The Rules of Purification

Verse 1 (garuda.2.43.1)

श्रीविष्णुरुवाच । जलाग्निबन्धनभ्रष्टा प्रव्रज्यानाशकच्युताः । ऐन्दवाभ्यां विशुध्यन्ति दत्त्वा धेनुं तथा वृषम्

śrīviṣṇuruvāca jalāgnibandhanabhraṣṭā pravrajyānāśakacyutāḥ aindavābhyāṁ viśudhyanti dattvā dhenuṁ tathā vṛṣam

Shri Vishnu said: "Those who have failed at water, fire, or bondage-ordeals, and those who have fallen from renunciation or from fasting, are purified through the two Chandrayana fasts, having also given a cow and a bull."

Verse 2 (garuda.2.43.2)

ऊनद्वादशवर्षस्य चतुर्वर्षाधिकस्य च । प्रायश्चित्तं चरेन्माता पिता वान्योऽपि बान्धवः

ūnadvādaśavarṣasya caturvarṣādhikasya ca prāyaścittaṁ carenmātā pitā vānyo'pi bāndhavaḥ

"For a child less than twelve years but more than four years of age, the mother, the father, or some other kinsman should perform the expiation."

Verse 3 (garuda.2.43.3)

अतो बालनरस्यापि नापराधो न पातकम् । राजदण्डो न तस्यास्ति प्रायश्चित्तं न विद्यते

ato bālanarasyāpi nāparādho na pātakam rājadaṇḍo na tasyāsti prāyaścittaṁ na vidyate

"Therefore a young child commits neither offense nor sin; for him there is no royal punishment, and no expiation is prescribed."

Verse 4 (garuda.2.43.4)

रक्तस्य दर्शने दष्टे आतुरा स्त्री भवेद्यदि । चतुर्थेऽह्नि पदादींश्च त्यक्त्वा स्नात्वा विशुध्यति

raktasya darśane daṣṭe āturā strī bhavedyadi caturthe'hni padādīṁśca tyaktvā snātvā viśudhyati

"If a woman becomes distressed at the sight of blood, or is afflicted by a bite, then on the fourth day, having set aside footwear and the like, and having bathed, she becomes pure."

Verse 5 (garuda.2.43.5)

आतुरे स्नान उत्पन्ने दशकृत्वो ह्यनातुरः । स्नात्वास्नात्वास्पृशेदेनं ततः शुध्येत्स आतुरः

āture snāna utpanne daśakṛtvo hyanāturaḥ snātvāsnātvāspṛśedenaṁ tataḥ śudhyetsa āturaḥ

"When a bath becomes necessary for the sick, a healthy person should touch him ten times, bathing again after each touch; the sick person then becomes purified."
