The Glory of Gaya (IV) — The Invocation for All the Departed
Verse 1 (garuda.1.85.1)
ब्रह्मोवाच । स्नात्वा प्रेतशिलादौ तु वरुणास्थामृतेन च । पिण्डं दद्यादिमैर्मन्त्रैरावाह्य च पितॄन्परान्
brahmovāca snātvā pretaśilādau tu varuṇāsthāmṛtena ca piṇḍaṁ dadyādimairmantrairāvāhya ca pitṝnparān
Brahma said: Having bathed at Pretashila and the other places, and purified with the nectar-water of Varuna, one should invoke the departed ancestors with these mantras and offer the pinda —
Verse 2 (garuda.1.85.2)
अस्मत्कुले मृता ये च गतिर्येषां न विद्यते । आवाहयिष्येतान्सर्वान् दर्भपृष्ठे तिलोदकैः
asmatkule mṛtā ye ca gatiryeṣāṁ na vidyate āvāhayiṣyetānsarvān darbhapṛṣṭhe tilodakaiḥ
'Those who have died in our family, and for whom no destination is known — I invoke all of them upon the kusha-grass, with sesame and water.'
Verse 3 (garuda.1.85.3)
पितृवंशे मृता ये च मातृवंशे च ये मृताः । तेषामुद्धरणार्थाये इमं पिण्डं ददाम्यहम्
pitṛvaṁśe mṛtā ye ca mātṛvaṁśe ca ye mṛtāḥ teṣāmuddharaṇārthāye imaṁ piṇḍaṁ dadāmyaham
'Those who have died in my father's lineage, and those who have died in my mother's lineage — for their deliverance, I offer this pinda.'
Verse 4 (garuda.1.85.4)
मातामहकुले ये च गतिर्येषां न विद्यते । तेषामुद्धरणार्थाय इमं पिण्डं ददाम्यहम्
mātāmahakule ye ca gatiryeṣāṁ na vidyate teṣāmuddharaṇārthāya imaṁ piṇḍaṁ dadāmyaham
'And those in my maternal grandfather's lineage for whom no destination is known — for their deliverance, I offer this pinda.'
Verse 5 (garuda.1.85.5)
अजातदन्ता ये केचिद्ये च गर्भे प्रपीडिताः । तेषामुद्धरणार्थाय इम पिण्डं ददाम्यहम्
ajātadantā ye kecidye ca garbhe prapīḍitāḥ teṣāmuddharaṇārthāya ima piṇḍaṁ dadāmyaham
'Whoever died before their teeth had grown, and those who perished, afflicted, within the womb — for their deliverance, I offer this pinda.'
Verse 6 (garuda.1.85.6)
बन्धुवर्गाश्च ये केचिन्नामगोत्रविवर्जिताः । स्वगोत्रे परगोत्रे वा गतिर्येषां न विद्यते । तेषामुद्धरणार्थाय इम पिण्डं ददाम्यहम्
bandhuvargāśca ye kecinnāmagotravivarjitāḥ svagotre paragotre vā gatiryeṣāṁ na vidyate teṣāmuddharaṇārthāya ima piṇḍaṁ dadāmyaham
'And whoever among my kinsfolk are without known name or lineage, whether of my own gotra or another's, for whom no destination is known — for their deliverance, I offer this pinda.'
Verse 7 (garuda.1.85.7)
उद्बन्धनमृता ये च विषशस्रहताश्च ये । आत्मोपघातिनो ये च तेभ्यः पिण्डं ददाम्यहम्
udbandhanamṛtā ye ca viṣaśasrahatāśca ye ātmopaghātino ye ca tebhyaḥ piṇḍaṁ dadāmyaham
'Those who died by hanging, those slain by poison or weapon, and those who took their own lives — to them I offer this pinda.'
Verse 8 (garuda.1.85.8)
अग्निदाहे मृता ये च सिंहव्याघ्रहताश्चये । दंष्ट्रिभिः श्रृङ्गिभिर्वापि तेषां पिण्डं ददाम्यहम्
agnidāhe mṛtā ye ca siṁhavyāghrahatāścaye daṁṣṭribhiḥ śrṛṅgibhirvāpi teṣāṁ piṇḍaṁ dadāmyaham
'Those who died by burning in fire, and those slain by lion or tiger, or by tusked or horned beasts — to them I offer this pinda.'
Verse 9 (garuda.1.85.9)
अग्निदग्धाश्च ये केचिन्नाग्निदग्धास्तथापरे । विद्युच्चौरहता ये च तेभ्यः पिण्डं ददाम्यहम्
agnidagdhāśca ye kecinnāgnidagdhāstathāpare vidyuccaurahatā ye ca tebhyaḥ piṇḍaṁ dadāmyaham
'Whoever were consumed by fire, and others likewise who were not, and those slain by lightning or by thieves — to them I offer this pinda.'
Verse 10 (garuda.1.85.10)
रौरवे चान्धतामिस्त्रे कालसूत्रे च ये गताः । तेषामुद्धरणार्थाय इमं पिण्डं ददाम्यहम्
raurave cāndhatāmistre kālasūtre ca ye gatāḥ teṣāmuddharaṇārthāya imaṁ piṇḍaṁ dadāmyaham
'And those who have gone to the hells of Raurava, Andhatamisra, and Kalasutra — for their deliverance, I offer this pinda.'
Verse 11 (garuda.1.85.11)
असिपत्रवने घोरे कुम्भीपाके च ये गताः । तेषामुद्धरणार्थाय इमं पिण्डं ददाम्यहम्
asipatravane ghore kumbhīpāke ca ye gatāḥ teṣāmuddharaṇārthāya imaṁ piṇḍaṁ dadāmyaham
'And those who have gone to the terrible Asipatravana and to Kumbhipaka — for their deliverance, I offer this pinda.'
Verse 12 (garuda.1.85.12)
अन्येषां यातना स्थानां प्रेतलोकनिवासिनाम् । तेषामुद्धरणार्थाय इमं पिण्डं ददाम्यहम्
anyeṣāṁ yātanā sthānāṁ pretalokanivāsinām teṣāmuddharaṇārthāya imaṁ piṇḍaṁ dadāmyaham
'And for those dwelling in the other places of torment in the world of the pretas — for their deliverance, I offer this pinda.'
Verse 13 (garuda.1.85.13)
पुशुयोनिं गता ये च पक्षिकीटसरीसृपाः । अथवा वृक्षयोनि स्थास्तेभ्यः पिण्डं ददाम्यहम्
puśuyoniṁ gatā ye ca pakṣikīṭasarīsṛpāḥ athavā vṛkṣayoni sthāstebhyaḥ piṇḍaṁ dadāmyaham
'Those who have entered the wombs of animals — birds, insects, reptiles — or who abide in the state of trees — to them I offer this pinda.'
Verse 14 (garuda.1.85.14)
असंख्ययातनासंस्था ये नीता यमशासनैः । तेषामुद्धरणार्थाय इमं पिंडं ददाम्यहम्
asaṁkhyayātanāsaṁsthā ye nītā yamaśāsanaiḥ teṣāmuddharaṇārthāya imaṁ piṁḍaṁ dadāmyaham
'Those established in countless torments, led there by the decrees of Yama — for their deliverance, I offer this pinda.'
Verse 15 (garuda.1.85.15)
जात्यन्तरसहस्त्रेषु भ्रमन्ति स्वेन कर्मणा । मानुष्यं दुर्लभं येषां तेभ्यः पिण्डं ददाम्यहम्
jātyantarasahastreṣu bhramanti svena karmaṇā mānuṣyaṁ durlabhaṁ yeṣāṁ tebhyaḥ piṇḍaṁ dadāmyaham
'Those who wander through a thousand different births by their own karma, for whom a human birth is hard to attain — to them I offer this pinda.'
Verse 16 (garuda.1.85.16)
ये बान्धवाऽबान्धवा वा येऽन्यजन्मनि बान्धवाः । ते सर्वेतृप्तिमायान्तु पिण्डदानेन सर्वदा
ye bāndhavā'bāndhavā vā ye'nyajanmani bāndhavāḥ te sarvetṛptimāyāntu piṇḍadānena sarvadā
'Whoever are kinsmen or not kinsmen, or were kinsmen in another birth — may all of them, through this offering of pinda, come always to satisfaction.'
Verse 17 (garuda.1.85.17)
ये केचित्प्रेतरूपेण वर्त्तन्ते पितरो मम । ते सर्वे तृप्तिमायान्तु पिण्डदानेन सर्वदा
ye kecitpretarūpeṇa varttante pitaro mama te sarve tṛptimāyāntu piṇḍadānena sarvadā
'Whatever ancestors of mine remain in the form of pretas — may all of them, through this offering of pinda, come always to satisfaction.'
Verse 18 (garuda.1.85.18)
ये मे पितृकुले जाताः कुले मातुस्तथैव च । गुरुश्वशुरबन्धूनां ये चान्ये बान्धवा मृताः
ye me pitṛkule jātāḥ kule mātustathaiva ca guruśvaśurabandhūnāṁ ye cānye bāndhavā mṛtāḥ
'Those born in the lineage of my father, and likewise in the lineage of my mother; those of my teacher's, my father-in-law's, and other kinsmen who have died —'
Verse 19 (garuda.1.85.19)
ये मे कुले लुप्तपिण्डाः पुत्त्रदारविवर्जिताः । क्रियालो पहता ये च जात्यन्धाः पङ्गवस्तथा
ye me kule luptapiṇḍāḥ puttradāravivarjitāḥ kriyālo pahatā ye ca jātyandhāḥ paṅgavastathā
'those in my family whose pinda-rites have lapsed, those without son or wife, those harmed by the neglect of due rites, those born blind, and the lame —'
Verse 20 (garuda.1.85.20)
विरूपा आमगर्भाश्च ज्ञाताज्ञाताः कुले मम । तेषां पिण्डं मया दत्तमक्षय्यमुपतिष्ठताम्
virūpā āmagarbhāśca jñātājñātāḥ kule mama teṣāṁ piṇḍaṁ mayā dattamakṣayyamupatiṣṭhatām
'the deformed, those born from an unformed womb, whether known or unknown to me in my family — may this pinda, given by me, stand ready for all of them, imperishable.'
Verse 21 (garuda.1.85.21)
साक्षिणः सन्तु मे देवा ब्रह्मेशानादयस्तथा । मया गयां समासाद्य पितॄणां निष्कृतिः कृता
sākṣiṇaḥ santu me devā brahmeśānādayastathā mayā gayāṁ samāsādya pitṝṇāṁ niṣkṛtiḥ kṛtā
'Let the gods — Brahma, Ishana, and the others — be my witnesses that, having come to Gaya, I have made full atonement for my ancestors.'
Verse 22 (garuda.1.85.22)
आगतोऽहं गयां देव ! पितृकार्य्ये गदाधर । तन्मे साक्षी भवत्वद्य अनृणोऽहमृणत्रयात्
āgato'haṁ gayāṁ deva ! pitṛkāryye gadādhara tanme sākṣī bhavatvadya anṛṇo'hamṛṇatrayāt
'O God Gadadhara, I have come to Gaya for the sake of the rites of my ancestors; be my witness today that I am freed from the three debts.'
Verse 23 (garuda.1.85.23)
महानदी ब्रह्मसरोऽक्षयो वटः प्रभासमुद्यन्तमहो ? गयाशिरः । सरस्वतीधर्मकधेनुपृष्ठा एते कुरुक्षेत्रगता गयायाम्
mahānadī brahmasaro'kṣayo vaṭaḥ prabhāsamudyantamaho ? gayāśiraḥ sarasvatīdharmakadhenupṛṣṭhā ete kurukṣetragatā gayāyām
The Mahanadi, the lake of Brahma, the imperishable banyan, Prabhasa, the rising [splendor] (reading uncertain here), Gayashiras, Sarasvati, Dharmaka, and Dhenuprishtha — these, present at Kurukshetra, are present in Gaya as well.
