vastreṇācchādayitvā tu pūjanīyaḥ svabhāvataḥ .. yathāśāstraṁ nivedyāni pādamūle tu dāpayet
Having been covered with cloth, it becomes, by its very nature, an object of worship. According to scripture, food-offerings should be presented at its feet.
Verse 58 (garuda.1.48.58)
atha praṇavasaṁyuktaṁ vastrayugmena veṣṭitam .. kalaśaṁ sahiraṇyaṁ ca śiraḥ sthāne nivedayet
Then a vessel joined with the Pranava, wrapped in a pair of cloths, together with gold, should be offered at the place of the head.
Verse 59 (garuda.1.48.59)
sthitvā kuṇḍasamīpe'tha agneḥ sthāpanamācaret .. svaśāstravihitairmantrairvedoktairvātha vā guruḥ
Having taken his place near the fire-pit, one should then perform the establishment of the fire — the guru using mantras prescribed in his own scripture, or those declared in the Veda.
Verse 60 (garuda.1.48.60)
śrīsūktaṁ pāvamānyaṁ ca vāsadāmyasavājinam .. vṛṣākapiṁ ca mitraṁ bahvacaḥ pūrvato japet
The Shri-sukta, the Pavamani hymns, 'vasadamyasavajinam', and the hymns to Vrishakapi and Mitra — these many verses he should recite facing east.
Verse 61 (garuda.1.48.61)
rudraṁ puruṣasūktaṁ ca ślokādhyāyaṁ ca śukriyam .. brahmāṇaṁ pitṛmaitraṁ ca adhvaryyurdakṣiṇe japet
Rudra, the Purusha-sukta, and the Shukriya verse-chapter — the Brahmana and Pitri-Maitra hymns — the Adhvaryu-priest should recite facing south.
Verse 62 (garuda.1.48.62)
vedavrataṁ vāmadevyaṁ jyeṣṭhasāma rathantaram .. bheruṇḍāni ca sāmāni chandogaḥ paścime japet
Vedavrata, Vamadevya, Jyeshtha-Sama, Rathantara, and the Bherunda-Samans — the Chandoga priest should recite facing west.
Verse 63 (garuda.1.48.63)
atharvaśirasaṁ caiva kumbhasūktamatharvaṇaḥ .. nīlarudrāṁśca maitraṁ ca atharvaścottare japet
The Atharva-shiras, the Atharvan's Kumbha-sukta, the Nilarudra hymns, and Maitra — the Atharvan-priest should recite facing north.
Verse 64 (garuda.1.48.64)
kuṇḍaṁ cāstreṇa saṁprokṣya ācāryyastu viśeṣataḥ .. tāmrapātre śarāve vā yathāvibhavato'pi vā
Having sprinkled the fire-pit with the weapon-mantra, the acharya, especially — in a copper vessel or an earthen dish, or according to his means,
Verse 65 (garuda.1.48.65)
jātavedasamānīya agratastaṁ niveśayet .. astreṇa jvālayedvahniṁ kavacena tu veṣṭayet
having brought Jatavedas (Agni), should place it before him. With the weapon-mantra he should kindle the fire, and with the armor-mantra encircle it.
Verse 66 (garuda.1.48.66)
amṛtīkṛtya taṁ paścānmantraiḥ sarvaiśca deśikaḥ .. pātraṁ gṛhya karābhyāṁ ca kuṇḍaṁ bhrāmya tataḥ punaḥ
Having thus rendered it immortal, the acharya, with all the mantras, taking the vessel in both hands, should then circle the fire-pit,
Verse 67 (garuda.1.48.67)
vaiṣṇavena tu yogena paraṁ tejastu niḥ kṣipet .. dakṣiṇe sthāpayedbrahma praṇītāñcottareṇa tu
and, through the Vaishnava power of yoga, cast the supreme radiance into it. He should establish the Brahma-priest to the south, and the offering-water vessel to the north,
Verse 68 (garuda.1.48.68)
sādhāraṇena mantreṇa svasūtravihitena vā .. dikṣudikṣu tato dadyātparidhīṁ viṣṭaraiḥ saha
with the common mantra, or with the one prescribed in his own Vedic branch. Then, in each direction, he should place the enclosing sticks along with the seats.
Verse 69 (garuda.1.48.69)
brahmaviṣṇuhareśānāḥ pūjyāḥ sādhāraṇena tu .. darbheṣu sthāpayedvahniṁ darbhaiśca pariveṣṭitam
Brahma, Vishnu, Hara, and Ishana should be worshipped with the common mantra. Having established the fire upon kusha grass, one should surround it with kusha as well.
Verse 70 (garuda.1.48.70)
darbhatoyena saṁspṛṣṭo mantrahīno'pi śudhyati .. prāgagrairudagagraiśca pratyagagrairakhaṇḍitaiḥ
Even one without mantras becomes purified when touched by kusha-water. With blades pointing east, pointing north, and pointing west, unbroken,
Verse 71 (garuda.1.48.71)
vitatairveṣṭito vahniḥ svayaṁ sānnidhyamāvrajet .. agnestu rakṣaṇārthāya yaduktaṁ karmamantravit
spread and encircled, the fire itself draws near of its own accord. That rite prescribed for the protection of the fire, the knower of the rite-mantras should perform —
Verse 72 (garuda.1.48.72)
ācāryyāḥ kecidicchanti jātakarmādyanantaram .. pavitraṁ tu tataḥ kṛtvā kuryyādājyasya saṁskṛtim
some acharyas hold it proper to perform this right after the birth-rite and the rest. Having then performed the purification, the sanctification of the ghee should be done.
Verse 73 (garuda.1.48.73)
ācāryyo'tha nirīkṣyāpi nīrājyamabhimantritam .. ājyabhāgābhighārāntamavekṣetājyasiddhaye
The acharya, having also looked upon the consecrated offering-lamp, should observe, for the perfection of the ghee, the sequence from the ajya-offering to the final anointing.
Verse 74 (garuda.1.48.74)
pañcapañcāhutīrhutvā ājyena tadanantaram .. garbhādhānāditastāvadyāvadgodānikaṁ bhavet
Thereafter, having offered five sets of five oblations of ghee, with the mantras from the conception-rite up to the first-shaving rite,
Verse 75 (garuda.1.48.75)
svaśāstravihitairmantraiḥ praṇavenātha homayet .. tataḥ pūrṇāhutiṁ dattvā pūrṇātpūrṇamanārethaḥ
with mantras prescribed in one's own scripture, or with the Pranava, the oblation should be offered. Then, having given the full oblation, in unbroken continuity from full to full,
Verse 76 (garuda.1.48.76)
evamutpādito vahniḥ sarvakarmasu siddhidaḥ .. pūjayitvā tato vahniṁ kuṇḍeṣu viharettathā
the fire thus generated grants success in every rite. Having worshipped the fire, it should then be distributed among the other fire-pits,
Verse 77 (garuda.1.48.77)
indrādīnāṁ svamantraiśca tathāhutiśataṁ śatam .. purṇāhutiṁ śatasyānte sarveṣāṁ caiva homayet
to Indra and the other directional deities, with their own mantras, a hundred oblations each. At the end of the hundred, the full oblation should be offered to all of them together.
Verse 78 (garuda.1.48.78)
svāmāhutimathājyeṣu hotā tatkalaśe nyaset .. devatāścaiva mantrāṁśca tathaiva jātavedasam
Then the officiant should place his own oblation among the ghee-offerings, in that same vessel — the deities, the mantras, and Jatavedas as well,
Verse 79 (garuda.1.48.79)
ātmānamekataḥ kṛtvā tataḥ pūrṇāṁ pradāpayet .. niṣkṛṣya bahirācāryyo dikpālānāṁ baliṁ haret
having made himself one with them, should then offer the full oblation. Having stepped outside, the acharya should offer the bali to the guardians of the directions,
Verse 80 (garuda.1.48.80)
bhūtānāṁ caiva devānāṁ nāgānāṁ ca prayogataḥ .. tilāśca samidhaścaiva homadravyaṁ dvayaṁ smṛtam
and, in due order, to the elemental spirits, the gods, and the serpents as well. Sesame seeds and sacrificial sticks — these two are declared as the materials of the oblation.
Verse 81 (garuda.1.48.81)
ājyaṁ tayoḥ sahakāri tatpradhānaṁ yadaṅka(kṣa)yoḥ .. puruṣasuktaṁ pūrveṇaiva rudracaiva tu dakṣiṇe
Ghee assists both, and is itself the principal ingredient in each. The Purusha-sukta facing east alone; and Rudra facing south;
Verse 82 (garuda.1.48.82)
jyeṣṭhasāma ca bhāruṇḍaṁ tannayāmīti paścime .. nīlarudro mahāmantraḥ kumbhasūktamatharvaṇaḥ
the Jyeshtha-Sama and the Bherunda hymn, 'tan nayami' — facing west; the great Nilarudra mantra, the Atharvan's Kumbha-sukta, facing north.
Verse 83 (garuda.1.48.83)
hutvā sahastramekaikaṁ devaṁ śirasi kalpayet .. evaṁ madhye tathā pāde pūrṇāhutyā tathā punaḥ
Having offered a thousand oblations each, each deity should be established at the head. Likewise in the middle, and at the feet as well, again with the full oblation,
Verse 84 (garuda.1.48.84)
śiraḥ sthāneṣu juhuyādāviśeccāpyanukramāt .. vedānāmādimantrairvā mantrairvā devanāmabhiḥ
having offered at the head-places, entry should be caused in due order — with the primary mantras of the Vedas, or with the name-mantras of the deities,
Verse 85 (garuda.1.48.85)
svaśāstravihitairvāpi gāyattryā vātha te dvijāḥ .. gāyattryā vāthavācāryyo vyāhṛtipraṇavena tu
or with mantras prescribed in one's own scripture, or with the Gayatri — thus the brahmins should proceed. With the Gayatri, or with the vyahriti-formulas and the Pranava, the acharya should proceed.
Verse 86 (garuda.1.48.86)
evaṁ homavidhiṁ kṛtvā nyasenmantrāṁstu deśikaḥ .. caraṇāvagnimīḷe tu iṣetvo gulphayoḥ sthitāḥ
Having thus performed the oblation-rite, the teacher should place the mantras — 'agnim ile' upon the two feet, 'ise tva' upon the two ankles;
Verse 87 (garuda.1.48.87)
agna āyāhi jaṅghe dve śannodevīti jānunī .. bṛhadrathantare ūrū udareṣvātilo (svātino) nyaset
'agna ayahi' upon the two shins, 'sam no devi' upon the two knees; the Brihat and Rathantara upon the two thighs, and 'a tva' should be placed upon the belly.
Verse 88 (garuda.1.48.88)
dīrghāyuṣṭvāya hṛdaye śrīścate galake nyaset .. trātāramindramurasi netrābhyāṁ tu triyambakam
'dirghayushtvaya' upon the heart, 'shrishcha te' upon the throat; 'tratam indram' upon the chest, and 'tryambakam' upon the two eyes;
Verse 89 (garuda.1.48.89)
mūrddhābhava tathā mūrdhni ālagnāddhomamācaret .. utthā payettato devamuttiṣṭhabrahmaṇaspate !
likewise 'murdha bhava' upon the head — thus should the oblation be offered at each point. The deity should then be roused, with 'uttishtha brahmanaspate'.
Verse 90 (garuda.1.48.90)
vedapuṇyāhaśabdena prāsādānāṁ pradakṣiṇam .. piṇḍikālaṁbhanaṁ kṛtvā devasyatveti mantravit
With the Vedic Punyaha-utterance, the circumambulation of the temples should be performed. Having touched the pedestal, the knower of mantras should say 'devasya tva'.
Verse 91 (garuda.1.48.91)
dikpālānsaha ratnaiśca dhātūnauṣadhayastathā .. lauhabījāni siddhāni paścāddevaṁ tu vinyaset
Having placed the guardians of the directions together with gems, minerals and herbs, and perfected metallic seeds, thereafter the deity should be installed.
Verse 92 (garuda.1.48.92)
na garbhe sthāpayeddevaṁ na garbhaṁ tu parityajet .. īṣanmadhyaṁ parityajya tato doṣāpahaṁ tu tat
The deity should not be placed too deep within the sanctum-cavity, nor should the cavity be left altogether empty; leaving a small space in the middle removes any fault.
Verse 93 (garuda.1.48.93)
tilasya tuṣamātraṁ tu uttaraṁ kiñcidānayet .. oṁ sthiro bhava śivo bhava prajābhyaśca namonamaḥ
A space the measure of a sesame husk should be left, slightly toward the north. 'Om, be steadfast, be auspicious; homage, homage to the offspring of the world' —
Verse 94 (garuda.1.48.94)
devasya tvā saviturvaḥ ṣaḍbhyo vai vinyasedguruḥ .. tattvavarṇakalāmātraṁ prajāni bhuvanātmaje
'devasya tva savituh' — by these six mantras the guru should install it. The measure of essence, letter, and portion — 'prajani bhuvanatmaje' —
Verse 95 (garuda.1.48.95)
ṣaḍbhyo vinyasya siddhārthaṁ dhruvārthairabhimantrayet .. sampātakalaśenaiva snāpayetsupratiṣṭhitam
having installed it with these six, one should consecrate the now-accomplished deity with the fixed mantras. With the gathered water of the collected vessels, the now duly-established image should be bathed.
Verse 96 (garuda.1.48.96)
dīpadhūpasugandhaiśca naivedyaiśca prapūjayet .. arghyaṁ dattvā namaskṛtya tato devaṁ kṣamāpayet
It should be worshipped with lamps, incense, fragrances, and food-offerings. Having given the water-offering and bowed in homage, one should then ask forgiveness of the deity.
Verse 97 (garuda.1.48.97)
pātraṁ vastrayugaṁ chatraṁ tathā divyāṅgulīyakam .. ṛttvigbhyaśca pradātavyā dakṣiṇā caiva śaktitaḥ
A vessel, a pair of garments, an umbrella, and a fine ring — these, along with a fee according to one's means, should be given to the ritual priests.
Verse 98 (garuda.1.48.98)
caturthī juhuyātpaścādyajamānaḥ samāhitaḥ .. āhutīnāṁ śataṁ hutvā tataḥ pūrṇāṁ pradāpayet
The patron of the rite, with focused mind, should then offer the fourth oblation. Having offered a hundred oblations, he should then present the full oblation.
Verse 99 (garuda.1.48.99)
niṣkramya bahirācāryyo dikpālānāṁ baliṁ haret .. ācāryyaḥ puṣpahastastu kṣamasveti visarjayet
Having stepped outside, the acharya should offer the bali to the guardians of the directions. With flowers in hand, the acharya, saying 'forgive us', should perform the dismissal.
Verse 100 (garuda.1.48.100)
yāgānte kapilāṁ dadyādācāryyāya ca cāmaram .. mukuṭaṁ kuṇḍalaṁ chatraṁ keyūraṁ kaṭisūtrakam
At the conclusion of the rite, a cow and a fly-whisk should be given to the acharya — a crown, earrings, an umbrella, an armlet, a girdle-cord,
Verse 101 (garuda.1.48.101)
vyajanaṁ grāmavastrādīnsopaskāraṁ sumaṇḍapam .. bhojanaṁ ca mahātkuryyātkṛtakṛtyaśca jāyate .. yajamāno vimuktaḥ syātsthāpakasya prasādataḥ
a fan, village-cloths and the like, together with accessories, and also a fine pavilion. A grand feast should also be given, and thus one's duty becomes fulfilled — by the grace of the installer, the patron of the rite is set free.
