The Rite of the Devi's Enclosure-Worship

Chapter 49All chapters

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.9.50.1)

nārada uvāca | śrutaṁ sarvamupākhyānaṁ prakṛtīnāṁ yathātatham | yacchrutvā mucyate janturjanmasaṁsārabandhanāt

Narada said: I have heard the whole account of the Prakritis exactly as it is — hearing which, a creature is freed from the bondage of birth and worldly existence.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.50.2)

adhunā śrotumicchāmi rahasyaṁ vedagopitam | rādhāyāścaiva durgāyā vidhānaṁ śruticoditam

Now I wish to hear the secret hidden within the Veda — the manner of worship, enjoined by revelation, of Radha and of Durga.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.50.3)

mahimā varṇito'tīva bhavatā parayordvayoḥ | śrutvā taṁ tadgataṁ ceto na kasya syānmunīśvara

You have described at great length the glory of these two supreme ones; O lord of sages, having heard it, whose mind would not be drawn toward them?

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.50.4)

yayoraṁśo jagatsarvaṁ yanniyamyaṁ carācaram | yayorbhaktyā bhavenmuktistadvidhānaṁ vadādhunā

Of whom the whole world, moving and unmoving, subject to their rule, is a mere portion — by devotion to whom liberation comes — tell me now their manner of worship.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.50.5)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | śṛṇu nārada vakṣyāmi rahasyaṁ śruticoditam | yanna kasyāpi cākhyātaṁ sārātsāraṁ parātparam

Shri Narayana said: Listen, Narada, I shall tell you the secret enjoined by revelation, which has not been told to anyone — the very essence of essences, supreme beyond the supreme.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.50.6)

śrutvā parasmai no vācyaṁ yato'tīva rahasyakam | mūlaprakṛtirūpiṇyāḥ saṁvido jagadudbhave

Having heard it, it should not be told to another, for it is exceedingly secret. Of her who is of the very form of the root Prakriti, of pure Consciousness, at the arising of the world —

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.50.7)

prādurbhūtaṁ śaktiyugmaṁ prāṇabuddhyadhidaivatam | jīvānāṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ niyantṛprerakaṁ sadā

— a pair of powers came forth, the presiding deities of life-breath and intellect, ever the controllers and impellers of all living beings.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.50.8)

tadadhīnaṁ jagatsarvaṁ virāḍādicarācaram | yāvattayoḥ prasādo na tāvanmokṣo hi durlabhaḥ

The whole world, from the Cosmic Person down, moving and unmoving, is dependent upon them; as long as their grace has not come, liberation is indeed hard to attain.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.50.9)

tatastayoḥ prasādārthaṁ nityaṁ seveta taddvayam | tatrādau rādhikāmantraṁ śṛṇu nārada bhaktitaḥ

Therefore, for the sake of their grace, one should ever serve that pair. Of these, first, O Narada, hear with devotion the mantra of Radhika.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.50.10)

brahmaviṣṇvādibhirnityaṁ sevito yaḥ parātparaḥ | śrīrādheti caturthyantaṁ vahnerjāyā tataḥ param

He who is ever served by Brahma, Vishnu, and the rest, supreme beyond the supreme — "Śrī Rādhā" in the dative case, followed then by "the wife of Fire" [i.e. svāhā] —

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.50.11)

ṣaḍakṣaro mahāmantro dharmādyarthaprakāśakaḥ | māyābījādikaścāyaṁ vāñchācintāmaṇiḥ smṛtaḥ

"— this is the six-syllabled great mantra, which reveals the meaning of dharma and the rest; beginning with the seed-syllable of Maya, it is remembered as the very wish-fulfilling gem.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.50.12)

vaktrakoṭisahasraistu jihvākoṭiśatairapi | etanmantrasya māhātmyaṁ varṇituṁ naiva śakyate

Even with ten trillion mouths and a billion tongues, the glory of this mantra cannot ever be fully described.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.50.13)

jagrāha prathamaṁ mantraṁ śrīkṛṣṇo bhaktitatparaḥ | upadeśānmūladevyā goloke rāsamaṇḍale

Shri Krishna himself, devoted to devotion, first received this mantra, taught by the root Devi herself, in the Rasa circle of Goloka.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.50.14)

viṣṇustenopadiṣṭastu tena brahmā virāṭ tathā | tena dharmastena cāhamityeṣā hi paramparā

By him it was taught to Vishnu; by him to Brahma, and to the Cosmic Person likewise; by him to Dharma, and by him to me — this indeed is its lineage of transmission.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.50.15)

ahaṁ japāmi taṁ mantraṁ tenāhamṛṣirīḍitaḥ | brahmādyāḥ sakalā devā nityaṁ dhyāyanti tāṁ mudā

I myself recite this mantra, and for that I am celebrated as its sage. Brahma and all the gods meditate upon her ever, with joy.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.50.16)

kṛṣṇārcāyāṁ nādhikāro yato rādhārcanaṁ vinā | vaiṣṇavaiḥ sakalaistasmātkartavyaṁ rādhikārcanam

There is no true right to worship Krishna without worshipping Radha; therefore all Vaishnavas must perform the worship of Radhika.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.50.17)

kṛṣṇaprāṇādhidevī sā tadadhīno vibhuryataḥ | rāseśvarī tasya nityaṁ tayā hīno na tiṣṭhati

She is the presiding deity of Krishna's very life-breath, since the Lord is dependent upon her; she is ever the Mistress of the Rasa, and he does not remain without her.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.9.50.18)

rādhnoti sakalānkāmāṁstasmādrādheti kīrtitā | atroktānāṁ manūnāṁ ca ṛṣirasmyahameva ca

She fulfills every desire, and for that she is celebrated as "Radha." Of the mantras spoken of here, I myself am the sage,

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.9.50.19)

chandaśca devī gāyatrī devatātra ca rādhikā | tāro bījaṁ śaktibījaṁ śaktistu parikīrtitā

the meter is the goddess Gayatri, and the deity here is Radhika; the syllable "Om" is the seed-syllable, and the power-seed is proclaimed as the power of the mantra.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.9.50.20)

mūlāvṛttyā ṣaḍaṅgāni kartavyānītaratra ca | atha dhyāyenmahādevīṁ rādhikāṁ rāsanāyikām

The six limbs of the ritual should be performed by repeating the root-mantra, as elsewhere. Then one should meditate upon the great Devi, Radhika, the Mistress of the Rasa dance,

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.50.21)

pūrvoktarītyā tu mune sāmavede vigītayā | śvetacampakavarṇābhāṁ śaradindusamānanām

in the manner described before, O sage, as sung in the Samaveda — radiant with the hue of the white champaka, her face like the autumn moon,

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.50.22)

koṭicandrapratīkāśāṁ śaradambhojalocanām | bimbādharāṁ pṛthuśroṇīṁ kāñcīyutanitambinīm

resembling ten million moons, her eyes like an autumn lotus, her lips like the bimba fruit, her hips broad, her waist girded with a jeweled belt,

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.50.23)

kundapaṅktisamānābhadantapaṅktivirājitām | kṣaumāmbaraparīdhānāṁ vahniśuddhāṁśukānvitām

her rows of teeth resplendent, like a row of jasmine buds, clad in silken garments, wearing a garment purified by fire,

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.9.50.24)

īṣaddhāsyaprasannāsyāṁ karikumbhayugastanīm | sadā dvādaśavarṣīyāṁ ratnabhūṣaṇabhūṣitām

her face gently smiling and joyful, her two breasts like the frontal lobes of an elephant, ever as if twelve years of age, adorned with jeweled ornaments,

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.9.50.25)

śṛṅgārasindhulaharīṁ bhaktānugrahakātarām | mallikāmālatīmālākeśapāśavirājitām

a very wave of the ocean of love, eager to bestow grace on her devotees, her tresses resplendent with garlands of jasmine and malati flowers,

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.9.50.26)

sukumārāṅgalatikāṁ rāsamaṇḍalamadhyagām | varābhayakarāṁ śāntāṁ śaśvatsusthirayauvanām

her delicate limbs like a tender vine, standing in the midst of the Rasa circle, her hands in the gestures of boon-giving and fearlessness, peaceful, ever fixed in unfading youth,

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.9.50.27)

ratnasiṁhāsanāsīnāṁ gopīmaṇḍalanāyikām | kṛṣṇaprāṇādhikāṁ vedabodhitāṁ parameśvarīm

seated upon a jeweled throne, the leader of the circle of gopis, dearer than life itself to Krishna, the Supreme Goddess made known by the Veda.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.9.50.28)

evaṁ dhyātvā tato bāhye śālagrāme ghaṭe'thavā | yantre vāṣṭadale devīṁ pūjayettu vidhānataḥ

Having meditated thus, one should then, outwardly, worship the Devi according to rule — on a shalagrama, or in a water-pot, or on a yantra, or on an eight-petaled diagram.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.9.50.29)

āvāhya devīṁ tatpaścādāsanādi pradīyatām | mūlamantraṁ samuccārya cāsanādīni kalpayet

Having invoked the Devi, one should thereafter offer the seat and other things; reciting the root-mantra, one should present the seat and the rest.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.9.50.30)

pādyaṁ tu pādayordadyānmastake'rghyaṁ samīritam | mukhe tvācamanīyaṁ syāttrivāraṁ mūlavidyayā

One should offer the water for the feet upon her feet; the arghya is prescribed for her head; and the sipping-water should be offered to her mouth, three times, with the root-mantra.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.9.50.31)

madhuparkaṁ tato dadyādekāṁ gāṁ ca payasvinīm | tato nayetsnānaśālāṁ tāṁ ca tatraiva bhāvayet

Then one should offer the honey-mixture and a single milk-giving cow; then he should lead her to the bathing-hall, and meditate upon her right there.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.9.50.32)

abhyaṅgādisnānavidhiṁ kalpayitvātha vāsasī | tataśca candanaṁ dadyānnānālaṅkārapūrvakam

Having performed the anointing and the rest of the bathing rite, one should then offer two garments; and thereafter offer sandalwood, together with various ornaments.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.9.50.33)

puṣpamālā bahuvidhāstulasīmañjarīyutāḥ | pārijātaprasūnāni śatapatrādikāni ca

Various kinds of flower-garlands, mixed with tulasi buds, blossoms of the parijata tree, and hundred-petaled lotuses and the like should be offered.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.50.34)

tataḥ kuryātpavitraṁ tatparivārārcanaṁ vibhoḥ | agnīśāsuravāyavyamadhye dikṣvaṅgapūjanam

Then one should perform the sacred worship of the Lord's retinue — in the intermediate directions of Fire, Ishana, Nirriti, and Vayu, the worship of her attendant limbs.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.9.50.35)

kṛtvā paścādaṣṭadale dakṣiṇāvartato'grataḥ | mālāvatīmagradale vahnikoṇe ca mādhavīm

Having done this, then, on the eight-petaled diagram, moving clockwise from the front — on the front petal, one worships Malavati; in the Fire corner, Madhavi;

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.9.50.36)

ratnamālāṁ dakṣiṇe ca nairṛtye tu suśīlakām | paścāddale śaśikalāṁ pūjayenmatimānnaraḥ

in the south, Ratnamala; in the Nirriti corner, Sushilaka; on the western petal, the wise man should worship Shashikala;

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.50.37)

mārute pārijātāṁ cāpyuttare ca parāvatīm | īśānakoṇe sampūjyā sundarī priyakāriṇī

in the Vayu corner, Parijata; and in the north, Paravati; in the Ishana corner, one should worship Sundari, the bestower of favor.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.50.38)

brāhmyādayastu tadbāhye'pyāśāpālāṁstu bhūpure | vajrādikānyāyudhāni devīmitthaṁ prapūjayet

Beyond that, outside, Brahmi and the other Mother-goddesses; the guardians of the directions in the earth-enclosure, with their weapons — the thunderbolt and the rest — thus should the Devi be worshipped completely.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.50.39)

tato devīṁ sāvaraṇāṁ gandhādyairupacārakaiḥ | rājopacārasahitaiḥ pūjayenmatimānnaraḥ

Then the wise man should worship the Devi, together with her full retinue, with fragrance and the other ritual attentions, together with the royal offerings.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.50.40)

tataḥ stuvīta deveśīṁ stotrairnāmasahasrakaiḥ | sahasrasaṅkhyaṁ ca japaṁ nityaṁ kuryātprayatnataḥ

Then one should praise the Queen of the gods with hymns and with her thousand names; and one should always, with effort, recite her mantra a thousand times.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.50.41)

ya evaṁ pūjayeddevīṁ rādhāṁ rāseśvarīṁ parām | sa bhavedviṣṇutulyastu golokaṁ yāti santatam

Whoever worships the Devi Radha, the supreme Mistress of the Rasa, in this way, becomes equal to Vishnu, and goes at last to Goloka.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.50.42)

yaḥ kārtikyāṁ paurṇamāsyāṁ rādhājanmotsava budhaḥ | kurute tasya sānnidhyaṁ dadyādrāseśvarī parā

Whatever wise man performs the birthday festival of Radha on the full moon of Kartika — to him the supreme Mistress of the Rasa grants her very presence.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.50.43)

kenacitkāraṇenaiva rādhā vṛndāvane vane | vṛṣabhānusutā jātā golokasthāyinī sadā

For a certain reason, Radha, though ever residing in Goloka, was born as the daughter of Vrishabhanu in the forest of Vrindavana.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.50.44)

atroktānāṁ tu mantrāṇāṁ varṇasaṅkhyāvidhānataḥ | puraścaraṇakarmoktaṁ daśāṁśaṁ homamācaret

As prescribed for the mantras spoken of here, according to the number of their syllables, the preliminary-rite has been enjoined; one should perform a fire-offering equal to one-tenth of the number of recitations.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.50.45)

tilaistrisvādusaṁyuktairjuhuyādbhaktibhāvataḥ | nārada uvāca | stotraṁ vada mune samyagyena devī prasīdati

One should offer sesame seeds mixed with the three sweet substances, with devotion. Narada said: "Tell me fully, O sage, the hymn by which the Devi becomes pleased."

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.50.46)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | namaste parameśāni rāsamaṇḍalavāsini | rāseśvari namaste'stu kṛṣṇaprāṇādhikapriye

Shri Narayana said: "Salutation to you, O supreme Queen, dweller in the Rasa circle. Salutation to you, O Mistress of the Rasa, dearer to Krishna than his own life-breath.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.50.47)

namastrailokyajanani prasīda karuṇārṇave | brahmaviṣṇvādibhirdevairvandyamānapadāmbuje

"Salutation, O Mother of the three worlds; be gracious, O ocean of compassion; whose lotus feet are worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu, and the other gods.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.50.48)

namaḥ sarasvatīrūpe namaḥ sāvitri śaṅkari | gaṅgāpadmāvatīrūpe ṣaṣṭhi maṅgalacaṇḍike

"Salutation to you in the form of Sarasvati; salutation, O Savitri, O Shankari; O you of the form of Ganga, of Padmavati, O Shashthi, O Mangalachandika,

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.50.49)

namaste tulasīrūpe namo lakṣmīsvarūpiṇi | namo durge bhagavati namaste sarvarūpiṇi

"salutation to you in the form of Tulasi; salutation to you, of the very nature of Lakshmi; salutation to Durga, the Blessed One; salutation to you, who takes every form.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.9.50.50)

mūlaprakṛtirūpāṁ tvāṁ bhajāmaḥ karuṇārṇavām | saṁsārasāgarādasmānuddharāmba dayāṁ kuru

"We worship you, of the form of the root Prakriti, ocean of compassion; deliver us, O Mother, from the ocean of worldly existence — show mercy."

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.50.51)

idaṁ stotraṁ trisandhyaṁ yaḥ paṭhedrādhāṁ smarannaraḥ | na tasya durlabhaṁ kiñcitkadācicca bhaviṣyati

Whatever man recites this hymn at the three junctures of the day, remembering Radha, nothing shall ever be unattainable for him.

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.9.50.52)

dehānte ca vasennityaṁ goloke rāsamaṇḍale | idaṁ rahasyaṁ paramaṁ na cākhyeyaṁ tu kasyacit

At the end of the body, he shall dwell forever in the Rasa circle of Goloka. This is the supreme secret; it should not be told to just anyone.

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.9.50.53)

adhunā śṛṇu viprendra durgādevyā vidhānakam | yasyāḥ smaraṇamātreṇa palāyante mahāpadaḥ

Now hear, O foremost of Brahmins, the manner of worship of the Devi Durga — by the mere remembrance of whom great calamities flee away.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.9.50.54)

enāṁ na bhajate yo hi tādṛṅnāstyeva kutracit | sarvopāsyā sarvamātā śaivī śaktirmahādbhutā

There is truly no one anywhere who does not worship her. Worshipped by all, the mother of all, the power of Shiva, most wondrous —

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.9.50.55)

sarvabuddhyādhidevīyamantaryāmisvarūpiṇī | durgasaṅkaṭahantrīti durgeti prathitā bhuvi

she is the presiding deity of all intellect, of the very nature of the Inner Controller; because she destroys difficult calamities, she is renowned on earth as "Durga."

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.9.50.56)

vaiṣṇavānāṁ ca śaivānāmupāsyeyaṁ ca nityaśaḥ | mūlaprakṛtirūpā sā sṛṣṭisthityantakāriṇī

She is ever worshipped by Vaishnavas and Shaivas alike; she is of the very form of the root Prakriti, the maker of creation, preservation, and dissolution.

tasyā navākṣaraṁ mantraṁ vakṣye mantrottamottamam | vāgbhavaṁ śambhuvanitā kāmabījaṁ tataḥ param

I shall now tell you her nine-syllabled mantra, the very best among mantras: the seed-syllable born of speech, then Shambhu's wife's seed-syllable, then the seed-syllable of desire,

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.9.50.58)

tataḥ saptaśatīstotraṁ devyā agre tu sampaṭhet | nānena sadṛśaṁ stotraṁ vidyate bhuvanatraye

Then one should recite the Saptashati hymn fully, in the presence of the Devi; there exists no hymn equal to this in the three worlds.

Verse 87 (devibhagavatam.9.50.87)

tataścānena deveśīṁ toṣayet pratyahaṁ naraḥ | dharmārthakāmamokṣāṇāmālayaṁ jāyate naraḥ

lakṣmyādayastathā devyaḥ sarve dhyāyanti tāṁ śivām | tadaiva janmasāphalyaṁ durgāsmaraṇamasti cet

aputro labhate putraṁ vidyārthī prāpnuyācca tām | yaṁ yaṁ kāmaṁ smaredvāpi taṁ taṁ śrutvā samāpnuyāt

Verse 97 (devibhagavatam.9.50.97)

śakunāṁśca parīkṣeta nityamasminyathāvidhi | kumārīdivyahastena yadvā baṭukarāmbujāt

He should regularly examine omens in this rite, according to the proper procedure — through the divine hand of a young maiden, or from the lotus hand of a young boy.
