Purvakhanda — Acharakanda · Chapter 153
The Diagnosis of Anorexia (Arochaka)
Verse 1 (garuda.1.153.1)
dhanvantarirudāca arocakanidānte vakṣye'haṁ suśrutādhunā arocako bhaveddoṣairjihvāhṛdayasaṁśrayaiḥ
Dhanvantari said: O Sushruta, I shall now declare the diagnosis of Arochaka, loss of appetite and taste. It arises from the humors lodged in the tongue and heart —
Verse 2 (garuda.1.153.2)
sannipātena manasaḥ santāpena ca pañcamaḥ kaṣāyatiktamadhuraṁ vātādiṣu mukhaṁ kramāt
or from sannipata, all three humors together, with a fifth type arising from mental distress. The taste in the mouth becomes astringent, bitter, and sweet respectively, according to Vata and the other humors —
Verse 3 (garuda.1.153.3)
sarvaṁ vītarasaṁ śokakrodhādiṣu yathā manaḥ chardidoṣaiḥ pṛthaksarvairduṣṭairanyaiśca pañcamaḥ
In the mental type, through grief, anger, and the like, the mouth becomes entirely without taste. Vomiting occurs separately from each vitiated humor, and the fifth type arises from other emotional causes.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.153.4)
udāno'dhikṛtāndoṣānsarvaṁ sandhyarhamasyati āśu kleśo'sya lāvaṇyaprasekārucayaḥ kramāt
The Udana-vayu expels, at their proper time, all the humors that are due for release. Its early distress consists, in order, of a saline taste, salivation, and loss of appetite —
Verse 5 (garuda.1.153.5)
nābhipṛṣṭhaṁ rujatyāśu pārśve cāhāramutkṣipet tato vicchrinnalpālpakaṣāyaṁ phenilaṁ vamet
it quickly causes pain in the navel, back, and sides, and expels the food eaten; then, intermittently, it produces small amounts of astringent, frothy vomit —
Verse 6 (garuda.1.153.6)
śabdodgarayutaḥ kṛcchramanukṛcchreṇa vegavat kāsāsyaśoṣakaṁ vātātsvarapīḍāsamanvitam
accompanied by belching, occurring with difficulty and then with still greater difficulty and force; from Vata it produces cough and dryness of the mouth, along with distress in the voice —
Verse 7 (garuda.1.153.7)
pittātkṣārodakanibhaṁ dhūmraṁ haritapītakam sāsṛgamlaṁ kaṭutiktaṁ tṛṇmūrchādāhapākavat
from Pitta the vomit resembles alkaline water, smoky, greenish-yellow, mixed with blood, sour, pungent, and bitter, accompanied by thirst, fainting, burning, and a cooking-like sensation —
Verse 8 (garuda.1.153.8)
kaphātsnigdhaṁ ghanaṁ pītaṁ śleṣmatastu samākṣikam madhuraṁ lavaṇaṁ bhūri prasaktaṁ lomaharṣaṇam
from Kapha the vomit is unctuous, thick, and yellow; from excess phlegm it becomes honey-like, sweet and salty, copious and persistent, accompanied by horripilation —
Verse 9 (garuda.1.153.9)
makhaśvayathumādhuryatandrāhṛllāsakāsavān sarvairliṅgaiḥ samāpannastyājyo bhavati sarvathā
with swelling of the face, a sweet taste, drowsiness, nausea, and cough. A patient showing all these signs together, that is, the tridoshic form, should be entirely abandoned as incurable.
Verse 10 (garuda.1.153.10)
sarvaṁ yasya ca vidviṣṭaṁ darśanaśravaṇādibhiḥ vātādinaiva saṁkruddhakṛmiduṣṭānnaje gade śūlavepatuhṛllāso viśeṣātkṛmije bhavet
One to whom everything becomes repugnant through sight, sound, and the like has the mental type. In the disease caused by aggravated Vata and the rest, or by worms, or by spoiled food, there occur cramping pain, trembling, and nausea, and this is especially marked in the worm-caused type.
