Purvakhanda — Acharakanda · Chapter 89
The Hymn to the Ancestors Composed by Ruchi
Verse 1 (garuda.1.89.1)
sūta uvāca pṛṣṭaḥ krauñcukinovāca mārkaṇḍeyaḥ punaśca tam sa tena pitṛvākyane bhṛśamudvagnamānasaḥ
Suta said: Asked by Krounchuki, Markandeya spoke to him further. Ruchi's mind had become greatly agitated by those words of his ancestors.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.89.2)
kanyābhilāṣī viprarṣiḥ paribabhrāma medinīm kanyāmalabhamāno'sau pitṛvākyena dīpitaḥ cintāmavāpa mahītamatīvodvignamānasaḥ
The brahmin-sage, desiring a bride, wandered over the earth. Not obtaining a bride, and inflamed by his ancestors' words, he fell into deep anxiety, his mind exceedingly troubled.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.89.3)
kiṁ karomi kva gacchāmi kathaṁ me dārasaṁgrahaḥ kṣipraṁ bhavenmatpitṝṇāṁ mamābhyudayakārakam
'What shall I do? Where shall I go? How may my marriage come about quickly, bringing prosperity to my ancestors and to me?'
Verse 4 (garuda.1.89.4)
iti cintayatastasyamatirjātā mahātmanaḥ tapasārādhayāmyenaṁ brahmāṇaṁ kamalodbhavam
As he thought thus, the resolve arose in that great soul: 'I shall propitiate, through austerity, Brahma, born of the lotus.'
Verse 5 (garuda.1.89.5)
tato varṣaśataṁ divyaṁ tapastepe mahāmanāḥ tatra sthitaściraṁ kālaṁ vaneṣu niyamasthitaḥ ārādhanāya sa tadā paraṁ niyamamāsthitaḥ
Then that great-minded one performed austerity for a hundred divine years. Remaining in the forest, disciplined, for a long time, he undertook the highest observance for that worship.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.89.6)
tataḥ pradarśayāmāsa brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ uvācātha prasanno'smītyucyatāmabhivāñchitam
Then Brahma, grandfather of the worlds, showed himself, and pleased, said: 'I am pleased — speak your desired wish.'
Verse 7 (garuda.1.89.7)
tato'sau praṇipatyāha brahmāṇaṁ jagato gatim pitṝṇāṁ vacanāttena yatkarttumabhivāñchitam
Then he bowed and told Brahma, the refuge of the world, that which, by his ancestors' words, he desired to accomplish.
Verse 8 (garuda.1.89.8)

Brahma said: 'You shall become a Prajapati; creatures are to be created by you. O brahmin, having created creatures and begotten sons and performed the due rites —'
Verse 9 (garuda.1.89.9)
kṛtvā kṛtādhikārastvaṁ tataḥ siddhimavāpyasi satvaṁ yathoktaṁ pitṛbhiḥ kuru dāraparigraham
'having thus fulfilled your office, you shall then attain accomplishment. Do as your ancestors have said — take a wife.'
Verse 10 (garuda.1.89.10)
kāmaṁ cemamabhidhyāya kriyatāṁ pitṛpūjanam ta eva tuṣṭāḥ pitaraḥ pradāsyanti tavepsitam patnīṁ sutāṁśca santuṣṭāḥ kiṁ na dadyuḥ pitāmahāḥ
'And keeping this wish in mind, perform the worship of your ancestors; those very ancestors, pleased, will grant your desire. Being satisfied, what would the forefathers not give — a wife, and sons?'
Verse 11 (garuda.1.89.11)
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ityṛṣirvacanaṁ śrutvā brahmaṇo'vyaktajanmanaḥ nadyā vivikte puline cakāra pitṛtarpaṇam
Markandeya said: Having heard these words of Brahma, whose birth is unmanifest, the sage performed the tarpana of his ancestors on a secluded riverbank.
Verse 12 (garuda.1.89.12)
tuṣṭāva ca pitṝnvipraḥ stavairebhirathādṛtaḥ ekāgraprayato bhūtvā bhaktinamrātmakandharaḥ
And with reverence, single-minded and controlled, his neck bowed in devotion, that brahmin praised the ancestors with these hymns —
