Chapter 19All chaptersChapter 21

Verse 1 (garuda.2.20.1)

garuḍa uvāca | ye kecitpretarūpeṇa kutra vāsaṁ labhanti te | pretalokādvinirmuktāḥ kathaṁ kutra vrajanti te

Garuda said: Those beings who exist in the form of a preta — where do they find their dwelling? And, once released from the world of the pretas, how and where do they go?

Verse 2 (garuda.2.20.2)

caturyuktāśīti lakṣairnarakaiḥ paryupāsitāḥ | yamena rakṣitāstatra bhūtaiścaiva sahasraśaḥ

Surrounded by the eighty-four hundred thousand hells, guarded there by Yama, and together with thousands of spirits,

Verse 3 (garuda.2.20.3)

vicaranti kathaṁ loke narakācca vinirgatāḥ | garuḍodīritaṁ śrutvā lakṣmīnātho'bravīdidam

how do those who have emerged from hell wander through the world?' Hearing this speech of Garuda, the Lord of Lakshmi spoke thus.

Verse 4 (garuda.2.20.4)

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca | pakṣirāja śṛṇuṣva tvaṁ yatra pretāścaranti vai | parārthadāragrahaṇāccha (ba) lāddrohānniśācarāḥ

Shri Krishna said: O king of birds, hear where the pretas wander. Through the seizure of another's wife, through forcible betrayal — becoming night-wanderers,

Verse 5 (garuda.2.20.5)

tathaiva sarvapāpiṣṭhaḥ svātmajānveṣaṇe ratāḥ | vicarantyaśarīrāste kṣuptipāsārditā bhṛśam

and, likewise, the very lowest of all sinners, intent on searching for their own children, wander bodiless, sorely tormented by hunger and thirst.

Verse 6 (garuda.2.20.6)

bandīgṛhavi nirmuktā yebhyo naśyanti jantavaḥ | te vyavasyanti ca pretā vadhopāyaṁ ca bandhuṣu

Those through whose hands, once released from prison, creatures perish — such pretas too dwell upon devising the destruction of their own kinsmen.

Verse 7 (garuda.2.20.7)

pitṛdvadārāṇi rundhanti tanmārgocchedakāstathā | pitṛbhā gānvigṛhṇanti pānthebhyastaskarā iva

Those who obstruct the wives of the ancestors, those who are destroyers of the road, seize the ancestors' portion just as thieves seize from travelers.

Verse 8 (garuda.2.20.8)

svaṁ veśma punarāgatya mitrasthāne viśanti te | tatra sthitā nirīkṣante rogaśokādibandhanāḥ

Returning to their own house, they enter into the place of a friend; stationed there, they watch over the bonds of disease, grief, and the like,

Verse 9 (garuda.2.20.9)

pīḍayanti jvarībhūya ekāntaramiṣeṇa tu | tṛtīyakajvarā bhūtvā śītavātādipīḍayā

and, becoming fever, torment people under the guise of an alternate-day fever; in the form of a tertian fever too, through the pain of chills and wind,

Verse 10 (garuda.2.20.10)

anyāṁśca vividhānrogāñchiro'rtiṁ ca viṣūcikām | cinta yanti sadā teṣāmucchiṣṭādisthalasthitāḥ

and in the form of various other ailments, headache, and cholera — dwelling in places of leftover food and the like, they ever devise harm.

Verse 11 (garuda.2.20.11)

ātmajānāṁ chalāllokā bhūtasaṁghaiśca rakṣitāḥ | pibanti te ca pānīyaṁ bhojanocchiṣṭayojitam

By deceit, dwelling among their own children's people, guarded by hosts of spirits, they drink water mixed with leftover food.

Verse 12 (garuda.2.20.12)

evaṁ pretāḥ pravartante nānādoṣairvikarmiṇaḥ

Thus, laden with manifold faults, the pretas proceed, engaged in evil deeds.

Verse 13 (garuda.2.20.13)

garuḍa uvāca | kathaṁ kurvanti te pretāḥ kena rūpeṇa kasya kim | jñāyate kena vidhinā jalpanti na vadanti vā

Garuda said: How do those pretas perform these acts, in what form, and to whom do they do what harm? By what means is this known? Do they speak, or do they not speak?

Verse 14 (garuda.2.20.14)

enaṁ chindhi manomohaṁ mama cedicchasi priyam | kalikāle hṛṣīkeśa pretatvaṁ jāyate bahu

Sever this delusion of my mind, if you wish to show kindness to me, your beloved. O Hrishikesha, in the Kali Yuga the state of a preta arises in great abundance.

Verse 15 (garuda.2.20.15)

śrīviṣṇuruvāca | svakulaṁ pīḍayetpetaḥ paracchidreṇa pīḍayet | jīvansa dṛśyate snehī mṛto duṣṭatvamāpnuyāt

The man fallen from all proper observances, the unbeliever, the reviler of dharma, one devoted to falsehood — he alone is afflicted by pretas. O Tarkshya, in the Kali Yuga, it is he devoted to impure conduct who attains the state of a preta.

Through an improperly performed rite too, a preta given to evil deeds arises — through evil company at that time, and also without the vrishotsarga,

Verse 43 (garuda.2.20.43)

Those who exist in the form of pretas, with distorted faces and eyes, terrible and hideous in form, no longer recognize their own gotra, their sons and daughters, their parents, their brother's wife, or their daughter-in-law; assuming whatever form they wish, wandering restlessly, speaking as they please, crying 'alas, what misery!', longing to partake once more, fallen under the sway of fate, they remain forever recalling the deeds of their own past.
