Verse 1 (garuda.2.40.1)

तार्क्ष्य उवाच । भगवन्ब्राह्मणाः केचिदपमृत्युवशं गताः । कथं तेषां भवेन्मार्गः किं स्थानं का गतिर्भवेत्

tārkṣya uvāca bhagavanbrāhmaṇāḥ kecidapamṛtyuvaśaṁ gatāḥ kathaṁ teṣāṁ bhavenmārgaḥ kiṁ sthānaṁ kā gatirbhavet

Tarkshya said: "O Lord, some brahmins fall into the grip of an untimely death — what becomes of their path? What is their abode, and what their destiny?"

Verse 2 (garuda.2.40.2)

किञ्च युक्तं भवेत्तेषां विधानं वापि कीदृशम् । तदहं श्रोतुमिच्छामि ब्रूहि मे मधुसूदन

kiñca yuktaṁ bhavetteṣāṁ vidhānaṁ vāpi kīdṛśam tadahaṁ śrotumicchāmi brūhi me madhusūdana

"And what fitting procedure should there be for them? I wish to hear this — tell me, O Madhusudana."

Verse 3 (garuda.2.40.3)

श्रीकृष्ण उवाच । प्रेतीभूते द्विजातीनां सम्भूते मृत्युवैकृते । तेषां मार्गगतिस्थानं विधानं कथयाम्यहम्

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca pretībhūte dvijātīnāṁ sambhūte mṛtyuvaikṛte teṣāṁ mārgagatisthānaṁ vidhānaṁ kathayāmyaham

Shri Krishna said: "When twice-born men become pretas, through an abnormal death, I shall tell you of their path, destiny, abode, and the proper procedure."

Verse 4 (garuda.2.40.4)

शृणु तार्क्ष्य परं गोप्यं जाते दुर्मरणे सति । लङ्घनैर्ये मृता विप्रा दंष्ट्रिभिश्चाभिघातिताः

śṛṇu tārkṣya paraṁ gopyaṁ jāte durmaraṇe sati laṅghanairye mṛtā viprā daṁṣṭribhiścābhighātitāḥ

"Listen, Tarkshya, to a supreme secret: when an evil death occurs — brahmins who died through transgression, struck down by fangs,"

Verse 5 (garuda.2.40.5)

कण्ठग्राह विमग्नानां क्षीणानां तुण्डघातिनाम् । विषाग्निवृषविप्रेभ्यो विषूच्या चात्मघातकाः

kaṇṭhagrāha vimagnānāṁ kṣīṇānāṁ tuṇḍaghātinām viṣāgnivṛṣaviprebhyo viṣūcyā cātmaghātakāḥ

"those seized by the throat and drowned, the emaciated, those struck in the face; those who died of poison, fire, a bull, or a brahmin's curse, or of cholera, and those who took their own lives,"

Verse 6 (garuda.2.40.6)

पतनोद्वन्धनजलैर्मृतानां शृणु संस्थितिम् । यान्ति ते नरके घोरे ये च म्लेच्छादिभिर्हताः

patanodvandhanajalairmṛtānāṁ śṛṇu saṁsthitim yānti te narake ghore ye ca mlecchādibhirhatāḥ

"those who died by falling, by hanging, or by drowning — hear their condition; they go to dreadful hell, as do those slain by barbarians,"

Verse 7 (garuda.2.40.7)

श्वशृगालादिसंस्पृष्टा अदग्धाः कृमिसंङ्कुलाः । उल्लङ्घिता मृता ये च महारोगैश्च पीडिताः

śvaśṛgālādisaṁspṛṣṭā adagdhāḥ kṛmisaṁṅkulāḥ ullaṅghitā mṛtā ye ca mahārogaiśca pīḍitāḥ

"those touched by dogs and jackals, left unburned, swarming with worms; those who died through transgression, and those afflicted by great diseases,"

Verse 8 (garuda.2.40.8)

अभिसस्तास्तथाव्यङ्गा ये च पापान्नपोषिताः । चण्डालादुदकात्सर्पाद्ब्राह्मणाद्वैद्युताग्नितः

abhisastāstathāvyaṅgā ye ca pāpānnapoṣitāḥ caṇḍālādudakātsarpādbrāhmaṇādvaidyutāgnitaḥ

"those who were accursed and deformed, those nourished by sinful food; those who died by an outcaste, by water, by a snake, by a brahmin's curse, by lightning or fire,"

Verse 9 (garuda.2.40.9)

दष्ट्रिभ्यश्च पशुभ्यश्च वृक्षादिपतनान्मृताः । उदक्यामूतकीशूद्रारजकीसङ्गदूषिताः

daṣṭribhyaśca paśubhyaśca vṛkṣādipatanānmṛtāḥ udakyāmūtakīśūdrārajakīsaṅgadūṣitāḥ

"by the fangs of beasts, or by the falling of a tree and the like; those defiled by contact with a menstruating woman, a woman who has miscarried, a shudra woman, or a washerwoman —"

Verse 10 (garuda.2.40.10)

तेन पापेन नरकान्मुक्ताः प्रेतत्वभागिनः । न तेषां कारयेद्दाहं सूतकं नोदकक्रियाम्

tena pāpena narakānmuktāḥ pretatvabhāginaḥ na teṣāṁ kārayeddāhaṁ sūtakaṁ nodakakriyām

"freed from hell by that very suffering, they share in the state of pretahood; for them cremation, sutaka, and the water-rite should not be performed,"

Verse 11 (garuda.2.40.11)

न विधानं मृताद्यं च न कुर्यादौर्ध्वदैहिकम् । तेषां तार्क्ष्य प्रकुर्वीत नारायणबलिक्रियाम्

na vidhānaṁ mṛtādyaṁ ca na kuryādaurdhvadaihikam teṣāṁ tārkṣya prakurvīta nārāyaṇabalikriyām

"nor any other death-rite, nor the after-death ceremony. O Tarkshya, for them the rite of Narayana-bali should be performed instead."

Verse 12 (garuda.2.40.12)

सर्वलोकहितार्थाय शृणु पापभयापहाम् । षण्मासं ब्राह्मणे दाहस्त्रिमासं क्षत्त्रिये मतः

sarvalokahitārthāya śṛṇu pāpabhayāpahām ṣaṇmāsaṁ brāhmaṇe dāhastrimāsaṁ kṣattriye mataḥ

"For the good of the whole world, hear this rite that removes the fear of sin: cremation is prescribed after six months for a brahmin, three months for a kshatriya,"

Verse 13 (garuda.2.40.13)

सार्ध मासं तु वैश्यस्य सद्यः शूद्रे विधीयते । गङ्गायां यमुनायाञ्च नैमिषे पुष्करेऽथ च

sārdha māsaṁ tu vaiśyasya sadyaḥ śūdre vidhīyate gaṅgāyāṁ yamunāyāñca naimiṣe puṣkare'tha ca

"a month and a half for a vaishya, and immediately for a shudra. On the Ganga, on the Yamuna, at Naimisha, or at Pushkara,"

Verse 14 (garuda.2.40.14)

तडागे जलूपूर्णे वा ह्रदे वा विमलोदके । वाप्यां कूपे गवां गोष्ठे गृहे वा प्रतिमालये

taḍāge jalūpūrṇe vā hrade vā vimalodake vāpyāṁ kūpe gavāṁ goṣṭhe gṛhe vā pratimālaye

"in a tank full of water, or in a lake of clear water, at a step-well, a well, a cow-pen, a house, or a temple,"

Verse 15 (garuda.2.40.15)

कृष्णाग्रे कारयेद्विप्र बलिं नारायणाह्वयम् । प्रेताय तर्पणं कार्यं मन्त्रैः पौराणवैदिकैः

kṛṣṇāgre kārayedvipra baliṁ nārāyaṇāhvayam pretāya tarpaṇaṁ kāryaṁ mantraiḥ paurāṇavaidikaiḥ

"before a black offering, a brahmin should perform the oblation called after Narayana; the tarpana for the preta should be performed with mantras both Puranic and Vedic."

Verse 16 (garuda.2.40.16)

सर्वौषध्यक्षतैर्मिश्रैर्विष्णुमुद्दिश्य तर्पयेत् । कार्यं पुरुषसूक्तेन मन्त्रैर्वा वैष्णवैरपि

sarvauṣadhyakṣatairmiśrairviṣṇumuddiśya tarpayet kāryaṁ puruṣasūktena mantrairvā vaiṣṇavairapi

"The tarpana, mixed with every herb and unbroken rice, should be dedicated to Vishnu; it should be performed with the Purusha-sukta or with Vaishnava mantras as well."

Verse 17 (garuda.2.40.17)

दक्षिणाभिमुखो भूत्वा प्रेतं विष्णुरिति स्मरेत् । अनादिनिधनो देवः शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः

dakṣiṇābhimukho bhūtvā pretaṁ viṣṇuriti smaret anādinidhano devaḥ śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ

"Facing south, one should remember the preta as Vishnu himself — the god without beginning or end, bearer of conch, discus, and mace,"

Verse 18 (garuda.2.40.18)

अव्ययः पुण्डरीकाक्षः प्रेतमोक्षप्रदो भवेत् । तर्पणस्यावसाने च वीतरागो विमत्सरः

avyayaḥ puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ pretamokṣaprado bhavet tarpaṇasyāvasāne ca vītarāgo vimatsaraḥ

"imperishable, lotus-eyed — may he become the giver of liberation to the preta. At the end of the tarpana, free of passion and envy,"

Verse 19 (garuda.2.40.19)

जितेन्द्रियमना भूत्वा शुचिप्मान्धर्मतत्परः । दानधर्मरतः शान्तः प्रणम्य वाग्यतः शुचिः

jitendriyamanā bhūtvā śucipmāndharmatatparaḥ dānadharmarataḥ śāntaḥ praṇamya vāgyataḥ śuciḥ

"with the senses conquered, pure of mind, devoted to dharma, intent on giving, tranquil, having bowed, restrained in speech, and purified,"

Verse 20 (garuda.2.40.20)

यजमानो भबेत्तत्र शुचिर्वन्धुसमन्वितः । भक्त्या तत्र प्रकुर्वीत श्राद्धत्येकादशैव तु

yajamāno bhabettatra śucirvandhusamanvitaḥ bhaktyā tatra prakurvīta śrāddhatyekādaśaiva tu

"the sacrificer should be present there, pure, together with his kinsmen; there he should perform, with devotion, the eleven shraddhas,"

Verse 21 (garuda.2.40.21)

सर्वकर्मविपाकेन एकैकाग्रे समाहितः । तोयव्रीहियवान् षष्ट्या गोधूमांश्च प्रियङ्गुकान्

sarvakarmavipākena ekaikāgre samāhitaḥ toyavrīhiyavān ṣaṣṭyā godhūmāṁśca priyaṅgukān

"single-minded through the ripening of every deed — water, rice, and sixty measures of barley, wheat, and millet,"

Verse 22 (garuda.2.40.22)

हविष्यान्नं शुभं मुद्रां छत्रोष्णीषे च चलेकम् । दापयेत्सर्वसस्यानि क्षीरक्षौद्रयुतानि च

haviṣyānnaṁ śubhaṁ mudrāṁ chatroṣṇīṣe ca calekam dāpayetsarvasasyāni kṣīrakṣaudrayutāni ca

"auspicious oblation-food, a ring, an umbrella and turban together — all grains should be given, along with milk and honey."

Verse 23 (garuda.2.40.23)

वस्त्रोपानहसंयुक्तं दद्यादष्टविधं पदम् । दापयेत्सर्वविप्रेभ्यो न कुर्यात्पङ्क्तिबन्धनम्

vastropānahasaṁyuktaṁ dadyādaṣṭavidhaṁ padam dāpayetsarvaviprebhyo na kuryātpaṅktibandhanam

"The eightfold set of items should be given together with garments and sandals; they should be given to all the brahmins, but a fixed row of recipients should not be formed."

Verse 24 (garuda.2.40.24)

भूमौ स्थितेषु पिण्डेषु गन्धपुष्पाक्षतान्वितम् । शङ्खपात्रे तथा ताम्रे तर्पणञ्च पृथक्पृथक्

bhūmau sthiteṣu piṇḍeṣu gandhapuṣpākṣatānvitam śaṅkhapātre tathā tāmre tarpaṇañca pṛthakpṛthak

"With the pindas placed upon the ground, together with scent, flowers, and unbroken rice, the tarpana should be performed separately in a conch-shell or copper vessel."

Verse 25 (garuda.2.40.25)

ध्यानधारणसंयुक्तो जानुभ्यामवनिं गतः । दातव्यं सर्वविप्रेभ्यो वेदशास्त्रविधानतः

dhyānadhāraṇasaṁyukto jānubhyāmavaniṁ gataḥ dātavyaṁ sarvaviprebhyo vedaśāstravidhānataḥ

"United in meditative concentration, kneeling upon the ground on both knees, one should give to all the brahmins according to the rule of Vedic scripture."

Verse 26 (garuda.2.40.26)

ऋचा वै दापयेदर्घ्यमेकोद्दिष्टे पृथक्पृथक् । आपोदेवीर्मधुमतीरादिपीठे प्रकल्पितम्

ṛcā vai dāpayedarghyamekoddiṣṭe pṛthakpṛthak āpodevīrmadhumatīrādipīṭhe prakalpitam

"With Vedic verses, arghya should be offered separately in the ekoddishta rite — with the mantra 'Apo devir madhumatih', resolved upon at the first seat,"

Verse 27 (garuda.2.40.27)

उपयामगृहीतोऽसि द्वितीयेऽर्घं निवेदयेत् । येनापावकचक्षुषा तृतीये च सकल्पितम्

upayāmagṛhīto'si dvitīye'rghaṁ nivedayet yenāpāvakacakṣuṣā tṛtīye ca sakalpitam

"at the second, with 'Upayama-grihito'si' the arghya is offered; at the third, resolved upon with 'Yenapavaka-chakshusha',"

Verse 28 (garuda.2.40.28)

ये देवासश्चतुर्थे तु समुद्रं गच्छ पञ्चमे । अग्निर्ज्योति स्तथा षष्ठे हिरण्यगर्भः सप्तमे

ye devāsaścaturthe tu samudraṁ gaccha pañcame agnirjyoti stathā ṣaṣṭhe hiraṇyagarbhaḥ saptame

"at the fourth, 'Ye devasah'; at the fifth, 'Samudram gaccha'; at the sixth, 'Agnir jyotih'; at the seventh, 'Hiranyagarbhah',"

Verse 29 (garuda.2.40.29)

यमाय त्वाष्टमे ज्ञेयं यज्जग्रन्नवमे तथा । दशमे याः फलिनीति पिण्डे चैकादशे ततः

yamāya tvāṣṭame jñeyaṁ yajjagrannavame tathā daśame yāḥ phalinīti piṇḍe caikādaśe tataḥ

"at the eighth, 'Yamaya tva' should be known; at the ninth, 'Yaj jagrat'; at the tenth, 'Yah phalinih'; and then at the eleventh, upon the pinda,"

Verse 30 (garuda.2.40.30)

भद्रं कर्णेभिरिति च कुर्यात्पिण्डविसर्जनम् । कृत्वैकादशदेवत्यं श्राद्धं कुर्यात्परेऽहनि

bhadraṁ karṇebhiriti ca kuryātpiṇḍavisarjanam kṛtvaikādaśadevatyaṁ śrāddhaṁ kuryātpare'hani

"the dismissal of the pinda should be performed with the mantra 'Bhadram karnebhih'. Having done this rite for the eleven deities, the shraddha should be performed the following day."

Verse 31 (garuda.2.40.31)

विप्रानावाहयेत्पञ्च चतुर्वेदविशारदान् । विद्याशीलगुणोपेतान्स्व कीयाञ्छीलसत्तमान् । अब्यङ्गान्सप्रशस्तांश्च न त्वर्ज्यान्कदाचन

viprānāvāhayetpañca caturvedaviśāradān vidyāśīlaguṇopetānsva kīyāñchīlasattamān abyaṅgānsapraśastāṁśca na tvarjyānkadācana

"Five brahmins should be invoked, well-versed in all four Vedas, endowed with learning, character, and virtue, of one's own excellent lineage, free of any bodily defect, and praiseworthy — never unworthy ones."

Verse 32 (garuda.2.40.32)

विष्णुः स्वर्णमयः कार्यो रुदस्ताम्रमयस्तथा । ब्रह्मा रूप्यमयस्तद्वद्यमो लोहमयो भवेत्

viṣṇuḥ svarṇamayaḥ kāryo rudastāmramayastathā brahmā rūpyamayastadvadyamo lohamayo bhavet

"Vishnu should be made of gold, and Rudra likewise of copper; Brahma should be made of silver, and Yama should be made of iron;"

Verse 33 (garuda.2.40.33)

सीसकं तु भवेत्प्रेतं त्वथ वा दर्भकं तथा । शन्नोदेवीति मन्त्रेण गोविन्दं पश्चिमे न्यसेत्

sīsakaṁ tu bhavetpretaṁ tvatha vā darbhakaṁ tathā śannodevīti mantreṇa govindaṁ paścime nyaset

"the preta should be made of lead, or else of darbha grass. With the mantra 'Shan no devi', Govinda should be placed in the west."

Verse 34 (garuda.2.40.34)

अग्न आयाहीति रुद्रमुत्तरत्रैव विन्यसेत् । अग्निमीळेति मन्त्रेण पूर्वेणैव प्रजापतिम्

agna āyāhīti rudramuttaratraiva vinyaset agnimīḻeti mantreṇa pūrveṇaiva prajāpatim

"With 'Agna ayahi', Rudra should be placed in the north; with the mantra 'Agnim ile', Prajapati in the east;"

Verse 35 (garuda.2.40.35)

इषेत्वोर्जोति मन्त्रेण दक्षिणे स्थापयेद्यमम् । मध्ये मण्डलकं कृत्वा स्थाप्यो दर्भमयो नरः

iṣetvorjoti mantreṇa dakṣiṇe sthāpayedyamam madhye maṇḍalakaṁ kṛtvā sthāpyo darbhamayo naraḥ

"with the mantra 'Ishe tvorje', Yama should be placed in the south. Having made a circle in the middle, a figure made of darbha should be placed there,"

Verse 36 (garuda.2.40.36)

ब्रह्मा विष्णुस्तथा रुद्रो यमः प्रेतश्च पञ्चमः । पृथक्कुम्भे ततः स्थाप्याः पञ्चरत्नसमन्विताः

brahmā viṣṇustathā rudro yamaḥ pretaśca pañcamaḥ pṛthakkumbhe tataḥ sthāpyāḥ pañcaratnasamanvitāḥ

"Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Yama, and the preta as the fifth — these should be placed each in a separate vessel, furnished with the five jewels,"

Verse 37 (garuda.2.40.37)

वस्त्रयज्ञोपवीतानि पृथङ्मुद्रापराणि च । जपं कर्यात्पृथक्तत्र ब्रह्मादौ देवतासु च

vastrayajñopavītāni pṛthaṅmudrāparāṇi ca japaṁ karyātpṛthaktatra brahmādau devatāsu ca

"with garments and sacred threads, and each with its own separate coin. There, japa should be performed separately for Brahma and the other deities."

Verse 38 (garuda.2.40.38)

पञ्च श्राद्धानि कुर्वीत देवतानां यथाविधि । जलधारां ततो दद्यत्पीठेपीठे पृथक्पृथक्

pañca śrāddhāni kurvīta devatānāṁ yathāvidhi jaladhārāṁ tato dadyatpīṭhepīṭhe pṛthakpṛthak

"The five shraddhas for the deities should be performed according to rule. Then a stream of water should be given at each seat separately,"

Verse 39 (garuda.2.40.39)

शङ्खे वा ताम्रपात्रे वा अलाभे मृन्मयेऽपि वा । तिलोदकं समादाय सर्वौषधिसमन्वितम्

śaṅkhe vā tāmrapātre vā alābhe mṛnmaye'pi vā tilodakaṁ samādāya sarvauṣadhisamanvitam

"in a conch, in a copper vessel, or, if unavailable, even in an earthen one; taking sesame-water together with every herb,"

Verse 40 (garuda.2.40.40)

आसनोपानहौ च्छत्रं मुद्रिका च कमण्डलुः । भाजनं भाजनाधारं वस्त्राण्यष्टविधं पदम्

āsanopānahau cchatraṁ mudrikā ca kamaṇḍaluḥ bhājanaṁ bhājanādhāraṁ vastrāṇyaṣṭavidhaṁ padam

"a seat, sandals, an umbrella, a ring, a water-pot; a vessel and its stand, garments, and the eightfold set of items,"

Verse 41 (garuda.2.40.41)

ताम्रपात्रं तिलैः पूर्णं सहिरण्यं सदक्षिणम् । दद्याद्ब्राह्मणमुख्याय विधियुक्तं खगेश्वर

tāmrapātraṁ tilaiḥ pūrṇaṁ sahiraṇyaṁ sadakṣiṇam dadyādbrāhmaṇamukhyāya vidhiyuktaṁ khageśvara

"a copper vessel filled with sesame, together with gold and a fee — O lord of birds, all this should be given, according to rule, to the foremost brahmin."

Verse 42 (garuda.2.40.42)

ऋग्वेदपारगे दद्याज्जातसस्यां वसुन्धराम् । यजुर्वेदमये विप्रे गाञ्च दद्यात्पयस्विनीम्

ṛgvedapārage dadyājjātasasyāṁ vasundharām yajurvedamaye vipre gāñca dadyātpayasvinīm

"To one versed in the Rig Veda, fertile land should be given; to a brahmin skilled in the Yajur Veda, a milk-giving cow should be given."

Verse 43 (garuda.2.40.43)

सामगाय शिवोद्देशात्प्रदद्यात्कलधौतकम् । यमोद्देशात्तिलांल्लोहं ततो दद्याच्च दक्षिणाम्

sāmagāya śivoddeśātpradadyātkaladhautakam yamoddeśāttilāṁllohaṁ tato dadyācca dakṣiṇām

"To a singer of the Sama Veda, refined gold should be given, dedicated to Shiva; dedicated to Yama, sesame and iron should be given, and then a fee besides."

Verse 44 (garuda.2.40.44)

पश्चात्पुत्तलकं कार्यं सर्वौषधिसमन्वितम् । पलाशस्य च वृन्तानां विभागं शृणु काश्यप

paścātputtalakaṁ kāryaṁ sarvauṣadhisamanvitam palāśasya ca vṛntānāṁ vibhāgaṁ śṛṇu kāśyapa

"Afterward, an effigy furnished with every herb should be made. Hear now, O Kashyapa, of the division of palasha leaf-stalks for it."

Verse 45 (garuda.2.40.45)

कृष्णाजिनं समास्तीर्य कुशैश्च पुरुषाकृतिम् । शतत्रयेण षष्ट्या च वृन्तैः प्रोक्तोऽस्थिसञ्चयः

kṛṣṇājinaṁ samāstīrya kuśaiśca puruṣākṛtim śatatrayeṇa ṣaṣṭyā ca vṛntaiḥ prokto'sthisañcayaḥ

"Having spread a black antelope skin and darbha grass, a human figure should be formed; the gathering of bones is declared to be made with three hundred and sixty leaf-stalks."

Verse 46 (garuda.2.40.46)

विन्यस्य तानि वृन्तानि अङ्गेष्वेषु पृथक्पृथक् । चत्वारिंशच्छिरोदेशे ग्रीवायां दश विन्यसेत्

vinyasya tāni vṛntāni aṅgeṣveṣu pṛthakpṛthak catvāriṁśacchirodeśe grīvāyāṁ daśa vinyaset

"Placing those stalks separately upon these limbs — forty at the region of the head, ten should be placed at the neck,"

Verse 47 (garuda.2.40.47)

विंशत्युरः स्थले दद्याद्विंशतिं जठरेऽपि च । बाहुयुग्मे शतं दद्यात्कटि देशे च विंशतिम्

viṁśatyuraḥ sthale dadyādviṁśatiṁ jaṭhare'pi ca bāhuyugme śataṁ dadyātkaṭi deśe ca viṁśatim

"twenty at the chest, and twenty at the belly as well; a hundred for the two arms, and twenty at the waist region."

Verse 48 (garuda.2.40.48)

ऊरुद्वये शतञ्चापि त्रिंशज्जङ्घाद्वये न्यसेत् । दद्याच्चतुष्टयं शिश्ने षड्दद्याद्वृषणद्वये । दश पादाङ्गुलीभागे एवमस्थीनि विन्यसेत्

ūrudvaye śatañcāpi triṁśajjaṅghādvaye nyaset dadyāccatuṣṭayaṁ śiśne ṣaḍdadyādvṛṣaṇadvaye daśa pādāṅgulībhāge evamasthīni vinyaset

"A hundred for the two thighs as well, thirty should be placed for the two shins; four for the male organ, six for the two testicles; ten at the toes — thus the bones should be arranged."

Verse 49 (garuda.2.40.49)

नारिकेलं शिरः स्थाने तुम्बं दद्याच्च तालुके । पञ्चरत्नं मुखे दद्याज्जिह्वायां कदलीफलम्

nārikelaṁ śiraḥ sthāne tumbaṁ dadyācca tāluke pañcaratnaṁ mukhe dadyājjihvāyāṁ kadalīphalam

"A coconut at the place of the head, a gourd should be given for the palate; the five jewels in the mouth, a plantain fruit for the tongue,"

Verse 50 (garuda.2.40.50)

अन्त्रेषु नालकं दद्याद्बालकं प्राण एव च । वसायीं मेदकं दद्याद्गोमूत्रेण तु मूत्रकम्

antreṣu nālakaṁ dadyādbālakaṁ prāṇa eva ca vasāyīṁ medakaṁ dadyādgomūtreṇa tu mūtrakam

"a hollow reed for the intestines, a small token at the place of the life-breath; fat for the marrow, and cow's urine given for the urine."

Verse 51 (garuda.2.40.51)

गन्धकं धातवो देयो हरितालं मनः शिला । रेतः स्थाने पारदञ्च पुरीषे पित्तलं तथा

gandhakaṁ dhātavo deyo haritālaṁ manaḥ śilā retaḥ sthāne pāradañca purīṣe pittalaṁ tathā

"Sulfur for the bodily constituents, orpiment for the brain; mercury at the place of semen, and brass at the place of feces."

Verse 52 (garuda.2.40.52)

मनः शिलां तथा गात्रे तिलकल्कञ्च सन्धिषु । यवपिष्टं तथा मांसे मधु वै क्षौद्रमेव च

manaḥ śilāṁ tathā gātre tilakalkañca sandhiṣu yavapiṣṭaṁ tathā māṁse madhu vai kṣaudrameva ca

"Realgar upon the limbs as well, and a paste of sesame at the joints; ground barley for the flesh, and honey too should be given."

Verse 53 (garuda.2.40.53)

केशेषु वै वटजटा त्वचि दद्यान्मृगत्वचम् । कर्णयोस्तालपत्त्रञ्च स्तनयोश्चैव गुञ्जिकाः

keśeṣu vai vaṭajaṭā tvaci dadyānmṛgatvacam karṇayostālapattrañca stanayoścaiva guñjikāḥ

"The aerial roots of the banyan for the hair, deerskin should be given for the skin; palm leaves for the two ears, and gunja seeds for the two breasts;"

Verse 54 (garuda.2.40.54)

नासायां शतपत्त्रं च कमलं नाभिमण्डले । वृन्ताकं वृषणद्वन्द्वे लिङ्गे स्याद्गृञ्जनं शुभम्

nāsāyāṁ śatapattraṁ ca kamalaṁ nābhimaṇḍale vṛntākaṁ vṛṣaṇadvandve liṅge syādgṛñjanaṁ śubham

"a hundred-petaled lotus for the nose, and a lotus at the navel-region; an eggplant for the two testicles, and an onion, auspicious, for the male organ."

Verse 55 (garuda.2.40.55)

घृतं नाभ्यां प्रदेयं स्यात्कौपीने च त्रपु स्मृतम् । मौक्तिकं स्तनयोर्मूर्ध्नि कुङ्कुमेन विलेपनम्

ghṛtaṁ nābhyāṁ pradeyaṁ syātkaupīne ca trapu smṛtam mauktikaṁ stanayormūrdhni kuṅkumena vilepanam

"Ghee should be given at the navel, and tin is remembered as standing for the loincloth; a pearl at the crown of the two breasts, and an anointing with saffron."

Verse 56 (garuda.2.40.56)

कर्पूरागुरुधूपैश्च शुभैर्माल्यैः सुगन्धिभिः । परिधानं पट्टसूत्रं हृदये रुक्मकं न्यसेत्

karpūrāgurudhūpaiśca śubhairmālyaiḥ sugandhibhiḥ paridhānaṁ paṭṭasūtraṁ hṛdaye rukmakaṁ nyaset

"With incense of camphor and aloeswood, with auspicious fragrant garlands; a woven cord for the garment, and a golden ornament placed at the heart."

Verse 57 (garuda.2.40.57)

ऋद्धिवृद्धी भुजौ द्वौ च चक्षुषोश्च कपर्दकौ । सिन्दूरं नेत्रकोणे च ताम्बूलाद्युपहारकैः

ṛddhivṛddhī bhujau dvau ca cakṣuṣośca kapardakau sindūraṁ netrakoṇe ca tāmbūlādyupahārakaiḥ

"'Riddhi' and 'Vriddhi' at the two arms, and cowrie shells for the two eyes; vermilion at the corners of the eyes, and offerings beginning with betel."

Verse 58 (garuda.2.40.58)

सर्वौषधियुतं प्रेतं कृत्वा पूजा यथोदिता । साग्निके (कैश्चा) चापि विधिना यज्ञपात्रं न्यसेत्क्रमात्

sarvauṣadhiyutaṁ pretaṁ kṛtvā pūjā yathoditā sāgnike (kaiścā) cāpi vidhinā yajñapātraṁ nyasetkramāt

"Having made the preta thus, furnished with every herb, and worshipped it as described, together with the fire-keepers as well, the sacrificial vessels should be placed in due order, according to rule."

Verse 59 (garuda.2.40.59)

शिरोमे श्रीरिति ऋचा पुनन्तु वरुणेति च । प्रेतस्य पावनं कृत्वा शालिशालशिलोदकैः

śirome śrīriti ṛcā punantu varuṇeti ca pretasya pāvanaṁ kṛtvā śāliśālaśilodakaiḥ

"With the verses 'Shiro me shrih' and 'Punantu varunah', having purified the preta with rice-and-barley water,"

Verse 60 (garuda.2.40.60)

विष्णुमुद्दिश्य दातव्या सुशीलागौः पयस्विनी

viṣṇumuddiśya dātavyā suśīlāgauḥ payasvinī

"a good-natured, milk-giving cow should be given, dedicated to Vishnu."

Verse 61 (garuda.2.40.61)

(तिला लोहं हिरण्यं च कार्पासं लवणं तथा । सप्तधान्यं क्षितिर्गाव एकैकं पानं समृतम्

(tilā lohaṁ hiraṇyaṁ ca kārpāsaṁ lavaṇaṁ tathā saptadhānyaṁ kṣitirgāva ekaikaṁ pānaṁ samṛtam

"(Sesame, iron, gold, cotton, salt, the seven grains, land, and cows — each one is held to be purifying.)"

Verse 62 (garuda.2.40.62)

तिलपात्रं ततो दत्त्वा पददानं तथैव च महादानानि देयानि तिलपात्रं तथेति च । ततो वैतरणी देया सर्वाभरणभूषिता

tilapātraṁ tato dattvā padadānaṁ tathaiva ca mahādānāni deyāni tilapātraṁ tatheti ca tato vaitaraṇī deyā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā

"Then, having given the vessel of sesame, and likewise the gift of footwear, the great gifts should be given, along with the sesame-vessel; then the Vaitarani gift, adorned with every ornament, should be given."

Verse 63 (garuda.2.40.63)

कर्तव्यं वैष्णवं श्राद्धं प्रेतमुक्त्यर्थ मात्मवान् । प्रेतंमोक्षं ततः कुर्याद्धृदि विष्णुं प्रकल्प्य च

kartavyaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ śrāddhaṁ pretamuktyartha mātmavān pretaṁmokṣaṁ tataḥ kuryāddhṛdi viṣṇuṁ prakalpya ca

"For the preta's liberation, the self-controlled man should perform the Vaishnava shraddha; then, having established Vishnu in the heart, the liberation of the preta should be accomplished."

Verse 64 (garuda.2.40.64)

ओं विष्णुरिति संस्मृत्य प्रेतं तन्मृत्युमेव च । अग्निदाहं ततः कुर्यात्सूतकन्तु दिनत्रयम्

oṁ viṣṇuriti saṁsmṛtya pretaṁ tanmṛtyumeva ca agnidāhaṁ tataḥ kuryātsūtakantu dinatrayam

"Having remembered, with 'Om Vishnu', both the preta and his death, the cremation by fire should then be performed; the sutaka lasts for three days."

Verse 65 (garuda.2.40.65)

दशाहकर्त्रा पिण्डाश्च कर्तव्याः प्रेतभुक्तये । सर्वं वर्षविधिं कुर्यादेवं प्रेतश्च मुक्तिभाक्

daśāhakartrā piṇḍāśca kartavyāḥ pretabhuktaye sarvaṁ varṣavidhiṁ kuryādevaṁ pretaśca muktibhāk

"The one performing the ten-day rite should give pindas for the preta's satisfaction; the entire year's procedure should be carried out in this same way, and thus the preta comes to share in liberation."
