Verse 1 (garuda.2.32.1)
तार्क्ष्य उवाच । कथमुत्पद्यते जन्तुर्भूतग्रामे चतुर्विधे । त्वचा रक्तं तथा मांसं मेदो मज्जास्थि जीवितम्
tārkṣya uvāca kathamutpadyate janturbhūtagrāme caturvidhe tvacā raktaṁ tathā māṁsaṁ medo majjāsthi jīvitam
Tarkshya said: "How is a being formed among the fourfold host of creatures? How do skin, blood, flesh, fat, marrow, bone, and life itself come to be?"
Verse 2 (garuda.2.32.2)
पादौ पाणी तथा गुह्यं जिह्वाकेशनखाः शिरः । सन्धिमार्गाश्च बहुशो रेखा नैकविधास्तथा
pādau pāṇī tathā guhyaṁ jihvākeśanakhāḥ śiraḥ sandhimārgāśca bahuśo rekhā naikavidhāstathā
"The feet, hands, organs of generation, tongue, hair, nails, and head, the many pathways of the joints, and the many kinds of lines on the body —"
Verse 3 (garuda.2.32.3)
कामः क्रोधो भयं लज्जा मनो हर्षः सुखासुखम् । चित्रितं छिद्रितञ्चापि नानाजालेन वेष्टितम्
kāmaḥ krodho bhayaṁ lajjā mano harṣaḥ sukhāsukham citritaṁ chidritañcāpi nānājālena veṣṭitam
"desire, anger, fear, shame, the mind, joy, pleasure and pain — this body is painted and pierced through, wrapped about in many nets."
Verse 4 (garuda.2.32.4)
इन्द्रजालमिदं मन्ये संसारेऽसारसागरे । कर्ता कोऽत्र हृषीकेश संसारे दुः खसंकुले
indrajālamidaṁ manye saṁsāre'sārasāgare kartā ko'tra hṛṣīkeśa saṁsāre duḥ khasaṁkule
"I hold this to be nothing but a conjuror's illusion, in this worthless ocean of samsara. Who, O Hrishikesha, is its maker in this world crowded with suffering?"
Verse 5 (garuda.2.32.5)
श्रीविष्णुरुवाच । कथयामि परं गोप्यं कोशस्यास्य विनिर्णयम् । यस्य विज्ञानमात्रेण सर्वज्ञत्वं प्रज्यते
śrīviṣṇuruvāca kathayāmi paraṁ gopyaṁ kośasyāsya vinirṇayam yasya vijñānamātreṇa sarvajñatvaṁ prajyate
Shri Vishnu said: "I shall tell the supreme secret, the full account of this bodily sheath — the mere understanding of which brings forth omniscience."
Verse 6 (garuda.2.32.6)
साधु पृष्टं त्वया लोके सदयं जीवकारणम् । वैनतेय शृणुष्व त्वमेकाग्रकृतमानसः
sādhu pṛṣṭaṁ tvayā loke sadayaṁ jīvakāraṇam vainateya śṛṇuṣva tvamekāgrakṛtamānasaḥ
"Well have you asked, O son of Vinata, about the compassionate cause of life in this world; listen now with your mind made one-pointed."
Verse 7 (garuda.2.32.7)
ऋतुकाले च नारीणां वर्ज्यं दिनचतुष्टयम् । यतस्तस्मिन् ब्रह्महत्यां पुरा वृत्रसमुत्थिताम्
ṛtukāle ca nārīṇāṁ varjyaṁ dinacatuṣṭayam yatastasmin brahmahatyāṁ purā vṛtrasamutthitām
"The four days of a woman's menstrual period are to be avoided; for the sin of brahmin-slaying that arose long ago from the killing of Vritra —"
Verse 8 (garuda.2.32.8)
ब्रह्मा शक्रात्समुत्तार्य चतुर्थांशेन दत्तवान् । तावन्नालोक्यते वक्त्रं पापं यावद्वपुः स्थितम्
brahmā śakrātsamuttārya caturthāṁśena dattavān tāvannālokyate vaktraṁ pāpaṁ yāvadvapuḥ sthitam
"Brahma lifted from Indra and gave one quarter of it to women; so long as that sin remains lodged in the body, her face should not be looked upon."
Verse 9 (garuda.2.32.9)
प्रथमेऽहनि चाण्डाली द्वितीये ब्रह्मघातिनी । तृतीये रजकी ज्ञेया चतुर्थेऽहनि शुध्यति
prathame'hani cāṇḍālī dvitīye brahmaghātinī tṛtīye rajakī jñeyā caturthe'hani śudhyati
"On the first day she should be regarded as an outcaste woman, on the second as a slayer of a brahmin, on the third as a washerwoman; on the fourth day she becomes pure."
Verse 10 (garuda.2.32.10)
सप्ताहात्पितृदेवानां भवेद्योग्या कृतार्चने । सप्ताहमध्ये यो गर्भस्तत्संम्भूतिर्मलिम्लुचा
saptāhātpitṛdevānāṁ bhavedyogyā kṛtārcane saptāhamadhye yo garbhastatsaṁmbhūtirmalimlucā
"After a week has passed she becomes fit for the worship of gods and ancestors; a conception that occurs within that week results in a tainted birth."
Verse 11 (garuda.2.32.11)
निषेकसमये पित्रोर्यादृक्चित्तविकल्पना । तादृग्गर्भसमुत्पत्तिर्जायते नात्र संशयः
niṣekasamaye pitroryādṛkcittavikalpanā tādṛggarbhasamutpattirjāyate nātra saṁśayaḥ
"Whatever disposition the parents' minds hold at the moment of union, a corresponding conception of the embryo results — there is no doubt of this."
Verse 12 (garuda.2.32.12)
युग्मासु पुत्त्रा जायन्ते स्त्रियोऽयुग्मासु रात्रिषु । पूर्वसप्तममुत्सृज्य तस्माद्युग्मासु संविशेत्
yugmāsu puttrā jāyante striyo'yugmāsu rātriṣu pūrvasaptamamutsṛjya tasmādyugmāsu saṁviśet
"Sons are born on even nights, daughters on uneven nights; therefore, setting aside the first seven nights, union should take place only on the even nights."
Verse 13 (garuda.2.32.13)
षोडशर्तुर्निशाः स्त्रीणां सामान्यात्समुदाहृतः । या चतुर्दशमी रात्रिर्गर्भस्तिष्ठति तत्र चेत्
ṣoḍaśarturniśāḥ strīṇāṁ sāmānyātsamudāhṛtaḥ yā caturdaśamī rātrirgarbhastiṣṭhati tatra cet
"Sixteen nights are generally reckoned as a woman's fertile period; if conception occurs on the fourteenth of these,"
Verse 14 (garuda.2.32.14)
गुणभाग्यनिधिः पुत्रस्तत्र जायेत धार्मिकः । सा निशा तत्र सामान्यैर्न लभ्येत खगाधिप
guṇabhāgyanidhiḥ putrastatra jāyeta dhārmikaḥ sā niśā tatra sāmānyairna labhyeta khagādhipa
"a virtuous and fortunate, righteous son is born there; O lord of birds, that night is not easily attained by ordinary people."
Verse 15 (garuda.2.32.15)
प्रायशः सम्भवत्यत्र गर्भस्त्वष्टाहमध्यतः । पञ्चमेऽहनि नारीणां कार्यं माधुर्यभोजनम्
prāyaśaḥ sambhavatyatra garbhastvaṣṭāhamadhyataḥ pañcame'hani nārīṇāṁ kāryaṁ mādhuryabhojanam
"Generally conception occurs within the first eight nights. On the fifth day the woman should be given sweet food."
Verse 16 (garuda.2.32.16)
कटुक्षारञ्च तीक्ष्णञ्च त्याज्यमुष्णञ्च दूरतः । तत्क्षेत्रमोषधीपात्रं बीजञ्चाप्यमृतायितम्
kaṭukṣārañca tīkṣṇañca tyājyamuṣṇañca dūrataḥ tatkṣetramoṣadhīpātraṁ bījañcāpyamṛtāyitam
"Pungent, alkaline, sharp, and hot foods should be avoided altogether; that field, the womb, is the vessel of the healing herb, and the seed placed there is like nectar."
Verse 17 (garuda.2.32.17)
तस्मिन्नुप्त्वा नरः स्वामी सम्यक्फलमवाप्नुयात् । तस्याश्चैवातपो वर्ज्य शीतलं केवलं चरेत्
tasminnuptvā naraḥ svāmī samyakphalamavāpnuyāt tasyāścaivātapo varjya śītalaṁ kevalaṁ caret
"Sowing the seed there, the husband, its master, obtains the proper fruit; heat is to be avoided for her, and only coolness should be observed."
Verse 18 (garuda.2.32.18)
ताम्बूलपुष्पश्रीखण्डैः संयुक्तः शुचिवस्त्रभृत् । धर्ममादाय मनसि सुतल्पं संविशेत्पुमान्
tāmbūlapuṣpaśrīkhaṇḍaiḥ saṁyuktaḥ śucivastrabhṛt dharmamādāya manasi sutalpaṁ saṁviśetpumān
"Adorned with betel, flowers, and sandal paste, clad in clean garments, keeping dharma in mind, the man should go to a good bed."
Verse 19 (garuda.2.32.19)
निषेकसमये यादृङ्नरचित्तविकल्पना । तादृक्स्वभावसम्भूतिर्जन्तुर्विशति कुक्षिगः
niṣekasamaye yādṛṅnaracittavikalpanā tādṛksvabhāvasambhūtirjanturviśati kukṣigaḥ
"Whatever disposition is in the man's mind at the moment of union, with a corresponding nature the being enters the womb."
Verse 20 (garuda.2.32.20)
शुक्रशोणितसंयोगे पिण्डोत्पत्तिः प्रजायते । वर्धते जठरे जन्तुस्तारापतिरिवाम्बरे
śukraśoṇitasaṁyoge piṇḍotpattiḥ prajāyate vardhate jaṭhare jantustārāpatirivāmbare
"From the union of semen and blood arises the embryonic mass; the being grows in the womb just as the moon grows in the sky."
Verse 21 (garuda.2.32.21)
चैतन्यं बीजरूपं हि शुक्रे नित्यं व्यवस्थितम् । कामश्चित्तञ्च शुक्रञ्च यदा ह्येकत्वमाप्नुयुः
caitanyaṁ bījarūpaṁ hi śukre nityaṁ vyavasthitam kāmaścittañca śukrañca yadā hyekatvamāpnuyuḥ
"Consciousness, in the form of the seed, ever abides within the semen; when desire, the mind, and the semen come together as one,"
Verse 22 (garuda.2.32.22)
तदा द्रावमवाप्नोति योषागर्भाशये नरः । रक्ताधिक्ये भवेन्नारी शुक्राधिक्ये भवेत्पुमान्
tadā drāvamavāpnoti yoṣāgarbhāśaye naraḥ raktādhikye bhavennārī śukrādhikye bhavetpumān
"then the man releases his seed within the woman's womb. If blood predominates, a daughter results; if semen predominates, a son."
Verse 23 (garuda.2.32.23)
शुक्रशोणितयो साम्ये गर्भाः षण्डत्वमाप्नुयुः । अहोरात्रेण कलिलं बुद्वदं पञ्चभिर्दिनैः
śukraśoṇitayo sāmye garbhāḥ ṣaṇḍatvamāpnuyuḥ ahorātreṇa kalilaṁ budvadaṁ pañcabhirdinaiḥ
"If semen and blood are equal, the embryo becomes neuter. In a day and night it becomes a fluid mass, and by the fifth day a bubble-like form;"
Verse 24 (garuda.2.32.24)
चतुर्दशे भवेन्मांसं मिश्रधातुसमन्वितम् । घनं मांसञ्च विंशाहे गर्भस्थो वर्धते क्रमात्
caturdaśe bhavenmāṁsaṁ miśradhātusamanvitam ghanaṁ māṁsañca viṁśāhe garbhastho vardhate kramāt
"on the fourteenth day it becomes flesh mingled with the bodily elements; by the twentieth day the flesh grows solid, and the embryo increases stage by stage."
Verse 25 (garuda.2.32.25)
पञ्चविंशतिमे चाह्नि बलं पुष्टिश्च जायते । तथा मासे तु सम्पूर्णे पञ्चतत्त्वं निधारयेत्
pañcaviṁśatime cāhni balaṁ puṣṭiśca jāyate tathā māse tu sampūrṇe pañcatattvaṁ nidhārayet
"On the twenty-fifth day strength and vigor arise; when a full month has passed, the five elements become firmly established."
Verse 26 (garuda.2.32.26)
मासद्वये तु सञ्जाते त्वचा मेदश्च जायते । मज्जास्थीनि त्रिभिर्मासैः केशाङ्गुल्यश्चतुर्थके
māsadvaye tu sañjāte tvacā medaśca jāyate majjāsthīni tribhirmāsaiḥ keśāṅgulyaścaturthake
"When two months have passed, skin and fat form; marrow and bone by three months; hair and fingers by the fourth month."
Verse 27 (garuda.2.32.27)
कर्णौ च नासिके वक्षो जायेरन्मासि पञ्चमे । कण्ठरन्ध्रोदरं षष्ठे गुह्यादिर्मासि सप्तमे
karṇau ca nāsike vakṣo jāyeranmāsi pañcame kaṇṭharandhrodaraṁ ṣaṣṭhe guhyādirmāsi saptame
"Ears, nostrils, and chest arise in the fifth month; the throat and belly in the sixth; the genitals and the rest in the seventh."
Verse 28 (garuda.2.32.28)
अङ्गप्रत्यङ्गसम्पूर्णो गर्भो मासैरथाष्टभिः । अष्टमे चलते जीवो धात्रीगर्भे पुनः पुनः । नवमेमासि सम्प्राप्ते गर्भस्थौजौ दृढं भवेत्
aṅgapratyaṅgasampūrṇo garbho māsairathāṣṭabhiḥ aṣṭame calate jīvo dhātrīgarbhe punaḥ punaḥ navamemāsi samprāpte garbhasthaujau dṛḍhaṁ bhavet
"By the eighth month the embryo is complete with all its limbs, major and minor; in the eighth month the soul stirs again and again in the mother's womb; when the ninth month arrives, its vigor becomes firm."
Verse 29 (garuda.2.32.29)
चिकित्सा जायते तस्य गर्भवासपरिक्षये । नारी वाथ नरो वाथ नपुंस्त्वं वाभिजायते
cikitsā jāyate tasya garbhavāsaparikṣaye nārī vātha naro vātha napuṁstvaṁ vābhijāyate
"As the term of its stay in the womb nears its end, a discernment arises in it; then it is born as a woman, a man, or a neuter."
Verse 30 (garuda.2.32.30)
शक्तित्रयं विशालाक्षं षाट्कौशिकसमायुतम् । पञ्चेन्द्रियसमोपेतं दशनाडीविभूषितम्
śaktitrayaṁ viśālākṣaṁ ṣāṭkauśikasamāyutam pañcendriyasamopetaṁ daśanāḍīvibhūṣitam
"Endowed with the three powers, wide-eyed, made of six sheaths, furnished with the five senses, adorned with ten principal channels,"
Verse 31 (garuda.2.32.31)
दशप्राणगुणोपेतं यो जानाति स योगवित् । मज्जास्थिशुक्रमांसानि रोम रक्तं बलं तथा
daśaprāṇaguṇopetaṁ yo jānāti sa yogavit majjāsthiśukramāṁsāni roma raktaṁ balaṁ tathā
"and endowed with the qualities of the ten vital breaths — whoever knows this is a true knower of yoga. Marrow, bone, semen, flesh, hair, blood, and strength —"
Verse 32 (garuda.2.32.32)
षाट्कौशिकमिदं पिण्डं स्याज्जन्तोः पाञ्चभौतिकम् । नवमे दशमे मासि जायते पाञ्चभौतिकः
ṣāṭkauśikamidaṁ piṇḍaṁ syājjantoḥ pāñcabhautikam navame daśame māsi jāyate pāñcabhautikaḥ
"this six-sheathed mass is the being's body, made of the five elements. By the ninth or tenth month it becomes fully composed of the five elements."
Verse 33 (garuda.2.32.33)
सूतिवातैः समाकृष्टः पीडया विह्वलीकृतः । पुष्टो नाड्याः सुषुम्णाया योषिद्गर्भस्थितस्त्वरन्
sūtivātaiḥ samākṛṣṭaḥ pīḍayā vihvalīkṛtaḥ puṣṭo nāḍyāḥ suṣumṇāyā yoṣidgarbhasthitastvaran
"Drawn by the winds of labor, made helpless by pain, nourished through the sushumna channel, the being in the womb hastens toward birth."
Verse 34 (garuda.2.32.34)
क्षितिर्वारि हविर्भोक्ता पवनाकाशमेव च । एभिर्भूतैः पीडितस्तु निबद्धः स्नायुबन्धनैः
kṣitirvāri havirbhoktā pavanākāśameva ca ebhirbhūtaiḥ pīḍitastu nibaddhaḥ snāyubandhanaiḥ
"Earth, water, fire the receiver of oblations, wind, and space — afflicted by these elements and bound in sinewy bonds,"
Verse 35 (garuda.2.32.35)
मूलभूता इमे प्रोक्ताः सप्त नाड्यन्तरे स्थिताः । त्वचास्थिनाड्यो रोमाणि मांसञ्चैवात्र पञ्चमम्
mūlabhūtā ime proktāḥ sapta nāḍyantare sthitāḥ tvacāsthināḍyo romāṇi māṁsañcaivātra pañcamam
"these are declared to be the root elements, established within seven channels: the skin, bones, nerve-channels, hair, and flesh as the fifth."
Verse 36 (garuda.2.32.36)
एते पञ्च गुणाः प्रोक्ता मया भूमेः खगेश्वर । यथा पञ्च गुणाश्चापस्तथा तच्छृणु काश्यप
ete pañca guṇāḥ proktā mayā bhūmeḥ khageśvara yathā pañca guṇāścāpastathā tacchṛṇu kāśyapa
"O lord of birds, these are the five qualities of earth that I have declared; hear now, likewise, the five qualities of water, O Kashyapa."
Verse 37 (garuda.2.32.37)
लाला मूत्रं तथा शुक्रं मज्जार रक्तञ्च पञ्चमम् । आपः पञ्चगुणाः प्रोक्ता ज्ञातव्यास्ते प्रयत्नतः
lālā mūtraṁ tathā śukraṁ majjāra raktañca pañcamam āpaḥ pañcaguṇāḥ proktā jñātavyāste prayatnataḥ
"Saliva, urine, semen, marrow, and blood as the fifth — these five qualities of water are declared; they should be known with diligence."
Verse 38 (garuda.2.32.38)
क्षुधा तृषा तथा निद्रा आलस्यं कान्तिरेव च । तेजः पञ्चगुणं प्रोक्तं तार्क्ष्य सर्वत्रयोगिभिः
kṣudhā tṛṣā tathā nidrā ālasyaṁ kāntireva ca tejaḥ pañcaguṇaṁ proktaṁ tārkṣya sarvatrayogibhiḥ
"Hunger, thirst, sleep, laziness, and radiance — O Tarkshya, these are declared by every yogi to be the five qualities of fire."
Verse 39 (garuda.2.32.39)
रागद्वेषौ तथा लज्जा भयं मोहस्तथैव च । इत्येतत्कथितं तार्क्ष्य वायुजं गुणपञ्चकम्
rāgadveṣau tathā lajjā bhayaṁ mohastathaiva ca ityetatkathitaṁ tārkṣya vāyujaṁ guṇapañcakam
"Attachment, aversion, shame, fear, and delusion — O Tarkshya, these are declared to be the five qualities born of wind."
Verse 40 (garuda.2.32.40)
आकुञ्चनं धावनञ्च लङ्घनञ्च प्रसारणम् । निरोधः पञ्चमः प्रोक्तो वायोः पञ्च गुणाः स्मृताः
ākuñcanaṁ dhāvanañca laṅghanañca prasāraṇam nirodhaḥ pañcamaḥ prokto vāyoḥ pañca guṇāḥ smṛtāḥ
"Contraction, running, leaping, extension, and restraint as the fifth — these are remembered as the five qualities of the vital wind."
Verse 41 (garuda.2.32.41)
घोषश्चिन्ता च गाम्भीर्यं श्रवणं सत्यसंक्रमः । आकाशस्य गुणाः पञ्च ज्ञातव्यास्तार्क्ष्य यत्नतः
ghoṣaścintā ca gāmbhīryaṁ śravaṇaṁ satyasaṁkramaḥ ākāśasya guṇāḥ pañca jñātavyāstārkṣya yatnataḥ
"Sound, reflection, depth, hearing, and the carrying of truth — O Tarkshya, these five qualities of space should be known with diligence."
Verse 42 (garuda.2.32.42)
श्रोत्रं त्वक्चक्षुषी जिह्वा नासा बुद्धीन्द्रियाणि च । पाणी पादौ गुदं प्राक्च गुह्यं कर्मेन्द्रियाणि च
śrotraṁ tvakcakṣuṣī jihvā nāsā buddhīndriyāṇi ca pāṇī pādau gudaṁ prākca guhyaṁ karmendriyāṇi ca
"Ear, skin, eyes, tongue, and nose are the organs of knowledge; hands, feet, anus, and the organ of generation are the organs of action."
Verse 43 (garuda.2.32.43)
इडाच पिङ्गला चैव सुषुम्णा च तृतीयका । गान्धारी गजजिह्वा च पूषा चैव यशा तथा
iḍāca piṅgalā caiva suṣumṇā ca tṛtīyakā gāndhārī gajajihvā ca pūṣā caiva yaśā tathā
"Ida, and Pingala, and Sushumna as the third; Gandhari, Hastijihva, and Pusha, and Yashasvini as well;"
Verse 44 (garuda.2.32.44)
अलम्बुषा कुहूश्चैव शङ्खिनी दशमी स्मृता । पिण्ड मध्ये स्थिता ह्येताः प्रधाना दश नाडयः
alambuṣā kuhūścaiva śaṅkhinī daśamī smṛtā piṇḍa madhye sthitā hyetāḥ pradhānā daśa nāḍayaḥ
"Alambusha, and Kuhu, and Shankhini remembered as the tenth — these are the ten principal channels situated within the body."
Verse 45 (garuda.2.32.45)
प्राणापानौ समानश्च उदानो व्यान एव च । नागः कूर्मश्च कृकरो देवदत्तो धनञ्जयः
prāṇāpānau samānaśca udāno vyāna eva ca nāgaḥ kūrmaśca kṛkaro devadatto dhanañjayaḥ
"Prana, Apana, Samana, Udana, and Vyana; Naga, Kurma, Krikara, Devadatta, and Dhananjaya —"
Verse 46 (garuda.2.32.46)
इत्येते वायवः प्रोक्ता दश देहेषु सुस्थिताः । केवलं भुक्तमन्नञ्च पुष्टिदं सर्वदेहिनाम्
ityete vāyavaḥ proktā daśa deheṣu susthitāḥ kevalaṁ bhuktamannañca puṣṭidaṁ sarvadehinām
"these ten are declared to be the vital airs firmly established in the body. Food, once merely eaten, nourishes every embodied being,"
Verse 47 (garuda.2.32.47)
नयते प्राणदो वायुः शरीरे सर्वसन्धिषु । आहारो भुक्तमात्रस्तु वायुना क्रियते द्विधा
nayate prāṇado vāyuḥ śarīre sarvasandhiṣu āhāro bhuktamātrastu vāyunā kriyate dvidhā
"carried by the life-giving breath to every joint in the body. The food that is eaten is made twofold by that breath;"
Verse 48 (garuda.2.32.48)
स प्रविश्य गुहे सम्यक्पृथगन्नं पृथग्जलम् । ऊर्ध्वमग्नेर्जलं कृत्वा तदन्नञ्च जलोपरि
sa praviśya guhe samyakpṛthagannaṁ pṛthagjalam ūrdhvamagnerjalaṁ kṛtvā tadannañca jalopari
"entering well into the cavity of the belly, it separates food from water, placing the water above the fire and the food above the water,"
Verse 49 (garuda.2.32.49)
अग्नेश्चाधः स्वयं प्राणस्तमग्निञ्च धमेच्छनैः । वायुना धम्यमानोऽग्निः पृथक्किट्टं पृथग्रसम्
agneścādhaḥ svayaṁ prāṇastamagniñca dhamecchanaiḥ vāyunā dhamyamāno'gniḥ pṛthakkiṭṭaṁ pṛthagrasam
"while the breath itself remains below the fire, gently fanning it. Fanned by the breath, that fire separates the refuse from the essence."
Verse 50 (garuda.2.32.50)
मलैर्द्वादशभिः किट्टं भिन्नं देहात्पृथग्भवेत् । कर्णाक्षिनासिका जिह्वा दन्तनाभिवपुर्गुदम्
malairdvādaśabhiḥ kiṭṭaṁ bhinnaṁ dehātpṛthagbhavet karṇākṣināsikā jihvā dantanābhivapurgudam
"Through the twelve impurities, refuse is separated from the body: the ears, eyes, nose, tongue, teeth, navel, body, anus,"

नखा मलाश्रया ह्येते विण्मूत्रञ्चेत्यनन्तकम् । शुक्रशोणितसंयोगादेतत्षाट्कौशिकं स्मृतम्
nakhā malāśrayā hyete viṇmūtrañcetyanantakam śukraśoṇitasaṁyogādetatṣāṭkauśikaṁ smṛtam
"and nails are the seats of these impurities, along with feces and urine, endless in kind. From the union of semen and blood this six-sheathed body is said to be formed."

रोम्णां कोट्यस्तथा तिस्रोऽप्यर्धकोटि समन्विताः । द्वात्रिंशद्दशनाः प्रोक्ताः सामान्याद्विनतासुत
romṇāṁ koṭyastathā tisro'pyardhakoṭi samanvitāḥ dvātriṁśaddaśanāḥ proktāḥ sāmānyādvinatāsuta
"There are three and a half crores of hairs upon the body; and, O son of Vinata, thirty-two teeth in general are declared."

सप्त लक्षाणि केशाः स्युर्नखाः प्रोक्तास्तु विंशतिः । मांसं पलसहस्रैकं सामान्याद्देहसंस्थितम्
sapta lakṣāṇi keśāḥ syurnakhāḥ proktāstu viṁśatiḥ māṁsaṁ palasahasraikaṁ sāmānyāddehasaṁsthitam
"The hairs of the head number seven hundred thousand, and the nails are said to be twenty; flesh, generally, amounts to one thousand palas in the body."

रक्तं पलशतं तार्क्ष्यं बुद्धमेव पुरातनैः । पलानि दश मेदश्च त्वचा चैव तु तत्समा
raktaṁ palaśataṁ tārkṣyaṁ buddhameva purātanaiḥ palāni daśa medaśca tvacā caiva tu tatsamā
"O Tarkshya, the ancients reckoned blood at one hundred palas; fat at ten palas, and skin the same."

पलद्वादशकं मज्जा महारक्तं पलत्रयम् । शुक्रं द्विकुडवं ज्ञेयं शोणितं कुडवं स्मृतम्
paladvādaśakaṁ majjā mahāraktaṁ palatrayam śukraṁ dvikuḍavaṁ jñeyaṁ śoṇitaṁ kuḍavaṁ smṛtam
"Marrow at twelve palas, the great blood at three palas; semen should be known as two kudavas, and menstrual blood as one kudava."

श्लेष्माणश्च षडूर्ध्वञ्च विण्मूत्रं तत्प्रमाणतः । अस्थ्नां हि ह्यधिकं प्रोक्तं षष्ट्युत्तरशतत्रयात्
śleṣmāṇaśca ṣaḍūrdhvañca viṇmūtraṁ tatpramāṇataḥ asthnāṁ hi hyadhikaṁ proktaṁ ṣaṣṭyuttaraśatatrayāt
"Phlegm exceeds six palas, and feces and urine in that same measure; the bones are said to number more than three hundred and sixty."

एवं पिण्डः समाख्यातो वैभवं सम्प्रचक्ष्महे । सुखं दुः खं भयं क्षेमं कर्मणैव हि प्राप्यते
evaṁ piṇḍaḥ samākhyāto vaibhavaṁ sampracakṣmahe sukhaṁ duḥ khaṁ bhayaṁ kṣemaṁ karmaṇaiva hi prāpyate
"Thus the bodily mass has been described; now its fortunes are told — pleasure, pain, fear, and well-being are all attained only through one's own deeds."

अधोमुखं चोर्ध्वपादं गर्भाद्वायुः प्रकर्षति । तले तु करयोर्न्यस्य वर्धते जानुपार्श्वयोः
adhomukhaṁ cordhvapādaṁ garbhādvāyuḥ prakarṣati tale tu karayornyasya vardhate jānupārśvayoḥ
"Head down and feet up, the wind draws it forth from the womb; with palms placed flat, it grows at the knees and sides,"

अङ्गुष्ठौ चोपरि न्यस्तौ जान्वोरथ कराङ्गुली । जानुपृष्ठे तथा नेत्रे जानुमध्ये च नासिका
aṅguṣṭhau copari nyastau jānvoratha karāṅgulī jānupṛṣṭhe tathā netre jānumadhye ca nāsikā
"the thumbs resting above the knees, the fingers upon the knees; the eyes behind the knees, and the nose between the knees."

एवं वृद्धिं क्रमाद्याति जन्तुः स्त्रीगर्भसंस्थितः । काठिन्यमस्थीन्यायान्ति भुक्तपीतेन जीवति
evaṁ vṛddhiṁ kramādyāti jantuḥ strīgarbhasaṁsthitaḥ kāṭhinyamasthīnyāyānti bhuktapītena jīvati
"Thus, stage by stage, the being grows in the woman's womb; it lives on what is eaten and drunk, and its bones grow hard."

नाडी वाप्यायनी नाम नाभ्यां तत्र निबध्यते । स्त्रीणां तथान्त्रसुषिरे स निबद्धः प्रजायते
nāḍī vāpyāyanī nāma nābhyāṁ tatra nibadhyate strīṇāṁ tathāntrasuṣire sa nibaddhaḥ prajāyate
"A channel called Apyayani, the nourisher, remains bound there at the navel; in women it forms fastened within the cavity of the intestines."

क्रामन्ति भुक्तपीतानि स्त्रीणां गर्भोदरे तथा । तैराप्यायितदेहोऽसौ जन्तुर्वृद्धिमुपैति च
krāmanti bhuktapītāni strīṇāṁ garbhodare tathā tairāpyāyitadeho'sau janturvṛddhimupaiti ca
"Whatever is eaten and drunk likewise passes into the woman's womb; nourished by it, the being's body grows and thrives."

स्मृत्यस्तत्र प्रयान्त्यस्य बह्व्यः संसारभूतयः । ततो निर्वेदमायाति पीड्यमान इतस्ततः
smṛtyastatra prayāntyasya bahvyaḥ saṁsārabhūtayaḥ tato nirvedamāyāti pīḍyamāna itastataḥ
"There many memories of his former births return to him; and, afflicted this way and that, he comes to a sense of disillusionment."

पुनर्नैवं करिष्यामि भुक्तमात्र इहोदरात् । तथातथा यतिष्यामि गर्भं नाप्नोम्यहं यथा
punarnaivaṁ kariṣyāmi bhuktamātra ihodarāt tathātathā yatiṣyāmi garbhaṁ nāpnomyahaṁ yathā
"'Once I come forth from this womb, I shall never do this again; I shall strive in every way so that I need not enter a womb once more.'"

इति सञ्चिन्तयञ्जीवो स्मृत्वा जन्मशतानि वै । यानि पूर्वानुभूतानि देवभूतात्मजानि वै
iti sañcintayañjīvo smṛtvā janmaśatāni vai yāni pūrvānubhūtāni devabhūtātmajāni vai
"Thus reflecting, the soul recalls the hundreds of former births he has passed through — those lived as gods, as beasts, and as human offspring."

ततः कालक्रमाज्जन्तुः परिवर्त्यत्वधोमुखः । नवमे दशमे वापि मासि संजायते ततः
tataḥ kālakramājjantuḥ parivartyatvadhomukhaḥ navame daśame vāpi māsi saṁjāyate tataḥ
"Then, in the course of time, the being turns about, head downward, and is born in the ninth or tenth month."

निष्क्रम्यमाणो वातेन प्राजापत्येन पीड्यते । निष्क्रमते च विलपंस्तदा दुःखनिपीडितः
niṣkramyamāṇo vātena prājāpatyena pīḍyate niṣkramate ca vilapaṁstadā duḥkhanipīḍitaḥ
"As it is expelled, afflicted by the wind of Prajapati, overwhelmed with pain, it comes forth wailing."

निष्क्रामंश्चोदरान्मूर्छामसह्यां प्रतिपद्यते । प्राप्नोति चेतनां चासौ वायुस्पर्शसुखान्वितः
niṣkrāmaṁścodarānmūrchāmasahyāṁ pratipadyate prāpnoti cetanāṁ cāsau vāyusparśasukhānvitaḥ
"As it emerges from the womb it undergoes an unbearable swoon; and it regains consciousness only through the pleasant touch of the outer air."

ततस्तं वैष्णवी माया समास्कन्दति मोहिनी । तया विमोहितात्मासौ ज्ञानभ्रंशमवाप्नुते
tatastaṁ vaiṣṇavī māyā samāskandati mohinī tayā vimohitātmāsau jñānabhraṁśamavāpnute
"Then the deluding, bewitching power of Vishnu overtakes it,"

भ्रष्टज्ञानं बालभावे ततो जन्तुः प्रपद्यते । ततः कौमारकावस्थां यौवनं वृद्धतामपि
bhraṣṭajñānaṁ bālabhāve tato jantuḥ prapadyate tataḥ kaumārakāvasthāṁ yauvanaṁ vṛddhatāmapi
"and, its mind bewildered by it, it loses its former knowledge. Having lost that knowledge, the being enters infancy, and then childhood, youth, and old age in turn."
Verse 71 (garuda.2.32.71)
पुनश्च तद्वन्मरणं जन्म प्राप्नोति मानवः । ततः संसारचक्रेऽस्मिन् भ्राम्यते घटयन्त्रवत्
punaśca tadvanmaraṇaṁ janma prāpnoti mānavaḥ tataḥ saṁsāracakre'smin bhrāmyate ghaṭayantravat
"And then, in the same way, the human undergoes birth and death once more; thus he is whirled about in this wheel of samsara like the bucket of a well-wheel."
Verse 72 (garuda.2.32.72)
कदाचित्स्वर्गमाप्नोति कदाचिन्निरयं नरः । स्वर्गं च निरयं चैव स्वकर्मफलमश्नुते
kadācitsvargamāpnoti kadācinnirayaṁ naraḥ svargaṁ ca nirayaṁ caiva svakarmaphalamaśnute
"A man sometimes attains heaven, sometimes hell; he experiences both heaven and hell according to the fruit of his own deeds."

कदाचिद्भुक्तकर्मा च भुवं स्वल्पेन गच्छति । स्वर्लोके नरके चैव भुक्तप्राये द्विजोत्तमाः
kadācidbhuktakarmā ca bhuvaṁ svalpena gacchati svarloke narake caiva bhuktaprāye dvijottamāḥ
"Sometimes, having exhausted his allotted fruit, he returns swiftly to the earth; O best of the twice-born, in both heaven and hell, when the merit or demerit is nearly spent,"

नरकेषु महद्दुःखमेतद्यत्स्वर्गवासिनः । दृश्यते नात्र मोदन्ते पात्यमानास्तु नारकैः
narakeṣu mahadduḥkhametadyatsvargavāsinaḥ dṛśyate nātra modante pātyamānāstu nārakaiḥ
"in the hells there is this great suffering, that the dwellers of heaven are not even seen to be happy there; beings cast down amid infernal torments find no joy there at all."

स्वर्गेऽपि दुः खमतुलं यदारोहणकालतः । प्रभृत्यहं पतिष्यामीत्येतन्मनसि वर्तते
svarge'pi duḥ khamatulaṁ yadārohaṇakālataḥ prabhṛtyahaṁ patiṣyāmītyetanmanasi vartate
"Even in heaven there is unequaled suffering, for from the very moment of arriving there, the thought 'I shall fall' remains fixed in the mind."
Verse 76 (garuda.2.32.76)
नारकांश्चैव सम्प्रेक्ष्य महद्दुःखमवाप्यते । एवं गतिमहं गन्तेत्यहर्निशमनिर्वृतः
nārakāṁścaiva samprekṣya mahadduḥkhamavāpyate evaṁ gatimahaṁ gantetyaharniśamanirvṛtaḥ
"Seeing the beings of hell, great anguish arises — 'I too shall come to such a state' — and thus, day and night, he finds no peace."
Verse 77 (garuda.2.32.77)
गर्भवासे महद्दुःखं जायमानस्य योनिजम् । जातस्य बालभावेऽपि वृद्धत्वे दुःखमेव च
garbhavāse mahadduḥkhaṁ jāyamānasya yonijam jātasya bālabhāve'pi vṛddhatve duḥkhameva ca
"In residing in the womb, great suffering attends birth, born of the very nature of the womb; once born, suffering remains in infancy, and in old age as well."

कामेर्ष्याक्रोधसम्बन्धाद्यौवनेऽपि च दुः सहम् । दुःस्वप्नं या वृद्धता च मरणे दुःखमुत्कटम्
kāmerṣyākrodhasambandhādyauvane'pi ca duḥ saham duḥsvapnaṁ yā vṛddhatā ca maraṇe duḥkhamutkaṭam
"In youth too, unbearable suffering arises through desire, jealousy, and anger; there is suffering from bad dreams, from old age, and the sharpest suffering at the time of death."

कृष्यमाणश्च याम्यैः स नरकेऽपि च यात्यधः । पुनश्च गर्भाज्जन्म स्यान्मरणं दुष्करं तथा
kṛṣyamāṇaśca yāmyaiḥ sa narake'pi ca yātyadhaḥ punaśca garbhājjanma syānmaraṇaṁ duṣkaraṁ tathā
"Dragged along by Yama's servants, he goes down even into hell; and again there is birth from the womb, and again that same hard death."

एवं संसारचक्रेऽस्मिज्जन्तवो घटयन्त्रवत् । भ्राम्यन्ते प्राक्तनैर्बधैर्बद्धा विध्यन्ति चासकृत्
evaṁ saṁsāracakre'smijjantavo ghaṭayantravat bhrāmyante prāktanairbadhairbaddhā vidhyanti cāsakṛt
"Thus in this wheel of samsara, beings are whirled about like the bucket of a well-wheel, bound by the fetters forged in former lives, struck down again and again."
Verse 81 (garuda.2.32.81)
नास्ति पक्षिन्सुखं किञ्चित्क्षेत्रे दुः खशताकुले । विनतासुत मोक्षाय यतितव्यं ततो नरैः
nāsti pakṣinsukhaṁ kiñcitkṣetre duḥ khaśatākule vinatāsuta mokṣāya yatitavyaṁ tato naraiḥ
"O bird, there is no happiness whatsoever in this field crowded with a hundred sorrows; therefore, O son of Vinata, men should strive for liberation."
Verse 82 (garuda.2.32.82)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथा गर्भस्य संस्थितिः । कथयामि क्रमप्रश्रं पृष्टं वा वर्तते स्पृहा
etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ yathā garbhasya saṁsthitiḥ kathayāmi kramapraśraṁ pṛṣṭaṁ vā vartate spṛhā
"All this have I told you of the manner of the embryo's development. I shall now answer, in order, the questions you asked — or does your longing still stand?"

गरुड उवाच । मध्ये कृतमहाप्रश्नद्वयस्याप्तं मयोत्तरम् । प्रश्नस्यापि तृतीयस्य उत्तरं च विधीयताम्
garuḍa uvāca madhye kṛtamahāpraśnadvayasyāptaṁ mayottaram praśnasyāpi tṛtīyasya uttaraṁ ca vidhīyatām
Garuda said: "In the course of this I have received the answer to two of the great questions; let the answer to the third question also be given now."

श्रीकृष्ण उवाच । म्रियमाणस्य किं कृत्यमिति त्वं पृष्टवानसि । शृणु तत्रोत्तरं तूक्तं कथयामि समासतः
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca mriyamāṇasya kiṁ kṛtyamiti tvaṁ pṛṣṭavānasi śṛṇu tatrottaraṁ tūktaṁ kathayāmi samāsataḥ
Shri Krishna said: "You asked what should be done for one who is dying; hear the answer to that — I shall tell it in brief."

आसन्नमरणं ज्ञात्वा पुरुषं स्नापयेत्ततः । गोमूत्रगोमयसुमृत्तीर्थोदककुशोदकैः
āsannamaraṇaṁ jñātvā puruṣaṁ snāpayettataḥ gomūtragomayasumṛttīrthodakakuśodakaiḥ
"Knowing death to be near, the man should be bathed with cow's urine, cow-dung, sacred earth, water from a holy ford, and water infused with kusha grass."

वाससी परिधार्याथ धौते तु शुचिनी शुभे । दर्भाण्यादौ समास्तीर्य दक्षिणाग्रान्विकीर्य च
vāsasī paridhāryātha dhaute tu śucinī śubhe darbhāṇyādau samāstīrya dakṣiṇāgrānvikīrya ca
"Then, having clothed him in two clean, well-washed garments, darbha grass should first be spread, its tips scattered toward the south,"

तिलान् गोमयलिप्तायां भूमौ तत्र निवेशयेत्
tilān gomayaliptāyāṁ bhūmau tatra niveśayet
"and sesame spread upon ground smeared with cow-dung, and he should be laid there."

प्रागुदक्शिरसं वापि मुखे स्वर्णं विनिः क्षेपेत् । शालग्रामशिला तत्र तुलसी च खगेश्वर
prāgudakśirasaṁ vāpi mukhe svarṇaṁ viniḥ kṣepet śālagrāmaśilā tatra tulasī ca khageśvara
"With his head toward the east or north, gold should be placed in his mouth. There, O lord of birds, a Shaligrama stone and tulasi"

विधेया सन्निधौ सर्पिर्दीपं प्रज्वालयेत्पुनः । नमो भगवते वासुदेवायेति जपस्तथा
vidheyā sannidhau sarpirdīpaṁ prajvālayetpunaḥ namo bhagavate vāsudevāyeti japastathā
"should be placed close by, and a lamp of ghee should be lit; and the mantra 'Namo bhagavate Vasudevaya' should be recited."

आदौ तु प्रणवं कृत्वा पूजादाने ततः स्मृते । समभ्यर्च्य हृषीकेशं पुष्पधूपादिभिस्ततः
ādau tu praṇavaṁ kṛtvā pūjādāne tataḥ smṛte samabhyarcya hṛṣīkeśaṁ puṣpadhūpādibhistataḥ
"First uttering the pranava, Om, worship and gifts should be offered as remembered; then, having duly worshipped Hrishikesha with flowers, incense, and the rest,"

प्रणिपातैः स्तवैः पुण्यैर्ध्या नयोगेन पूजयेत् । दत्त्वा दानं च विप्रेभ्यो दीनानाथेभ्य एव च
praṇipātaiḥ stavaiḥ puṇyairdhyā nayogena pūjayet dattvā dānaṁ ca viprebhyo dīnānāthebhya eva ca
"one should worship with prostrations, holy hymns, and the practice of meditation. Having given gifts to brahmins and to the poor and helpless,"

पुत्त्रे मित्रे कलत्रे च क्षेत्रधान्यधनादिषु । निवर्तयेन्ममत्वं च विष्णोः पादौ हृदि स्मरन्
puttre mitre kalatre ca kṣetradhānyadhanādiṣu nivartayenmamatvaṁ ca viṣṇoḥ pādau hṛdi smaran
"one should let go of attachment to son, friend, and wife, to fields, grain, and wealth, remembering Vishnu's feet within the heart."

उच्चैः पुरुषसूक्तं च यदि श्रेष्ठापदस्तदा । पुत्त्राद्याः प्रपठेयुस्ते म्रियमाणे निजे जने
uccaiḥ puruṣasūktaṁ ca yadi śreṣṭhāpadastadā puttrādyāḥ prapaṭheyuste mriyamāṇe nije jane
"If he holds the highest rank, the Purusha-sukta should be recited aloud; his sons and others should recite it for their own kinsman as he lies dying."

एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं कृत्यं मृत्यावुपस्थिते । फलमप्यस्य कृत्स्नस्य समासात्ते वदाम्यहम्
etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ kṛtyaṁ mṛtyāvupasthite phalamapyasya kṛtsnasya samāsātte vadāmyaham
"All this have I told you — the duty owed when death is at hand. I shall now tell you, in brief, the fruit of the whole of it."

स्नानेन शुचिताप्राप्तिरपावित्र्यहृतिस्ततः । ततो विष्णोः स्मृतिस्तस्य ज्ञानात्सर्वफलप्रदा
snānena śucitāprāptirapāvitryahṛtistataḥ tato viṣṇoḥ smṛtistasya jñānātsarvaphalapradā
"By bathing, purity is attained and impurity removed; then comes the remembrance of Vishnu, which, through knowledge, grants every fruit."

दर्भतूली नयेत्स्वर्गमातुरं तु न संशयः । तिलैर्दर्भैश्च निः क्षिप्तैः स्नानं क्रतुमयं भवेत्
darbhatūlī nayetsvargamāturaṁ tu na saṁśayaḥ tilairdarbhaiśca niḥ kṣiptaiḥ snānaṁ kratumayaṁ bhavet
"The tuft of darbha grass carries the dying man to heaven without doubt; the bathing performed with sesame and darbha spread out becomes as fruitful as a sacrifice."

ब्रह्मा विष्णुश्च रुद्रश्च श्रीर्हुताशस्तथैव च । मण्डले चोपतिष्ठन्ति तस्मात्कुर्वीत मण्डलम्
brahmā viṣṇuśca rudraśca śrīrhutāśastathaiva ca maṇḍale copatiṣṭhanti tasmātkurvīta maṇḍalam
"Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Shri, and Agni himself abide within that ritual circle; therefore the circle must be made."

प्रागुदग्वा कृतेनेह शिरसा लोकमुत्तमम् । व्रजते यदि पापस्याल्पत्वं पुंसो भवेत्खग
prāgudagvā kṛteneha śirasā lokamuttamam vrajate yadi pāpasyālpatvaṁ puṁso bhavetkhaga
"By having the head placed toward the east or north here, a man goes to the highest world; O bird, by this his sin is lessened."

पञ्चरत्ने मुखे मुक्ते जिवे ज्ञानं प्ररोहति । तुलसी ब्राह्मणा गावो विष्णुरेकादशी खग
pañcaratne mukhe mukte jive jñānaṁ prarohati tulasī brāhmaṇā gāvo viṣṇurekādaśī khaga
"By the placing and release of the five jewels in the mouth, knowledge dawns upon the tongue. O bird, tulasi, brahmins, cows, Vishnu, and Ekadashi —"

पञ्च प्रवहणान्येव भवाब्धौ मज्जतां नृणाम् । विष्णुरेकादशी गीता तुलसी विप्रधेनवः
pañca pravahaṇānyeva bhavābdhau majjatāṁ nṛṇām viṣṇurekādaśī gītā tulasī vipradhenavaḥ
"these five alone are the vessels for men sinking in the ocean of worldly existence. Vishnu, Ekadashi, the Gita, tulasi, brahmins, and cows —"

असारे दुर्गसंसारे षट्पदी भक्तिदायिनी । नमो भगवते वासुदेवायेति जपन्नरः
asāre durgasaṁsāre ṣaṭpadī bhaktidāyinī namo bhagavate vāsudevāyeti japannaraḥ
"in this insubstantial, hard-to-cross world, this six-fold formula grants devotion. The man who recites 'Namo bhagavate Vasudevaya',"
Verse 102 (garuda.2.32.102)
ओङ्कारपूर्वं सायुज्यं प्राप्नुयान्नात्र संशयः । पूजयापि च मल्लोकप्राप्तिराराद्दिवं व्रजेत्
oṅkārapūrvaṁ sāyujyaṁ prāpnuyānnātra saṁśayaḥ pūjayāpi ca mallokaprāptirārāddivaṁ vrajet
"preceded by Om, attains union with the divine without doubt. By worship too, my world is attained; he goes swiftly to heaven."
Verse 103 (garuda.2.32.103)
बन्धाभावे ममत्वेतु ज्ञानं पुरुषसूक्ततः । यस्ययस्याधिकत्वं तु साधनेष्वेषु काश्यप
bandhābhāve mamatvetu jñānaṁ puruṣasūktataḥ yasyayasyādhikatvaṁ tu sādhaneṣveṣu kāśyapa
"Where the bond of attachment is absent, knowledge arises through the Purusha-sukta. O Kashyapa, whichever of these means is practiced with greater intensity,"
Verse 104 (garuda.2.32.104)
तत्तत्फलस्याप्याधिक्यं भवतीत्यवधारय । दातव्यानि यथाशक्त्या प्रीतोऽसौ सर्वदा भवेत्
tattatphalasyāpyādhikyaṁ bhavatītyavadhāraya dātavyāni yathāśaktyā prīto'sau sarvadā bhavet
"its fruit becomes correspondingly greater — know this for certain. These gifts should be given according to one's ability, so that he remains ever content."
Verse 105 (garuda.2.32.105)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं स्नानादिषु फलं मया । ब्रह्माण्डे ये गुणाः सन्ति शरीरे ते व्यवस्थिताः
etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ snānādiṣu phalaṁ mayā brahmāṇḍe ye guṇāḥ santi śarīre te vyavasthitāḥ
"All this have I told you of the fruit of bathing and the rest. Whatever qualities exist in the cosmic egg are likewise present within the body."
Verse 106 (garuda.2.32.106)
पातालभूधरा लोकास्तथान्ये द्वीपसागराः । आदित्यादिग्रहाः सर्वे पिण्डमध्ये व्यवस्थिताः
pātālabhūdharā lokāstathānye dvīpasāgarāḥ ādityādigrahāḥ sarve piṇḍamadhye vyavasthitāḥ
"The nether worlds, the mountains, the other worlds, the continents and oceans; the sun and all the planets — all these are established within the body."
Verse 107 (garuda.2.32.107)
पादाधस्तु तलं ज्ञेयं पादोर्ध्वं वितलं तथा । जानुभ्यां सुतलं विद्धि सक्थिदेशे महातलम्
pādādhastu talaṁ jñeyaṁ pādordhvaṁ vitalaṁ tathā jānubhyāṁ sutalaṁ viddhi sakthideśe mahātalam
"Below the feet Tala should be known; above the feet, Vitala; at the knees, Sutala; at the region of the thighs, Mahatala."
Verse 108 (garuda.2.32.108)
तथा तलातलञ्चोरौ गुह्यदेशे रसातलम् । पातालं कटिसंस्थन्तु पादादौ लक्षयेद्बुधः
tathā talātalañcorau guhyadeśe rasātalam pātālaṁ kaṭisaṁsthantu pādādau lakṣayedbudhaḥ
"And at the thighs, Talatala; at the genital region, Rasatala; at the waist, Patala — the wise should trace this beginning from the feet."
Verse 109 (garuda.2.32.109)
भूर्लोकं नाभिमध्ये तु भुवर्लोकं तदूर्ध्वतः । स्वर्गलोकं हृदये विद्यात्कण्ठदेशे महस्तथा
bhūrlokaṁ nābhimadhye tu bhuvarlokaṁ tadūrdhvataḥ svargalokaṁ hṛdaye vidyātkaṇṭhadeśe mahastathā
"At the middle of the navel, Bhurloka; above it, Bhuvarloka; at the heart, Svargaloka; at the region of the throat, Maharloka should be known."
Verse 110 (garuda.2.32.110)
जनलोकं वक्त्रदेशे तपोलोकं ललाटके । सत्यलोकं महारन्ध्रे भुवनानि चतुर्दश
janalokaṁ vaktradeśe tapolokaṁ lalāṭake satyalokaṁ mahārandhre bhuvanāni caturdaśa
"At the region of the face, Janaloka; at the forehead, Tapoloka; at the crown-aperture, Satyaloka — thus the fourteen worlds are established within the body."
Verse 111 (garuda.2.32.111)
त्रिकोणे संस्थितो मेरुरधः कोणे च मन्दरः । दक्षिणे चैव कैलासो वामभागे हिमाचलः
trikoṇe saṁsthito meruradhaḥ koṇe ca mandaraḥ dakṣiṇe caiva kailāso vāmabhāge himācalaḥ
"At the triangle Mount Meru stands; at the lower corner, Mandara; to the south, Kailasa; on the left side, Himachala;"
Verse 112 (garuda.2.32.112)
निषधश्चोर्ध्वभागे च दक्षिणे गन्धमादनः । मलयो (रमणो) वामरेखायां सप्तैते कुलपर्वताः
niṣadhaścordhvabhāge ca dakṣiṇe gandhamādanaḥ malayo (ramaṇo) vāmarekhāyāṁ saptaite kulaparvatāḥ
"at the upper part, Nishadha; to the south, Gandhamadana; along the left line, Malaya — these are the seven principal mountains."
Verse 113 (garuda.2.32.113)
अस्थिस्थाने स्थितो जम्बूः शाको मज्जासु संस्थितः । कुशद्वीपः स्थितो मांसे क्रौञ्चद्वीपः शिरास्थितः
asthisthāne sthito jambūḥ śāko majjāsu saṁsthitaḥ kuśadvīpaḥ sthito māṁse krauñcadvīpaḥ śirāsthitaḥ
"At the place of the bones lies Jambu-dvipa; in the marrow, Shaka-dvipa; in the flesh, Kusha-dvipa; in the sinews, Krauncha-dvipa."
Verse 114 (garuda.2.32.114)
त्वचायां शाल्मलिर्द्वीपो प्लक्षः रोम्णां च सञ्चये । नखस्थः पुष्करद्वीपः सागरास्तदनन्तरम्
tvacāyāṁ śālmalirdvīpo plakṣaḥ romṇāṁ ca sañcaye nakhasthaḥ puṣkaradvīpaḥ sāgarāstadanantaram
"In the skin, Shalmali-dvipa; in the mass of body-hair, Plaksha-dvipa; in the nails, Pushkara-dvipa — the oceans follow next."
Verse 115 (garuda.2.32.115)
क्षारोदश्च तथा मूत्रे क्षारे क्षीरोदसागरः । सुरोदधिश्च श्लेष्मस्थः मज्जायां घृतसागरः
kṣārodaśca tathā mūtre kṣāre kṣīrodasāgaraḥ surodadhiśca śleṣmasthaḥ majjāyāṁ ghṛtasāgaraḥ
"In the urine, the Salt Ocean; and in the salty fluid, the Ocean of Milk; in the phlegm, the Ocean of Wine; in the marrow, the Ocean of Ghee;"
Verse 116 (garuda.2.32.116)
रसोदधिं रसे विद्याच्छोणिते दधिसागरम् । स्वादुलं लम्बिकास्थाने गर्भोदं शुक्रसंस्थितम्
rasodadhiṁ rase vidyācchoṇite dadhisāgaram svādulaṁ lambikāsthāne garbhodaṁ śukrasaṁsthitam
"in the bodily fluids, the Ocean of Rasa; in the blood, the Ocean of Curds; at the region of the throat, the Ocean of Sweet Water; and in the semen, the Ocean of Garbhodaka."
Verse 117 (garuda.2.32.117)
नादचक्रे स्थितः सूर्यो बिन्दुचक्रे च चन्द्रमाः । लोचनस्थः कुजो ज्ञेयो हृदये च बुधः स्मृतः
nādacakre sthitaḥ sūryo binducakre ca candramāḥ locanasthaḥ kujo jñeyo hṛdaye ca budhaḥ smṛtaḥ
"In the wheel of sound resides the sun; in the wheel of the drop, the moon; in the eyes, Mars should be known; in the heart, Mercury is remembered."
Verse 118 (garuda.2.32.118)
विष्णुस्थाने गुरुं विद्याच्छ्रुक्रे शुक्रो व्यवस्थितः । नाभिस्थाने स्थितो मन्दो मुखे राहुः स्थितः सदा
viṣṇusthāne guruṁ vidyācchrukre śukro vyavasthitaḥ nābhisthāne sthito mando mukhe rāhuḥ sthitaḥ sadā
"At the seat of Vishnu, the crown, Jupiter should be known; in the semen, the planet Venus resides; at the place of the navel, Saturn; in the face, Rahu ever resides."
Verse 119 (garuda.2.32.119)
पायु (द) स्थाने स्थितः केतुः शरीरे ग्रहमण्डलम् । विभक्तञ्च समाख्यातमापादतलमस्तकम्
pāyu (da) sthāne sthitaḥ ketuḥ śarīre grahamaṇḍalam vibhaktañca samākhyātamāpādatalamastakam
"At the place of the anus resides Ketu — thus is the wheel of planets set within the body. From the sole of the foot to the crown of the head, this division has been declared."
Verse 120 (garuda.2.32.120)
उत्पन्ना ये हि संसारे म्रियन्ते ते न संशयः । बुभुक्षा च तृषा रौद्रा दाहोद्भूता च मूर्छना
utpannā ye hi saṁsāre mriyante te na saṁśayaḥ bubhukṣā ca tṛṣā raudrā dāhodbhūtā ca mūrchanā
"Those who are born into this world of samsara certainly die; fierce hunger and thirst, and the swoon born of burning fever —"
Verse 121 (garuda.2.32.121)
यत्र पीडास्त्विमा रौद्रास्ता वै वृश्चिकदंशजाः । विनाशः पूर्णकाले च जायते सर्वदेहिनाम्
yatra pīḍāstvimā raudrāstā vai vṛścikadaṁśajāḥ vināśaḥ pūrṇakāle ca jāyate sarvadehinām
"wherever these fierce torments occur, they are like the sting of a scorpion; when the appointed time is full, destruction comes to every embodied being."
Verse 122 (garuda.2.32.122)
अग्रे अग्रे हि धावन्ति यमलोकगतस्यवै । तप्तवालुकमध्येन प्रज्वलद्वह्निमध्यतः
agre agre hi dhāvanti yamalokagatasyavai taptavālukamadhyena prajvaladvahnimadhyataḥ
"They run on ahead of the one going to Yama's world, through the midst of heated sand and blazing fire,"
Verse 123 (garuda.2.32.123)
केशग्राहैः समाक्रान्ता नीयन्ते यमकिङ्करैः । पापिष्ठास्त्वधमास्तार्क्ष्य दयाधर्मविविर्जिताः
keśagrāhaiḥ samākrāntā nīyante yamakiṅkaraiḥ pāpiṣṭhāstvadhamāstārkṣya dayādharmavivirjitāḥ
"seized by the hair and dragged along by Yama's servants. O Tarkshya, those who are utterly sinful, base, and devoid of compassion and dharma,"
Verse 124 (garuda.2.32.124)
यमलोके वसन्त्येते कुट्यां जन्म न विद्यते । एवं सञ्जायते तार्क्ष्य मर्त्ये जन्तुः स्वकर्मभिः
yamaloke vasantyete kuṭyāṁ janma na vidyate evaṁ sañjāyate tārkṣya martye jantuḥ svakarmabhiḥ
"dwell in Yama's world itself, and for them there is no rebirth in a proper home. Thus, O Tarkshya, does a mortal being come to be through its own deeds."
Verse 125 (garuda.2.32.125)
उत्पन्ना ये हि संसारे म्रियन्ते ते न संशयः । आयुः कर्म च वित्तञ्च विद्या निधनमेव च
utpannā ye hi saṁsāre mriyante te na saṁśayaḥ āyuḥ karma ca vittañca vidyā nidhanameva ca
"Those who are born into this world certainly die. Lifespan, deeds, wealth, learning, and death itself —"
Verse 126 (garuda.2.32.126)
पञ्चैतानि हि सृज्यन्ते गर्भस्थस्यैव देहिनः । कर्मणा जायते जन्तुः कर्मणैव प्रलीयते
pañcaitāni hi sṛjyante garbhasthasyaiva dehinaḥ karmaṇā jāyate jantuḥ karmaṇaiva pralīyate
"these five alone are fixed for the being while it is still in the womb. A creature is born through its deeds, and through deeds alone it perishes;"
Verse 127 (garuda.2.32.127)
सुखं दुःखं भयं क्षेमं कर्मणैवाभिपद्यते । अधोमुखं चोर्ध्वपादं गर्भाद्वायुः प्रकर्षति
sukhaṁ duḥkhaṁ bhayaṁ kṣemaṁ karmaṇaivābhipadyate adhomukhaṁ cordhvapādaṁ garbhādvāyuḥ prakarṣati
"pleasure, pain, fear, and well-being are all attained through deeds alone. Head down and feet up, the wind draws it out from the womb."
Verse 128 (garuda.2.32.128)
जन्मतो वैष्णवी माया संमोहयति सत्वरम् । स्वकर्मकृतसम्बन्धो जन्तुर्जन्म प्रपद्यते
janmato vaiṣṇavī māyā saṁmohayati satvaram svakarmakṛtasambandho janturjanma prapadyate
"The moment it is born, the deluding power of Vishnu swiftly bewilders it; through the bond forged by its own deeds, the being undergoes birth once more."
Verse 129 (garuda.2.32.129)
सुकृतादुत्तमो भोगभोग्यवान् सुकुले भवेत् । यथायथा दुष्कृतं तत्कुले हीने प्रजायते
sukṛtāduttamo bhogabhogyavān sukule bhavet yathāyathā duṣkṛtaṁ tatkule hīne prajāyate
"Through good deeds, the fortunate being, possessed of things to be enjoyed, is born into a good family; in proportion to his evil deeds, he is born into a lowly family,"
Verse 130 (garuda.2.32.130)
दरिद्रो व्याधितो मूर्खः पापकृद्दुःखभाजनम् । अतः परं किमर्थं ते कथयामि खगेश्वर
daridro vyādhito mūrkhaḥ pāpakṛdduḥkhabhājanam ataḥ paraṁ kimarthaṁ te kathayāmi khageśvara
"poor, diseased, foolish, sinful, and a vessel of suffering. O lord of birds, what more shall I tell you beyond this?"
