Chapter 44All chaptersChapter 46

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.9.45.1)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | uktaṁ svāhāsvadhākhyānaṁ praśastaṁ madhuraṁ param | vakṣyāmi dakṣiṇākhyānaṁ sāvadhāno niśāmaya

Shri Narayana said: The excellent and most sweet story of Svaha and Svadha has been told. Now I shall tell the story of Dakshina — listen attentively.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.45.2)

gopī suśīlā goloke purā''sītpreyasī hareḥ | rādhā pradhānā sadhrīcī dhanyā mānyā manoharā

Of old, in Goloka, there was a virtuous cowherd maiden, the beloved of Hari — Radha, foremost, ever near him, blessed, honored, enchanting,

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.45.3)

atīva sundarī rāmā subhagā sudatī satī | vidyāvatī guṇavatī cātirūpavatī satī

exceedingly beautiful, lovely, fortunate, of beautiful teeth, virtuous; learned, endowed with good qualities, and exceedingly beautiful, virtuous.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.45.4)

kalāvatī komalāṅgī kāntā kamalalocanā | suśroṇī sustanī śyāmā nyagrodhaparimaṇḍitā

Accomplished in the arts, of tender limbs, beloved, lotus-eyed; of beautiful hips, beautiful breasts, dark-complexioned, full and rounded like a banyan tree.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.45.5)

īṣaddhāsyaprasannāsyā ratnālaṅkārabhūṣitā | śvetacampakavarṇābhā bimboṣṭhī mṛgalocanā

Her face gently smiling and joyful, adorned with jeweled ornaments, radiant with the hue of the white champaka, her lips red as the bimba fruit, her eyes like a deer's.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.45.6)

kāmaśāstreṣu nipuṇā kāminī haṁsagāminī | bhāvānuraktā bhāvajñā kṛṣṇasya priyabhāminī

Skilled in the arts of love, alluring, moving with the gait of a swan; devoted in heart, understanding of feeling, the beloved radiant one of Krishna.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.45.7)

rasajñā rasikā rāse rāseśasya rasotsukā | uvāsādakṣiṇe kroḍe rādhāyāḥ purataḥ purā

Knowing of sentiment, delighting in the Rasa dance, eager for the delight of the Lord of the Rasa — of old, a certain gopi sat down upon his right lap, in front of Radha.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.45.8)

sambabhūvānamramukho bhayena madhusūdanaḥ | dṛṣṭvā rādhāṁ ca purato gopīnāṁ pravarottamām

Madhusudana's face turned down in fear, upon seeing Radha there before him — the very foremost and best of the cowherd maidens,

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.45.9)

kāminīṁ raktavadanāṁ raktapaṅkajalocanām | kopena kampitāṅgīṁ ca kopena sphuritādharām

— that alluring one, her face reddened, her eyes like red lotuses, her body trembling with anger, her lips quivering with anger.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.45.10)

vegena tāṁ tu gacchantīṁ vijñāya tadanantaram | virodhabhīto bhagavānantardhānaṁ cakāra saḥ

Perceiving her advancing swiftly, the Blessed Lord, immediately afterward, fearing the confrontation, made himself vanish.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.45.11)

palāyantaṁ ca kāntaṁ ca śāntaṁ sattvaṁ suvigraham | vilokya kampitā gopyaḥ suśīlādyāstato bhiyā

Seeing their beloved one fleeing — the peaceful being of beautiful form — the cowherd maidens, led by Sushila and the rest, trembled with fear.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.45.12)

vilokya lampaṭaṁ tatra gopīnāṁ lakṣakoṭayaḥ | puṭāñjaliyutā bhītā bhaktinamrātmakandharāḥ

Seeing that "amorous one" there, the many millions of gopis, terrified, their hands cupped in supplication, their necks bowed low in devotion,

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.45.13)

rakṣa rakṣetyuktavantyo devīmiti punaḥ punaḥ | yayurbhayena śaraṇaṁ yasyāścaraṇapaṅkaje

crying out again and again, "Protect us, protect us!" to the Devi, went out of fear for refuge at the feet of her whose lotus feet they sought.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.45.14)

trilakṣakoṭayo gopāḥ sudāmādaya eva ca | yayurbhayena śaraṇaṁ tatpādābje ca nārada

Three hundred million cowherds, headed by Sudama, likewise, O Narada, went out of fear for refuge at her lotus feet.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.45.15)

palāyantaṁ ca kāntaṁ ca vijñāya parameśvarī | palāyantīṁ sahacarīṁ suśīlāṁ ca śaśāpa sā

Knowing that her beloved had fled, the Supreme Goddess cursed her own fleeing companion, Sushila —

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.45.16)

adyaprabhṛti golokaṁ sā cedāyāti gopikā | sadyo gamanamātreṇa bhasmasācca bhaviṣyati

"From this day forward, if that gopi comes to Goloka, the very moment she arrives she shall be reduced to ashes."

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.45.17)

ityevamuktvā tatraiva devadeveśvarī ruṣā | rāseśvarī rāsamadhye rāseśamājuhāva ha

Having spoken thus, in fury, right there, the Goddess of Gods, the Mistress of the Rasa, called out for the Lord of the Rasa in the midst of the Rasa dance.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.9.45.18)

nālokya purataḥ kṛṣṇaṁ rādhā virahakātarā | yugakoṭisamaṁ mene kṣaṇabhedena suvratā

Not seeing Krishna before her, Radha, stricken with the pain of separation, that woman of pure vows, felt each fraction of a moment as long as a myriad ages.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.9.45.19)

he kṛṣṇa prāṇanātheśāgaccha prāṇādhikapriya | prāṇādhiṣṭhātṛdeveśa prāṇā yānti tvayā vinā

"O Krishna, lord and master of my life-breath, come! O you dearer to me than life itself; O lord of the deity presiding over life-breath — my very life is departing without you.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.9.45.20)

strīgarvaḥ patisaubhāgyādvardhate ca dine dine | sukhaṁ ca vipulaṁ yasmāttaṁ seveddharmataḥ sadā

"A woman's pride grows day by day through the good fortune of her husband; because vast happiness comes from him, one should serve him ever, as one's dharma.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.45.21)

patirbandhuḥ kulastrīṇāmadhidevaḥ sadāgatiḥ | parasampatsvarūpaśca mūrtimān bhogadaḥ sadā

"A husband is the kinsman, the very deity, the ever-present refuge of a woman of good family; the very embodiment of supreme prosperity, the eternal bestower of enjoyment.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.45.22)

dharmadaḥ sukhadaḥ śaśvatprītidaḥ śāntidaḥ sadā | sammānairdīpyamānaśca mānado mānakhaṇḍanaḥ

"He grants dharma, grants happiness, ever grants affection, ever grants peace; he shines through honors received, gives honor, and shatters honor when angered.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.45.23)

"A husband is the very essence beyond essence, increasing all one's kinsmen; among kinsmen and their own kin, no kinsman is ever found equal to a husband.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.9.45.24)

bharaṇādeva bhartā ca pālanātpatirucyate | śarīreśācca sa svāmī kāmadaḥ kānta ucyate

"He is called 'bharta' because he supports; he is called 'pati' because he protects; he is called 'svami' because he is lord of her body, and 'kanta', the fulfiller of desire.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.9.45.25)

bandhuśca sukhavṛddhyā ca prītidānātpriyaḥ smṛtaḥ | aiśvaryadānādīśaśca prāṇeśātprāṇanāyakaḥ

"He is 'bandhu' through the increase of happiness; he is remembered as 'priya' for giving affection; he is 'isha' for bestowing lordship, and 'pranesha', the very leader of life.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.9.45.26)

ratidānācca ramaṇaḥ priyo nāsti priyātparaḥ | putrastu svāminaḥ śukrājjāyate tena sa priyaḥ

"He is 'ramana' for bestowing delight; there is no beloved dearer than the beloved husband. A son is born of the husband's own seed, and for that too he is dear.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.9.45.27)

śataputrātparaḥ svāmī kulajānāṁ priyaḥ sadā | asatkulaprasūtā yā kāntaṁ vijñātumakṣamā

"A husband is dearer than a hundred sons, ever beloved by women of good family; only a woman born of low family is incapable of understanding her husband's worth.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.9.45.28)

snānaṁ ca sarvatīrtheṣu sarvayajñeṣu dakṣiṇā | prādakṣiṇyaṁ pṛthivyāśca sarvāṇi ca tapāṁsi ca

"Bathing at all sacred fords, the giving of dakshina in all sacrifices, circumambulation of the whole earth, and all austerities —

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.9.45.29)

sarvāṇyeva vratādīni mahādānāni yāni ca | upoṣaṇāni puṇyāni yāni yāni śrutāni ca

"— all vows and the like, whatever great gifts there are, whatever sacred fasts have been heard of —

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.9.45.30)

gurusevā viprasevā devasevādikaṁ ca yat | svāminaḥ pādasevāyāḥ kalāṁ nārhanti ṣoḍaśīm

"— service to the guru, service to Brahmins, service to the gods, and all such — none of these are worth even a sixteenth part of service to a husband's feet.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.9.45.31)

guruviprendradeveṣu sarvebhyaśca patirguruḥ | vidyādātā yathā puṁsāṁ kulajānāṁ tathā priyaḥ

"Among the guru, Brahmins, Indra, and the gods — the husband is the guru above all; as the giver of knowledge is dear to men, so is the husband dear to women of good family.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.9.45.32)

gopīnāṁ lakṣakoṭīnāṁ gopānāṁ ca tathaiva ca | brahmāṇḍānāmasaṅkhyānāṁ tatrasthānāṁ tathaiva ca

"Of the many millions of gopis, and likewise of the cowherds, and of the countless universes, and of all beings dwelling in them,

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.9.45.33)

viśvādigolakāntānāmīśvarī yatprasādataḥ | ahaṁ na jāne taṁ kāntaṁ strīsvabhāvo duratyayaḥ

"— from the beginning of the universe to the end of Goloka — I am their very mistress, by whose grace all this exists; and yet I do not understand that beloved one. A woman's nature is indeed hard to overcome!"

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.45.34)

ityuktvā rādhikā kṛṣṇaṁ tatra dadhyau svabhaktitaḥ | ruroda premṇā sā rādhā nātha nātheti cābravīt

Having said this, Radhika meditated there upon Krishna with her own devotion; that Radha wept out of love, and cried out, "My Lord! My Lord!"

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.9.45.35)

darśanaṁ dehi ramaṇa dīnā virahaduḥkhitā | atha sā dakṣiṇā devī dhvastā golokato mune

"Grant me your sight, O beloved! I am wretched, tormented by the pain of separation." Then, O sage, that Devi Dakshina, driven from Goloka,

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.9.45.36)

suciraṁ ca tapastaptvā viveśa kamalātanau | atha devādayaḥ sarve yajñaṁ kṛtvā suduṣkaram

performed austerity for a very long time and entered into the body of Kamala. Then all the gods, having performed a most difficult sacrifice,

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.45.37)

nālabhaṁste phalaṁ teṣāṁ viṣaṇṇāḥ prayayurvidhim | vidhirnivedanaṁ śrutvā devādīnāṁ jagatpatim

did not obtain its fruit; despondent, they went to the Creator. The Creator, hearing the petition of the gods, went to the Lord of the universe,

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.45.38)

dadhyau ca suciraṁ bhaktyā pratyādeśamavāpa saḥ | nārāyaṇaśca bhagavān mahālakṣyāśca dehataḥ

and meditated for a long time with devotion, and received his instruction in reply. The Blessed Narayana, from the very body of Mahalakshmi,

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.45.39)

viniṣkṛṣya martyalakṣmīṁ brahmaṇe dakṣiṇāṁ dadau | brahmā dadau tāṁ yajñāya pūraṇārthaṁ ca karmaṇām

drew forth the mortal Lakshmi and gave her to Brahma. Brahma gave her to Yajna, for the completion of ritual acts.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.45.40)

yajñaḥ sampūjya vidhivattāṁ tuṣṭāva tadā mudā | taptakāñcanavarṇābhāṁ candrakoṭisamaprabhām

Yajna, having duly worshipped her, then praised her with joy — her hue like heated gold, her radiance equal to ten million moons,

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.45.41)

atīva kamanīyāṁ ca sundarīṁ sumanoharām | kamalāsyāṁ komalāṅgīṁ kamalāyatalocanām

exceedingly enchanting, beautiful, most lovely, lotus-faced, of tender limbs, her eyes long like the lotus,

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.45.42)

kamalāsanapūjyāṁ ca kamalāṅgasamudbhavām | vahniśuddhāṁśukādhānāṁ bimboṣṭhīṁ sudatīṁ satīm

worshipped by the Lotus-seated one, born of the lotus-limbed one, clad in a garment purified by fire, her lips like the bimba fruit, of beautiful teeth, virtuous,

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.45.43)

bibhratīṁ kabarībhāraṁ mālatīmālyasaṁyutam | īṣaddhāsyaprasannāsyāṁ ratnabhūṣaṇabhūṣitām

bearing a mass of braided hair adorned with a garland of malati flowers, her face gently smiling and joyful, adorned with jeweled ornaments,

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.45.44)

suveṣāḍhyāṁ ca susnātāṁ munimānasamohinīm | kastūrībindubhiḥ sārdhaṁ sugandhicandanendubhiḥ

richly and beautifully attired, freshly bathed, enchanting the minds even of sages, together with drops of musk, marked with fragrant sandalwood and moon-like tilaka,

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.45.45)

sindūrabindunālpenāpyalakādhaḥsthalojjvalām | supraśastanitambāḍhyāṁ bṛhacchroṇipayodharām

her forehead below her curling locks made radiant even by a small dot of vermilion, richly endowed with beautiful hips, full-figured with ample loins and breasts,

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.45.46)

kāmadevādhārarūpāṁ kāmabāṇaprapīḍitām | tāṁ dṛṣṭvā ramaṇīyāṁ ca yajño mūrcchāmavāpa ha

of a form that is the very seat of the god of love, herself pierced by love's arrows — seeing that lovely one, Yajna fell into a swoon.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.45.47)

patnīṁ tāmeva jagrāha vidhibodhitapūrvakam | divyaṁ varṣaśataṁ caiva tāṁ gṛhītvā tu nirjane

He took her as his wife, having first been instructed by the Creator; and, having taken her, for a hundred divine years, in a secluded place,

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.45.48)

yajño reme mudā yukto rāmeśo ramayā saha | garbhaṁ dadhāra sā devī divyaṁ dvādaśavarṣakam

Yajna, filled with joy, sported together with his beloved, that lord of Rama, with Rama herself. That Devi bore the pregnancy for twelve divine years;

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.45.49)

tataḥ suṣāva putraṁ ca phalaṁ vai sarvakarmaṇām | paripūrṇe karmaṇi ca tatputraḥ phaladāyakaḥ

then she gave birth to a son — indeed the very Fruit of all rites; when a rite is completed, that son is the giver of its fruit.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.9.45.50)

yajño dakṣiṇayā sārdhaṁ putreṇa ca phalena ca | karmiṇāṁ phaladātā cetyevaṁ vedavido viduḥ

Thus Yajna, together with Dakshina, and with their son Phala, is the giver of fruit to those who perform rites — so the knowers of the Veda understand.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.45.51)

yajñaśca dakṣiṇāṁ prāpya putraṁ ca phaladāyakam | phalaṁ dadau ca sarvebhyaḥ karmaṇāṁ caiva nārada

And Yajna, having obtained Dakshina and their fruit-bestowing son, O Narada, gave the fruit of their rites to all.

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.9.45.52)

tadā devādayastuṣṭāḥ paripūrṇamanorathāḥ | svasthāne te yayuḥ sarve dharmavaktrādidaṁ śrutam

Then the gods and the rest, satisfied, their desires fully accomplished, all went to their own abodes. This has been heard from the mouth of Dharma himself:

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.9.45.53)

kṛtvā karma ca kartā ca tūrṇaṁ dadyācca dakṣiṇām | tatkṣaṇaṁ phalamāpnoti vedairuktamidaṁ mune

"Having performed a rite, the performer should promptly give the dakshina; he obtains its fruit at that very moment" — thus it is declared by the Vedas, O sage.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.9.45.54)

karmī karmaṇi pūrṇe ca tatkṣaṇe yadi dakṣiṇām | na dadyād brāhmaṇebhyaśca daivenājñānato'thavā

If the performer of a rite, when it is completed, does not at that very moment give the dakshina to the Brahmins — whether by fate or through ignorance —

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.9.45.55)

muhūrte samatīte tu dviguṇā sā bhaved dhruvam | ekarātre vyatīte tu bhavecchataguṇā ca sā

— then, when a muhurta has passed, it certainly becomes doubled; when a full night has passed, it becomes a hundredfold.

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.9.45.56)

trirātre tacchataguṇā saptāhe dviguṇā tataḥ | māse lakṣaguṇā proktā brāhmaṇānāṁ ca vardhate

After three nights, it becomes a hundred times that; after a week, doubled again; after a month, it is declared to become a hundred-thousandfold, ever increasing for the Brahmins.

Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.9.45.57)

saṁvatsare vyatīte tu sā trikoṭiguṇā bhavet | karma tadyajamānānāṁ sarvaṁ vai niṣphalaṁ bhavet

After a full year has passed, it becomes thirty million times that; and the whole rite of that sacrificer becomes entirely fruitless.

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.9.45.58)

He becomes a thief of a Brahmin's due, unfit for any rite, impure; poverty-stricken and afflicted with disease, a sinner through that very sin.

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.9.45.59)

tadgṛhādyāti lakṣmīśca śāpaṁ dattvā sudāruṇam | pitaro naiva gṛhṇanti taddattaṁ śrāddhatarpaṇam

Lakshmi departs from his house, having pronounced a most terrible curse; the ancestors do not accept the shraddha and tarpana offered by him.

Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.9.45.60)

evaṁ surāśca tatpūjāṁ taddattāmagnirāhutim | dattaṁ na dīyate dānaṁ grahītā naiva yācate

Likewise the gods do not accept his worship, and Fire does not accept the oblation he offers; his gift is not truly given, and its receiver does not truly ask for it.

Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.9.45.61)

ubhau tau narake yātaśchinnarajjau yathā ghaṭaḥ | nārpayedyajamānaścedyācitaścāpi dakṣiṇām

Both go to hell, like a pot falling whose rope is cut. If the sacrificer, even when asked, does not offer the dakshina —

Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.9.45.62)

bhavedbrahmasvāpahārī kumbhīpākaṁ vrajed dhruvam | varṣalakṣaṁ vasettatra yamadūtena tāḍitaḥ

— he becomes a thief of a Brahmin's due and certainly goes to the hell called Kumbhipaka; he dwells there for a hundred thousand years, beaten by the messengers of Yama.

Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.9.45.63)

tato bhavetsa cāṇḍālo vyādhiyukto daridrakaḥ | pātayetpuruṣānsapta pūrvāṁśca sapta janmataḥ

Thereafter he is born a chandala, afflicted with disease, poverty-stricken; and he drags down with him seven generations of his ancestors and seven of his descendants.

Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.9.45.64)

ityevaṁ kathitaṁ vipra kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi | nārada uvāca | yatkarma dakṣiṇāhīnaṁ ko bhuṅkte tatphalaṁ mune

Thus has this been told, O Brahmin; what more do you wish to hear? Narada said: "O sage, whoever performs a rite without dakshina — who then enjoys its fruit?

Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.9.45.65)

pūjāvidhiṁ dakṣiṇāyāḥ purā yajñakṛtaṁ vada | śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | karmaṇo'dakṣiṇasyaiva kuta eva phalaṁ mune

"And tell me the manner of worshipping Dakshina, as performed of old by Yajna." Shri Narayana said: "How indeed, O sage, can any fruit come at all from a rite performed without dakshina?

Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.9.45.66)

sadakṣiṇe karmaṇi ca phalameva pravartate | adakṣiṇaṁ ca yatkarma tadbhuṅkte ca balirmune

"Fruit accrues only from a rite performed with dakshina. Whatever rite is performed without dakshina, O sage, is enjoyed instead by Bali.

Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.9.45.67)

balaye tatpradattaṁ ca vāmanena purā mune | aśrotriyaḥ śrāddhadravyamaśraddhādānameva ca

"That was granted to Bali by Vamana himself, of old, O sage. Whatever shraddha-offering is given to a Brahmin unversed in the Veda, whatever gift given without faith,

Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.9.45.68)

vṛṣalīpativiprāṇāṁ pūjādravyādikaṁ ca yat | asaddvijaiḥ kṛtaṁ yajñamaśuceḥ pūjanaṁ ca yat

"whatever offering is made to Brahmins who are husbands of low-caste women, whatever sacrifice is performed by unworthy Brahmins, and whatever worship is offered by an impure person,

Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.9.45.69)

gurāvabhaktasya karma balirbhuṅkte na saṁśayaḥ | dakṣiṇāyāśca yaddhyānaṁ stotraṁ pūjāvidhikramam

"and whatever act is performed by one devoid of devotion to his guru — all these are enjoyed by Bali; of this there is no doubt. Now I shall relate the meditation, hymn, and manner of worship of Dakshina,

Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.9.45.70)

tatsarvaṁ kaṇvaśākhoktaṁ pravakṣyāmi niśāmaya | purā samprāpya tāṁ yajñaḥ karmadakṣāṁ ca dakṣiṇām

"— all as taught in the Kanva branch of the Veda — listen. Of old, having obtained her, Dakshina, so skillful in ritual acts, Yajna,

Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.9.45.71)

mumohāsyāḥ svarūpeṇa tuṣṭāva kāmakātaraḥ | yajña uvāca | purā golokagopī tvaṁ gopīnāṁ pravarā varā

"was enchanted by her very form and, overwhelmed with desire, praised her. Yajna said: 'Of old you were a gopi of Goloka, the foremost and finest of the gopis,

Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.9.45.72)

rādhāsamā tatsakhī ca śrīkṛṣṇapreyasī priyā | kārtikīpūrṇimāyāṁ tu rāse rādhāmahotsave

" '— equal to Radha, her own companion, the beloved darling of Shri Krishna. On the full-moon day of Kartika, at the Rasa dance, at the great festival of Radha,

Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.9.45.73)

āvirbhūtā dakṣiṇāṁsāllakṣmyāśca tena dakṣiṇā | purā tvaṁ ca suśīlākhyā khyātā śīlena śobhane

" '— you appeared from the right shoulder of Lakshmi, and for that you are called Dakshina. Of old you were known by the name Sushila, renowned for your fine character, O radiant one.'

Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.9.45.74)

lakṣmīdakṣāṁsabhāgāttvaṁ rādhāśāpācca dakṣiṇā | golokāttvaṁ paribhraṣṭā mama bhāgyādupasthitā

" '[Now,] from the right portion of Lakshmi's shoulder, and through Radha's curse, you have become Dakshina; fallen from Goloka, you have come to me by my own good fortune.'

Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.9.45.75)

kṛpāṁ kuru mahābhāge māmeva svāminaṁ kuru | karmiṇāṁ karmaṇāṁ devī tvameva phaladā sadā

" 'Show me grace, O most fortunate one; make me your lord. You alone, O Devi, are ever the giver of fruit to the rites of those who perform ritual acts.'

Verse 76 (devibhagavatam.9.45.76)

tvayā vinā ca sarveṣāṁ sarvaṁ karma ca niṣphalam | tvayā vinā tathā karma karmiṇāṁ ca na śobhate

" 'Without you, all rites of all beings are fruitless; without you, likewise, the deeds of ritual performers bring no glory.'

Verse 77 (devibhagavatam.9.45.77)

brahmaviṣṇumaheśāśca dikpālādaya eva ca | karmaṇaśca phalaṁ dātuṁ na śaktāśca tvayā vinā

" 'Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesha, and the guardians of the directions and the rest — without you, none of them are able to bestow the fruit of any rite.'

Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.9.45.78)

karmarūpī svayaṁ brahmā phalarūpī maheśvaraḥ | yajñarūpī viṣṇurahaṁ tvameṣāṁ sārarūpiṇī

" 'Brahma himself is of the very form of the rite; Maheshvara is of the very form of the fruit; I, Vishnu, am of the very form of the sacrifice; and you are the very essence of them all.'

Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.9.45.79)

phaladātṛparaṁ brahma nirguṇā prakṛtiḥ parā | svayaṁ kṛṣṇaśca bhagavān sa ca śaktastvayā saha

" 'The supreme Brahman, the giver of fruit, the supreme Prakriti beyond qualities, the Blessed Krishna himself — he too is capable only together with you.'

Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.9.45.80)

tvameva śaktiḥ kānte me śaśvajjanmani janmani | sarvakarmaṇi śakto'haṁ tvayā saha varānane

" 'You alone are my power, O beloved, forever, birth after birth; only together with you, O fair-faced one, am I capable in every act.' "

Verse 81 (devibhagavatam.9.45.81)

ityuktvā ca purastasthau yajñādhiṣṭhātṛdevatā | tuṣṭā babhūva sā devī bheje taṁ kamalākalā

Having spoken thus, the presiding deity of the sacrifice stood before her; that Devi, pleased, gave herself, a portion of Kamala, to him.

Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.9.45.82)

idaṁ ca dakṣiṇāstotraṁ yajñakāle ca yaḥ paṭhet | phalaṁ ca sarvayajñānāṁ prāpnoti nātra saṁśayaḥ

Whoever recites this hymn of Dakshina at the time of a sacrifice certainly obtains the fruit of all sacrifices; of this there is no doubt —

Verse 83 (devibhagavatam.9.45.83)

rājasūye vājapeye gomedhe naramedhake | aśvamedhe lāṅgale ca viṣṇuyajñe yaśaskare

— in the Rajasuya, the Vajapeya, the Gomedha, the Naramedha, the Ashvamedha, the Langala rite, and the fame-bringing sacrifice to Vishnu;

Verse 84 (devibhagavatam.9.45.84)

dhanade bhūmide pūrte phalade gajamedhake | lohayajñe svarṇayajñe ratnayajñe'tha tāmrake

in the wealth-bestowing, land-bestowing, and public-works sacrifices, in the fruit-bestowing sacrifice, in the Gajamedha, in the sacrifice of iron, of gold, of gems, and of copper;

Verse 85 (devibhagavatam.9.45.85)

śivayajñe rudrayajñe śakrayajñe ca bandhuke | vṛṣṭau varuṇayāge ca kaṇḍake vairimardane

in the sacrifice to Shiva, to Rudra, to Indra, and the kinsman-rite; in the rain-rite, in the sacrifice to Varuna, in the Kandaka rite, in the enemy-destroying rite;

Verse 86 (devibhagavatam.9.45.86)

śuciyajñe dharmayajñe'dhvare ca pāpamocane | brahmāṇīkarmayāge ca yoniyāge ca bhadrake

in the sacrifice of purity, the sacrifice of dharma, the sin-releasing rite, in the Brahmani ritual-sacrifice, and in the auspicious Yoni sacrifice —

Verse 87 (devibhagavatam.9.45.87)

eteṣāṁ ca samārambhe idaṁ stotraṁ ca yaḥ paṭhet | nirvighnena ca tatkarma sarvaṁ bhavati niścitam

— at the commencement of all these, whoever recites this hymn, his rite is certainly accomplished entirely without obstruction.

Verse 88 (devibhagavatam.9.45.88)

idaṁ stotraṁ ca kathitaṁ dhyānaṁ pūjāvidhiṁ śṛṇu | śālagrāme ghaṭe vāpi dakṣiṇāṁ pūjayetsudhīḥ

This hymn has now been told; hear now the meditation and manner of worship. On a shalagrama or in a water-pot, the wise man should worship Dakshina —

Verse 89 (devibhagavatam.9.45.89)

lakṣmīdakṣāṁsasambhūtāṁ dakṣiṇāṁ kamalākalām | sarvakarmasudakṣāṁ ca phaladāṁ sarvakarmaṇām

— meditating on her as born of Lakshmi's right shoulder, Dakshina, a portion of Kamala, most skillful in every rite, the giver of fruit to every ritual act,

Verse 90 (devibhagavatam.9.45.90)

viṣṇoḥ śaktisvarūpāṁ ca pūjitāṁ vanditāṁ śubhām | śuddhidāṁ śuddhirūpāṁ ca suśīlāṁ śubhadāṁ bhaje

of the very nature of Vishnu's power, worshipped and revered, auspicious — I worship her who is purifying, of pure nature, of fine character, bestower of good fortune.

Verse 91 (devibhagavatam.9.45.91)

dhyātvānenaiva varadāṁ mūlena pūjayetsudhīḥ | dattvā pādyādikaṁ devyai vedoktenaiva nārada

Meditating thus on the boon-giver, the wise man should worship her with the root-mantra, offering to the Devi the water for her feet and the rest, exactly as taught in the Veda, O Narada:

Verse 92 (devibhagavatam.9.45.92)

oṁ śrīṁ klīṁ hrīṁ dakṣiṇāyai svāheti ca vicakṣaṇaḥ | pūjayedvidhivad bhaktyā dakṣiṇāṁ sarvapūjitām

"Oṁ śrīṁ klīṁ hrīṁ dakṣiṇāyai svāhā" — with this, the wise man should worship, duly and with devotion, Dakshina, honored by all.

Verse 93 (devibhagavatam.9.45.93)

ityevaṁ kathitaṁ brahman dakṣiṇākhyānameva ca | sukhadaṁ prītidaṁ caiva phaladaṁ sarvakarmaṇām

Thus, O Brahmin, has the story of Dakshina been told, bringing happiness and affection, granting the fruit of all rites.

Verse 94 (devibhagavatam.9.45.94)

idaṁ ca dakṣiṇākhyānaṁ yaḥ śṛṇoti samāhitaḥ | aṅgahīnaṁ ca tatkarma na bhavedbhārate bhuvi

Whoever, with a composed mind, listens to this story of Dakshina — in the land of Bharata, none of his rites shall ever be deficient in any part.

Verse 95 (devibhagavatam.9.45.95)

aputro labhate putraṁ niścitaṁ ca guṇānvitam | bhāryāhīno labhedbhāryāṁ suśīlāṁ sundarīṁ parām

He who has no son certainly obtains a virtuous son; he who has no wife obtains a wife of fine character, most beautiful,

Verse 96 (devibhagavatam.9.45.96)

varārohāṁ putravatīṁ vinītāṁ priyavādinīm | pativratāṁ ca śuddhāṁ ca kulajāṁ ca vadhūṁ varām

of excellent form, blessed with sons, modest, sweet of speech, devoted to her husband, pure, born of a good family — an excellent bride.

Verse 97 (devibhagavatam.9.45.97)

vidyāhīno labhedvidyāṁ dhanahīno labheddhanam | bhūmihīno labhedbhūmiṁ prajāhīno labhetprajām

He who lacks learning obtains learning; he who lacks wealth obtains wealth; he who lacks land obtains land; he who lacks offspring obtains offspring.

Verse 98 (devibhagavatam.9.45.98)

saṅkaṭe bandhuvicchede vipattau bandhane tathā | māsamekamidaṁ śrutvā mucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ

In distress, in separation from kinsmen, in calamity, and likewise in captivity — having listened to this for one month, he is certainly freed; of this there is no doubt.
