The Description of Various Gifts
Verse 1 (garuda.2.30.1)
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच । शृणु तार्क्ष्य परं गुह्यं दानानां दानमुत्तमम् । परमं सर्वदानानां परं गोप्यं दिवौकसाम्
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca śṛṇu tārkṣya paraṁ guhyaṁ dānānāṁ dānamuttamam paramaṁ sarvadānānāṁ paraṁ gopyaṁ divaukasām
Shri Krishna said: "Listen, O Tarkshya, to the supreme secret — the best among gifts, the highest of all gifts, the deepest mystery of the gods."
Verse 2 (garuda.2.30.2)
देयमेकं महादानं कार्पासं चोत्तमोत्तमम् । येन दत्तेन प्रीयन्ते भूर्भुवः स्वरिति क्रमात्
deyamekaṁ mahādānaṁ kārpāsaṁ cottamottamam yena dattena prīyante bhūrbhuvaḥ svariti kramāt
"One great gift must be given: cotton, the very best of gifts. By its giving the three worlds — Bhu, Bhuvah, and Svah — are pleased in due order."
Verse 3 (garuda.2.30.3)
ब्रह्माद्या देवताः सर्वाः कार्याच्च प्रीतिमाप्नुयुः । देयमेतन्महादानं प्रेतोद्धरणहेतवे
brahmādyā devatāḥ sarvāḥ kāryācca prītimāpnuyuḥ deyametanmahādānaṁ pretoddharaṇahetave
"Brahma and all the other gods attain satisfaction through this act; this great gift should be given for the deliverance of the preta."
Verse 4 (garuda.2.30.4)
चिरं वसेद्रुद्रलोके ततो राजा भवेदिह । रूपवान्सुभगो वाग्मी श्रीमानतुल विक्रमः । यमलोकं विनिर्जित्य स्वर्गं ताक्ष्य स गच्छति
ciraṁ vasedrudraloke tato rājā bhavediha rūpavānsubhago vāgmī śrīmānatula vikramaḥ yamalokaṁ vinirjitya svargaṁ tākṣya sa gacchati
"He dwells long in Rudra's world, then becomes a king here — handsome, fortunate, eloquent, glorious, of matchless valor. Passing beyond Yama's realm, O Tarkshya, he goes to heaven."
Verse 5 (garuda.2.30.5)
गां तिलांश्च क्षितं हेम यो ददाति द्विजन्मने । तस्य जन्मार्जिर्त पापं तत्क्षणादेवनश्यति
gāṁ tilāṁśca kṣitaṁ hema yo dadāti dvijanmane tasya janmārjirta pāpaṁ tatkṣaṇādevanaśyati
"Whoever gives a cow, sesame, or gold-worthy land to a twice-born, his sin accumulated across many births is destroyed that very instant."
Verse 6 (garuda.2.30.6)
तिला गावो महादानं महापातकनाशनम् । तद्द्वयं दीयते विप्रे नान्यवर्णे कदाचन
tilā gāvo mahādānaṁ mahāpātakanāśanam taddvayaṁ dīyate vipre nānyavarṇe kadācana
"Sesame and cows are a great gift, destroying the greatest sins; these two should be given to a brahmin alone, never to another varna."
Verse 7 (garuda.2.30.7)
कल्पितं दीयते दानं तिला गावश्चमेदिनी । अन्येषु नैव वर्णेषु पोष्यवर्गे कदाचन
kalpitaṁ dīyate dānaṁ tilā gāvaścamedinī anyeṣu naiva varṇeṣu poṣyavarge kadācana
"The prescribed gifts are sesame, cows, and land; these should never be given to other varnas or to one's dependents."
Verse 8 (garuda.2.30.8)
पोष्यवर्गे तथा स्त्रीषु दानं देयमकल्पितम् । आतुरे वोपरागे च द्वयं दानं विशिष्यते । आतुरे दीयते दानं तत्काले चोपतिष्ठति
poṣyavarge tathā strīṣu dānaṁ deyamakalpitam āture voparāge ca dvayaṁ dānaṁ viśiṣyate āture dīyate dānaṁ tatkāle copatiṣṭhati
"But to dependents and to women, an ordinary, unprescribed gift may be given. At the time of fatal illness or during an eclipse, these gifts are especially distinguished; a gift given in fatal illness becomes fruitful that very moment."
Verse 9 (garuda.2.30.9)
जीवतस्तु पुनर्दत्तमुपतिष्ठत्यसंस्कृतम् । सत्यंसत्यं पुनः सत्यं यद्दत्तं विकलेन्द्रिये
jīvatastu punardattamupatiṣṭhatyasaṁskṛtam satyaṁsatyaṁ punaḥ satyaṁ yaddattaṁ vikalendriye
"But a gift given again while one is still living remains incomplete. Truly, truly, and truly again — what is given as the senses fail is the true gift."
Verse 10 (garuda.2.30.10)
यच्चानु मोदते पुत्रस्तच्च दानमनन्तकम् । अतो दद्यात्स पुत्रो वा यावज्जीवत्ससौ चिरम् । अतिवाहस्तथा प्रेतो भोगांश्च लभते यतः
yaccānu modate putrastacca dānamanantakam ato dadyātsa putro vā yāvajjīvatsasau ciram ativāhastathā preto bhogāṁśca labhate yataḥ
"And whatever gift a son afterward confirms becomes endlessly fruitful; therefore the son should give it, so that the deceased may thrive long; thus the ativaha, and then the preta, come to receive their due enjoyments."
Verse 11 (garuda.2.30.11)
अस्वस्था तुरकाले तु देहपाते क्षितिस्थिते । देहे तथातिवाहस्य परतः प्रीणनं भवेत्
asvasthā turakāle tu dehapāte kṣitisthite dehe tathātivāhasya parataḥ prīṇanaṁ bhavet
"In fatal illness, at the moment the body falls, and even while lying upon the ground, this gift brings satisfaction to the ativaha's form in the world beyond."
Verse 12 (garuda.2.30.12)
पङ्गावन्धे च काणे च ह्यर्धोन्मीलितलोचने । तिलेषु दर्भान्संस्तीर्य दानमुक्तं तदक्षयम्
paṅgāvandhe ca kāṇe ca hyardhonmīlitalocane tileṣu darbhānsaṁstīrya dānamuktaṁ tadakṣayam
"For the lame, the blind, the one-eyed, or one whose eyes are half-closed — the gift given after spreading darbha upon sesame is declared imperishable."
Verse 13 (garuda.2.30.13)
तिला लौहं हिरण्यञ्च कार्पासं लवणं तथा । सप्तधान्यं क्षितिर्गाव एकैकं पावनं स्मृतम्
tilā lauhaṁ hiraṇyañca kārpāsaṁ lavaṇaṁ tathā saptadhānyaṁ kṣitirgāva ekaikaṁ pāvanaṁ smṛtam
"Sesame, iron, gold, cotton, salt, the seven grains, land, and cows — each one of these is held to be purifying."
Verse 14 (garuda.2.30.14)
लोहदानाद्यमस्तुष्येद्धर्म राजस्तिलार्पणात् । लवणे दीयमाने तु न भयं विद्यते यमात्
lohadānādyamastuṣyeddharma rājastilārpaṇāt lavaṇe dīyamāne tu na bhayaṁ vidyate yamāt
"By the gift of iron, Yama is pleased; by the offering of sesame, the king of dharma; and when salt is given, there is no fear at all of Yama."
Verse 15 (garuda.2.30.15)
कर्पासस्य तु दानेन न भूतेभ्यो भयं भवेत् । तारयन्ति नरं गावस्त्रिविधाश्चैव पातकात्
karpāsasya tu dānena na bhūtebhyo bhayaṁ bhavet tārayanti naraṁ gāvastrividhāścaiva pātakāt
"By the gift of cotton there is no fear of evil spirits; and cows given on the three occasions carry a man across from his sins."
Verse 16 (garuda.2.30.16)
हेमदानात्सुखं स्वर्गे भूमिदानान्नृपो भवेत् । हेमभूमिप्रदानाच्च न पीडा नरके भवेत्
hemadānātsukhaṁ svarge bhūmidānānnṛpo bhavet hemabhūmipradānācca na pīḍā narake bhavet
"By the gift of gold, happiness in heaven; by the gift of land, one becomes a king; and by the gift of gold and land together, there is no torment in hell."
Verse 17 (garuda.2.30.17)
सर्वेऽपि यमदूताश्च यमरूपा विभीषणाः । सर्वे ते वरदा यान्ति सप्तधान्येन प्रीणिताः
sarve'pi yamadūtāśca yamarūpā vibhīṣaṇāḥ sarve te varadā yānti saptadhānyena prīṇitāḥ
"All the messengers of Yama, fearsome in his very form, become granters of boons when they are pleased by the gift of the seven grains."
Verse 18 (garuda.2.30.18)
विष्णोः स्मरणमात्रेण प्राप्यते परमा गतिः । एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं मर्त्यैर्या गतिराप्यते
viṣṇoḥ smaraṇamātreṇa prāpyate paramā gatiḥ etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ martyairyā gatirāpyate
"By the mere remembrance of Vishnu, the highest state is attained. All this have I told you — the destiny that mortals may attain."
Verse 19 (garuda.2.30.19)
तस्मात्पुत्रं प्रशंसन्ति ददाति पितुराज्ञया । भूमिष्ठं पितरं दृष्ट्वा ह्यर्धोन्मीलितलोचनम्
tasmātputraṁ praśaṁsanti dadāti piturājñayā bhūmiṣṭhaṁ pitaraṁ dṛṣṭvā hyardhonmīlitalocanam
"Therefore they praise the son who, seeing his father lying on the ground with eyes half-closed, gives the gift at his father's command."
Verse 20 (garuda.2.30.20)
तस्मिन् काले सुतो यस्तु सर्वदानानि दापयेत् । गयाश्राद्धाद्विशिष्येत स पुत्रः कुलनन्दनः
tasmin kāle suto yastu sarvadānāni dāpayet gayāśrāddhādviśiṣyeta sa putraḥ kulanandanaḥ
"The son who, at that time, causes all these gifts to be given — that son, the delight of his family, surpasses even the shraddha performed at Gaya."
Verse 21 (garuda.2.30.21)
स्वस्थानाच्चलितश्चासौ विकलस्य पितुस्तदा । पुत्रैर्यत्नेन कर्तव्या पितरं तारयन्ति ते
svasthānāccalitaścāsau vikalasya pitustadā putrairyatnena kartavyā pitaraṁ tārayanti te
"For the failing father, moved from his usual place, the sons should have this gift made with diligence — thereby they save the father."
Verse 22 (garuda.2.30.22)
किं दत्तैर्बहुभिर्दानैः पितुरन्त्येष्टिमाचरेत् । अश्वमेधो महायज्ञः कलां नार्हति षोडशीम्
kiṁ dattairbahubhirdānaiḥ piturantyeṣṭimācaret aśvamedho mahāyajñaḥ kalāṁ nārhati ṣoḍaśīm
"What use are many other gifts? One should perform the father's final rites; even the great sacrifice of the horse is not worth a sixteenth part of it."
Verse 23 (garuda.2.30.23)
धर्मात्मा स नु पुत्रो वैदेवैरपि सुपूज्यते । दापयेद्यस्तु दानानि ह्यातुरं पितरं भुवि
dharmātmā sa nu putro vaidevairapi supūjyate dāpayedyastu dānāni hyāturaṁ pitaraṁ bhuvi
"That righteous son is duly honored even by the gods, who causes these gifts to be given for his father lying stricken upon the earth."
Verse 24 (garuda.2.30.24)
लोहदानञ्च दातव्यं भूमियुक्तेन पाणिना । यमं भीमञ्च नाप्नोति न गच्छेत्तस्य वेश्मनि
lohadānañca dātavyaṁ bhūmiyuktena pāṇinā yamaṁ bhīmañca nāpnoti na gacchettasya veśmani
"The gift of iron should be given with a hand touching the ground; by this, terrible Yama is not encountered, nor need one go to his abode."
Verse 25 (garuda.2.30.25)
कुठारो मुसलो दण्डः खड्गश्च च्छुरिका तथा । एतानि यमहस्तेषु दृश्यानि पापकर्मिणाम्
kuṭhāro musalo daṇḍaḥ khaḍgaśca cchurikā tathā etāni yamahasteṣu dṛśyāni pāpakarmiṇām
"The axe, the pestle, the club, the sword, and the knife — these are seen in Yama's hands for those of sinful deeds."
Verse 26 (garuda.2.30.26)
तस्माल्लोहस्य दानन्तु ब्राह्मणायातुरो ददेत् । यमायुधानां सन्तुष्ट्यै दानमेतदुदाहृतम्
tasmāllohasya dānantu brāhmaṇāyāturo dadet yamāyudhānāṁ santuṣṭyai dānametadudāhṛtam
"Therefore the dying man should give the gift of iron to a brahmin; this gift is prescribed for the pacifying of Yama's weapons."
Verse 27 (garuda.2.30.27)
गर्भस्थाः शिशवो ये च युवानः स्थविरास्तथा । एभिर्दानविशेषैस्तु निर्दहेयुः स्वपातकम्
garbhasthāḥ śiśavo ye ca yuvānaḥ sthavirāstathā ebhirdānaviśeṣaistu nirdaheyuḥ svapātakam
"Those still in the womb, infants, the young, and the old alike — by these special gifts they may burn away their own sins."
Verse 28 (garuda.2.30.28)
छुरिणः श्यामशबलौ षण्डामर्का उदुम्बराः । शबला श्यामदूता ये लोहदानेन प्रीणिताः
churiṇaḥ śyāmaśabalau ṣaṇḍāmarkā udumbarāḥ śabalā śyāmadūtā ye lohadānena prīṇitāḥ
"The knife-bearers, the dark and the dappled ones, the fierce attendants and the fig-spirits, the dappled and dark messengers — all these fearsome servants of Yama are pleased by the gift of iron."
Verse 29 (garuda.2.30.29)
पुत्राः पौत्रास्तथा बन्धुः सगोत्राः सुहहृदस्तथा । ददते नातुरे दानं ब्रह्मघ्नैस्तु समा हि ते
putrāḥ pautrāstathā bandhuḥ sagotrāḥ suhahṛdastathā dadate nāture dānaṁ brahmaghnaistu samā hi te
"Sons, grandsons, kinsmen, those of the same gotra, and friends — those who do not have this gift made for the dying are indeed equal to slayers of a brahmin."
Verse 30 (garuda.2.30.30)
पञ्चत्वे भूमियुक्तस्य शृणु तस्य च या गतिः । अतिवाहः पुनः प्रेतोवर्षोर्ध्वं सुकृतं लभेत्
pañcatve bhūmiyuktasya śṛṇu tasya ca yā gatiḥ ativāhaḥ punaḥ pretovarṣordhvaṁ sukṛtaṁ labhet
"Hear now the destiny of one who lies on the ground at death — the ativaha becomes again a preta; after a year he receives the fruit of his merit."
Verse 31 (garuda.2.30.31)
अग्नित्रयं त्रयो लोकास्त्रयो वेदास्त्रयोऽमराः । कालत्रयं त्रिसन्ध्यं च त्रयो वर्णास्त्रिशक्तयः
agnitrayaṁ trayo lokāstrayo vedāstrayo'marāḥ kālatrayaṁ trisandhyaṁ ca trayo varṇāstriśaktayaḥ
"The three fires, the three worlds, the three Vedas, the three immortal ones, the three times, the two twilights making three, the three [upper] varnas, and the three powers —"
Verse 32 (garuda.2.30.32)
पादादूर्ध्वं कटिं यावत्तावद्ब्रह्याधितिष्ठति । ग्रीवां यावद्धरिर्नाभेः शरीरे मनुजस्य च
pādādūrdhvaṁ kaṭiṁ yāvattāvadbrahyādhitiṣṭhati grīvāṁ yāvaddharirnābheḥ śarīre manujasya ca
"— from the feet up to the waist, Brahma presides; from the waist up to the neck, within the human body, Vishnu presides;"
Verse 33 (garuda.2.30.33)
मस्तके तिष्ठतीशानो व्यक्ताव्यक्तो महेश्वरः । एकमूर्तेस्त्रयो भागा ब्रह्मा विष्णुहेश्वराः
mastake tiṣṭhatīśāno vyaktāvyakto maheśvaraḥ ekamūrtestrayo bhāgā brahmā viṣṇuheśvarāḥ
"in the head resides Ishana, the great Lord, both manifest and unmanifest. Of one single form there are three parts: Brahma, Vishnu, and Ishvara."
Verse 34 (garuda.2.30.34)
अहं प्राणः शरीरस्थो भूतग्रामचतुष्टये । धर्माधर्मे मतिं दद्यात्सुखदुःखे कृताकृते
ahaṁ prāṇaḥ śarīrastho bhūtagrāmacatuṣṭaye dharmādharme matiṁ dadyātsukhaduḥkhe kṛtākṛte
"'I am the life-breath dwelling in the body, in the fourfold host of beings; I grant the mind's inclination toward dharma and adharma, toward pleasure and pain, toward deeds done and undone.'"
Verse 35 (garuda.2.30.35)
जन्तोर्वुद्धिं समास्थाय पूर्वमर्माधिवासिताम् । अहमेव तथा जीवान्प्रेरयामि च कर्मसु । स्वर्गं च नरकं मोक्षं प्रयान्ति प्राणिनो ध्रुवम्
jantorvuddhiṁ samāsthāya pūrvamarmādhivāsitām ahameva tathā jīvānprerayāmi ca karmasu svargaṁ ca narakaṁ mokṣaṁ prayānti prāṇino dhruvam
"'Entering the understanding of a being, joined to the impressions shaped by its past deeds, I alone impel creatures toward their actions. Thus beings surely go on to heaven, hell, or liberation.'"
Verse 36 (garuda.2.30.36)
स्वर्गस्थं नरकस्थं वा श्राद्धे वाप्यायनं भवेत् । तस्माच्छ्राद्धानि कुर्वीत त्रिविधानि विचक्षणः
svargasthaṁ narakasthaṁ vā śrāddhe vāpyāyanaṁ bhavet tasmācchrāddhāni kurvīta trividhāni vicakṣaṇaḥ
"Whether he abides in heaven or in hell, satisfaction comes to him through shraddha; therefore the wise should perform the three kinds of shraddha."
Verse 37 (garuda.2.30.37)
मत्स्यं कर्मं च वाराहं नारसिंहञ्च वामनम् । रामं रामं च कृष्णं च बुद्धं चैव सकल्किनम् । एतानि दश नामानि स्मर्तव्यानि सदा बुधैः
matsyaṁ karmaṁ ca vārāhaṁ nārasiṁhañca vāmanam rāmaṁ rāmaṁ ca kṛṣṇaṁ ca buddhaṁ caiva sakalkinam etāni daśa nāmāni smartavyāni sadā budhaiḥ
"Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, and Vamana; Rama the axe-wielder and Rama son of Dasharatha; Krishna, and Buddha, together with Kalki — these ten names the wise should ever remember."
Verse 38 (garuda.2.30.38)
स्वर्गं जीवाः सुखं यान्ति च्युताः स्वर्गाच्च मानवाः । लब्ध्वा सुखं च वित्तं च दयादाक्षिण्यसंयुताः । पुत्रपौत्रैर्धनैराढ्या जीवेयुः शरदां शतम्
svargaṁ jīvāḥ sukhaṁ yānti cyutāḥ svargācca mānavāḥ labdhvā sukhaṁ ca vittaṁ ca dayādākṣiṇyasaṁyutāḥ putrapautrairdhanairāḍhyā jīveyuḥ śaradāṁ śatam
"Souls go happily to heaven; and humans fallen from heaven, having gained happiness and wealth and endowed with compassion and generosity, rich in sons, grandsons, and riches, may they live a hundred autumns."
Verse 39 (garuda.2.30.39)
आतुरे च ददेद्दानं विष्णुपूजाञ्च कारयेत् । अष्टाक्षरं तथा मन्त्रं जपेद्वा द्वादशाक्षरम्
āture ca dadeddānaṁ viṣṇupūjāñca kārayet aṣṭākṣaraṁ tathā mantraṁ japedvā dvādaśākṣaram
"For the dying one, gifts should be given and the worship of Vishnu performed; one should recite the eight-syllable mantra, or the twelve-syllable one."
Verse 40 (garuda.2.30.40)
पूजयेच्छुक्लपुष्पैश्च नैवेद्यैर्घृतपाचितैः । तथा गन्धैश्च धूपैश्च श्रुतिस्मृतिमनूदितैः
pūjayecchuklapuṣpaiśca naivedyairghṛtapācitaiḥ tathā gandhaiśca dhūpaiśca śrutismṛtimanūditaiḥ
"He should be worshipped with white flowers, with offerings cooked in ghee, and with the scents and incense prescribed by shruti and smriti."
Verse 41 (garuda.2.30.41)
विष्णुर्माता पिता विष्णुर्विष्णुः स्वजनबान्धवाः । यत्र विष्णुं न पश्यामि तेन वासेन किं मम
viṣṇurmātā pitā viṣṇurviṣṇuḥ svajanabāndhavāḥ yatra viṣṇuṁ na paśyāmi tena vāsena kiṁ mama
"'Vishnu is my mother, Vishnu my father, Vishnu my own kin and family — what good is any dwelling to me where I do not behold Vishnu?'"
Verse 42 (garuda.2.30.42)
जले विष्णुः स्थले विष्णुर्विष्णुः पर्वतमस्तके । ज्वालामालाकुले विष्णुः सर्वं विष्णुमयं जगत्
jale viṣṇuḥ sthale viṣṇurviṣṇuḥ parvatamastake jvālāmālākule viṣṇuḥ sarvaṁ viṣṇumayaṁ jagat
"'Vishnu is in the water, Vishnu on the land, Vishnu on the mountain peak; Vishnu amid garlands of flame — the whole universe is filled with Vishnu.'"
Verse 43 (garuda.2.30.43)
वयमापो वयं पृथ्वी वयं दर्भा वयं तिलाः । वयं गावो वयं राजा वयं वायुर्वयं प्रजाः
vayamāpo vayaṁ pṛthvī vayaṁ darbhā vayaṁ tilāḥ vayaṁ gāvo vayaṁ rājā vayaṁ vāyurvayaṁ prajāḥ
"'We are the waters, we are the earth, we are the darbha, we are the sesame; we are the cows, we are the king, we are the wind, we are all creatures.'"
Verse 44 (garuda.2.30.44)
वयं हेम वयं धान्यं वयं मधु वयं घृतम् । वयं विप्रा वयं देवा वयं शम्भुश्च भूर्भुवः
vayaṁ hema vayaṁ dhānyaṁ vayaṁ madhu vayaṁ ghṛtam vayaṁ viprā vayaṁ devā vayaṁ śambhuśca bhūrbhuvaḥ
"'We are gold, we are grain, we are honey, we are ghee; we are the brahmins, we are the gods, we are Shambhu, and earth and sky besides.'"
Verse 45 (garuda.2.30.45)
अहं दाता अहं ग्राही अहं यज्वा अहं क्रतुः । अहं हर्ता अहं धर्मो अहं पृथ्वी ह्यहं जलम्
ahaṁ dātā ahaṁ grāhī ahaṁ yajvā ahaṁ kratuḥ ahaṁ hartā ahaṁ dharmo ahaṁ pṛthvī hyahaṁ jalam
"'I am the giver, I am the receiver, I am the sacrificer, I am the sacrifice itself; I am the one who takes away, I am dharma, I am the earth, and I am the water.'"
Verse 46 (garuda.2.30.46)
धर्माधर्मे मतिं दद्यां कर्मभिस्तु शुभाशुभैः । यत्कर्म क्रियते क्वापि पूर्वजन्मार्जितं खग
dharmādharme matiṁ dadyāṁ karmabhistu śubhāśubhaiḥ yatkarma kriyate kvāpi pūrvajanmārjitaṁ khaga
"'Through good and evil deeds, I alone grant the mind's inclination toward dharma and adharma; O bird, whatever deed is done anywhere is acquired from a former birth.'"
Verse 47 (garuda.2.30.47)
धर्मे मतिमहं दद्यामधर्मेऽप्यहमेव च । यातनां कुरुते सोऽपि धर्मे मुक्तिं ददाम्यहम्
dharme matimahaṁ dadyāmadharme'pyahameva ca yātanāṁ kurute so'pi dharme muktiṁ dadāmyaham
"'I grant the inclination toward dharma, and I alone toward adharma as well; the one who follows adharma suffers torment, while to the one who follows dharma I grant liberation.'"
Verse 48 (garuda.2.30.48)
मनुजानां हिता तार्क्ष्य अन्ते वैतरणी स्मृता । तयावमत्य पापौघं विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति
manujānāṁ hitā tārkṣya ante vaitaraṇī smṛtā tayāvamatya pāpaughaṁ viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati
"O Tarkshya, for the good of men, the river Vaitarani is remembered at the end of life; crossing it, freed of the flood of sin, one goes to the world of Vishnu."
Verse 49 (garuda.2.30.49)
बालत्वे यच्च कौमारे यच्च परिणतौ च यत् । सर्वावम्थाकृतं पापं यच्च जन्मान्तरेष्वपि
bālatve yacca kaumāre yacca pariṇatau ca yat sarvāvamthākṛtaṁ pāpaṁ yacca janmāntareṣvapi
"Whatever sin was committed in infancy, in childhood, or in maturity — sin committed in every stage of life, and even across other births —"
Verse 50 (garuda.2.30.50)
यन्निशायां तथा प्रातर्यन्मध्याह्नापराह्नयोः । सन्ध्ययोर्यत्कृतं कर्म कर्मणा मनसा गिरा
yanniśāyāṁ tathā prātaryanmadhyāhnāparāhnayoḥ sandhyayoryatkṛtaṁ karma karmaṇā manasā girā
"whatever was done at night, in the morning, at midday or in the afternoon, or at either twilight, by deed, by mind, or by word —"
Verse 51 (garuda.2.30.51)
दत्त्वा वरां सकृदपि कपिलां सर्वकामिकाम् । उद्धरेदन्तकाले स आत्मानं पापसञ्चयात्
dattvā varāṁ sakṛdapi kapilāṁ sarvakāmikām uddharedantakāle sa ātmānaṁ pāpasañcayāt
"by giving, even once, an excellent tawny cow that fulfills every desire, a man delivers himself, at the time of death, from the whole accumulation of sin."
Verse 52 (garuda.2.30.52)
गावो ममाग्रतः सन्तु पृष्ठतः पार्श्वतस्तथा । गावो मे हृदये सन्तु गवां मध्ये वसाम्यहम्
gāvo mamāgrataḥ santu pṛṣṭhataḥ pārśvatastathā gāvo me hṛdaye santu gavāṁ madhye vasāmyaham
"'May cows stand before me, behind me, and on either side; may cows dwell in my heart — I abide in the very midst of cows.'"
Verse 53 (garuda.2.30.53)
या लक्ष्मीः सर्वभूतानां या च देवे व्यवस्थिता । धेनुरूपेण सा देवी मम पापं व्यपोहतु
yā lakṣmīḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ yā ca deve vyavasthitā dhenurūpeṇa sā devī mama pāpaṁ vyapohatu
"'May that goddess Lakshmi, who dwells in all beings and abides in the gods, wash away my sin in the form of the cow.'"
