The Vow of Offering Arghya to Agastya

Verse 1 (garuda.1.119.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । अगस्त्यार्घ्यव्रतं वक्ष्ये भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदायकम् । अप्राप्ते भास्करे कन्यां सति भागे त्रिभिर्दिनैः

brahmovāca agastyārghyavrataṁ vakṣye bhuktimuktipradāyakam aprāpte bhāskare kanyāṁ sati bhāge tribhirdinaiḥ

Brahma said: I shall declare the vow of offering arghya to Agastya, which grants both enjoyment and liberation. Before the sun enters the sign of Kanya, when the time draws near, within three days —

Verse 2 (garuda.1.119.2)

अर्घ्यं दद्यादगस्त्याय मूर्तिं संपूज्य वै मुने ! । काशपुष्पमयीं कुम्भे प्रदोषे कृतजागरः

arghyaṁ dadyādagastyāya mūrtiṁ saṁpūjya vai mune ! kāśapuṣpamayīṁ kumbhe pradoṣe kṛtajāgaraḥ

one should offer arghya to Agastya, O sage, having duly worshipped his image made of kasha-flowers, placed in a pot, at dusk, keeping vigil.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.119.3)

दध्यक्षताद्यैः संपूज्य उपोष्य फलपुष्पकैः । पञ्चवर्णसमायुक्तं हेमरौप्यसमन्वितम्

dadhyakṣatādyaiḥ saṁpūjya upoṣya phalapuṣpakaiḥ pañcavarṇasamāyuktaṁ hemaraupyasamanvitam

Having worshipped with curd, unbroken rice and the like, having fasted, with fruits and flowers; adorned with five colors, together with gold and silver —

Verse 4 (garuda.1.119.4)

सप्तधान्ययुतं पात्रं दधिचन्दनचर्चितम् । अगस्त्यः खनमानेति मन्त्रेणार्घ्यं प्रदापयेत्

saptadhānyayutaṁ pātraṁ dadhicandanacarcitam agastyaḥ khanamāneti mantreṇārghyaṁ pradāpayet

a vessel filled with the seven grains, smeared with curd and sandalwood — with the mantra beginning 'agastyaḥ khanamāna,' one should offer the arghya.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.119.5)

खासपुष्पप्रतीकाश अग्निमारुतसम्भव ! । मित्रावारुणयोः पुत्त्रो कुम्भयोने नमोऽस्तु ते

khāsapuṣpapratīkāśa agnimārutasambhava ! mitrāvāruṇayoḥ puttro kumbhayone namo'stu te

'O you who resemble kasha-flowers in form, born of fire and wind! O son of Mitra and Varuna, O pot-born one, salutation to you!'

Verse 6 (garuda.1.119.6)

शूद्रस्त्र्यादिरनेनैव त्यजेद्धान्यं फलं रसम् । दद्याद्द्विजातये कुम्भं सहिरण्यं सदक्षिणम् । भोजयेच्च द्विजान्सप्त वर्षं कृत्वा तु सर्वभाक्

śūdrastryādiranenaiva tyajeddhānyaṁ phalaṁ rasam dadyāddvijātaye kumbhaṁ sahiraṇyaṁ sadakṣiṇam bhojayecca dvijānsapta varṣaṁ kṛtvā tu sarvabhāk

By this same vow, a shudra, a woman, and others should give up grain, fruit, and juice. One should give the pot, together with gold and a sacrificial fee, to a twice-born, and feed seven brahmins. Having performed this for a year, one partakes of everything.
