The Vishnu-Mandala Worship Rite
Verse 1 (garuda.1.126.1)
ब्रह्मोवाच । येनार्चनेन वै लोको जगाम परमां गतिम् । तमर्चनं प्रवक्ष्यामि भुक्तिमुक्तिकरं परम्
brahmovāca yenārcanena vai loko jagāma paramāṁ gatim tamarcanaṁ pravakṣyāmi bhuktimuktikaraṁ param
Brahma said: I shall declare that mode of worship by which the world attained the supreme goal — the most excellent worship that bestows both enjoyment and liberation.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.126.2)
सामान्यमण्डलं न्यस्य धातारं द्वारदेशतः । विधातारं तथा गङ्गां यमुनां च महानदीम्
sāmānyamaṇḍalaṁ nyasya dhātāraṁ dvāradeśataḥ vidhātāraṁ tathā gaṅgāṁ yamunāṁ ca mahānadīm
Having laid out the general ritual diagram, one should place Dhatri at the doorway, and likewise Vidhatri, the Ganga, and the great river Yamuna.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.126.3)
द्वारश्रियं च दण्डं च प्रचण्डं वास्तुपूरुषम् । मध्ये चाधारशक्तिं च कूर्मं चानन्तमर्चयेत्
dvāraśriyaṁ ca daṇḍaṁ ca pracaṇḍaṁ vāstupūruṣam madhye cādhāraśaktiṁ ca kūrmaṁ cānantamarcayet
At the door one should worship Dvarashri and Danda, and the fierce Vastupurusha; in the center, the supporting Shakti, the Tortoise, and Ananta.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.126.4)
भूमिं धर्मं तथा ज्ञानं वैरग्यैश्वर्यमेव च । अधर्मादींश्च चतुरः कन्दं नालं च पङ्कजम्
bhūmiṁ dharmaṁ tathā jñānaṁ vairagyaiśvaryameva ca adharmādīṁśca caturaḥ kandaṁ nālaṁ ca paṅkajam
One should worship the Earth, Dharma, Jnana, Vairagya and Aishvarya, the four beginning with Adharma, and the lotus's stalk and stem.
Verse 5 (garuda.1.126.5)
कर्णिकां केसरं सत्त्वं राजसं तामसं गुणम् । सुर्यादिमण्डलान्येव विमलाद्याश्च शक्तयः
karṇikāṁ kesaraṁ sattvaṁ rājasaṁ tāmasaṁ guṇam suryādimaṇḍalānyeva vimalādyāśca śaktayaḥ
One should worship the lotus's whorl and filaments, the qualities of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas, the orbs beginning with the Sun, and the powers beginning with Vimala.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.126.6)
दुर्गां गणं सरस्वतीं क्षेत्रपालं च कोणके । आसनं मूर्तिमभ्यर्च्य वासुदेवं बलं स्मरन्
durgāṁ gaṇaṁ sarasvatīṁ kṣetrapālaṁ ca koṇake āsanaṁ mūrtimabhyarcya vāsudevaṁ balaṁ smaran
One should worship Durga, Ganesha, Sarasvati, and the Kshetrapala at the corners; having worshipped the seat and the image, and remembering Vasudeva and Bala —
Verse 7 (garuda.1.126.7)
अनिरुद्धं महात्मानं नारायणमथार्चयेत् । हृदयादीनि चाङ्गानि शङ्खादीन्यायुधानि च
aniruddhaṁ mahātmānaṁ nārāyaṇamathārcayet hṛdayādīni cāṅgāni śaṅkhādīnyāyudhāni ca
one should then worship the great-souled Aniruddha and Narayana, along with their limbs beginning with the heart, and their weapons beginning with the conch.
