Verse 1 (garuda.1.2.1)

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ kathaṁ vyāsena kathitaṁ purāṇaṁ gāruḍaṁ tava etatsarvaṁ samākhyāhi paraṁ viṣṇukathāśrayam

The sages said: Tell us the Garuda Purana just as it was spoken to you by Vyasa; recount to us that whole essential account resting upon the stories of Vishnu.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.2.2)

taṁ praṇamyopaviṣṭo'haṁ pṛṣṭavānhi munīśvaram sūta uvāca vyāsa brūhi hare rūpaṁ jagatsargādikaṁ tataḥ

Bowing to him I sat down and asked that lord of sages. Suta said: O Vyasa, tell me of Hari's form and of the creation of the world and all that follows.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.2.4)

manye dhyāyasi taṁ yasmāttasmājjānāsi taṁ vibhum evaṁ pṛṣṭo yathā prāha tathā viprā ? nibodhata

I think that because you meditate upon him, you know that all-pervading one. Thus asked, O brahmins, hear what he said in reply.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.2.5)

Verse 6 (garuda.1.2.6)

Vyasa said: I, together with Narada, Daksha, Bhrigu and the other sages, bowed to Brahma, the dweller of Brahmaloka, and asked him — tell us the essential account.

Verse 8 (garuda.1.2.8)

Brahma said: Just as Vishnu, together with the gods, told the essential Garuda Purana to Rudra and to me, O Vyasa, so I now tell it to you.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.2.9)

Vyasa said: How did Hari, long ago, together with the gods, tell Rudra this essential, deeply meaningful Garuda Purana? Tell me, O Brahma.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.2.10)

brahmovāca ahaṁ gato'driṁ kailāsamindrādyairdaivataiḥ saha tatra dṛṣṭo mayā rudro dhyāyamānaḥ paraṁ padam

Brahma said: I went to Mount Kailasa together with Indra and the other gods. There I saw Rudra, meditating on the Supreme State.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.2.11)

sārātsārataraṁ tattvaṁ śrotukāmaḥ suraiḥ saha rudra uvāca ahaṁ dhyāyāmi taṁ viṣṇuṁ paramātmānamīśvaram

He, together with the gods, wished to hear the truth more essential than the essence itself. Rudra said: I meditate upon that Vishnu, who is the Supreme Self and Lord,

Verse 13 (garuda.1.2.13)

sarvadaṁ sarvagaṁ sarvaṁ sarvaprāṇihṛdisthitam bhasmoddhūlitadehastu jaṭāmaṇḍalamaṇḍitaḥ

who bestows all, who pervades all, who is the form of all, and who dwells in the heart of every being — whose body is adorned with ash and beautified by a mass of matted locks.

Verse 14 (garuda.1.2.14)

O son of Vinata, as I am known among the gods by the name Shri (Lord of Lakshmi), so among the Puranas the Garuda Purana shall become known by the name of Garuda.

Verse 57 (garuda.1.2.57)

yathāhaṁ kīrttanīyo'tha tathā tvaṁ garuḍātmanā māṁ dhyātvā pakṣimukhyedaṁ purāṇaṁ gada gāruḍam

As I am worthy to be glorified, so shall you also be, in your form as Garuda. Meditating on me, O best of birds, proclaim this Purana as the Garuda.

Verse 58 (garuda.1.2.58)

ityukto garuḍo rudra ! kaśyapāyāha pṛcchate kaśyapo gāruḍaṁ śrutvā vṛkṣaṁ dagdhamajīvayat

Thus addressed, O Rudra, Garuda spoke this to Kashyapa, who had asked him. Hearing the Garuda mantra, Kashyapa restored a burnt tree to life.

Verse 59 (garuda.1.2.59)

svayaṁ cānyamanā bhūtvā vidyayānyānya jīvayat yakṣi oṁuṁsvāhājāpī vidyayaṁ gāruḍī parā garuḍoktaṁ gāruḍaṁ hi śrṛṇu rudra ! madātmakam

Even absent-mindedly, by that lore he could restore others to life as well. This Garuda-lore is supreme, destroying venom, chanted with Om and Svaha. Hear this Garuda Purana as spoken by Garuda, O Rudra, as one with me.
