatpaścādviduṣāṁ gaṇaiḥ

Sri Narayana said: O sage, the mother of the Vedas was worshipped first by Brahma; in the second age by the assemblies of the Vedas, and after that by assemblies of the learned.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.26.4)

tadā cāśvapatirbhūpaḥ pūjayāmāsa bhārate | tatpaścātpūjayāmāsurvarṇāścatvāra eva ca

Then, in Bharata, King Ashvapati worshipped her; and after that all four varnas worshipped her as well.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.26.5)

nārada uvāca | ko vā so'śvapatirbrahman kena vā tena pūjitā | sarvapūjyā ca sā devī prathame kaiśca vā pare

Narada said: O Brahman, who was that Ashvapati, and how did he worship her? That goddess worthy of worship by all — by whom was she first worshipped, and by whom thereafter?

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.26.6)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | madradeśe mahārājo babhūvāśvapatirmune | vairiṇāṁ balahartā ca mitrāṇāṁ duḥkhanāśanaḥ

Sri Narayana said: O sage, in the land of Madra there was a great king named Ashvapati, who took away the strength of his foes and destroyed the sorrows of his friends.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.26.7)

āsīttasya mahārājñī mahiṣī dharmacāriṇī | mālatīti samākhyātā yathā lakṣmīrgadābhṛtaḥ

He had a great queen, his chief consort, devoted to dharma, named Malati — as Lakshmi is to the mace-bearer, Vishnu.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.26.8)

sā ca rājñī ca vandhyā ca vasiṣṭhasyopadeśataḥ | cakārārādhanaṁ bhaktyā sāvitryāścaiva nārada

That queen was childless, O Narada, and on Vasishtha's instruction she performed, with devotion, the worship of Savitri.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.26.9)

pratyādeśaṁ na sā prāptā mahiṣī na dadarśa tām | gṛhaṁ jagāma duḥkhārtā hṛdayena vidūyatā

The queen received no answer, nor did she behold the goddess. Stricken with grief, her heart aflame with anguish, she returned home.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.26.10)

rājā tāṁ duḥkhitāṁ dṛṣṭvā bodhayitvā nayena vai | sāvitryāstapase bhaktyā jagāma puṣkaraṁ tadā

The king, seeing her grieved, comforted her with wise counsel, and then himself went, in devotion, to Pushkara to perform austerity for Savitri.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.26.11)

tapaścakāra tatraiva saṁyataḥ śatavatsaram | na dadarśa ca sāvitryā pratyādeśo babhūva ca

There he practiced austerity, self-restrained, for a hundred years. Yet he did not behold her, nor did any answer come from Savitri.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.26.12)

śuśrāvākāśavāṇīṁ ca nṛpendraścāśarīriṇīm | gāyatryā daśalakṣaṁ ca japaṁ tvaṁ kuru nārada

Then the foremost of kings heard a bodiless voice from the sky: "O Narada, perform ten hundred-thousand repetitions of the Gayatri."

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.26.13)

etasminnantare tatra ājagāma parāśaraḥ | praṇanāma tatastaṁ ca munirnṛpamuvāca ca

Meanwhile, the sage Parashara arrived there. He bowed to the king, and then the sage spoke to him.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.26.14)

muniruvāca | sakṛjjapaśca gāyatryāḥ pāpaṁ dinabhavaṁ haret | daśavāraṁ japenaiva naśyetpāpaṁ divāniśam

The sage said: A single repetition of the Gayatri destroys the sin accumulated in a day. Ten repetitions destroy the sin of a full day and night.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.26.15)

śatavāraṁ japaścaiva pāpaṁ māsārjitaṁ haret | sahasradhā japaścaiva kalmaṣaṁ vatsarārjitam

A hundred repetitions remove the sin gathered in a month, and a thousand repetitions remove the taint gathered in a year.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.26.16)

lakṣo janmakṛtaṁ pāpaṁ daśalakṣo'nyajanmajam | sarvajanmakṛtaṁ pāpaṁ śatalakṣādvinaśyati

A hundred thousand repetitions destroy the sin of one lifetime; ten hundred thousand destroy the sin born in another life; and a full crore destroys all the sin accumulated across every lifetime.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.26.17)

karoti muktiṁ viprāṇāṁ japo daśaguṇastataḥ | karaṁ sarpaphaṇākāraṁ kṛtvā tadrandhamudritam

Beyond that, a tenfold measure of japa grants brahmins liberation. Forming the hand in the shape of a serpent's hood, with the gap between the fingers sealed shut —

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.9.26.18)

ānamramūrdhamacalaṁ prajapetprāṅmukho dvijaḥ | anāmikāmadhyadeśādadho'vāmakrameṇa ca

the twice-born should recite facing east, head bowed, motionless — counting from the middle segment of the ring finger downward, in reverse order,

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.9.26.19)

tarjanīmūlaparyantaṁ japasyaivaṁ kramaḥ kare | śvetapaṅkajabījānāṁ sphaṭikānāṁ ca saṁskṛtām

up to the base of the index finger — such is the order for counting japa on the hand. As for the rosary: made from white-lotus seeds or from crystal, duly consecrated —

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.9.26.20)

kṛtvā vai mālikāṁ rājan japettīrthe surālaye | saṁsthāpya mālāmaśvatthapatre padme ca saṁyataḥ

Having made such a rosary, O king, one should recite japa at a sacred site or in a temple. Self-restrained, having placed the rosary upon a pipal leaf or a lotus —

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.26.21)

kṛtvā gorocanāktāṁ ca gāyatryā snāpayetsudhīḥ | gāyatrīśatakaṁ tasyāṁ japecca vidhipūrvakam

having anointed it with gorochana, the wise practitioner should bathe it with the Gayatri mantra and, according to rule, recite the Gayatri a hundred times over it.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.26.22)

athavā pañcagavyena snātvā mālāṁ susaṁskṛtām | atha gaṅgodakenaiva snātvā vātisusaṁskṛtām

Or, having bathed the rosary in the five products of the cow, it becomes duly consecrated; or, bathed in the waters of the Ganga, it becomes most excellently consecrated.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.26.23)

evaṁ krameṇa rājarṣe daśalakṣaṁ japaṁ kuru | sākṣāddrakṣyasi sāvitrīṁ trijanmapātakakṣayāt

In this manner, O royal sage, perform ten hundred thousand japas. When the sin of three births is destroyed, you shall see Savitri face to face.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.9.26.24)

nityaṁ sandhyāṁ ca he rājan kariṣyasi dine dine | madhyāhne cāpi sāyāhne prātareva śuciḥ sadā

Daily, O king, you must perform the sandhya rite every day — at midday, in the evening, and in the morning too, ever remaining pure.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.9.26.25)

sandhyāhīno'śucirnityamanarhaḥ sarvakarmasu | yadahnā kurute karma na tasya phalabhāgbhavet

One who neglects the sandhya is ever impure and unfit for any rite. Whatever action he performs during the day, he does not partake of its fruit.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.9.26.26)

nopatiṣṭhati yaḥ pūrvāṁ nopāste yastu paścimām | sa śūdravadbahiṣkāryaḥ sarvasmād dvijakarmaṇaḥ

He who does not attend the morning sandhya, nor observe the evening one, should be excluded, like a shudra, from all the rites of the twice-born.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.9.26.27)

yāvajjīvanaparyantaṁ triḥsandhyāṁ yaḥ karoti ca | sa ca sūryasamo viprastejasā tapasā sadā

He who performs the threefold sandhya throughout his life — that brahmin is, in radiance and austerity, ever equal to the sun.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.9.26.28)

tatpādapadmarajasā sadyaḥpūtā vasundharā | jīvanmuktaḥ sa tejasvī sandhyāpūto hi yo dvijaḥ

By the dust of his lotus feet the earth is instantly purified. That radiant twice-born one, purified by the sandhya, is indeed liberated even while alive.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.9.26.29)

tīrthāni ca pavitrāṇi tasya saṁsparśamātrataḥ | tataḥ pāpāni yāntyeva vainateyādivoragāḥ

By his mere touch even sacred tirthas are purified; sins flee from him, just as serpents flee before Garuda, the son of Vinata.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.9.26.30)

na gṛhṇanti surāḥ pūjāṁ pitaraḥ piṇḍatarpaṇam | svecchayā ca dvijāteśca trisandhyārahitasya ca

The gods do not willingly accept the worship, nor do the ancestors accept the pinda-offerings, of a twice-born who neglects the threefold sandhya.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.9.26.31)

mūlaprakṛtyabhakto yastanmantrasyāpyanarcakaḥ | tadutsavavihīnaśca viṣahīno yathoragaḥ

He who is not devoted to the Root Prakriti, who does not worship her mantra, and who is devoid of her festivals — he is like a snake without venom.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.9.26.32)

viṣṇumantravihīnaśca trisandhyārahito dvijaḥ | ekādaśīvihīnaśca viṣahīno yathoragaḥ

The twice-born devoid of the Vishnu-mantra, without the threefold sandhya, and without the observance of Ekadashi — he is like a snake without venom.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.9.26.33)

hareranaivedyabhojī dhāvako vṛṣavāhakaḥ | śūdrānnabhojī yo vipro viṣahīno yathoragaḥ

He who eats food not first offered to Hari, who runs as a hired courier, who drives cattle for hire, or the brahmin who eats a shudra's food — he is like a snake without venom.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.26.34)

śūdrāṇāṁ śavadāhī yaḥ sa vipro vṛṣalīpatiḥ | śūdrāṇāṁ sūpakāraśca viṣahīno yathoragaḥ

The brahmin who cremates the corpses of shudras, or who is husband to a shudra woman, or who cooks for shudras — he is like a snake without venom.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.9.26.35)

śūdrāṇāṁ ca pratigrāhī śūdrayājī ca yo dvijaḥ | masijīvī asijīvī viṣahīno yathoragaḥ

The twice-born who accepts gifts from shudras, who officiates as priest for shudras, who lives by the pen or by the sword — he is like a snake without venom.

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.9.26.36)

yaḥ kanyāvikrayī vipro yo harernāmavikrayī | yo vipro'vīrānnabhojī ṛtusnātānnabhojakaḥ

The brahmin who sells his daughter, who sells the Name of Hari, who eats food from a household without a male protector, or who eats food offered by a woman fresh from her menstrual bathing —

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.26.37)

bhagajīvī bārdhuṣiko viṣahīno yathoragaḥ | yo vidyāvikayī vipro viṣahīno yathoragaḥ

He who lives off a courtesan's earnings, the usurer — he is like a snake without venom. The brahmin who sells his learning — he too is like a snake without venom.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.26.38)

sūryodaye svapedyo hi matsyabhojī ca yo dvijaḥ | śivāpūjādirahito viṣahīno yathoragaḥ

He who still sleeps at sunrise, the twice-born who eats fish, and he who neglects the worship of the Goddess — he is like a snake without venom.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.26.39)

ityuktvā ca muniśreṣṭhaḥ sarvapūjāvidhikramam | tamuvāca ca sāvitryā dhyānādikamabhīpsitam

Having thus described the entire procedure of worship, the foremost of sages then, as the king desired, related to him the meditation-verse and other rites of Savitri.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.26.40)

dattvā sarvaṁ nṛpendrāya yayau ca svāśrame mune | rājā sampūjya sāvitrīṁ dadarśa varamāpa ca

Having given all this to the king, the sage returned to his own hermitage. The king, having worshipped Savitri, beheld her and received a boon as well.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.26.41)

nārada uvāca | kiṁ vā dhyānaṁ ca sāvitryāḥ kiṁ vā pūjāvidhānakam | stotraṁ mantraṁ ca kiṁ dattvā prayayau sa parāśaraḥ

Narada said: What was the meditation-verse of Savitri, and what was the procedure of her worship? What hymn and mantra did Parashara give before he departed?

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.26.42)

nṛpaḥ kena vidhānena sampūjya śrutimātaram | varaṁ ca kaṁ vā samprāpa sampūjya tu vidhānataḥ

By what procedure did the king worship the Mother of the Vedas, and what boon did he obtain, having worshipped her duly according to rule?

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.26.43)

tatsarvaṁ śrotumicchāmi sāvitryāḥ paramaṁ mahat | rahasyātirahasyaṁ ca śrutisiddhaṁ samāsataḥ

I wish to hear all of it — the supreme greatness of Savitri, her most secret mystery, established in the Shruti — in brief.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.26.44)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | jyeṣṭhakṛṣṇatrayodaśyāṁ śuddhakāle ca yatnataḥ | vratameva caturdaśyāṁ vratī bhaktyā samācaret

Sri Narayana said: On the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight of Jyeshtha, at a purified time, with diligence, and on the fourteenth day, the votary should observe the vow with devotion.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.26.45)

vrataṁ caturdaśābdaṁ ca dvisaptaphalasaṁyutam | dattvā dvisaptanaivedyaṁ puṣpadhūpādikaṁ caret

The vow continues for fourteen years, accompanied by fourteen fruits. Offering fourteen items of naivedya, one should perform it with flowers, incense, and the like.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.26.46)

vastraṁ yajñopavītaṁ ca bhojanaṁ vidhipūrvakam | saṁsthāpya maṅgalaghaṭaṁ phalaśākhāsamanvitam

Cloth, the sacred thread, and food should be duly offered. Having set up the auspicious kalasha along with fruit and branches —

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.26.47)

gaṇeśaṁ ca dineśaṁ ca vahniṁ viṣṇuṁ śivaṁ śivām | sampūjya pūjayediṣṭaṁ ghaṭe āvāhite dvijaḥ

the twice-born should worship Ganesha, the Sun, Fire, Vishnu, Shiva, and Shiva's consort, and, having invoked the chosen deity into the pot, should worship her.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.26.48)

śṛṇu dhyānaṁ ca sāvitryāścoktaṁ mādhyandine ca yat | stotraṁ pūjāvidhānaṁ ca mantraṁ ca sarvakāmadam

Now hear the meditation-verse of Savitri as declared in the Madhyandina branch, along with the hymn, the procedure of worship, and the mantra that grants every desire.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.26.49)

taptakāñcanavarṇābhāṁ jvalantīṁ brahmatejasā | grīṣmamadhyāhnamārtaṇḍasahasrasammitaprabhām

I meditate on her whose radiance is like molten gold, blazing with the splendor of Brahman, whose brilliance equals a thousand midday suns of summer.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.9.26.50)

īṣaddhāsyaprasannāsyāṁ ratnabhūṣaṇabhūṣitām | vahniśuddhāṁśukādhānāṁ bhaktānugrahavigrahām

Whose face, gently smiling, is filled with delight; who is adorned with jeweled ornaments; who wears garments pure as fire; whose very form is grace itself upon her devotees.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.26.51)

sukhadāṁ muktidāṁ śāntāṁ kāntāṁ ca jagatāṁ vidheḥ | sarvasampatsvarūpāṁ ca pradātrīṁ sarvasampadām

Who grants happiness, who grants liberation, who is peaceful, and who is the beloved of Brahma, creator of the worlds; who is herself the very embodiment of all prosperity, and the bestower of every prosperity.

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.9.26.52)

vedādhiṣṭhātṛdevīṁ ca vedaśāstrasvarūpiṇīm | vedabījasvarūpāṁ ca bhaje tāṁ vedamātaram

I worship her, the presiding deity of the Vedas, whose very form is the Vedas and their scriptures, whose form is the seed of the Vedas — her, the Mother of the Vedas.

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.9.26.53)

dhyātvā dhyānena naivedyaṁ dattvā pāṇiṁ svamūrdhani | punardhyātvā ghaṭe bhaktyā devīmāvāhayed vratī

Having meditated with this meditation and offered the naivedya, placing the hand on one's own head, and meditating once more, the votary should, with devotion, invoke the goddess into the pot.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.9.26.54)

dattvā ṣoḍaśopacāraṁ vedoktaṁ mantrapūrvakam | sampūjya stutvā praṇameddevadevīṁ vidhānataḥ

Having offered the sixteen ritual attentions declared in the Veda, each preceded by its mantra, and having worshipped and praised her, one should bow to the goddess of gods according to rule.

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.9.26.55)

āsanaṁ pādyamarghyaṁ ca snānīyaṁ cānulepanam | dhūpaṁ dīpaṁ ca naivedyaṁ tāmbūlaṁ śītalaṁ jalam

A seat, water for the feet, the arghya offering, bathing-water, anointment, incense, a lamp, the food-offering, betel, and cool water —

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.9.26.56)

Then the votary should, with devotion, give dakshina to a brahmin. In the mantra, "Sāvitryai" (in the dative) is joined at the end with "the wife of Fire" (Svāhā) —

viprajīvanarūpaṁ ca nibodha kathayāmi te | kṛṣṇena dattāṁ sāvitrīṁ goloke brahmaṇe purā

Now understand this account, the very lifeblood of brahmins; I shall tell you how, long ago in Goloka, Krishna gave Savitri to Brahma.

Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.9.26.78)

O Narada, she did not go with him to Brahmaloka. By Krishna's command, Brahma, with devotion, praised and pleased the Mother of the Vedas.

Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.9.26.79)

tadā sā parituṣṭā ca brahmāṇaṁ cakame patim | brahmovāva saccidānandarūpe tvaṁ mūlaprakṛtirūpiṇi

Then, well pleased, she came to desire Brahma as her husband. Brahma said: "You are of the nature of Existence-Consciousness-Bliss, the very form of the Root Prakriti,"

Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.9.26.80)

Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.9.26.82)

sarvamaṅgalarūpe ca prasannā bhava sundari | sarvasvarūpe viprāṇāṁ mantrasāre parātpare

"O you who are the form of all auspiciousness, be pleased, O beautiful one. O you who are everything to brahmins, the very essence of mantra, supreme above the supreme,"

Verse 83 (devibhagavatam.9.26.83)

sukhade mokṣade devi prasannā bhava sundari | viprapāpedhmadāhāya jvaladagniśikhopame

"O goddess who grants happiness and liberation, be pleased, O beautiful one. O you who are like a blazing flame of fire, burning away the fuel of brahmins' sins,"

Verse 84 (devibhagavatam.9.26.84)

bahmatejaḥprade devi prasannā bhava sundari | kāyena manasā vācā yatpāpaṁ kurute naraḥ

"O goddess who bestows the radiance of Brahman, be pleased, O beautiful one. Whatever sin a man commits by body, mind, or speech —"

Verse 85 (devibhagavatam.9.26.85)

tattvatsmaraṇamātreṇa bhasmībhūtaṁ bhaviṣyati | ityuktvā jagatāṁ dhātā tasthau tatraiva saṁsadi

"— that, merely by remembering you, shall be reduced to ashes." Having spoken thus, the Creator of the worlds remained there in that very assembly.

Verse 86 (devibhagavatam.9.26.86)

sāvitrī brahmaṇā sārdhaṁ brahmalokaṁ jagāma sā | anena stavarājena saṁstūyāśvapatirnṛpaḥ

Then Savitri went together with Brahma to Brahmaloka. Having praised her with this king of hymns, King Ashvapati —

Verse 87 (devibhagavatam.9.26.87)

dadarśa tāṁ ca sāvitrīṁ varaṁ prāpa manogatam | stavarājamimaṁ puṇyaṁ sandhyāṁ kṛtvā ca yaḥ paṭhet | pāṭhe caturṇāṁ vedānāṁ yatphalaṁ labhate ca tat

— beheld Savitri and obtained the boon his heart desired. Whoever, having performed the sandhya, recites this meritorious king of hymns, obtains the very fruit that comes from reciting all four Vedas.
