Purvakhanda — Acharakanda · Chapter 230
The Glory of Remembering Vishnu
Verse 1 (garuda.1.230.1)
sūta uvāca ālokya sarvaśāstrāṇi vicārya ca punaḥ punaḥ idamekaṁ suniṣpannaṁ dhyeyo nārāyaṇaḥ sadā
Suta said: Having examined all the scriptures and reflected again and again, this one conclusion has been firmly established: Narayana alone is ever to be meditated upon.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.230.2)
kiṁ tasya dānaiḥ kintīrthaiḥ kiṁ tapobhiḥ kimadhvaraiḥ yo nityaṁ dhyāyate devaṁ nārāyaṇamananyadhīḥ
What need has he of gifts, sacred fords, austerities, or sacrifices, who with single-minded intellect ever meditates on the god Narayana?
Verse 3 (garuda.1.230.3)
ṣaṣṭistīrthasahasrāṇi ṣaṣṭistīrthaśatāni ca nārāyaṇapraṇāmasya kalāṁ nārhanti ṣoḍaśīm
Sixty thousand sacred fords and sixty hundred sacred fords are not worth even a sixteenth part of one obeisance to Narayana.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.230.4)
prayaścittānyaśeṣāṇi tapaḥ karmāṇi yāni vai viddhi teṣāmaśeṣāṇāṁ kṛṣṇānusmaraṇaṁ param
Know that the remembrance of Krishna is superior to all penances, austerities, and rites without exception.
Verse 5 (garuda.1.230.5)
kṛtapāpe'nuraktiśca yasya puṁsaḥ prajāyate prāyaścittantu tasyaikaṁ hareḥ saṁsmaraṇaṁ param
If a man develops attachment to sin he has committed, the supreme and sole expiation for him is the remembrance of Hari.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.230.6)
muhūrtamapi yo dhyāyennārāyaṇamatandritaḥ so'pi svargatimāpnoti kiṁ punastatparāyaṇaḥ
Even he who meditates on Narayana for a single muhurta, free of laziness, attains the state of heaven — how much more, then, one wholly devoted to Him?
Verse 7 (garuda.1.230.7)
jāgratsvapnasuṣupteṣu yogasthasya ca yoginaḥ yā kācinmanaso vṛttiḥ sā bhavatyacyutāśrayāt
In waking, dream, and deep sleep, for the yogi established in yoga, whatever activity of mind occurs takes refuge in the Imperishable One.
Verse 8 (garuda.1.230.8)
uttiṣṭhannipatanviṣṇuṁ pralapanviviśaṁstathā bhuñjañjāgracca govindaṁ mādhavaṁ yaśca saṁsmaret
He who remembers Vishnu — Govinda, Madhava — while rising, falling, speaking, entering, eating, or waking,
Verse 9 (garuda.1.230.9)
svesve karmaṇyabhirataḥ kuryāccittaṁ janārdane eṣā śāstrānusāroktiḥ kimanyairbahubhāṣitaiḥ
— should, even while engaged in his own duties, fix his mind on Janardana. This is the declaration in accordance with the scriptures — what need of much other talk?
Verse 10 (garuda.1.230.10)
dhyānameva paro dharmo dhyānameva paraṁ tapaḥ dhyānameva paraṁ śaucaṁ tasmāddhyānaparo bhavet
Meditation alone is the supreme dharma; meditation alone is the supreme austerity; meditation alone is the supreme purity — therefore one should be devoted to meditation.
Verse 11 (garuda.1.230.11)
nāsti viṣṇoḥ paraṁ dhtheyaṁ tapo nānaśanātparam tasmātpradhānamatroktaṁ vāsudevasya cintanam
There is nothing higher to meditate upon than Vishnu; there is no austerity higher than fasting; therefore contemplation of Vasudeva is declared here to be foremost.
Verse 12 (garuda.1.230.12)
yaddurlabhaṁ paraṁ prāpyaṁ manaso yanna gocaram tadapyaprārthitaṁ dhyāto dadāti madhusūdanaḥ
That which is difficult to attain, the supreme goal, that which is beyond the reach of the mind — even that, unasked, Madhusudana grants to one who meditates on Him.
Verse 13 (garuda.1.230.13)
pramādātkurvatāṁ karma pracyavetādhvareṣu yat smaraṇādeva tadviṣṇoḥ saṁpūrṇaṁ syāditi śrutiḥ
Whatever defect occurs through carelessness for those performing sacrificial rites — through the mere remembrance of Vishnu, that rite becomes complete, so says the Shruti.
Verse 14 (garuda.1.230.14)
dhyānena sadṛśo nāsti śodhanaṁ pāpakarmaṇām āgāmidehahetūnāṁ dāhako yogapāvakaḥ
There is no purifier of sinful deeds equal to meditation; the fire of yoga burns away the causes of future embodiment.
Verse 15 (garuda.1.230.15)
viniṣpannasamādhistu muktimatraiva janmani prāpnoti yogī yogāgnidagdhakarmā ca yo'cirāt
The yogi who has perfected samadhi attains liberation in this very birth; and one whose deeds are burnt by the fire of yoga attains it swiftly.
Verse 16 (garuda.1.230.16)
yathāgnirudyataśikhaḥ kakṣaṁ dahati vānilaḥ tathā cittasthite viṣṇau yoginā sarvakilbiṣam
As fire with rising flames, fanned by wind, burns dry grass, so, when Vishnu is fixed in the mind, all the yogi's sins are burnt away.
Verse 17 (garuda.1.230.17)
yathāgniyogātkanakamamalaṁ saṁprajāyate saṁpluṣṭo vāsudevena manuṣyāṇāṁ sadā malaḥ
As gold, through union with fire, becomes pure, so the impurity of men, burnt up by Vasudeva, is ever removed.
Verse 18 (garuda.1.230.18)
gaṅgāsnānasahasreṣu puṣkarasnānakoṭiṣu yatpāpaṁ nilayayāti smṛte naśyati taddharau
Whatever sin dissolves through a thousand baths in the Ganga or ten million baths at Pushkara, that sin is destroyed by merely remembering Hari.
Verse 19 (garuda.1.230.19)
prāṇāyāmasahasnaistu yatpāpaṁ naśyati dhruvam kṣaṇamātreṇa tatpāpaṁ harerdhyānātpraṇaśyati
Whatever sin is surely destroyed by a thousand pranayamas, that sin is destroyed in a mere instant through meditation on Hari.
Verse 20 (garuda.1.230.20)
kaliprabhāvādduṣṭoktiḥ pāṣaṇḍānāṁ tathoktayaḥ na krāmenmānasaṁ tasya yasya cetasi keśavaḥ
Through the influence of Kali, the wicked speech and doctrines of heretics cannot enter the mind of him in whose heart Keshava dwells.
Verse 21 (garuda.1.230.21)
sā tithistadahorātraṁ sa yogaḥ sa ca candramāḥ lagnaṁ tadeva vikhyātaṁ yatra saṁsmaryate hariḥ
That is the true lunar day, that the true day and night, that the true auspicious yoga, and that the true moon — that alone is the renowned auspicious hour, wherein Hari is remembered.
Verse 22 (garuda.1.230.22)
sā hānistanmahacchidraṁ sā cārthajaḍamūkatā canmuhūrtaṁ kṣaṇo vāpi vāsudevo na cintyate
That is loss, that a great deficiency, that indeed dullness and muteness in truth — any muhurta or moment in which Vasudeva is not thought of.
Verse 23 (garuda.1.230.23)
kalau kṛta yugaṁ tasya kalistasya kṛte yuge hṛdi no yasya govindo yasya cetasi nācyutaḥ
For one in whose heart Govinda and Achyuta dwell, even Kali becomes Krita; and for one lacking them, even the Krita age becomes Kali.
Verse 24 (garuda.1.230.24)
yasyāgratastathā pṛṣṭhe gacchatastiṣṭhato'pi vā govinde niyataṁ cetaḥ kṛtakṛtyaḥ sadaiva saḥ
He whose mind is ever fixed on Govinda, whether He is before him or behind, whether he walks or stands still — he is ever one whose purpose is fulfilled.
Verse 25 (garuda.1.230.25)
vāsudeve mano yasya japahomārcanādiṣu tasyāntarāyo maitreya vevendratvādikaṁ phalam
O Maitreya, for one whose mind is on Vasudeva during recitation, fire-offering, and worship, even the status of Indra is merely an obstacle.
Verse 26 (garuda.1.230.26)
asaṁtyajya ca gārhasthayaṁ sa taptvā ca mahattapaḥ chinatti pauruṣīṁ māyāṁ keśavārpitamānasaḥ
Without even abandoning the householder's life, and without performing great austerity, one whose mind is offered to Keshava cuts through the great Maya that binds the soul.
Verse 27 (garuda.1.230.27)
kṣamāṁ kurvanti kruddheṣu dayāṁ mūrkheṣu mānavāḥ mudañca dharmaśīleṣu govinde hṛdayasthite
When Govinda abides in the heart, men show forbearance toward the angry, compassion toward fools, and joy toward the righteous.
Verse 28 (garuda.1.230.28)
dhyāyennārāyaṇaṁ devaṁ snānadānādikarmasu prāyaściteteṣu sarveṣu duṣkṛteṣu viśeṣataḥ
One should meditate on the god Narayana during bathing, giving, and similar rites — and especially during all these expiations for wrongdoing.
Verse 29 (garuda.1.230.29)
lābhasteṣāṁ jayasteṣāṁ kutasteṣāṁ parābhavaḥ yeṣāmindīvaraśyāmo hṛdayastho janārdanaḥ
Gain is theirs, victory is theirs — how could defeat be theirs, in whose hearts dwells Janardana, dark as the blue lotus?
Verse 30 (garuda.1.230.30)
kīṭapakṣigaṇānāñca harau saṁnyastacetasām ūrdhvā hyeva gatiścāsti kiṁ punarjñānināṁ nṛṇām
Even for worms and birds whose minds are fixed on Hari, there is an upward course after death — how much more, then, for wise men?
Verse 31 (garuda.1.230.31)
vāsudevatarucchāyā nātiśītātitāpadā narakadvāraśamanī sā kimarthaṁ na sevyate
The shade of the tree that is Vasudeva is neither excessively cold nor excessively hot; it closes the door of hell — why then is it not resorted to?
Verse 32 (garuda.1.230.32)
na ca durvāsasaḥ śāpo rājyañcāpi śacīpateḥ hantuṁ samarthaṁ hi sakhe hṛtkṛte madhusūdane
O friend, neither Durvasa's curse nor even Indra's kingdom is capable of harming one for whom Madhusudana is enshrined in the heart.
Verse 33 (garuda.1.230.33)
vadatastiṣṭhato'nyadvā svecchayā karma kurvataḥ nāpayāti yadā cintā siddhāṁ manyeta dhāraṇām
When, whether speaking, standing still, or performing any other action by one's own will, the remembrance of Hari never departs — one should consider one's meditative concentration perfected.
Verse 34 (garuda.1.230.34)
dhyeyaḥ sadā savitṛmaṇḍalamadhyavarto nārāyaṇaḥ sarasijāsanasanniviṣṭaḥ keyūravānmakarakuṇḍalavānkirīṭī hārī hiraṇmayavapurdhṛtaśaṅkhacakraḥ
Narayana, seated in the middle of the sun's orb, resting upon a lotus-seat, adorned with armlets, crocodile-shaped earrings, crown, and garlands, of golden-hued form, bearing the conch and discus — is ever to be meditated upon.
Verse 35 (garuda.1.230.35)
na hi dhyānena sadṛśaṁ pavitramiha vidyate śvapacānnāni bhuñjāno pāpī naivātra lipyate
There is indeed nothing so purifying in this world as meditation; even a sinner eating the food of a dog-cooker is not tainted by it here.
Verse 36 (garuda.1.230.36)
The mind of a creature is ever attached to sense-objects — if that same mind were similarly fixed on Narayana, who would not be freed from bondage?
Verse 37 (garuda.1.230.37)
sūta uvāca viṣṇubhaktiryasya citte kaṁ vā jīvo nametsadā sa tārayati cātmānaṁ tadaiva duritārṇavāt
Suta said: He in whose mind is devotion to Vishnu — or whatever living being ever bows to Him — he saves himself, at that very moment, from the ocean of sin.
Verse 38 (garuda.1.230.38)
tañjñānaṁ yatra govindaḥ sā kathā yatra kāśavaḥ tatkarma yattadarthāya kimanyairbahubhāṣitaiḥ
That alone is knowledge wherein Govinda is present; that alone a worthy story wherein Keshava is present; that alone worthy action which is for His sake — what need of much other talk?
Verse 39 (garuda.1.230.39)
sā jihvā yā hariṁ stauti taccittaṁ yattadarpitam tāveva kevalau ślāghyau yau tatpūjākarau karau
That alone is a true tongue which praises Hari; that alone a true mind which is offered to Him; those two hands alone are worthy of praise which perform His worship.
Verse 40 (garuda.1.230.40)
praṇāmamīśasya śiraḥ phalaṁ vidustadarcanaṁ pāṇiphalaṁ divaukasaḥ manaḥ phalaṁ tadguṇakarmacintanaṁ vacastu govindaguṇastutiḥ phalam
The dwellers of heaven declare: the fruit of the head is obeisance to the Lord; the fruit of the hand is His worship; the fruit of the mind is contemplation of His deeds and virtues; and the fruit of speech is the praise of Govinda's virtues.
Verse 41 (garuda.1.230.41)
merumandaramātro'pi rāśiḥ pāpasya karmaṇaḥ keśavasmaraṇādeva tasya sarvaṁ vinaśyati
Even a mountain-heap of sinful deeds, as large as Meru or Mandara, is entirely destroyed by the mere remembrance of Keshava.
Verse 42 (garuda.1.230.42)
yatkiñcitkurute karma puruṣaḥ sādhvasādhu vā sarvaṁ nārāyaṇe nyasya kurvannapi na limpati
Whatever action, good or bad, a man performs — having offered it all to Narayana, even while acting, he is not tainted.
Verse 43 (garuda.1.230.43)
tṛṇādicaturāsyāntaṁ bhūtagrāmaṁ caturvidham carācaraṁ jagatsarvaṁ prasuptaṁ māyayā tava
From the blade of grass up to the four-faced Brahma, the fourfold host of beings, this entire moving and unmoving world lies asleep through Your Maya.
Verse 44 (garuda.1.230.44)
yasminnyastamatirna yāti narakaṁ svargo'pi yaccintane vighno yatra navā viśetkathamapi brāhmo'piloko'lpakaḥ muktiñcetasi saṁsthito jaḍadhiyāṁ puṁsāṁ dadātyavyayaḥ kiñcitraṁ yadayaṁ prayāti vilayaṁ tatrācyute kīrtite
He on whom the mind is fixed does not go to hell; even heaven, in thought of Him, seems an obstacle one would not wish to enter, since even Brahma's world seems trifling by comparison; the Imperishable, abiding in the mind, grants liberation even to dull-witted men — what wonder, then, that all else dissolves wherever the Imperishable is glorified.
Verse 45 (garuda.1.230.45)
agnikāryaṁ japaḥ snānaṁ viṣṇordhyānañca pūjanam gantuṁ duḥ khodadheḥ kuryurye ca tatra naranti te
Fire-rites, recitation, bathing, meditation on Vishnu, and worship — those who perform these to cross the ocean of sorrow, and who venture into it with this purpose, swim across it.
Verse 46 (garuda.1.230.46)
rāṣṭrasya śaraṇaṁ rājā pitaro bālakasya ca dharmaśca sarvamartyānāṁ sarvasya śaraṇaṁ hariḥ
The king is the refuge of the kingdom, parents the refuge of the child, and dharma the refuge of all mortals — but Hari is the refuge of all.
Verse 47 (garuda.1.230.47)
ye namanti jagadyoniṁ vāsudevaṁ sanātanam na yebhyo vidyate tīrthamadhikaṁ munisattam
O best of sages, there is no sacred ford greater than those who bow to Vasudeva, the eternal source of the universe.
Verse 48 (garuda.1.230.48)
anargharatnapūjāñca kuryātsvādhyāyameva ca tamevoddiśya govindaṁ dhyāyannityamatandritaḥ
One should perform worship with priceless jewels and Vedic study, dedicating it all to Govinda alone, meditating on Him constantly, without laziness.
Verse 49 (garuda.1.230.49)
śūdraṁ vā bhagavadbhaktaṁ niṣādaṁ śvapacaṁ tathā dvijajāti samaṁmanyo na yāti narakaṁ naraḥ
The man who regards a devotee of the Lord — be he a shudra, a hunter, or even a dog-cooker — as equal to one of twice-born birth, does not go to hell.
Verse 50 (garuda.1.230.50)
If a man ever reverently praises a wealthy man out of desire for wealth — who then would not be freed from bondage by praising the Creator of the universe?
Verse 51 (garuda.1.230.51)
yathā prāptavano vahnirdahatyārdramapīndhanam tathāvidhaḥ sthito viṣṇuryogināṁ sarvakilviṣam
As fire, having caught upon wood, burns even damp fuel, so Vishnu, abiding thus in the heart, burns away all the sins of the yogi.
Verse 52 (garuda.1.230.52)
ādīptaṁ parvataṁ yadvannāśrayanti mṛgādayaḥ tadvatpāpani sarvāṇi yogābhyāsarataṁ naram
Just as deer and other creatures do not take refuge on a blazing mountain, so no sins approach a man devoted to the practice of yoga.
Verse 53 (garuda.1.230.53)
yasya yāvāṁśca viśvāsastasya siddhistu tāvatī etavāneva kṛṣṇasya prabhāvaḥ parimīyate
As much faith as one has, so much is one's accomplishment — Krishna's power is measured only by this.
Verse 54 (garuda.1.230.54)
vidveṣādapi govindaṁ damaghoṣātmajaḥ smaran śiśupālo gatastattvaṁ kiṁ punastatparāyaṇaḥ
Even Shishupala, son of Damaghosha, remembering Govinda out of mere hatred, attained the ultimate truth — how much more, then, one wholly devoted to Him?
