Purvakhanda — Acharakanda · Chapter 165
The Diagnosis of Krimi (Intestinal Worms)
Verse 1 (garuda.1.165.1)
śrīgaruḍamahāpurāṇam 165 dhanvantariruvāca krimayaśca dvidhā proktā bāhyabhyantarabhedataḥ bahirmalakaphāsṛgviṭjanmabhedāccaturvidhāḥ
Dhanvantari said: Worms are said to be of two kinds, by the division into external and internal; and again, by their origin from waste-matter, phlegm, blood, and stool, they are of four kinds.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.165.2)
nāmato viṁśatividhā bāhyāstatra malodbhavāḥ tilapramāṇasaṁsthānavarṇāḥ keśāmbarāśrayāḥ
By name they are twenty kinds. Among these, the external worms born of waste-matter are the size, shape, and colour of sesame seeds, and they lodge in the hair and in clothing.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.165.3)
bahupādāśca sūkṣmāśca yūkā likṣāśca nāmataḥ dvidhā te koṣṭhapiḍikāḥ kaṇḍūgaṇḍānprakurvate
They are many-legged and minute, and by name are called yuka (lice) and liksha (nits) — thus two kinds; they produce pustules and itchy swellings on the body.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.165.4)
kuṣṭhaikahetavo'ntarjāḥ śleṣmajā bāhyasambhavāḥ madhurānnaguḍakṣīradadhimatsyanavaudanaiḥ
The internal worms are, by themselves, a cause of kushtha. The worms born of kapha enter the body from without, through sweet food, jaggery, milk, curd, fish, and freshly cooked rice —
Verse 5 (garuda.1.165.5)
kaphādāmāśaye jātā vṛddhāḥ sarpanti sarvataḥ pṛthubradhnanibhāḥ kecitkecidgaṇḍūpadopamāḥ
— and, born of kapha in the stomach, when grown they crawl about everywhere; some resemble a broad radish, others resemble earthworms.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.165.6)
rūḍhadhānyāṅkurākārāstanudīrghāstathāṇavaḥ śvetāstāmrāvabhāsāśca nāmataḥ saptadhā tu te
Some are shaped like sprouted grain, some thin and long, and some minute; they are white or copper-coloured, and by name they are of seven kinds —
Verse 7 (garuda.1.165.7)
antrādā udarāveṣṭā hṛdayādā mahāgudāḥ cyuravo darbhakusumāḥ sugandhāste ca kurvate
— antrada (gut-eaters), udaravestha (belly-coilers), hridayada (heart-eaters), mahaguda, chyurava, darbhakusuma, and sugandha; these produce —
Verse 8 (garuda.1.165.8)
hṛllāsamāsyaśravaṇamavipākamarocakam mūrchācchardijvarānāhakārśyakṣavathupīnasān
— nausea, drooling from the mouth, indigestion, loss of appetite, fainting, vomiting, fever, constipation, emaciation, sneezing, and catarrh.
Verse 9 (garuda.1.165.9)
raktavāhiśirāsthānaraktajā jantavo'ṇavaḥ apādā vṛttatāmrāśca saukṣmyātkecidadarśanāḥ
The minute creatures born of blood dwell in the blood-carrying veins; they are footless, round, and copper-coloured, and some, owing to their minuteness, cannot even be seen.
Verse 10 (garuda.1.165.10)
keśādā romavidhvaṁsā romadvīpā udumbarāḥ ṣaṭte kuṣṭhaikakarmāṇaḥ sahasaurasamātaraḥ
Kesada (hair-eaters), romavidhvamsa (hair-destroyers), romadvipa, and udumbara — these, six in number together with sausura and matri, act singly to produce kushtha.
Verse 11 (garuda.1.165.11)
pakvāśaye purīṣotthā jāyante'thovisarpiṇaḥ vṛddhāste syurbhaveyuśca te yadāmāśayonmukhāḥ
Worms born of stool arise in the large intestine and then begin to spread; when grown, they may also move upward toward the stomach —
Verse 12 (garuda.1.165.12)
tadāsyodgāraniḥ śvāmaviḍgandhānuvidhāyinaḥ pṛthuvṛttatanusthūlāḥ śyāvapītasitāsitāḥ
— and then, imparting the odour of stool to the belching and breath, they appear broad, round, thin, or thick, and of dusky, yellow, white, or black colour.
Verse 13 (garuda.1.165.13)
te pañcanāmnā krimayaḥ kakerukamakerukāḥ sausurādāḥ saśūlākhyā lelihā janayanti hi
These worms are five by name — kakeruka, makeruka, sausurada, sashula, and leliha; and they produce —
Verse 14 (garuda.1.165.14)
vaṅbhedaśūlaviṣṭambhakārśyapāruṣyapāṇḍutāḥ romaharṣāgnisadanaṁ gudakaṇḍūṁrvimārgagāḥ
— stool passing in broken fragments, colic pain, constipation, emaciation, roughness of the skin, pallor, horripilation, weak digestion, and, when they stray into the wrong passage, itching at the anus.
